Hofsas House Hotel

Such an unbelievable gem of a stay! Ever since I found them in 2024, to celebrate my first job, I have made it my mission to save up to come here once a year! I've been here 3 times now and since I stayed in different rooms each time, I feel very confident to leave an honest review(not requested or asked by staff) Pricing: Very reasonable for the area, cheap pet fee(only 30$ per night) and they welcome large dogs. They also price-match so always book directly with them. They are always quick to answer the phone or messages when booking! Even during off-season, our preferred time to go, there is plenty to do locally with their gorgeous beaches and greenery, and the Calla Lily Valley. Or even just relaxing in your cozy room and doing sunset beach walks. Rooms: Always extremely clean, no bugs, very spacious. Each room literally feels like it's own separate little cottage, with unique decorations and decor. Pictures attached Amenities/Features: Some have different amenities than others so always feel free to ask(my favorite is absolutely the one with heated floors and working fireplace during Winter)! We have always gotten at-least a fridge and microwave, in addition to the soaps, shampoos, conditioner, coffee, creamer, hangers, iron, and hairdryer. :) They have a vending machine on site for snacks.The tvs always have an HDMI port so if we don't want cable, we can hook up the laptop to watch movies or our game system to play some games! They also have tables/chairs to be able to work if you need to, plenty of outlets as well.They offer complimentary breakfast every morning! Nice spread of fruit, pastries, and yogurts along with tea, coffee, or hot chocolate. I have been during very busy season and off seasons and they are always very well-stocked for their guests and have never seen them run out of breakfast items.They have a sauna and heated pool available as well, and an amazing view of the ocean on the top floor with some seating available if you want to sip your morning coffee and look out at the ocean. Location: It is less than 20 minute drive from the Bay area with more touristy things like boat/underwater tours, Monterey Bay Aquarium, and vintage/thrift shops. Tons of seafood places. Carmel has tons of pet-friendly shops and eateries so we prefer to be local and have gotten many amazing recommendations from staff along with a map for guidance. The beach is literally less than 15 minute walk from the hotel. Staff: I usually have the pleasure of speaking with Carrie when booking and she is such an absolute delight. Always willing to price-match, is always of great help when booking or needing assistance in the room, and always happy to see me and my pup when we stop by and we love her cheeriness!Any worker we see has always been very kind and helpful, recommending local spots and eateries, or providing extra towels and blankets, always willing to give a lil' pet for the pup. They always do an amazing job cleaning and restocking the room or respecting our privacy when we put up the do not disturb sign. Overall, an absolutely great experience each time, and we can't recommend them enough. Me and Paddington can't wait to see you all again!

Very clean room with great housemaid service each night! Good quality shampoo, conditioner, body wash and hand soap available. Smaller sized breakfast with some good options. Very cute and aesthetic design of the building and architecture. Close to town center where you can walk everywhere downtown and explore! The front desk was so friendly as well!

We checked into this hotel the day after Christmas unknowing that the village had been without power for 3 days. When we checked in at 3pm, the room was dark and cold. We decided to hope for the best and went out for a walk, went to dinner in Monterey, and when we came back, half of the hotel had power—but not our half. When I went to the desk the guy working said, yeah, the hotel is on two grids and yours should be back in by 11. No apology, no sign of hospitality, nothing. I told him this was not OK because there has been no power since we checked and we are supposed to sit in a dark, cold room and wait for the power to hopefully come on by 11? Only then did a woman appear and say she would check if there were any open rooms in the part of the hotel with power. She found one but only allowed us to move on the condition we would come back in the morning and see if we could stay in this room. We might have to move back to the first room. Again, no apology—like we had done something wrong by booking and paying for a room. When my husband went back to return the keys for the first room he spoke to someone else who said yes it was fine to stay where we were. Ok, great. Finally. Turns out the walls and ceilings are paper and we could hear everything in the rooms above and beside us. It was kind of comical that every single picture frame and mirror was askew. Even the bedside tables were haphazardly set next to the beds. I do not fault the hotel for the power outrage, the problem was the lack of hospitality and unwillingness to make us feel comfortable until we fought for it. The location is great but I have stayed at much nicer hotels with far more hospitable staff on the same street. Do not recommend

We booked the hotel as we planned to do the 17 mile drive and did not want to drive too far after the trip. The hotel is in Bavarian style and located at walking distance of shops and restaurants. The hotel offers free parking and has a heated pool. Rooms are ok and clean. The only thing that bothered us, is that there is no breakfast room and we needed to take the food to our room to eat. It was also very limited in choice. |The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful.

