18 Excellent and Child-Friendly Restaurants in the East Bay

"This mac and cheese mecca has taken off since its opening in 2010, spawning a second take-out-only location near the main restaurant, a third in Berkeley in 2023, and a book of treasured recipes. You can have it your way here, with about 20 possible toppings to customize the noodles of your choice, including gluten-free and vegan cheese options. Brussels sprouts and other sides round out a meal, and desserts should be prioritized. For the allergen-free, the peanut butter pie with homemade chocolate sauce will set a new bar for sweets." - Justine Jones, Laura Smith Borrman

I've been hearing about this place for 10+ years, and FINALLY got to try it! We went on a Wednesday around noon and it was empty. Sounds like on weekends it can get packed, so plan accordingly. Can't even start this review without a shoutout to our waitress Bridgette-- she was so full of joy and made us feel welcome. It was literally like getting served by family. The mac... THE MAC! So flavorful and hit the spot for cozy food on a foggy day. I tried the Jalapeno Mac, which included cream cheese. I didn't expect to love it so much, the jalapeno really packed a punch and that cream cheese addition was fantastic. I also loved that it had the breadcrumbs on top for that crunch. The interior is super cute, great for a big group too. Down the street there's also a "to-go" location if you don't have time to dine in. I didn't realize that there are also now locations in the South Bay, but this was 100000% worth the trip to Oakland.

Google
From what i understand this places reputation doesn’t even need a review because of how highly it was talked about but, here we are anyway. As a plant based gluten free person not often (or ever) do I get to indulge in Mac and cheese and holy macaroni this was single handily the best dish that has graced my taste buds. Is that dramatic? Yes absolutely but they earned it. The atmosphere, staff and options catered to dietary restrictions is off the charts. I also got their vegan gluten free brownie and it was divine. You have to go!

Google
Went to lunch here with my mom and we shared two dishes. I order one of the season specials the Macximus Mac with no breadcrumbs and our server recommended that my mom get their Kogi Short Rib Mac. For both of them we got gluten free noodles and they had a fantastic texture. The servings were generous so we had lots of leftovers. They reheated well in the toaster oven.

Google
Deliciousness 100/10! The Kogi Short Rib Mac & the Chicken Pot Pie Mac with their Caesar salad is top tier. I love bringing it home and indulging. Easy pick up experience every time. Love their vegan options too! #GoldenBirthday #GirlPower

Google
My favorite Mac n cheese ever. I keep it simple with the sharp white cheddar Mac with bread crumbs. It's clear they use high quality cheddar, and the bechamel sauce they make is just heavenly. I also took home a Gilroy garlic Mac and a truffle Mac, and both tasted amazing reheated. Homeroom is a must visit when you're in Oakland!

Google
I had such a good time at Homeroom. The food was super tasty, rich, creamy, and exactly what I was craving. I tried a couple different kinds of macs and honestly, every bite was comforting and hit the spot. The portions were big too, which was a nice surprise. The staff were really friendly and welcoming, and our food came out hot and fresh without a long wait. The whole place had a chill, cozy vibe that made it easy to relax and enjoy the meal. I’d definitely go back again.

Google
Affordable and decent. From what I remember about 6-8 years ago this place use to be really good but frankly it’s losing its touch. The atmosphere isn’t all that great either but it’s a good spot for a date night if you’re looking to take someone special out. Service is decent, beer on tap, and I would recommend coming in to try their unique Mac n cheese 🧀 . I had the chorizo mac and when I last ate it a few years ago it was memorable, today it was just so bland and over spiced. Wife was pleased with the Truffle Mac, despite my disappointment. 3.8/5 stars imo

Google
Our family has celebrated countless birthdays here, and we always bring our out-of-town guests to show off an Oakland gem. Homeroom is a true part of the community and can always be counted on for amazing comfort food, good vibes, and being open late. We supported Homeroom throughout the pandemic and it was one of the first restaurants we visited once places started reopening. From vegan and gluten-free friends to vegetarian husbands to meat lovers alike - there is something for everyone here. I am sharing a photo of a doodle my friend made on our leftovers after we brought her and her husband here for dinner. They are from a small town and struggle to find vegan food when they go out to eat. She was skeptical of a Mac-and-cheese place accommodating her, but her face lit up at the menu and we had a lovely and silly time enjoying our delicious dinner at one of our favorite restaurants in the Bay!! Thanks Homeroom for always being there and always coming through!

