The Future of Wine Is Looking Bright, According to This Hollywood Industry Expert | Eater LA

"I’m excited by producers like Holus Bolus on the Central Coast — they’re part of a young generation pushing the envelope of what California wine can be with low-intervention approaches." - Paolo Bicchieri

I loved Amy and her beautiful tasty wines. They are light and full of flavor at the same time. Honestly, I think it’s the best winery in this town. I got Roussanne bottle after tasting

This winery's tasting room was a delight to visit! While not spacious, there is indoor and outdoor seating. Amy, one of the two winemakers (the other is her husband Peter) poured for me and explained their viticulture. Other winemakers in the area recommended them to me and I can see why. Highly recommended!

Great wine tasting experience. We’ve been visiting Los Olivos for years and finally decided to give this tasting room a go. We’d been missing out! The wines were some of the best we’ve tried in this region. The sommelier guided us through each wine and gave us a bit of an education.

At the risk of sounding like a wine snob... (which may be true...) over the years I've become more and more passionate about wine, developing my palate and just knowing what I like. My wife and I have visited many places and tried and enjoyed LOTS of wine, but right now there are no wine makers that I'm more passionate about than the folks at Holus Bolus. Let's be honest and to the point... these cats are the tops. They know how to make wine. They (no pun intended) CRUSH it with every varietal I've tried there. When we go tasting, we tend to enjoy the tasting itself and only buy a bottle when one really kicks our ass. I'll never forget my first tasting here... I was almost angry how good everything was because it wasn't a choice... I HAD to buy a bottle of varietal after varietal! I think we left with 6 bottles!!! Not because I wanted to... but because I HAD to! They were THAT good! And it's not just the Holus Bolus label, but also their Joy Fantastic and even the Wine Slut... everything they make is excellent! Some particular favorites over these past few years has been their Grenache (which I call magical unicorn juice because of how good it is), Syrah (which has smokey pipe-tobacco notes that bring me back to visiting "The Newshop" in the 90s), Roussanne, The Joy Fantastic Gamay just to name a few. The price point is on the higher side, which is disappointing, but I guess when you're the best, that has to happen. I would buy a lot more if the price points were a bit lower. The next time you're in Los Olivos, make SURE you put Holus Bolus FIRST on your MUST-VISIT list!!!

I had a great time last month at Holus Bolus. Amy has an exciting winemaking style that showcases the best of what the Santa Rita Hills can be. It was also great to hear about her experiences making wine and plans for the future of her brand.

A group of eight of us came here because one of us had been gifted one of their wines and had liked it so much that they decided we MUST visit them while in Santa Ynez. We were not disappointed! We enjoyed tasting the different offerings they had, and Matt did a great job explaining what we were tasting, and how their wines came to be.

Go here. These wines are fantastic. I have the merch also! I get constant compliments when I wear my wineslut tshirt. These wines are amazing. If you love gamay you have to try this one! Matt is excellent at providing education during your tasting, I have learned so much from him. He really goes above and beyond. You have to go her, you will love it.

Yelp
I go to Los Olivos at least once a year and I'm a club member at Blair Fox, but Holus Bolus next door is quickly becoming one of my fave, go-to spots. I always leave with a few bottles, which are at a fantastic price point for the quality. On a recent ladies' trip, we stopped in to buy some bottles before closing and the tasting room host offered to keep the room open past closing so that we could do a few tastings. They have a super cute, relaxing outdoor patio, too. I love the owners' story of how they started the winery, and although I've never met them on a visit, I feel like I know them based on the stories, hominess and love that you can tell was put into this place. A little off the beaten Los Olivos path, but so worth a stop!

