13 Essential Korean Restaurants in the Twin Cities

"For the Korean BBQ experience that’s most often portrayed on television, Hoban on Hennepin Avenue in Uptown is the place to go. Bring a group to take full advantage of the barbecue menu, which is fairly condensed but contains all the classics: pork loin marinated in a bright housemade pepper paste; thin slivers of calamari dredged in sesame seeds and gochujang; thick chunks of beef short rib marinated in rice wine and soy sauce; bright stalks of asparagus and meaty mushroom caps for a brief reprieve from the meat — all ready for self-service cooking on small gas grills built into each tabletop." - Julie Zhou

1st and foremost the value is seriously lacking at this establishment. A meal for 2 with 2 bottles of Soju was $160 before a tip. Each meat item was barely enough for a single person, so make sure you order two of the $30/Pc. Items. We did brisket and marinated short ribs and had to double the order of each to have a proper portion. Note that neither of the diners are overweight. Just looking for a good meal after a long day. The sides, two pieces of broccoli being one of them, will cost extra To refill. So don't eat your two florets too quickly. The sauces were mediocre and portions also lacking. The kimchi was good, so that was neat . Secondly, the overall establishment could use a refresh and cleaning. For a premium dollar experience I hope for a premium environment. The seats were worn and torn and the walls had literal grease running down from the ceiling, as well as splattered all over the adjacent wall of the booth we sat at. We dined at this facility 3 years prior and it was a good experience. But it seems, like many of the other reviewers, something has changed recently and the quality/value just isn't there anymore. Overall the service was courteous and attentive but the price to portion had us wishing we drove a little further to the all you can eat place for $40/person with significantly more variety in options.

We visited Hobun on 6/14 at 7 PM and were served by the only male server on staff that evening. From the start, his demeanor seemed off and he was high. We waited approximately 40 minutes without receiving our food. Eventually, the server returned to confirm our order and casually mentioned that he had forgotten to enter it into the system. He left quickly after delivering this news. Given the long wait and lack of accountability, we decided to leave. We informed the front desk, and my husband also let the server know the situation was unacceptable. The server then followed us outside to argue about how long we had waited. Additionally, we noticed he was chewing gum while working, which struck us as unprofessional in a restaurant setting.

It was alright. The food did not taste that good. It wasn't seasoned well, there was barely any flavor in it. They didn't have any sauces available. The service was not good, and they misled us into buying more meat by saying that the quantity was less, so we ended up ordering too much because of that. The chicken came out at the end, when we were almost done eating. Only the jumbo shrimp was good. I didn't really enjoy anything else as it was bland. Not worth paying 100$ for it. And soju was overpriced on the menu. The place looks fancy, but it wasn't that clean. Every surface you touch is sticky! The seats and the table were just sticky. I guess the music was good.

Fantastic! I ate the sauces off my plate. Really great service too! Highly recommend

Google
this was SO GOOD! my friends and i came here last night around 9pm. they got us a table quickly (we were walk-ins) and our order was taken fast. the service was amazing, shout out to logan! he made our experience here 10x better. the food was top tier and everything about hoban was just fun. i definitely recommend this place!

Google
The food was really good and waiters were very polite and welcoming. But as we entered the establishment we were welcomed with an unpleasant smell that was noticed right away came from the floors, they were sticky, and you can see shoe prints. Floors need to be deep cleaned.

Google
I usually dine in for their barbecue about every other month, which is great. Their customer service is a hit or miss. Sometimes you come in and other people get seated before you or they don’t give you water, utensils etcThe food is mostly great as well but the last time I did takeout and they gave me yum yum drums instead of the regular wings I ordered for. I do not like this chicken at all, took a bite and they were very off tasting and so black inside. I was quite disappointed because they closed after I received my order. Overall not too bad if you can do dine in on a less busy day so you can at least request for some changes while in there and not be stuck at home with food you don’t want

Google
Long wait despite having reservations. The food was great, but my only complaint is that they don't warn you when they're out of sauces for tempura or mandu. Those are items only enjoyable with dipping sauce and I wouldn't have ordered them had I known they were out of sauce. Tempura eaten dry is especially terrible. The japchae is the absolute bomb, so delicious.

