The 20 Best Spots In Northeast Philly

"Coming to the Northeast and not getting a pastry from Holmesburg Bakery would be like confusing the Four Seasons and Four Seasons Total Landscaping—a mistake that will haunt you forever. To avoid disaster, have a powdered cream donut (one of our many favorites at the family-owned shop). And whether you’re grabbing a batch for takeout or curbside pickup, the sweet aroma from any freshly fried batch will do more to pump up your morning than blasting Paramore." - candis mclean

Google
Holmesburgh always comes through for very large orders for us at NEHS. I can't say enough positive things about them. The students and staff love when it's Donut Day!

Jack Herr

Google
We got cookies, a muffin, cream donuts, and irish soda bread to share - all delicious and reasonably priced.

Google
The cream donut at this location is not just one of…but THEE absolute best donut I have had in my entire life since birth. Cannot stress this enough. We drive well over an hour consistently to get a dozen. Nice people working too but seriously…if I could have only one dessert for the rest of my life it would be this. Eating it for the first time changed me and no where else even comes close to the taste of this cream donut. I beg you to try for yourselves. If you are within 5 hours of this bakery it is worth the trip.

Google
We bought a full sheet cake half chocolate half white from here for daughters baby shower. Have bought from here before so figured it would good. What a disappointment it was dry tasteless it crumbled apart. Even several guests commented how bad it was. I called asked if they were new owners was told no. To be honest I don't think they cared we were not happy. I asked to speak to owner or manager was told they would get back to me. It's sad that Giant, Acme, BJs, ShopRite have better cakes than a local old time shope

Google
Let me tell you...I have had strawberry shortcake at multiple bakeries. They can't compete with this place. Everywhere else is nasty and dry. Holmesburg bakery has the best strawberry shortcake I've ever tasted. It's delicious, not too sweet, moist and always fresh. Love it, had to tell everyone I know.

Google
EXTREMELY overpriced now it's sad that they run out of cookies so fast n don't seem to care about customers. It's cut n dry anymore. I used to go in everyday. Now I can't bc of the rude staff n the ridiculous amount it costs for a lb of butter Cookirs. Sheesh. Butt they do have thee BEST BUTTER COOKIES.

Google
Bakery opens 7:00 am on Sunday. 7:05 I ask for 3 cheese danish, young lady says only two left. I said it’s only 7:05 , you just opened. How are you sold out already ? They said they were sold out by orders. I stated that they should make more for other people coming in. Poor management. No reason to be sold out this soon. Save your money. Poor selection. Rather buy a tasty cake

Google
Moved into the area and my first visit to highly recommended bakery! My hubby's birthday today, so I bought him the 5***** creme donut! Which he says is 5*! Nobody mentioned in the reviews that special holiday German treats (see photos) could be found here at the bakery! My mother has German heritage, so I've heard about them my whole life, but I have never seen them! Butter cake has always been popular in my family as well and we be acquired on my next visit!!

Yelp
Holmesburg Bakery is a small family owned bakery located in Northeast Philly. The bakery offers an assortment of cakes, donuts, cinnamon rolls and pies. I decided to get what they were known for and that was the butter cake and the cream donut. Both were good, the cream donut was powdered on the outside and filled with a somewhat sweet cream. The butter cake tasted like cake mix with crispy edges. I never had anything like that before and it was not bad at all. Overall service was good. I paid about 10.00 for both. Oh and be careful if you park your car. They have a kiosk to pay but if you going for a quick purchase, have someone waiting in the car if you can cause the ticket people are coming in hot over there sheesh lol!!

Yelp

Yelp
I've seen several sandwich shops in the Mayfair area selling Holmesburg Bakery pound cake and cake cups so I wanted to stop in to see what their retail store was like. I found on-street parking right in front of the store. The inside is much smaller than I imagined, but they fit most of the product line in there. The girl up front wasn't much of a people person so I just got right down to ordering as she didn't show much interest in my questions. I bought a pound of chocolate chip cookies for $16.99 and two four inch loaves of pound cake for $6.99 each. They have a day old display with brownies and cookies at a $1 a piece so I grabbed some of those. The brownies and cookies were moist and rich. Just the right sweetness and size. I would repeat. The pound cake was ok. It held together well, but was dry. Hate to say it, but when you've been spoiled with Stock's its hard to come back down from that quality. I'm not a baker, but maybe they need more butter!! If I'm in the area I would repeat to try some other items. Thanks guys!!