The location is fabulous and very close to trendy Carmel-by-the-Sea. The place is extremely dated and although they want to keep true to the theme, which seems to be vintage cottage Germanic, it does need some tidying up. The rooms are clean and the views can be obstructed due to the location but all in all it’s cozy and certainly very reasonable pricing considering you are walking distance to Carmel’s downtown shops and restaurants. Do not come here for the breakfast if that’s your deciding factor. It’s only wrapped pastries, coffee and juice. We didn’t use the pool, far too cold for us, even for late May. The parking was full for Memorial Day weekend but there usually available street parking as well. The walls are thin so you do hear neighbors walking around. The front staff is hit or miss. One gentlemen was friendly and helpful but the morning breakfast shift lady was not welcoming at all. The bathroom water was somewhat updated and water pressure and heat were fabulous. They just need to invest in keeping up with the place.

If you have not experienced Hofsas you need to book today! This hotel is the perfect cottage like feel. The rooms are spacious, clean, and have amazing views with birds chirping all hours of the day. The larger rooms come with options of a kitchenette, and a fireplace. The staff is extremely kind, and give you plenty of suggestions on what you should experience around town. The hotel has a heated pool that feels like bath water, a sauna which is kept in pristine condition, and a breakfast you will not want to pass up(its from a local eatery and its 5 stars for sure). The hotel is within walking distance to downtown and the historical beach. The hotel is family friendly, so you wont feel bad if your kid makes noise, or wants to be loud in the pool. The room service is fantastic, we left our room a mess and came back to everything neat and in better condition than we would have thought of. The room comes with coffee and local chocolates that you will want to go find more of. Book here and you will find yourself coming back!

The rooms do the job- but that is it. Very outdated. Carpeted, with quite a few stains. The type of room you feel you should keep your socks on in. I did appreciate the small charm feel of the hotel overall, but will not stay here again. Additionally the doors and walls are very thin, and we were woken up multiple times simply by others walking by in the hallway, and the guests walking in the room above us.

Hofsas House Hotel feels like stepping into a postcard, but with dogs and a heated pool. The crest out front says “leisure with dignity,” and that sets the tone. Our room was spacious and cozy with a fireplace, and we loved how dog-friendly the whole place is (a must in Carmel-by-the-Sea). The hand-painted murals give it so much character, and the location couldn’t be better—walkable to everything but still peaceful. It’s charming without trying too hard, which is rare. Would absolutely stay here again.

Nothing 'super' fancy - but dog friendly , comfy beds, centrally located, lovely pool, continental breakfast AND a SAUNA!! The staff was exceptionally friendly too. Zero complaints.

Absolutely adorable hotel!!!! Great location because it is walking distance from all the nearby businesses/cutest village and a 10min walk to the beach! We got a great room on the second floor with an amazing view!! The sunset was beautiful from there (and we even ate breakfast out there because it was such a lovely spot). I didn't give it 5 stars because I had a really hard time sleeping with it being such a "breeze friendly" atmosphere. I loved the cooler weather but it was cold at night (the blankets were warm enough). You freeze coming out of the shower (which the shower head is very low and there is no conditioner because it's included with the shampoo. But it smells good and their lotion smells great too). The water does heat up really fast though. The pillows were very thin but they do give you several. The hair dryer was excellent and very needed! The part I couldn't stand was the strong smell of cleaning supplies and what seemed like urine in the bathroom. It was overpowering whenever I stepped into the bathroom. However, the view was great and the half doors are very unique to Carmel and worked great for when we wanted a breeze to come in. Breakfast pastries were delicious and yogurt and bananas were needed. Their decorations are absolutely beautiful (including all the flowers and plants)!!! All the staff is so friendly too and helpful (when I needed water to refill my water bottle, they refilled it for me).

I can only provide the highest possible recommendation for this wonderful facility. Their professional staff was, on every level, fully accommodating in all respects. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and have every intention to return on an annual basis. I will not hesitate to reference the Hofsas House to anyone in need of hotel recommendations at Carmel-by-the-Sea, California,.

A very cute and quaint European rustic cottage bed and breakfast hotel in Carmel! Location was on the edge of downtown Carmel - but still walkable distance to the center! I loved the pink aesthetic, very picturesque! Floors and stairs are a bit of a maze, but that adds to its charm. Walls are a bit thin, so sound is able to travel pretty well between your neighboring units. The furniture also also adorable - but they could use some refreshing and some serious deep cleaning. They also provide breakfast and coffee daily, which included Danishes, muffins, yogurt, fresh fruit, coffee, tea, and orange juice! Our room also had a fireplace and they provided starter logs as well, which was a nice bonus! There's also a microwave, coffee machine, mini fridge, utensils, and plates/bowls!

