Where To Eat And Drink In Chestnut Hill & Roxborough

"Tokyo Sushi is located inside The Market at the Fareway in Chestnut Hill. They offer counter service takeout and there’s a few tables on the side where you can eat your rolls and soak up the sun. Along with exceptional service, they have thick spring rolls made with fresh vegetables, dumplings, and some of the best sushi around (we love their tuna and salmon nigiri). And while there may be a wait when you show up, the affordability of each large roll ($10-$12) is a nice consolation prize. " - candis mclean, alison kessler

Had dinner here just the other day, it was nice it was not crowded at all but the service was still slow. The rolls were nice so was the miso and also the scallops in truffle sauce was quite good! They also offer a sushi boat we did not get it this time but maybe in the future.

The fish was fresh and delicious! Great waiting staff and a quiet atmosphere. Overall a great experience. Ill be coming back for sure!

I'm not sure how I've lived here in the area for just about 10 years, but never heard of this place. The sushi was great and service was phenomenal. Very attentive and good for recommendations. Atmosphere is quaint and cozy. Will be back.

I've been going to Hokka Hokka on and off for the last 10 plus years. They have had their high points and low points during that time period. Their highest point was from 2011 to 2014. This 3 year period, they had a very talented Head Sushi Chef. They had innovative and delicious sushi, creative, and tasty bar drinks, and their staff was amongst the best in the area. I love coming during all the seasons, but especially during the winter season when they have their fireplace on. Haven't been there since COVID, but all my photos are from my decade of frequenting this restaurant. Here are my recommendations: Appetizers: Negimaki Fried Oysters Tempura Uni Spoon Specialty Rolls: Chestnuthill Farmer's Spicy Love King Kong No Name Kitchen Food: Salmon Teriyaki Hamachi Kama (when they have it) Dessert: Literally, any of their ice cream cakes Mochi Green Tea Tempura Ice Cream (yes, you heard correctly, fried Ice cream. Also available in vanilla) Need to come back to Hokka to see how it has come along post-covid.

Under new Management from what I heard. Always talked this place up. Walked in tonight and they told me they couldn't make our order because they were busy. 4 tables were served. Asked for a Manager. No Manager. Asked me if I was new to the area. My husbands family has been here for 90+ years, they know Chesnut Hill. If I could give it zero stars I would. 1 star is a compliment!

Google
went to this place because i was craving udon noodles with this cold weather recently and i was disappointed… i looked at the google reviews before me and my boyfriend went and since it has 4+ stars reviews we decided to go to the place. pretty cute atmosphere and nice staff, HOWEVER i feel like we got fooled by the outside. i’m a noodle lover and had so many udon dishes before, but the tempura udon i got was very bland and tasted like water down. i take the texture of the noodles seriously and it felt it was overdone and mushy. tempura was okay, they had broccoli tempura which i thought it was interesting. the question is…. why is my review only gives one star ?!?!?? my boyfriend ordered chicken teriyaki AND I HONESTLY FELT DISRESPECTED TO ASIAN CULTURE. everything on that plate looked like a frozen food that has been microwave, unseasoned just boiled broccoli, dry and hard brown rice, chicken that the sauce was just poured on top ……. sorry but this is honestly embarrassing 😭 can believe this dish was TWENTY DOLLARS.

Google
Good but not great! We tried their special CHIRASHI BOWL, Yaki Vegetable Udon noodles and veggie rolls. Overall the taste and service was good, but nothing special. So I think they are overpriced. The sashimi in the Chirashi Bowl was fresh but lacked flavor. It was as if the ingredients were placed in a bowl and served. They need to add some flavor/spice if this is their ‘special’ plate. Also the veggie rolls were bland. The ambience was nice. The music choice was bad. I prefer eastern instrumental music played in a sushi restaurant, definitely not pop music. They need improvement to deserve the additional star, just 4/5 now.

Google
The waiter was attentive, but appeared to be impatient. It was as if we were seen as repeat guest and should already be familiar with the menu. He seemed perturbed when we weren't moving at his pace. The food, however, was excellent. Nice crowd, but not where you want to go for an elegant date night. Too loud and too casual. If you just want good sushi and a lot of atmosphere, great place to go.

