Google
Yum! Delicious wholesome comfort food. Loads of vegetarian, vegan and meat options. Their tempeh melt and BBQ were real good. Better yet, the biscuits and okra fries hit the spot. Great local independent restaurant!!

Google
My husband, in-laws, and I were visiting Asheville and I had read some good things about this place. Upon arrival we were greeted warmly after waiting in line and surveying the menu. The lady behind the counter was sweet and professional. My in-laws got the fried fish plate, hubby the fish Po’boy, and I got the fried chicken. Everything was delicious: fries, cheese grits, slaw, kale, and the mushroom gravy that came with my chicken. I also tried the iced herbal tea, cherry lemon ginger and it was very tasty. Definitely will be back!

Google
Pickup order for pimento chicken sandwich, catfish po boy, and fries/collards for lunch. Restaurant is quaint, hidden gem. The quality of the fry beats just about anything else in town. Not soggy or steamed, even after the drive home. A good lunch place. Tasty sauces. Good flavor and texture. Sandwiches that are loaded with protein, though don't fall apart while eating. Will visit again.

Google
We were driving through North Carolina and stopped at Homegrown for lunch. Homegrown was a standout. Staff were on point and very friendly. I tried the chicken sandwich, and it was amazing. Heavily seasoned with fresh toppings. The fries were also good. The vibe was immaculate.

Google
Visited in July 2024. The burger was delicious. The baked apple dessert with ice cream was also phenomenal. My companions also enjoyed their meals, a BBQ tofu sandwich and a catfish po boy. The building was kept a little warm for my preference. Limited parking in the front. Appeared that the place is popular with the locals. Three meals, three sides, drinks, two desserts, and tip cost us about $82. I would definitely go back again.

Google
Stopped by for lunch after reading several reviews, and Homegrown did not disappoint!! Service was friendly and helpful. We enjoyed the fried chicken sandwich with house made fries, the mediterranean orzo pasta and finished with an apple/mango/peach cobbler. Everything tasted fresh, homemade, and delicious! Left stuffed and grateful we found this wonderful spot.

Google
Really enjoyed this place. The Catfish was perfect & all the food was prepared well. The only thing is would be that, there wasn't AC, Except for in one small room. We used that area, so it worked out well. The place is cozy however & it's definitely worth it to eat there. I will definitely return when in the Asheville area!

Google
If there were fountain drinks I could leave a 5. The food was good. I had the fried chicken sandwich. It was crispy and tender and the honey mustard horseradish sauce was good and I don't like horseradish.

Yelp
We stopped here for lunch while in town for a concert. Not impressive from outside but food was delish! Support local, this is a great lunch spot!

Yelp
You order at the counter, then find an open table, so it's not white table cloths dining, but they aren't trying to be. The food is honest and affordable. Both my wife and I ordered the fried chicken plate with mushroom gravy; she got cheesy grits and I got the sesame kale (packed a ton of flavor for a kale dish). The fried chicken has a great breading that keeps it light while giving you all of that crunchiness you hope for in good fried chicken. The dining space is like a casual diner/coffee shop, cozy, comfy & clean.

Yelp
Like many places, this restaurant's operations were limited when I stopped in, due to hurricane-related infrastructure damage. They were offering only takeout, though an outdoor patio on site seemed available. The menu was quite limited, but I was tempted by a tempeh melt. The leading tempeh company in the region was unmistakeable, and the sandwich was hard as I had hoped. A salad was less impressive, with the apples seemingly having been out too long despite the fact that I was there early in the day, and the cheese the menu promised being absent. Realistically, not a four-star experience under normal conditions, but given that everyone is picking themselves up at this point, I assume they have more to offer and I'm glad they're open at all.

Yelp
We stopped here on our passing through. This place is a must. The service was excellent. Our server was spot on. I ordered the Nachos and they were a 5 out of 5. They are a must try if you stop. The portion is very large so you can share. Love the setting you can sit on the porch and have a quiet lunch in the mountains.
google avatar

Yelp
The staff was kind and the wait wasn't too long to receive the meal. The presentation of the meal was great, I just wish there was some more seasoning to enhance the flavors of the overall
google avatar

Jim H.

Yelp
This is a very unassuming, casual place. You order at the counter and they bring the food to you. I had the Blue Plate Special (a chicken sammy with fries) and a Diet Coke. My wife ordered the pot pie with a locally produced Devil's Foot ginger beer. Our meals were both delicious and the portions were very ample. The service was good and all of the staff was friendly and helpful.
google avatar

Catherine W.

