President Donald Trump’s Trade War Has Already Blasted California Wineries | Eater SF

"A keystone of the city's dining scene since 1979, the long-running cafe hopes to reopen during President's Day weekend after neighbor Rohit Singh reached out to owner Collin Doran to help revive the business. To reduce labor costs they plan to pare back the menu and introduce counter service; as Doran put it to Nosh, "Homemade Cafe is rising from the ashes like a pancake-wielding phoenix." - Paolo Bicchieri

Fabulous staff, delicious food and a fun environment (grab a table on front porch). We stop in regularly but on this particular visit, my wife and I enjoyed country-fried steak and the breakfast burrito. Big portions were served quickly by our delightful server, Pam. Thanks! We’ll be back again soon ❤️

My new wife and our families went to Homemade Cafe for brunch on Sunday after the wedding and we really enjoyed everything about it. They were super accommodating for the size of our group and helped to our tables together and ensure we were able to get everyone’s orders in for breakfast before breakfast stopped being served. Food came out quick and was very tasty, my wife is a stickler on biscuits and gravy and she said it was the 2nd best she’s had which is saying something! I also loved my breakfast burrito as it was very flavorful and filling! Was a great way to cap the wedding and enjoy some great food with loved ones in a quaint but inviting cafe. Recommend checking this place out if looking for great breakfast food and service in the Pepin area!

Stopped at Homemade Cafe for breakfast on our Great River Road trip. Outside it was pouring rain, but inside it was warm, cozy and friendly. We were warmly greeted and shown to a table. The breakfast special was banana bread french toast with eggs and meat. It was spectacular! The best breakfast we’ve had in, oh I don’t know…forever! Highly recommend for food, service and friendly atmosphere!

Every part of our meal was perfect. Wife got the Walleye which said said tasted amazing. Everything about my bacon cheeseburger was cooked to perfection. The homemade lemonade has the right amount of sour and sweet, I made sure to get a cup to go.

Clean, casual eating establishment. Pleasant and hard-working waitstaff. Nice menu and very tasty food. Seating both indoors and outside. Would definitely visit again. Thank you.

Google
Great food. My wife and I went here on our honeymoon last year and knew we just had to go back. Now we're here for our anniversary and it's still just as good. Tasha is a great server!

Google
French toast is meant to have an egg batter--this might have been lightly brushed with egg, but it was not battered. The imitation maple syrup on the table was watery. Finally, they serve and charge for bottled water--maybe they do this because their water tastes bad, but it shouldn't be a surprise when it arrives at the table. Given the number of very positive reviews, perhaps this was just an off day.

Yelp
Great spot to come and grab breakfast in Pepin, WI if you'd are passing through. Prices were pretty good and the staff were all pretty friendly. We came in on a Saturday and it got very busy, so keep that in mind. Food was all pretty good! Menu has all of the breakfast diner essentials.

We love this amazing restaurant Great welcoming and cheerful staff and every plate is a flavor masterpiece

Yelp
A D O R A B L E ! Talk about a small town cafe where everyone knows everyone, except on weekends! That is when the tourists go through town. The Cafe is right on the Main Drag, and has ample parking. Can't miss it. True to it's name, almost all the menu items are made from scratch. One taste and you know! The breakfast menu was traditional & yummy. It was unusually clean for an older establishment. I likey that. They must do a heck of a business, because they had a few chairs set up inside to wait for a table, which I had to do. An older local farmer type man was sitting there as well, and he jumped right in to start a conversation. He pointed out different staff members and identified who they were related to. He had a cup of coffee going, and I asked if I could get one too. He immediately got up, went to the counter, and said hey Joan, may I have a cup of coffee for this lady? Not only did he order it, get it, he paid for it too! What a nice man. Talk about a friendly town. My server was equally pleasant, and I must say, the whole restaurant ran like a well oiled machine. Yelp
My wife and I enjoyed Lunch Saturday with a Ruben sandwich with fries at the Homemade Cafe! Good selection of food at reasonable prices and a cute decor with friendly staff!

Yelp
Outstanding service, delicious food, and good coffee. Local customers seal the deal. This is a good breakfast spot!

Yelp
Pretty good food.. The Service was pretty good too. We sat outside and there is bees so be careful there. The burger was good. Price is a little high, but typical for this day and age

Yelp
We were staying in town for a wedding and had the chance to eat here a couple of times. The service was fast and friendly, the food was really good. They have a menu that everyone could find something they liked. The corn beef breakfast was great along with the pancakes. I highly recommend stopping by.

Mary M.

Yelp
Service was friendly and outstanding, from both our server and another one. The food was awesome and the dessert roll okay. This is definitely a stop I would recommend if traveling along the Great River Road and driving through Pepin.