Yelp
The food here has always been yummy. We had the garlic bacon Mac and it was sooo good. I had the Cobb salad and it was huge. It was one of the best I've had. We finished off with their Oreo cookie. That was yummy too. The place is easy to find and offers indoor and outdoor seating. The seating is very open. The place is clean. The bathroom is clean. The best thing about this place is the service. The service is amazing and will leave you feeling good about eating here.

Yelp
I recently stopped by Homeroom in Oakland for lunch, and I couldn't resist trying their famous short ribs mac and cheese. As a mac and cheese enthusiast, I had high expectations, and for the most part, they were met! The dish arrived looking absolutely mouthwatering, with a golden, cheesy top that promised all the comfort you could hope for. The short ribs were tender and flavorful, though I did find the meat portion a bit smaller than I anticipated. The richness of the meat paired beautifully with the creamy cheese sauce, creating a delightful combination that certainly satisfied my cravings. One thing to note: the short ribs had a bit of a spicy kick! It added an unexpected twist that I enjoyed, but if you're sensitive to spice, it might catch you off guard.

Yelp
SO and I came here midday on a Saturday around 2:30 to avoid the lunch rush. We got seated in less than 5 minutes and ordered in less than 10 minutes after that. Service was friendly and quick, offering us another water pitcher nearly as soon as the carafe was empty. We got the Brussel sprouts, side Caesar salad, chicken pot pie Mac and elote Mac. Everything was super delicious. The salad was perfectly dressed and lettuce was fresh and crisp. The Brussels were a bit saucy but cooked well. Our Mac and cheeses were so savory and filling. We were both happy with the portions- after eating our fill at the restaurant we also had enough for 2 more meals. I've always enjoyed homeroom and was first introduced to them when they partnered with my high school choir for a fundraiser. They haven't let me down!

Yelp
Such a great comfort food. Came here after a doctors appointment and left feeling so much better! Personally I get their OG bacon chicken ranch Mac (not on the menu anymore but they are still happy to make it). Their buffalo Mac is another fan favorite. Love the ambience of this restaurant, the great service, and great access to parking.

Yelp
Drop what you're doing and run to homeroom!! This spot is an East Bay staple, and has always been my favorite comfort food to order after a tough week. The portions are large, filling, and flavorful. Regardless of what you get, you'll enjoy it guaranteed! My personal favorites are the jalapeño popper mac and the elote mac. The pizza mac is also a seasonal fan favorite. The Oakland location tends to have long wait times, but the Berkeley location is less busy. The service and ambiance is great in both :)

Yelp
Homeroom was our go-to when my family moved to Oakland and before my dad and I cut back on carbs (sad). It's truly the ultimate comfort food stop. We've gone for dine-in and takeout. Staff are always friendly and attentive. And we always leave with leftovers, which is such a treat the next day :) Our favorites are the Gilroy Garlic mac and Garlicky Bacon mac - and you gotta get them with breadcrumbs. The crunch is great. Looking forward to going back again to try their new flavors.

Yelp
Been showing up to this place for years, Mac and cheese is my lady's favorite food. I might have mentioned in the previous review how big the sizes are, in this review I'll tell yall that somehow I've managed to finish the entire portions most times i visit, not everyone finish it. Customer service has not changed, through remodeling, pandemics and menu changes the staff is always wonderful! I love the buffalo mac, the Gouda one is cool, the jalapeño Mac is amazing, the kogi short rib is amazing, and the pesto is delightful. I've kept coming for years and hope to continue for many more

Yelp
Great experience always, the vegan Mac is my favorite. Great service, Host provided tapatío sauce each time we requested it (we like it with a lot). Only small thing is the dessert we always get seems to be smaller or just haven't ordered it in a while? Used to come in a mason jar. New look, good ambiance!

