10 of the Best Doughnuts in the East Bay | Eater SF

"The island city’s best doughnuts are found in a low-key diner. Homeskillet makes all sorts of classics, but the matcha green tea doughnuts and others topped with vividly colored, fruity glazes — including blueberry, orange, strawberry, and lemon — are particularly good." - Ellen Fort

Wanted to get some good breakfast food and stumbled upon Homeskillet. I ordered the brunch-burrito with chorizo. The service was super fast and very attentive. The burrito was so good! The chorizo was very tasty and I love the pico de gallo and sour cream that they put inside it. Would definitely come back and try other breakfast on their menu!

The food was absolutely delicious — every dish was full of flavor and clearly made with fresh, high-quality ingredients. Highly recommended 🫶

Google
I really want to love this place but the food is just so tasteless. When I close my eyes, I have no idea what I'm eating (excluding donuts). The people are super friendly and the atmosphere is great. I just wish the food was higher quality.

Google
One of my favorite brunch spots on Park.Donuts are on point and the service always so lovely. Edit (2024):since Covid, food quality has really gone down.Pancakes were raw last time and tried to give it another go but no cigar. Donuts and service are still good.

Google
Wonderful surprise. Delicious omelet's and Wonderful service. The only drawback was the coffee tasted burned and was too acidic for me. I opted for tea. If you want a great breakfast with great service come here!

Google
Not bad, but also a bit ‘plain Jane.’ Wanted a simple scramble and wasn’t expecting a giant layer of cheap processed cheese coating the top of my meal (seriously like a Chicago style deep dish pizza). I’d order the chorizo again tho, just without cheddar. Food came out super fast. Both waitresses seemed super attentive. Ty for having me and cheers.

1 OF A KIND! Ms.J!

Google
Late Breakfast & Lunch was ok. The French toast was not hot it was warm. The hot chocolate was good! The food came out not even 10 minutes after it was ordered. The waitress was extremely nice and helpful with providing service. The other employees helped to bring in the supplies for the restaurant. In between taking in supplies the employee refilled a water and coffee and did not wash her hands. The cook came out with a hand truck to assist also. Five females and two males and not one person washed their hands. We sat and watched.

Google
This was a great small breakfast location with a decent standard breakfast of hash browns, sausage, and eggs, but where they really shine is their pancakes and French toast. Their customer service is also excellent and you can even grab a doughnut to go after your meal! If I lived in the area I would definitely make this a regular spot.

Yelp
i came here in 2019 with my friend, and i enjoyed the classic experience of a diner like dennys - but more elevated and cozy. i recently came back here again with family, seeing if it was the same quality and it is! i got the eggs benedict and my boyfriend got the classic breakfast. standard price $~16 for each one. i was more amazed how big the donut they have are. a little on the sweeter side but yummy! the only downside is that parking can be annoying so it's best to walk here. if you're in alameda and craving american food come here!

Yelp
Ok. I don't know how they get such good reviews. Average at best .. I asked our waitress about the birds nest - she said it's too much meat ? And she didn't like it . Hmm? Makes me wonder ? The Jack n cheese omlette was good - so was the birds nest- I thought everything was good. I was put off a little by the response at first. I do business and I praise my staff , my products and I want people to be happy- if I didn't like something I would suggest something else - not that I didn't like it. " some people really like it " or it's good , this one is excellent though - it was different . I used the restroom - a weird odor and it's a storage closer too- maybe it was the cleaning supplies or whatever was stored in there that had the odor. Coffee had grounds in it. No biggie . But it's worth noting . The little things matter . I like the open kitchen and the comms were fast and pleasant. The young man that was cooking was helpful and had a good smile. Our waitress was a little grumpy maybe. It's almost in the corner and you can walk past it . You have to keep an eye out for the door. Will I be back ? No. The menu is avg - and I didn't get a welcoming feel. One waitress was smiley and nice then others - kinda going through the paces. I'll try the other places in Alameda or maybe I'll just eat at home ...

Yelp
Good food but some of the servers were very unprofessional but the classic breakfast was amazing.