Yelp
This restaurant is definitely a hidden gem. From the moment we walked in, we was seated promptly. I decided to try the Hollywood roll and the Spicy Salmon Crunch, and I was thoroughly impressed with both. Each sushi roll had fresh ingredients. My girlfriend ordered the Lobster roll, and it was so delightful that it's now on my list of must-try for my next visit. Our waiter was exceptionally attentive and patient, ensuring we had everything we needed. We were the only ones sitting in the restaurant since we arrived 10-15 min after it opened. It was a quiet dining experience.

Yelp
Was craving sushi & sake without the will to drive into the city. Always see this spot so decided to pop into Hokka Hokka, and it was a great time. Sat at the sushi bar and watched them diligently prepare the meals. Sampled a ton of rolls. They typically have a special roll. This time it was a Phoenix Roll. Had a little bit of everything. Next course was the chicken and veggie Udon noodles. Next level flavor. Lastly, I couldn't leave with trying the Ungagi (eel). Servers made great suggestions and the drinks were very good. Make sure to get a martini! The meal was more expensive than I thought but I left extremely satisfied with the experience.

Yelp
This quaint Japanese restaurant has some of the freshest sushi I've ever had! The inside is basic, with cute candles and adorable cloth napkins made into a shape adorning each table. The menu is vast, with plenty of options for everyone. Our waiter greeted us immediately after sitting. He was very attentive and friendly. If you're ever in the Germantown/Chestnut Hill area make sure you stop past Hokka Hokka!
google avatar

Yelp
Food is absolutely fantastic. I had the Sunday Morning Roll and shared some Shrimp Shumai. Really really good. Service was good. Only thing that disappointed me was the drinks. They serve very basic American drinks and cocktails to the point where I'm not sure if it's even worth it for them to serve drinks. I was at least expecting some Suntory Japanese Whiskey cocktails or something. The food is why you come here so 5 stars nonetheless!

Yelp
I was there with 3 black friends. The racism we experienced from their server was appalling. Ive literally never left a restaurant this angry. Despite enjoying their food I will never set foot in that place again.

Yelp
Great place for sushi and tempura in Chestnut Hill. Gyoza and agedashi tofu also tasty!

MariaLisa L.

Yelp
great food and service ,terrific cocktails Sushi was fresh and delicious nice ambiance but a little noisy at times

Yelp
Good but not what it used to be. Sushi is very small for what you pay. 20 bucks for a special roll and it tasted like a normal basic roll. Quality wasn't anything great

Yelp
First time dining at hokka hokka with family. I was very excited to try the Philadelphia rolls & beef dumplings soups. Let me make this clear, the food was horrible. I specifically asked for cooked salmon for the Philadelphia rolls. I received raw salmon, I don't want salmonella so I sent it back immediately. For the beef dumpling soup , horrible & way too soggy. I requested to speak to the manger and explained to him the issue . The manger took both items off my bill , it's going on 8 o'clock and nothing open . I went from wanting sushi to end up driving to Jamaican d and an getting oxtail platter.

Angela E.

Yelp
The service and manager, Trent, was horrible. I ordered the Spiced Iced Tea drink, and it tasted like lime juice and water. I asked for a new drink and he told me NO, that is what I ordered. He took it and they added more lime juice. After persistence it was taken off of my bill and I drank water. His attitude was shocking-- I said with this customer service like this, this would be my last time there, and his response... that is fine. your choice. If I could give the restaurant and him a zero rating I would! absolutely...no customer service. Oh, the menu does not have an adequate selection of sushi options. The place has gone down hill! Go somewhere else is my suggestion!

Yelp
Hokka Hokka is a Japanese restaurant near to where I live in Philadelphia that has reopened for takeout during the Covid-19 pandemic. Of course I want to support local eateries and I did. But in all honesty I do have to say my meal from here was only decent and not overly noteworthy. I had better luck when I ate here a few years ago. My favorite item to order at Hokka Hokka is the appetizer Nagimaki. This delicious rolled up steak with scallions is tasty and perfectly cooked and makes for a superb way to begin a meal (unless you are a vegetarian). My main course of Udon noodles with vegetable and shrimp tempura was less successful. The noodles had little flavor (but fortunately being at home I could def dress them up) and the tempura was okay but needed some sauces (which again I had at home) to bring out some flavor. A standard miso soup also came with the takeout. One of the owners was a little bit annoyed at me when I took a photo from the front door into the restaurant. I guess these are jumpy days because I don't know know exactly what offended him. In a way he then wound up slightly offending me. Oh well, these are troubled times so I'm going to overlook all that. And wanting to support local restaurants and also remembering a past meal here which I liked better, I'm going to bestow four stars on Hokka Hokka.