We are a family of four traveling with our dog, and we stayed at Hofsa's House 2 weeks ago. We stayed in the family suite. It was the cutest little cottage, with every amenity that you would need while you were away from home. They didn't miss a thing! It was light and bright with a cute Carmel style decor inside it was like our own private little Airbnb. It is also in the perfect location, a few streets away from the main street... So it is not too loud. The breakfast in the morning was very good, and the customer service is very good as well. when we return to Carmel, we will only be staying here!

I adore this hotel. It has good reviews for a reason. Service: excellent; everyone was so nice and accommodating Room: very comfortable & I love the Dutch doors for the ocean breeze. Bed was great - slept well. Extra bonus for them being dog friendly so my fur baby could join us Location: sweet!! Right in town so we could walk to the bakery or restaurants as needed. Food: light breakfast included with your stay: variety of pastries, fruit, coffee and OJ; decent for being free Bottom line if you're looking for a cute hotel that's dog friendly, this is the spot.

My boyfriend and I stayed here for two nights and had an amazing time. Michelle at the front desk was an absolute angel and gave a run down of places to try and Carmel - all great recommendations! The location was perfect because it was away from all the craziness, but still very central. It was clean, charming, and beautiful. We loved it

The pink buildings and decals at Hofsas are adorable. The pool is clean and warm, the thermostat in the bedroom worked well, and the bathroom floor was heated. Our room was large and had a wonderful view, and there was even a little kitchen with a fridge and table to sit at. But traffic noise was loud at times, as was noise from the room overhead. And as is all too often the case at hotels, garbage morning--on Thursday when we were there--was difficult to sleep through.

Honestly one of the cutest hotels I stayed at ,went this past weekend and truly enjoyed my stay. It was clean and the customer service was amazing. I got ocean view and so waking up in the morning was such a beautiful view to see. It was perfect walking distance to everything .I would definitely stay here again. Dog-friendly, cozy, family-owned inn with character. We stayed here recently and, while it was a little noisy right outside of our room in the mornings with housekeeping set up next door, we enjoyed our time here. The inn is in a convenient location to walk to the restaurants and shops in town. The continental breakfast each morning included fresh pastries from a local bakery, juice, yogurt, fruit, and a good pot of coffee which we brought back to our room to enjoy. The pool is small but good enough for my husband to swim some short laps. I especially loved how dog-friendly they are! They even gave us a collapsible water bowl that we brought with us for lovely walks along the beach.

This hotel is in a great location, within walking distance to shops and restaurants. We got an ocean view room and us waiting a clean and small but well appointed room. The customer service , especially from Fernando, was exceptional.

I was shocked to see some of the lower reviews for this inn! My fiancé and I tend to be a bit on the pickier side when picking our lodging and thoroughly enjoyed our stay here! This was a last minute trip for us and we didn't want to break the bank on lodging so the price point here was perfect for us. The inn was incredibly convenient to the wineries in Carmel valley and it was very cute with a German theme that we found adorable. The staff was very helpful at check in and there is plenty of parking in the back which was very convenient for us. Bed was comfy, room was clean and had a large balcony that we enjoyed sitting out on. They are also dog friendly! My favorite part of the room was that the bathroom had heated floors! That was such a nice surprise and did not go unnoticed! We will definitely be back for our next quick trip to the wineries :)

