Three things I love about starting my day at this coffee shop; 1) it’s close to our office and super convenient, 2) coffee is good, made excellently by the baristas. 3) Callie, has an incredibly inspiring joy about her that can literally make anyone want to start their day here. While the interaction is brief (long enough to make the coffee), she smiles, makes you feel happy and she makes a feel appreciated. To me this is a sign of good ownership (local) and must be a great place to work.

My favorite coffee shop in Portland <3. I used to go here every day for years when I went to school/worked in the area, though I unfortunately can't go as much anymore since I have moved and got a new job. The staff is friendly, the coffee is great, and the atmosphere is calm. I love that they have seasonal homemade syrups and even served coffee in cute Christmas mugs during the holidays, which really cheered me up. I miss Holly Rose <3

A hidden gem tucked away in the Hollywood library building. I stopped by one morning and had one of the best lattes I had recently. I just can't put it down—well, maybe it was because it's served in a real ceramic coffee mug. In any case, I really enjoyed it and the latte art stayed all the way till I finished the drink, a little happiness that made my day. Service was very friendly and the whole vibe here feels just right.

Came late in the day so most treats were sold out. Me and my family got the raspberry scone, key lime danish and the oatmeal raisin cookie. All were very mediocre, they’re probably better fresh? Definitely not my favorite though. The drinks were very pretty, but also on the more bitter side (if you like your mochas sweet you should probably ask for more sweetener). Good foam which is my favorite! The barista was the only worker but he was very nice.

I did’t have any food or pastries during my visit, I only stopped by since I was visiting the neighborhood and needed a pit stop before heading home. I’m glad I did! Music choice really set the vibe, plenty of seating and cool patterns all around. Super awesome atmosphere and service. I ordered a Cubano, which the sweet barista accommodated me with. Sometimes I’ve been denied since the brown sugar can “harm” machines. But their expertise and care for quality excelled. Beyond even my own order. The shop is right next to a library- heavy foot traffic indeed! Lots of parents and children… but in and out they went!! QUICK SERVICE! I’ll be returning!

Great place to grab a cup of coffee, or hang around and catch up with friends! I got the chai and it was delicious. The coffeeshop is also right next to the library, so grab a cup of coffee while you visit the library!

Holly Rose easily jumped into my top 5 Portland coffee shops. Intimate space with seating. Street parking. Experienced baristas. My latte was so good that I didn't have time to take a picture. Enjoy.

Much better experience this time around . The rose flavored cappuccino tasted fantastic and the ocean roll was pretty nice and fragrant . They did close earlier which was uncomfortable because they let me know that right after they handed me my beverage . I felt rushed to finish it , if they would have let me know they were closing before , I would have asked to get a to-go cup .

What a magnificent and welcoming vibe! You're immediately greeted by an enthusiastic barista! By far the best cardamom latte this far! Also the barista will make the drink to your liking, also making suggestions to make it even more delicious! Yes- I'll take the suggested honey & thank you!!! Nestled up next to a wonderful public library! Also the decor is so eye appealing!!! Just love this coffee shop!

Best iced latte I ever had. Friendly service from the two (very tall) baristas. Other guests looked very relaxed and comfortable doing work and one group having a meeting, but sound level inside was still fine.

Great little coffee bar right next to a library. The service was friendly and prompt even with several people in line. I tried the rose latte and was not disappointed. It was not overly sweet, thankfully, and the rose floral notes were present but not over powering. It was a Perfectly balanced latte! There isn't a lot of seating inside so coffee with a friend is doable, but not with a large group.

Great local spot adjacent to the Hollywood branch of the public library. Service is wonderful- the baristas are sincerely friendly (not in a "have to be friendly way" like some of the chain coffee shops). Nice outdoor seating under shady tree, as well as indoor seating too. Delicious baked goods - I am currently obsessed with the chickpea empanada. But most importantly the coffee is top notch! My iced oat milk latte is consistently smooth and creamy with the perfect balance of espresso and milk. My new favorite morning stop as I start my day!

Stopped in Saturday morning around 9 before heading to the Hollywood farmer's market. It was not busy, and we were able to order quickly and receive lattes in no time. My husband and I both ordered the rose lattes, but they did not put the fancy rose petals on like we saw in the pictures. It's nice you can order a 16 oz latte if you're in the mood for more liquid-- it's not too common at independent cafes. They also have a nice selection of pastries from Farina bakery! Plenty of indoor seating, natural light, and a few outdoor tables as well.

