The Best Restaurants In Sonoma - Sonoma - The Infatuation

"Homegrown Bagels has been Sonoma’s carb-loading institution for over 40 years, and it shows. The space is small and unfussy, and most importantly, the bagels are the NY-style platonic ideal—chewy, with a crisp, bubbly exterior. You can’t go wrong with a classic everything or a savory onion bialy with cream cheese, but they also have outstanding bagel sandwiches, like the lox special with the usual tomato, red onion, and capers, and the grilled chicken, bacon, and provolone wonder that is the Petaluma Melt Down. Come early since there is usually a line, and they sell out fast." - allison green, gabi moskowitz

Absolutely LOVED these bagels!!!! We had two bagel sandwiches with different fillings, both delicious. The Jalapeno cream cheese was so yum. The bagels are fresh and just the right texture. The staff were so lovely, really excellent service. Highly recommend for brekky or lunch!!!

As an annual visitor to Sonoma, Homegrown Bagels is our go-to start to as many mornings as possible. I think about the lox bagel at least once a month. It’s great to have such variety (truly hard to choose they’re all so good!). Love the hometown feel and it’s obvs a local favorite.

Google
I came here in high hopes of new York style bagels, per a few other reviews. As I'm a NY'er with a carb fetish. I think they are in the style of NY bagels for sure (not Noah's or Einstein thank goodness). But my sesame bagel was much more crunchy and baked on the outside than I like, so not as chewy, dense and satisfying as H&H or Essa in NY. So not exactly what I was hoping for but better than most bagels I've had in California. I also would have liked more cream cheese on the lox special. Usually I take a ton of cc OFF my cc bagels at other places cuz there is too much, but here, I wanted a bunch more that wasn't there. It seemed like whipped cream cheese instead of brick cc so it sort of dissolves into nothing. All in all, good NY style bagels but a little dry and crunchy than I like. I almost forgot to mention! The coffee was quite good. I drink my coffee black and it was nutty and full flavored, not too acidic/fruity. A good strong brew.

Google
The best bagel shop!! Today they even had special green bagels that they put in our bag for free for Saint Patrick’s Day! Stewart the owner is a gem of a human.

Google
At Homegrown Bagels in Sonoma, they're not just baking bagels—they're crafting carb masterpieces! Imagine a bagel so perfect, it could make a New Yorker weep with joy. Whether it's the classic lox smothered in cream cheese and capers or a wild pastrami dream piled high on a rye bagel, this place has a bagel combo for every palate. It’s like they kidnapped all the best flavors and held them hostage inside a doughy circle of happiness. And let’s talk about their sandwich game—it’s so strong, you’ll need a napkin just to handle the juicy awesomeness. Located snugly in the Sonoma Marketplace, Homegrown Bagels is your go-to spot for a breakfast that’s worth getting out of bed for. Swing by, grab a bite, and let your taste buds go nuts in the best possible way.

Google
Best bagels in Sonoma County. This is a local treasure. Classic types of bagels and lots of newer flavor combos, too. I always recommend this place to visitors!

Google
As someone from New York, I have a high standard when it comes to bagels and I have to say Homegrown Bagels impressed me with their lox special on everything bagel. It’s not quite a NY bagel but pretty darn good and the best I’ve had in California. The staff were also very nice, helpful and friendly.

Yelp
Cute little bagel shop in Sonoma. It has been around forever and so loved by locals and tourists. Staff is always so friendly and helpful with ordering. You walk in order pay and go sit down if you are eating there and they will take it to your table. If you like coffee try their coffee with cinnamon it is delicious and they have free refills while you are there. I got a blueberry bagel with strawberry cream cheese toasted. It was so good and I love that they have different cream cheeses to choose from to keep it fun and different. Prices are reasonable for what you get.

Yelp
This place is located in a shopping center so parking is easy and accessible. It is a small mom and pop shop that serves bagels, coffee and breakfast sandwiches. When I went in the morning, there was no line and the service was relatively fast. The triple double coffee was just OK. I got the dude bagel sandwich and it was quite refreshing. There are people from all walks of life that come here. Only one restroom!

Thomas

Yelp
Enjoyed the bagels. Was warm and priced fair Hope to come back soon Thanks for the bagels

Yelp
Family run business, friendly staff! Cute mini bagels get them toasted for a fresher taste! Fresh made cream cheese. Worth a visit

Yelp
What a nice little place to stop in for a bagel! There are a lot of flavors of bagel and of cream cheese and also many sandwich varieties. I didn't try the coffee but my everything bagel was great. Service is fast and friendly. There's outdoor seating.