Yelp
Donuts are amazing!!! They are a steal and so big and filled with cream. Fantastic! Heard about them on the news as the best donuts in Philly and I agree!

Yelp
So I saw a holmesburg bakery m and m butter cake at a local sandwich shop. Picture my big back and greedy excitement. When I opened the cake, I had to question even if it was done baking. I even called the bakery to see if this was batter and I needed to complete the process... but no... it's done already. Thumbs all the way down.

Yelp
They have the best lightest, fluffier cream donuts on earth and have been in existence forever. They yellow birthday cake is also great.

Yelp
I stop here once in a while on a Sunday morning when I feel like abusing my health. Donuts and everything else I've tried have always been good. No complaints ... Will continue to return.

Yelp
Don't blink or you might miss it!! This cute local owned bakery is located on a busy street on Frankford Ave. If you're not paying attention you might miss it because it's so small. However don't like this small bakery fool ya. It's flavors and baked goods list is so rich and flavorful in so many ways! They definitely make some of the best powdered crème donuts (more like a creme donut sandwich). So creamy and decadent. They also serve cannolis and regular glazed donuts. Customers can also order a customized cake from them. There is residential street parking a couple blocks down and meter parking along Frankford.
google avatar

Yelp
Great little one-off locally owned bakery. All that we got here was very good. Street parking can be a bit scarce but this bakery is worth it.

Yelp
Yooooooo!!! This baby place is AWESOME! Okay so listen, they have this doughnut that reminds me of a Gordita but with cream inside and powder sugar on the outside. My woman bought three (coworker, sister-in-law and ours) HELL TO THE NO... WE KEPT ALL THREE! You heard!?

Yelp
Came here because I was in the area and wanted a cake for my wife's birthday. The small customer area was filled with all kinds of pastries and cakes which I wanted to try them all. The strawberry shortcake slices looked good and I asked if they had a full cake of it. The friendly counter staff checked in the back and I was good to go. They wrote on the cake for me, and I was on my way after paying $21. The strawberry shortcake was delightful with many slices of strawberries and a light and airy whipped cream frosting. The vanilla cake was not too dense and everything just complemented each other. I so wanted to get some of the cream-filled donuts but had to back off otherwise I would have broke the bank and also my calories for the whole day! I've had bad luck with some bakeries where items looked much better than they turned out to be when you actually ate what you bought. Truly disappointing. However, this was not the case with the strawberry shortcake from Holmesburg Bakery.

Cathy W.

Yelp
They have the best cream donuts, plus alot of other baked goods. But love their cream donuts so fill of cream.

Yelp
Stopped in today to get some donuts. Staff is friendly, everything is always fresh and I'm always happy I stopped in! I like supporting local small businesses!
google avatar

Audrey L.

Yelp
Small little bakery where the staff was very warm and welcoming to us when we entered. I kept it simple and just had a glazed donut and it was fresh, soft and very good.

Carol T.

Yelp
Great old family bakery with delicious baked goods including donuts, butter cake and cookies. Staff is very helpful.

Yelp
The cherry turnovers are AMAZING! Not overly sweet & the right amount of cherrie to dough ratio. Completely forgot to take a picture until after it was in my belly!

Ben K.

Yelp
What is wrong with the people who make the tea biscuits here? Such small, weirdly shaped blobs - try cutting them in half! They don't know how to make a nice symmetrical biscuit? Looks like I'll have to go back to buying my biscuits down at the Shop Rite.
google avatar

Yelp
My son loved the creme donuts, I love the danish, this place is great! Definitely recommend!!

Annemarie G.

