Hokkaisan Japanese Deli Sushi - Review - Downtown Austin - Austin - The Infatuation

"Serving as both a godsend forDowntownoffice workers and a destination for anyone craving green tea Kit Kats, Hokkaisan is a Japanese grocery store and deli offering a full range of pantry staples alongside hot and cold prepared bites. There’s a small seating area outside facing Congress Avenue, but this is mostly a grab-and-go operation. Sushi and bento boxes anchor the menu, with options ranging from California rolls and tuna nigiri to chicken teriyaki bowls and gyudon over rice. In terms of quality, the food falls somewhere between a casual neighborhood restaurant and what you’d get from the Sushi-Ya counter at H-E-B. But considering how sparse Downtown Austin is when it comes to relatively healthy, fastlunches, we’ll take it as a tiny victory." - Nicolai McCrary

Just left Hokkaisan Japanese Deli Sushi and I’m still smiling! If you’ve been to Japan and are missing it (like I’ve been since my trip a few months ago), this place is exactly the cure you need. I was very impressed by the variety of authentic Japanese cuisine. It’s clear they take pride in offering the real deal , not just the usual suspects, but a wonderful selection that transported me right back to the streets of Kyoto. And the staff is delightful. They were engaging, genuinely funny, and made the whole experience warm and welcoming. It’s that kind of service that turns a good snack into a memorable one. I went with the spicy tuna onigiri and WOW. Perfectly seasoned sticky rice and just the right amount of kick. It was absolutely delicious and hit the spot in every way. Whether you’re dealing with post-Japan withdrawal like me or just craving authentic Japanese food, Hokkaisan is a gem. I’ll definitely be back next weekend when I return to Austin for the ACL Festival. Highly recommend!

Was speed-walking down Congress with my brother to meet a friend when BAM...a brand new Japanese snack store stopped us in our tracks. I didn't have time to fully dive in, but let me just say: Austin desperately needs more spots like this. In LA, these kinds of shops are everywhere...quick sushi, Japanese snacks, quirky sodas, candies, even that glorious Kewpie mayo. It's basically a store passport of sorts...but make it snacks. Places like this matter. They give international students a taste of home, expand our food scene, and add real cultural depth to the city. In my opinion, Austin is at its best when it's diverse with options and this store checks all the boxes. So go, people. Buy the snacks. Support the store. I'm excited. Let's make Austin diverse and full of options and flavors.

Hokkaisan Japanese Deli Sushi is basically Godzilla stomping on every sad grocery store sushi tray in Austin. The rolls are restaurant quality, the prices are shockingly affordable, and the staff is so friendly you half expect them to run and open the door for you on your way out. The selection? Endless. It’s like Pokémon, but with sushi, you’ll want to catch ’em all. If you’re near 6th & Congress and don’t swing by, that’s not just a mistake, that’s a full blown character flaw.

I will always be happy to walk in when walking down congress. They have a variety a goodies and tasty drinks. Not to mention good deals on their sushi’s. We usually grab a couple things we haven’t tried and have yet to be disappointed. If you’re walking down congress come check it out. Thanks y’all!!

Google
Really fresh and reasonably priced sushi! Will definitely be back to try other things. And they have a good selection of snacks and drinks as well, plus a small section of beauty products.

This morning I was so lucky to have stumbled upon Hokkaisan, a new-to-the-area, uniquely quaint konbini! They have freshly prepared sushi ready to go, as well as some cooked dishes like chicken teriyaki. They also offer a delightful selection of Japanese snacks and beverages. I will definitely visiting time and time again! I ❤️ 🍣

Google
This place is so so good. A hidden gem truly. This isn’t your go sit down and be served restaurant (obviously). It’s a Japanese deli and the hot food and sushi is delicious. Highly recommend for a high quality quick bite. Way better than the fast food around. Much much much better than grocery store sushi.

My third time back in a week! Some fun Japanese snacks here. Sushi and onigiri is fresh and delicious. If you’re grabbing sushi for lunch here I recommend going around 11 am! This place is sooo popular at the 12pm lunch rush, sushi literally flies off of the shelves

Yelp
This bodega has it all! It's small but packs a punch with so many products. And though they carry a lot of great stuff, it's not too much, or overpacked, etc. Super clean store with great service. Can find lots of favorites here (see my pics from a couple weeks back) from candies and treats to drinks, sushi, mochi, ice cream, and more. It's one of my favorite stops when walking from my apartment into downtown. Really a fun shop to pick up things you love, need, or want. I can sum it all up with two words: Super Yum.