Yelp
If you are a Vegan, keep going. Ordered the tempeh patty melt, no vegan cheese. So it was simply burned flavored greasy seitan and 2 pieces of average bread. I ordered the chickpea salad wrap and veggie soup. The wrap was ok, a nice hint of dill. The wrap was not grilled so pretty basic. The soup was lukewarm if that. The place was packed so perhaps the chef just isn't real connected with vegan cuisine. We vegans love flavor:)
google avatar

Emily S.

Yelp
The food was amazing and sitting on the patio with a Mountain View was a nice way to start spring. I really recommend the fried fish. The service left a little more to be wanted, but nothing terrible. I would go back again. Quick, good eats.

Yelp
My favorite southern restaurant in Asheville. Service is friendly and prompt. Ambiance feels homey, matching the order at the counter, meat and 3 vibes. Not to mention the food which will blow you away. Ingredients are responsibly and locally sourced and you can taste the difference! Also best fried chicken sandwich in Asheville!
google avatar

Joshua H.

Yelp
Loved the ambiance of this local spot. Good service and prices with humble presentation and plating. Biscuit was fresh, gravy was tasty and breading was nice and crunchy.
google avatar

Yelp
Awesome food. While coming in from out of town needing a quick carryout this was perfect and so much more than fast food. The chicken sandwich was one of the I've had and the handout fries were top notch!

Yelp
This one was right on the line between a three-star and a four-star review. We thought that the flavors here for the things we tried (a Nashville hot chicken "blue plate special", and an open-faced chicken biscuit platter) were not bad, but the Nashville hot wasn't very hot--to us, anyway--and the chicken wasn't as juicy as we were hoping for. Now, those jerk seasoned cauliflower and the beets? Solid. And the burger made my daughter very happy. Plus, the service speed was a little faster than we were expecting given some of the other spots we hit in Asheville for this vacation. I would definitely come back here, because a friend of mine who lived here for a while swears by this place. But as a first impression, I thought this was a 3.5 out of 5.0, and as my kids like to say, 3.5 is not a recommendation. I do recommend checking out the space, though; it's not fancy, and I love how many restaurants in town seem to be in someone's house.

Yelp
Yes, yes a thousand times yes! This is one of those meals that I will be dreaming about for years. I stopped here on vacation. It's a fairly small place with indoor and outdoor seating. It has a very casual vibe. You order at the counter, they give you a number and they either bring it to your table or hand it off for takeout. Please note they didn't have A/C going on the 88 degree day I visited and that's only reason I ordered takeout. Service was great from the counter staff to the server to the kitchen who made my food super fast! I was really curious about the blackened okra since most places cover the flavor with fried batter. They were absolutely delectable and I could have eaten a double order. The buttermilk fried chicken breast was cooked to perfection and seasoned well. While it does come with mushroom gravy, it didn't need it. I wish I had a slice of bread to mop up all the gravy. I also had the cheesy grits. They were better than average but I rarely eat grits. I finished it off with an iced tea and the whole meal was under $20. Highly recommended!

Danielle L.

Yelp
I had the kale Caesar with chicken and the carrot soup, and both tasted like they came straight from the garden--so fresh, vibrant, and flavorful. The kale was perfectly crisp, the chicken was juicy, and the soup had a comforting, homemade feel with just the right amount of spice. This place nails clean, wholesome food. So good--I'll definitely be back!

Yelp
Returned here when I was meeting a friend in North Asheville yesterday. Had kind of forgotten about this place but when I saw it online, I remembered an old favorite. It's a little bit homely when you first walk in with a ton of signage that's clearly hand painted. Also incredibly inclusive. I love that. Their menu is giant in a little overwhelming at first. I really like their salads and the fish and chips but this time it was around brunch, so I opted for huevos rancheros. They were a little more unconventional, but they felt comforting nonetheless. It was kind of like a giant soup of healthy comfort food. Black bean salsa, cheesy grits, and eggs. I do wish that ass egg preference because I prefer over easy but it was still good. This entire place is healthy comfort food. And I'm there for that. There is also super sweet service from everybody that works here. Highly recommend this place.

Yelp
Food was so freaking good. I don't know where they got the pickled onions from but omg best I've ever had. Cheesy Grits were perfect. Pancakes were fluffy. Blueberry French toast was a dream. Sunshine bowl was aces. Staff was so friendly. Yes yes yes.
google avatar

Glenn K.

Yelp
The buttermilk fried chicken with summer veggies and cheese grits. Amazing. From the outside it didn't look too promising, but once we tasted the food, we were sold. Great staff and delicious, fresh food.
google avatar

Dylan H.