Yelp
We actually really liked our dinner at Hoban BBQ. Other than all the construction on Lake/Hennepin streets, which is not their fault (but definitely be aware of it when getting here), our meal was nearly flawless. All of the dishes we tried were great. For appetizers, we had mandu, a scallion pancake, tteokbokki, and tempura veggies. All of the portions were HUGE, and everything tasted great (especially the pancake, it's a MUST ORDER dish!). We also got spicy pork and beef bulgogi to BBQ. Both of those portions were also huge, and tasted amazing. Everything about the grill worked well, and the ventilation was great (we didn't smell like BBQ at all after). They have one type of Korean beer on tap (which is basically all you can get in Minnesota). The service was pretty quick and friendly. The restaurant was very clean (they spent a lot of time cleaning each place setting after guests left their tables), and the bathrooms were good too. Do keep in mind, many of the streets around here are torn up for construction over the summer, so allow lots of extra time, and plan to park in one of the two nearby garages as there is almost no street parking.

Yelp
This was my first time at a Korean BBQ place and I am not sure I would go back. We got beef and chicken with various sides. While cooking was kind of fun, I am not sure the hassle and the price were worth the food. Maybe we didn't try the right things on the menu but I wouldn't be jumping to go back again. Service was good and they were helpful giving us an idea of what to order but maybe Korean BBQ is just not for me.

Yelp
As someone who travels through Korea often, Hoban is the spot in the Twin Cities! My favorite was the Hoban Galbi. It is very authentic K-BBQ where you will be grilling yourself. Keep in mind that part of the authenticity comes with a service style more similar to Korea. It is not an in and out restaurant, enjoy the atmosphere and time with the company you are with. I would recommend making reservations ahead of time, sometimes it isn't required but it's better to have one than not. 감사합니디!

Yelp
I love Hoban! Such friendly and welcoming service, and the aroma grabs you as soon as you enter the foyer. Apple Maps mistakenly navigated me towards a Minneapolis location I've never been to as I'm only familiar with the Eagan location. And it was worth the drive to get there! It's been years since we've been here, but it brought back so many memories for my wife and I. We reminisced about what our favs were, so we ordered up! I highly recommend the bulgogi, the bibimbap, spicy wings, and how could I go without mandu?? We almost went with the pork bulgogi because it's spicy but we opted to make a return date night another time! Also, if karaoke is your thing, stop by their Do Re MI Karaoke, the rooms were packed and there was even a group of 7 ladies who were jammin out. Hoban is great for large families or groups or for a special date night. I sat right next to my bride in the booth and we had all the food in front of us, I joked that we should play the game Sushi Go! Visit Hoban, it'll become one of your instant fav's!!

Yelp
Extremely overpriced bbq... The service was nice. The place is pretty big. It was difficult to find parking which sucked. The food itself was just okay. The Haemul Pajeon was really yummy. They do offer other dishes if you don't want to do BBQ. The quality of the meat was okay. It was def pricey compared to other bbq places. Probably worth visiting if you are in the area but I would def not go out of way to go here. There are way better Korean bbq places in the burbs.

Yelp
Visiting from out of state. Food prices were extremely high here for a non AYCE spot. Service was really slow, all they did was drop off our food and not really check in on us. Could've used a refill on water's throughout dinner. Food was just okay, felt pretty mediocre to me. We also barely got any dipping sauce, and the server was nowhere to be found, had to track someone down after a while.

Yelp
Went with my cousin Sid and a couple of nephews. The Good. It's kind of fun and the staff were very sweet. The so-so. The food cuts are a bit not my style. The pork was almost all fat and to render on the grill takes forever. I ended up grilling mostly veggies. They were good. Asparagus. Mushrooms. Peppers. All. But proteins were not great.

Yelp
Korean bbq in Minneapolis is not on par with places with large Korean populations like New York, DMV, or Los Angeles. That being said I'm very happy to have Hoban as a reasonable local option. I have been several times with large and small groups of friends, and just to be able to introduce friends who are new Korean bbq to this amazing cuisine alone makes it worthwhile to keep coming back. The food is reasonably good and there are some vegetarian options available too. And of course with a generous selection of refillable banchan (side dishes). The restaurant is spacious and I have not had problems getting a bbq table even with a large walk in group. The prices are higher than what I would spend for an average meal eating out in the Twin Cities and certainly more than what I would spend to have bbq in a more established Korean neighborhood but I think overall still reasonable for the food and experience. Not the best but a solid option for my late night Midwest kbbq cravings. Paid street parking available in neighboring streets.