Shannon P.

Yelp
Service and bagels are tasty. We eat here every week or get a dozen bagels to go. The ambiance could stand a little improvement, but otherwise it's a nice place!

Yelp
Nick recommended Homegrown Bagels for the best bagel in Sonoma. It was really busy when I walked in, yet the line was so quick, and they took my order immediately. Friendly staff, helped me pick out "The Dude" with an everything bagel. It was the cutest shop and had outside seating as well. She even walked my bagel outside to me. Definitely will be back next time I'm in Sonoma.

Flora Z.

Yelp
Service was fast and food was great. Good prices. Nice spot to grab a quick breakfast sandwich and some coffee. Definitely would come again.

Yelp
We stayed in Sonoma for a few days and this place came highly recommended. The location was easily walkable from the square, and had a warm, inviting atmosphere. They offer a wide assortment of bagels and sammies and several cream cheeses as well. The bagels have a great flavor but are not the chewy dough of a NYC bagel. Totally worth a try.

Yelp
Great little hidden gem of a place. Food and staff were both fantastic! Can't wait to go back.

Dana L.

Yelp
I am updating my previous reviews because the owner was gracious enough to reply and provide a full refund of my last online order. I wish it hadn't taken a negative Yelp review to get a response, but it's appreciated.

Yelp
I lalways seek out bagels when traveling, because I love them, and they're always a quick and easy breakfast when you're trying to make the most out of your days. I had the Lox Special and it was quite good. The bagel was fresh and so was the lox. My wife had one of their other bagel sandwiches and really enjoyed it. There is no option to eat indoors right now, which I'm sure is a COVID precaution - you just order from a "window" and they bring your food out to you. There are a couple of tables outside to use. I'm a tough grader when it comes to bagels, but these definitely passed my test!

Yelp
There's a reason why there's a line out the door of Homegrown Baking Co.-- it's worth the wait. We took my in-laws here for breakfast before wine tasting and weren't disappointed. We each got different breakfast sandwich bagels, which you can customize to your preferences. The basic two-egg omelette breakfast sandwich starts at $5.50. Add your cheddar, jack, Swiss, pepper jack or cream cheese for an additional $2. Meat choices are bacon, sausage, chorizo, ham and turkey for an additional $2.50. You can also add avocado or veggies (tomato, cucumber, sprouts) for $2. I highly recommend the breakfast sandwich with pepper jack and chorizo. My mouth is watering now just thinking about it. If you go on a weekend, prepare for a little bit of a wait. Don't worry. The line moves quickly and the food is delicious.

Yelp
Change of owners recently? Website woefully out of date. Under news tab they wish everyone a happy hannuka 2015. Ordered on-line. Ordered bialys. Paid on line. Drove from Santa Rosa. Arrived. Was told "we don't make bialys anymore." I continued to be cheerful, didn't complain one word. Persnickety Spanish speaking latino older woman giving off annoyed vibe made a derogatory comment about me. I look European and I speak fluent Spanish. I let it pass not letting on that she's busted. I won't return. Don't care how good or not the bagels taste.

Yelp
I came around 11:30am on a Wednesday and ordered the Summer Special ($7) on an onion bagel which turned out to be pretty good. I wanted an everything bagel but unfortunately they were out. They don't have a menu posted so I couldn't see what they had until I got to the register (I attached them here for your reference!).

Marisol N.

Yelp
These are the best bagels in Sonoma. My go to bagel is an everything bagel toasted with cream cheese and they do it just the right way. Their breakfast sandwiches are delicious with so many different options.
google avatar

Ron J.

Yelp
This is a legit bagel. Good variety of bagel types, including a really good bialy. There's also a range of bagel sandwiches that are constructed with quality ingredients. The operation is efficient and service is friendly and efficient.

Yelp
Simply put-THE BEST place to feed your bagel addiction! I got a Stuart's Special this morning-definitely worth every penny! I called it in ahead of time, so it was ready & hot when I got there. The staff are all so kind & welcoming, the service simply can't be beat!
google avatar

Yelp
HGB's Food and service is great - always! We have been going there for 30 years! Never disappointed!