Yelp
The last time I dined here was a few years back, and I'm writing strictly in regards to what I experienced here as a Diner. From then until now, I don't know if anything has changed, but in my experiences, the food and service at Hokka was amazing! They had weekly to monthly Sushi, Kitchen, and Drink specials, and they were not only creative, but delicious. For appetizers, I'm not sure if they still serve it, but their Uni Spoons, Seared Black Pepper Salmon, White Tuna Carpaccio, Negimaki, Fried Oysters, and Sashimi Salad are amazing! For an entree, you cannot go wrong with the King Kong, No Name, Cape Cod, Ruby Red, and Spicy Love rolls. You just can't. If you have not tried these rolls yet, then get on the phone and put in a order for takeout!!!!! The Salmon Teriyaki dinner is also fabulous. If they have it available, ask for their Hamachi Kama, it's out of this world! You can't go home until you try the Green Tea Tempura ice cream for dessert. Fried and Ice Cream! You can't go wrong with this combination! The quarantine hasn't been easy on anyone, especially local restaurant owners and their staff, hoping and praying that Hokka can pull through!

Yelp
Delicious and amazing! Highly recommended! Get the sushi boat with family or a group of friends!

Yelp
We got delicious takeout from here for valentine's day, I was so impressed by how fresh and elicits everything was. I had the sashimi salad with salmon sashimi and my husband had the seaweed salad. We split the scallops with truffle sauce (another appetizer). We also had a bunch of rolls. I would say the weakest roll was the spider roll, but the volcano, and spicy scallop were ver good! Overall a great experience!

Yelp
Quality of the sushi is acceptable, however the portions are very small for what you pay. Perhaps it's because of the current economic conditions. Not worth going back.

Chuck S.

Yelp
Good spot with a more limited menu but excellent cocktails. Good service. Busy, noisy but still good.

Yelp
I got takeout and spent over $90 worth of food here and only a quarter of it was edible. The only thing good here is the sushi as the sushi is pretty fresh. All of the cooked foods were all overcooked, burnt and had no flavor. The food here is very overpriced for what you get. You can get better food elsewhere for less. Avocado tempura app - Too mushy and had no flavor. Could not eat it. I love avocado I salads and sushi, but fried it tastes completely different. Grilled scallops app - 3 scallops, all overcooked, and two of them had a little sand in them. Disgusting. Shrimp tempura dinner - 4 small pieces of shrimp and 4 pieces of sweet potato. The tempura was not crunchy and it was soggy. The portion was small and not worth it. Filet mignon teriyaki dinner - I asked for medium and my steak was burnt on the outside and overcooked in the middle. (see photo). I can't believe I paid $22 for this and can barely eat it. Small portion as well. Smoked salmon sushi - fresh California roll - tasted good to me and fresh. Who can screw that up? I would NOT recommend this place whatsoever, unless you're coming here just for the sushi.

Yelp
Really good Japanese food at a great price and in a cozy environment! We had their bento box lunches and they were absolutely delicious and big in portion. In particular the Beef Negimaki Teriyaki bento were sooo good. The beef is wrapped into the shape of a sushi with some vegetable and sauce inside. It was so tender and juicy. We were absolutely blown away with this dish! Our regret of the trip to Philadelphia is that we did not get a chance to return back to this restaurant to have this bento again! The other bento was a salmon teriyaki bento. It was equally good, a very well pan fried salmon, crispy skin and soft tender interior. Great great Japanese restaurant. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Grace and her team are amazing. Our family has been patronizing Hokka Hokka for 12 years. Great food, bartender, and always welcoming.

