"Holsten’s Brookdale Confectionary, in New Jersey, is known for being the location of the final episode of the Sopranos. According to nostalgia archivist Rolando Pujol’s newsletter the Retrologist, the booth of that fated scene is apparently currently up for sale on eBay. As of today, the bidding has reached more than $63,000. Bidding ends this Monday." - Emma Orlow

"At first glance, Holsten’s looks like a relic from the bygone era of soda fountains. But beyond its vintage signage, decor, and classic menu, the unassuming ice cream parlor and diner is part of a very important piece of television history: It was the setting for the final, controversial scene of The Sopranos. The scene, which ends ambiguously, is long debated in fan circles. What was the fate of mob boss Tony Soprano? What happened in the booth where he sat with his wife, Carmela, and son, AJ, after the screen abruptly cut to black? The world may never know. But you can ponder alternate theories as you sit in your own booth and order the same onion rings Tony did.  Long before the spot was cemented in pop culture history, New Jersey residents came to Holsten’s from all over the state for their homemade desserts. First opened under the name Strubbe’s Ice Cream Parlor in 1939, it went through several names and owners before ending up as Holsten’s in the 1950s. The current owners say that the secret to their success is that they keep everything old fashioned and that they continue to make their chocolate and ice cream themselves. After the airing of the series finale of The Sopranos, however, fans of the show flocked to the ice cream parlor from all over the country. When James Gandolfini, who played the character Tony Soprano, passed away in 2013, the booth where the Soprano family sat was sectioned off for several days. Today, you can slide into the booth, still marked “Reserved for the Soprano family” to take a picture." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

"Holsten's in Bloomfield, New Jersey, [where the infamous final scene of the series takes place and which also appears in the film] hadn't really changed much over time. The owners had some historic photographs that we could reference. But the frustrating thing there was that there are buildings across the street that needed almost no work for the period but, if you're looking out from Holsten's, they were a little bit left so you couldn't really see them directly out the window."

Came to try out the food as there were many rave reviews. Took a good 1/2 hour after ordering to get our burgers served. The kitchen is within few feet from dining area. Disappointed the burgers & fries were barely warm and the fries weren’t crispy. The ice cream sundae wasn’t bad but we had much better homemade ice cream elsewhere. Prices are affordable but we wouldn’t mind paying more for better quality. However its still worth a visit for the nostalgic decor & the Sopranos had filmed here.

Google
"I went ahead and ordered some for the table." Tony Soprano, The Sopranos. Few things are more iconic in NJ than diners, and the Sopranos and Holsten have these in spades. Holsten's not only looks the part, with its classic Americana bar, red leather booths, and family-friendly service, but it also has the quality of food that makes your stomach dance for joy and a price that will make you want to go back. The service was great. There are plenty of booths for families and a bar for solos or couples. They pay homage to its Sopranos fame with framed photos of Tony Soprano. If you're lucky, you can also get to sit in the booth Tony sat in. We went strictly for the ice cream, which is known to be incredible—and it was! But we were even more surprised by how good everything else we ordered was, too. The burger was juicy and tasty, the grilled cheese was great, and the onion rings were top-notch. We will definitely be going back when we are craving burgers and ice cream.

Google
If you are looking for the best ice cream shop in NJ , Holsten’s is the place. I have been going here for years. It is my absolute favorite ice cream. The chocolate syrup is like no other. I cannot rave about this place enough.. They also serve the best burgers and hot dogs around. It is the old school shop. They also make their own candy. This is also the place where the Sopranos TV show shot their final show. See for yourself, you won’t be disappointed.

Google
Holsten's is an absolute must see destination in New Jersey, especially if you are a Soprano's fan! It was so much fun visiting and getting our picture taken in the infamous Soprano booth! The onion rings were the best we've ever had! This place is legendary. It was really crowded but we were lucky to be able to place our order and get a seat in a reasonable amount of time. Good food and service, great visit!