Yelp
Homeroom is definitely worth the trip up to Oakland! I hadn't been in years and years and was pleased to see they have a nice outdoor eating area as well. The indoors is still as I remembered it. Even sitting outside, our server was great and came by a lot to make sure we were getting what we needed. I ordered the new kogi short rib mac and it was delicious! I do think I would have enjoyed one of the spicier macs so I'll have to go back. We also got the green beans and brussels sprouts sides, both were delicious. I got a slice of the peanut butter pie because it was my birthday! It was pretty exceptional. There was plenty of street parking and no wait when we went for lunch around 12:30 on a Sunday!

Yelp
A little overrated and over priced but kids love this stuff. Good food, good value. This place is good. The cheese, the noodles.. the little crunchy topping. But with so many carbs and so many calories how could it not be good? Served hot and attention to detail - my favorite part was the brussel sprouts. Flavor and cooked very well. Overall I think the mac lacked depth. I've had better at gourmet buffets in Vegas - you know, the expensive ones that are $50 a person. THe biggest problem is here the mac is the main attraction. I'm used to it being in the shadows of something else more spectacular on my dinner plate. I'm a big fan of variety too. This was way too much portion. Half would have been better. Value is good. I think if the price were a little lower I would rate higher. I just don't like paying too much unless its meat. A meat heavy dish I know is expensive but noodles - IDK last time I checked it wasn't that much. I make my own noodles at home. I suppose the problem is I like my own cooking more. I don't make things so salty and I trust ingredients that I buy more. I think a lot about 'the dirty dozen' and wonder where vegetables came from. These days with Amazon buy out of WF I even wonder about them. I used to trust their hot food bar - not sure anymore.

Yelp
The service was great. I originally ordered the aged white cheddar with broccoli. It came out water like they forgot the cheese. I asked to exchange it for the regular and the waitress apologized and quickly brought my the regular Mac and cheese. It was good. Still could have used a little Morse cheese but pretty good. We also had the truffle Mac and cheese which was very good and the kale salad. They seem to put less cheese in general in the Mac and cheese than before.

Yelp
Where to start place was clean staff was welcoming when coming into the restaurant. When I tell you Mac and cheese galore is an understatement we tried the chicken ranch and jalapeño popper Mac it was so delicious

Yelp
Very tasty and interesting. I've never gone to a restaurant that has almost exclusively Mac N Cheese dishes for a menu. Of course the dishes are topped with things like bacon or Korean short rib meat. I liked it although some bread or biscuits might have added some diversity to the macaroni noodles. Thanks. Gene Y.

Yelp
I was pretty impressed with my experience at Homeroom across the board. The staff was attentive, nice, and helpful. The food was the definition of comfort food, and there are all kinds of unique options! Really really loved the kogi beef mac and cheese. The elote one was delicious too. I'm assuming that you can't really go wrong with anything at this place.

Yelp
This mac n cheese gave me a spiritual awakening. We came in around 7PM on a Wednesday and there were plenty of seating. Restaurant is spacious w/ a contemporary modern design. Our waiter was incredibly helpful when answering our questions about the menu. We ordered: Baked Potato Mac n Cheese - When rich & creamy meet the hearty goodness of baked potato + bacon bits. The pasta was tender and generously coated w/ velvety sauce. The chunks of potato + bacon are nestled in the mac n cheese so cozily, every bite tastes delightful. Gilroy Garlic Mac - The essence of garlic was slightly overwhelming to my liking. It was still an experience to try, but in comparison to the other macs offered we think there are better dishes on the menu. Whenever I try mac n cheese elsewhere, Homeroom is the one I compare it to. We love the variety of dishes offered here and how customizable it can be. The pasta is always tender and serves as the perfect canvas for any given cheese sauce. Come here if you want the taste of childhood nostalgia or comforting bliss for the present moment.

Yelp
Food was amazing and the service staff were friendly and professional. Great atmosphere, will definitely return to try all the different types of Mac and cheese they offer.