Yelp
We tried this place for the first time on Sunday night of Presidents Day weekend and had a great time! It wasn't very busy when we first showed up but it really got packed by the time we were waiting for our entrees. It's more spacious inside than the parking lot lends you to think it would be (I still to this day have no idea how cars navigate this parking lot situation). We got 5 rolls total- Chestnut Hill, Spicy Tuna, California, Philly and one more special with Asparagus and all we're incredible and spicier than we'd imagined but we loved it. Great to have this spot in the neighborhood

Jennifer B.

Yelp
We went to Hokka Hokka for the first time a week or so ago. The sushi was delicious and very fresh, and the service was excellent. We'll definitely go back!

Frank P.

Yelp
This is a wonderful neighborhood spot, very spacious seating and full bar. The sushi is fresh and excellent, bountiful ginger and wasabi. Size is just a bit on the small size, but prices are very fair. We both had miso soup and house salad (fresh avacado) perfect to share. Also like the Chestnut Hill roll, has some good spice and crunch. Worth a visit, you can usually get a seat because of its size. Never disappointed.

Yelp
I live fairly close to Hokka Hokka and each time I got I'm pleasantly surprised by something they've added to their menu. I'm an avid sushi lover, but am a bit particular as I am always on the lookout for fresh, cost friendly sushi. HH fits both of these criteria. The menu at HH is expansive, including many typical delicious foods: Sushi, speciality rolls, udon, teriyaki, etc. Their No Name roll is awesome. Spicy, fresh, and beautifully crafted. The hidden gem of HH is their speciality cocktail menu. They have a handful of carefully crafted delicious cocktails. I'm a fan of their saketini. It's delicious. The staff at HH is friendly, atmosphere nice, and (most importantly) they have great Happy Hour specials!

Taunto G.

Yelp
Tried for 1st time, after years of looking forward to it and never quite making it. Pleasant environment, attentive service and the food exceeded already high expectations... we're planning a return visit and not years away!

Yelp
We ordered takeout for about 5 diners last night. Food was good - several tasty rolls, a tofu veggie dish, dumplings for the kids. But, as happens EVERY TIME we place an order, items were missing. it doesn't seem to be a language issue, as the people answering & taking the order speak very good English. I only ordered one of the chef special rolls for my dinner, and it was missing. So I had to rely on others sharing their dinners with me. At least this time, we weren't charged for the missing items; most recently, they were included in the bill. The restaurant refunded that amount when we called, but still ... We do enjoy the food there, but the thought that we really need to open the bag & figure out if the order is complete before leaving the restaurant makes us think we need to find a new sushi joint. Sigh.

Yelp
The tuna tataki and King Kong roll were so delicious but all of the food we ate was fantastic.

Yelp
afternoon in the Winter times, Thursday during the holiday season. Rather busy (about 7 tables at one point) only one server. Post outside said they are hiring. No wonder. Food was alright. Sushi and Dragon Roll were okay but not special. The Spicy Seafood Udon was a surprise. More seafood that i expected. The highlight of the meal was the Avocado Tempura. I am not from the area, so can't compare it with other restaurants in the region. It was a good meal and I was satisfied. Faster servies certainly help. Food was ok.

Laren C.

Yelp
Had such a pleasant experience here. They have lots of vegetarian and vegan options, which means I'm not just stuck with a cucumber roll and miso soup. I actually did get miso soup, along with edamame, veggie spring rolls, and the Veggie Special roll (mango, avocado, cucumber). All the food was excellent. Excited to try their new vegetable fried soba noodles next time!