Google
Come for the sopranos. Stay for some of the best burgers and onion rings in Jersey. The ice cream is delicious. Sundaes and shakes were rich and creamy. If you do one thing and do it well for decades there has to be a reason for it. Take the family here if you’re in Jersey! Service was really good. People We got to sit in THE booth. Don’t stop believin!

Google
Always wanted to go here and see the infamous booth! Unfortunately we were a few months too late. The infamous booth was sold on eBay and the sale funded renovations of the restaurant. Although the booth is new, the tiny jukebox remains and it is still really cool! Our meal was great, service was great, and the chocolates are amazing!

Chris Covey

Google
Sat at the counter on a weekday evening. Had the best Vanilla Cherry ice cream, my partner had Coconut Chocolate Chip. The ice cream was delicious! The Owner chatted with us about what makes good ice cream...and then shared a special treat, Banana ice cream. Wonderful! The atmosphere and service was excellent 👍

Had Egg and melt on rye bread. Delicious! 🤤 Many great options available. Vintage style setting. Feels retro. Reasonable prices or even lower prices. Great timely service. Pretty fast food service. Though they don’t have a ton of fancy ice cream flavors like ice cream shops do, the ones they have taste amazing.

Yelp
Such a nostalgic feeling when you enter. I love that everything is the same as it was when my parents brought me here as a kid. Food is priced well, and delicious considering how busy they can be! I would say their onion rings are a staple (featured in the Sopranos) and their delicious ice cream. Come here for a meal that'll hit the spot and/or savory dessert. Also, try their candy. It's homemade and around Easter they have marshmallow filled chocolate eggs that are to DIE for.

Chastity R.

Yelp
Holsten's was a place on NJ.com's list of Best Ice Cream Shops so OF COURSE I went. Super unassuming from the outside. I almost thought they weren't even open because the shades were drawn. But as soon as I stepped in, the place was buzzing like it was lunch time in midtown Manhattan on a pay day! It's not only an ice cream shop but a luncheonette also! With homemade chocolate by the pound too!!! They've got two guys cooking and a whole gang of employees that do everything else. They not only serve tables but they also scoop ice cream, run the food, bus tables, get to-go orders, etc. So they run the back of the house AND the front! They share tips and they all pull their weight. VERY impressive!! REALLY impressive!! Their homemade ice cream selections were the classics. No unique concoctions that grabbed your attention but they do the classics right. I got the Maple Walnut. I was happy with the huge chunks of walnuts and the quantity of them. The serving was humongous but I'm not complaining. Oooo also, they shot the last scene of "The Sopranos" here. Just one more thing to be impressed about with this place. Only ONE gripe. Just ONE. Parking is a bitch and circling around takes longer than a circle around. Grab the first spot you see even if it IS 3 blocks away! It's worth it!

Gerry S.

Yelp
This is not by design like one of the newer established 50's chains like Johnny Rockets or Smash Burger, but because it has always been that way, it is the Real Deal in every respect. The prices are also remarkably cheap, and while there only are about a dozen or so varieties of ice cream, all of them are made in-house and are very fresh. PS: This fine establishment happened to be the spot in which The Sopranos' series finale was filmed. Epic moment in TV history. Cheers

Kristian A.

Yelp
You can ask them to make you any kind of combination of ice cream and they will do it. The milkshakes came out amazing (only $7 each). The servers were amazing and super friendly. They also sell merchandise if you are interested in a hat or shirt or cup. The place is a very old school vibe especially since it's where the last episode of sopranos were shot.

Virginia T.

Yelp
Cool spot with counters, chocolate bar and booths. Super old fashioned but cool spot where you can grab a quick lunch, ice cream and more!

Glenn S.

