I just returned from the Holiday Market Thanksgiving pickup at the Main St location. I ordered a whole fresh turkey, just like I did last year. Last year I went inside the store and picked up a beautiful whole fresh turkey in its sealed wrapper, with the total weight given, the label giving a price per pound and showing a Bell Evans logo. I paid at the register by the pound. This time, I was given a fresh turkey removed from its sealed wrapper, seasoned and placed in a dented aluminum pan with some limp onions and celery floating around the bottom in raw juice. The popup timer was inserted near the neck, and all giblets removed. This pan was inserted into a large clear plastic bag, knotted on top and placed in a box. There was no indication of the source, or the actual weight. The Holiday online catering site gave a price of $95.00 for a weight range between 10-12 lbs. Last year, I used a credit card to pre-order the same weight range, but the whole bird was sealed and weighed at the meat counter. This year my credit card was charged for the full amount, days before pickup. Given the rising costs of poultry, I would prefer to pay by the pound, get the entire bird with giblets and left in the sealed wrapper, without anyone presuming to dress it, let alone place it in a pan with raw vegetables swimming in raw juices.
I understand there has been a change in ownership of Holiday Market. I appreciate the staff there, they are friendly, helpful and this incident has nothing to do with them. It is this online ordering system, now selling expensive mystery meat and charging in advance regardless of weight, that appears to have been overhauled. In my experience today, it is NOT an improvement, and will likely be my last time using Holiday Market catering.