Yelp
I love the home room My first experience, I thought I was just waltz in on a Friday evening and found out the line was out the door. I didn't know about the to go restaurant so that was a lifesaver. I ordered the Gilroy garlic mac & cheese, and pulled over a half a block away from the restaurant and ate it. It was rich, creamy, and perfect , the serving size is enough for two people I came back multiple times with my children and every time we sat down and ate in the restaurant. We had a good experience. One of my favorite things is that they have a cookbook which I bought and used about a dozen times and let me tell you the recipes are on point and anybody can follow them and make wonderful mac & cheese. The restaurant has a really cool rustic vibe. Service is good and the portions are huge. I definite must if you like mac & cheese.

Yelp
My last visit here to Homeroom was over 3 years ago, but I was in town and close by, so it was time to give it a second try. Pulling up on a weekday around noon, the location was not busy, and the indoor was renewed. I'm glad Homeroom survived through COVID The Kogi Short Rib Mac n Chz was my order, and that was 10/10. Valued over $15, the Mac n Chz foundation is creamy, cheesy and hot, with the decent portion of short rib tasting tender and delicious. Can't say much about the ambiance, since it was dead, but I gotta say dinner time has to be busy here! I'm glad to say Homeroom out did themselves

Yelp
This casual eatery is known for its Mac & cheese and sides. It has bright simple decor and table service or to go option at "home room to go" a block down. Most recently when I came here with my family I got the crab Mac and my husband got the Kogi Mac. Both were good, the crab Mac was creamy and came with crab mixed in, topped with bread crumbs and lemon slices. The lemon added a great respite from the rich Mac and cheese. My husband's kogi Mac was topped with delicious beef short ribs over a slightly spicy Mac and cheese with scallions. Good Mac and cheese if that's what you're in the mood for. I do wish the Mac was a little more al dente though, slightly over cooked for my taste. We then shared the HUGE brownie sundae, meant for 8 people though we only had 4, which was ridiculous, but tasty, what one expects from a Browne sundae.

Yelp
This place off the hook in a good way! We ordered 4 dishes to go they were all memorable . You won't go wrong here, they're like Lottie Dottie, got a lil something for everybody! Fred L.

Yelp
Came here on a Friday night after Glowfari at the Oakland Zoo and we were seated inside with no problem! We were indecisive and could not figure out what to get so we got 2 kinds there, 2 to go and I believe they were training someone where there was an excess of our order so we got a 5th one! Everything was delicious but my favorites were the Chicken Enchilada Mac and jalapeño Mac. chill, laidback atmosphere and cute decor. I like their togo containers. Our togo orders were still temperature hot by the time we got back to the city! * NEW! Chicken Enchilada Mac: Grilled chicken, green enchilada sauce, cheddar and Jack, roasted corn and serrano blend, and jalapeños, topped with tortilla strips $15.99 * Garden Pesto Mac: Basil-parmesan pesto, Gouda, pecorino and cherry tomatoes, topped with breadcrumbs $15.99 * Buffalo Chicken Mac: Grilled chicken, buffalo sauce, cheddar and Jack, and scallions, topped with breadcrumbs and ranch $15.99 * Jalapeño Popper Mac: Sharp cheddar, cream cheese and jalapeños, topped with breadcrumbs $12.99 with an additional $2.99 for hot dogs where I added lays potato chips as toppings * Strawberry Limeade and Shirley Temple $3.49 each * not pictured: RECESS REFRESHER Strawberry, vodka soju, simple syrup and lime $8

Yelp
If you like Mac and cheese then this is definitely the place for you. Some of my best friends LOVE and I mean LOVE coming here for dinner, but personally I feel like mac and cheese is more of a side dish than a main dish. I did like the Cesar salad I had which helped to cut the greasy feeling I had from the Mac and cheese. The flavor was good, just hard to get over the same texture for the whole meal (which is why I needed a side salad). The service is great. Servers are well versed with the menu and give good recommendations as well. I also think the decor is super cute and makes for a cute photo if you're into that. Sometimes it can get really busy on a Friday/Saturday night so keep that in mind if you're hungry and want to eat something quick!
google avatar

Courtney S.