Yelp
Been coming to the bakery for over two years now. Once a month on a early Sunday morning we come first thing to enjoy the famous cream filled powered donuts! We also get various other goodies from apple Tuen overs to cannoli! I'm sorry to say the last visit I was very displeased. We got a $20 order early on Sunday morning. The pastry wasn't as fresh as it usually is and our donuts taste stale :( I have never had a bad experience here so needless to say we were shocked that these definitely were not freshly baked.. and I'm disappointed they were passed off to us as freshly baked.....they all broke apart at the tops bc of how dry and it's clear in the taste, it's old dough..the lack of freshness alone is surprising... If I lived closer I'd go back and return them. I won't be going back here any time soon :(

Yelp
Fantastic cream donuts Philly style. Classic bakery with quality over quantity. The staff was super helpful as I came in and sadly there were no cream donuts but they advised that a batch was in progress & would be done in 15 min. Went and got a WAWA coffee and came back and sure enough the donuts were ready upon my return!

Rosemarie M.

Yelp
Very dissapointed with strawberry short cake.Purchased on a Monday morning at 10 o'clock.Served it at 12 noon cake was steel .Made three attempts to speak to a manager.Person would never get on phone. After 24 hours later and 3 phone calls the employee working kept relaying what I said to whoever was in charge. They asked me to bring cake in.I saw no reason to keep it I through it in the trash. All I wanted was a fresh baked cake.I live an hour away and paid $25. dollars. They refused to do anythig about it without the steal cake.If I could have spoken to some one that same day I would have still had the cake.I said is it worth it to get a bad review than just giving me a fresh cake.Person I was talking to had nothing to say.

Yelp
I made a quick trip to Holmesburg Bakery to satisfy my doughnut craving. Finally, a place that carries powdered jelly doughnuts (glazed and sugared seem to be the standard in jelly doughnuts these days). The raspberry jelly was definitely homemade and oozing out my doughnut like I like it. Although I can't make this a regular spot, I'll try to get back real soon for that wine cake.

Yelp
Disappointed with the birthday cake I purchased for my daughter. It was supposed to be two layers however that was not the case when we cut into it. It was more like a layer and a half. Half of the cake had a layer of icing to replace the top layer of the cake. This was apparently a mess up cake that should've been tossed.
google avatar

Terry M.

Yelp
Holmesburg Bakery sometimes was Hinkles Bakery but no matter the name, their products are top shelf. Raisin pie is delicious, pasteries are extreme and the most of the most are the CREAM DONUTS....I would travel 50 miles if I had to just to get them....no one has anything that comes near to this delicacy and I hope they continue for many years to come. I put them in the freezer so I don't eat them all at once....thawed or frozen I love them and will continue to rave about them. If you have not tried them...do yourself a huge favor and treat yourself and a friend because you will not be disappointed.

Yelp
Best cream donuts I ever had. Everyone should try them at least once. The customer service here is amazing and order ahead because they go by fast.
google avatar

Dana D.

Yelp
Easy to order over the phone and schedule in advance. Cake was ready on time. Everything tasted delicious! Asked for some decorations on cake, it met the minimum explanation I provided, but design was a little underwhelming (I felt like it could have been a little more decorated given the directions and overall price).
google avatar

Yelp
Everything was stale , very disappointed bought cinnamon buns hard as a rock, the cream doughnuts were good. Everything else very old and stale. Not going back

Cecilia F.

Yelp
It is a small city bakery.. Been there for years. I moved to New Hope, Bucks County and I drive down as often as possible. I just call ahead, place order and make the trip to Philadelphia. They make outstanding cream donuts and also chocolate rods Also wonderful pound cake not really available at your box stores or grocery Dee F - New Hope

