7 New Can’t-Miss Restaurants in San Antonio

"Azuca Nuevo Latino chef and owner Rene Fernandez opened this lively tapas spot in Southtown not too far from the Riverwalk. The small plates range from crispy calamari to fresh ceviche to juicy jamón iberico. There are indoor and outdoor dine-in services." - Ben Gonzalez

Google
Great dinner out with the family! We loved everything about this place: delicious food, attentive service, and great wine. Our server helped guide our choices of tapas, and helped us figure out what our picky kids would like best. We enjoyed a lovely Spanish Tempranillo with our meal, and the desserts were top notch! There is also beautiful artwork on the walls by local artists that is available for purchase, which was lovely to look at while we enjoyed our meal. We will definitely be back the next time we are in San Antonio!

Google
It’s definitely one of the best restaurants that I have been to in San Antonio. Food and service are top notch. Our server gave us great food suggestion. Will definitely be back next time when we visit!

Google
We were just gonna try something close to our hotel, but had a really good experience here. Our server was very attentive, the food was good (and based on my limited experience at Spain, quite authentic). Would recommend here if you are looking for good paella 🥘

Google
Phenomenal food, great music playing on the speaks, and gorgeous atmosphere. Marcos was an exceptional server! Such a great attitude and energy! We are in San Antonio for a short trip and will 100% be back. Moorish lamb is one of the best dishes I have had in my life. HIGHLY recommend!!!

Google
Looked for something that would make our taste buds happy, we found it. Tried multiple tapas. Everything was wonderful. A very nice surprise. Wine was fantastic! Sangria was refreshing and delicious. Service was great. The tapas came out quickly which was great because the delicious smell of garlic will make you crazy. This is a great spot, we will definitely be back!

Google
We recently dined at this restaurant as a group of four, and while the menu clearly states that a 20% gratuity is added only for parties of six or more, they still added this charge to our bill without any explanation. We were speaking in our native language during the meal, and it felt like the server assumed we wouldn’t notice or question this because we seemed like tourists. If I hadn’t specifically asked whether the tip was already included, they would have let me double-tip without a word. This felt less like a simple mistake and more like they were trying to take advantage of us, which left us feeling singled out and unwelcome. We don’t mind tipping well, but being unfairly charged just because we look or sound like tourists is disappointing and disrespectful. If you’re visiting, check your bill carefully and don’t let them take advantage of you.

Google
I was at a convention and one of a light dinner so I found this place. Let me tell you it was superb! The service was extraordinary and the quality of the food was phenomenal. If you’re looking for a nice dive to have a glass of wine or a beer after work or just hang out, I highly recommend coming here.

Google
Second visit here and both times the food was really well done. They know when to keep a great dish simple and when to add flavor. Comfortable authentic atmosphere with a good beer and wine selection. Staff has always been very friendly and food came out very quick.

Chef Rene's expertise shines through in the innovative and beautifully presented tapas, blending traditional ingredients with a modern twist. The vibrant setting and exceptional cuisine make dining here more than just a meal; it's a celebration of Spanish flavors. Hola! Restaurant is a must-visit for an unforgettable culinary journey.

Yelp
We came on a Friday night, ordered the Pulpo, Paella, Cauliflower, and Escargot. As stated, they serve tapas size and price reflected so. Service (2/5): Polite but pretty slow and low attention for a 1/4 filled restaurant on weekends. Had to walk over to ask for water refills and next dish. They do close at 10pm not 11pm as Google/Yelp has, so at 9:45 the music stopped and we clarified closing time. Food (2/5): Nothing was spectacular- except for the amount of seafood in the paella. The overly tenderness of the pulpo octopus felt it was not fresh like the ones from Spanish restaurants, but came with patatas that were crispy and nice vinaigrette. The paella was the best out of all- hot, great portion of seafood while little rice; but we've had better as it was lacking some sort of spice, had a lot of rocky/sandy bites, and very soupy. The cauliflower was ok, sauce was salty, not worth $7 maybe $4. We enjoyed the escargot which was tender with zesty sauce; it comes mixed not French style FYI. Overall, not reflective of the reviews with big rooms to improve. If the service, quality, AND quantity lives up to the price it's be perfect.

