Holy Matcha Joins the Mix at East Village’s Park 12 - Eater San Diego

"Holy Matcha is expanding to East Village's Park 12, offering traditional Japanese tea and specialty matcha drinks. The new location will feature a core menu and exclusive handmade beverages, as well as green tea flavored vegan doughnuts and soft-serve. The design will be minimalist, inspired by travels to Japan and Paris." - Candice Woo

Google
Great little spot for some brunch and Matcha. The drinks menu is really extensive and has a lot of options. The staff were really friendly and knew their stuff, couldn’t do enough for us. Worth a visit for sure.

Google
Instagram-Esque matcha cafe from the floral wall to the drinks. Ingredients are good quality, they have ceremonial grade matcha and is whisked in front of you. I ordered the strawberry matcha which is: strawberry purée (no added sugars or cream), matcha and agave. You can customize. There is only one person making the matcha which could take a while if you are ordering with a group. I didn't get his name, but the barista/cashier who made our drinks was the friendliest. Allowed me to customize and made us feel welcomed! I would give a 5 stars and return just for him. Location is downtown so it can be tricky if you are driving and parking !

Google
Very cute and cozy, and was a quiet space to have some good tea. Their menu is limited, with different matcha drinks and dairy-free milks only, plus a few foods like avocado toast. Everything was excellent and the woman working was really nice - it was a really bad morning and I just wanted somewhere to sit and breathe, and this was the perfect atmosphere for that, plus the latte was top notch.

Google
Great “coffee shop” or matcha shop for Instagram pictures. It has amazing decor. So beautiful and picturesque. There is a pink flower mural which looks stunning. The matcha latte though is super dilute and did not taste good at all. I also ordered the chia with berries and that tasted bland too. Honestly the 3 stars is only for the decoration , the ambiance and nothing else. They do sell merchandise as well.

Google
This place is SO cute! And honestly the strawberry rose matcha late I got was absolutely amazing. My only complaint was that I came in from out of town, specifically for their gluten free donuts for breakfast. But apparently they don’t have them anymore and haven’t for months. I wish that had been mentioned anywhere before hand. And I was pretty disappointed to learn that they weren’t there. But the matcha was still worth it.

Google
Second time trying holy matcha and this time really exceed my expectations. Good quality of all ingredients. The place is really beautiful and clean. The employee was very nice !

Google
Really good product. It was on our list of new things to try in SD (we are from CO, but come to SD often). This was the FIRST PLACE we went...getting off the plane because of the rave from our youtuber friends. Would have given it five stars but we had to drive to this location because we waited until 9:09am at the university loc. and there were no signs of life, but experiencing the actual product at the second location was a delicious experience. We had the heavenly matcha, holy matcha, dirty, and coconut. They were delicious.

Google
If you love Matcha, then you HAVE to try Holy matcha. Honestly they do it RIGHT! Unlike many others who serve only “presweetened” matcha this shop gives you only the BEST and purest! I had the Original Latte with almond milk unsweetened. I was tempted to try the ceremonial straight. I’ll be doing that soon! Give this ADORABLE place a look!

Yelp
A small shop that is nicely decorated in the inside that is great for photos. I actually came here a year ago as well so now this is my second time. Ive tried the strawberry match and what I believe is called Holiest of Holy? (Pictured below. The strawberry match was very good. Got it with some agave so it had a good sweet flavor to it and the matcha tasted amazing. I usually a packet of matcha from costco and the taste difference is big when having fresh matcha. The holiest of holy was a mixture of many different things including ashwaganda and definitely tasted different. It wasgood as well but I would prefer a normal matcha. The service was great for the store. When I came in its only one person at the counter and the person was always helpful with any question regarding what some ingredients are in the drinks. This places menu has a good selection as well!

Yelp
My drink lowkey just tasted like oat milk but I would come back to try something else.