Yelp
I was legit SURPRISED at how much I liked the pizza Mac and cheese. I was fronting on this place at first bc I didn't like the idea of eating Mac and cheese as an entree but they proved me wrong. My friend ordered the pizza Mac and it tasted like the inside of a pizza roll... with macaroni. A combination I didn't know that I needed lol. I also received a free whoopie pie. Would come again to get that pizza Mac! lol

Yelp
Love this place! On our list every time we visit our daughter in Oakland. Especially love the attention to special diets.

Yelp
My go to spot for mac and cheese in Oakland! Jalapeno and the gilroy mac are my two favorite ones. I normally order to go, rarely eat in here. Staff seems friendly. Always busy here which is good.
google avatar

Yelp
Honestly, was surprised by this place. Super cute interior decorations. The food was pretty good! The crab Mac and jalapeño mac with chorizo were both fantastic. Huge portions so expect to have leftovers. Didn't think we'd have room for dessert but pushed through and the peanut butter pie was amazing! Would come back again after an A's game for sure.

Yelp
This review is for a combination of two visits: Hawaiian mac: I chose to get this because at the time, they were offering this dish for fundraising for the Maui fire relief. It was very cheesy and creamy, I liked the scallions and bacon as it reminded me of carbonara. I just wish there had been more pineapple overall. Gilroy garlic mac: Decent and classic option though it doesn't have the level of complexity of ingredients as some of their other macs. If you like your garlic and tons of cheese, then this would be a good pick. Pizza mac: It does actually resemble the experience of eating a pepperoni pizza due to the salami and tomato, but in a pasta form. Elote mac (vegetarian): It came with lime, and is not too spicy for those who can only handle mild level of spice. Definitely still quite cheesy, and as you might guess from the name, has corn in it. Kogi mac: The Kogi beef definitely adds a lot of flavor to it since the mac and cheese part of it is admittedly rather plain/mild in flavor otherwise (a lot of the macs don't use a particularly sharp/strongly flavored type of cheese). I just wish they had more vegetarian options that were similar to this, like maybe making use of Impossible, Beyond, or other plant-based meat alternatives. Service has always been quick and friendly when I've gone. Unfortunately for the second visit, we had ordered ahead, but they were in the midst of some issues with the payment processer, which resulted in what looked like a double charge on the card of the person in my party who had paid. They were definitely apologetic about it and willing to figure something out for it to be refunded if needed, but the payer was okay with just taking the food and leaving and trusting it would be resolved. Be aware if you're ordering takeout that there is a separate Homeroom To Go building that you would go to for pick up, which is just a block or so away from the main Homeroom restaurant for dine-in customers.

Yelp
Figuring out what to have can be challenge. Mac and cheese a comfort and stable often desired and difficult to find good one. The last and only time I had visited Homeroom was at a Yelp event a while back. It was memorable. So today was the day to pay a visit. I had ordered the Kalbi short rib Mac & cheese and my dinning companion ordered the basil Mac & cheese. Also, I had the ginger ale soda which was very fizzy if you like that. After a short while our orders were brought to our table. They were pipping hot and the middle and bottom remain so throughout our meal. The short rib was placed on the center although enjoyable, I would have enjoyed a simple Mac & cheese and my tummy would be in heaven. Without a meat topping would be great. My dish was cheese and creamy goodness. My friend basil Mac & cheese looked like a big mount of green goodness and throughly enjoyed.

Yelp
I'm surprised at how let down I was by the service. I came off the recommendation of a friend, and had decent expectations, honestly was completely let down. The food didn't have much depth of flavor, and needed salt for sure. Additionally the mac & cheese was really dry, maybe because of the breadcrumbs but that should have been accounted for. The green beans were okay, they had a flavorful topping but other than that very little flavor and were watery. Would not order either again. The service was the most painful aspect to experience. First off, I didn't receive any utensils, a cup for water, or any napkins, DESPITE all 7 other people at the table receiving some. Additionally I asked for a set and was not given any, when I went up to get my own I was told to not get any of my own supplies even though they were less than 10 steps away in the main dining area. Everything thing we asked for such as additional water, napkins, salt and pepper, took a ridiculous amount of time to receive, probably about 15 minutes. The worst part about it was there were only 2 tables with customers in the restaurant. I'm not sure what happened to cause the experience to be so lacking, but I would not come back.