It is one of the more unique & pleasant hotels to stay at with only a few minor inconveniences. Located at a quieter part of downtown, the Hofsas House resembles a fabled Dutch architecture from the 19th century, with wall murals to match. The main parking lot is located at the back of the building, this can be accessed via an entrance adjacent to the office. Entrance is narrow & has a precipitous drop that can be frightening or thrilling, depending on your cardiac conditions. If you missed this entrance like us, at the end of the hotel there is another hidden unmarked driveway, it's actually a 1-way exit for the main parking lot! There are also 4-5 spots directly in front of the hotel on San Carlos St, but those were usually taken. Additional street parking were plentiful nearby. The office/front lobby is small but has a cozy comfy atmosphere, with inviting couches & fire place. Here can be a cozy place to enjoy coffee or HH beverages during happier times. The lady at the office was very friendly and gave clear and precise instructions. We got an ocean view King room on 4th floor, there was no elevator. Luckily we only had to drag our dunnage up 1 flight of stairs as we parked on San Carlos. If you park at the main lot beneath you will have to scale several flights of stairs to reach the upper floors. Like most Carmel hotels, "ocean view" essentially meant a glimpse of the sea, but we knew that from past experiences. Our room didn't have a private balcony, but the view from the outside corridor was still lovely. We loved the plantation shutters on the windows as well as the unique Dutch door, it was the first time I have ever seen one. There was also a common area on our floor that serves as a sun deck, with outdoor tables & chairs to boot. It's a great place to sip your drinks while catching some virus-killing UV lights or just simply admiring the sunset. The reg king room was adequate though not spacious. Naturally the bed took up most of the room, an old fashion TV stand/dresser was a bit obstructive. Illumination was provided by 3 table lamps, they should consider recess lights to free up more precious counter space for guests. A small folding leaf table & 2 chairs served as the dining/work station. One of the leaf did not work and thus we had to eat our meals in a confined fashion. Again the table lamp prob needs to go. The bed itself has a relatively firm & comfy mattress. The pillows were a bit lumpy, thin and relatively small. You will prob need at least 2 of those per guests. Bathroom was quite interesting, it's where you will find a mini fridge, coffee maker, coffee mugs & wine glasses. The towels were of descent qualities & were artfully folded. A small wicker basket contained cute items such as shampoos, soaps, lotions, makeup removal wipes & small Purell sanitizing pads. Shower was hot and had good pressure, keep in mind we were there during slow times. The walk-in shower was pentangular and small, if you are 5'7" your head might hit the shower head, if your are 6'3" you will need to stoop once inside. The caddy area was tiny and can only hold bar soaps and small containers. Our room was located next to the stairs so there were the usual foot traffic noises. In the crack of dawn there were more street noises as the big garbage/recycle trucks announced their presence. I found this fairy consistent in Carmel regardless days of the week. Breakfast was prepaid for and amazingly they actually served it even during this COVID crisis. It consisted of basic pastries such as danish, juices, fruits (banana, apple and tangerines), Yoplait, a jug of piping hot coffee with packages of creamer and sugar. It wasn't great but I though it adequate and artfully arranged on a tray so you can carry it back to your room. Overall we quite relished the hospitalities and the uniqueness of Hofsas House, will def consider returning.

Loved this place! Beautiful and clean premises! Good service and courteous staff. They have a big suite for 6 people. Breakfast is served in the lobby. A vending machine is available for water and soda. A short walk from Ocean Ave.

Lovely family run hotel in beautiful Carmel! Carrie and her staff are amazing and very welcoming. We love the location and the European hospitality, the rooms are clean and the area is perfect for walking and enjoying all of the treasures in Carmel. Great breakfast which is a great bonus along with the swimming pool. Thank you Hofsas for treating us so kindly this week! We will see you soon!

Hofsas House is a cheerful, family & dog friendly place to stay in Carmel-By-The Sea. We were warmly greeted at check-in and found an easy parking spot on the property. The hotel employees were all very nice from the front desk staff to housekeeping. We were very happy with our room. It had a view, was bright, comfortable and very clean. The kitchen and dining table was a great perk. We enjoyed the heated pool, dry sauna and continental breakfast. The potted plants throughout the property was a nice touch. Our bathroom had recently been remodeled and was very clean. The decor style reminded me of my Grandparent's, so it was a nice change to stay in a place that didn't have the same modern gray decor as everywhere else. I highly recommend the Hofsas House and we will stay here again next time we are in Carmel.

We planned a last minute getaway to Carmel and I found this place on Yelp. They offered and gave me the 10% discount advertised on Yelp. Everyone at the front counter was super friendly! We booked the poolside room with single queen bed. The room was cute. The pool is heated! Everything is in walking distance which we loved. We had no trouble with parking on the property so we didn't need to find parking on the street. The only warning is that it is such an intimate place that we could hear everything from our room but we were hardly in the room so it did not bother us, especially for the low price we paid! Breakfast is complimentary and just needs to be picked up in the morning from the front office. It was filling. Everyone was very friendly.

PAPER.THIN.WALLS! Awoke this morning thinking it was noon (checkout time) by how loud it was outside with people walking on the floor right by our door, car alarms going off, and our neighboring guest speaking very loudly on the phone. Turns out it's only 8 AM. Besides that, the room is comfortable. The floors in the bathroom are heated. It meets the necessities for a spontaneous stay in Carmel for the night. Ocean ave is a 6 min downhill walk which is the Main Street with all the restaurants and cute shops.