Yelp
Really disappointed for a place with Matcha in the name. I visited on a weekday morning and there wasn't a line. Parking is kind of challenging so unless you're in the area and walking, plan for extra time to park. The service was great, very friendly and knowledgeable. The matcha was disappointing. A matcha should be a deep green, not light green. The oat milk they use is not good quality either, it's very watery and not creamy at all. There are only two brands of oat milk that are good: Oatly and Califia. The inside is quite pretty but not very warm or welcoming. I wouldn't hang out here. I love the pink everywhere. No hard feelings against the business. I just wish the matcha was better. The pictures do not match what you actually get. A pastel green is not a quality matcha latte, I couldn't even taste the matcha.

Yelp
I love coming here for matcha. The toasts can use a little work - portion is small and the bread didn't seem fresh, also lacked seasoning. But the Matcha makes up for it. I always recommend to anyone who loves matcha.

Yelp
I visited on a Saturday morning, an hour after their posted opening time - on both their website and on Google - and they were closed. No signs, no one in sight. It was annoying because I had gone out of my way to visit because I heard it was one of the best in the city. I even checked their socials to check if they had posted about it in any way, which they had not. Very irresponsible.

Yelp
Instagram-Esque matcha cafe from the floral wall to the drinks. Ingredients are good quality, they have ceremonial grade matcha as an option and their strawberry purée is made from just strawberries itself ( no added sugars or cream). You can adjust sweetness level upon ordering.

Yelp
Very cute inside. The drink was small and not worth $6 at all. I got the lavender matcha latte with almond milk. It tasted like almond milk with an aftertaste of matcha. I didn't taste the lavender at all. Staff was friendly enough and service was quick.

Yelp
Holy matcha, this place is photogenic! The decor is cute and trendy with lots of pink and plants. This would be a great spot to sit and chat with friends. It might be alright to study at but I didn't spot any outlets when I quickly perused the space. The only staff member I saw when I came on a weekday afternoon was super sweet and friendly. When I wasn't sure what to order, she offered to make me a combination of two of their popular drinks: the horchata matcha latte and the strawberry matcha latte. The drink was smaller than I expected and more expensive than I expected (almost $9 when I thought each drink was $8, not sure if there was an upcharge for the combined drink she offered me). The drink was tasty, having a stronger horchata flavor with a hint of strawberry and less matcha coming through. The staff member kindly let me know that if I wanted any adjustment to the sweetness, she would happily add some more agave to my drink, but it was just right. Located at the edge of the center of North Park, Holy Matcha is walking distance to many cute shops and restaurants. Parking isn't the easiest in that area but I quickly found street parking a couple blocks away on a weekday around 5:30pm. I'm not in a hurry to return, but I'd certainly recommend Holy Matcha for an adorable matcha drink, and a great variety of matcha drinks, in a picturesque cafe. The greatest drawback to me was the lack of matcha flavor in my pricey horchata & strawberry matcha latte.

Yelp
I am by no means a matcha connoisseur... but I am really disappointed to be writing this review! The shop is super cute, of course, small yet very Instagram worthy, but the drink absolutely did not live up to the hype. The girl behind the counter wasn't particularly excited to be there but she seemed really bored. I ordered a strawberry matcha with oat milk. It was beautiful! (See picture) but that was about where the good ends for this. Once I mixed the drink and tasted it, I was disappointed. It truly tasted like water! Barely any matcha taste at all, the strawberry mostly gone, too. I'd expect a bit watery of a texture/taste with almond milk but hoped with oat milk it would be creamier. Maybe I should have gone with coconut milk, but I am not convinced it would have made it taste any better. Really would rather just drink water! And for $7!! I actually ended up tossing the drink out on my walk home after finishing barely half of it, which is not something I'd usually ever do. I'd much prefer to get a matcha latte at Achilles or maybe even Starbucks and pay less than I did here. Maybe I'm just not as well versed in matcha as the other reviewers or got a bad drink, but I probably won't be back.

