The 11 Best Sushi Restaurants in Houston

"The vibes at Hokkaido in Chinatown are immaculate. The Tatami-mat lined space, bathed in yellow light, feels like slipping into someone’s imagined ideal of a sushi restaurant. Order everything, like combinations of reasonably-priced nigiri and sashimi and makimono rolls, at the counter. Soon after, a genuinely nice person working there will, somehow, miraculously deliver exactly what you ordered to you, no matter where you sit. How they accomplish this feat remains a mystery. Perhaps the last person to order is likely the least blissed out from the yellow light therapy? Come here for lunch or dinner, solo or with a friend or two, and split some inexpensive, well-made sushi and imagine your own reality." - chelsea thomas, gianni greene

The 21 Best Restaurants In Houston's Chinatown

"For a casual and quick sushi spot, the vibe at Hokkaido is incredibly soothing. Tucked into a shopping center corner, the Tatami-mat lined restaurant feels like a warm, golden light bath, but one where you can eat nigiri and slurp endless bowls of silky miso soup. Order everything at the counter and sit wherever you like. The cashier will somehow, miraculously, find you and correctly deliver all of your food. How they achieve this feat is a mystery. Perhaps the last person to order is likely the least blissed out from the yellow light therapy, or something. Embrace the unknown, and order some extra nigiri.  What to order: seaweed salad, sashimi and nigiri combo, dragon roll" - chelsea thomas, gianni greene

This just became my new favorite restaurant in Houston. Sushi and udon soup was amazing and a great price. Free self serve miso soup, red bean soup, and tea. All of the workers were extremely kind and the atmosphere was great. Decent amount of tables and plenty of parking. Can’t wait to come back!

Really good sushi, fresh, good yellowtail and rice is nicely cooked, the soy bean paper was good as well. I was impressed with the size of the sushi for the price got 4 rolls and 2 pieces, plus some chicken skewers that were tender in a ponzu sauce.

Have not been back to this restaurant for a while. All sushi and rolls are still really good. Self-serve water or hot water, miso soup, sweet red bean soup. Only thing need to pay attention is restroom, need to clean better.

We used to loved this place but no more when it started getting packed. They seem to be in a hurry and not as thorough as before. Service staff attitude is not attentive, the bowls, spoons and cups are dirty and have a few stalks of vegts stuck in them, and the food is not as fresh as before

Nice cozy little spot. Self serve Miso soup and hot tea bar. Great prices! Bento lunch plate was a steal! 3 rolls drinks and a lunch plate for under $40!

I think that most would not give a 5 star service to this because it's different. You order fist them they deliver it. After we ordered the food was there fast. I LOVE SUSHI. This place did not disappoint. We went with our family of five and even though not the ultimate place to take your kids wasn't bad. Would be a great place for a date.

I ordered the Nabeyaki udon, shrimp tempura, Una Ju, and seafood udon. The fried tempura was crunchy and warm while the udon was hot and filling with the veggies giving the udon broth more flavor.

We like to come here for sushi that doesn't break the bank. They have good quality for the price. You do get a little bit of a price break if you pay by cash. You order at the counter here and they usually have a line. It can go fast or slow depending upon the people ordering. The person taking the orders is usually pretty efficient but people don't seem to order quickly. They have a paper menu that you can check off the rolls you want and hand to them, but not everything on the menu is on the paper order form. I like the sashimi don bowls. They just changed the name of it but it is the same as before. All of the rolls are good. We also like the tempura. If you order the meal, it comes with rice and is a larger portion but you can order the appetizer version if you don't want as much. The price difference isn't too much so I usually order the meal. It is self serve water, tea, bowls, soup, and red bean dessert. Sometimes when it is very crowded, you may have to wait for clean cups or bowls. We like being able to self serve so it is not a problem for us. Taste wise - everything we have had tastes fresh and portion sizes are good. This is one of our favorite places to go for sushi.