Great place to stay for a reasonable price. Room was clean with two comfy chairs. Bathroom had a heated floor--so nice. Continental breakfast was adequate. This place has a hot sauna. Lovely! We walked to lunches and dinners- convenient location. Looks out over pines and a peek of the ocean. Peaceful and quiet. Would definitely stay here again.

Where do I start? We came to Carmel with our pup and this was the perfect location! We rented out Cottage #8. It was perfect. A wonderful fireplace, fridge, microwave and heated bathroom floors!! Front desk staff is amazing. Continental breakfast in the lobby. Parking is great, heated clean pool and two saunas. Walking distance to everything. We will def be coming back. Thank you Hofsas House.

We had an amazing time! Our room was very clean, bed was comfy. We stayed in room 7 which was separate from the main building and it was amazing! So secluded and extremely romantic. Breakfast served in the morning was light but exactly as advertised! Short walk to the center of town and the beach. Would 100% stay here again.

This is not the hotel you bring your 6'4 boyfriend to. I could barely fit into the shower, and I am a compact lady. I am not sure how my boyfriend contorted himself to fit his limbs into that tiny box. This is the smallest shower I have ever seen. Previous reviewers were not exaggerating. The room was simple and acceptable. The bed was comfortable enough, although it did feel a little worn. I thought the placement of the refrigerator in the bathroom was a little strange. The walls are super thin, so you will hear everything and everyone will hear you. I would also recommend a better ventilation system. Pros: Ample Parking and only a short walk to downtown I appreciated the charm of the hotel, and I loved the location. However, I was a little underwhelmed by this experience. Yes, this hotel is affordable and convenient. But, if you are looking to impress your companion, this might not be your selection.

Stayed here for a weekend while visiting Carmel. The price was very appropriate! Very cute! The room was a lot bigger than I thought which was great! The place is also a short walking distance to town. We did not have problem with parking whenever we got back around 3/4pm. A problem I had while here was that the staff on duty when we checked in said they don't deliver breakfast even though I saw numerous time online that they said they do deliver. Wasn't sure about that but it wasn't a big problem. The walls are thin here. Our upstairs neighbors were relatives of Big Foot or something but man did they stomp. Our next door neighbor had a lot of fun on the bed the first night we were there if you know what I mean. The next day, a family checked in next door and between the kids crying and the parents lecturing them, I'm surprised I got any sleep. A suggestion I have for the hotel is possibly invest in some window curtains! It was very bright at night even with our blinds closed. Overall, the staff were super friendly! Next time I'm back, I'll ask to get a room at the very top and possibly in the corner since the walls are so thin.

We brought our family to Carmel for a spontaneous over night trip. We discovered Hofsas online and we were not disappointed. The suite was comfortable and roomy enough for the five of us. It was all very well kept and nice and quiet. We enjoyed dinner on the balcony before going out to explore Carmel. It's close enough to walk downtown but far enough not to be in the middle of it all. We will definitely be back and recommend it to friends.

We came for Valentine's Day and our anniversary, after reading this was a romantic stay for couples. It was anything but, and we checked out early. This felt like a grandma's house that hasn't been updated in 40 years. Pros: location, pool and sauna. Included breakfast consisted of pastries and coffee and fresh fruit. The toiletries seemed okay. Cons: there's no a/c or air circulation of any kind in the rooms, so covid-19 can easily spread between guests, though the rooms did look very clean. The shower was too small height wise, and I'm only 5'8. I had to squat down to get my face wet, forget about washing my hair. The shower head/handle and the water pipes also pulled out of the wall and felt like they were going to break. The room was non-smoking, and a cigarette was behind the nightstand. Everything was super old. The room definitely needs an update. For being here for our anniversary, it was kinda awful. The bed sucked, the pillows were completely flat and the sheets were thin and itchy, there was one towel each and they were quite thin, and the shower is meant for apparently very short people. The TV was tiny and as big as my home computer monitor. You have to walk your breakfast tray down a steep driveway and it seemed very impractical if you're caring coffee and mugs. this place is completely not ADA accessible as there's no other route and lots of steep steps. Older folks who need assistance, do not stay here. I nearly tripped and fell several times myself. Overall, this feels like a dated roadside motel that I'd pay $50 or so for, but for being ranked as one of the best spots of Carmel and spending $200/night, I expected much much more. I wish the experience were better, but we left truly disappointed.