Yelp
Cute Instagram-my cafe with beautiful matcha themed decor and fabulous matcha drinks to choose from. I ordered the starwberry/rose matcha latte and got it hot. It tasted delicious and was well worth the price I paid for it. My drink came with 'oh matcha' dusted on top which I thought was adorable! They also had beautiful decor and spots that could be good for Instagram pictures.

Yelp
OG matcha was a little bitter and watered down matcha. Loved the ambiance and the cute pink flower decor! Service was also great. There was one person working at the counter and she was able to make the matcha in no time. It was a perfect beverage on a cold/rainy day

Yelp
9:30 AM Friday. Not busy. Great service and atmosphere. Worker very knowledgeable about matcha. I tried the ceremonial matcha which was prepared the traditional way with a whisk. And yes it makes a difference. I got the pure matcha without anything added. Tastes a lot better than the regular matcha I've purchased from Costco. It has a more pleasant flavor and less bitterness. I've you've had lower quality matcha you know it can be bitter and have a "strong" flavor. This ceremonial matcha was entirely different. This location does not sell the matcha for home use but the stores web site offers it. This high quality matcha doesn't need sugar or milk to make it enjoyable. It has a friendly easy flavor and it makes you feel good.

Yelp
Best matcha place in San Diego! Women owned local business. Everyone's super nice and everything is so good!

Yelp
Holy Matcha is a sanctuary for your cup of matcha caffeine. The space is absolutely gorgeous with plenty of seating on a platform terrazzo again the wall. So cute!

Yelp
I'm a big matcha girly so this place made me so happy. I've also been to the North Park location which is their main one and it was a great experience. At the North Park one I tried the rose matcha latte and loved it, but this location wasn't offering it. I got the regular hot matcha with oat milk and my partner got the lavender matcha. It was a comforting and satisfying cup of matcha. I didn't like the lavender as much. The interior design of both locations are amazing and I loved the stadium style seating here. Everything is so cute and aesthetic. The worker here was so kind and chatted with us about the store's owner and history. Love supporting women owned businesses! This is a must visit every time I'm in SD!

Yelp
Delicious matcha!! I added sweetener as I like my matcha on the sweeter side! Such a pretty aesthetic and vibe!! Love love love the pink flowers The server had major RBF tho quite intimidating, took it from a 5 star rating to a 4 star. Did not feel welcoming at all.
google avatar

KayAnna A.

Yelp
Great aesthetics as always! Smaller than the original location but just as pleasing to be in. This location is less crowded typically during the week so it's a great place to try options and meet up with friends. The only downside is this location is usually out of more items than the original. Drinks and food are just as good though! Parking is easy on a weekday and it's convenient to walk to from Petco Park. Great place for photos as well

Yelp
10/10 matcha spot Save yourself the trouble, don't read the rest of my review just come here! But if you do want to keep reading well; This is the second (smaller & newer location) of Holy Matcha. The first thing I did when we woke up this morning was go have a matcha and this place is amazing at what they do. The matcha was amazing, I talked to Mason who was in charge of running the store this shift and he said the owner actually imports matcha straight from japan and is some of the best quality of matcha there is. Mason had nothing but positive things to say about the owner of the store and I really admired the aesthetic of the shop which was designed by the owner as well. Beautiful place to grab a quick bite and a matcha to go, there is seating but it's a really small shop and kinda limited. The first location which is on university ave, is more of the sit down type of location with a few more things to offer on the menu. I really had a pleasant experience here, the matcha was great for the price, and I also enjoyed a chai pudding which was very simple with blue berries. I will definitely be back here the next time I come to San Diego and hopefully have an opportunity to meet and chat with the owner.

Yelp
Really good matcha in East Village. Super quaint, cute little spot. Aesthetic vibes. The street parking does suck and it's almost impossible to find a good spot. We really loved the lavender matcha and coconut matcha. Comes unsweetened, so make sure you ask for sweetened if you like sweeter matcha drinks. :)

Yelp
Cold drinks always help make your day better when it's hot out Today we went to Holy Matcha to grab some refreshing drinks. We ordered the Ceremonial Matcha as well as the Strawberry Lemonade. Personally I really like matcha but the ceremonial matcha was too much for me. It wasn't bitter but I would say it was strong. Just letting you guys know what to expect from it. On top of serving good drinks, their aesthetic is beautiful! It's such a prefect place to visit if you want killer photos!