Yelp
Phenomenal! Being from Jersey myself I get real picky with my bagels, pizza, Italian food and a really good sub sandwich. Haha! True! Homegrown Bagels is MY 'Bagel' shop in Northern California. I can't find my salted bagels anywhere except here...Truly authentic and delicious. A cup of coffee to go with a salted bagel and cream cheese...Yeah...Happy morning! Jorge and his family with outstanding customer service greet you with a smile and set the tone for this gem. This is a small business that realizes customer service is key while offering a great product. Very much appreciated and enjoyed. Homegrown Bagels you Rock!
google avatar

Leslie D.

Yelp
The staff let me in a little early because it was raining so I appreciated it. The cinnamon coffee was really good and the bagels were good size and soft.

Yelp
Homegrown Baking Co. likely has the best bagels in Sonoma. While still not New York bagel substitutes, they are good: crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Service is friendly and relatively fast. The dining area is somewhat spartan, but still cozy. Pro tips: (1) During the week, hours are a little erratic, and sometimes they run out of bagels and close early: if you _must_ have a bagel, don't show up near closing time or you might be disappointed. (2) Available flavors change by the day: if only an "everything" bagel will do, call first to see if they have them that day. It's great to have Homegrown Baking Co. bagels available in Sonoma.

Michele G.

Yelp
Whenever I work the graveyard shift I stop in on my way home from work in the morning. They are amazing! Friendly service, the way they toast their bagels and the amount of cream cheese they put on is delicious. I get the toasty crunch but it's not overdone. Usually I get my orders to go but if I had the time I would sit inside and eat. I love the bagel guy they have hanging on the wall. Overall they have the best bagels I have ever tasted. They have been serving people in Sonoma for as long as I can remember and I'm nearly 50.
google avatar

Stephanie Z.

Yelp
We ordered online. Disappointed that the pork belly bagel wasn't available. Still had to wait about 10 mins to pay and have the order finish up. It was good and as described. Friend felt like the ranchero had too much cream cheese but I liked it like that. Los special was more toasted than I expected when I chose lightly toasted. Have had better bagels but hit the spot.
google avatar

Spencer J.

Yelp
I looked up breakfast places on yelp and found this place. I hadn't even noticed it before. I got the summer special and added bacon and cucumber. So good. Will be coming back soon!
google avatar

Wilson N.

Yelp
Nice bagel shop in a little shopping center. They have menus everywhere so you can decide what you want before you get up to the door, where they're currently taking orders. Got the cowboy which is pretty much a BLT with egg on an everything bagel. Bagel has a nice chew and ingredients were fresh. Got our food pretty quickly so we were able to start our day.
google avatar

Yelp
We drove an hour from Sacramento in search of a good bagel. Homegrown Baking Co did not disappoint. When we arrived there was a line, so we knew we had to have picked a good spot. The line moved quickly and before we knew it we had our lox bagels in hand. When I went to college in New York, I thought the bagel scene was overrated. Then, when I moved out of New York, I realized what I had taken for granted. It can be hard to find a quality bagel out west but this place has everything you are looking for. The bagels are fresh, with the perfect texture combo of chewy and slightly more firm on the outside. I ordered an everything bagel and it was.. everything I could have hoped for. The ratio of filling to bagel was on point and that sucker was filling! Half a bagel kept me fill till mid-afternoon. If you're in the Sonoma area looking for a good breakfast, you cannot go wrong with the bagels here! It was worth driving an hour for!

Jonathan F.

Yelp
This morning I discovered that our local bagel shop in Somoma makes delicious Apple strudel. Fresh, flaky with tender apple pieces, oh so delicious! I liked the bagels but the apple strudel is the winner at this local spot. I will go back soon and try the cream cheese strudel. Best time to get there is early by 7 AM. Customer service is good. Friendly staff and atmosphere. Plenty of parking.

Yelp
This seems to be where all the people in Sonoma buy their bagels, there was constantly a line. Don't panic, it moved fast and you have sone decent amount of shade to hide in while waiting for your order. Got two sesame toasted breakfast bagels (cream cheese, eggs and bacon) and enjoyed them at one of the outdoor tables. They are not New York bagel sized, which means ... I could even finish an entire one myself? Wrong... the bagel was so stuffed I could barely finish half. The plain cream cheese was very smooth (is that the right word?). Anyways, go grab a bagel, they are pretty good.