Yelp
OH MY GOSH THIS PLACE IS EVERY MACARONI LOVERS DREAM COME TRUE!! I was at a birthday party where they catered Mac and cheese platters from this place and each and every Mac and cheese had so much velvety, rich, creamy, indulgent and delicious Mac and cheese. Even the vegan Mac and cheese was impressive! I have never had good vegan Mac and cheese before this place. The sauce in the vegan Mac was creamy and rich similar to real cheese. The flavors were light and a touch sweet but they were balanced. My personal favorite was the bacon garlic because those two married together in the Mac and cheese was the perfect savory bite for a garlic lover like me! I would totally get food from here again.

Yelp
Homeroom has been on my radar for quite a while now -- I've been hearing about it for years now and I'm glad to finally have experienced it myself! No more mac and cheese FOMO for me. It's a cool concept and I love that you can add in your own toppings as well. The service was prompt and we received our food in a timely manner. We were checked in on throughout the meal as well. I got the Garden Pesto and it's everything you would expect from a pesto dish, but elevated slightly more. The cherry tomatoes and breadcrumbs complemented the dish perfectly, and I was honestly surprised on how the different flavors melded together to create something so extraordinary and cheesy. Although I loved the dish, it was super heavy and filling -- I'd recommend sharing unless you'd like leftovers. It's definitely the perfect comfort food during the winter time. In terms of parking, there is metered street parking available close to the restaurant. It's a very cozy restaurant and I also loved their outdoor patio! It's gorgeous and it's perfect for a cute night out with friends. If you love mac and cheese, come to Homeroom!

Yelp
Pretty meh experience. Came around 8pm on a Saturday night and there were three other tables occupied. To start, the server was quite nice, but then kinda dropped the ball. We were short one set of utensils and asked for this and some water as well. This took a while, so we helped ourselves to the utensils placed in some organizers on the bar table along the window inside. Immediately, one of the waitresses came out and asked us not to do that as their hands are clean when they do, and then they moved all the utensils into the back somewhere. Still no water. Then we get our orders, and the koji mac and cheese has a puddle of oil, and somehow is still under-seasoned. Not much to say here, just fairly bland. The green beans seemed like they were blanched and then just got garlic oil stirred in - not flavorful. Not worth for the price. Just cook some kraft mac and cheese at home and put some veg/meat on top honestly. There was not enough broccoli added in to my mac and cheese to be worth $2. We did finally get water, but they did not refill for a while after it was empty, and we had to ask again, and there was another wait with 1-2 more reminders. We also asked for some pepper and waited quite a while, so finally we got some salt/pepper from the cart inside near the high tables ourselves and again we were asked not to by a server that came over. Note that after the meal they removed it from our table and put it right back on the cart... not sure where cleanliness comes in here since we all passed that around with our grubby little hands...

Yelp
Been hearing about this place for a while and finally got to try it! I was not disappointed! I've never seen this many combinations of Mac and cheese before. I got the chicken enchilada Mac and cheese which had chips, corn and an jalapeño and Serrano mix. They had rlly good portions for the price which is hard to find in the Bay Area Pros: portion size, variety of Mac and cheese Cons: green bean was lacking salt and would have been better if it was deep fried instead of boiled Value: 5/5 Ambiance: 5/5 Service: 4.5/5 Taste: 4.5/5

Exceptionally good comfort food of mac & cheese. A value for your money and great service staff. Thank you!

Yelp
I tried Homeroom for the first time this weekend and can't wait to get back to my leftovers! Everything was really flavorful and the portions are huge. FOOD: We ordered the Truffle mac and Buffalo mac and we only finished half of each because they were huge, so fulfilling, and hearty. I loved the Truffle Mac as you can definitely taste the truffle flavor, but it wasn't too overwhelming. I was also a huge fan of my Buffalo mac and loved the giant chunks of chicken throughout the dish. There's also a beautifully crusted bread crumb top that provides a nice crunch and contrast to the rest of the mac and cheese. SERVICE: You order and pay through a QA code, which makes the process super easy and quick. They have a clean bathroom and a self-serve cart for to-go boxes and bags. Overall, quick service throughout our time there.

