The 38 Best Restaurants in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland, New Zealand) | Eater

"Part cooking school, part restaurant, and part food embassy for Aotearoa and the Pacific, Homeland is chef Peter Gordon’s (Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngāti Kuri) welcome return after years abroad in London. The cooking school bridges the gap between consumers and small producers, educating the general public on how to use lesser-known cuts and other sustainable practices around kai (food). Whether you sit in for a cooking class about making fish heads into fragrant curry or stop by quickly to grab one of Gordon’s cult-favorite cheese scones, there are many ways to experience the multipurpose space. Find a spot out on the deck for lunch among the plants with a bowl of Gordon’s famous Turkish eggs. — HE" - Hillary Eaton

New upgrade and updates to this location is a A+. Good management team with energetic workers keep this place a buzzing. Awesome prices and deals/specials especially if you're a club member too.

Google
This place was our favorite store to shop on the heels of Covid. Sadly, it has gone way down hill in the last few months. Consistently out of stock products and employees smoking out front like they are on a street corner curb. Terrible or no management. Do better HL.

Google
Good selection, fine service, reasonable prices. You will be asked to donate to some charity that may or may not exist about 67% of the time you stop by. First 10 times were fine, last 20 were not appreciated.

Nice store reminded me of a Kroger good staff and good variety. They also have a bunch of craft sodas.

I ordered a retirement cake from the Homeland bakery at 36th & Lincoln and had such a fantastic experience! I wasn’t sure what kind of design to request—just planned to go with a simple “Happy Retirement.” But the baker asked a few thoughtful questions, and when I mentioned the retiree was leaving DHS (Oklahoma Department of Human Services), she came up with the funniest and most clever idea: an EBT card-themed cake! She pulled up an example to show me the vision, and I immediately said, “Yes—let’s do that!” She absolutely nailed it. The design was perfect, the decoration was beautiful, and the cake itself tasted amazing. Everyone loved it—but especially the guest of honor! She went above and beyond with creativity and care, and I just want to give her all the credit for making the day extra special. Highly recommend this bakery for any celebration!

I don’t know what happened to the customer service here in this store but I come in early this morning to grab a few items. Long story short everyone was so nice to me. They had everything I needed to cook my famous white gravy and sausage stew and my street green beans it’s just like street corn. Please don’t knock it until you’ve tried it. I was checked out by a nice lady that smiled the whole time she was checking me out. And this place was spotless a very clean store I like that.

Google
I do not recommend this store. Prices are extremely high and low product inventory so I typically don’t shop here anyway. This spring break there was an exception, I was told about a promotion the store was running for okc zoo tickets. I called the store to get more information on what this included and was told, admission as well as the petting part of the zoo. When I arrived to the store I confirmed the wristbands included admission, which the worker confirmed with another worker as well and they both told me yes it was included. When I got home my fiancé read the fine print which stated “admission not included”. I called the store to speak with the manager as to why I was told differently, she was very rude and unprofessional. I asked for a refund because that was the whole point of the wristbands for me, she told me no then hung up the phone up abruptly. If you are running a promotion, you should properly train your staff on what the promotion is!! Or bear minimum at least what is included!! I would leave 0 stars if possible.

Earlier this week I was with my family and heard 2 of the employees at this location making rude remarks about my family as we were shopping and then after we had checked out and were loading groceries into my car and looked up one of the employees with black hair and blond strips in the front who made the rude remarks flipped me off unprovoked. Homeland needs better employees that don’t talk badly about their customers and who doesn’t flip customers off for no apparent reason. Very disappointing and won’t be returning. I had also tried to call about this instead too and was put on hold 2 times and hung up on both times while trying to report these 2 women.

Yelp
This is the Homeland off of Classen Street, even though it says it's address is 18th Street. They have a pretty wide selection of produce, sushi, wine/alcohol, snacks and beverages, as well as a deli, meat section and self check out kiosks. Also sort of the only supermarket if you live in the OKC Metro area (with the area called a "food desert" by some!) so it's great this place is here although it's be great to have more groceries nearby. It is also relatively spacious inside, and likely one of the larger supermarkets - although the Super Cao and Chinatown Supermarket may be bigger and nearby. Recommended for your grocery needs if you live nearby in OKC!

Yelp
Very convenient. Prices were a wee bit high, but that's the price you pay for convenience.

Yelp
NOT a good Grocery store, many items not stocked. Also what is supposed to be Fresh produce is a Joke. I'll drive few min more for a better choice of everything. Seriously get you act together, I've seen dollar stores run better then this place.

Lisa M.