Yelp
I dropped by on Wednesday around 11:30 AM hoping to pick up a hot snack after hearing about this place through Instagram. I was really amazed with the variety of Kit Kats they served. Lots of Japanese ramen, noodles, chips, crackers, cookies, and candies. Lots of sake and a variety of beer for purchase, along with non-alcoholic drinks. You can get much of your cravings satisfied here. Grab a quick lunch from here. They have hot food like tonkatsu, dumplings, yakitori, bao bun, spam masubi, and much more. There's a variety of onigiri. They also have some fresh sushi selections, both sashimi and nigiri plus rolls. They even have sushi party trays that can be ordered in advance. I grabbed the six pcs nigiri sushi pack for $13.99. Nice cuts of yellowtail, tuna, and salmon. Felt this was worth the money. The eel and the spicy tuna onigiris were both really good, nice portion of meat per rice ratio. The spam and egg masubi was yummy! The chicken yakitori hit the spot to curb my hunger before we made it to our lunch reservation elsewhere. Parking can be challenging, as it's in the busy downtown area. Prices are reasonable and service is friendly. There are some standing countertops outside the store along with two sets of picnic tables and benches for a quick bite. Note that there is a line of people if you hit the lunch rush so plan ahead. Otherwise, expect to spend some time browsing for some cool snacks and drinks.

Yelp
This store has an amazing variety of Japanese products, from skincare to food and drinks. I was so excited to see a chef preparing fresh sushi right behind the counter, and I knew I had to try it. I got the Toro combo and was absolutely blown away by how incredibly fresh it tasted. It's hard to believe it came from a convenience store! Check out all the sushi options. It competes on value and taste especially for downtown Austin. I can't wait to come back and try all the other hot and cold food they offer.

Yelp
On a mission to find sushi that is grab and go but not from Heb or a restaurant we came across this little gem. We did have to pay to park and go on a lengthy walk to get to this place. If you are already on Congress or at the nearby theatres this is a great pitsop. We spent probably close to $80 grabbing sushi rolls and various ice creams. While we were choosing our rolls, more were being brought out so it was nice to see they refill often. It does get crowded in there and if you are lucky you may get one of the two tables out front. We walked many blocks away to a nearby park and ate our picnic. The counter guy was nice. If I am on a mission to look for specific Japanese chips & candy this is a great place to check if you are in the area.

Yelp
I think it's really important to have these diverse kind of shops around, especially downtown. It's really convenient, especially if there aren't really any Asian grocery stores around. But that being said, I kind expected more. It is a smaller shop, so I get why the there wasn't as big of a collection, but I feel like I would only really come here to quickly grab some snacks. Not really sure I would come back for the food. I tried the spicy salmon onigiri, and while the rice was good and seasoned really well, there was barely any filling. And the karaage was filling, but the batter was kind of thick and not crispy, so all of the chicken pieces were very chewy. I considered getting some of the nigiri/rolls but the fish kind of looked "fall apart-y" so I refrained. I know other reviews said the fish was good quality and fresh, but I didn't want to take any risks. Again, this is a great spot in terms of convenience, for the sake of diversity, and price isn't too bad. But I think I would always prefer hmart, 99 ranch, asahi imports more etc more.

Yelp
Downtown Austin has plenty of sushi restaurants but not an actual grab n go affordable sashimi sushi. I spent $55 on 4 rolls and to have to say it this very clean inside. Considering its location downtown, it's a great value and experience for the location. Yes the sashimi cuts could be thicker, yes the fish in the rolls could be thicker but to have it downtown, it's a great value. Plenty of Japanese snacks, Japanese Togo ramen, beer, liquor, Togo sushi rolls, sashimi, it's a nice change to Austin downtown. If this place was outside of downtown, I wouldn't be as thrilled because other places like hmart and 99 ranch sell better, cheaper, and more sashimi but this place can go head to head I would say with freshness. This place sashimi taste fresher than 99 or Hmart. I really like how the sushi rolls are smaller, enough rice, not too much rice, but just the right amount to be full yet fulfilling. I like how clean the sushi rolls taste, the rice is legit good sushi rice that can go one on one with any sushi restaurant.

