The historic atmosphere gives it so much charm and character, like stepping into a beautifully preserved moment in time. The roast duckling was cooked to absolute perfection *chef’s kiss* tender, flavorful, and beautifully presented (mushrooms added to my taste). Paired it with a Rönig Dom Hudson beer, which completely lived up to the hype. Crisp, smooth, and just right for a relaxed, satisfying meal. A special shoutout to our amazing server, Angel - so warm, patient, and truly attentive. He made the whole experience even more enjoyable by actively listening to our requests and making us feel completely taken care of.

b.overly_delicious @hoffmanhousetavern Kingston,NY: So i’m embarrassed to say, I’ve never been to the Hoffman House. Like ever! Some close friends of mine, finally dragged me in to experience the colonial pilgrim vibes of the original stockade. Checked the menu online and couldn’t believe the prices! Everyone in our group had the French onion soup. Below the gooey mozzarella (I believe) lies a deep bowl of black pepper and onion broth. Very good and very much pepper forward. So much so, you little get a chew of peppercorns in your mouth after each bite. I love black pepper so this was fine with me. Rueben and fries ($12), Bacon cheeseburger ($14), and the garlic steak sandwich ($13.5) all served with fries were properly portioned for the price. This must be the best deal in town! Absolute deliciousness! Garlic steak stacked with garlic butter dripping out of the roll and smeared with blue cheese. The standard battered fries were seasoned which I haven’t seen before (my favorite frozen variety). Waitress was extremely pleasant and accommodating. This place is like stepping back in time but not the 60s, 70, or even 50s. We are talking 1800-1700s. Felt like a real pilgrim. Recommended by a kind soul we met while walking in town. We had the steak and pasta. Came with salads and I thought the salad was very fresh. The steak was a little overdone but tender enough for medium rare. The onion and mushroom sauce was delicious. Pasta has a little spice and it was great. Recommended.

Google
Very cool historic house with beautiful creaking wood floors and staircase. Great ambiance, diverse drink and food menus, and excellent service. Each table had unique, modern lighting that doubled as a bluetooth speaker so you can dine to your own music. The French onion soup and roast duck were amazing. Would definitely dine here again. NOTE: Set aside enough time to dine here because we planned for about an hour and a half but we were there for two hours and had to skip dessert orders to get to our next destination. I would have loved to try their desserts, they sounded amazing!

Really cool place. Our servers were great and fun. The bar is cozy and well stocked! I definitely would eat there again!

Just not what it used to be. Today was the last time I’ll ever eat here. This is the third strike. I’ve been enjoying this restaurant my whole life and lunch has always been a solid go to. But this is it. Service is so ridiculously slow for no reason. Today they were still setting up the restaurant when we arrived well after opening. The servers and manager were assembling the lunch menus when we arrived. We were given a seat and menus were thrown down on the table in front of us. No drink order taken, no water, no other greeting for at least five minutes. Manager/owner was looking at phone at the bar while we waited for a greeting of some kind or a glass of water. The staff was passing back and forth, actively ignoring us. Finally our waiter arrived and the order was taken. There were about two or three other tables in the restaurant and the piece of quiche and sandwich we ordered took a long time to come . Drinks came out just as slow as the food and the server put cans on the table for customer to open themselves. The whole experience was just meh. And this being the third time I was actively ignored while the restaurant was not busy at all. You lost a longtime customer.

Slow (though friendly) service. Bacon-wrapped scallops were mediocre.( I would be amazed if they had actually been cooked fresh, vs.frozen). Tap beer was barely cold. Chicken satay was just okay, sauce was too soupy. Nice old house and outdoor seating.

Google
Hoffman House could be a 5 star place simply because of the historical significance of the building, but the food was really good as well! The French onion soup was good. I got the crispy roast duck, which was delicious. My only dings was that only parts of the skin were crispy, and it would be nice to have a vegetable side in addition to the rice/potato side too. My wife got the scallops marsala and that was also delicious, with a good portion of scallops and a tasty marsala sauce! We got the apple cobbler for desert and that too was really good! The staff was friendly and welcoming. Service was a little slow especially given that there wasn't a crowd when we got there for dinner, but we were in no rush. All in all a great meal. Highly Recommended!!

Yelp
Had a lovely dinner here. Great historical building that feels cozy. It would be tough to maneuver if you are handicapped unless you dine outside due to stairs and narrow passageways. Food is well-prepared and good sized portions. Love that they have a duck special every day, but I wish that fewer dishes were prepared with jalapeño or spicy ingredients. Service was friendly. Would return.