Yelp
I saw it as an omen to come here, when I arrived 30 minutes early to an appointment, and checked out all the raving about this place on Yelp. I was surprised that you do have to get buzzed into this tiny place, or maybe there is a butter cake thief out there. And this place is tiny! If 4 customers came in, 1 would have to wait outside. Thankfully the girls behind the counter, although teenagers, are extremely sweet and helpful. I kept asking about the cream donuts, and then Boston cream, and then something else they were also out of (it was 3 PM on a Friday) and she patiently waited as I tried to make up my mind for something else and apologized for not having what I wanted. Finally I picked up a mix of donuts, some cinnabuns and this butter cake that Joe D. was raving about. I was happy with all the pastries, especially the cinnabun, but I was so NOT happy with that butter cake! You see, I am a person that eats with my eyes, and this cake looks like the most boring, ugly pasty cake you will ever see. For a small baking plate (like where you would make 6 brownies) you pay $7 for a butter cake that is essentially a dry thin cake with a thick layer of butter and cream on top. The top part is a strange texture and wayyyy too sweet even for someone like me that loves sugar. I was extremely disappointed and threw out the entire thing after one bite (my beau did not care to even try it). Needless to say, I am willing to try this place one more time to attempt one of these highly sought after cream donuts, but I'm"m not exactly racing back. Also, bring cash, there is a $10 min for plastic.

Yelp
"Dropped by" with my three adult children to pick up some cheesecake. Got the German chocolate, Vanilla, and Peanut Butter mini cheesecakes. All three of these were exceptional--smooth and creamy yet also rich with flavor. EVERYTHING in this store looked amazing. Obviously some highly skilled pastry chefs and artists are cranking out some of the best desserts. We will be back.
google avatar

Jer S.

Yelp
These cream donuts are made by God himself. I bought a few and my coworkers cannot stop talking about them.
google avatar

Jill M.

Yelp
I love Holmesburg bakery Cream donuts, and I did get a cake from there in the past that was very good, but this lady is Cake my daughter got for her friend was extremely disappointing. It looked wonderful in the icing was amazing but the cake was so dry it was inevitable. It tasted old, stale, and dry. Not the slightest bit moist. Didn't go over very well which was unfortunate because it looked so nice

Rob R.

Yelp
The absolute best of the best!! This bakery is a small store front but don't be deceived. It's wonderful and worth the trip!

Beatrice B.

Yelp
Great donuts and service. I went in late afternoon for a cake and they said no problem put happy birthday on it and I was on my way. They saved the day for me
google avatar

Yelp
I purchased a Red Velvet cake on Saturday, 11/09/19. The cake was one of two available for purchase. The cake was a waste of $25! It was extremely dry and lacked flavor. I served 5 slices and they were all thrown in the trash. One guest at our Friendsgiving noted the cake reminded her of red carpet from the 70's. I bought my wedding cake from this bakery 11 years ago; it was amazing. Please find your former bakery or stop selling old cakes.

Javon M.

Yelp
I ordered a 2 tier birthday cake for a surprise party and when I gave them all the details I said I needed a black and silver cake. When I picked the cake up the day of the party it was 2 different shades of GREEN. And not like it would be a different tone in certain lighting because everyone asked why the cake was green. $180 for something that was obviously wrong. If I didn't need it for a party that day I would have never paid for it!!

Jackson L.

Yelp
The girl at the counter is super rude to old people. No empathy for people. Older lady was asking two simple questions, and she gave the old lady attitude. Your donuts are not that great for you to talk to people like that. Super sugary & texture is trash. Don't understand the hype
google avatar

Absinthe H.

Yelp
The bakery is easy to find, small and a little cute. Customer service is nice. But. There are no price tags on any items, what's up with that? Prices are decided on the customer's appearance? So. Let us get down to the brass tacks. The touted clotted cream donuts are nothing special, if not to say slightly gross. Bavarian cream donuts are virtually indistinguishable from their Dunkin Donuts counterparts. The individual Jewish apple cakes are 6% apple and 94% dough. The raspberry jam and cream cheese parcels are tolerable, but nothing to write home about. The red wine cake is almost all dough and a tiny, thin layer of raspberry jam. Every item was cloyingly sweet and bland. And there was only one loaf of bread there for purchase. Is this a bakery or what? I am not going back here.