Friendly staff and good latte. I stopped by on a cold morning and got the rose latte. I really enjoyed it - it was a good balance of sweet and bitter. The cafe space looked really cute and cozy but I had to run - would love to comeback, especially when the library next door is open.

This was walking distance from our Airbnb and it got great reviews, so we thought we'd check it out. Plus, everyone seemed to rave about the rose latte, and how often do you see a rose latte on a coffee shop menu? So we went and got rose lattes, along with an apple cheddar scone, chick pea and sweet potato hand pie, and a Marionberry pop tart. The rose lattes were so pretty (thanks to the dried rose petals on top) and the pastries were quite delightful! They even had dog treats available for our pups! Anyway, everything was so good and we were so intrigued by the juniper latte that we went back to get that. And wow was that good! It's apparently only a seasonal flavor, but I hope it can be a year round flavor. The space is really cute and they use Sterling Coffee (which is the best coffee in Portland, IMO).

Great cold brew! It was also very comfortable here, they had the doors open and the music was pleasant. The employees were mellow, really enjoyed this place.

Visited this coffee shop for the first time with a new person and, overall, had a great time. Our order was taken well (no mistakes/issues with our drinks, my milk type substitution, or their cardamom addition). Both drinks came out to around $12 which was reasonable given the drink quality. Payment through physical card, cash, and digital payment were available. I got a rose latte with oat milk and my companion got the chai latte with cardamom. The coffee was prepared quickly (ready within 10-15 mins of ordering). The presentation of both of our drinks was masterful (check out the pictures I added). The drink consistency and taste were fire and we found both drinks to be really solid. Honestly, could drink a cup of straight creamer and milk froth lol; both were that good. The interior of the shop is small (with closely placed tables) but it created an intimate setting which was fine. Dogs are allowed in the shop so you're likely to see a leashed dog if you decide to drink your order there. (We didn't mind that but felt necessary to document if you have sensitive dander allergies.) Would recommend if you're looking for a quick, intimate, affordable coffee spot. ------------ Dinged one star because of a slight discrepancy with the store name in-person (Holly Rose) and store name online/in Apple Maps (Bitter Rose Coffee Bar). That created minor confusion when trying to locate the shop but the store's address number is visible which helped me locate it. The shop is right next to a library which is really convenient.

I loved the service, drinks were great. A bit pricey for a rose latte though, considering the only difference was adding some flavor. I liked the presentation though!

They carry Ocean Buns from The Sparrow Bakery! That alone is reason to visit this Rose of a coffee shop! An Ocean Bun is basically a brioche role, like a cinnamon roll but flavired with cardamon & vanilla and no icing. So less sweet and perfect. They are divine! And now I no longer have to make the 20 minute track to St. John's because The Bitter Rose gets the Ocean Buns and other delicious baked treats (scones, chocolates chip cookies, macaroons) and breakfast sandwiches from The Sparrow. Oh, happy day!!! But the rest of you are here for the coffee! Got you covered, it's fab! Several varieties and flavors of lattes, matcha, iced coffees and of course espresso and drip coffee. I'm a basic Americano gal or when I want a treat, I go for a mocha a cardamom latte. someday I'll experiment more and try the signature Rose or the orange blossom latte. The bright white & black patterned tile around the bar caught my eye as I was entering the Hollywood Library next door and I'm so glad I decided to follow my instincts. The coffee shop is clean and modern with several places to sit. The service is incredibly friendly, the perfect neighborhood coffee place. How did I never notice this place? I used to live in Grant Park and have driven by thousands of times. It's funny what is and isn't in our consciousness. Well after 22 years I decided to join the library and the bonus was discovering The Bitter Rose. My new go to place for coffee and when I'm craving a delicious cardamon treat, I'll head here for the Ocean Bun. Thanks to the barista I now know to come early or call ahead as the Ocean Buns sell out early every day. Of course they do, they are phenomenal!

The name may say Bitter, not it is anything but that. I moved back to my neighborhood where I grew up and been frequenting my newest cafe fave. A friend told me they changed ownership a while back and the service is phenomenal. With expanded hours too, the cafe has seen a steady stream of customers coming and going including myself. Prior to moving, I would come here on Sundays before volunteering. The staff is ultra friendly and does a great job recommending what they offer and always do a great job with the right amount of cream and honey with my coffee. They offer punch cards and since I frequent do often they rack up pretty fast. I treated myself to my first complimentary drink - the orange blossom latte. The drink is made with extra care and the finishing touch was shavings off orange zest. From the first sip to the last, it was simply satisfying. The cafe was also a savior when I started working on my first day in the neighborhood. I had wi fi issues and had deadlines to meet so I hustled to the cafe and got the job done. So thank you very much for the assist!! If you are in the neighborhood and getting books from the library, come by next door and treat yourself to some tasty drinks and delicious eats, cheers!!