Yelp
Finally made it here. Like many people we wanted to come here, eat, sit in the soprano booth, get the whole experience. Got here early on a Monday. Place was empty and we got a really friendly greeting when we walked in. Got to sit wherever we wanted, of course you know where we sat. We got onion rings, a cheeseburger with bacon and fries and a tuna sandwich on rye. The food was really good. Like home made type. We got some candy in the way out which turned out to be really really good tasting dark chocolates. Don't sleep on the candy counter, it looks old fashioned but that candy is fresh and the dark chocolate nonpareils are the best I ever had. Our waitress was awesome too. Go here, buy a lot of stuff. We didn't have room for ice cream but I'm planning a return trip soon for that .

Dragonlady L.

Yelp
Mother's Day Saturday and was having fun all day with friends, and didn't want to cook! Kids all agreed, we love the family-friendly atmosphere and staff and decor. They just made some updates but it still felt good and lived-in, homey place. Let's Go to Holstens they all said! Burgers, Floats, Cheese Fries and more! So glad to have gone. When I called they said there would be a 2-3 minute wait. We got there 15minutes later and boy, the line was building up. Had a party of 5 and the back left table was open. Super busy time so service was a bit slow, but the food and ice cream were fantastic and worth the wait! Always a family favorite place that doesn't disappoint.

Debra H.

Yelp
As a huge Sopranos fan I couldn't wait to try this diner. I wanted to sit by the jukebox but unfortunately another family was there, so we ended up sitting at another table. Hopefully the next time, so I can say I sat where the Sopranos family ate on their. Anyway, I ordered a typical meal. Grilled cheese with tomato and onion rings. It was delicious especially the famous onion rings. I can't wait to go back and try their ice cream another time.

Lad B.

Yelp
Holsten's, famous for its delicious homemade ice cream and being in The Sopranos, has been serving the community since 1939. My cheeseburger deluxe was perfectly cooked to order with a great flame broiled flavor. Equally as good were the slightly crunchy krinkle fries. A typical luncheonette style menu offering a nice variety of sandwiches and burgers. The homemade mint chip ice cream was creamy and minty. Homemade whipped cream topped it off. On this first time visit to this iconic luncheonette, I sat at the counter and had one of the best service experiences one can have. Julia was attentive, engaging, pleasant, sweet and polite. It was a true service with a smile type visit. She provided an outstanding service experience. When you cross the threshold of Holsten's Ice Cream Parlor, you might feel as though you stumbled upon a time machine that whisked you back to the 1950s. Old wooden and Glass candy display cases, cozy red vinyl booths, and ice cream counter complete with old-fashioned barstools, Holsten's magically transports you to the quaint and convivial atmosphere of an era long forgotten. It's like taking a step back in time. This is a must visit for not only Soprano fans but for EVERYONE! Just a short 5 minute ride off the GSP exit 151

Sarah C.

Yelp
This was my second visit to Holsten's, and once again, it didn't disappoint. I ordered from their special menu and got the vanilla peanut butter cup ice cream, which tasted amazing. You have the option to dine in or take your items to-go. However, the ordering area can get quite crowded and could benefit from better organization. It's a bit annoying trying to figure out who has already placed an order, and it feels awkward to convey your order while standing directly behind people enjoying their treats at the sit-in counter. Despite this, Holsten's is still a solid ice cream shop.

Angela L.

Yelp
Had vanilla chip ice cream thought it would've been better than it was however it was decent. My friend had one of there specials of the day and mentioned it was very good. Service was good everyone was friendly. This can be a spot to come and eat or just sit and have some ice cream.

Steve A.

Yelp
So now that Holsten's is popular, I can report on its ingredients. Not good. I bet it was all natural once but after seeing this, I'm done here. Average diner food, compromised ice cream quality - not the place I knew as a kid. It's been nice knowing you, but there are better games in town now.

Jill C.

Yelp
This place is an experience! We've been coming here as a family since the 1960s and now it's just tradition. Long before the Sopranos filmed here we were enjoying homemade ice cream, burgers, grilled cheeses, and turkey sandwiches. This is old-school, old vibes, but good food. The service has never been stellar but they do try. If you're in the neighborhood I highly recommend coming. Parking is on the street.

Lorri D.