Yelp
A new addition to downtown with an extensive selection of ready-made food, including nigiri, onigiri, kaarage, and more. There are Asian staples lining the shelves as well for a mini grocery haul. Overall, such a good value for fresh and delicious food.

Yelp
Be aware it's in downtown, where it's very very difficult (or in our case, impossible) to find a parking spot. Wasted time driving all the way here and then trying to find a spot, with holiday traffic, in the dark ... it can't be worth it.

Yelp
so excited to have this Japanese market with sushi and entrées to go. Pro tip - Stop in after 8 PM and the sushi is marked off 20%. Very fresh selection - they even had bluefin tuna. I did not try the entrées on this trip but definitely want to be back. I feel like I was transported to Tokyo. Very friendly and nice selection of other Japanese snacks and some toiletries.

Yelp
This place is amazing !!! Segoi desu! They are conveniently located right downtown and have lots of ready to eat options including sushi and chicken karage. They have skin products, frozen food, beer and sake and several candies and snacks as groceries! Staff was very friendly!

Yelp
I was so thrilled to discover a new deli/store opened near work, and even more excited to learn it's Japanese! So far I've made two trips for a light lunch, snacks and soju! I can't wait to try the bento boxes and other meals, and desserts. Friendly service paired with a simple yet airy ambiance makes this a must visit destination.

Yelp
It was Labor Day, and I tried calling twice to confirm they were open, but no one picked up. We decided to go anyway and arrived around 7:15 PM. The market is clean and has a nice variety of items, from Japanese drinks to ramen, fresh sushi, and onigiri. Prices are reasonable, and sushi is 20% off starting at 8 PM. Tamago ($5.16): Served as one large block instead of pre-sliced, which would have been more convenient. Still, it was fresh and one of the better tamago I've had so I'd get it again. Toro Combo ($22.99): The toro maki was just okay, but the toro nigiri was much better. Not sure if it's worth it though. Eel Avocado Roll ($7.59): Didn't try this myself, but my husband said it was okay. Jubes Nata De Coco Original ($2.59): The cashier mentioned it pairs well with soju. We'd never heard of that combo, so we gave it a try and it actually works! You learn something new every day :)

Yelp
This feels very authentic Japanese. It was quite busy when I visited on a Wednesday at lunch but the line went fast and there were still a lot of food options. The sushi is amazing. Parking is limited, as it is located in south congress downtown.

Yelp
Brand new Japanese market and store opened in downtown Austin. The sushi was very fresh and reasonably priced especially for out of town. They have an amazing variety of snacks and candy from Japan. Also, lots of cooking ingredients. I'm definitely coming back next to Memphis staying in downtown Austin.

Yelp
I think I have given 5 stars, four times ever? I reserve it for occasions like this. This place is incredible. Hot food. Sushi. Snacks. The authenticity. It's absolutely incredible. Absolute gem. I could eat here every day and be in heaven. Bonus review: they sell a curry sauce with vegetables in it. Amazing. I put it over some homemade rice and chicken.

Yelp
What a gem! I love a grab and go situation. They have fresh sushi (I tried the salmon combo sushi tray - so good) AND onigiri among other options. Lots of fun Japanese snacks. Definitely stop in if you find yourself strolling down Congress.

Yelp
This is the best Japanese grocery store I've seen in Austin. They have fresh sushi, onigiri, rice, and musubi options in addition to other lunch options. They even have the Japanese cheesecake that I love. This reminds me of the small Japanese grocery stores in NYC. I love that the tuna options include otoro and Chu toro that were so soft and melt in your mouth.

Yelp
This place is incredible. The sushi is EXTREMELY FRESH and ready to go. The staff is all extremely nice and service is excellent. They have a perfect variety of hot and cold stuff , and also really niche Japanese treats to choose from. The outdoor standing eating area is also a nice touch.

Yelp
Lucky to have this Japanese market in Austin!! Fish was incredible!! So fresh. I mean just look at the colors. So cool to see the Japanese candy variety in there as well but I didn't try because I really just went for the seafood - and I wasn't disappointed.
