Both People and Plants Are Thriving at This Santa Cruz Garden | Eater

"A Santa Cruz nonprofit that transforms lives through year-long job training, transitional employment, and support services centered at a working farm; trainees develop practical skills like communication, conflict resolution, teamwork, professionalism, and time management, receive regular manager check-ins and weekly social-worker meetings, and often secure housing and steady employment after the program. Participants grow seasonal produce—strawberries, kale, and pumpkins—and the operation includes a retail storefront selling artisanal items such as lavender soap, herbal sleep tea, and beeswax candles. Recognized with a $20,000 grant and named a 2025 Small Business Hero by Intuit QuickBooks and Mailchimp, the organization will use the award to fund 68 subscription boxes for its Feed Two Birds program, part of a broader effort to expand access to fresh food while scaling carefully, building a committed team and resilient operations." - Vox Creative

This is a great project and welcomes locals to pick up their own strawberries or fresh leafy greens and herbs. They also encourage volunteers to help with gardening. It’s a win-win. A great place to learn to grow veggies and support a good cause. Strawberries are in season and they are as sweet as honey. Pick some before it’s late!

Wonderful organization providing job skill training and resources to people experiencing homelessness. Visit the Farm Stand on Shaffer Road or just drop in to the urban garden to enjoy the healing benefits of being in a garden. Hear about people who are growing new pathways for life! Also shop at both stores in Santa Cruz and Capitola to see the products being made from fruits, vegetables, and flowers grown on the Farm!

Me and my group had so much fun volunteering here. The strawberries are so sweet and good. I wouldn’t definitely come back and volunteer again. The staff that works here are so incredibly sweet and whole heartedly are devoted to the mission.

Fantastic non-profit organization that provides job training, transitional employment, and support services to individuals in Santa Cruz who are experiencing homelessness. From a pre-picked to U-pick the CSA through Homeless Garden Project provides fresh, organic, nutritious food. The strawberries are the absolute best, while my personal favorite is the selection of summer squash. I really could rave on about this organization. The staff is friendly, the farm stand is well stocked with handcrafted locally sources goods, and the farm itself is a hard won slice of paradise. That's not to mention how vitally important the services they provide are to the community. Homeless Garden Project, you're the best.

Participating in the U pick CSA for the first time and it’s amazeballz. Biking to the farm to pick delicious produce has become a treasured Saturday ritual. The strawberries slap.

What a heart warming slice of heaven in our community. The homeless garden project has a mission to educate and offer life skills thru using the garden and the soil to heal and grow what’s needed in their relationships. 💕😎 Spread the word of all the positive things they offer and how others can become involved and support their efforts.🤓

Volunteering here is easy, fun, and grounding. Simply show up during hours, sign a waiver, and you're good to go. Its so peaceful and beautiful here. It's honestly a great idea for a date to volunteer here together. I love going on the weekends just to weed for a couple hours with my partner and friends.

Long-time successful gardening program serving people experiencing homelessness. Garden products--strawberry jam, bath products, art--for sale at the Garden and downtown on Pacific Avenue.