Yelp
Was seriously wowed by dinner here! It's been recommended for a long time and this winter we finally made it in. Quaint and warm and perfect for colder weather as we were seated right by the fire place. Hearty, delicious food and attentive service. French leaning menu with something for everyone. Everything we ordered was delicious and for the quality of seafood/meat and the portion size the prices were more than reasonable. Lovedddd the French onion soup and the calamari buffalo style. My partner loved the seafood pasta which was well seasoned and deliciously decadent without being too heavy or creamy. The scallop Marsala served over mashed potatoes was cooked to perfection. I didn't get a chance to try but garlic steak also had rave reviews . Hoffman house definitely earned these five stars! Great option in Kingston.

Yelp
This place is off-the-chart wonderful! Last night was the first time we tried it - we've passed it a zillion times, this time we said 'let's do it.' Super friendly in an historic setting, great staff, amazingly reasonable prices, the duck was exceptional (they change the sauce nightly, I was not vibing on choice they were offering and they graciously changed it for me - it was superb); my wife had the steak - perfect. The French onion soup was excellent, salad dressings - everything about this place had us smiling - nothing stuffy about this place, everyone dining at the tables around us and at the bar was having a great time. The Hoffman House is now on regular rotation!!!!!

Yelp
Very good food ! I got the duck and mashed potatoes, and it was a bigger portion than I thought ! They also give out bread in the beginning. The atmosphere is very weird tho...it reminds me of being in someone's grandparents home, except without the familiar feeling lol. Maybe it was just where we were seated.

Yelp
Food is to die for, service is top notch, the atmosphere and ambiance was calming and inviting. Would highly recommend this amazing place to anyone looking for an excellent dinner.

Yelp
A local favorite of mine, consistently knocks the ball out of the park. Excellent steak and chimichurri sauce. The service is always polite and consistent. The ambiance is great indoor and outdoor. A must have is their crème brûlée !

Yelp
We came here on a Tuesday around 5:15pm. This place has a really great ambiance. Old building with several different rooms. In order to find the entrance you need to walk into the "courtyard" from the street and walk around back to the entrance. You enter the bar and we were greeted there. We got a table immediately. Our server was friendly and helpful. We ordered drinks: lychee spritz (needed a little more lychee), blood and bourbon (strong bourbon) and the whiskey punch (sweet and orangie). Food: coconut shrimp appetizer, and two garlic steak sandwiches. On the appetizer (only three shrimp..they were larger ones but a little disappointing-flavor was good and cooked nice and crunchy-peach dipping sauce was good too), steak sandwiches-(nice soft fresh ciabatta roll with lots of steak and onions and added mushrooms with cheese-tasty) Looking around at other tables (one got their appetizer well before we got our food) it took what seemed to be a long time to get our order. When we received our food it was freshly made and hot. Our server checked on us once after we got our food. (Did we get lost in the crowd of regulars??!!??)

Yelp
Had the bacon cheeseburger for takeout. Looked like a quaint little eatery. Will try eating there next time. For my money, the best burger in town.

Yelp
I waffled between two and three stars. The menu here was not my jam, so I'm trying yo be fair as the people that I was with who were steak and potatoes types seemed to like it. But I thought about it and nope. We had a large group dinner that would up in a small room up a stair case. The server was clearly overwhelmed from the get go. It took a very long time for some of us to order drinks and even longer to get them served. The wines by the glass were pretty mediocre. One of the appetizers never showed up even though we asked about it. After a very long time salads showed up. And then even longer for dinners. The fries with the veggie burger were cold and not very good. But the kicker was the bill. Now even been to restaurants who wouldn't do separate checks without issue, although in the day and age of computers I think it's kinda dumb. But they wouldn't take the cards and charge a certain amount either. We each independently had to go up to the register, tell her the amount of what we ordered without the tip and then fill in the tip after. Two of the older parties in our group didn't get this part, and told the woman what to charge with the tip, not writing it in separate. The server tallying the bill told us then the server wouldn't get that part of the tip? Soooo the restaurant would just keep the additional money paid? It was an extremely lengthy process, even without the drama about the tip. I think it would have been less stressful and less time consuming for the server as well to just do the separate checks or even do the charges the old fashioned way because this process was the dumbest ever. The entire dinner took over three hours. I probably wouldn't go back just because of the unappetizing menu even in a small party. But forget bringing another large group of business associates here!