This is a beautiful cafe on a pretty corner of Portland, a very nice spot to hang out and read. I got a cortado and it was perfect, and I had a tasty, moist piece of banana bread. When I was there, there was only one person doing everything and the place was popping, so it was a bit of an unnecessary wait. There were five of us in line, and the server (who was very friendly) had to take the order, ring it up, MAKE the order, give it to the person, then take the next order.

An ideal Sunday-date with the Mrs; she a Rose Latte, me Latte then a Cappuccino. There is a palpable-vibe from the staff, the atmosphere is light and airy, and the coffee was expertly prepared!

I cannot believe how rude these people are. This shop is close to my house but I will not ever come back, time after time they are all so rude.

Lattes are excellent, pastries are amazing (they have ocean rolls), and the setting is cool. However, 15 minutes for a latte! And it's the slowest service every time I come. I've been three times now and it's always 10 to 15 minutes, even when it's not that busy. To go coffee drink shouldn't take that long..

Ok this is now one of my fav coffee bars in Portland! Super friendly barista! Super yummy options! And the decor is so inviting. Try the rose matcha. So good and you can add real rose petals!

I love finding little coffee shops around places I am visiting and soaking them all up. The vibes are typically so modern that I fall in love. This spot was no different. The baristas were so helpful and really knew what they were doing. You walk into a brightly lit oasis by the library with people on their laptops and soft music playing and you are instantly doin' alright ya know. I ordered a pastry, 2 breakfast sandwiches and mixed the rose latte with the white chocolate latte and was in heaven. I forgot to order iced like I usually do but the steamed frothed oat milk with little rose petals was perfection. I absolutely loved it. the sandwiches were warm and tasty and perfect for our cold walk in the park. I am glad we stopped. I love the name and the shop as a whole.

ok place to sit and do work (although it is very cold inside), staff are friendly, but the drinks are not very good. the cold brew tastes kind of off and the lattes are weak and watery. I would just sit in the library next door and bring your own coffee.

I love this little coffee shop!! Coffee is flavorful, not too sweet, and just feels cozy. They welcome dogs and I enjoy seeing little pets come through while doing some work here. Staff is friendly and helpful. Definitely recommend if you're nearby

Sparkling clean. Friendly staff. Great coffee. What more could you ask for? Oh, and they're located right next to the library. This is a super bonus. The cool tiled white walls definitely help with the overall coolness factor! Everything about the Bitter Rose is a worthy visit. And what makes the place even more special, is the staff are so nice. Definitely a place to go to. And, they make a mean Americano. Straight up, no cream and no sugar. That's the only way to drink them.

Very cute little place to sit for a while and the coffee was good. Right next to the library so it convenient if you like to read and sip coffee!

I don't live in Portland, but I look forward to stopping in here when I'm in town. The coffee is WONDERFUL. Only overshadowed by Ocean, the absolute joy of a human being manning the register and pulling espresso. The pleasure of interacting with someone who loves what he does and does it so well only makes the beverages taste sweeter. And yes, the rose latte is yum, and all the other good stuff people say about this place is true, too. :) Shiny, happy people approve.

This place is lovely. They have non dairy alternatives! That's a big bonus for me since I can't have dairy anymore. The bagels are real ones (boiled) and the pastries look delightful. I had the pop tart pastry. So good! The service was very friendly and efficient. The vibe was chill with oil paintings. Open and full of light.

A pretty cool coffee shop tucked next to the library. The place has the perfect aesthetics and gives you that relaxing feel to it. We ordered a rose latte and a rose matcha. Both came with pieces of dried rose in them. It definitely added the additional aroma to the drinks. I was told that the rose pieces were edible, so I tried it... very interesting taste to it. I think I prefer it as just a flavor enhancer. The barista was friendly and was able to help us out and the people in line in a timely manner.

Very clean, tucked away spot by the library in the Hollywood district. Rose matcha was delicate, not sweetened - I added some simple syrup and liked that I was able to control the sweetness and I liked that the rose was not overpowering. Prices are comparable and fair to other shops in town - maybe even a tad cheaper.