Yelp
Take a trip to the last and relive your childhood memories of a classic burger and shake joint. Holstens did just that for me and my boyfriend this Sunday. Super busy but friendly service. We ordered cheese burgers deluxe with French fries and onion rings. The burgers were fresh, bread was soft, and cheese was melty. Fries and onions rings were also good. I enjoyed the crispy outer shell and soft mushiness of the inside of the onions rings. Their fresh lemonade was also a HIT. We saw other couples getting sundaes which looked delightful. They also have fresh chocolates and candies they sell in house. I look forward to bringing my neice and nephews here for an affordable outing. We waited quite a while to be greeted and for our food to arrive which is why I'm giving 4 stars but the server was friendly and checked on us after we received our food.

Barry K.

Yelp
Excellent ice cream and fine service in a classic restaurant setting! A favorite of my wife since childhood and then of our daughter's and me!

Yuna C.

Yelp
Visited the famous spot where The Sopranos were filmed for a quick lunch with coworkers. Tried the popular Egg Cream for the first time - it's definitely an interesting taste at first but grows on you! It's seltzer, chocolate syrup, milk - similar to an ice cream float. It's a bit more ish from the seltzer but still sweet. But I really enjoyed the Lemon Fizz - refreshing lemon soda with lemon ice cream! Really citrusy and bright and perfect for a hot summer day. Service was quick and real casual place, where you can get toasted sandwiches, breakfast items, ice cream sundaes and floats, and even homemade chocolates! Overall a fun place to visit!

Ronald K.

Yelp
Did Tony and his family make it out of Holsten's alive? We may never know but get there quick if you want a pic in that infamous Sopranos booth as it was recently auctioned for boo-coo bucks. Wait staff is sooooo friendly and manage somehow to stay thin surrounded by all that ice cream and chocolate! Homemade ice cream, homemade whip cream, homemade chocolates, who could want anything more (and why would anyone wait in line at Rita's across the street is one great mystery).

Anton K.

Yelp
The final scene from the TV series,"The Sopranos" was shot at Holsten's , a traditional ice cream parlor established in 1938. Tony Sopranos is sitting in the middle row third seat eating onion rings waiting for his family to arrive. Journey's hit song "Don't Stop Believing" is playing on the jukebox. An ominous looking man sitting on a counter seat looks over at Tony *James Gandolfini" and goes into the bathroom. The suggestion is that he is preparing his weapon. After his wife and son show up his daughter Meadow comes through the Holsten's front door and the screen goes blank to end the series. I sat in the middle row third seat and no, I did not order onion rings. Hey, I'm as far removed from Tony Sopranos world as is possible. I ordered a banana split ($10) with two large scoops of ice cream. I recently read a poll which rated Holsten's ice cream, the best ice cream in New Jersey. Maybe it isn't the best in the State of New Jersey but it sure was good, All their ice creams are homemade. In fact it was the best coconut ice cream I ever tasted. Every spoonful was loaded with coconut flavor. The other really large scoop was raspberry booth topped with whipped cream and a cherry. I'll be ordering another coconut and raspberry banana split.

Mike G.

Yelp
I'm a big Sopranos fan (shocker) so I decided to come to Holsten's when I was visiting family for Christmas. We arrived just after lunch and there was plenty of seating. We ordered sandwiches which were good and so were the onion rings. The space is vintage and pretty cool even without the Soprano's history. The staff was very friendly and quick to serve. I'll be back!

Kirsten K.

Yelp
Holsten's is a really special place and I am giving it five stars! If you like nostalgia, Americana, friendly service, and fantastic ice cream and chocolate, this is the place to come! Holsten's is retro in the best possible way. It just has this comforting vibe of being from my parents generation. I love that there are no TVs blaring from the walls. I love the classic look of the long ice cream counter with the barstools. The food here is old school and done to perfection, whether it's a tuna melt, BLT, burgers and fries, milkshakes, onion rings. The staff is generally young, bubbly, and cheerful. You can come to sit and eat in the back or you can pick up the homemade chocolate and ice cream from the counter in the front. Parking is a short walk away in a freecpublic parking lot down the hill behind the restaurant.