K L.

Yelp
Seems to be permanently closed? We went last weekend and it wasn't open during their business hours and the place was void of everything. We drew the conclusion that they are no longer doing business there. Not sure if other locations are open, but the business near Petco Park see seems to be gone. Sad.
google avatar

Samantha F.

Yelp
So cute. Matcha was perfect and service was quick. Loved the ambiance. It's a small shop. The one on university is bigger.
google avatar

Angelina V.

Yelp
Cute place. Definitely a trendy spot for your social media posts. Staff was very friendly. Parking was a bit of a pain. Had to circle around a few times to find street parking. I ordered the lavender matcha and the almond butter toast. Thought the drink was good and the toast was ok. (Bit over priced) I was told the location in North Park was a bigger and had more food options. (Will check that one out when I visit again)

Yelp
I'm a huge matcha fan, so of course I had to try this place. When my family and I first walked in, first impression - "Wow, this place is gorgeous!" Pink and flower decor everywhere (a very hip, Instagrammable place for sure, lol.) My husband ordered the "OG Latte" and I decided to try the "Holy Matcha" under the Apaptogenic section (the employee at the front talked me into it:) ). Both were very good! We also tried the avocado toast, and it was one of the best we've had. It has a good spice to it and the bread they use is so yummy! I forgot what it was called. There was only one lady working the front, but she was so sweet and helpful! Definitely a great experience, and next time we visit SD - we'll be back to try others on the menu!
google avatar

Fion L.

Yelp
I was attracted to this cafe due to the cute interior which is very photo worthy. The rating is just on the drink I ordered which was a strawberry matcha latte. It was extremely watered down matcha which lacked any flavor of a matcha & strawberry. The price itself was quite high & it's not something I would return back for.

Yelp
Super cute cafe in downtown SD across from Petco Park. If you got a hankering for matcha, Holy Matcha's got you! I got a best friend that lives in the building that this place is in and I have to say she is SO lucky to get to leave her home and come downstairs to Holy Matcha. She highly recommended this spot and I was not disappointed. Their drinks are delicious! I have never heard of a horchata matcha before. Mixed in with strawberries! So refreshing! They also have other items on their menu including beautiful looking donuts! The young lady at the front is super friendly and helpful!! My friend spoke very highly of her frequent encounters with her! So much so, I think she deserves a Yelp review all by herself! Ha!

Yelp
We went in at 9am, right when the cafe opened. Looked as if the barista had just gotten there as well. She told us to wait until her machines warm up. (Huh?) not a big deal but she didn't have ice for the iced matcha lattes we ordered... And it was a hot morning. The inside of the cafe was also really hot. Didn't seem like the air conditioner was in where it was cooler outside. She told us that she added extra matcha powder since she couldn't offer ice with our iced matcha lattes. Clearly she doesn't know how matcha works bc now the lattes were too bitter and undrinkable... Confused bc if a shop opens at 9am, shouldn't you get there early to set up shop, make sure the cafe is cool and ensure you have ice? Would not recommend this place. And based off the other reviews, looks like others had issues with no ice.
google avatar

Gretchen S.

Yelp
Super cute & aesthetically pleasing!! Loved the fact that everything here pretty much is lactose free! The matcha horchata is made with almond milk standard, not too sweet with subtle horchata. Also got the matcha chia pudding with strawberries and blueberries, and it was just a hint of matcha that balanced so well with the fruits! Wish they had a location in the Bay Area!
google avatar

Jack M.