Yelp
One of our top restaurants in San Antonio We were in the hunt for tapas after traveling to Spain and stumbled upon Hola after it had recently opened. We've kept coming ever since and always end up ordering about 6 things each time we come. With our tried and true always making the cut- those being patas bravas and the pinchos de carne. Though we did recently try the empanadas and they were delicious! After ordering 6 dishes and splitting it between 2 we are always shocked to see how reasonably priced the bill is after (~$50 more or less).

Yelp
My boyfriend surprised me with dinner at Hola for our first anniversary. We absolutely loved everything from the ambiance of the eclectic chairs, plates, and art, and most of all the food! We love Tapas and this is our favorite in San Antonio!

Yelp
Have been here twice already. This place is just a gem!! I love tapas, you can order several small plates and get different flavors, and still get full. The first time I went alone over the summer and it was delish! I went back over the holidays and it was great! . Their Papas con chorizo (patatas a la brava? can't remember the name!) are to die for. I'd probably order like 4 plates and have that for dinner alone!! But, they have other such tasty dishes too! The squid Ink rice was delicious also! They have an amazing selection of wines for those interested in. Every one of their dishes comes out consistent, with attention to presentation, and just so flavorful!! Def takes you on an international trip via their cuisine. Service is friendly and attentive, and they also give you room to chat, not rushing you out the door, which is a huge plus in my book! Their ambiance lends itself to great conversations and great food. I can't wait to go back!!!

Yelp
It seemed like a slow night at Hola; not too busy for a Friday night. We stuck to small plates and tried six different dishes. Everything was served promptly and tasted perfect. The portions are fair for tapas and the prices are great compared to other Tapas places. We'll be back!

Yelp
Hola! is an international Tapas restaurant located in San Antonio, TX. Restaurant has a decent selection of meats, seafood and vegetables and offers beer and wine alcohol choices only. It has both an indoor seating and a very large wrap around patio outside. Restaurant has somewhat of a cafeteria feel to it. We came in around 8PM for dinner on Thursday night and after looking around where told by bus staff who was cleaning tables we can sit anywhere. We sat outside for about 15 minutes during which I had to get my own menus from the inside of the restaurant which was barely at quarter capacity. There was no sign of wait staff here. No water, no hello, no menu. Finally a wait staff greeted us and mentioned she will be back. The same bus staff appeared 5 minutes later with water for us. We asked if they have time to serve us. She apologized and assured us food comes out fast. The server then appeared at with no apologies for lateness asked what we wanted to order. We double checked if the food will actually come out soon to which she replied that kitchen is backed up and we should expect at least 30 minutes. We left as clearly Hola! was a disorganized, disappointing, uncoordinated experience and not worth spending money on establishment with low values and terrible customer service. No comment on food since we didn't have any, but I will end it with: "How you do Something you do Everything..." for your consideration. Food: N/A Vibe: 2 stars Service: 1 stars Tips: Get in and proceed to take any table Don't expect to be greeted Get your own menu at the far end of hallway past the bar Expect to wait for over 15 mins for wait staff No comment on food Street parking

Yelp
5 stars! I don't know how this place isn't being talked about more in SA. The food is beyond amazing, I can't even describe the flavors. Literally everything our group ordered from the scallops, escargots, baked cheese, mushrooms, tuna, potatoes, paella etc was exquisite. The wine is great and the service was super attentive. I can't say enough great things about this restaurant. Keep it up hola!
google avatar

Yana M.

Yelp
We loved the cauliflower and asparagus tapas, as well as the squid over black rice. The locally brewed beer on tap made a good thing even better!