Yelp
It's pretty tasty! Just a bit pricy for what it is, but it's a good spot I forgot to take pictures of the rest. beef tongue: cook with the oil salt they give you. it tastes so good. bibimbap: really good Chicken skewers: tasty, a little dry bulgogi: soft, sweet, good Overall Good flavors

Yelp
The food was super yummy there wasn't a dish I didn't like and our server was super kind and helpful and I brought a birthday cake and she allowed me to store in the refrigerator so it didn't melt and even offer for us to have the cake there but since we were all full we decided no I highly recommend coming here

Yelp
When the food is great, but the services is not. This place sometimes disappoints me. This isnt the first, second, third or fourth time. This is my fifth time in the pass 3-6 years. We waited more than 45 minutes, next time reserve first. Then we waited 15 minutes to order and then waited 45 mins to get our food. We were starving watching other people eating their food. Technically we were there from 7-10. Just waiting and waiting. Im not too sure if i really wanna come back after this last time. I rather go out of state for any kbbq. The service hasnt always been my favor. However, the food . It was pretty good. The egg soufflé was super salty from top to bottom. The octopus with pork and other veggies was really yummy. I enjoy the hoban galbi, it did taste really good, so always wash your mouth down with water. The flavor sometimes too overpowering. The beef soup was good. I love how it wasnt overpower beef flavor. It can wash down a lot of the other flavor. Btw the lettuce is extra. The ambiance was ok. A lot of weird tv channels. The music was good. A lot of people enjoying their food and having a good time talking.

Yelp
Wanted to share my Uber Eats order experience. The driver was nice and efficient but the restaurant is cheap. For the price I paid for my food, they gave Zero condiments. I ordered 3 dishes totally over $70 and they did not provide any of the condiments they would have served in the restaurant. To me, that's cheap and rude business practice. I will take my business elsewhere from now now. I ordered, kimchi Chigae, katsu chicken and pork bulgogi and they gave Zero condiments.

Yelp
This is my third time at Hoban and it has improved a lot. Last time I visited was 2 years ago and this meal was a five star. The meat was excellent, very well seasoned-- the flavor was on point. The seafood pancake was also delicious with its dipping sauce, it was my first time trying it and would recommend it to anyone! My friends and I enjoyed the KBBQ experience we had, by far the best so far. Hoban has improved through out the years, the quality of the food is better and service is fast. Our server China was great, she was very attentive and sweet. I will definitely come back soon to try their dishes as well.

Yelp
Our server was super friendly! He was always checking on us to see if we needed anything. Unfortunately you need to purchase two order of raw meat in order to grill but they were nice enough to suggest that they cook the meat at the back if we still wanted the bulgogi so we did that instead. I feel like the bulgogi was a little dry but overall still very good! This place is a little pricy but portion of food is a lot so it makes up for it. Sadly there's no free parking lot. It's all street meter parking only.

Yelp
The food was pretty good but the service wasn't too great. We made reservations and wasn't seated for a bit even though we arrived a little early. Then, we were seated but a waiter didn't come around for another 20 minutes. Lots of waiting, plus we needed to pay for parking based on time (street parking right in front) so it felt like we wasted a lot of time. We struggled to flag down our waiter and had to ask for water, but it's understandable because there weren't a lot of waiters. They seemed understaffed so we just had to be patient. The prices were a little high for Korean BBQ in my opinion, but there are no other options (around here) that I know of. The meats were pretty high quality and I'd say worth the price! I really enjoyed the food and had a lot of leftovers. We shared four orders of meats between two people and had a lot of leftovers, so just two orders would probably be enough. I highly recommend the beef tongue and pork jowl. They do charge a small fee for paying with card, but that's also understandable and isn't very big at all. Definitely a place to try for authentic Korean food and I would definitely come back. Our server was so kind and made the experience better.
google avatar

Yelp
Our drumsticks and jeyuk bokkeum were delicious! However our seat was torn up and service was lacking. The soju was a bit overpriced as well. They gave us someone else's order and took forever between our app and our entree to ask for our order.

Yelp
Visiting MSP and tried Korean BBQ at Hoban. Food was good, service was a tad slow- they were busy, and staff were friendly. Prices were average to high for the quality. Note: unfortunately, the BBQ here was not served with lettuce to make wraps. Other KBBQ places serve bbq with lettuce and sam jang, sam mu, and other sides that really compete a kbbq. I probably would check out other Korean bbq in MSP before going here again. Overall it rates a 3.5 star rating.