Yelp
This bakery has to be the best bakery i've gone to in philly! the sugar cookies are amazing! they're also a bit big too! the chocolate chip cookies are good, but i've had better ones before. my family had gotten a plain cheesecake but they gave us coconut custard instead. they also ordered the cream doughnuts. i didn't have any but, they said the doughnuts were good, but better in july. However, i think the price was pretty reasonable. in conclusion, this bakery deserves a solid four star rating. (out of five)

Cheesecake215 ..

Yelp
Tried a chocolate covered cannoli, it was incredible!! Had the signature powdered sugar cream donut- delicious donut with lots and lots of icing! We have yet to try our remaining treats of a churro donut and a chocolate brownie but we are very excited to try!! A nice afternoon treat, not to mention the prices are great!

Yelp
I learned about this place from a fellow patron, in a diner, who said the cream filled donuts were the best they ever had. So I just had to try this bakery. Some reviewers said this is a small place; yes it is, but I wasn't there to camp out so who cares? Some reviewers found the staff nasty. I disagree !! To me - The staff (the girls) .......... Super friendly. The Cream filled donuts............ THE BEST The Jelly filled donuts............ THE BEST. Holmesburg Bakery is THE BEST !!

Lisa J.

Yelp
The owner needs to teach the staff about handling food etc. The young woman with glasses and dark hair touched every part of her body before picking up a customers pastry. Yuck! I will not be purchasing ANYTHING from Holmesburg bakery again.
google avatar

Bob H.

Yelp
I've been a long time customer of Holmesburg Bakery. I've only ever purchased their donuts. They have the best cream filled donuts, anywhere! It's not like any cream donut you'll find elsewhere. The filling is a bit thicker, similar to a cake icing. The donuts are always fresh and delicious. A dozen will run you roughly $12.00. The bakery has been around for over 100 years and that alone should show they offer a quality product. They have recently remodeled and the place looks good. I did prefer the old school bakery look though. My only complaint would be the girls working the counter. They aren't always the friendliest nor the most personable counter girls I've met. Solid 4 stars though.
google avatar

Lorence C.

Yelp
Holmesburg Bakery is one of the better bakeries located near me. They have been there for years. They always keep the shop clean. They have a professional staff that is friendly and helpful. There is plenty of street parking. They have an array of baked goods but I suggest the powder cream filled donuts. They are Amazing. Go check them out for yourself. You will not be disappointed

Yelp
So I placed an order 3 weeks ago for my husbands 4 year clean anniversary. They "never got my email" which is what I was told this morning when they also called me and told me they "didn't have ingredients to make red velvet cupcakes". Instead of them making a pull apart cake which is supposed to look like a cake and just be able to be pulled apart to make it easier then having to cut it, they put a bunch of cupcakes on a cake board and wrote the message on the cake board instead of on the cake. It is the crappiest bakery job I've ever seen in my life and I've worked in a bakery and for once didn't want to have to spend all weekend baking for a big event. Once picking it up and telling them my disgust and that if it wasn't last minute of me realizing they didn't understand what was supposed to be done I would have canceled it and made it myself they give me attitude and say "oh well sorry I don't know what you want us to do". The girl that answers the phone is the rudest person I've ever spoke to and when I told her I didnt want to speak to her I wanted a manager she laughed and said "ok well bye". I will not be letting this go and will be calling back on Monday or Tuesday after the holiday weekend.

Yelp
1st visit and definitely not last. My wife and I wanted to try something other than stocks bakery for a change.(you really can have too much of a good thing) well anyway,We ordered a birthday cake for my sons 1st birthday at the last minute. figured by the yelp reviews how could we go wrong ? yelper's were on point once again. I Ordered a 1/4 sheet cake for my sons 1st birthday and not only did it look good ( i posted pics ) but it tasted awesome. Moist, buttery, sweet deliciousness...needless to say the cake lasted less than 10 minutes. Kids and adults were going back for 2nd pieces with the quickness. I also bought 1/2 dozen donuts since I couldn't help it. You guys talking about that cream donut ? Man, you guys ain't f'n around. That donut needs to be given an award or something.

Yelp
First timer. Take out donuts for mi padres 58th birthday. Excellent cream filled donuts. From what I've heard, they were on the food network. I will go back to try different assortment of donuts.