Yelp
We recently dined at Hola, and while we were so impressed by the food, the service was pretty disappointing. We had to wait to be seated because the server and the hostess were both fighting with each other (not clear about what since I do not speak Spanish LOL. Ugh I wish I knew. It seemed like something juicy was going on). Anyway, we should have walked out then, but we decided to stay and give them a try. The waitress took a while to take our order, and when the food arrived, our water wasn't refilled until we explicitly had to flag her down! The restaurant itself is pretty small, but decorated in a quaint fashion. Plenty of outdoor seating, but inside is a bit tricky. I would not recommend large groups here.

Craig S.

Yelp
You won't find more tasty Tapas in San Antonio. The service was great! We ordered Bay Scallops, Escargot, Calamari, and the Rum Glazed Pork Belly. All of them were AMAZING! Not the best ambiance, but the best places always seem to start with what they can afford. Highly recommend this little gem!
google avatar

Yelp
Came in on a Saturday around 830 pm, there were people inside but had ample seating available outside (they have umbrellas and mist fans too) We parked at the Hemisfair garage and this is walking distance from Yanaguana Garden Had our 21 month old with us, he enjoyed the chicken bites and meatballs! My husband and brother loved the lamb and the kick of spiciness in it The calamari is not your typical deep fried one, but the squid ink rice with it was good combo! The hostess/server was nice and helpful! Dont expect big servings because they are mainly focus on tapas so dont come hungry! Will come back in the future!

Yelp
I very much enjoyed every dish I had at this restaurant. I love the idea of tapas. I love the idea of sharing my food with others so I can get to taste more. The sangria was amazing. I definitely love sangria that's not too sweet. We shared: baked cheese: this was so good. It had a hint of sweetness to it. I would have enjoyed more bread to dip with. Otherwise, I would highly recommend. Patatas Bravas: these were my least favorite. Good, but would have liked a stronger flavor. It does come with pieces of sausage. Charred cauliflower: very good. Comes with parmesan Mayo. You really don't need the Mayo. It has a good taste in its own. pinchos de carne: tender. Good flavor. Bay scallops: so this dish is pieces of scallop in a cheese sauce. It loved it. It had good flavor. It could be shared with one person, but if more than two in your party, get more than one. We shared all this between two of us. We thought it was enough food. They don't have parking, but there's street parking and a paid parking lot adjacent to the restaurant. You can make reservations. They have inside and outside seating. The waiter was super nice and gave great recommendations.

Yelp
While I wanted to just say "what are you waiting for" I fugured Id leave a little more. If you are looking for reasonably priced food with amazing quality look no further. They specialize in tapas, smaller plates and i would say 2-3 choices per person is the right amount My order was the baked cheese, escargot, and lamb. Any order that doesn't include the baked cheese is just wrong. In addition, all the employees are super nice and work really hard If Michelin inspectors ever make it to San Antonio they need to check this place out. PS: What are you waiting for.

Yelp
Saw the other great reviews about this place and had to see what it was about! The weather was amazing, so we sat outside and it was really lovely to watch the sunset with the tower in the background. There is a decent amount of seating outside, a communal table and stand alone tables. The favorites for us were the poke, baked goat cheese, and lamb. I love tapas as a concept, it's great to try a little of everything and be satisfied and not extremely full and needing to be carried out on a stretcher! That being said, the tapas portions were still a pretty good size. I forget the name of the one Tempranillo they have on the menu, but it was awesome and I highly recommend it for a true experience Service was casual but good, and our server even offered to take several photos of us! All in all, loved the experience dining here and can't wait to come back.

Yelp
Went to this establishment for a dinner date with my wife. Absolutely incredible food and a great drink selection. Have been here twice and will absolutely be back more in the future. If you're looking for a tremendous tapas experience, San Antonio this is this place to visit. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
3.5 Small plates that individually appear affordable, but it just didn't hit the mark for me. You know when you can't put your finger on it, but you don't feel like the experience matched the price tag? We spent $60 for a moderate amount of food for 2 people without alcohol. A few tables inside and a nice patio that has some ambience music playing. One thing I liked- kitchen is in there cooking meats to order. Menu has many fun things to try in small portions. If you like tapas, come check it out for yourself to decide.