Yelp
Homeroom always has good comfort food. It is the first time I have been back in many years and the quality is not as good but it still hits the spot. Portions are generous and staff is friendly.

Oh how the mighty have fallen. Came here for the first time in a while and it was a massive disappointment. I hate writing a negative review. A few things: While it's great that they have more outdoor space, it looks like things aren't being kept up. The tables were wobbly and needed a wipe down, the benches dirty, and the whole area could use a good sweep. We came during the middle of the day and it took us longer than expected to get seated. The server dropped off a menu and just one set of silverware for me and my kid. An empty cup for me but no water jug. No biggie, thought that might be fixed when the food came...not the case. We made it work with what utensils we had and asked for water. Maybe an off day, and all this could be overlooked if the food had hit the mark. The salad tasted like it came out of a bag with grocery store croutons and dressing. The food flavors were basic and yet extremely rich without balance. I couldn't stomach more than a quarter of my bowl. I am not planning to come back.

Yelp
A lot has changed with Homeroom since I was last here (we have been using the to go option down the street). The decor is now a little more like a diner experience, although there is quite a bit of seating outside. But the interior space is awkward because of the set up. They are not really using the pretty bar as a bar, instead they have bar type seating against the windows but have storage looking containers on one side that the staff have to maneuver around to get to the kitchen area and glasses and other table top stuff at the other end - it just ruins the aesthetics if you are facing that way. I am not certain if it is the norm, since there was a power outage in the area, but the staff seem to run between the restaurant and the to go location a lot. That said, our server was a sweetheart, can't say enough nice things there. The menu now offers a little more variety so we ordered a side Caesar salad to share...you know when the lettuce in the fridge gets a little long in the tooth and the edges get brown? Yep, that was the experience with our salad. Our Kogi short rib mac came out piping hot and was a very nice mix of meat and pasta with a little spice heat that gave it a nice boost. I may just need to stick with the "to go" option for now or maybe they were just having an off day due to the power issues.

Yelp
Whenever I get a chance to come here out never disappoints. Two of my favorites are the Buffalo chicken Mac and cheese. And the Gilroy garlic Mac with bacon and breadcrumbs. One is large enough to share between 2-3 people.

Yelp
***This review is based primarily on their Vegan Mac N Cheese*** My friend and I arrived at Homeroom on a Thursday night and were greeted by a prompt host who showed us immediately to an open table. At Homeroom, you order through a QR code and the food comes out fairly quickly. I ordered the Vegan Make Your Own Mac N Cheese with broccoli and chicken. I was so excited to try this because there are few, if any, vegan mac n cheese options in the bay. The vegan mac n cheese was tofu-based, and I think that's where they went wrong. I was only able to take a few bites of it because the aftertaste was so.... artificial. The sauce was oddly bitter and did not try to imitate cheese at all. As a seasoned lactose intolerant, I know good vegan cheeses exist and I believe Homeroom really missed the mark on this one. On the other hand, their brussel sprouts were pretty good for what they were. They luckily got the seasonings and taste right on this dish, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. If Homeroom switched up their vegan mac recipe, I would definitely be back. Until then, vegan eaters beware.

Yelp
The Truffle Macaroni and Cheese was super tasty, hearty and flavorful. The Brussel Sprouts were very burnt and practically inedible. I love their giant Oreo and would suggest it for any dessert lovers! I ordered the limeade which was the perfect amount of tart, however it did come well after we had already gotten our food. We went on a Friday night around 6pm and were seated immediately. Service was a bit slow and they weren't too busy. It's super easy and quick to order through the QR Code. Since we ordered through the app it seemed like we didn't have a dedicated server and whoever was available was helping but they were very friendly.

