I recently took the six-week Culinary Boot Camp for Beginner Cooks at Home Cooking New York and couldn’t recommend it more. With just ten people in the class, we got plenty of personal attention from Chef John, who made learning approachable, fun, and informative. Each class focused on a different topic — from chicken to pasta — and we not only learned essential techniques but also enjoyed a (very) full meal after. Chef John welcomed all our questions and made the kitchen feel way less intimidating. A fantastic experience that's absolutely worth the time and investment! (My few photos — ricotta gnocchi with pesto, pappardelle with meat sauce, beef bourguignon with mashed potatoes, and pan-roasted chicken — do not do it justice.)

Fantastic night! We cooked a delicious French meal with Chef Al and learned essential techniques along the way that we can apply to any cuisine! So many other interesting students there too. What a great way to spend a night. Truly felt like we were traveling the world and living life to the fullest! BYOB :D

I took Bootcamp I and II (both 4 week classes, once a week) and had Chef John for Bootcamp I and Chef Erica for Bootcamp II. Both bootcamps were AMAZING! I highly recommend this class to anyone who has the slightest interest in cooking. Will definitely consider booking another class through Home Cooking New York. Edit 8/21/2025: I have since taken 2 virtual cooking classes with Netanya (Ramen & Persian). I also did the Korean cooking class with John. We made Kimchi Mandu, Doenjang Jjigae, Japchae and kimchi fried rice and left with leftovers!

John Scoff's Indian cooking class was amazing! We made three complete dishes, as well as homemade naan bread, paneer and a chutney. We participated in all of the steps of the process, and John walked us through lots of tips and tricks and skills necessary for successful Indian cuisine. The class was well organized, and the group dinner at the end was both fun and delicious! I can't recommend Home Cooking NY and John's classes highly enough!

Learned a lot, had fun, and enjoyed delicious food! My wife and I attended Thai Food cooking class at HCNY on Jan 25, 2024. The group was small, just 6 people, so we got almost a private class. Entire class was well planned and organized. Each of us got some hands-on stuff to do, we asked questions, took notes, enjoyed our meal, yet we ran exactly on time. John provided a lot of information not just on specific dishes we cooked, but also on Thai cuisine fundamentals, ingredients, and main tastes. He also shared some cool cooking tips we found useful though we are not cooking beginners. We ended up with a plentiful freshly made Thai dinner consisting of Tom Yum soup with Shrimp, Fried Fish in Tamarind sauce, Thai Red Curry Chicken, and sticky rice. All the dishes came out delicious and tasted like in a Thai restaurant! And most important we've successfully reproduced these dishes at home one week later! Thank you John, and The HCNY Crew for the great experience! We highly recommend Home Cooking NY to all who likes and learns to cook!

Google
Best cooking classes in New York. I took the seasoning 101 class with all and just wrapped up the building and balancing flavors boot camp with Susan. I can not recommend both enough. I’ve taken so many bad cooking classes in the city where most things are done for you and you’re just following a recipe. This is not the case. In all of these I learned proper cooking techniques and the “how” and “why” you do things a certain why so you can take these techniques home with you. They helped build the foundation of learning to be more intuitive with cooking. Susan was great with how to substitute ingredients for allergies or dietary preferences. Both teachers were wonderful with building community and making sure everyone worked together as a team. I’m looking forward to taking more classes here.

My partner and I really enjoyed the Romantic Dinner for 2! Susan was a great teacher and we really enjoyed the food we made. We even made the same dessert the next day at home because we were so excited by it, and will definitely be cooking the full dinner at home soon. Would definitely recommend this experience!

I am so grateful to Home Cooking, especially Chef John. We had my wife’s birthday party and it was just great! The positive reviews are all accurate. We had so much fun cooking and learning and eating. It was a wonderful night and I recommend it highly.

Yelp
I took the Baking Bootcamp classes with Susan and could not recommend enough! The classes are small and very hands on so I learned a lot. This bootcamp is a great opportunity to learn foundational baking skills (and bring home some delicious treats). We learned about Cakes, Breads, Chocolate & Pastries, and Tarts & Pies. I'm already looking into what other classes they offer and will be back to learn more.