Yelp
I live really close to here, but for some reason hadn't stopped by yet. Finally came by here last week with a bunch of friends since this is what I believe to be the only KBBQ place in Minneapolis due to what my local friend described as laws around heating elements at the table. I saw the mixed reviews on Yelp, so I was a bit apprehensive, but we came with a big party of 8. We were seated at two adjacent tables. They cannot combine them because the heating elements make the tables permanent fixtures which is no problem! They immediately delivered the banchan, which are basically an assortment of Korean sides including pickled radish, kimchi, etc. The setup was very solid. We ordered a big lychee soju to split and it was delicious! Fed the whole table with multiple shops for only $40 total (5/person). For the main entrees, my side ordered a beef bulgogi for the grill to split. And I also ordered a bulgogi in a bowl. The grill bulgogi was a huge portion, and the marinade was great. It's super easy to cook bulgogi if you've never done KBBQ before, I recommend it as an easy starter. This is because it's very thin and the flavor is strong so it's okay to overcook/easy to not accidentally undercook. Full steaks at KBBQ are just something I don't recommend, you are better off doing that at home. Come here for the marinated Korean specialties! Onto the bulgogi in a bowl, it came in a beautiful, attention grabbing cast iron pot that was steaming ( and (obviously) very hot to the touch. It was jam packed with ground bulgogi, lots of slices of bulgogi, some vegetables, and a healthy helping of vermicelli noodles. The soup was delicious! The bulgogi was tender and flavorful, the broth was awesome, and the noodles were superb. It can get really hot in there with the grill on so just be ready and make sure to hydrate!

Yelp
I ordered a fish plate. I waited about 30+ minutes and the fish came out completely black and burnt. I don't usually complain but I asked for another one. They brought out another one that wasn't burnt, but after cutting it open (or trying to cut it open) it was frozen inside. That explains why the first one was burnt. A restaurant cooking a fish from frozen is just crazy to me. They offered to make me another but after waiting over an hour total, I was already over it. The KBBQ dishes are way overrated and overpriced. This place has the potential to be the one and only real KBBQ places here in MN but instead they're trying to capitalize on these insane dish prices. I'm from San Diego and KBBQ there is all you can eat for $30. Here, a dish of raw beef can go way over $30. Pretty much disappointed with this place.
google avatar

Tara S.

Yelp
Giant portions so don't go without a big group or you'll be stuck eating only two things which is also the minimum for the bbqs to be lit. Flavor just wasn't there for us - little one note with what we got and the bar menu needs major help. Way understaffed too - took 80 min for us to get our food (that we were cooking ourselves on the bbq). Staff was super friendly and apologetic but were running like crazy. Wish they had a tiny portion all you can eat option so we could try more things even if it was higher priced. Fun to try something new but wouldn't go back.

Yelp
I was visiting from Los Angeles. I have been going to Hoban in Eagan for 10 plus years! I found out they opened Korean BBQ Hoban in Uptown!! First, Rudy greeted us with up most care. Catered to our switched reservation time and party number. Such a great service as we walked in! Our server Kien was so friendly and wonderful. I felt like I was dining in top quality Korean BBQ as if I was still in LA. Food was tasty. Drinks were good! Highly recommend it!!

Yelp
Decided to take mom here for her birthday. I think this might be my first time at an actually Korean bbq joint in MN. It was never enticing to go because it was much pricier compared to other places I've been to before like CA and IL. But mom never been so thought we'd both give it a try here. Made reservation before hand and still had to wait 10 mins. It was actually 1/2 full only but I think not enough workers like everywhere else in the world right now. Started off with Shrimp Tempura which also came with some vegetable tempuras so that was a plus. It was crunchy and the batter was good. It came out looking delicious. A little pricey. 4/5 Japchae- also order the glass noodles dish (not pictured). It was a decent size and we also enjoyed the dish 4/5 Soon Dubu chigae beef- we got the beef version tofu soup but let's be honest seafood is the best! It was good for a cold day 4/5 BBQ- we ordered 3 different types of meat. Galbi (most expensive), beef brisket (I think), and pork belly. We enjoyed everything. Besides the Galbi most of the meats are reasonably price. But price and portion doesn't seem to go hand and hand. With tax and tips we paid around $140 for the 4 of us. Given what we ordered it seems right but it's not a typical family dinner. Service was good and fast since it wasn't as busy. Free refills on the side dishes as well. Parents loved the side dishes. We will definitely be back since everyone enjoyed the food. Maybe another celebration.