Yelp
Definitely do not miss this place! The food is amazing. Accidentally stumbled upon this one. The Cuban Redneck is spectacular. I have a very picky eating child and could not save enough positive things about the friend chicken, ate it all. Very friendly staff, clean and easy to get to from Asheville. Will definitely be back.
google avatar

Yelp
Small unassuming place. Great menu options, counter order then food delivered. We had the chicken salad wrap, buttermilk chicken sandwich and banana pudding. Everything was really good!
google avatar

Stephanie F.

Yelp
Well, we got the chicken basket with kale and hand cut fries for sides and my husband got the baked beans as his side. Everything was DELICIOUS. I only wish they made desserts too. We loved our experience, and grateful they were able to open back up after Helene.
google avatar

Stacey P.

Yelp
This restaurant is like visiting Grandma's house, with the creaking floors and doors. Any bottle of wine is just $10 on Mondays. The catfish tacos are delicious. The tender fish has a spicy, crispy coating, and is dressed with pickled onions. The side of kale has an amazing liquor that's not overly salty. Their chopped pork bbq is tossed in a smoky sauce and served with creamy slaw and roasted sweet potatoes. The food they're plating isn't fancy, but it sure tastes like they use the best homegrown, local ingredients, just like your grandma (if she's a good cook)!

Yelp
Just not impressed. We both had homegrown bookmarked because it seemed like a good place with comfort food and vegetarian and vegan options, but we hadn't made it over yet. We started at Nine Mile actually, and they were on an hour wait on a Sunday night. HomeGrown, on the other hand, was empty. Maybe that should have been a clue. Maybe it was just what I ordered, but I was in the mood for some real comfort food and got the chicken pot pie. First thing you should know is that this is basically the size of a cup of soup. It was not entree portion. The entire thing could be eaten in like 4 spoon fulls. Second thing is that only the bottom half of the biscuit was flaky. The top half was so hard that I was stabbing at it with the spoon to get pieces to break off. These biscuits must have been made hours ago and just left sitting out. The stew was good, but it also wasn't anything special. Like I said, maybe this is on me for ordering something as basic as a chicken pot pie, but it was very disappointing. My wife seemed to like her BBQ tofu sandwich so the place might be better if you don't order like me. But I was unimpressed.

Yelp
We stopped in from out of town and wanted brunch. My wife went in ahead of me and was standing there, being ignored. I walked in and they started paying attention. We asked for eggs and person at the register yelled to someone else to get the breakfast menu down. We were coldly told they stopped serving breakfast at 11 am. They made it sound like we were really late. I looked at my phone and it was 11:01 am. It didn't look very comfy in there anyway so we just left.

Tony R.

Yelp
Food and service is amazing. The buttermilk chicken melts in your mount. We are never disappointed when dining there.
google avatar

Yelp
Came here during my trip to Asheville and I was not disappointed! I ordered the buttermilk chicken sandwich, leaving out the sprouts and red onion and I swapped out the honey mustard for mayonnaise instead. It was incredible! I also love how the portion size is so big, I almost couldn't finish. I definitely recommend coming here.
google avatar

Yelp
Great breakfast place with a family! As the names suggests, this restaurant has a homey feel to it. You order at the front and seat yourself but the front cashier is nice and helpful. She also checked on us and took away some empty dishes throughout our meal. There are a limited amount of tables inside so be prepared to sit on the covered patio. Our food came out quickly. Everyone enjoyed their food. Between us we had the huevos rancheros, pancakes, biscuits, sausage, and veggie egg scramble. The pancakes were light and fluffy. The sausage patties were nicely seasoned without being overly salty. The salsa and large fried tortilla that came with the huevos rancheros was excellent, the salsa had a nice smoky taste. Bonus, I think the pancake batter is made with water and not sure if it's homemade or not but it doesn't have eggs in it like most places. One son is allergic to eggs and usually gets sad when he can't have pancakes when we're out but didn't want them this time. I'd come back for lunch because that menu looked amazing too.
google avatar

Stephanie K.

Yelp
We came in for a late lunch based on reviews. Ordering at the counter was quick and the employees were friendly. My husband I both had the smoked pork plate. He got his with fries and I had the cheesy grits. The grits were good but the fries were incredible. The portion size was plenty. My husband felt the pork was heavy on pepper but mine was great. Loved the flavor of the slaw. There are several little seating areas in addition to a small outdoor area. I would definitely come back.