The hotel was fine, cute little thing. They do have a breakfast included but it was very weird. The pastries are all individually saran wrapped and they do not tell you what they are. I had a croissant and bit into it only to find jelly inside. Was not labeled anywhere and same go for the muffins, some have nuts and they do not tell you. They did have fruit, orange juice and yogurt as well. Next thing was that on the last night we were there, we saw ants in the bathroom. Mind you, my fiancé and I are very tidy and kept our food in sealed, air tight containers. They didn't even look like they were going for the food, just going in between rooms through the walls. Overall it was a nice room and the service was great!

We stayed here for a post birthday weekend getaway and we had a great time. The room is spacious and cIean. But the buy in for me is the vintage, shabby chic feel, plus the fireplace and the dutch door add more character to it. The bathroom seems newly renovated and the pressure of the water on the shower heard is astounding! It was refreshingly strong that I immediately felt clean even without scrubbing! The room also comes with a mini refrigerator and microwave to store and heat your leftovers up! It's roughly a 5-min walk to carmel downtown, it's so close to everything yet quiet and peaceful, I was able to get a good night's sleep. Customer service is good, requests are mostly accommodated. The price I would say is the most affordable compared to the other inns in the area but still not at all cheap. Parking is ample and free! Win! So why only 4/5 stars if I seemed to really enjoy the place? It was because I was under the assumption that the room comes with an ocean view, with the price we paid. But it would be good to ask for an upgrade since there is no additional fee. Our room is situated at the far end, which felt like no one had really stayed there since the extra comforter smelled dusty. The booking came with a free continental breakfast: mostly pastries and fresh fruit. However the coffee was sad, it was diluted. And since coffee is life, for me, I had to have my caffeine fox somewhere else. Overall, I would still recommend this place, but remember ask or request first, if you would like to have the ocean view!

Carmel is a place I never get tired of going to because it reminds me of Princeton NJ, where I grew up, if Princeton NJ was on a hill, (it's mostly flat). Always things to do, even during Covid, Breakfast is still served, you grab a basket and take it back to your room. Rooms are a bit pricey it being winter time but people are pleasant and they have a sauna and a heated pool! Room was very clean, not there for the TV but it was fine. Things to do in the area-Go down towards the beach, take a right and a left and follow the road onwards to 17 Mile, it's about $10.50 but you can get that taken off your restaurant stay (if you order out, things may be different with the lockdown). Well worth a couple of hours and the drive is peaceful and scenic, I love the beaches. On the way back we went to Pfeiffer Beach which is EXTREMELY rare to get in (weekdays easier), it's a long drive down a 1 lane road, with cars in both directions, but ...SUBARU! woo hoo lol. Always enjoy the hotel and the people here, great walks at night too, dog friendly too! (There's an understandable fee just incase your dog doesn't behave themselves which always seems to happen when they're not at home).

Very unique with a lot of history. All of the paintings and family history is pretty interesting. Staff and owner are very sweet. Definitely older structuring and pretty thin walls but all the amenities with a beautiful view and just outside all of the hustle and bustle of the shopping district.

I have stayed here many times over the last 10 years. It's funky but the location is terrific: far enough away from the bustle of downtown Carmel, but still within walking distance. Staff is friendly and rooms are clean, if not a bit dated. BUT,this year didn't go well. I came for some much needed rest and relaxation. One big con is the paper thin walls. Normally I come during off season so it's not a big issue. The hotel is fully occupied and the noise is annoying. You can hear every step and conversation. There are a lot of stairs so you hear bags being dragged up and down and stomping feet. My room faces the pool which has been used by screeching, yelling children til 8:00 pm. I know children like to play but the noise echoes all throughout the complex making it hard to unwind. And I can't change rooms, due to full occupancy. If you come, I recommend off season and requesting a street side room. Stay away from pool area if it's during any kind of school break.

I've stayed here twice in the past year and couldn't recommend enough! The staff is friendly and accommodating. The Dutch doors and overall antique vibe of the building and decor are adorable. I have found the beds to be very comfortable and breakfast is light but adequate. Don't expect the modern amenities of upscale hotels, but come here to relax and be cozy. Additionally, it's walking distance to everything in Carmel-by-the-Sea and has plenty of parking in the lot and nearby streets.

This hotel is old and dirty and disgusting. Listen to the bad reviews, they are right. What a shame that this family has such a beautiful property in a gorgeous city and has let it go downhill so badly. The mattresses look and feel like they might be older than Carmel itself. Avoid this hell hole at all costs. There are too many other lovely properties available.

I needed a bit of extra help understanding my hotel bill, and Jennifer, the person working the front desk, told me it wasn't her problem, called me racial slurs (!) and literally walked out of the office leaving me alone in the lobby. I love this hotel but this made me very upset.