Yelp
today I stood at the deli counter for 5-8 minutes, as the bakery and sushi person watched. When I asked if someone could help me, the sushi guy stated, "I only do sushi". Same response when I asked the lady in the bakery . No offer to call someone, pretty much you're on your own. Then proceeded to the meat counter and had wonderful service, thank you! Maybe the meat counter employee could do some customer service training.

Yelp
I always have my prescriptions sent into this pharmacy and it's because that's the only place my medication's can be filled through my insurance and I needed my medication's today and this man did not know what he was doing. He was rude. He was inconsiderate. He was patronizing me. I asked if I could speak to the manager and he told me that they aren't in until Monday but it's Labor Day so I have to wait for my prescription and be out of my medication totally until Tuesday at least and I work Tuesday 10 hour shifts and he told me it must be a computer error and have My Doctor call it in again, I am so unhappy with Pharmacy. I am as soon as I can figure out where I can get my prescriptions filled someplace through my insurance.

Yelp
I've been shopping at Homeland since moving to the area back in 2018. They have a great grocery selection, pretty good prices, and it's quick to get in and out. The only drawback is that their pharmacy area doesn't have a great selection, so you might need to hit multiple stores depending on what you need from the pharmacy area. Overall, a pretty great store. Also they sometimes have brownies in the checkout lane. Some of the best brownies I've had, just saying.

Mannix C.

Yelp
this grocery store is my go-to market. Lots of fresh produce and organic stuff... Checkout takes awhile though.

Colter G.

Yelp
The security guard just dropped his steal sign on ankle as he was getting up from sitting to open the automatic doors. Did not ask if it hit me or express any concern over the loud bang. One of the cashiers with bangs is always far more concerned with their boyfriend who hangs out at self check out some times. Or they are too busy staring at their phone. Never speaks at a normal level either. Homeland is overpriced, but is the closest store in the area to find almost everything you need at one stop.
google avatar

Rachel M.

Yelp
This homeland always has friendly workers. Multiple times their sushi maker has made me a personalized sushi no hesitation, he offered! They're expanding and have more freezer space throughout the store, it's great to see! And it's always a great option for new plants or flowers!

Yelp
I really want to like this grocery store due to its proximity to my house, but I just can't! Since their remodel the aesthetics have improved, but the prices are high, the selections are awful, and the service is hit or miss. Every time I go here they are out of something I had on my list. The last trip I had 4 basic spices to buy and they were out of ALL OF THEM. The meat counter is empty half way through the day. The produce selection is pretty grim. Its just not a good store! At least half the time, I get stuck at the register waiting on them to figure out some problem with a barcode scanning or a price. The lines are usually long, and some of the cashiers are not friendly. Go somewhere else unless you just happen to be driving by and need something quick... and hope that they aren't out of stock!

John W.

Yelp
I shopped in this store location today. I had already shopped but I had to back in line for another item. I walked up to the nearest register. There was a cashier getting ready to start working. I greeted her. A lady walked up after I did. The cashier totally ignored me and took care of her first. I was shocked and frustrated, But I kept my cool and awaited my turn. I left the store in utter disbelief. I was discriminated against because of my race. There was no reason to be ignored like that. I felt like I was treated like a 3rd class citizen and there was no reason for it. It's sad that in the year 2023 people still like tend to act it's the 1950s or something.
google avatar

Genevieve F.

Yelp
They did some renovations since I've been in here and it's been cleaned up. But overall, their prices are high and they have a strange selection of things. For example, they have several vegan cheeses but only one type of vegan meat and not a very good one. In produce all the cucumbers were mushy. In housewares, they had several brooms but not s as natural broom. They did have good wine though.

Yelp
It is truly amazing to see the type of transformation a place can take when the right resources are allocated to it. This Homeland was run down about 4 months ago. I mean it was bad. But with the recent influx of affluent hipsters & families moving into this area, they really turned it around. 5 months ago you'd be skeptical to run in with your car running to grab some chips, now this Homeland is a happening place to be. There is a sushi bar & deli with outdoor umbrella seating for patrons. They really play up the Home aspect of Homeland by having signage for OU, OSU, and the Thunder sinage when you walk in, accompanied by a huge sign that says "Welcome friends!" Another cool thing is that the isles are not numbered, they are names of local streets around the area. Very cool. Very unique.

Lori D.

Yelp
I just left this Homeland because I could smell the meat section before I got to it. It smelled like meat that had gone bad. I could't get close enough to identify the smell. There were very few packages of ground beef & many packages of chicken. I walked away from my cart & out the door. I won't be back.
google avatar

Allie W.