Yelp
Whenever my besties & I are in town at the same time, Hokka Hokka is our go-to spot to catch up! Last night was no exception. We started our evening with some wine (BYOB on Mondays, and some other nights as well, but you'd have to check on that) while we perused the menu. Not sure why we had to peruse, because we almost always order the same thing. SHUMAI: 5 steamed shrimp dumplings. There's nothing exceptional about them, and are exactly what you'd expect. HOUSE SALAD: Not your typical house/green salad. This salad is a huge portion, and a lot fancier than your typical iceberg salad with probably just a radish slice. A large bed of mixed greens, topped with cabbage, sliced tomatoes, spiralized carrots, and slices of perfectly ripe avocado on top, dressed in a really delicious miso dressing. Definitely worth a try! CRAB SALAD: A heaping pile of crab meat on a small bed of shaved cucumber, and again topped with avocado slices. The crab is ogod, but I personally would prefer if it had some sort of sauce to go with it (perhaps a spicy mayo!). We love being crabby though so this is always on our table. SPICY TUNA SUNDAE: A martini glass filled with avocado, tempura flakes, and spicy mayo, topped with raw tuna and roe. I always love this, however... I feel as if each time the portion gets smaller (while the price goes up!). SALMON AVOCADO ROLL: This is my go-to order at all sushi places. The salmon is always fresh here, but the roll was lacking avocado last night. There's not too much rice at all (which is a good thing in my opinion). KING KONG ROLL: This is my friend's absolute favorite. She never even opens a menu when here. This roll is on the bigger side and is filled with crabstick and cream cheese, then deep fried and topped with seared crab salad, spicy sauce, and ell sauce. She swears by it. LOBSTER ROLL: My other friend is the unpredictable one when it comes to ordering, and likes to try something different each time. She opted for the lobster roll this time. Another one of their larger rolls, filled with snow crab and avocado, wrapped in soybean paper, then deep fried and topped with lobster salad and sweet miso dressing. Can you tell we like #crab? She enjoyed her roll, but said it was nothing she was dying to get next time. In other news, the service can be unpredictable at Hokka Hokka. On some nights, requests are met immediately, and other nights it's hard to get a waiter's attention, or it takes FOREVER to get some extra spicy mayo, so prepare to be patient. Will I go back though? Absolutely. P.S. I don't care for their cosmopolitans.

Yelp
Delicious, very well prepared sushi rolls. My favorite is called World Series roll, and their spicy tuna is the favorite of all the spicy tuna rolls I have ever had--and I'm sayin' I've had some spicy tuna rolls in my day! Please support our local businesses as they recovery from the pandemic.

Yelp
We were excited to come here because its so close to where we live and my husband and I both love a good sushi dinner. I am sorry to say that I've very disappointed in this restaurant. Their service was very very slow. We came in on a Sunday night around dinner time. We were stood by the hostess table waiting to be seated for about 10 minutes. We saw the hostess passed us by several times, ignoring us every single time. Didn't even say something like "ill be with you guys in a bit". She actually made an effort to avoid looking at us so we won't ask for help. Meanwhile, she wasn't really particularly busy, chatting with co-workers, looking at her phone, etc. There were 2 tables still available when we came in. We had to wave her down so she can come and seat us. The place is relatively small (square-ish) restaurant so although its busy, there's really not that many people in there. We also had to wave our waiter to tell him that we have been sitting a while and we want to order. We were hungry so we placed all our orders at the same time (drinks, appetizers, and entree). Everything came in at a very very very slow pace. Our entree came in about 1.5 hours after we placed the order. We were there for more than 2 hours. Not because we want to, but because were just WAITING. The food was ok.. but after waiting hours for it.. it just wasn't worth it anymore. The white fish tuna wasn't that fresh (white tiger roll). Everything else tasted fresh. Service sucked. We won't be coming back.

Yelp
Found my new sushi spot in the neighborhood! I had a glass of plum wine, the rainbow roll, a spicy salmon roll, and a tekka maki roll. My bill came to $35 with the happy hour discount (not that bad for sushi, in my opinion). The fish was fresh and the rice was perfectly seasoned. The only reason I'm giving 4 stars is because the rolls were a little bit small for how much they cost. I didn't have any of the issues other customers seemed to have. When I went in, the restaurant was clean and bright. Wait staff were also really attentive. Super cute date spot! I will definitely be back-- Especially for happy hour: 5-7!

Yelp
I love Hokka Hokka's sushi, they get the flavours and combinations so right! The spicy tuna is great but the chestnut hill roll and the spicy crab roll are to die for. I've had sushi all over the world and this is some of the best. I will say however the portions just aren't quite filling enough. I hope they can work on increasing the portions in future - because then I'd eat here everyday.