Yelp
I have taken a couple of classes with Home Cooking, most recently the bagel and pretzel making class. The instructor, Erica, did a great job walking us through the recipes in addition to explaining the science behind it (so interesting!). She also encouraged us to get creative with our pretzel shapes, which I had a blast with! Bagels and pretzels came out very well. The studio is a bit difficult to find- make sure when putting the address that maps is pulling up in Manhattan. The two classes I've taken have gone a bit past the listed end time. Not a huge deal, just make sure to budget a little extra time in your day!

Yelp
I have been cooking and taking cooking classes for more years then I care to thing about, however, this being my first class with HCNY was fantastic with Erica Wides. I always learn a new technique or explanation from being with or following Erica on Funny People Making Food. Good time was had by all. And Kudos to Jennifer and staff at HCNY. Very organized and efficient.

Yelp
Absolutely awesome cooking staff! I arranged a team building cooking session for my office and everyone had an absolute blast!! Great option for large groups, easy to schedule a group session and the owner is so helpful in making the session a major success. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Hi All- Looking for help. I was SO excited for sauce class but my son got sick so in an abundance of caution I cancelled 5 days in advance. They issued me a credit and I can't locate this class again. I have left a vm and sent two emails seeing when this class will be offered again over the past 5 days - no response. I don't need a credit if they don't have that class but what is so upsetting is chasing and chasing help. WIth Covid and flu I have not run into this situation where we are penalized for staying away. Also a note they did fill the class so were not out money and if they coudn't back fill us-we should be financially responsible. Is there a name/email/phone number of someone you know I can reach out to in hopes of straightening this out.

Jaynee G.

Yelp
I've always loved baking so I signed up for baking boot camp to learn more and I really enjoyed the experience! My instructor Susan was very nice & knowledgeable, the class is easy going & easy to follow. Each week we did 2 or more recipes in the class, and in those 3 hrs we covered all the bases for said recipes. I'll gladly return for more classes in the future!

Hans K.

Yelp
I have been completely intimidated and helpless in the kitchen for my entire adult life, venturing only so far as to make scrambled eggs and the very occasional dinner. I took Chef Susan's bootcamp and (1) had SO MUCH FUN (2) met really great folks and (3) learned the basics that have now empowered me to take on...wait for it...Thanksgiving Dinner. Just a great learning experience in a really fun setting. Highly recommended!

Yelp
My wife and I used home cooking NY for a virtual class from a chef named Susan. We had such a fun time! We cooked the gnocchi with red sauce and salad and it came out so delicious. Susan is a great teacher, very patient, and quite funny. She is very flexible in her style of teaching, based on your understanding of things. She taught us a lot and we really enjoyed it. Would definitely recommend for team building, date night, or even family virtual gatherings.

Yelp
Great classes and instructor. Home Cooking offers very affordable classes in a beautiful setting. I've taken the Italian Seafood and Knife skills classes. I learned so much and the meals at the end are delicious, I highly recommend it!
google avatar

June G.

Yelp
Wonderful class which really sharpened my knife skills (yes, pun intended) :) Great space and terrific instruction. Enjoyed every minute.

Yelp
if you want to leave knowing everything about chopping herbs & vegetables, this is the class for you! convenient location, fairly priced considering you get to eat what you cook and a very knowledgeable instructed - trained at the culinary institute. And fun too!

Felicia S.

Yelp
the class was educational, fun and DELICIOUS. Chef John was great at teaching us how to cook a variety of staples and some of the tricks to ensure our food comes out great. From how to hold a knife through knowing the the right temperature when chicken and meats are done, it was easy to adapt what I learned in class back home. None of the students knew each other when we started, but John made it easy for us to become quick friends

Rob D.

Yelp
Once again Home Cooking New York knocked it out of the park! This time around it was an amazing Winter Soup class featuring 4 very different bu delicious soups. The staff is always welcoming and terrific. Would definitely recommend and do again!