Yelp
Huge improvements! They have really kept up with the remodel. Although it is a little pricier than neighborhood market or crest, they do have good specials. And the convenience is worth it to me. They keep the store nice and clean, and everytime I'm there I'm greeted multiple times and asked if I need assistance. My only complaint is they never seem to have enough cashiers. They should have a better balance of people on the floor vs cashiers.

Yelp
HOMELAND! Look what can happen when a company decides to make a difference in the community by putting money into an existing location! I came here on Saturday and had the most fun time shopping. Now, granted, I was using my parents money, and I was using it to stock my sisters pantry with stuff for her to have when she came home from the hospital with a perfect new baby, so my shopping trip was perhaps more fun than some shopping you end up doing! But no matter what you need to get, I bet you'll find it here. The produce was great, the deli was wonderful, and now we even have wine and beer. There's also everything else you need in those aisles in the center, and a wonderful frozen section. Make sure you have a homeland card, or all those deals and specials you're spotting won't count when it comes times for things to get rung up. Bonus points for being an employee-owned company.
google avatar

Cinai V.

Yelp
I dread coming here every single time. I'm literally mad by the time I leave because of how expensive everything is. It's actually annoying. And the staff is rude.

Michelle M.

Yelp
Convenient but pricey. Personnel are helpful and clean shopping experience. They want too much on the content when you summed it up.

Jupe I.

Yelp
If you're in the mood to have the rudest cashier yell at your autistic child and frighten them, then this is the store for you. Sending a middle finger to this location!

Brandon S.

Yelp
Rude cashiers and looooong lines. There is always only one or two registers open with long lines in each. Why shop here and waste- no joke 20 minutes in line, when you can go to other grocery stores that are efficiently ran. The one time there was no line, I ran in to pick up a few items, mistakenly forgot my debit card in my car. When I told the cashier the groaned and legit tossed my box of crackers across the lane. I love local grocery stores but not rude ones.

Patrick A.

Yelp
Lori McKee doesn't recommend Homeland Stores (Duncan, OK). I shop at the Homeland in Duncan Oklahoma regularly. I take my service dog with me. She's a registered service dog, 4 1/2 years old, 5 pounds. She rides on a cushion that I bring and put in to the cart. Today my shopping trip escalated to the point that I ask homeland to call the police. Homeland is not honoring my rights as a person with disabilities. Duncan police arrived, and did not enforce the law. The ADA Law That states my registered service dog has full access. If you would like more information about this please call Duncan homeland, and ask for Sean. Or call the Duncan Police Department, and ask for Officer Woods. I would like to say as a disabled person my rights under the ADA laws were not enforced by officer Woods. If you find this may be helpful please feel free to repost. Thank you and God bless you. I had a similar experience.6/28/2021 for the first time in as long as I can remember. I remembered that the local Homeland Grocery Store had advertised in the Oklahoman that they had a special time in the morning for seniors and people at risk of covid. https://www.oklahoman.com/.../homeland-senior-shopping-hour I actually had an appetite and decided to risk the trek to the grocery store even though I am on mandatory bed rest because I did not have any food in the house I can eat. After struggling to pull myself into the car this morning and then have to hang on the walls outside the Homeland Grocery Store once I arrived to try to get to a shopping cart or something to hold on to I was blocked from entering the store at the disabled parking loading and unkloading zone after putting my placard on the windshield, sliding out of the car as carefully as I could, and hanfing on to anything I couild for dear life by a huge display of water bottles that encompassed the entirety of the sidewalk in no way accommodating the clearly marked Disabled Parking Loading and Unloading zones forcing disabled people that need the easy access to have to go out into parking lot traffic in order to enter the store. I mean you just almost couldn't have made it any harder if you tried on purpose. Once inside as I was walking down the bread aisle there was a person coughing ahead of me with their mask off so I instantly went into alert mode as I am very susceptible because of my current medical ailments. The person who turns out to be one of the vendors greeted me he was very cordial.I asked him how he was doing and the vendor guy said" I just got over covid" " I have had it twice" I guess I should be wearing a mask" He said "My wife is sick also right" . Then he coughs and grabs a bag of bread and places it on the shelf. I called the store after I got home, threw all my groceries away once I thought about it and took a shower and disinfected every crevasse I have. They didn't really seem to care and corporate got fussy with me when I told her it was their responsibility to know laws and ordinances and my god some common sense. I won't be back obviously I am so traumatized I might have to wear scuba gear and gloves before I head out the door again with the mask and oxygen . I mean crap I was 2 feet away from him when he told me he was infected or was ( as he is coughing) I feel discriminated against as a permanently disabled person and Army Veteran under doctors care and then to be exposed to the plague just because I wanted to eat for the first time in eons.I just don't get people and businesses anymore. And let's be clear I know just how illegal discrimination is.Now I have to go to my doctors office here in Duncan and get tested and hope they didn't give me the plague. Corporate just laughs at me and hangs up can anybody help me please? How can they treat people like this and get away with it? The Oklahoman oklahoman.com

Yelp
Update: The store is going thru a major remodel and is going to look great if progress so far is any indication. Looks like they are going to have things arranged and labelled in a more shopper friendly fashion as well.