Kristin W.

Yelp
Smelt soooo good in here! They had a decent amount of items to choose from. Staff wasn't that friendly, I guess because we were on the sopranos tour? They seemed annoyed we came as a group and were in their way? Just my assumption and observation. Anyway this place is iconic and you have to sit in the famous Tony soprano booth!

Cookie M.

Yelp
Let me just start by saying the main reason I came to New Jersey was so I could try this place. That's just how much I wanted to eat here. For any person that has watched the sopranos or just wants to eat a good burger and get some great sundaes, this is the place to eat. The lighting was nice and the pictures of Tony with his wife and son were great. I love the art and how rustic it felt. My only issue was that the service was a bit slow and I didn't feel entirely welcome.

Ed D.

Yelp
Good place to stop for lunch Service very quick and professional Food very good and priced just right. I also had the benefit of watching a bus load of tourists enter the Restaurant to view the Famous Tony table and order ORings and Shakes to go, I was told the tour stops by at lunchtime every Thursday and Saturday.

Patricia G.

Yelp
Quaint store with a small diner in the back. Small town store front frozen in time, featured in the finale of the Sopranos. Food was ok, I think this place is more popular because of its ties to the Sopranos. It could use a little updating, just in a sense that a lot of the furniture and surroundings were worn down. Tables, chairs, walls needed just a little sprucing up. Famous for their ice cream which I thought was pretty good. Fountain soda was really good, coke was super syrupy!

Krista M.

Yelp
Stopped in for a burger and shake after a seton hall men's basketball game. As a sopranos fan it was cool to see where the final scenes were shot. Really good milkshakes, onion rings and burgers. Like stepping back in time - a neat spot that seems to be a local favorite.

Ray B.

Yelp
Had to come to this place while out here in NJ for business. Loved the Sopranos and this location was on my bucket list. Booth where Tony Soprano sat was occupied but still cool to see it. A week later that booth was sold on eBay for 82K so glad I got to see it! Staff was very nice and friendly. Loved the atmosphere and will come again with my fam next time. Burgers and onion rings were good. I think the ice cream here is very good as well. I highly recommend this place if your in the area especially if your a fan of the Sopranos. The screen did not go black on me here like on that last Sopranos episode lol!

Nicholas A.

Yelp
This place hits you with pure nostalgia. The food is amazing. It reminds you of "the spot" from your childhood yet it continues to stay relevant because of the high quality of both the food and ice cream. Try the cinnamon ice cream when it's in season. You'll thank me later.

Vineet S.

Yelp
Not sure why it look so long for us to figure out this place exists. I'm glad we came across this spot a few weeks back, and since then we have been here quite a few times. Holsten's is a classic definition of old school traditional local diners serving the food with love and compassion. We really appreciate and admire the old school nature of the place and how they have maintained the place to keep it close to its roots. They don't have a humungous menu but their menu still covers a lot of ground and food is good and very reasonably priced. Staff is always friendly and willing to go extra mile. We come here specially for their pies, floats and hot chocolate. Definitely a great spot for any occasion

Pam M.

Yelp
I dined here after I was picked up from the airport & liked it so much that we returned 2 days later to repeat our experience! Holsten's was featured in the last episode of The Sopranos, however, their yummy food & ice cream is really what they're famous for. I haven't had a malted milkshake in years & shared a black & white (vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup) with my friend. It was sooooo good. I have no idea how many calories it was but it was worth it. I also had a cheeseburger & it was the perfect size, not too big...,leaving room for...a sundae (which I also shared with my friend). He had a bacon cheeseburger all to himself. We ended up returning 2 days later to repeat the malted milkshake & burger orders again. Sooo yummy! Service is warm & friendly. There's a shared parking lot in the back.

Christine C.