Yelp
Maybe it's on me for not understanding what a brunch-urrito was, but it did not satisfy the breakfast burrito craving that brought us here. The size and structure were solid, but the only thing distinguishable when you took a bite was the crunch from the green bell pepper. The rest didn't taste like much of anything. Needed salt, flavor, something. Service and to-go ordering experience was good though

Yelp
The food was really good and so was the service! You definitely get your money's worth at this place. They also have very good donuts!

Yelp
My friend and I were in town and wanted to try a breakfast spot while we were there. You seat yourself and someone will take your order at the table chosen. It's a cute, small little spot where you can also order at the front for their donuts/pastries. I got the chocolate banana pancakes and she got a breakfast burrito. Both were delicious! Everything was decently priced and we got a good breakfast.

Yelp
This is still my go-to spot for DONUTS. They always have a great selection at reasonable prices. But they sell out pretty fast, so make sure to get there before like 11am! Here are the current prices as of Jan 2024: Regular - $1.75 Bars - $2.50 Filled - $3.25 Cinnamon Roll - $3.25 Apple Fritter - $3.25 Donut Holes - $3.75/Dozen Mixed Dozen - $18.95 (Raised, Cake, Old Fashioned) Half Dozen - $9.95 (Raised, Cake, Old Fashioned) Favorite will always be the APPLE FRITTER and BLUEBERRY FRITTER (though they make discontinued this). They are massive and so good.

Yelp
I haven't been here in a while for the food, but I come here sometimes for the donuts. The prices are affordable and the donuts are good. They are soft, doughy, have tasty frosting/glaze (though I would like if there were more on the donuts), and they are still soft the next day. Unfortunately, they didn't have a large selection and they were completely out of the apple fritters (the best ones) when I went around lunch, so I got mostly sprinkle and glazed donuts. Ambiance wise, I'd say it's a breakfast restaurant version of a dive bar.

Yelp
Came here yesterday for a late breakfast because the spot we originally were going to had a big wait and the line was outside in the rain. Luckily when we got here there were a couple tables so we were sat quickly. I tried substituting a pancake for the hash browns and toast (which cost the same as a side order) and she said it would be $3.50 extra. I wasn't doing that so then she said they could do a pancake combo which worked for me. All I wanted was pancakes, eggs, and bacon. It wasn't on the menu though. My husband got the Denver omelet. I also ordered a cup of tea. The one tea bag was $3.25! That seems high for hot water and a tea bag. The food came out faster than expected and they did check on us a couple times. There was no honey for the tea but not a big deal (I also didn't ask). The syrup container on the table was super sticky and had syrup drips all over it. The food was mediocre. I wasn't impressed by it. The pancakes lacked flavor and were very doughy in the middle. The bacon was super duper crispy and hard. I prefer bacon that's not jiggly but this was overkill. I didn't even ask for it crispy either. The eggs were eggs. Overall, it was a mediocre meal that was overpriced. It was $38.

Yelp
Service is friendly and attentive 4 stars. Food is underwhelming. I got a burger and the patty was smaller than the bun size, so much so, that most of my patty was on one side when I cut it in 1/2. Burger was cooked to a perfect medium. BF got the chicken fried steak. It was not a pounded steak but maybe chopped beef? It wasn't ground beef. Both plates lacked flavor.

Yelp
Met up with one of my high school friends and had breakfast here. I had that chorizo, Benedict. I wish they made the hash browns a little bit more crispy, I did ask for it to be crispier but it was all still very delicious. The servers were really nice.

Yelp
Nice quaint breakfast spot. Service was very good. We ordered & less than 5 mins our food was ready. Its's like they were waiting for us to come. Lol. Food was good a plus was they had chicken apple sausage. Not too many places have this option. Menu was simple but easy to make a choice. If Im back in town I will definitely return.

Yelp
We have gone several times and the service is always top notch. Staff is always responsive and timely, and the food is cooked to order. The one downside is the seating area is small, making the tables set very close together. There is no privacy. In fact, the last time we were there, another patron at the table next to us engaged in a loud, long, personal conversation that was cringeworthy.

Nalis P.