Casey C.

Yelp
I'm so tired of trying to get what I need and being harassed at the door by whatever charity of the day is camped out 50 people deep in front of the entrance. Some of us don't want to be harassed every time we go to buy your overpriced milk. Read the room. I saw all these people in front of your store today and I turned around and left. Spent 200 dollars at Crest instead. Get rid of the beggars.
google avatar

Pamella K.

Yelp
I go to this Homeland because I can get my favorite Made in Oklahoma salsa. It's close to work and not close to home so I go at lunchtime. It's usually quiet. BTW, the best salsa is A&J Salsa. I get the habanero & ghost pepper blend, but all of their salsa's are delicious. Thank you, Homeland for being one of the places left in OKC I can get this and for the nice people who work at this store. I think they may be remodeling as the parking lot was a bit tore up. Looked like the store inside may be getting a new look as well.

Mike J.

Yelp
Love homeland and have since before the remodel. The only thing I would change is the uppity mesta park/heritage hills lululemon wearing Karen's that think since homeland is close to them it should be more like trader joe's. Hey Karen's take your ass to trader joes it's right up the road!!!!!!!!
google avatar

Rachael S.

Yelp
Stopped here for groceries in my way home. I was served by Joyce at the deli counter. She was amazing. Very sweet and quick. Everyone here was so friendly. They had everything I needed and the store is very clean. I will be back again.

Hunter S.

Yelp
This place has a lot of undeserved low reviews. It's a Homeland, it has homeland prices, and even though they may be higher than other grocers, it's still appropriate for the store that it is. The staff isn't rude, they're just people working at a grocery store, dealing all day with Mesta Park Karens. It's a grocery store that sells groceries at a price. It's equally weird to rate this at a 5 star joint as it is to rate it at a 1.
google avatar

Jenna J.

Yelp
Please update this place as it is the only grocery store reasonably close to downtown. It could be really great. I'll continue to go because it's close but I do my main grocery shopping on the weekend in the suburbs.
google avatar

Byron L.

Yelp
Not a very friendly backpack store. I am a pedestrian and throw things in my backpack when walking. When I visited this store security followed me around the store and to the deli. It was eerie they way he stared at me, made me fill like I was a criminal. When I enquired about it with their management I never got a reply. It would have been helpful if they had a backpack check in booth rather then asking me to leave it on the floor.

Ryan R.

Yelp
If you want the best grocery store in the Downtown Oklahoma City area. This is it! They have so many choices with a custom butcher with all kinds of delicious meats as well as a Bakery, Deli and imported cheese corner and all the wine and beer you want!
google avatar

Kyla T.

Yelp
I've been coming to this store about a year & a half. It continues to be more & more an experience I deeply resent paying for. The high price point & presentation attempts an urban boutique, but the service & experience are far worse than Walmart. I really wish a Trader Joe's etc would come & kick them off this corner. It's incredibly clear that the people who work here do not understand the community or what it needs/values. Even managers are not prepared to complete basic cash register/customer service functions in a timely manner. The lines are longer & longer every time I come here. Security etc should be able to distinguish paying customers from thieves. Treating paying customers as adversaries is the quickest & most certain way to alienate & anger your community. This store is in deep need of new personnel. People who understand how to create value for the community supporting their business. That is literally how business works. Get better, much better or leave. Seriously!

Maxwell G.

Yelp
First off - this is the closest grocery store to me so I come here just based on convenience. The customer service here is atrocious. The cashiers and managers are so unprofessional, they will not even recognize you when you check out or even bother say "hello" or "did you find everything ". There was one (1) time when I parked and accidentally parked on the line and one of the managers told me "nice parking job" in a sarcastic manner. Today I was walking down the isle at 4:00 PM (one of the busiest times I would imaging) and a manager gave the middle finger to another employee in front of me. This place is a complete joke. I am not sure how these employees maintain their jobs with such poor attitudes and lack of customer service.
google avatar

Lucas E.