Yelp
I was excited to see Korean BBQ more prevalent in the twin cities however this place needs some work. Upon entering the music is way too loud, which makes conversation with the staff and your table difficult. It has an atmosphere that is confusing, I wasn't sure if iwas a restaurant or a club at certain points. The staff explained nothing regarding the cooking process or any item food / drinks they brought to our table. It felt as if we had to track someone down and ask for every item needed to eat. The food was tasty overall, but the atmosphere and lack of communication created too many challenges.

Yelp
Worst k bbq experience I've ever had Service was terrible Meat was sub par Very expensive We waited for one hour for our first meat Soju was $20 for a $6 bottle Never will I return to this establishment.

Yelp
First thing first, plz make reservation because this place is super busy. Their kimchi pancake is my all time favorite. The best thing about their bbq is that u will never feel heavy after eating which kind of gives you a hint that everything is healthy.

Yelp
We left Hoban Korean BBQ shocked at how disappointing our experience was. When our New Year's Eve plans fell through we were on the lookout for a cool spot to eat in Uptown. After calling a few places, we were excited that Hoban had a cancellation and could squeeze us in. I'm a K/J BBQ super fan so I had high hopes. Unfortunately, outside of prompt seating and good steak there wasn't much that felt "super" about it. Immediately after being seated and looking at the menu I was concerned. The prices seemed outrageous compared to similar restaurants. We decided to bite the bullet and ended up ordering mandu, chadol baegi, and chicken fried rice. Our server was sweet and was able to help us determine portion size. We added on a steak when we were informed of the two BBQ item minimum. I thought that was strange, but decided to roll with it. We snacked on some side dishes until our food arrived. I think I liked the side dishes more than anything else! Our chadol baegi came frozen and we were unable to cook it until the very end of our dining experience. The mandu was okay but definitely could've been better. The chicken fried rice was a big let down and the beer we ordered came in a can. I'm glad we were forced to order the steak because it was the only thing we both really enjoyed. We were pretty frustrated when we realized we could name several restaurants that are much better for a fraction of the price. Considering the food, atmosphere and pace of service I don't feel as though our experience was worth anywhere near what we paid for it. Maybe my BBQ expectations are high but I believe Hoban Korean BBQ could improve in almost every category.

Yelp
Been here multiple times in the past and the experience was always weird or lacking, but tonight was the last straw. My family of 8 decided to eat here to send my relatives off and we were so offended by the experience that I was compelled to write my first review. I get times are hard but it's clear to anyone that frequents this place that Hoban has been cutting corners to save a buck. (e.g. No more lettuce wraps unless you ask and less banchan) I see too many reviews stating that the food was good but service was bad but our food was disgusting too. Our tteokbokki was not prepared properly, the center was chalky and the sauce was too thick like a tomato paste. The Japchae was all onions and cabbage, hardly any noodles. The Tongue was also cut smaller and more inconsistent. There were chunks thrown in that had to cook longer and if you know anything about tongue is that it becomes chewy and practically inedible when overcooked. Food 2/5 Service was no better. To preface, we were seated around 7:30 and the restaurant was dead. Our table was larger but we are always patient and understanding. First of all we ordered two times and each time something failed to come out, which is fine, but our server was no where to be found the entire time so we were unable to even ask for an update or in this case, remind her. We got our meats first and our appetizers came so late we were basically done with our meal. When we asked her to cancel our calamari she said she didn't even ring it in because she forgot and just brushed us off afterwards. Hope our tip will afford her a notepad since she has a bad memory. I don't name drop people but if you get the server with the bleached ends then you should walk out because she is awkward and bad at her job. We had to verbally flag her down each time which to my family is very embarrassing but when she would happen to walk by she would refuse to check up on us or even glance in our direction which made it impossible! When we could find her on the floor she was goofing off with her coworkers. The only one who helped us was the food runner. She was very kind and helpful. We went in expecting automatic gratuity and my family always tips on top but this time I can confidently say they didn't deserve any. $50 tip for THAT is criminal. I've been a server for years so I always let things slide but this place is so consistently unattentive it's maddening. I can empathise with other servers if they're having a bad day but this was plain indifference and laziness. If they weren't the only kbbq in the twin cities it would be a ghost town. You'd have better luck with the McDonalds around the corner. Never coming back here and I recommend you don't either. Only going to Gyu Kaku from now on.