Yelp
I had several recomendations to taste at Holus Bolus so I decided to stop in. From the moment I walked in I really felt unwelcomed. There were some "wine industry" people already there so what I think was the owner was kissing their ass bigtime and seemed iritated that she had other people there. It's cool, I was there to try the wine so I can let that go. The wine wasn't very good, nothing really inspiring. The tasting room had a mildew smell as well. It was the worst tasting experience I've had in a long time. I am in the industry as well but never tell anyone initially because I don't want a fake experience. Would not recommend this place to anyone as I couldn't find one positive.

Yelp
"(Baby knows) - She got the long dark legs (Baby knows) - She got the butt that go round (Baby knows) - This kind of poochie make you beg (Baby knows) - Turn a dog into a hound" -- Prince My favorite song from Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic by Prince. We were next door at Story of Soil's new location when Sunshine recognized my Prince Purple Rain album cover fast mask and said get thee over to Holus Bolus as Amy Christine, MW - the owner of Holus Bolus along with her husband Peter - is a huge Prince fan. Since Sunshine was first person to recognize the mask, and I love meeting fellow Prince fanatics, we made it over for a quick hello and tasting before the scheduled appointment at Roblar. Amy was pouring and like most Prince fans is just a cool, lovely person with great energy. And she makes great wines! I know I've had their juice before at Gjelina, AOC, Providence and/or Lucques but for some reason I have missed coming over to taste here. And with a new vineyard called The Joy Fantastic, that is a mistake I shall not repeat again! We tasted a few wines quickly, had a glass of the lovely cabernet, everything very balanced and expressive of Santa Barbara County. I bought a few bottles of The Joy Fantastic collection and we were on our way. I will be back for a true tasting and definitely pick up some more wines! And have a different Prince face mask too ;-) Highly recommended!

Yelp
Stopped by this tasting room on a Tuesday from a recommendation from a friend. We had our pups with us and sat outside. They are dog friendly..Yipee. The wines were nice and we were able to taste an old vintage Syrah which my fiancé was super pumped out. Great little afternoon spent in Los Olivos

Yelp
Came to Holus Bolus for our anniversary weekend. (Memorial Day weekend/Sunday). Our friends joined us as we all love wine. We've been to many wineries and love the small wineries in Los Olivos. This was our last tasting before heading home. We happen to love the family owned wineries. And read/heard good things about Holus Bolus. The four of us arrived and were "sort of" welcomed. We had a reservation. We walked in and we checked in. Lovely blond lady says hello. We said have a reservation. She said "oh ok." (As if she didn't realize). Sat us outside. Very quickly gave us a run down of the business. Very quick. We were intrigued and wanted more of a background of the wine and story behind it all. She pouted our first glass, talked for about 20 seconds and left. We waited and waited for the second wine. I looked inside and she was talking to friends who had come to visit. (They walked in at the same time we arrived). Another 15 minutes go by, she comes back with the next wine, again, a quick 10 second talk about the wine, left again. This was how the entire tasting went. I think we saw her for a total of 2 minutes, with 4 or 5 different wines. There was no care for us, none, everything was rushed. The friends inside were more important. It was a terrible feeling and honestly, quite rude. I even asked about the wine label and why the octopus, as I was very interested. A very quick 10 second response and poof, gone again. Not to mention she spoke very quickly (which is ok), but when you are feeling rushed the entire time and we were not a focus whatsoever, it was very bothersome. It was a terrible experience. We were beyond disappointed and not a positive way to finish off an anniversary weekend. Do not recommend.

Yelp
The wines were good and at a more approachable price point than other local tasting rooms. They do not comp wine tastings for wine purchased, FYI, which is pretty rare for Los Olivos. Nearly all tasting roooms comp a tasting when you buy several bottles. The host was almost laughably unhelpful and either uninformed or just plain refusing to relay info on the wines, even when we asked. I didn't let her service stop me from buying a couple of tasty bottles, but I won't be rushing back to visit again and we definitely wouldn't join as a club member. There are just so many other tasting rooms with amazing wine and a great vibe literally a few feet away.