Yelp
This place was surprisingly delicious and fun! Made me feel like we were on vacation even though we had just come back from one. We went on a pretty busy Saturday night. I had been eyeing this place for awhile now and finally had the chance to come try it. We received outstanding service and delicious food and sangria. We tried a few of the tapas, all were amazing and fun to try while sipping some sangria on a nice Saturday evening. My favorite was the baked cheese. It was soo good we were dipping everything else in there. Cant wait to come back and try more items!
google avatar

Stephanie S.

Yelp
The food was delicious and very well priced. We shared 4 tapas, I highly recommend the chicken bites, sirloin, and meatball. The flavors were on point. The staff was very nice.

Yelp
Love this spot! A nice breathe of fresh air at the entrance to Southtown. We were seated promptly on a Friday night. Beer and Wine on tap and bottle. Hola is definitely a nice addition to Southtown. It's the best tapas selection in town. If you're looking to start your night downtown, start here. Nice portions and all food is prepared fresh! I was pleasantly surprised of the beet salad. I'll only eat beet again when I'm visiting Hola! Lastly, shoutout to the owner as he recognized my Morrissey shirt and played some nice Moz tunes during our stay. After we closed out our tab the Moz tunes kept coming so we opted to have a couple of beers before we said our goodbyes. Moderately priced! $$$ Exceptional service!

Yelp
So good. Every single items was beyond our expectations. Service was amazing and very personal. Will be coming back soon!

Yelp
I recently dined at Holas and was impressed. The paella was savory with a blend blend of spices and perfectly cooked seafood. It's clear they pay attention to traditional flavors and techniques. That saffron yo! Worth the price of admission Their hummus (magenta colored) was a standout, with a creamy texture that paired nicely with their house-made pita-ish bread crackers. It's a simple dish, but at Holas it's elevated. I also had the tuna tartar, and it was evident that there was a great deal of care put into both the flavor and the presentation of the dish. Think tuna and honey mustardy flavor, so good. Also their house-made sangria. It was refreshing and fruity, an ideal match for getting a light buzz while traipsing around SA I'd say Holas is definitely worth a return visit. Side note: They have the coolest restrooms, go and find out for yourselves. By the time I remembered to take photos it was too late

Yelp
Food was amazing!!! Staff super friendly! Atmosphere with local art was vibrant and warm. Go here!

Yelp
My daughter and I spent two days driving from Milwaukee to San Antonio and were starving. We saw this cute little place and stopped in. So glad we did! First off, Antonio was amazing. He was kind and courteous and gave my daughter some tips as he's a long-time resident of San Antonio and she's just moved here. We shared the flatbread (simply amazing) and the strip loin entree (also fantastic). It was the perfect serving for us. We also shared a carafe of Sangria and the Merengue for desert. Everything was delicious and a decent prize. Will definitely go back when in town again. My daughter said she'll be a regular! Highly recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
We stumbled acre Hola! After a meal downtown. This is such a neat place that certainly welcomes you to the Southtown area of San Antonio. It is warm inside at the bar but other sections are cool and the outdoor patio will definitely be a great place to spend evenings once the heat leaves us! I will say that the proximity of this location will be a great vantage point for fireworks at the Hemisfair.

Yelp
So we picked this place as we're looking for tapas for a birthday party for 76yr old mom who wanted to try a bunch of foods. Menu looked good and location was convenient. From the outside of the building, didn't look like much different than a usual Mexican restaurant. Inside decor was cool and groovy with custom paintings and a wall of wine box lids. Very chic! Then came the food and drinks and oh my so delightful. First, splurge and get the pitcher of sangria. For 5 people everyone had 2-3 glasses each and was so worth the price. Tasty and delicious. We ordered a bunch of plates and nothing was bad, octopus A+, escargot fantastic, beet and spinach hummus excellent, and way too many fabulous dishes to list. Highly recommend this place. The service and food were both outstanding. Don't be fooled thinking you will get average Mexican food, but will rejoice in Dishes with flair and incredible taste.
google avatar

Elizabeth A.