Yelp
Amazing cooking class. Susan was a great teacher! I would definitely come back soon. Great experience!

Lucy G.

Yelp
I loved everything about this 6-week beginner boot camp. Jennifer is a knowledgeable, relaxed, and encouraging teacher. The kitchen is comfortable and handouts informative. The recipes we prepared are not too hard and really yummy. Getting to eat everything we made was, of course, an excellent bonus. We happened to have a great group of people that only increased the fun of getting together every week. I learned a lot of big and small tips that have already improved my cooking and my enjoyment of fixing meals. Look forward to taking more classes!

Yelp
The Ramen class led by Jennifer was terrific! There were a lot of moving parts in the recipes, but Jennifer did a great job not only with the practical cooking but also gave us a lot of useful information and pointers on how to make the ramen at home. We've taken several classes with HCNY and have never been disappointed. Thank you for another terrific and fun evening! We'll be back!

Peggy C.

Yelp
My kid really enjoyed this class, very informative staff and the class instructors are so patient and helpful, great way to spend a summer week in HCNY!

Victor S.

Yelp
Chef Susan was amazing! She showed us basic techniques and broke down what seemed like complex dishes into simple steps with hands-on demonstrations. This class is suitable to everyone from total newbies to someone who has cooked a thing or two. I picked up many new skills, and was able to put them to use almost immediately in my own kitchen, pleasantly surprising my significant other. Chef Susan runs each class with fantastic efficiency in a welcoming, friendly and highly engaging atmosphere.

Yelp
Great cooking demonstration of how to make duck breast with a delicious sauce and a confit of duck. Eating it afterwards was the best part. Delicious!

Ellen M.

Yelp
I recently took the Six Basic Cooking Techniques class and got far more than just six tips to take home! Really excellent class full of useful hints, hands on help, and the incredibly friendly Chef John who answered all our questions and went above and beyond. Such a thoughtful, worthwhile experience and I can't wait to apply those skills. Will definitely be looking into more classes in the future!

Andrea F.

Yelp
Amazing classes! Chef John was/is fantastic! He is passionate about cooking and know exactly how to share his knowledge. The food was delicious and the classes were a lot of fun.

Yelp
An excellent experience. Chef John was super engaging, friendly, and answered all my dumb questions without any judgment. I would highly recommend this class.

David K.

Yelp
Really great, thoughtful class. The insturctor was amazing. Space was a little hard to find and in more of a run down building but when we got to the show kitchen it was really bright and vibrant. Highly reccomend! - worth the money and a great alternative date option to dinner and a movie.

Sara R.

Yelp
I took Culinary Boot Camp: For Amateur Cooks with a friend and I really enjoyed. Chef John was fun and gave us small tips and tricks that were very helpful. I thought the make-up class policy was very fair, and reasonable for a busy New Yorker to make. I always brought a to-go container to take leftovers home. We also brought wine to add to the dinner at the end of the night as well. I mean I liked it enough to even write this review.

Ava K.

Yelp
Really amazing class. The chef was fun, funny, and a fantastic cook. He was very passionate about cooking and teaching us. I learned a ton. Would love to take another bootcamp with them. And the food was delicious when we got to eat it at the end of the class.

Yelp
Just finished the 6-week culinary boot camp for beginners with Erica. I learned so much and had a great time. Eric was a woderful teacher.

Josh S.

Yelp
My daughter and I had a great time at Home Cooking's "Great British Baking Show" class. The facility and instructor (Erica) were great. The class size allowed everyone to get very involved. We had a great time and will be back for another class soon. Pro Tip, you can BYOB!

Andrew P.

Yelp
Had a fantastic experience with the in-person class on Persian cuisine! Fun, engaging, hands-on, accessible recipes, knowledgeable instructor, delicious results.

Jordan P.

