Yelp
This is a review for their dim sum ** spoiler alert ** it's amazingly bad. They use to have decent to good dim sum at both of their standalone locations. I was skeptical of why they moved to the mall and had not gone for ages, but on someone's recommendation, me and the SO decided to give it a try, being the dim sum in this area has been rather substandard. To our amazement, they managed to exceed our worst expectations and placed themselves at the bottom of the list for dim sum restaurants.
We went this Sunday just before 1pm and they had the carts going around. We initially picked two items siu mai and green dumplings, as most of the items looked neither fresh nor that appetizing. Unfortunately, another few carts came by before we could sample what we got. If we had, we probably would have called it quits and asked for the check. So they we able to get us to buy another four items, the char-siu pastry, eggplant w/ "shrimp" paste, "shrimp" taro and the water chestnut cake. The only decent item was the siu mai, which was small, but passable.
The other 'supposed to be hot' items were pretty much cold to stale, the eggplant was oily and wife described the filling smelling like "stinky feet" and oddly, it was breaded too. The skin on the green dumpling (see pics) was thick and doughy and disgracefully anemic, though flavor was not repulsive. The char siu pastry had way too much dough and was chewy rather than flaky - the worst rendition I've ever had, compared to just to local dim sum, not even NYC, LA, San Fran, Toronto, Vancouver, or Hong Kong. The shrimp taro was cold, chewy and had a questionable filling -even looking at the pic, it looks unappetizing. Comparably the chestnut cake was edible, besides having an old oil taste.
Anyway, I think you get the idea, that this place should be avoided, unless you like to play Russian roulette with you meals. Now I wonder if the interior was dark and dingy, so you cannot get a good look at the food .... The service was not much better, they brought our water out near the end of our meal, though we only stayed for ~15 minutes, as we wanted to leave as soon as possible. Perhaps a few minutes longer because we couldn't get the attention of anyone to get our check (it wasn't busy). Staff was young and seemed inexperienced and ambivalent. When I mentioned that the food was terrible and to pass it on to the chef, the response was to dismiss the issue as being cold, saying "oh, someone forgot to put the food under the heat lamp." Or translated as "too bad for you" - no apologies or any effort to correct. In the end, the damage was $31, much "food" left of the table and a traumatic experience that will linger on for years.
It is sometimes hit or miss with dim sum, but for a weekend lunch, they should be at their best. To have such a poor offering in every way at their prime time is a red flag, hard to believe this was simply a "bad" day. Far East or Gourmet Inspiration would be better bets for dim sum.