Yelp
I've been to HomeGrown twice now, over the years. First time was for brunch over the weekend, and the second time was for dinner. The most recent bust was dinner, where I had the catfish with two side. I got it fried, and I think if I had to do it all over again, I'd go blackened. For the sides I got mashed taters with gravy and the okra. Okra was amazing, taters were taters. The catfish was good, mea culpa for getting fried. As far as fried is concerned they did a great job. From a service perspective, it's order and take a number, then they bring food to your table. I'd really prefer table service. The ambiance is classic Asheville. If you don't know what that means, eat here. Parking is a problem, I ain't gonna lie. But you can park around the area and walk over, worst case scenario. Check them out for a delish southern dish!

Yelp
It's in old house what could be better I felt like I was at an aunts house nothing flashy just awesome food I had meatloaf w/ mushroom gravy mashed potatoes and collard greens it was fantastic, just go in order find a table and your food arrives, great service it's a pearl in side an oyster.

Yelp
Farm to table, i hope they open soon. I would love to not have to do dishes tonite and these guys cook like i do.

Yelp
We tried coming here last year, but they were doing maintenance. It was a bit frustrating since we didn't see signs, nothing on their website, and nothing on Google stating they were closed. So we waited before they were supposed to open for 30 mins (since they open at 11 for breakfast), and then got turned away at 11:10 when someone came to the door after seeing us there for so long. We got there early because our AirBnb's check-out was at 10am and nothing was open until noon. So we just waited. But we were finally able to go in last week... it was ok. We again had to wait 30 mins since we got there too early (AirBnb check-out at 10am again). But it was ok, we just walked the street a bit to sight-see. Food (4/5): Redneck Cuban: Pretty good! Perfect amount of sauce. I just wish it came with a side... since just a sandwich doesn't cut it. Open Face Fried Chicken Biscuit with Roasted Herb Potatoes: The chicken & gravy on it was good. Lots of flavor. But the gravy was a little thin. The potatoes need something else... more seasoning... and a little more of them. Biscuit (3/5): The biscuit was ok... not much flavor and was a little dry making it have a not good denseness. Wait Time & Ambiance (3/5): Not considering the late time they open for breakfast (11am), the wait time in line was kinda long. We were close to the front but still had time to read the menu on the chalkboard/wall about 10 times. The inside wasn't what I was expecting. The building is strip-mall-like in the front, but inside it's old and has weird extensions in it. They need more seating since I felt like there were barely any inside. Service (5/5): Very friendly people. It's a fast causal place. You wait in line, order off a chalkboard/wall, get a table number, then find a table where they bring the food out to you. TLDR: Ok food. Nice people. Wish they were open earlier.
google avatar

Gretel Y.

Yelp
Stopped by HomeGrown on our way out of town. Love the cozy vibe. You order at the counter and they give you a table number then bring your order to you. The menu is written on a giant black board next to the counter. They offer a variety of options from chicken to fish to veggies. They also offer beer and wine. There's something for everyone. We ordered the following: Coffees Pimento & hummus appetizer Blackened catfish tacos Open faced chicken biscuit Coffee is served in different mugs, which is always cool to me. There's a coffee station on the side of the counter with sweeteners and creamer. The portions are big and will definitely fill you. I had the blackened catfish tacos and they were flavorful. Hubs got the open faced chicken biscuit covered in gravy. It looked divine. He devoured it. We also shared the pimento & hummus app. The pimento was good and the hummus was unqiue. We enjoyed everything.

Yelp
Cute spot w/ parking. Fantastic fried chicken w/ mushroom gravy. Great menu. Return visit for sure.
google avatar

Elena B.

Yelp
Unfussy cafe good for parties of 1-4 people. 5 or 6 maybe except they only have 1 or 2 tables to accommodate that size ... awesome staff, delicious burgers ... the patio asks for no smoking but it won't stop vapers sadly. I appreciate the attention to local food but my Farmers Salad did not fill for an almost-$12 (I'm actually eating a protein bar as I type this) ... maybe if I ordered with some chicken? I would skip all the salads but recommend the burgers - they were delicious, filling, and the sides are yum. Hands down the best thing was the biscuits - hearty and moist ... with the mixed berry jam it's A++
google avatar

Petra P.

Yelp
I've been here for brunch and dinner. Both were delicious. Good prices and fast service.
google avatar

Gregory H.

Yelp
Looking for dinner while visiting my daughter and wanting to support local. HG came up in the Yelp app and my daughter said, "Yeah, let's go there". Good choice! While the redneck Cuban wasn't over the top great, it was pretty good. Ambiance, and service were what really sold us on the place after we were there. Most places we go, we end up having way too much food on our plates and end up throwing the leftovers away a few days later. Not here - perfect portion sizes. Looking forward to a return visit.
google avatar

Jessica V.

