PROS
(1) Kids under 11 eat for "free."
This is a nice perk! The portion sizes were good and the food looked appealing. *Note* kids meals are only free with the purchase of an adult entrée. Children meals otherwise cost the same as adult meals, ranging from $15-$30+.
(2) Close proximity to Disney Springs.
Disney Springs was a convenient 10-minute walk from the hotel. DS offers shopping, entertainment and dining options.
(3) Free shuttle service to Disney World parks.
This is the only shuttle they offer. While it is a nice gesture, be prepared for some extra travel time as the shuttle stops at two other hotels and parks along the way. Per the shuttle routes, Holiday Inn is the first to be picked up and the last to be dropped off.
(4) Friendly & helpful staff.
It was really nice to feel like most of the staff genuinely wanted us to enjoy our stay. Some even went out of their way to be helpful without it be requested. For example, one of the bartenders brought pool towels to the table for my family because he saw the pool towel shelf was empty and that I'd already asked the front desk for some.
There were two occasions the front desk gave us the wrong or contradictory information that caused some frustration.
(5) The pool area was large & well maintained.
The pool area offers a nice space to relax and cool down. The far end of the pool is where most of the little/younger kids spent their time because it has a gradual and shallow slope into the pool (versus stairs). It also had a little splash fountain.
(6) Comfy beds & cribs offered.
The beds were VERY comfortable and they even offered a crib for our infant.
(7) Convenience items available for purchase.
Next to the bar was a little shop for quick "to-go" food & drink items, like granola bars, chips, cookies, etc. There was also a dispensing machine where you could purchase miscellaneous products like shampoo or laundry detergent, etc., at normal costs.
CONS
(1) Timeshare offer concealed as a "gift" upon arrival.
This actually upset me quite a bit because we were SO HAPPY to have finally reached our destination and have some fun...after checking in, a hotel representative sitting at a booth to the right of the lobby invited us over, "Hey, guys, so excited to have you here. We give gifts out to all our guests and I wanted to take a minute to share your gift with you."
Come to find out, our "gift" was an offer that included a rebate and roughly $130 off ticket costs in exchange for a timeshare tour. I attempted to halt the conversation as soon as I realized this and, to no surprise, the representative still attempted to pressure us into the tour. I managed to get away by sharing that I'd rather tear my eyeballs out than consider timeshare/tour.
(2) Coffee
I really need a good cup of coffee in the morning. This hotel offers complimentary coffee, which is another nice gesture. However, there was only have one creamer available and even with several pumps of it, the coffee never lightened that much and was pretty tough to drink.
(3) Inconvenient distance from general stores, restaurants & international drive.
We noticed other nearby hotels [that we passed while taking the shuttle] were attached to plazas with convenience stores and dining options. For a family like ours with two adults and two toddlers, it would have been nice to have these amenities at an arm's reach. There is only one restaurant on-site at the hotel, and the menu is good but limited. Ordering food delivery is also priced higher. There were a few occasions it would have been too chaotic logistically to walk to Disney Springs.
(4) Lack of child-friendly activities.
While the hotel has a pool, table tennis, a cornhole game and a mini hopscotch painted to the lobby floor, it lacked any additional child-friendly amenities. It would have been nice to have a small playground area either at the hotel or nearby. It could have made a big difference in keeping our two littles entertained.
(5) Lack of transportation options for families with car seats.
If you need transportation and require two car seats like we did, rideshare apps like Uber or Lyft are not an option. They only allow one car seat per vehicle and the costs for specialized rides can be astronomical. The hotel has one transportation service they recommend, owned by a gentleman named Hector. Hector was very friendly, prompt and accommodating, but transportation costs throughout our trip added up quickly. We took a shuttle from/to the airport, to/from Universal Studios, and to Animal Kingdom. It would have been more cost effective for us to rent a car and pay the $20ish/night parking fee. It also would've given us more freedom to explore International Drive, which was recommended by several locals.
(6) Plumbing issues.
The sink in our bathroom didn't drain well and the chain in the toilet kept falling off, preventing us from being able to flush the toilet properly.