Yelp
Cliffnotes: 1/5 I didn't even have a chance to eat. The service last night was so bad it was a complete turn off. Bad attitudes from the dining room servers, being vaguely acknowledged and ignored. I get places have a bad night but yikes. I visited this place with my mother July 1st at around 1 pm. We were thrilled to come because it had such great reviews and when you step inside it has that nostalgic vibe that's so warming. However, last night must've been a VERY OFF night for them. From the beginning there's no clear distinction between the line to order Togo or for dining in. The place is already small so it's necessary to have someone at least take 30sec to let walk-ins know this. After making it to seating and telling the guests behind us there's a separate line, the senior waiter curtly asked "want a table?", grabbed two menus and tossed it onto the first booth. My mom was agitated by his rude behavior but waited and observed to see if that's just how he was. Guess what... he did it to the next two parties after us...Then after awhile, plopped down at one of the booths near the pos system and talked with his guests. The waitresses both seem to be overworked and overwhelmed by the crowd. The girl with the sparklers had a scowl on her face but it disappeared when talking to a table. Our waitress with the bandana and curly hair with a small waning voice, vaguely acknowledged that she'd be right with us but proceeded to take three tables orders- tables who came in after us- look at our table and walked right passed us! She even made eye contact and said nothing and proceeded to put in there order. No one else in that whole store, not even the sparklers waitress or anyone at the counters at the front bothered to step in and help these ladies with their tables or us/the other guests. I looked around at that dine-in crowd and it seemed as if everyone was waiting for a long time and was just putting up with it. I can't speak for them but that's my observation. Those serving the dining room, truly lacked any type of professionalism and customer service. If you're busy that's understandable but it literally takes no time to say "hey you guys thanks for coming in, it's busy tonight and we're a lil behind but I'll be with you shortly. Thank you for your patience." Not avoiding eye contact after a giving us a "I'll be right with you guys " AS you're walking away. At that point, we got up and left. She saw us get up and leave too and didn't bother to at least glance and look apologetic or tell someone hey they need help. I'm sorry if this comes off as selfish but trust if anyone else was there that evening they might agree the dining room service sucked. I really wanted to try their food, especially their ice cream. Nevertheless, God bless y'all. I'm sure you're good is great since it's so busy but yikes.

Yelp
Hands down THE BEST in town! Came across this gem looking to satisfy and sweet tooth and had so many options to pick from. The inside is very much old school vibes which was my favorite part. Our server was very attentive and friendly, anytime we needed something she appeared right away which was great. Definitely found my new favorite spot.

Yelp
A cute little ice cream shop that will bring you back in time to the early 90s. Maybe even farther back. It has a candy shop and homemade Ice cream, as well as a little diner to get great American food like grilled cheese, burgers, milkshakes. This was also the place that was seen in sopranos and you can sit in their booth if you're a sopranos fan.

Yelp
This review is strictly from the night of 9/12- my Son , GF and myself walked in around 8PM for some ice cream- the place was packed- we had to sit up on the bar. you could tell the Staff was having a rough night- one waitress was even in tears from a previous table. I just came here to say- the food, service and staff is outstanding here- you should tip double- which is exactly what I did tonight and we hope we could help! great job!

Yelp
Really enjoyed getting a milkshake at Holsten's. To be honest I've never seen The Sopranoes so all the references my friends were making didn't weigh into my opinion on this place. But regardless I'm not a huge milkshake person, but their Black and White Milkshake was phenomenal. It was rich and very thick (more of a malted shake), and was served with a generous amount of whipped cream. We weren't super hungry so next time we head there I'll definitely want to try the tuna melt or one of the other menu items, but so far I was pleasantly surprised with the milkshake. I also really enjoyed the old-timey 50's/60's style feel of the restaurant. You just grab a booth or sit at the counter and have a shake or float and enjoy your meal. Definitely recommend giving it a go, even if you're like me and have never watched The Sopranoes.

Yelp
Great place for an old fashioned feel and tasty ice cream. Been coming here for years and it never disappoints. Dine in or grab and go. Be sure to try the summer flavors as well. My fave is PEACH! Did I mention the onion rings? Crispy and delicious for sure. Run, don't walk and be sure to enjoy!

