Holy Carrot - Review - Notting Hill - London - The Infatuation

"Portobello Road has always been painted as a little bit bohemian, but right in the middle there’s a handful of burger chains as well an intergalactic-looking restaurant on the corner. That place is Holy Carrot. So much about this vegan restaurant is intended to make you turn your head. There are smooth lines and silver furniture, cocktails are supplied by A Bar With Shapes For A Name, and when we visited, the menu had no less than three mentions of the word ‘crema’. Micro-influencers recline against the curved walls, while the rest of the clientele feels like the segment of the Notting Hill set who are really into bangles. Surfer-vibe, jewellery-clad servers will enthusiastically serve you grilled watermelon and cucumber—a wealthy adult’s version of a child’s fruit salad, for all intents and purposes—and a plate of celeriac schnitzel arrives looking like a flower bed. It’s all one-note and fine. Heavy on vinegar or light on togarashi. And the matcha tiramisu, although satisfying and notably made with Holy Carrot’s leftover coffee grinds, is just not a tiramisu. Come for a cocktail or a snack or two. It feels like you’re eating on Virgin Galactic, now. Food Rundown Grilled Watermelon, Cucumber, Seaweed, Togarashi An adult fruit salad, for all intents and purposes. Not as sweet as a can made by the man from Del Monte but, equally, not as good either. This is a refreshing bowl of cubed watermelon with a smattering of togarashi and salty dressing at the bottom. There’s not much to it. photo credit: Jake Missing Crispy Celeriac, Pickle Butter Is that a miniature meadow of wild flowers? Or are those two slightly odd discs of celeriac schnitzel with a load of leftovers from the florist thrown over them? More so the latter. This isn’t a bad plate of food but it’s a bit of an odd one. The schnitzel is fine and the pickle sauce is just whizzed vinegaryness. photo credit: Jake Missing" - Jake Missing

I had a good experience at Holy Carrot London overall. The food had a nice combination of herbs and spices, and the texture of the vegetables was really well done. Presentation-wise, everything looked beautiful, though I did feel that the dishes were a bit too oily—more than necessary in some cases. The price is definitely on the higher end, but I think it's worth the experience, as you can tell there's a lot of work and intention behind each plate. I especially loved their creative use of whole vegetables and commitment to zero-waste cooking, like incorporating watermelon rind into a dish. The location is easy to access, right in the heart of Portobello Market, and the restaurant has a lovely ambiance—modern, stylish, with a beautiful open kitchen that adds to the atmosphere. The only downside for me was the service. Food came out quite slowly, and with only three staff members running the floor, we ended up waiting a long time for the bill. I also felt that the servers could be more mindful in how they communicate with customers—some wording came across a bit impolite in certain moments.

Gotta say I think this place is overhyped, we weren’t too impressed by the server…when we asked him to explain the menu he said “what exactly” then when we asked okay so do you have any recommendations he said “yes” when we said which are? He wasn’t really sure heard us speaking our mother tongue and he tried to make a joke back in our language but he said it “so you want to eat? Then order” we weren’t impressed, food took over an hour to arrive…before we ordered desert the bill was one the table…it was a birthday and we wanted desert to celebrate but it’s okay the bartender sent a complimentary birthday cocktail…it was okay and oh as seen in the picture attached plates were stacked on the table for 15 minutes many servers passed by since we’re sitting right next to the pass but no one cleared the table, only time things were cleared is when the bartender came and said i just need those empty glasses…oh well overall bad experience. Food can be good sure, but what makes you appreciate a place isn’t just the food, it’s the hospitality, the atmosphere, and how welcomed you feel.

This vegetarian restaurant has a very elegant atmosphere and special culinary offerings. I tried the baked potatoes and mushrooms again (this is my third time here). They were really good, although both were in smaller portions than previous experiences. The soundtrack, while pleasant, was overwhelmingly loud.

The dishes had sophisticated, delicate and exquisite tastes, each one in a different way. The cheeses felt just like real cheese! The service was friendly, pleasant and quick. I definitely recommend this restaurant as a high end vegan cuisine experience in London!

Really surprised with how delicious this was. Quite fat-heavy as others have noted, but the quality of the food and diversity of flavors was absolutely brilliant. As an American and 10 year+ vegan I have different expectations for plant-based restaurants (would have preferred ONE high-protein dish, the “tempeh” was sadly a literal sprinkle of shavings like is common in Germany, for instance) but the dishes were so flavorful and varied being all vegetable-based I’ll definitely come back on my next trip to London. Highly recommend in general, as a date spot, or for a special occasion. Well worth the price.

Simply fantastic! Every dish was full of flavour and perfectly presented. We loved everything wine list and décor included. The service could be a little bit more attentive, but overall we had a great night, see you soon!

We booked here for a vegan friend's birthday. This seemingly simple spot is not so simple. Every single dish had a complex flavour and was prepared in such a unique way. As a non-vegan, they have redefined the way I look at vegan food. We certainly did not leave hungry and every bite was a party in my mouth. As for the service, I simply must give Gabriel all the kudos. He made our experience extra special. We weren't sure what we wanted to order so we asked him "give us your best, and enough for everyone." He did not disappoint. He was charismatic, attentive and so welcoming. Whatever he is paid, he deserves double, a star employee! Thank you for making my friend's birthday so special!

The ragout and bread were delicious as a starter. I loved the crispy bottom to the bread. The mushroom, white bean cassoulet was stunning it had really great and interesting flavours The “schnitzel” I have to agree with other reviews is too oily and feels too fatty, the capers and leek build a nice contrast but it still doesn’t save the dish for me. The matcha Tiramisu was interesting I would have liked more amaretto the bitterness and depth of the matcha flavour made for a great coffee/ cacao replacement. Overall it was good food but do I think it’s overhyped for the flavours in the dishes we ordered and its price? Maybe a little.. I would give holy carrot a second chance and test out more bits on the menu. The service was okay, but just that and personally would have loved more friendliness and conversation. Big plus point was the interior which was beautiful especially the lighting.