Yelp
I went to Hoban with someone visiting from out of town. The two others I was with enjoyed their food but for gluten free it was not the best. Their plain meats are gluten free and a few of their sides. When I called they said they had gluten free soy sauce and most of their menu could be made gluten free but when I went in that was not the truth. They did not have gluten free soy sauce and a lot of their meats that had soy sauce were in marinades so couldn't be made gluten free. Korean BBQ is also not cheap so for me it was not worth it .

Yelp
Visited Hoban on a Friday evening around 5pm. They do allow reservations but we walked right in and were seated. Due to COVID, all staff were wearing masks and they took our temperatures at the door before we were allowed to sit. The time we visited, it was us and one other group. The place is pretty large so we were nowhere near anyone else. Anyway, once we were seated we were given the menus. It took us a little bit to decide but once we selected our meats, they were brought out quickly. You get a bunch of sides too including mashed potatoes which is such a fun little touch. I ordered the Bulgogi which is beef strips with a garlic marinade and my brother ordered the beef tongue. PLEASE do yourself a favor and order the Bulgogi. I have never tasted anything so amazing. The marinade is amazing. Personally, I didn't like the beef tongue as it was a little too tough for me but it was still good. The prices are good, my giant pile of beef was about $20 which could easily feed two. The staff are great and would bend over backwards to answer our questions and help us. Can't wait to go back.

Yelp
My first KBBQ was here and it was a pretty mediocre experience. Very pricey, you don't get your bang for your bucks! (Total was $85 for everything - not including tip) This is a long review mainly meant for new comers! My bf and I put in a reservation 45 minutes before heading there and they took it down. We showed up 10 minutes late and had to wait about 10 minutes. No complaint there since it was our own fault for showing up late. (But keep in mind we saw there were lots of open seatings) Parking was challenging to find since they have no dedicated parking lot. Few metered street parking around, you're gonna have to hunt it down. Paid $4 for 2 hour parking a few blocks down from the restaurant -- not bad. The inside had nice ambient lighting and music blasting but as you enjoy your food, you'll forget about it. You will be greeted with delicious smell the moment you get inside. Each table has a ventilator above the grill. First thing we noticed was that the chairs were worn down and torn on the sides, but it was still sit-able. (I'm surprised they aren't investing in better furniture given how pricey the food are!) The booth seating was dirty with bits of debris from previous guests; it seems they don't clean the seating. We were given a tin can with ice cold water and 2 tin cups. The utensils were visibly dirty, we had to wipe it clean with our napkin. No complaint with our waiter, he was attentive and kind but was not knowledgeable. Due to COVID, they were not using menu. They had QR code to scan with your phone for the menus. Swipe left and right to see options! Here's the food menu link with price: https://www.canva.com/design/DAEOi3jJgfc/jtTTAV3AWVI-jutZ8CUlhQ/view?utm_content=DAEOi3jJgfc&utm_campaign=designshare&utm_medium=link&utm_source=viewer Here's the beverage link with price: https://www.canva.com/design/DAEPHhLbbCM/4aNzbJdLWrrbf82rsbVtzA/view?utm_content=DAEPHhLbbCM&utm_campaign=designshare&utm_medium=link&utm_source=viewer We ordered 4 items: fried spicy chicken wings for appetizer, beef bulgogi, pork belly, and marinated short ribs. It comes with free sides and cabbage to share. Our favorite sides were the mashed potato and pickled daikon with jalapeño. We only got 1 type of sauce, not sure if there were supposed to be more! They refill the sides for free so eat it up. (Steamed white rice is an extra $2.50 but we didn't bother.) Our favorite meats were the beef bulgogi, marinated short ribs AND the fried spicy chicken wings. Highly recommend all 3, don't go here without trying them! We didn't take picture of the fried spicy chicken wings because we smashed it up ASAP! The 4 slice of pork belly was dry and flavorless, next time I should bring my own salt and pepper (LOL) but will have to pass. The marinated short ribs was pricey... 3 slice for $28! It was a delicious marinade (and you should try for your first time) but next time I will have to pass. Also, we saw and had to pick out small strands of hair from the mashed potato, pork belly, and marinated short ribs. We should've complained but didn't want to kill the mood so we just picked it and covered it up with napkin. We don't doubt that we ate a few strands of hair throughout though... yikes. And be aware that afterwards, you WILL smell because the oil is splattering all over your clothes and you will be bathing in the smell as it rises to the ventilator. I don't recommend wearing nice high-end attire here OR coming here before going out to mingle with others because you will have acquired BBQ perfume on. Overall experience - 3/5 - Customer service: 4/5 - Food: 3.5/5 (small portions for high price!) - Cleanliness: 1/5 I would consider coming back... but if they decide to do AYCE, then put me down!