Gin C.

Yelp
I will give four star because the staff were kind but they are not prepared for a full house of customers. This is more like a family run with returning customers rather than out of towner for an event. They have breakfast until 11 which was what I wanted but ended up getting a lunch option. There are tons of dessert with huge portions. The regular potion was pretty big too and the price is decent for the local business.

Yelp
The service here is outstanding, and the food is truly exceptional.Make sure you don't overlook this gem--you won't be disappointed!

Yelp
A friend had recommended homemade Cafe for pie. On a trip around the lake today , we stopped for breakfast. The service was terrific and the food was wonderful. Highly recommended. We'll be back.

David C.

Yelp
Very nice people. Food is well prepared I'd come here a lot if I lived in area. One of the few restaurant open daily

Yelp
I stopped here for lunch during a motorcycle ride. The servers were fantastic and upbeat, and their recommendation of the chicken salad sandwich on cranberry wheat bread was delicious. I also had a slice of caramel apple pie which was very good as well. The inside of the restaurant is full of small town charm. Five star service and food!

Tom R.

Yelp
Food okay ... service not. Ordered a menu item, but server neglected to advise me that I was ordering something "off the menu " (with the same description), therefore I did not receive all of the ingredients or sides included in the menu item . Off- menu item was a very unreasonable price. Server very stubborn, a simple question about my initial choice would have avoided the conflict. I paid the check, should have questioned when it was delivered.

Yelp
Not only does this place have the small town charm of cute homemade signs and other handmade items for sale but the two ladies waiting tables were AWESOME. On top of their game, always ready with fresh coffee and within earshot for any of your needs. They had recommended the bang up burger which was filling and DELICIOUS and a special prime rib sandwich which came complete with au jus! Patty, owner, was personally greeting a new comer to town when we were in. And they said hello to a group of ladies calling them all by name. This is the type of place we need in every town across Wisconsin. I felt blessed to patronize this small business, as everything was spot on. Delicious food. Welcoming team. Cozy, country diner feel. All around amazing! Highly recommend from an "out of towner" passing through. Now, off to the Tin Roof Boutique!

Yelp
We read about the goodness of Homemade Cafe in the Star Tribune featuring places to eat at while enjoying the fall colors. It is a beautiful and relaxing drive from the cities to Pepin, WI. This cozy, little restaurant was busy! It is a popular spot. The servers were very friendly and the hospitality was top notch. My husband ordered a chicken fried steak and he and my daughter both liked it. I ordered a Mediterranean omelet and assumed it was a veggie omelet. My omelet had chicken in it, I didn't like it. My daughter ordered the corned beef hash. The hash was too heavy for her and as I said she ate dad's chicken fried steak. She also requested scrambled eggs but they came out as fried eggs. The sour dough toast and buttermilk pancakes were a hit amongst everyone. May try again for lunch.

Yelp
What a great family restaurant with heart-warming options. My son and I had the burgers. I warmed up with the variety including jalapeños. Fries and onion rings to top it all off. Super friendly staff, and our orders were out to us in under 10 minutes.

Yelp
What a great little place in the small town of Pepin Wisconsin, the breakfast was very good, I had eggs, hash browns and ham, the food was cooked perfect, and the also have a huge Pie case in the restaurant, I think you will love this place if your ever in the neighborhood and looking for a very good breakfast, try this place.
google avatar

Jennifer M.

Yelp
This place is adorable and has good food! We stopped in this morning before driving home (out of town). The food was amazing. Three of us got pancakes. Warning! They are big pancakes. We could not finish our orders, but they were good. The place is super cute and friendly feeling. The staff was super attentive and very sweet. Always making you feel like a guest in their home and not a customer. Would recommend.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch and had an amazing meal. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming. We were lucky enough to come on comfort food Wednesday. I had a delicious chicken pot pie with garlic toast on the side. My husband had the back jam eggs Benedict - dee-Licious! We split a piece of heavenly Reese's peanut butter pie. Everything was amazing! Such a great find; we will definitely be back.

Matthew R.

Yelp
Seems the place is either super busy or rather empty. However, even when super busy, the service is amazing. Food is always fantastic. Easily the best biscuits and gravy I've ever had. Must try.

Mark S.

Yelp
Wonderful staff, great menu, and such a convenient stop along the highway. We ordered a few different entrees in our group all of them were fantastic. The Reuben sandwich is great and so is the BLT. Get any of their pies. This is a new favorite for us away f

Kathy H.

Yelp
Great little roadside cafe! Had a crispy chicken salad and my husband had the cod sandwich. Both were delicious. We are outside - very nice. Service was fast and very friendly.

