Yelp
One of three locations in SoCal (Long Beach, Seal Beach, Torrance), Hof's Hut of Long Beach serves up a huge menu of American diner classics, most of which is available all-day. There is a large shared parking lot with plenty of spots in the back, and both indoor and outdoor seating available. Prices were decent, and portion sizes were OK.
We came for breakfast on a Tuesday, and because we came through the front (opposite the parking lot), we bypassed the front reception. But unlike other places where we would then have to walk all the way across the restaurant, instead, a waitress (Liz), directed us to an open table close to where we came in. She then became our waitress and was the one taking care of us throughout the meal.
As mentioned, the menu is very large, and includes alcohol (wine and beer). Except for a few exceptions, all of it is available to order anytime. Wife got coffee ($3.49) and free refills were easy since a small thermal carafe was provided tableside. It took us a bit of time to make our choices...for Halloween, they were offering specials so my wife got the Pumpkin Pancake Combo ($16.50), which came with two pancakes, bacon and eggs. She really liked it, enough to bring the leftover pancake back home. I will almost always choose a dinner if available, even if breakfast time, so got the Chicken Parmesan ($17.75). It did not come with noodles, but instead choice of garlic bread or corn bread, scoop of mashed potatoes and creamed corn (there were other choices but don't remember them). I thought everything was good, reminding me of a good meal from a cafeteria...expertly assembled using food service ingredients (mostly from frozen).
Service was excellent throughout. Liz is definitely a professional, knowing how to juggle multiple tables, knowing the right times to check up on us, and always keeping a calm, pleasant demeanor.
One can tell the normal clientele from the background music....it was music style from the early 20th century. Hof's could definitely fit anywhere across the country, as long as there are older folks in the area who appreciate old fashioned diners in a bit of an upscale environment. There's no reason to bring out of towners here...chances are, they would have a similar favorite restaurant like this from where they came.