I love visiting beautiful Carmel. I was recently there to meet two college friends to celebrate a milestone birthday together. Our experience at the Hofsas House could not have been more wonderful! The location of the hotel is absolutely perfect. The rooms are very clean and very comfortable. And everyone at the hotel is tremendously kind and gracious and helpful. The owner of this family-owned hotel was so gracious and welcoming to us. I had to change my reservation via telephone, and Fernando went out of his way to very kindly and efficiently help me with everything. Staying here was such a delightful and positive experience for all of us in our party. I look forward to bringing my husband to stay here next time we are in Carmel. What a true gem this hotel is!

I've literally been staying here my whole life. When I was a kid my family would stay here once a year. As an adult, I try to get back every two years or so. It's a simple, clean hotel with friendly staff. The king room with private balcony is my favorite. But if you are traveling with family or a larger group their two room family suites are great, too. Walkable to everything in Carmel. Don't forget to try their coffee, juice, and pastries in the morning.

5 stars for these guys! Had an absolute wonderful stay, wish I would have stayed for more than a night but I was just passing through. From the check in to the check out everything was super smooth. We stayed on the 4th floor with our two fur babies, and I must say the rooms were super clean and well maintained. The staff were very friendly and always helpful. Will definitely be back to Carmel and will definitely be staying here.

Great service, dog friendly and money location! An older building that could use a bit of renovation; however, Hofsas is meticulous, makes the best of what they have and offers reasonable rates. We received dog treats, water bowl, frisbee and dog shampoo at check in which was a really nice touch for a reasonable $30 dog fee per night. This was such a refreshing change having come from a horrible stay at the Pacific Blue Inn at Santa Cruz that was just terrible, expensive and charged $50 for a pet with zero amenities. Keep up the good work Hofsas!

This place was a surprise for me. So reasonably priced, well located and truly kind staff. The place really suited our needs.

OMG! BEST PLACE WE HAVE STAYED IN A LONG TIME! Not only was it an amazing location, the pool was open, they have an excellent continental breakfast and the rooms were HUGE and comfy! We would definitely stay here again and recommend to anyone who wanted to come to Carmel by the Sea. It was about a 2-3 min walk to downtown and a 10 min walk to the beach.

We were evacuated during the Carmel Fire, and the Hofsas House was gracious enough to discount rooms for those evacuated. While it was hard to be away from home we are so glad we stayed here. The staff was so kind and attentive, and the family rooms were just perfect for us. It made a difficult experience so much easier than it could have been. Will definitely return. Clean, older facility, well maintained and comfortable. Carmel is hilly, but easy walk to downtown, restaurants, and the beach. Take your time and enjoy the beauty. Nice, well maintained pool, dry sauna was a plus. Helpful staff. We will happily return. Gave five stars for the value, fairly priced.

I loved it!! At check in, we were greeted warmly and all questions answered. Our room - #41 was spacious with a fabulous view. We did not use the pool but it looked clean and inviting. Breakfast was grab and go delicious pastries. Great hospitality, great location, great views!

TL;DR: This hotel gets 4.8 stars out of 5 for me. The only real issues I had were there were no curtains on the windows (there were blinds) so more light got in at night then I would have liked and the shower was a bit on the small side. Not a huge deal for me but someone who was bigger might have a problem with it. I just got back from a wonderful two nights stay in Carmel and this hotel was amazing. I stayed July 18-20th 2020. I was in room 1 which is on the first floor and is one of the pool side queens. The pool hours are 9am- 9pm and the hotel really enforces that rule because by 9pm there was no one in the pool making noise which was great. The staff was all super friendly and welcoming. Check in was a breeze and if you have any questions about the area, from where to eat to what kind of activity's to do the staff is more then happy to help you out. The room itself was great, hard wood floors and a very nice queen size bed. The bed was very comfy, not to soft but not to hard. As a person who is a very picky sleeper the beds were really great. The shower in the bathroom is a bit on the small side, which was not really a problem for me but someone who is bigger might have a problem with it. The floor in the bathroom was even heated which was so nice especially when getting up in the middle of the night to use the restroom. The walls and floor/ceiling are a little thin, so if you plan to take a nap or have kidos who need a nap in the middle of the day keep in mind that you might be hearing your neighbors walk around and talking. Also keep in mind that the hotel is dog friendly, I didn't have any problems with barking dogs during my stay (though I am a early riser so if you plan to sleep in on your vacation you might have a different experience) but be aware that there might be dogs in the hotel. The hotel offers a light breakfast of pastries (croissants and muffins), yogurt, fruit and coffee or tea in the mornings served from 8am-10pm, they have trays you can load up and take back to your room which I really appreciated, a great way to start the day before heading off to explore or hit up the beach for a nice morning walk. Speaking of the beach, Carmel beach is only about a 10 min walk from the hotel, however be warned that the walk there is all downhill so the walk back is all uphill, which can be quite exhausting if you are not use to doing a lot of daily exercise. All in all my stay was amazing and I would definitely recommend staying at Hofsas House. If you have any questions about the hotel please let me know and I will do my best to answer them.