Yelp
Ordered a simple hamburger and french fries hamburger had absolutely no flavor, no char what so ever. Wife ordered catfish sandwich definitely looked pre-frozen won't be back!!! Very disappointing that such a location can't Serve quality food. Won't be back

Tom B.

Yelp
We stopped for breakfast with my wife and two small grandsons. The kid liked their pancakes and ham. My wife had eggs and I had the eggs benedict. It is true country cooking, fresh made ,hot, great tasting and served with a smile. I do not get down that way often but would stop again in a minute.
google avatar

Amanda S.

Yelp
The Homemade is under new management and is delicious again! A fresh new menu, super friendly and accommodating staff makes for a great experience. Open at 6am it's the only spot in town for the early birds, 7 days a week.

Mary B.

Yelp
Visiting from Maryland for a family wedding and had breakfast with my folks at Homemade Cafe. Oh, my gosh---what a great place! It was crazy busy, but the staff was completely on top of everything. They were so kind and helpful and communicated how things were going along the way. Our breakfasts were out quickly and were perfectly done. Very cute outdoor area, too! Highly recomment this local gem!!!

Janet T.

Yelp
Thank you Patty, and company, for making our stop so special. The food was as great as the last time and you are a definite stop on all our trips back to visit family.

Lynn M.

Yelp
Oh yum!! Stopped before the Laura Ingalls Wilder museum - so glad we did! Portions were BIG - especially my pancake - and everything was hot and fresh and homemade - even the jam for toast! Friendly staff, reasonable prices, and food was DELISH!
google avatar

Rosie H.

Yelp
Simple basic wonderful breakfast! Loved the mixture for the hash brown breakfast. The hubby's Pepin special was a great mixture. Perfectly done to order. Fast, friendly service from a sweetheart of a waitress. We'll be back sooner than later!
google avatar

Joe P.

Yelp
Wow...here is a little piece of amazingness. The staff was super friendly, the coffee came non-stop, the food was outrageously tasty, and the interior was really neat. This place is one of my top two favorite breakfast places hands down. This is a great place and a wonderful surprise in rural Wisconsin.
google avatar

Amy M.

Yelp
Stopped in on way through Pepin. Had the Bacon Jam Burger and it's just delicious! Tater tots are always a great side and we also sampled blueberry pie, and cherry rhubarb crumb. I really liked the cherry rhubarb!!! Eat here!!!
google avatar

crystal m.

Yelp
Excellent homemade food. Clean bathroom clean area. We will stop every time we are in town.
google avatar

Dave B.

Yelp
Fantastic service, affordable, and delicious. I had a eggs over hash brown special (sausage and bacon mixed in) and it was great. Everyone else had nothing but good things to say as well. Can't wait to return to try their pie and homemade ginger ale.
google avatar

Hilary D.

Yelp
After biking from the twin cities, Homemade Cafe couldn't have been more perfect. I want to bike back just for another pancake, and maybe sample the pie this time. Prices were totally reasonable for the delicious food, and real maple syrup. OMG!

Yelp
I initially resisted going to Homemade Cafe for a year or so, based on the assumption that it would be "just like" the previous restaurant that inhabited the space. Boy, did I miss out!! A friend and I drove over for a quick lunch and what a pleasant surprize it was to walk in the door. It was decorated very sparsely and tastefully, not "country bumpkin" at all - best of all, it was cleaner than a whistle!! A truly clean establishment gets high points from this reviewer and nothing was out of place here. Julie, the owner, served us and she is the real deal my world - she is efficient, she listens, she cares - she hums along as she works! Our food was delicious. My friend had a mouthwatering piece of strawberry pie - if nothing else, go for the pie, or better yet, bring one home. I ordered the Reuben sandwhich with homemade chips. Yum. ( She even makes her 1000 Island dressing from scratch!) I can't wait to go back and try more items on the menu! We had friends visiting us from Paris, Minneapolis and Harlem and we all convoyed to the Homemade for breakfast last week. It was so much fun and the food was really well made. Our waitress was a hoot! Julie came over to our table and chatted with us and she is great. You can tell she cares and appreciates her customers! Yes, the Harbor View Restaurant in Pepin is also very good, but so very predictable and full of "foodies" from the city - go to the Homemade Cafe and forget the attitudes and lines. ( and save yourself some serious cash also! ) Go to the Homemade Cafe!
google avatar

Adam W.