Yelp
I can't say enough good things about the Home Cooking New York class. I traveled from Houston, Texas with my daughter recently to see a Broadway show. She wanted to take a cooking class while we were in NYC. She loves watching the cooking channel. The only class I could find that was geared towards teens and adults was Home Cooking NY. All the others were strictly for adults or young kids, not teens. Chef John was awesome. He taught us everything we would need to know about knives. How to select the right ones, keeping them sharp, and cutting techniques. And the soup we made was fantastic. I'd wait in the cold NYC rain for this soup! The kitchen was easy to find, even for a Texan taking the subway from Times Square. And it's on the edge of Little Italy, so that was a bonus! Forget the rest... book a class with Home Kitchen New York!
google avatar

Ivory K.

Yelp
What a delicious soup we made from all the vegetables we cut up using our new knife skills. I'd do it again just for the sheer joy of watching those vegetables fly off the cutting board! Not only did we learn to cut but we learned about the different brands and uses of the knives. And we completed with a copious bowl of delectable soup!

Yelp
I absolutely LOVE Home Cooking New York. I love the 10 person set up and that it is a hands on class. I love the chefs too! I have taken a few classes now with John who is a great chef and instructor. I am looking forward to many more classes!

Yelp
I was gifted the "how to cook duck" class, and it was amazing. The instructor was very friendly and thorough, giving clear explanations for the steps and why each was necessary. He talked about everything from how to source duck, how to prepare it, and reasons he uses certain techniques over others. Before this class, I was extremely intimidated by cooking duck at home. No one really does it, which is also why it's so hard to source at the average grocery store to make. But after this class, my main takeaway has been: as long as you have the time and patience to fully allow the fat to render from the skin (as well as the time and patience needed to clean up a whole kitchen covered in duck fat - that's going to be a real doozy!), then cooking duck will actually be quite straightforward as long as you don't rush it. Would highly recommend the duck cooking class and this cooking school in general. It's in a slightly larger space than pre-pandemic and is well designed and run.

Renae M.

Yelp
Signed my daughter up for a week of cooking lessons. She absolutely loved it and wants to go back next year. Definetly would recommend especially if you have a bidding chef at home who wants to learn pepper techniques etc.

Bridget R.

Yelp
I enjoyed this class very much- How to make great sauces. Aside from learning how to make the wonderful sauces, the many other tips around food preparation, what to look for, how to cook things etc, that were interspersed throughout the evening were also very informative and good to know.

Scill C.

Yelp
What a fun class! Great family activity! Good explanations. Highly recommend.

Anna C.

Yelp
On a whim, I took the beginner 5-day boot camp with Chef Susan and could not have asked for a more fulfilling and instructive week! The kitchen is gorgeous, and it was a joy to learn from Susan, who is passionate, patient, and knows everything there is to know about food. Not only did we learn critical techniques and make delicious meals, but Susan walked us through how to buy food in an informed manner (where to look, what/when to buy, etc). As a recent college grad I'm so grateful I took this course; I feel empowered to shop for great food and cook wonderful meals. I hope to be back at HCNY for more!

Crandell D. W.

Yelp
I really enjoyed making the cheese puffs, Pan-Roasted Chicken with Jus (so tasty!) Roasted Ratatouille, Tarte Tartin. The chef was amazing & very down to earth. I enjoyed working to together with my classmates. Sitting down after we all finished cooking the meal & eating the food was the cherry on top of the sundae. I would definitely sign up again for this cooking class.

Jim M.

Yelp
Took the Six Basic Cooking Techniques class and was thoroughly impressed. The chef was engaging and personable. I learned a great deal and have already signed up for additional classes based on my experience at this first class.

Alexandra S.

Yelp
This was such a fun and informative class! Jennifer was super accommodating and let us switch to another day when we could no longer go on our original booked date. John was such a friendly and knowledgeable chef, he made sure everyone was involved and worked together. Such a fun way to meet new people in the city and make yummy food, and it's BYOB Highly recommend to anyone wanting to try something new with friends, family, coworkers or significant others!

Yelp
I have taken several classes at HCNY and have loved each and every class. I recently celebrated my kids birthdays here with friends and family and we had a ball! I will definitely will be back and highly recommend for anyone wanting to do something different and more memorable than going to a restaurant.