Very cute, very clean, usually not too busy that can't find a corner for yourself inside or outside. I've been there in both the morning and the afternoon. It's positioned very nicely right beside Hollywood library, and when the weather is really warm and pleasant, they'll open one of the sliding glass walls to allow fresh air inside. Coffee is also excellent. Love this spot!

Beautiful creative decorum. Centrally located in the NE Hollywood district. High ceilings, good feelings, no frills. I ordered a simple black coffee, and it was well up to my standard of expectation. Granted, they have a variety of artisan coffee options. With the library next door, be sure to stop on by amid your weekly book checkout.

Fabulous coffee, super friendly staff, baked goods from Rushmore baking. Stopped in today needing a pick me up before a movie. Got a couple of iced americanos for me and the hubby. The roasts were very good, and the space is nice and open. Very welcome addition to the Hollywood neighborhood!

First off, congratulations on your opening! Second, you know how good a coffee shop is when the most basic thing like cold brew or a cappuccino tastes like heaven. Surprise, got a cold brew. Delicious. Didn't add anything to it, don't have to. Rose Matcha was more floral than anything. I've had some elsewhere and this one was just tastes like flowers and milk? Soft opening so definitely have room to improve. Location is great. Who doesn't want a beautiful coffee shop next to the library? Like come on. Aesthetics are on point. Gorgeous tile and wood counter tops are my jam. Those IG people, worth it. Come. Plenty of seating inside and out. Outlets are a must for those long remote work days and they have some!! Joy! Happy about this because some shops don't so awesome. They serve snacks. Go get some. Easy to find parking, employees seem like great people. Excited to see this business BOOM.

Michael and Natalie's rose latte gives me an exquisite dose of productivity. It wins the wrestling match against my negative thought loop one-handed. Makes me feel like I'm blooming inside. Try it. Plus, the joint is aesthetically appealing and with good, non-invasive tunes on. They're great, friendly people, too. Can't go wrong here. Try the hand-whisked matcha latte.

the rose matcha is soo good. light, floral & such a vibrant green color 3 stars because they didn't add any dried rose petals to my latte and there was also someone working on a ladder at the cafe who was very noisy :( i was there to study so it was really distracting to have all the background noise going on. other than that the cafe is really cute and has a nice atmosphere.

Beautiful coffee with house made rose infusion just made my day. The baristas were super sweet and great to chat with. I will definitely be back to try the Rose Matcha next time!

Great spot tucked next to the Hollywood library, try a Cortado for something simple and tasty. Nice people, Luke is doing a tremendous job putting a fresh coat on the place.

Our barista put so much care into our drinks and they are clearly so beautiful! We enjoyed sipping on these during a walk through the Hoyt Arboretum!

Best coffee in Portland. Baristas are knowledgeable and friendly and most importantly, they have a jar of dog treats for the taking.

They make a perfect hot chocolate. The space is perfect - clean, well-laid out and quiet. So thankful to have them here in the neighborhood!

Awful scalding hot bitter latte. I dumped it in the bushes after taking a sip. I was expecting much higher quality judging from the pictures and latte art but but it was all bubbly foam/separated. It wasn't even busy, the cafe was empty.

Amazing coffee and super friendly service :) the lavender latte is definitely the best in town! I've become a regular, and the shop itself is light and welcoming.

Happened upon this place just by chance, but we were happy with the environment and coffee! I just got a cold brew and my gf got a matcha latte - both were good! I'd recommended it if you're in the area and/or just looking for a new coffee spot.

Really enjoyed my pumpkin cold brew yesterday morning. I hadn't been here since Rust closed. He said this place had been there about five months.

This location is a must go to. Natalie brews a mean matcha! The layout is impeccable, very modern and welcoming. Will definitely be back!

Live a block from this place. It has a cool atmosphere tasty coffee, and matcha late! Only thing that makes me not a regular would be the lack of pastry or breakfast options. I think you would make a killing if you broadened your bakery options, GF from New Cascadia, or Gem? (my favs) and ditch the plastic wrap, and I'll be a regular.

This lovely coffee shop is a great place to grab a caffeine fix in the Hollywood neighborhood. I stopped in for a mocha and a pastry and found it to be a comfortable place to kill a couple hours. The staff were efficient and friendly and the coffee was artfully prepared. It is ideally placed to serve as a relaxing waystation given that it is located both next door to the area library branch and just down the street from the Hollywood theater. I'm sure I'll find many an opportunity to return.