Yelp
We have eaten breakfast here two days in a row because it is so incredible. Both the bacon and sausage egg and cheese biscuits are life changing. The most incredible buttery flaky biscuits ever!! The fried chicken biscuit is also outrageous, as is the blueberry honey French toast. The ambiance is homey and wonderful. Every single person who works here is super kind and helpful. Can't recommend highly enough!
google avatar

Julie M.

Yelp
The food was delicious. I got the trout which was well cooked and seasoned. Hubby got the veggie plate with tofu which he liked. The ambiance is relaxed and the waitstaff is kind. The prices are very reasonable for Asheville. We were looking for exactly this type of spot and were glad not to break the bank
google avatar

Randy C.

Yelp
My wife and I decided to try a new place today while we were in Asheville. We seen this place on Yelp and decided to try it. The first thing I noticed was the parking is very limited and I mean very limited. If there are more than five cars there is no where to park. When you walk in there is a large menu on the wall that you and pick from. You have to order and pay before you sit down, I'm not a fan of that. The place was very cold, tables were small. They bring your food to your table, no one ever can by to check on us or ask if we liked the food. I had the Redneck Cuban, it was ok nothing to write home about. My wife had a burger and we couldn't decide if it was real meat or not. Not impressed at all. We will not go back

Jessica M.

Yelp
They served my husband a hamburger with rancid beef and laughed about it. There was disturbing artwork on the wall so we got the food to go. By the time we got home there was nothing we could do about it. Someone report them to the health department.
google avatar

Pamela S.

Yelp
The food was excellent! My grandmother had the Sautéed Veggies, my aunt the trout & me the chicken biscuit. Def will go there again.
google avatar

Brad E.

Yelp
Homegrown had great food. The options were also unusual. Breakfast Pot Pie and Blueberry French Toast Casserole-both were awesome. The pancakes were delicious as well as the biscuits.
google avatar

Melissa C.

Yelp
On a chilly, rainy Sunday, on the last leg of a road trip to Georgia, we needed something to eat that wasn't wrapped in paper and handed to us in a bag through a window. So, Homegrown, it was. What a find! Unassuming and easygoing, this farm-to-table joint was just what the doctor ordered. They have a great selection of soups, salads and sandwiches, not to mention a great selection of desserts and local craft beers. I had a bowl of sausage-kale-white bean soup, and my beau a kale Caesar salad with blackened chicken. Both were excellent and hit the spot. Paired with a couple of NC-brewed IPAs, it was a delightful lunch that allowed us to truly relax and get ready to hit the road again. If you find yourself in Asheville, definitely stop in (and be sure to bring your mask!)
google avatar

Kelly C.

Yelp
Yummy place where the food has that quality taste like you would experience if your friends or family cooked a meal for everyone. Warm and cozy vibe, feels like you're eating a meal at home. You can tell the food is right off the farm and doesn't have that tacky artificial taste that you experience at some places. Thanks for cooking for us you guys, keep doing ur thing! :)
google avatar

Marcos B.

Yelp
Very friendly but no nonsense staff. Food is absolutely delicious. Tempeh was incredible. Lots of little rooms like an old house should be. Definitely coming back to try everything else.
google avatar

Laura K.

Yelp
The fried chicken is unsurpassed and the variety of options makes it so easy for the entire family to find several "gotta have it" items. It's as fresh and local as it gets! Dang! now I'm hungry.
google avatar

Jacquelyn B.

Yelp
This is a great find in Asheville, NC, hole on a wall restaurant. It's not fancy; it's an old house converted into a restaurant. Everything is fresh & delicious. Ate here twice, once for dinner and another for breakfast. Service was friendly. Would definitely recommend and come back again.
google avatar

Delysia M.

Yelp
We were traveling through and I chose this place for its several vegan options. I shared the hummus appetizer, then ordered a cup of potato and lentil soup followed by a bowl of sautéed veggies with brown rice and tofu. Everything was excellent! Then later that night I received a text from the owner who had found my wallet there after closing. Even though the restaurant was not open the next day she arranged to meet me to return my wallet. Way to go the extra mile!

Yelp
I've been wanting to try this place after being told it has the best chicken biscuit in town and it did not disappoint! The chicken was crunchy and the cheese added great flavor to the meal. I got the lemon and herb eggplant as a side and my friend got the Jerk flavored okra and they were both very flavorful. The okra is not fried which disappointed my friend so be careful there.