Yelp
I wish I could give this place a better review. But honestly it was kind of expensive and the service was weird. The waiter clearly wanted to associate more with the men at the table which was uncomfortable. My friends spent $200 on meats etc., but ended up sick a day later. Maybe that is their fault, I don't know. I chose not to eat much because you can't get all you can eat sushi unless EVERYONE gets AYCE sushi at the table. So because 2/3 of us wanted it and 1 didn't, no AYCE sushi. Regardless of if they other party spent $200 on BBQ. I guess they are just that concerned. Must be serious. They could have gotten my money and my friends money, but they're too paranoid someone's gonna snitch a roll. It was a party of 3. I think you could have just kept an eye on us. And again, the 3rd friend hates sushi and bought $200 of BBQ. Whatever. Edit: most of the reviews I noticed are rated higher because the food is decent but they also note that the service is poor. Just an observation read for yourself.

Yelp
My first experience with Korean BBQ and it did not disappoint! Such a fun experience and tasted amazing! Service was awesome and the place filled up fast! We got there right when they opened at 4 pm on a Saturday. It was fun to see others grilling, laughing and having a great experience as well. Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Kien was amazing and very helpful. He explained the whole menu and highlighted his favorites. The food was very good. Don't come super hungry if you plan on doing full Korean BBQ because it takes time to cook!! Awesome, 10/10 recommend.

Yelp
I came to Hoban on a Sunday evening with a couple of first timers and we had a great time! The first timers absolutely fell in love, of course. For the table we ordered: $36 Apple (I think) Soju which served about 16 - 20 shots Bulgogi Pork Belly Brisket Short Ribs Our table was split, two of us enjoyed the short ribs the most. The other two liked the bulgogi the best. Second to the short ribs, I also really liked the bulgogi. But in general, I would say these are my meat preferences when it comes to Korean BBQ. The service was good. They were decently quick with the orders and made it a point to check in on us. Something to note - they don't do anything special for birthdays!

Yelp
Kien was a great server and made awesome recommendations for us since it was our first time here. He was very friendly and made sure we had a great time during dinner with our friends! We will definitely be coming back in the future!!

Yelp
I'm going to call this review 3 stars with room for improvement. This was an odd one because we actually really liked the food we ate, but we had several other things mostly related to cleanliness and service that were bad. They were in fact so bad that it's only on the strength of the food that I am willing to give this place another shot. But I am. It was that good. So the good: We ate the hot bibimbap, which is exactly what you want - rice, meat, veg and an egg all served in a piping hot stone bowl with your own happy squirt bottle of sauce. We also ordered tofu soup, which I found to be really good - very flavorful with huge chunks of tofu in it. The spice level was I would say medium and it was very flavorful and right on point. And we got the scallion pancake, which was nom nom good... right texture on the outside (nice and crispy and browned but not burnt) and the inside (cooked through but still moist and crack-like in the middle). Very good. The sides offered were unique and plentiful. I was not so sure about the scoop of mashed potatoes with random veggies in it though. We did not do the barbecue your own meat on the middle of your table thing, though this restaurant does offer that as well. The bad: Everything was dirty. The booth they sat us in was dirty (there was stuff spattered all over the benches of the seats). The spoon I got was dirty. Our water glasses had not been cleaned well and had this dirty oily substance all over them so that when you poured water in, it looked like an oil slick on the top. And my husband's napkin had visible chunks of white stuff on it because it was not clean either. Sigh. I almost walked out right then. And our server was nice enough but offered spotty service. Very long time to get our drinks, no refills ever, would disappear for large chunks of time, etc. So food = great 4 stars at least. Service = 2 stars. Cleanliness = 1 star. So 3 stars net with an update to come after our next visit.

Yelp
First time to the uptown location and experiencing the cook yourself BBQ. We came here to celebrate my cousin's birthday. The place is wide open and when we arrived in Saturday night there was only a few tables filled and as the evening went on, more people showed up. I like that they have the option to cook your own or order from a comes menu. We did some cook yourself and some prepared food. We had the beef pot stickers and it was good. A little crispy and I was surprised that the dipping sauce was sweet. Each meat was marinated very well and the slice pork was supposed to be spicy but I didn't think it was at all. I love the kimchi flavor radishes and cabbage kimchi. The spare ribs had a little too much fat for my liking. The suju was awesome! We had ordered a mango and pomegranate! The pomegranate suju was delish and refreshing that you don't taste the alcohol which can be dangerous. The tall mushrooms were so good with a little of the salt sauce spread on it. Service was attentive and we were stuffed! They brought out green tea ice cream for my cousin to celebrate her birthday so that was nice. Would like the to com me back at this is try some other dishes.

