Our Favorite Places of 2019

"Upon entering this classic building, you’re greeted by large halls and rooms filled with magnificent, courtly coats of armor and weaponry from throughout the Middle Ages.   Three major exhibits span the museum and showcase a vast array of armor worn by political and military leaders from across Europe. They include armor worn by the imperial family, a collection of arms dawned by military leaders from Western and Central Europe from the 15th and 16th centuries, and artifacts from the House of Habsburg.  From fancy armor worn by nobles just to show off their wealth to common battle equipment, visitors will find a great selection inside. There is also horse and children’s armor, as well as swords, spears, and early models of modern firearms. For anybody interested in armor or the medieval period in general, a visit is well worth the trip." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Amazing and well put together collection! Only flaw was exhibits are only in German, so bring google translate or headphones. The other exhibits were also really cool, but this was a unique experience for me. I’ve never been to an medieval/renaissance armor museum before. I took way too many pictures

Amazing collection of medieval armor. The building is also fantastic. Never saw anything like that. Old warriors were so much scary and intimidating. Of course, before the age of automatic weapons, the human skills was the essence of the war.

Amazing experience for anyone interested in late medieval and early modern armor and weapons. Includes gorgeously embossed and gilded pieces, along with some really rare and strange items. These include a lantern shield with multiple blades, clockwork splitting tri-point daggers and spetums, gun/melee hybrids, oversized ceremonial swords, a lance gripped hand cannon, hunting swords, folding polearms, and a lot more. As a huge added bonus your ticket also gives you access to the entire rest of the museum, which includes quite a variety of different exhibits.

Really nicely displayed collections of armor. Beautiful building interior to admire as well. Not very many people visiting, even on a weekend.

Ahh, be wary greatness ahead, therefore seek nightfall.

Great museum for armor and weapons on the top floor. The middle floor is alright with brief history from around the world. Bottom floor doesn't have much and is focused around modern times.

I found it hard to get to (Google Maps is not accurate) but if you have any interest in armor and weapons used by nobles this is the place to go. The collection here are typically ornate and for ceremony rather than battle (visit the Army Museum instead). The display is only one floor - easy to see everything in about an hour.

Very nice collection of armour but unfortunately no English translation on the signs so if you don't speak German I wouldn't recommend. The audio guide costs 4 euros by person ( which is already unacceptable) and above that is only of use for one or two piece of collection by room! 😡 the majority of the collection will remain obscur to you if you don't already have a HUGE knowledge of the history of armour..

Yelp
If you are into armor and weapons, this is your museum. Located on an upper floor in the right wing of the Habsburg Palace. The floor space for this is massive. As you stroll down rooms of beautiful architecture and craftsmanship, you was can see centuries of armor of so very different size, material, and design. Even armor for the horses. The weapons rooms contained crossbows, swords, knives and a huge assortment of guns. You'll have to watch as you wander not to miss a couple of rooms that are interior to the walking loop. The splendor of the rooms alone- wow. It's a magnificent palace.

Yelp
We visited a LOT of museums on our Vienna trip, and the Rustkammer stood out as one of my favorites. First, the collection is very comprehensive and well presented - they have everything from early medieval armour to 19th c. ceremonial armour and just about everything in between. We've visited similar collections in NY, Dresden and Munich and I think Vienna's is the best by far. Some things to know: *Limited hours - Weds thru Saturday only. Your ticket includes the Antique Musical Instruments galleries (well worth some time) as well as the Ephesus Museum (worth a walk through). Audioguide is also included in the ticket price. *A little knowledge of Hapsburg history helps the collections come alive, though it's hard to keep all the players straight. I really liked the touch of showing someone's armour next to a portrait of them wearing said armour. *They've got some incredibly rare and interesting stuff - including "costume" armour and multi purpose weapons (a knife/lantern/shield combo). They also have the only original known linen protector for horses during the joust (there's a name for it, can't recall). *At some other museums (Hofburg for example), I didn't get much of a sense of pre-Maria Theresa Hapsburg history but the Rustkammer had some nice examples of items owned and used by earlier dynasty members. Another nice bonus is that the galleries were completely uncrowded when we visited. This collection is top notch and absolutely worth a visit.

Yelp
A fun building with beautiful architecture and some great sculptures right behind the apartments, no one goes here so it's quite empty!