Yelp
This place sucks, and I don't get why. With great neighborhoods near by, if Homeland emphasized this location it would surely attract consumers. The produce is dismal, and fresh meat selection is bad as well. Should be avoided unless just running out for a few basics.
google avatar

Deanna J.

Yelp
I have been thinking "this is such a great store now, if only they would bring in dairy free ice cream!" What do you know, I went and looked this week and I found multiple options!!! I love that I don't have to go up to Whole Foods to get vegan cheese and now ice cream!! I can now buy everything in one stop!
google avatar

Nancy S.

Yelp
Local grocery store. Over priced for the most part. But you can get fresh veggies, quality products and mucg more.....
google avatar

Rashad G.

Yelp
Even with the recent remodel the store looks nice but the selection of meat and produce is horrible. The customer service from the checkers is well below par. And there prices are way to high for what you get. Go to Winco or Sprouts way better selection and customer service is better.
google avatar

Daniel B.

Yelp
Beautiful new store. Same awful staff. Homeland needs to clean house or teach some customer service and politeness skills.

Erica D.

Yelp
Their customer service is always shutdown.. I travel across town and Everytime it is shut down.. I needed diapers and couldn't get them because they didn't have much money for me to get monies I received through Western Union.. please fix this
google avatar

LaShane H.

Yelp
I was so taken tonight as me & my sister were checking out. There was a lady name Demi-she has bright red hair and I could not believe how rude she was. There were 2 very kind guys checking out and one of them needed a refund on some items. First she communicated to them so rudely and said "great so I'll be here all night." She then rolled her eyes and threw the guys change in his hand...literally threw it. The other employees were apologizing to customers. I then found out that she is the actual manager. They renovated the store and unfortunately the attitudes of the leadership were not renovated. Employees should not apologize for their leadership. The guys were so amazingly kind to her that me and my sister commended them on how well they handled the situation. All they said is, "well it's late and they just probably want to go home." Not a place we will visit again. I hope someone can help her.
google avatar

Troy S.

Yelp
This store desperately needs a renovation. The staff are great, but the store is too small, it is extremely old and no matter how clean the staff get the store it looks dirty because it is so run down. I hear there is a massive renovation coming, I hope that's true.

Cade W.

Yelp
Only bonus is proximity to downtown, otherwise, I'd never come here. Never enough staff up front. Always long lines. Better options are out there.
google avatar

Tabatha B.

Yelp
There's nothing wrong with this store. Y'all just trying to gentrify everything around here. Good prices. If you want pretty and 8 million kinds of cheese go to the suburbs

Keith G.

Yelp
Usually have one checker no matter how many people in line. Probably the worst meat department I have seen. It's the store of last resort and I line two blocks away
google avatar

Rob D.

Yelp
It's kind of a sad excuse for a grocery store. I found the trip to the bathroom to be quite the adventure through the back storage area... Someone could get killed back there and they wouldn't find the body for a week.
google avatar

Tom C.

Yelp
Not a good grocery store but it fits the bill when you live near by.

Justin H.

Yelp
The store looks great since the remodel!!! It's convenient to our neighborhood for quick shopping, and the also have some pretty good deals if you take the time to shop the store. The staff is very friendly, and courteous.

Yelp
It's been 2.5 years since I had written my first review for the Homeland at 18th & Classen. I still coupon at Homeland and also Crest, why NOT save money?! However I would rather drive to the Homeland on Britton Road than go to this location. The deli is ridiculously over priced. Why would I pay 5.99/lb for potato salad when I can get a prepacked 1 lb contained for 3.00? I wouldn't. Stay away from their in-house salads. I always try to give them the benefit of the doubt and buy one on a whim. Every time it's wilted and the cherry tomatoes are not firm. The meat department is still incredibly lacking, I went last week and they didn't carry any beef rib racks. I waited for the butcher to ask if they had any in the back and after 8 minutes I had to move on. They didn't carry the Iams dog food we buy and it was exhausting to sleuth the store trying to get necessities. I ended up leaving empty handed on half my shopping list. The manager told me they can order things if you don't find them in store but I was looking for common brands and food I consider to staples. I suggest taking the trip to the Homeland in the village on Britton the next time you need anything. This store needs to be a quick stop for milk and eggs only.

Lexy W.

Yelp
This homeland is like the homeland grocery that has been long forgotten about. It is older with no new additions to it. Compared to some other homelands you wouldn't even know it was the same company. The produce selection is terrible and usually unkept. There are no lights in their freezer section doors therefore you are unable to even see what's on the frozen section shelves. It's disappointing because when moving to downtown you'd expect the closest grocery store to be beautiful but it is just trashy to say the least.