Yelp
This location just open d in East Village across Petco Park. It's a small location with trendy seating. I had the Matcha Latte with oat milk and a touch of agave for $6 and some change after taxes. The latte was well balanced between with a little hint of sweet upfront and a touch of bitterness towards the end. It was quite good and looked very nice. There's definitely some good photo ops here. Monroe suggested I try the latte with oat milk which was a first for me and a great choice. It was very tasty and it offered a good viscosity to thicken the latte. One thing for next time would be to ask them not to go so heavy with the ice. Good service.

Yelp
Very VERY cute shop. So many Instagram worthy spots to take pictures. I went at about 1 o'clock on a Wednesday afternoon and it was pretty dead in there. I was able to walk up straight to the counter and order my drink. It was my first time here so i wasn't sure what to expect. Their menu is taped on the counter so i took a second to read it and decided on the strawberry match latte (iced). The girl behind the counter didn't say much, but i don't mind that. She was nice enough. She took my order and payment and started making my drink. Received my drink and took a walk outside. The drink isn't something to write home about. The strawberry flavor isn't strong, which is probably a good thing as to not over power the matcha. On the plus side, the match is blended well so it's not like the teas you make at home (tbh, when i make mine at home, it always comes out clumpy lol). The flavor was lacking for me - not sure if that's my preference or if others feel the same. Overall, it's a cute little shop and I'll be going back as an afternoon pick me up to see if there is anything on the menu that peaks my interest. Come for the aesthetic, and be prepared to return a few times to figure out your favorite drink.
google avatar

Aida K.

Yelp
Very cute matcha cafe. I got an iced matcha which was delish. Got a vegan matcha donut - was not a huge fan of this one. Also picked up a cool long sleeve. If I could suggest one thing if this was my matcha shop, I would make the merch available / shoppable online. I think they're missing out on a lot of sales by only keeping it exclusive to the store or by purchasing via DM on Instagram. But they usually have really cute designs and I'm sure lots of people would love to be able to buy it.

Yelp
Matcha, matcha man... Holy Matcha! First off, this place is absolutely adorable! It's one of those places that is so aesthetically pleasing, that you just want to sit there enjoying your drink. Located right outside of Petco Park, parking is impossible. Holy much I had been on my list of places to check out, so I was determined to find a place to park no matter what. I'm really glad that I did. Fresh fruit? Yes! You can have it in anything and everything that they make. Oat milk? Yes! You can have it in anything and everything that they make Vegan? They've got you covered. Just wanting a Matcha? Yes! They've got you covered. My Matcha drink was perfectly blended, and they did not add in a ton of unnecessary ice to fill the cup. There definitely is a true technique to being able to properly blend Matcha, and have the drink come out not only well blended, but tasty as well. The staff is super sweet and very helpful. You don't want to miss out on getting your Matcha on at Holy Matcha! Diners tip-definitely go mid morning for easier parking

Yelp
Fuck the bitch that was opening. My friend and I arrived at 9 am which was when they opened but the girl inside would not let us in. We made it known we were there and it was also rainy/windy. That was terrible customer service and shame on her for knowing we were out there and just letting us stay. Sure ur opening but you could've just let us wait inside instead of freezing our asses off ?!!! Never coming back here again.
google avatar

Carla Y.

Yelp
The cutest little place I've ever been! Hands down one of the best matcha's I've ever had. Till this day I dream about it.
google avatar

Taylor S.

Yelp
You can tell the love that was put in this place.. amazing but would like to have more options of food and the matcha was not my type of matcha I love matcha with a little bit of sugar :) but cute place

Fernanda S.

Yelp
This place is very cute! But the matcha I got was the strawberry matcha drink and it wasn't very good. I love sweet matcha and this is very watered down and not very sweet. Kinda disappointed :(
google avatar

Regina Phylicia R.