Yelp
Fantastic wines for an incredibly affordable price. These wines beat out wines twice their price easily. The space is cozy and there's quite a bit of outdoor seating compared to indoor seating. You just can't ask for better wine to price ratio. The wines are just phenomenal from white to red.

Yelp
For me, wine tasting is as much about the experience as the wine itself. Tasting good wine can be ruined by the tasting room staff attitude. Unfortunately this is what happened at Holus Bolus. The kid running the tastings had an attitude that was very off putting. Very stuck up and full of himself. We felt like he needed to chill and make the experience more fun. Unfortunately we also weren't crazy about the wine. The two whites were good but the gamay was a white pepper bomb that killed my pallet for the Syrah.

Yelp
Went to this winery today on a recommendation from another winery in Los Olivos. I am so glad we decided to try their wines today. There was not a bad one on this list and will definitely be back!

Dori B.

Yelp
A hidden gem in Los Olivos. Ask any tasting room where they would go and this rec comes up every time. Left with a bottle and will definitely return next visit.

Yelp
Great wine, great stories, lovely atmosphere, and friendly/knowledgeable owner/wine maker. I'll be back for sure!

Yelp
Probably our favorite Los Olivos tasting room and certainly top two with Brewer-Clifton. Newer, less established vineyard hustling to establish itself in the Santa Rita Hills wine scene. Holus Bolus apparently means "all at once" and the octopus logo signifies the two founders arms and legs (eight "tentacles" combined) trying to do everything at once. We did not get to meet the locally famous Amy on our visit and some of the other shops had said she simply knows everything about wine. Their branding strategy is somewhat confusing: Holus Bolus, Joy Fantastic, and Made by Peter and Amy seem to be their three brands -- they should tighten that up. But their wine is very good, particularly their high-end pinot noir and the syrah from Presqu'ile. Overall, a fun tasting with a quirky bent (e.g., the purple doll man), and some great wine. At challenger prices, I might add, so a real value.

Yelp
What makes wine tasting great is when you have good vibes and great wine. Holus Bolus/The Joy Fantastic hits it out of the park on both. Amy and her husband Peter not only make amazing wine (the Joy Fantastic Pinot Noir is a home run) but they also make you feel like you're drinking wine with your close friends. The story behind each of their wines is interesting and the place has an overall chill vibe (Added bonus: they also have a really cute puppy). I highly recommend this place and we'll be seeing them again every time we make it back to Los Olivos.

Yelp
A friend suggested we try Holus Bolus and we are so glad we did. Amy and Peter produce some amazing wines and their labor of love and the passion they have for wines comes through in everything they make. Do yourself a favor and stop in when you're near Los Olivos.

Yelp
If you are looking for an authentic and exquisite wine tasting experience in Los Olivos, Holus Bolus/The Joy Fantastic is where you need to be. The owners and winemakers Amy and Peter are not only masters of the craft, but also lovely, down to earth people. We stopped for several other tastings in the area but this stood out as not only the best wines, but the only place in town where the winemakers were on site, pouring wine, and sharing their passion with customers.

Yelp
Owners/winemakers were both present in a busy Saturday and were incredible hosts. We ended up joining the club end have been impressed with their down to earthness and great communication so far!

Yelp
Holus Bolus/The Joy Fantastic. This is a producer you need to know and love. Think you can't be surprised by old school varietals? Think again. This husband and wife team does MAGIC with the small acreage they own. If you're looking for incredible hospitality, impeccable wines, and better than reasonable prices for the quality - this is where you belong. Tell your friends. Truly incredible wines on the edge of town. Well worth your while if you have taste buds. Cannot say enough good about this tasting room and our experience. We'll be back ASAP

Yelp
Found this great little winery through the recommendation from another one. Amy was a fantastic host and she and her husband are the wine makers! Had a great time at their tasting room in Los Olivos, a bit hidden but highly recommended. She very friendly and the wines taste great! Left with 2 bottles to share with friends back home.