Yelp
I can't begin to tell you how long I've been eating at Homegrown Bagel, probably since 1986. It's been a mainstay of Sonoma breakfast options for as long as I can remember and is still doing a fantastic job! Last weekend I popped in with my mom because we were craving lox and a bagel sounded like a great idea. It was. We ordered two of the lox specials (included tomato, onions, cream cheese and capers) on everything bagels and they were delicious! A nice portion of salmon and well made bagel were delicious but, it's the cream cheese that's the star of the show. Long lines on the weekend (rightfully so), so it might be a good option to call ahead or stock up on the cream cheese to go containers.
google avatar

Candace W.

Yelp
We were looking for a quick bagel before our drive home and I stumbled upon this place on Yelp. There was a long line that lead to the parking lot as the bagel shop is not fully opened yet. There are two tables outside for eating but it looks like most of the locals eat here. Unfortunately they don't offer any cheese bagels but I was able to get a sesame with lox and chive cream cheese. The cream cheese was good with lots of chives, not much lox but the bagel was very chewy. It was dense and not like the bagels I've had before. It wasn't my favorite spot but it was quick service and the staff was friendly.
google avatar

Zachariah G.

Yelp
One of the best bagels you will find in the north bay. Spreads made in shop small batch and very yummy. Plenty of outdoor seating.i will be back for sure!

Yelp
Had a terrible experience this morning with Homegrown. I placed an order for two cowboy bagels on everything bagels and after 30 minutes of waiting went back to ask the young lady at the door what had happened to my order. She went to ask the people in the kitchen who they gave my order to and merely shrugged there shoulders. To make matters worse, they continued making the orders for all the people that came after me and made me wait for an additional 10 minutes. We asked for a credit and not only did this not happen, nor an apology was given for the mistake. This is terrible customer service and I will not return to this business.
google avatar

Yelp
Wine got you hung over? Yep, us too. We hit this place on our way out of Sonoma to prepare for the ultimate head ache which is a visit to the airport, hung over and departing our wine country vacation The smell is what hits you first - heaven? No, just the constant waft of fresh ass bagels in all varieties. I got bacon, egg, maybe some avocado and chive cream cheese on a whole wheat bagel. It was soooo delicious and warm and the eggs are definitely not from a frozen bag or wherever fake eggs come from. I didn't feel like the bagel was too hard either like some wheat bagels tend to be. Get napkins - a lot of them - because your face, hands and possibly your hair will get messy. But it's all good because you do it for the bagel. Thank you Homegrown!!
google avatar

Hernan P.

Yelp
Had to do laundry at the laundromat, called in my order of a jalapeno CBOT, Toasted, picked up ready in 10 mins. Tasty as the first time I ever stopped here a long long time ago. If I could I'd give them 100 stars.

Lise D.

Yelp
Food was good. But the line to get your food is ridiculous. I called in a to go order to avoid the line, but it didn't work. I still had to wait in line for 15 mins to get my order. They need a separate pickup line for take out.

Yelp
These bagels are wonderful. I know I am not saying anything new - People love this place, and you don't stay in business for over 40 years unless you are doing something right. Still, I am so grateful for Homegrown Baking and am happy to give them the shout-out and respect they deserve. I have been serious about bagels ever since I was a child in New York, and worked at a bagel shop as my first job 30 years ago. I have eaten a lot of bagels all over the world. When I moved to California 20 years ago, I was resigned to accept that I had to trade good bagels for good tacos. That was the case in L.A. (with few exceptions) and San Francisco (don't @ me about Wise Sons) However, after moving to Santa Rosa 5 years ago, I was thrilled to discover Homegrown's bagels in a strip mall in Sonoma. When I first when to Homegrown, I remarked that these are the best I have had in California and that they would be right at home as a standard bagel at a deli in Manhattan or bagel shop on Long Island. But after having had at least a hundred of their bagels over the years, I now believe that these bagels would really hold their own with any top-notch bagels in NYC. They are that good - amazing fresh out of the oven, and also freeze quite well (not all bagels do). I drive out here every few weeks and pick up dozens of bagels, eat a few fresh and freeze the rest. Their onion bagels are particularly exceptional, and the sesame, and their whole-wheat raisin are also stand-outs. There is a real difference between a hand-rolled bagel and anything more machine-made. These bagels have the perfect ratio of chew-to-snap, a lot of aeration inside, great shape/size and real integrity that you can taste in every bite. Lots of love to Homegrown Baking Co.!