Yelp
Talk about a disappointing dining experience. We recently dined at Hokka Hokka and we couldn't have been less impressed with the quality of service, cleanliness of the restaurant and professionalism of the staff. Our waiter that evening was less than attentive - at one point disappearing to the back room for 20 minutes to do god knows what. When our food arrived, items were missing and when we attempted to find our waiter . . . you guessed it, he had disappeared yet again. The quality of food was lackluster at best, especially given their price points and there are far better dining options in the Chestnut Hill area. After our meal, we informed management about the poor dining experience and their response was minimally apologetic and completely dissatisfying. Our recommendation? Don't waste your time or hard-earned money at an establishment which falls short on service, quality and professionalism.

Yelp
My fave sushi spot in the Philly area. The Sunday Morning roll is to die for. It's deep fried and absolutely amazing. Never had a roll like it anywhere else. The shumai is lovely and delicate, edamame always is perfect, love the avocado tempura. We've had some of the entrees and the salmon teriyaki is pretty good. Their special rolls never disappoint. Service can be iffy, but we've never had a miserable server. Nice bar menu and good desserts.

Yelp
Have been living nearby for more than two months, and finally stopped in for the first time tonight. Alas, the first time will probably be the last. A first thing: Beef Gyoza? Who does that? I am a huge gyoza fan, but am not a beef eater. Gyoza, in my experience, is almost always pork. [And, if you're trying to keep pork off the menu for those who do not so imbibe, why not chicken? Or veggie?] I ordered, or at least attempted to order, the Spicy Chicken Wraps, but was told they were out. So, I instead ordered the Grilled Scallops, which, per the menu, are, "Served over mixed greens with sesame dressing and teriyaki sauce." But, there was nary a mixed green in sight, though the scallops were served in some odd-tasting green sauce. I did not realize it at the time, but, in retrospect, I think I was brought the wrong dish. [There was a scallop dish of some sort on the specials menu; I think that is what I was brought. But, considering they brought my husband a glass of white wine when he ordered a Diet Coke, I guess this should not surprise me.] We also ate some miso soup, sushi (tempura shrimp and California rolls), and shumai. All were ok, but nothing outstanding. And, the food was not worth the price charged. [$10 for three pieces of the fore-mentioned scallops?] Service was not unfriendly, per se, but was a tad scattered and aloof. Glad(?) we gave our neighborhood Japanese place a try; sad it left much to be desired.

Yelp
Definitely cute, romantic and a warm date night vibe. I waited to come to this little spot before reviewing it. After my third trip I came to a conclusion. The quality of the maki rolls could be a lot fresher. The drinks at the bar are also made extremely lazy.. a college freshman could mix a martini the way the bar at Hokka Hokka does. Not worth your money. However, this place slides by with mediocre sushi by having dimmed lights, candles, and a very American staff. Drinks suck, Miso soup made with far too much water, Dumplings are usually a bit cold and the maki rolls... not too fresh.
google avatar

D K.

Yelp
HORRIBLE FOOD. I paid $18.00 for a bland, tasteless, unseasoned " teriyaki chicken". What I ended up getting was uncooked vegetables that came in a pair of twos, a ice cream scoop of unseasoned rice and a dry pathetic excuse of grilled chicken. I will never come here ever EVER again!!!!! They should be ashamed of what they have given to a customer! The only reason I gave 1 star is because the site won't allow me to give zero and because the hostess was nice.

Chuck A.

Yelp
Loved this sushi spot and I've eaten there several times and never disappointed with there sushi or tempura!! It's fantastic what they can do with raw seafood and wraps. Loved these guys!!

Yelp
Descriptive positive statements can't begin to describe the excellence of Hokka Hokka. Every visit to this spot ends with total satisfaction and delight. Decor: simple yet classy and tasteful. Food: authentic, fresh and well prepared. Their special rolls are incredible. The sushi chefs perfect their craft and provide innovative and tasty items that are always leaving me wishing I had one more piece when the meal has completed. I continue to go here time and time again because of their service, quality and attention to detail and consistent amazement at the skill and abilities of their team.
google avatar

Beata S.

Yelp
I wound not come here again. The portions of the sushi were really small compared to other sushi restaurants I been to. I feel like I overpaid for my dishes. They also lacked flavor. The shrimp tempura was missing that special tempura sauce that makes it pop.

