The 11 Best Sushi Restaurants in Houston

"The vibes at Hokkaido in Chinatown are immaculate. The Tatami-mat lined space, bathed in yellow light, feels like slipping into someone’s imagined ideal of a sushi restaurant. Order everything, like combinations of reasonably-priced nigiri and sashimi and makimono rolls, at the counter. Soon after, a genuinely nice person working there will, somehow, miraculously deliver exactly what you ordered to you, no matter where you sit. How they accomplish this feat remains a mystery. Perhaps the last person to order is likely the least blissed out from the yellow light therapy? Come here for lunch or dinner, solo or with a friend or two, and split some inexpensive, well-made sushi and imagine your own reality." - chelsea thomas, gianni greene

The 21 Best Restaurants In Houston's Chinatown

"For a casual and quick sushi spot, the vibe at Hokkaido is incredibly soothing. Tucked into a shopping center corner, the Tatami-mat lined restaurant feels like a warm, golden light bath, but one where you can eat nigiri and slurp endless bowls of silky miso soup. Order everything at the counter and sit wherever you like. The cashier will somehow, miraculously, find you and correctly deliver all of your food. How they achieve this feat is a mystery. Perhaps the last person to order is likely the least blissed out from the yellow light therapy, or something. Embrace the unknown, and order some extra nigiri.  What to order: seaweed salad, sashimi and nigiri combo, dragon roll" - chelsea thomas, gianni greene

We’ve been coming to this little Japanese spot in Chinatown off Bellaire for almost 18 years now—basically since before we got married and had kids. The setup is simple: order at the counter, grab a table, and help yourself to water, utensils, and one of my favorite touches—the complimentary miso soup. They keep a pot out for everyone, and it’s always a nice way to start the meal. Prices are very fair and the value is excellent. Food here has always been consistently delicious. I’ll admit the sushi rolls aren’t always perfectly proportioned, but they never miss a beat flavor-wise. On our last visit we spent just under $50 for myself, my wife, and one of our sons. I had the shrimp tempura entrée with rice, while my wife and son enjoyed a mix of sushi. I don’t personally eat sushi, but judging by their smiles, it hit the spot. The only downside for me are the napkins—they’re those super thin ones that don’t really do the job. But that’s a small gripe in the big picture. Overall, this is one of those tried-and-true places that keeps us coming back again and again.

Quick in cheap sushi joint in Chinatown. This place is counter service where you get 5 percent off if you pay with cash. Had the beef bowl, Philly role , and 2 piece of salmon. There’s also free miso soup and a red bean dessert that’s free at the self service area.

Considering the price you pay, this place is a steal. Fish tastes fresh, never had any complaints about it. Table turn over is quick; folks are in and out within 20-30 minutes so you never need to wait too long. Fairly priced, and the food came out in under 10 minutes after ordering.

Food was good and service was fast considering the amount of people that were there. It was pretty packed, which is a given since it was a weekend and we went for dinner. I tried the salmon teriyaki with rice, as well as the crazy spider roll. The salmon teriyaki was delicious and the salmon was cooked to perfection. Light and airy, not over done. The crazy spider roll didn’t taste like it has what was supposed to be inside it. It was supposed to have soft shell crab but there was something crunchy in the roll and it tasted like slightly burnt shrimp tempura. I feel like they accidentally put the wrong meat inside. It wasn’t too bad I still ate it, but just not the right sushi I ordered seemingly, and tasted kinda burnt. The seasoning and sauce on the top was what I ordered, and it look like a crazy spider roll from the outside though. Just not the same ingredients on the inside as what was listed on the menu. Overall decent area, just make sure to check your roll to see if there’s no mixup when your order arrives.

Great sushi with very good pricing. The sushi here is very fresh and they are very quick. While the situation is a little different here with having to seat first them go up and ordering the food at the cashier. They do bring the food out very fast and they offer free miso soup when dining in. I will be looking forward to coming back here when in China town..

Sure! Here’s another version of a 5-star review for Hokkaido Bellaire: ⸻ Always a great experience at Hokkaido Bellaire! The staff here is incredibly friendly and welcoming—they truly make you feel like a valued guest. Service is fast, but never rushed, and the food is consistently delicious. The sushi is fresh, the portions are generous, and everything is beautifully plated. Whether dining in or taking out, this location delivers both quality and comfort every time. Highly recommend to anyone looking for solid Japanese cuisine with top- tier services.

My experience was great! As soon as we walked in a man enjoying his food could tell it was our first time and he came up to us and told us how things worked and that everything on the menu was amazing. Boy was he right?! The broth alone from every dish I could drink for days. 😂 It was so affordable for the quantity and the quality of food you get especially for Japanese cuisine. I will be frequenting this restaurant again!

Been going here for over 15+ years. The OG of pay at the counter and self serve sushi spot on Bellaire. Service and food have been consistent and tasty over the years. Hidden in the corner of the plaza. From nigiri, rolls, handrolls, udon, don bowls, it’s a good spot to grab a quick bite w variety of dishes to choose from. Free miso and bean dessert.