Yelp
Went to Hoffman house twice on my short visit back to Kingston. Owner and son were so gracious and accommodating to our large group. Food and drinks were excellent and service was prompt and friendly. Highly recommend for lunch or dinner and drinks.

Yelp
Sauhl was our waiter. He was a super nice fella. The menu is pretty straightforward and basic but it had all the "New England classics". Glad we stopped and appreciated the history of the cozy building. Decent food. Ceasar salad was good and the sweet potato fries were yummy. Tuscan Wrap was a little "juicy" but ok. Meh... it's a wrap ... my expectations were set low but overall fun time in Kingston

Sharon C.

Yelp
Again a wonderful dining experience at an historic restaurant in Kingston! Our party of 6 ...dining outside...the service, the food, ambience...excellent! Thank you!

Yelp
What a great place to eat. The food is really good and priced well. The menu has everything, and the specials are great. The building is an old stone house, a very cool place to dine. The staff is friendly and attentive. Great for a business lunch or family gathering.

Yelp
Best steak sandwich. Loved it, and the ambiance was inside. I highly recommend Hoffman House for lunch or dinner.

Yelp
I really wanted a steak whilst staying in Kingston over the weekend and Hoffman House Tavern truly delivered. The interior is cozy and inviting with rustic wood decor. I ordered the NY Strip with Au Poivre sauce $29 with a twice baked potato and a salad. Warm bread with butter was served. The server was very sweet and accommodating. 10/10

Yelp
This building is older than Kant- gorgeous wooden beams and stucco walls- homemade sandwiches with curly fries, wonderful French onion soup, and friendly staff- a perfect place to tuck in from the cold after a long walk in the woods
google avatar

Yelp
Wonderful small town watering hole and restaurant. Fantastic menu with nicely sized portions. Margaritas were magnifico! I had the garlic skirt steak and stephany had the Seafood platter. I had gorganzola crumbles on my salad that comes with the meal, and a nice and crispy baked potato. The steak was so tender and yummy...a very nice portion. The seafood was really tasty, but a bit smaller portion. Lots of other interesting things on the menu! The house was soooo cozy on a cold winter night. We had the table right next to a huge fireplace. Perfect. We WILL be back.

Yelp
Found ourselves in Kingston and decided to check out this establishment. Who wouldn't want to eat at such a historic building. We were seated immediately. We didn't know the restaurant would be closing for a month the next day so some things weren't available but that was fine. We really enjoyed our food. We like to start with a calamari for the table and it was pretty good! I had a cajun chicken quesadilla which was yummy, my son had a burger which was wow! I forgot what my husband and duaghter got :( but they enjoyed it! Everything was great and the staff was awesome. I would love to come again for sure. Kingston was a good time.

Kincade A.

Yelp
Ambience is just wonderful. Food, however, is just meh. Wish food was better as could be a fantastic place.

Yelp
This is a favorite of mine for years so we stopped in with the family on Sunday of Labor Day weekend. I could tell by the staff that ownership had changed. We were seated pretty quickly despite the fact they looked busy. Great bones to this historic building which adds to the appeal. Ordered a couple of beers to start and they had Juice Bomb on tap so that was delicious. I ordered the Scallops Marsala, wife ordered Strip Steak with blue cheese topping and chicken fingers for our son. Food was slow coming out but we understand staffing shortages coupled with a busy dining room contributed to that. We ordered another round of drinks and that took a while as we didn't see the server for a while. When she brought the drinks, I told her that it wasn't Juice Bomb by the color. She said it was but I asked her to check at the bar. She came back and said they ran out so she gave me an Oktoberfest and said it was similar (if you read my reviews, you'll know I'm a bit of a beer guy) so it was not similar. I drank it and I noticed on the bill that we were not charged for that beer so that was nice. Our food came out and my scallops were perfect and by Sant, served on a bed of angel hair pasta. Our sons chicken fingers were nice white meat and cooked just right. My wife's steak was brought out but was missing the blue cheese topping. Not a big deal and we brought it to the waitresses attention. She said she would be right back with it. She came by 5 minutes later and admitted she forgot but she would bring the topping back out. My wife told me to go ahead and eat and not wait for her. I finished my meal and my wife gave up and started eating her steak after 15 minutes. We were ready for the check and the topping was brought out. The steak was now cold and despite being cooked as ordered, it wasn't what she ordered as the topping was the part that appealed to her. I again admit that we are in a staffing shortage nationwide so I am hesitant to give negative reviews on service but I felt asking for the topping as ordered was an easy ask and our server flubbed it twice. We will certainly give them another shot as the food I had was tasty, seasoned well and plentiful. Tips: Off street parking behind the restaurant, they have kids menu offering so ask if you don't see it in the menu.