Yelp
This place has the best veggie burger patty I have ever tasted! For real! Better than the meat patty for sure!! We were around the Bloomfield area when I checked the reviews and they were exploding. I'm not a Sopranos fan (IKR) never seen an episode (I know I know) but anyway was still excited to check this place out! This tiny place has got you and your appetite covered. Sweet tooth check, burger check, sandwiches check check. On the first visit we got the Veggie burger and made a deluxe meal of it, the cherry vanilla ice cream soda with coke and my husband ordered the grilled chicken and bacon. The veggie patty was bigger than the bun lol. Very moist, lots of mashed peas, huge meal overall. You just try the cherry vanilla just as is. We loved it so much, with or without coke in the icecream soda. The black cherries were chunky and delicious. The brownie sundae was over in no time. Warm brownie served with icecream. I mean what's not to like. The price is another factor for coming back. I mean give me a place that serves delicious burger patty . Even Junk food chains costs more than $6 these days and serve you the shittiest. Our total bill was not more than $32 for 3 /4 items total. FYI , we went back the next day craving for it again. Tried the onion rings instead of the French fries this time. Loved both, although found the rings a bit oilier than the fries. The other item that I am looking forward to is the orange fizz , sounds interesting. The place has ample of seating area with a grander bar area and sweets to go sale on the other. We parked behind the street restaurants , not sure if it is a valid location to park but nothing happened so. Will be back. Again. And again. And again.

Yelp
I was passin through the hood. Decent diner burger and very friendly service. Orangeade for nostalgic purposes.

Yelp
I was super excited to find out this was the location of the last scene of The Sopranos. I didn't get to sit in the booth, but I was thrilled to be there. We ordered the burger and the steak sandwich; we also got the Royal banana split, which was the store's star.

Yelp
Got first rate old school club sandwich with Cole slaw & onion rings, amazing, a blast to the past! Dining partner got the veggie burger which he enjoyed. Don't change a thing about the food! There are salads available, including one without any protein whatsoever. Keep it as it is! Sandwiches also come with sliced pickles on your sandwich plate. The place is a neighborhood favorite, evidently. And a long time one that predates the final episode of the Sopranos being filmed there. Oh, and the ice cream is good too! It's a nostalgic dining experience.

Yelp
Only a review of the ice cream and service, Not food. -service: excellent. The waitress was one of the most pleasant I have encountered doing her job with a smile on her face and pleasant tone. She graciously said yea and brought us several ice cream flavors to taste before we made our choice. -ice cream: decent variety of flavors. All the flavors we tasted (coconut chip, butter pecan, rum raisin, vanilla, strawberry and black raspberry) were very good. I ended up getting the butter pecan as I had not had an excellent butter pecan in a while. i was happily surprised to taste so many pecans. Definitely look forward to returning and buying a tub of butter pecan :P

Yelp
Went here for a couple of shakes recently and I enjoyed the old school ambiance of the place and the shakes were tasty. Would definitely go back again for more ice cream treats and a burger that was recommended. The service was also very good. The only not so great thing is the pund cake. We ordered it thinking it was made in house but it wasn't. They were prepackaged slices, super dense and not so good. The server toasted the slice, maybe to make it better but it didn't work. Would not recommend this very dense and dry pound cake.

Yelp
Fell in love! I dont know how I've never been!! Found a new place filled with nostalgic charm, delicious desserts, ice cream and food!

Yelp
The old school decor is super cool. Why are there stuffed animals on display throughout the restaurant? We got shakes and onion rings. Everything tasted great. They have booster seats for the booths if you need that.

Yelp
Really nice if you want that old feel almost pharmacy/ 5 and dime vibe.Everything is good not great but a great place to go anytime with anyone It was a crazy night though when Tony got shot, I was in the both right next to him and when we ran out and pauli was in a car right outside the front door. Made me think.