Yelp
Keep in mind it's a tapas restaurant, so small portions on all the plates. We had them all, calamari, cheese board, papas, cauliflower, pork, mushrooms and more! But my favorite was the calamari in a bed of black rice and my least favorite was the pork in a bed of couscous. I found the entrees a little extra oily the place it's small but comfortable. Management was not welcoming even though we had an confirm reservation, he could not find in his system. Service was good and knowledge. A nice list of wines and draft sangrias were available. Overall it worth visiting for a glass of wine and an appetizer.
google avatar

Roxy B.

Yelp
We were headed to the restaurant down the street but it was closed. Good thing, bc Hola was great! Three people shared a bottle of rose, I had a beer and we shared a variety of tapas. It was all out of this world! The steak was delicious, roasted cauliflower, and beet salad were awesome. I was just a little put off by the host as he was kinda persuading us to go elsewhere (we were headed to a RHCP concert so maybe he thought we just wanted to get wasted). But! My friend forgot her credit card and he came running half a block to return it! Thank you!!

Sarah Amanda H.

Yelp
Made a reservation for a friends bday here. None of us had tried this place yet but we're interested in trying it out. The food was good and well priced. Although the service was a bit slow we did like our server. Just seemed they were short staffed so that's understandable. What did upset me about this place was that we made a reservation for 4 people and 1 high chair for our baby. On the phone they did say they had literally only 1 high chair but said they would hold it for our reservation. We didn't ask for them to hold it they said they would for us so we really appreciated that. We got there and the table was not even ready but what was upsetting was seeing that they in fact gave that only high chair to another party. And that other baby was MIA for the first 20 mins of us being there so it was just empty at that other parties table. We ended up leaving after that first round of food and drinks. Since I'm a stay at home mom I was looking forward to having an enjoyable evening with my family and friends but we had to hold our baby the whole time struggling to feed baby and ourselves. So with all that they should probably invest in a few more high chairs and hire more staff for first Friday.
google avatar

R S.

Yelp
The Paella was AMAZING! Was attending a private party and the outdoor patio and ambiance was a cool vibe. Their Sangria was good and will have to come again to try their menu items.

Tom D.

Yelp
I liked everything about this place--the setting, the service, the menu, the art--with the caveat that several of the tapas we ordered were extremely salty. Maybe I should have ordered smarter.
google avatar

Kevin H.

Yelp
Very limited menu and almost no options for young, picky children. It took longer than expected to get food and it was average. With so many other options in the area, I'd look elsewhere.

Rob H.

Yelp
The food and the service were great. The server was friendly and exuberant. He spent time with all of his tables at it was well received by everyone. Nice variety of tapas which were served promptly. My only suggestion would be to add a Spanish white like an Albariño to the menu. This was a great find.
google avatar

Mario E.

Yelp
A-MAZING! Let me tell you, this place is so good, I mean so good. I've been three times since they've opened. Maybe one of the first few customers when they first opened. Their food is delicious, and great amount to share with others. Only suggestion I recommend, ask for more sauce for the meatballs and more peanut sauce for the chicken steaks. The employees are always working hard and to keep things accurate, the manager or owners I've met 2x's are exquisite gentleman who are there to please. The venue is always so clean, and the food comes out fairly a good decent time, enough time to enjoy a drink before it comes out. Def check this place out.
google avatar

Renee J.

Yelp
This a a cute little tapas and wine place in Southtown that we happened upon after a dinner out. We stopped in to see what it was about for a drink. Although we were full, we couldn't help but try a few small bites because the aromas and the activity at the grill drew us in. We tried a few small desserts that were divine. I also tried an oyster which was so good! They said their octopus is a specialty which makes sense since the bar has an octopus carved into it. The cooks are right there in the open kitchen making the process look like a choreographed art. The drinks were good as well.. I will definitely be back when I have an appetite to try more from the extensive menu.