Yelp
I am so not a breakfast person, so I was not overly excited to walk into the Homemade Cafe, particularly the morning after a stellar meal at the Harbor View. Hoo boy, was I wrong. This place serves a fantastic breakfast, perhaps one of the best I have had in recent memory. Everything on the menu is home made. I was most impressed with the fabulous hash browns, which were served perfectly crisp and good. My eggs were cooked precisely to order, and the bacon! That too was generously served and perfectly cooked as well.. Staff were extremely friendly and the food came out pretty fast considering that EVERY seat in the place was occupied. Pro tip: cash only. Be prepared. And come hungry.
google avatar

Mitchell I.

Yelp
I really liked this local restaurant in Pepin. I ordered the sausage and bisquits special. It came with eggs and really fantastic hash browns. The hash browns were crunchy on the outside while still being soft and buttery. Yummy! This will be become permanent part of the schedule. On my next trip, I want to try the beautiful pie selection...
google avatar

Niobis Q.

Yelp
Understated decor explosive tasting food. Amazing flavor. We were so impressed we finished breakfast with PIE. My husband who hates Rhubarb had two slices of rhubarb and Sour Cream pie - go figure. Come and have some pie
google avatar

Gianna I.

Yelp
Very limited hours and a bit on the high side for pricing. Service was very good and food was good. But the food could be a bit healthier and still taste great!
google avatar

Ashley P.

Yelp
One of the best breakfast places I have been too! We are from the Chicagoland area, and have a few top favorites for breakfast food there, but this little gem hidden in Pepin was absolutely scrumptious! The "Monkey Cakes" were so yummy and the staff was so kind and friendly, we really loved the clean but vintage interior! This place is so quaint, I wish we could come again! If you live in the area you must, must, must try this place! Such a wonderful homemade experience, which is rare these days!
google avatar

Marsha L.

Yelp
When they say "Homemade" they are NOT kidding! Everything IS homemade! Ate lunch here today and picked up a Strawberry Rhubarb pie. Loved the lunch and the pie!!! Best burger I've ever had (I had the BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger). Everything was fresh and flavorful. My daughter had the kids grilled cheese and had fresh, homemade applesauce with it. They even serve breakfast "all day" (they close at 2pm). My friend had the Mexican breakfast and it was delicious as well, and the hashbrowns were perfect! Go here! You won't be disappointed! ...I brought the pie to my parents house and even they loved it and they are picky people! lol
google avatar

Frank N.

Yelp
It was my first time as it close at 2pm , so we had the breakfast, and Service, and Breakfasts were exceptional...prices represent the product and value.. $8.59-$9.25... Home made Jams, exceptional toast, coffee, and I'll be back soon!! Maybe the best in the area , Beth's in Nelson is the only comparable breakfast. And The PIE..and Coffee!!!!
google avatar

Steve E.

Yelp
Best, darn, pancake, period! Service was great (Alice), food was awesome. Highly recommended if you're in the Pepin, WI/ Wabasha, MN area.
google avatar

Leslie E.

Yelp
Best pies ever. We always start with pie before breakfast, otherwise we would not have room for it. Breakfast is always good here. Alice is a wonderful server she is always smiling and friendly.

Bob B.

Yelp
They're under new ownership and are serving great breakfast and lunch, from 6am to 2pm. The new owners have really brightened there place up.
google avatar

Lawrie Y.

Yelp
As breakfast places go, the Homemade Cafe is one to visit Great food and a very evolved menu. The friendly wait staff and engaging owners always make us feel welcome.
google avatar

Gale G.

Yelp
This place is so charming, the food is excellent!! The service was outstanding and the little place is sparkling clean

Rebekkah R.

Yelp
I visited this restaurant when passing through the area. I saw the other reviews and thought it would be a good place to try out. The menu on the website said that it was just a sampling of their offerings, so I thought I would see more options on the menus when I arrived at the restaurant. This unfortunately was not the case. There were no vegetarian options except for pancakes or a salad. Having seen a review mention they had grilled cheese on their children's menu, I asked if I could order that. The review had mentioned that it came with homemade applesauce. I love homemade applesauce, so I was sold. When the grilled cheese arrived, it was on a plate with applesauce in a clear plastic cup-- the kind that you buy from the grocery store. It was clearly not homemade applesauce. I'm not sure how this place can call itself "Homemade Cafe" and they can't even take the time to take the pre-made applesauce out of the plastic container to put it on the plate. I was extremely disappointed. The sandwich itself was not of note. I ate it because I was hungry. I also came here with great hopes for the pie. I ordered a slice of the cherry rhubarb with great anticipation, hoping it would make up for what my sandwich lacked. The filling tasted alright-- it's difficult to mess up rhubarb and cherry too much-- but the crust was really disappointing. Rubbery and underbaked on the bottom, not remotely flakey on the top. Pretty awful for a place that is supposedly known for its pies. I will not be returning.