Yelp
The food is exceptional. The historic atmosphere should be experienced. This place should be on your Hudson Valley bucket list. Yet, I don't want to go back. Because it is a historic home it is cramped and poorly ventilated. I like the fare but never quite feel comfortable in the setting.

Deb V.

Yelp
Food was very good! We all had the Southwest salad for lunch and sat out on the patio. Everything was perfect. The service was friendly and efficient. Thanks for a great time!

Glenn B.

Yelp
The food and the service are great!! I look forward to the times when my schedule puts me in the geographic pull of the Hoffman House. The owners care about the quality of the service and food. Appetizers to soup to salad to main course to dessert always taste great. I have enjoyed each visit.

Yelp
We came here for an early dinner on a Saturday (about 5:30) We were promptly seated and gave our drink orders which came to us quickly. Then we placed our order. The salad for our friend was delivered but our appetizer was forgotten. The waitress did apologize to us for missing it and she canceled the order for us. Then, we waited a long time before our meal was served. The fish and chips (sweet potato fries substituted for the chips) for my daughter and me was...okay...but nothing really special. My wife's veggie burger was...okay. I have to say we were underwhelmed by the food and the service. The food just did not blow me away. And there is virtually nothing here for anyone who is vegetarian. My daughter had the Chocolate Lovin' Spoonful cake, but again, nothing really special. The decor of the building is beautiful with much of the flooring, ceilings and wainscoting dating back more than two centuries. However, I just can't see myself making a return visit here.
google avatar

Mary B.

Yelp
The turkey burger was a 5, grilled leg of lamb was a 3... meal not served hot and not tasty.service was slower than we expected and even the server apologized for slowness, but the turkey burger with roasted peppers and avocado. Side salad was delicious!
google avatar

Yelp
This great good snd service. $35.00 rib eye steak done perfectly medium rare with a chimichanga sauce. 17th century house. One room was set aside for the 10 of us. However there was a nursery school group screaming next to us The staff knew it would be a problem and once a table for ten became available they moved us. We didn't ask , they took the initiative. Sliced steak was also perfectly done Bar cocktails were beautiful. Bread basket was very fresh and delicious. Just a great place.
google avatar

Kyle G.

Yelp
We love the history, menu, and food here. We have been coming here for years and highly recommend.
google avatar

Jean K.

Yelp
I live down the street. The building is wonderful and they have a gas fireplace. You will not have a "fine dining " experience here - so don't expect that. The food is ok. If you get something like fish and chips that is great !! Or a burger. Mostly local older clientele. Good for a old time Kingston experience. Didn't see any younger people here. The bar was busy with people drinking.
google avatar

Carol B.

Yelp
A gem and a treasure of history in Kingston. The food, service, and ambiance provides a very memorable experience for tourists and locals make it a favorite watering hole and relaxing place to eat, year round. The outdoor patio is a perfect 3 seasons and in winter you have wonderful rooms with fireplaces. It takes you back to a time before the Revolution and our Nation was in it's beginning.
google avatar

Carol A.

Yelp
We had a wonderful dinner tonight. I had not been here for many years and it was as good as I remember. The service was excellent and the ambiance is definitely interesting since it is an old historic building.

C F.

Yelp
Went for dinner on a cold night. Was pleased to be seated across from the fireplace. Provided a nice ambience and warmth from the tavern door being constantly open with other patrons arriving. Our server was very friendly and accommodating, however was not timely. Seems he disappeared often and we were visited by a young lad offering water refills. Our requests were made through him to our missing server. The dinners arrived after some time of waiting and were fresh, hot and delicious. We ordered the angel hair pasta for the toddler which was a huge adult portion for about $10. No meat, just a red sauce, I thought was overpriced and oversized for a child's meal. We paired our meals with the beer menu which complimented the food. It was an average experience and we made the best of the visit by enjoying the positives. Would like to visit during lunch in the future.

Lulu L.

Yelp
Horrible service . They text customers violating and insulting their privacy once they get mad.
google avatar

Andrew B.