Yelp
Coffee ice cream taste test with my 11-year old nephew. We wisely came here first to set the standard for our day of tasting this flavor. - Taste: Good coffee taste - Texture: Ideal - Service: Great. Quick. Friendly. - Ambiance: Place could use a bit of sprucing up - Price for size: For the quality - worth every penny. Other: When the weather cools, Holsten's will likely put its Manhattan Clam Chowder back on the menu. If it's as I remember, it's excellent. A cup of chowder followed by a cup of ice cream makes a lovely lunch!

Yelp
Don't Stop Believin' people. This place is a North Jersey gem, and an unfortunate landmark for Tony Soprano. Great food, great ice cream but lacking in decor. They could do so much better! The Many Saints of Newark by the way, is pretty amazing follow up/prequel.

Yelp
I will discuss this place's connection with "The Sopranos" later. First though, it deserves to be evaluated for what it has always been and continues to be: A diner-type restaurant that specializes in desserts and confections. On that basis, it gets a 5 rating. My western omelet sandwich and chocolate milkshake float were both outstanding. The onion rings were good, but even though I don't recall ever having onion rings anywhere else in NJ, it's not likely they are "the best in the state." I did learn that, prior to the show appearing in the Sopranos finale, they didn't actually have them on the menu. I went to Holsten's with 3 people who live in NJ and had previous experience with the place. One of the people had been going there since she was a child--close to a half century. She said that they added the onion rings and also expanded the food menu after the show aired. Nonetheless, both before and after that, people who come here for meals are almost always more focused on their desserts than the main courses, especially the ice cream. We also received excellent service, and because we arrived when the place opened, we were able to get the Soprano family booth, and I got the same spot where Tony sat for his "last supper." There were some disconnects between the actual place and what was conveyed in the show that detracted some from the experience. Besides the onion rings not being of the caliber indicated, there was also no jukebox. The Soprano booth does have a selector box, but it is not functional, and that is the only booth where they kept any remnant. I was determined NOT to play "Don't Stop Believing," but aside from the fact that I couldn't actually play anything, that song was not even to be listed. Also, the bells that rang when the door was opened were not there. As I first walked in I was psyched to hear them--they are a prime clue in indicating that Tony is actually dying in the seen. It also turns out that from where Tony was sitting, you don't actually get a clear view of the front door, at least not with the way the place is set up now. It is possible that none of those things actually have changed since the seen was shot there. Maybe the jukebox was already removed by 2007, and maybe the bells never were attached to the back of the door. Maybe the door never was clearly visible from that booth. I was actually only going there because of The Sopranos connection, I would not know of the place otherwise. So those details all were "bubble bursters" to some degree. I don't count any of it against the restaurant, but it did detract from my personal experience to some degree.

Yelp
With a lot of other really good ice cream shops around, I can't say I understand the appeal here. It definitely has a certain old-timey atmosphere, which may attract some, but with mediocre ice cream and subpar service, I don't know that I'd go out of my way to come back. No one came to our table for the first 20-25 minutes we were seated. After we got our ice cream, we didn't really hear from anyone for the rest of our visit until the check came. The ice cream itself was fine - cookies and cream had a lot of cookies in it and the peanut butter sauce was nice and creamy. The wet walnuts left a lot to be desired for, and the vanilla peanut butter cup was underwhelming. If you're a fan of The Sopranos and want to visit for the cultural experience, then it is well worth it, but outside of that, I wouldn't say it's worth the hype.

Yelp
I visited a while ago to see where they shot the Sopranos episode. We decided to get some ice cream only and not the food but the pictures of the food look really good. The ice cream was disappointing because it was so bland, just lacked any flavor. So based on that and the fact that the place was dirty and things were sticky I would not recommend this place. Flies were all around the tables too. Service was not good either and no one seemed to care. As much as I like the old charm and nostalgic feel from this place I'd say that's about all they have going for it. But like I said I haven't eaten the food only the ice cream but not sure it's worth it for a place that doesn't take pride in their business.