Yelp
The shop is incredibly clean and the cutest cafe ive been to so far! they didnt' have any pastries when we came in at 9 and they ran out of horchata for the horchata matcha latte. so we ordered lavender matcha latte and pumpkin matcha latte. i know they only had two milk choices at the time (couldn't remember if it was oat, almond, or soy) While we waited, we took so many pix of the interior. Merch is on the left side of the cashier counter. service is frienldy! No cash, card only! the lavender latte is very floral, almost soapy. the matcha did bring it down to have an earthy taste of the matcha. there were some clumps of the matcha when you get to the end. the pumpkin latte is good, but we had it sit too long as we walked around for pastries, so the flavor separated and got more matcha chunks. tasty and unique, so probably best to sit and enjoy the drink in the lovely cafe!
google avatar

Reesa A.

Yelp
I truly loved my first experience at Holy Matcha and i will definitely be back! I got a little bit of everything to try: OG matcha latte with oat milk (sweetened with agave) some vegan donuts and avocado toasts! It was such a great spread and the donuts and avocado toast were soooo delicious. Service was awesome, she was really helpful and gave me options (i don't drink matcha often so i had lots of questions haha). The cafe itself is cute and small and very ig worthy if you want some pics there!
google avatar

Ashley G.

Yelp
I liked my drink, I got the lavender matcha with Almond milk. I wish I could have tried the other drinks. My friend didn't like her drink. I just know she didn't like the coconut milk. She said it was coconut milk tasted oily. The drink cups were really small for the price. I wanted more.

Leia M.

Yelp
loved the aesthetic, taste, and didn't mind the price because quality was delicious. $15 (with tip) for our two 12 oz drinks! pretty standard these days, at least i think. we also were able to find street parking right in front immediately, but that might have been because we visited on a wednesday around 11am. the only reason for 3/5 stars: when we order our drinks iced we were told it would be cold but they didn't have ice available? could've been a one off thing, but still thought it was a bit odd. our drinks did come chilled and tasted pretty good still. the worker, still standardly friendly, had her airpods in, and the air pod case charging by the card reader. we didn't receive attitude or any rude behavior at all, but she just looked like she didn't wanna be there. i get it tho, work is work, and i don't always expect above and beyond service, i just felt sad for her. other than that, the place is super cute, had a bathroom available, great product with a pretty extensive menu, and an easy quick stop!

Shannon V.

Yelp
Drink was way too sweet and almond butter bread was blah. I feel both items were overpriced for what they are. It was dead when I went in, with a single girl working. The girl was super friendly and the esthetics is really cute but not somewhere I'd go again.
google avatar

Brian P.

Yelp
Loved the matcha, the atmosphere, and Mason had awesome knowledge of the drinks and was great to talk to. Highly recommend:)
google avatar

Jalen R.

Yelp
Mason was amazing! Loved his customer service, I will be coming back for sure! Great for content on your IG

Yelp
Loved the strawberry matcha with almond milk and strawberry toast. Mason was amazing and really friendly. Fantastic service and the atmosphere was fun, bright and calming.

Yelp
Drove down to SD from OC for a staycation with a girl friend and wanted to stop by to check it out. 5 minute walking distance from our hotel so we said why not! The girl working there was SUPER friendly, I wish I got her name. She was very informative and even offered to take our pictures. Just super sweet. We both got the horchata Matcha iced drink and it was YUMMY. we both loved it and I would definitely go back!
google avatar

Bec R.

Yelp
Good but I've had better ! I want to try the strawberry matcha next time - maybe that's my drink . I've had the lavender matcha , dirty matcha and regular matcha so far. None of them have wowed me yet but I'm determined to trying until I find what I love .

Amanda R.

Yelp
Very aesthetic and clean, good for photos/social media. The idea of matcha-only is clever and enticing but the drinks were maybe too strong for your average civilian. The strawberry matcha was even bitter. I'd go for hot drinks next time.

Mary Ann N.

Yelp
Matcha not very good. I would not go back. Y pop u only have one main product and when you aren't the best at it that's a shame.

Vianey G.

Yelp
I could see that the barista had her hands DIRTY and I decided not to order. The place smelled terribly. I left disappointed.
