Humble and breathtaking at once, this historic Black burial ground offers a sober and wondrous passage for contemplation and prayer. African American, creole, Caribbean, and other New Orleans cultural practices and beliefs are on view, and should be apprehended with respect and care. The cemetery has a deep history and awesome stories, including the graves of jazz legends like Buddy Bolden. I’m grateful I got to walk the land, and I’m thankful it’s open to the public.