Yelp
If you are a local you have likely passed the Hoffman House a million times or maybe you are new to the area or simply visiting. Either way it is time to check out this historic building and the dining experience and nostalgic atmosphere it provides. This (recently acquired) family owned business has an extensive menu selection that is certain to offer something for everyone. The service was on point as were the apps, cocktails, entrées and desserts. The atmosphere is warm (literally as they had the biggest active fireplace I have ever seen) and inviting. Step back in time, relax and enjoy some of the finest cocktails & cuisine you will find in the area.

Barbara V.

Yelp
I love the ambiance, the food, and the service! It's my favorite place to go. I highly recommend it!

Yelp
Classic old style restaurant with gray ambience, location and good food. For traditionalists !
google avatar

Kealan H.

Yelp
Perfectly cooked steak & delicious twice baked potato washed down with tasty margaritas. GPG said the veggie burger was decent!
google avatar

Powell M.

Yelp
It was a dark damp night so being seated by the fireplace was super awesome! The spicy shrimp linguine ( it think it was a special) good, steak was cooked to order with an amazing sauce, it think it was the maderia. I had a very filling French onion soup and helped my kid with her salad and pasta. It was rather late and there were not too many people around so I snooped through the rooms of this historic house. There are some lovely private dining rooms. This is a great date nightspot.
google avatar

Eric T.

Yelp
Outstanding! My daughter had Garlic Steak and I had the Duck, we sat by the fireplace at this historic 1679 building. Wow amazing place and exceptional food!
google avatar

Mbachur M.

Yelp
We were a little late for our reservation, but they accommodated us and were so nice! I got the shrimp, which was really great! But I didn't really care for the roasted potatoes.
google avatar

Nancy S.

Yelp
I have always loved the Hoffman House. Their outdoor dining is perfect, and for the cooler months inside dining is warm and friendly. The food is always great and the prices right. The staff is always super friendly. My high school classmates, 7 of us, went yesterday 10/14 and we were seated in the garden area. Our food was wonderful and the dessert was great. Our waitress was amazing and very accommodating even taking our picture. The only negative were the bees buzzing around!!! Thank you for your professionalism. Your always on top of your game

Mattausch M.

Yelp
Excellent cocktails, lunch and dinner selections. Service was prompt and friendly. Great value and ambiance.
google avatar

Kris M.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious food, ambiance is terrific and so are wait staff. Pricey but worth it. Duck--succulent and spices are perfect. Steak, amazingly cooked moist and extremely tasty and drinks---wonderful.

Destiny R.

Yelp
i had the scallops and they were absolutely amazing ! Had dinner outside patio was very beautiful.

Brenda J.

Yelp
The service was good and the food was delicious. We look forward to returning in the future.
google avatar

Alec V.

Yelp
It's a cute location, and feels homey with the fireplace and all. I think that's about all that it has going for it. Service was bad, and the food was barely passable, and yet cost as much as a well cooked meal. Frankly, one of those places I would never consider wasting my time at again

Glenn M.

Yelp
I'm really really glad we tried this place out! It was recommended by work colleagues who live in the area and I am so glad that I didn't miss out. We parked in the back parking lot and upon walking to the back we were greeted by the staff and warmly guided in. Once in even more staff gave us a warm welcome. Everyone was super friendly and had cool facts to share about the history of the building, they even encouraged us to take a look around and snap some pictures. Ok... on to the food. So we were told that the steak sandwiches and philly were the things to get and they were right. We all loved the sandwiches and even more so for me I loved the curly fries... I am a curly fry freak lol. Everything was excellent!!! I will warn you that they use a lot of garlic and your friends might not want to smell your breath after. I highly highly recommend you check this place out!
google avatar

Brian M.

Yelp
We sat on the covered patio which was nice on a warm summer eve. The portions are large but make sure you get the twice baked potato, it's so good. The service was excellent and the food was very good. Next time will want to sit inside on a cold winter night and get the real feel for the history of the place.

J G.

Yelp
Very good food. Everything I have tried on two visits was excellent lunch once and dinner once. The interior is a real restored revolutionary tavern with lots of fireplaces, Giant wooden plank floors all wavy and uneven because it's so old. I like the old tavern but it may not be for everyone. This is one of the few historic buildings in old kingston not burned by the British. Lot of history and some really good food to soak it all in. Service is fine, doesn't stand out as worth mentioning.