Yelp
This hidden treasure was outstanding. Though I only say "hidden" given the location, clearly others that have attended the class can agree how amazing this experience is. (Also shoutout to the physical directions to the class, given with the confirmation email because they are spot on.) This class exceeded expectations. My husband and I took the "How to cook shellfish class" with John and he was an absolute delight. Super insightful and a great teacher. We learned about how to choose and properly prepare our shellfish. John was also happy to answer any and all questions we had. And we asked many. The amount of attendees was small for this class but it made it all the more special. We took turns cooking and ate amazing meals. Definitely will be sharing how fantastic this place is with all friends and family. Everyone should try to attend at least one class. Or be like us and plan to attend again when we are back in town. Thank you for such a great and unique experience!

Leslie D.

Yelp
Chef Susan was amazing. We chose HomeCookingNY as we were looking for something fun and different to do to celebrate a 30th birthday. This class was such a great experience, and a perfect way to celebrate with a small group. Susan shared with the class her favorite ways of slicing, chopping, and cutting vegetables. Everyone participated in the class from beginning to end. We all had our own cutting boards and knives. We made a wonderful Paella with Chorizo & Mussels, Roasted Potatoes with Romesco Sauce along with Garlic Shrimp and Catalan Tomato-Garlic Toasts. Our delicious meal was shared by all the cooks, including Susan, at the end of the class. There was more than enough to go around, no one left hungry. BYOB was great as some friends drank wine while others had prosecco. We brought dessert to share with the group (a delicious flan) and sang happy birthday. I would highly recommend this fun evening of cooking with anyone looking for something to do as a couple, with a group of friends, or out of town guests visiting NY. Susan, thank you for a great evening @homecookingny!

Jillian C.

Yelp
Took a pasta making class this weekend with my sister and had a great time! Very hands on and the pasta we made was delicious. Our instructor Erica was fabulous. Can't wait to try another class!

Beth G.

Yelp
Jennifer was an excellent instructor. She explains what, how and why to do things and gave us a bit of history along the way. The facility is big, clean and well equipped and the class size is perfect for everyone to participate. I will definitely take another class at Hone Cooking.

Kelley H.

Yelp
This place is the best. I've signed up for many classes and have completed two: vegetables abe fresh pasta. The classes are fun, the teachers are top notch and you cover a lot of recipes and skills in one class.

Nicole H.

Yelp
This was a good workshop. I am calling it a workshop because I don't think it was a class, a class entails learning. While it was good experience, I wish we had a chance to actually cook the items and learn to make the selected recipe. We didn't really cook. The only thing that I was proud of was the pasta because I actually made some of the noodles. I also expected to handle and cook my own portions of the food. Even though we all washed our hands at the beginning of the session, I wasn't exactly thrilled about everyone touching and breathing on (because everything was passed around to smell it) absolutely everything. I had some hygiene concerns in that regard. The biggest issue for me though, was the fact that the instructor was literally coughing/clearing his throat on the food without covering his mouth, it happened more than once and it took all of me to refuse to eat any of the food. All in all, the group was great, the instructor was knowledgeable and patient, and we had a good time. I would maybe do it again, if the format was changed to include a more hands on experience and more hygiene protocols.

Cathy L.

Yelp
My husband and I are really glad we took the How to Cook Fish class with Chef John! The class was very practical, catered to locals who have to cook in apartments and get groceries in the area. The class size was cozy and we were all able to ask our individual questions about how to purchase and cook fish to a higher standard. For us, the level was pitched just right - it wasn't intimidating nor was it too basic. For our particular class, we didn't do much hands-on stuff, besides helping chop some produce and eating, which suited us fine. We felt that we got our money's worth from the pages of notes we took on the backs of our recipe sheets and from the delicious food we ate. If the cost concerns you, it may console you somewhat to note that the organization does community work, besides that you're paying a bit more than you would for a nice meal in Manhattan plus getting the massive benefit of a lot of practical home cooking advice!

Yelp
We used Home Cooking New York for a team outing and it was a wonderful experience. Jennifer was a breeze to work with, and everyone had a great time at the event. I would highly recommend them!