Yelp
Look. I am completely biased. Mac & cheese is my favorite thing in the whole world and so a place dedicated to delicious Mac & cheese is for sure going to get my vote and loyalty. First, they basically only serve full-size mac and cheeses with a few side options and some dessert selections. The Mac options are $14-17 i think, mine was about $15.95. And these servings are HEFTY. Definitely a two-meal size, regardless how hungry you are. Which is amazing for me because I am 100% down for two delicious mac&cheese servings! This was my first and definitely not last time. There were so many flavor options. It was a very hard choice but i ended up going with the buffalo chicken mac. My cousin, who's a semi-regular, went with a new one this time, the elote mac (which was a finalist for my decision too) and said, I quote, "I'm not immediately going back to the Gilroy (her usual); elote Mac may have taken a top two spot (for her go to dishes)." If that's not high praise, I don't know what is. Unfortunately that's all I got from her because while I was fully intending and happy to share, she was not willing to part with a bite of hers after she started eating it. Like I said, high praise. We also got a side of green beans which I would have liked a little more sauteed instead of just parboiled, and saved room for a piece of PB pie. This was delicious. I love the creamy peanut butter filling. Some parts of the crust were thiccc. I will say ..there was almost too.much chocolate drizzle and it sometimes overpowered the PB which was the best part. Other than that though, i was fully stuffed and satiated and had half my mac left to do it again the next day.

Yelp
Some of the BEST Mac-N-Cheese I've ever had! Came across Homeroom (Oakland) and decided to take my family here to try their food. We ordered the Tomato Soup (w/homemade croutons), Kogi Short Rib Mac, Truffle Mac and the Buffalo Chicken Mac. We shared all of the Mac-N-Cheese family style and was still enough to take some home and we're a family of 5! Besides the good food, the location is good and the service was very attentive and helpful. Definitely coming back as regulars!

Yelp
Grabbed an early dinner with some friends before a show at The Fox Theater nearby and Homeroom was the perfect choice. We had a vegetarian, vegan, an omnivore and someone who dislikes most veggies so there was something for everyone on the menu. I mean, who doesn't like mac n cheese to begin with... plus you can customize as your little heart desires. I had the chicken pot pie mac and it was delicious. Creamy, cheesy and comforting...with juicy bites of chicken and just enough crisp veggies plus a crunchy breadcrumb topping to add texture. While friends enjoyed the elote mac, vegan mac and a classic plain mac. My SO also tried the peanut butter pie for dessert which was a winner... and last but not least we all shared a nice bottle of rose while sitting outside watching the passersby with their dogs. A lovely afternoon.. we'll be back for sure.

Yelp
Yum! Went in on a Friday afternoon during spring break and to our surprise it wasn't very busy. They offer indoor and outdoor dining and we were seated fairly quick. Our waitress was very kind and very attentive. She brought out our water and took our order. We ordered - classic Mac for our girls to share. It's exactly that, classic. I do wish we had ordered the white cheddar Mac instead. I believe our girls would have enjoyed it more than the classic. - garden pesto Mac for myself. Yum! With cherry tomatoes and the crispy crumbs on top, it was delicious. I'd definitely order this again. My eldest actually decided to have some and she enjoyed it as well. - buffalo chicken Mac for the husband. He enjoyed it so much, he didn't bring home any leftovers. I was able to get in one bite to taste before he devoured it. Not too spicy in a buffalo chicken way, it was perfect. Chicken pieces were just the right size. All in all, for the price and quality of the food, I'd come back if I lived closer. Definitely worth a stop if you're in the area. Parking isn't the best as it's all street parking and actually, where we parked which was just across the street, it appeared as if a car had recently been broken into with all the window glass on the ground. Just beware of your surroundings.

Yelp
I was looking for some smakin cheese, let's just say boom.... Oh it smacked! Guy in the front was truly friendly, as well as some of the crew members working the back. I'm close by them, but just saying if you're a bit out the way, the visit to this place will be all worth pay! Clean in the inside, clean on the outside. Like an Ice Cream paint job!!!!!!

Yelp
Very good mac & cheese! We got the short rib max & cheese, bacon & Hawaiian Mac & cheese! The 3 plates were plenty to feed a party of 5. My kiddo loved the bacon one the best! The staff were very kind as well.