Yelp
This review is long time coming... Hokka Hokka (HH)is a really good restaurant. I will comment on the sushi bar as this is where I always sit. When you first arrive at HH, there is a charming feel to it...like walking into an English cottage. As you enter HH, the vibe of cool Eastern washes over you. The colors, decor, music and vibe all come together well together. I like sitting at the sushi bar as the owner is the primary chef. He takes great pride in making very tasty and artistic presentations. I generally ask for modified menu items and he always delivers. For example: a white tiger roll with jalapeño mixed inside and topped with bonito. The fish here always is fresh and savory. You will be completely satisfied whether you order sashimi or nigiri. The sake sashimi and tako sashimi are my personal favorites. There is a full cocktail bar at HH. The bartender is talented and personable. The staff is always engaging and genuine. Parking is easy if you don't park in HH's very small lot.

Yelp
I went here with my family last night and enjoyed some good sushi and a delicious scallop appetizer! This is one of our go-to Japanese places for the fresh food, reasonable prices, and pleasant ambience. The aesthetic is a classy twist on casual, and makes for both a fun experience of going out to eat and a relaxing dinner. The house salad with a ginger dressing and avocado is a perfect, light and healthy-- yet flavorful-- way to start the meal. The miso soup is also very good. We usually go for the grilled scallop appetizer; the peanut sauce is great. The sushi is good too -- I'm not much of a seafood person, but my mom loves the Hollywood Roll and Spicy Love. The service is attentive, and the waitress was prompt and happy to answer questions about the menu.

Yelp
I am a Type 1 diabetic. I went in for Sushi and requested that they make the rolls without rice. Rice spikes my blood sugar and makes life awful. They just flat out would not do this. I asked why and they just said they don't do that. I explained that I am requesting for health reasons and they still said no. I have been at sushi places all over the country and have NEVER been denied this simple request. I had to embarrassily get up and leave. Hard enough living with this disease (I wish I could eat the rice) without cold and callous restaurants / and people doing stuff like this. Just awful.

Yelp
This place is truly great. Their food is remarkable quality, and a fair price. My only complaint is the service. Maybe it was a bad night, but it felt like the service was not nearly as quick as it should have been. I will definitely be going back! Very good place.

Yelp
Hokka Hokka is the most comfortable sushi spot I've ever eaten in. You feel at home. This is due to the beautiful decor and the big fire place they have going during the winter. More importantly, the food is delicious. Possibly my favorite roll of all time, The Chestnut Hill Roll, has become something that I often crave. It is a must try if you come in. Also, this may sound weird but I had the best edamame I ever had last time I was in. I don't know why, but it was just so soft and perfectly salted. For dessert, they also have the best fried ice cream I've ever eaten, and I've had my fair share. I think they put cinnamon in the batter or something, but it's amazing! My only issues are that the specialty sushi roll menu is a little small for my liking and for some reason my rice seems to fall off in excessive amounts when I dip it in soy sauce. Others I've dined with have not had these problem though. Maybe I'm just an aggressive dipper. Overall, place is great. I definitely recommend it!

Yelp
Hokka Hokka has some great sushi and sashimi. Everything is super fresh and delicious. My husband and I did our rehearsal dinner there in July and did a great job. We aren't from the area and found the restaurant on a whim. We loved it so much, we asked the manager if they could do a 20 party rehearsal dinner. They were very responsive to e-mail and phone calls. On the day of the rehearsal dinner, they did an amazing job. They had everything we had asked for and were able to accommodate a variety of dietary needs. We had such great service and everyone loved their food. A lot of friends offered cooked options as well and loved the food. The cocktails were also great. Overall: great food, great service and great drinks. A must go to place!

Yelp
If you're looking for sushi in Chestnut Hill, go to Osaka up the street. This place was BAD! I have two complaints. 1) Service We requested our sushi to be rolled in cucumber instead of rice. This is a pretty standard request. At first, we were told they didn't have the correct type of cucumber (really?). Then, we were told the person who typically cuts the cucumber is on vacation (again, really?). Finally, we were told they could do it, but they were going to pick the fish that was included in the roll. That's about the worst customer service I've ever received at a restaurant. 2) Quantity This place clearly cuts corners for profit. The amount of sashimi they give is almost laughable, as an example. Really wanted to like this place. If you're looking for sushi, go to Osaka up the street.