Justin R.

Yelp
Ambiance, service and food were all amazing. The patatas bravas, mushrooms, scallops, calamari, beef meatballs and empanadas were all perfect. And do the merengue for desert.
google avatar

M P.

Yelp
Delicious food! Great service! Relaxing ambiance! I travel for business and this place is a unique gem. Reasonable prices and portion sizes. Great music selection. The flavors are very good. Highly recommended.

George W.

Yelp
Excellent place. Amazing food , lots of variety on the menu. Would recommend the scallops and the pork belly but everything was very good. Would recommend sitting in the dining room as it is cooler in there but really amazing food and great ambience for a good price. Got 8 small plates for 65 dollars. Will be going back regularly.

Sophia W.

Yelp
Best tapas place I've ever been to in Texas! Food, drinks and ambiance were on point.
google avatar

Scott B.

Yelp
have never been to a place with less concern for the customer. stood at the door with emplayers walking by for 10 minutes - no eye contact, no 'would you like a table', not even 1 word. looked like it had promise - but we won't spend money at a place that cant run a solid customer service focused business. would suggest you look elsewhere for Tapas in SA,
google avatar

Chad B.

Yelp
A MUST VISIT! This place is OUT OF THIS WORLD! Literally a celebration of the most flavorful small dishes I've ever had! And at an extremely affordable price point! The weight staff and management were extremely personable and so friendly. Will come back again and with friends next time!
google avatar

Mark B.

Yelp
Outstanding small plates with great presentation and fantastic taste. The place is small but nice and service was amazing. Sat near the open kitchen area watching the chef do their magic. We did not have a disappointing dish. We will be back.

L L.

Yelp
Visiting from out of town, we went here for the first time not knowing what to expect. It turned out to be a delightful visit. Great venue and vibe, excellent service, terrific food! Everything we ordered had fabulous taste.
google avatar

Levi S.

Yelp
Small family run feels with amazing service (thank you William) and equally amazing food! Small plates, an amazing starter to your evening, highly recommend.
google avatar

Teresa S.

Yelp
Authentic experience! My husband and I were wanting to recreate our honeymoon to Spain and decided to give Hola! a try. We were so pleased with our experience. We ordered the calamari, charred octopus, and cauliflower with sangria. We found the portions to be enough, pricing fair, and flavors incredible! We also loved the atmosphere - the inside brings the charm of the old world, the patio allows you to enjoy the beauty of downtown SA. They are in the process of expanding their menu as well as adding spaces for artwork and music. Highly recommend and will return!
google avatar

Dan T.

Yelp
Awesome flavors. Baked cheese, charred octopus and scallops. Plenty of bread to soak up the amazingness. Can't wait to try more!!!

Yelp
What a wonderful place to go The food and service was outstanding, I try 5 of his tapas and all delicious, can wait to get back and try more, thank you Tony y for you great services
google avatar

Greyson B.

Yelp
Super solid in Southtown. Tapas are super yummy with awesomely reasonable prices. Wine list is solid too. Inside is narrow by the bar but super cool with its open kitchen. Dining room looked pretty sweet too. All in all, an awesome place to get some small bites and some wine!

Denise L.

Yelp
Went here on the recommendation of a friend when we were visiting San Antonio. We were looking for something away from the bustle of the riverwalk and this was only a ten minute walk from our hotel. Upon entering the restaurant we were greeted by the most amazing aromas and friendly staff. We decided to go with multiple small plates and we were not disappointed!! At the recommendation of our waiter we tried the Setas Al Ajillo, rum glazed pork belly on basil cous cous, Pinchos de Carne, crab cake and calamari. We had a hard time picking a favorite! Then for dessert we had the chocolate truffles and bread pudding. Outstanding!! Can't say enough about the flavors and the service.
