A True Insider’s Guide to Eating, Drinking, and Staying in Istanbul

"An arty Turkish brasserie housed in a historic Beyoğlu building where chef Çiğdem Seferoğlu serves market-driven cuisine — signature items include a famous chopped salad dressed with a sour cherry sorbet and a majestic octopus with green olives cooked in a wood-burning oven — and where Sunday brunches have become a local legend." - Anya von Bremzen

Hodan was one of the most memorable meals I had in Istanbul. The food was beautifully prepared, refined, balanced, and full of flavor without feeling heavy or overworked. The pomegranate salad was a standout: fresh, vibrant, and perfectly balanced. The atmosphere was calm and welcoming, which made it especially comfortable as a solo diner. Service was warm, professional, and perfectly paced, attentive without hovering. If you’re looking for a restaurant that delivers excellent food in a relaxed, elegant setting, Hodan is absolutely worth a visit. I would return without hesitation.

I can't describe all my emotions. I was pleasantly surprised by the place, the quality of the food and its taste. Let's start with the fact that even before you entered the restaurant, I was overcome by some mysterious feelings. Sitting at the table I felt like I was somewhere in the forest. We were offered a spray, which was very nice and thoughtful on the part of the people. The open kitchen adds even more interest and interaction with the team. Special thanks to the chef. Incredible starters: spotted vegetables with hummus, crispy simit, juicy tomato salad. We also chose the most delicious artichoke - I recommend trying it! Geleta with beef tongue and delicious pickles, and of course we chose tiramisu for dessert. An original interpretation and it's very tasty! Special thanks for the service and atmosphere. Hodan - It's a fresh take on flavor combinations, visual aesthetics and atmosphere.❤️ I would highly recommend this place to visit!!!

Unfortunately, I’m not impressed with the service nor the main dish this time around. Waiters came across quite impatient. We ordered fish main dish and there were only 4 tiny tiny pieces fish, too much yogurt and sauce and a lot of bread on the plate. It can’t be the whole fillet that’s for sure. Starters were amazing again. But in general I’m disappointed and I don’t think I will recommend Hodan to my foreign guests for a while. Sorry!

Nice place and a beautiful interior, but it was very dark, I could barely see what I was eating. Also, everyone around was smoking. The dishes were creative but unmemorable and very greasy. Even high-quality, raw fish is simply drowned in oil, so that its taste is completely lost.

Amazing food and friendly service. We loved the vine-baked bread (not like anything I’ve tasted before), the kiofte, the lamb (juicy and quite frankly the best I’ve ever had) and of course the desert (pistachio ice cream baklava).

I will rate this place with a 5/5 according to my scale. Food quality: 2.6/3 Ambiance of the place: 0.4/0.5 Authenticity/ innovativeness of the place: 0.4/0.5 Value/Price of the place: 0.2/0.5 Service of the place: 0.5/0.5 Total: 4.1/5 This was a delicious food experience in the heart of Istanbul. We had the çıtır enginar (crispy artichoke), levrek pilaki (seabass dish), kuzu sırt (back of lamb), isli balık ezme (cured fish paste), and deniz mahsüllü arpa şehriyesi (orzo with seafood). Everything was delicious, with the highlights being the artichoke and the fish paste. The cocktails were also tasty, and the location and the service is very good. The food is pricey, but it is worth the trip !!

Don’t be fooled by the 4.1 rating.. there’s no way that’s accurate! The food was amazing, the staff was super friendly, and the atmosphere was really nice. Seems like some unfair or jealous reviews brought the score down. Definitely worth a visit. I’ll be coming back for sure!

Photos are from a few months ago, we came in having reserved a table. The menu has changed since then from what I hear but we were pretty happy with our dinner. Borek with lor cheese was to die for and also the mini kofte were delicious.