The real reason you want to stay here is for location: walking distance to Carmel's many offerings. The staff is super sweet, and welcoming to dogs (humans, too!). They offered my pup a frisbee and a treat upon arrival in exchange for the $50 pet fee. Breakfast is efficient. Accommodations are clean. All that being said, I could not WAIT to check out of Hofsas House, if only to vacate the stuffy, outdated room. As other reviews have stated, the showers are small and short (at 5'8", I could easily reach up and touch the ceiling). Carpeting made me wish I'd brought slippers. Not all rooms are created the same, and mine was fairly small. Furniture was cramped and outdated. Sort of reminded me of a compact version of what I imagine someone's great grandma's house to be like, right down to the creepy bedding. The most free space I had was in the bathroom, on the floor of which the mini fridge was placed. The "ocean view" room I paid for had barely a glimpse of the early morning Pacific Ocean; by afternoon, the glare is so bad that the almost nonexistent glimmer of water was lost. I regret paying for the upgrade. This was absolutely zero fault of the staff; this establishment has just not grown with the times. (Although some new interior flooring and a fresh coat of paint would certainly not hurt at all.) I can see how others might consider it "quaint" or "charming", but I seek out something a bit more modern when traveling.

My son was evacuated from his Peace Corps post very suddenly and needed a place to self quarantine. After a VRBO that we reserved called and cancelled due to corona virus we were in a mad scramble to find a place, with a kitchen with the hope of it not costing more than the allowance given to him by Peace Corps. Carrie and staff could not have been more gracious, helpful and accommodating. They even put a lock box on the door so he could maintain no contact to get into the room. He was cozy, comfy and thanks to this lovely hotel, had a soft landing on his abrupt arrival back to the states. I cannot speak more highly of this experience and am deeply appreciative to this hotel, staff and owner.

Reasonably priced for such an area so close to the main strip. The room is clean and updated, with just the amount of supplies you would expect. Noise level is moderate with foot and parking car noise, but nothing problematic late in the night. Bed is firm with lots of pillow choices. Room heating was not a problem to adjust. Shower stall had no light, but also not a problem due to enough bathroom light. The breakfast is very minimal: pastries, muffins, (weak) coffee, yogurt, and fruits. There is not much area in the lobby to eat breakfast, so they have trays to take it back to your room. I wish there was an option to skip it while taking a few dollars off the room rate. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Parking seems to be limited, but I never experienced a complete lack of spots. The nice thing about this location is that if you had to park on the street, you are in the zone where you do not need to move your car every hour. I also like that it is super close to the Weston Gallery. Recommended for budget travelers.

What an amazing spot. Some of the friendliest people I have ever met from the owners down to the staff. Wonderful pet friendly hotel. View of the ocean. Very nice sized rooms. Looking forward to several days left before we sadly have to leave for home. We will definitely be back. Owners that care about their guests are hard to come by. Do yourself a favor and book a stay. Walking distance to restaurants and shops. Yes it is an older hotel but it is very well maintained. Thank you so much for a wonderful stay.

The good: The size of our room was nice and included a fireplace and fridge. The bathroom was also spacious. The bed was really comfy. The not so good: the walls are super thin. You know exactly where housekeeping is in the mornings with their vacuums. Also, my wife wants you to know she didn't like the wallpaper.

My husband and I spent part of our northern California trip in the charming area of Carmel-by-the-Sea. We stayed at the Hofsas House which we greatly enjoyed. We had their continental breakfasts in our room and the balcony overlooking the ocean each morning. The staff was very friendly and helpful in pointing us where to eat and how to spend our time there. The room had a fireplace, kitchenette and a beautiful view of the ocean. It was walking distance to the downtown area and beach. They have a heated pool (one of the few in the area) with beautiful flowers all around it. It was not very busy during our time there which is always a bonus to me! Clean ample sized rooms with many amenities. Great location (what place in Carmel By The Sea isn't?) and excellent value. Parking is surprisingly good and the heated pool is a bonus. Hofsa House is highly recommended!