Yelp
Our server Yamada was amazing. The food was spectacular, and the company was unsurpassed. Splendid evening.

Yelp
*got there at 8:30 for our 8:30 RESERVATION *waited 45 minutes to get seated *waited 15 minutes for our waitress to come to our table *waited almost an hour for our food *food was definitely not worth the 2 hour wait. i don't understand why it took so long to seat us, there is no point in having reservations when there isn't even a table reserved for us at the time. i also don't really understand why it took nearly an hour for our food to get to our table, which was some rice and the rest was meat we had to cook ourselves. i do not recommend this restaurant unless you are willing to wait 2 hours to eat.

Yelp
Our dining experience was pretty mediocre at best. A few buddies and I came in around 7:30 on a Saturday and put our name in for a table. The place wasn't too busy, but it took almost an hour to get a table. While the staff were very nice, the service was pretty slow. The restaurant had a good food selection, but it didn't live up to the hype, especially for the price. We ordered some dumplings, a few bulgogi, short ribs and sides of rice (at a surcharge). The food had some great flavor, but the portions were small. For 3 of us, the total bill (including 2 beers a person) was about $200 and we left feeling like we could have easily eaten a few more plates. Maybe I got too used to KBBQ in Koreatown when living in Los Angeles, but I've had all you can eat KBBQ for the same quality and half the price.

Yelp
I ordered take out (sul-lung-tang, yuk-gae-jang, and bo ssam), and sul-lung-tang was only half filled with noodles inside. So, only half the container was filled with soup. I called, and the person said, it's supposed to be like that, without apologizing. I am Korean, and order Korean food all the time. I know soup is always filled to the top of the container. He said nothing I can do and I can put it on yelp!

Yelp
If I could give this a -Star I would. From The start of walking through the door I should have known. Place was, what visibly appeared to be about only 30% occupied, yet we had to wait 20 mins to be seated. The host was very dry and semi rude. The front bar area was dirty floors, walls, and tore up chairs. Seemed fully staffed yet not sure why the place was filthy and the service being poor as ever! Never been to this place, server had no knowledge of menu or suggestions for first timers.‍ the was even worse, the wall was riddled with grease splatter and other stuck on food and stains... F'n gross!!!!! The food was semi par just because I refused to let over $200 just be blown so hell I ate some bland meats. No suggestions for grill techniques on best cooking... this is NOT the place to try, what is absolutely to be some historically flavored Korean bbq. Stay clear of this place!!!!! You will regret it!!!!!!

Yelp
Very spacious restaurant, tricky parking situation, great and very attentive servers! We came in on a Thursday incredibly hungry and ready to DIY. We ordered a seafood set and it was marinated very well. I wish that the server or menu provided helpful tips on when to know exactly the food was done preparing. But other than that, the octopus was enjoyable! The server was extremely prompt with noticing the grill and replacing as needed. The restaurant was also empty spare 2-3 others. We ordered tempura vegetables as well which were fried so well. Both crispy and airy, and the vegetables were not soggy. They were a nice break from all the meat. We ordered a kimchi pajeon which was very big even to split amongst five, and the dipping sauce was so good! It was very warm to eat, and was served in a cast iron skillet so it maintained a good temperature the whole time. The only complaint I had with it, is that it was just too oily.

Yelp
Service is slow! The front lady with the bandana doesn't know or care to greet guests. It's not like there's a ton of there when we were there. Food is ok but seem to cut corner on the spices, bland but the calamari is still good $42 price of plane steak was a bit steep. I won't go back

Yelp
Came here for a late night team dinner after a long night of drinking. Took a while to get our party of 14 seated but they made it happen. We ordered what felt like a never ending smorgasbord of meats: bulgogi, pork belly, short rib, ribeye and I can't honestly recall the rest. The food was good, same as you'd get at any other Korean BBQ, drinks were super cheap as it was a Wednesday late night HH... $1 shots of Soju. Around 1130PM the place started to pop and people started to pour into the place. Music was "turnt up" literally. Overall, I do recommend this place and would return if I ever come back to Minneapolis. Just beware if you come on a Wednesday, it may get too "lit" for you.