Yelp
This place is AMAZING! Stuart and his team have been serving the valley for decades... I can't tell you how long I've been coming here but it feels like a life time. I would get A bagel with bacon on it almost every day of my high school years. I now bring my kids and they love it. I would suggest the Petaluma Meltdown, or bagel with fresh lox. You can't beat the price point. Also if it pops up again their pizza is absolutely amazing.
google avatar

Jill H.

Yelp
You know when you just get that craving for a good bagel, warm and chewy? Yeah, I get that too. And Homegrown is THE place to go when it happens! Seems like it's a longtime favorite of locals due to the friendly, family-owned quality. While I wanted to try every sandwich they offered, I opted for the Cowboy. It's a BLT with an egg and I added cheese. It hit the spot! The bagel options are plentiful, both sweet and savory. The sandwich options are plentiful, both breakfast and lunch. With coffee and spreads galore, what more can you ask for?!
google avatar

Zoe J.

Yelp
This place has such friendly staff !! They are CASH ONLY which I didn't know my first time coming in. One of the ladies told me if I don't have cash she will give me my order and I can pay her next time. They do the honor system here and I think it's rare and very special at the same time. I have observed employees not wearing gloves when making people's food which is something they should really start enforcing. The food is very good though! I had the summer bagel sandwich and really enjoyed it! :)

Douglas R.

Yelp
Best bagels in the world, and I'm from New York. Favorite is the whole wheat with raison bagel. Apparently, they've moved down the street. They used to ship them to other retailers to sell, I sure miss them because I love a good bagel. No one else makes my whole wheat with raison.

Cristina G.

Yelp
Such good bagels. I wish they had a few more options but the ones they had there were delicious. They also have mini bagels for kids so you don't have to get them a regular size bagel and have them eat only a few bites. Breakfast sandwiches are amazing too. Love the warm crispy bagel.
google avatar

Cicely R.

Yelp
Delicious bagels! A bit on the expensive side but worth it. I love their breakfast sandwiches.
google avatar

Yelp
We live in KC and we have BBQ not good bagels, this place has a great chewy bagels. We got a two egg sandwich with sausage, mozzarella, on a plain bagel not toasted! Killer! We then added a plain bagel with butter and cinnamon sugar...great!
google avatar

Kate K.

Yelp
Very good! Loved the sandwich choices. Would recommend the lox special on a toasted everything. Perfect for a day around the wineries!

Yelp
Searching for a coffee place in Sonoma, during Covid 2020 is no easy task. One place that was open in the Sonoma square was less than impressive the last time we were there. So, instead we found, hidden from street view, in this commercial shopping center nearby is Homegrown Bagels. This, for a native New Yorker, was like finding gold in a mountain stream. To say I'm critical about bagels is an understatement--I loathe the white doughy mess in plastic bags of bagels sold in supermarkets. If you never had a New York bagel, you have not lived. Homegrown's bagels are mana. Brown and crisp on the outside, chewy and yeasty on the inside, they are perfection. We had, to accompany, perfectly made lattes with enough foam to sail a yacht. I am putting this place on my 'visit often' list because it's perfect.
google avatar

Harrie D.

Yelp
We'd been trying to check out some of Yelp's best cheap eats spots in Sonoma, and decided to checkout Homegrown Baking on a breakfast stop heading out to the Delta. We both had the bacon, 2 egg bagel sandwiches, I switched it up with a jalapeno bagel and pepperjack cheese. Both sandwiches were real tasty. I couldn't believe how fluffy the eggs were, and the flavors just blended in very well. I would have like more heat from the jalapeno bagel, but it was certainly flavorful and prepared just right for the sandwich. I'll be back and dive into other breakfast bagel combos for sure. They have a great selection and the service is friendly and fast. Definitely a recommend to stop in and enjoy!

Yelp
Simply awesome bagels and friendly service! Do not miss out, go here! Garlic bagel with cream cheese is my recommendation.

Yelp
My husband and I stopped by for a quick breakfast on our last day in Sonoma. What we found was incredibly delicious! We ordered a breakfast sandwich with the 2 egg omelette, mozzarella and bacon on an everything bagel. We also ordered a blueberry bagel with butter and cinnamon sugar. After talking with the owner, we discovered that the same man has been making all the bagels for 38 years and has never missed a day of work! How incredible! You can definitely tell that he takes pride in each and every one of the bagels. We would both highly suggest popping in for breakfast if you are in Sonoma!