Yelp
We love coming here for our brunch. Have nothing to complain about our food. Deliciousssss as always!!! I love our crispy sweet potatoes and tots (requested well done). The service was quick and they kept checking up on us. The restaurant was small but very inviting! Of course, grabbed some donuts to go before we're out the door :PPPP

Yelp
Staff and Service: - Staff is friendly and quick with getting you Help - Order at your table and they'll bring the food to you Food: - Cheeseburger: seems like a very basic dish, but this cheeseburger was so flavorful! It was one of the best burgers I've had in a while and I was pleasantly surprised - Omelette: standard omelette with toast and crispy hash browns on the side. Variety of jams and marmalades available Miscellaneous: - Parking is available via street parking and local lots / parking structures - If you can, save room for their donuts! They have a lot to choose from!

Yelp
FLITHY!!!!! FLITHY!!!!! FLITHY!!!!! Everything needs to be Bleached with HOT WATER from top to bottom. I always have personal Clorox Wipes in my Purse. OMG!!! When I wiped off the table, the wipes was BLACK & STICKY. So Disgusting.

Yelp
I have been greedily devouring chorizo bennies here for about 10 years now. And it is always the same, perfectly cooked and delicious drip coffee. Fresh donuts and fast friendly service. Old school diner setup, you can see the action going on in the kitchen. Highly recommend

Yelp
This is my go to for morning breakfast! They are very fast and efficient and always fresh prepared food . They accommodate the changes! Always!!

Yelp
Good food, excellent service, old school diner vide. Family friendly atmosphere. I will be coming back

Yelp
A pretty good American breakfast spot complete with an irresistible display of doughnuts and pastries. Parking is the biggest challenge. There's limited metered street parking, and this is a high-traffic area. Because the front door was kept open, tenacious flies were the second biggest challenge. FOR THE ALLERGIC: Side options are extremely limited for top 8 allergies.

Eva G.

Yelp
Service was good, attentive, and friendly. I gave this place a chance since the reviews seemed good. In my opinion, the hash browns had no flavor what so ever. It tasted like they just cooked frozen hash browns and put no seasoning. I ordered a chorizo Benedict and it had to be the worst chorizo I ever tasted.. coming from a Mexican. I left half my food behind. Personally, I wouldn't come back. I wish I could put my fingers down my throat and throw up what I just ate.

Yelp
The service here is the BEST! Such good food. Always fast. Mo is incredible. We come back for her.

Yelp
Friends and I came on a Saturday morning, we didn't have to wait long surpsingly. The wait staff was pretty attentive, giving us waters and menus quickly. I'm a sucker for a breakfast burrito and for benedicts. One of my friends offered to split a benedict with me. The brunch-urrito was perfect with chorizo. Definitely large portion sizes here. I had half a breakfast burrito and one of the benedicts and was pretty full. The hash browns and remainder of the breakfast burrito went home with me to become leftovers. My friends enjoyed their birds nests. Overall, I would definitely come back and check out what else is on the menu! Maybe the donuts next time!
google avatar

Cristina M.

Yelp
We loved it here! It has a really cute and cozy atmosphere. Portions were generous and we felt everything was well priced. Serves were attentive, warm and welcoming. Everything we ordered was tasty and good quality. We especially loved the French toast. We also got a box of donuts to go and they were delicious. We'll definitely be coming back.

Yelp
Food was disgusting. Ordered the breakfast burrito through door dash. Food arrived fast but was cold and tasted bitter, almost burnt maybe. Very unpleasant taste. First time having an issue with their food so maybe a new cook? Would be careful when ordering.
google avatar

Lan-Anh H.

Yelp
Good service. It's not listed on the menu but I like that balsamic greens can be substitute for hash browns, if you want a lighter option. They had some other potato side options as well although I can't remember what exactly. Overall atmosphere was homey and food was good, not too salty. Nothing out of this world but satisfying and hits the brunch cravings well.
google avatar

Richard W.

Yelp
Came in right before they closed. Although they only serve breakfast during breakfast, the guy was super nice and said he would make anything on the menu. We ordered the #2 Hashtag I think expectations for a breakfast dining option were met - fast service, greasy plates, ho-hum food quality that can hit the spot. The hash browns were okay and on the dry side. Eggs come with cheese and green onions. And a good sized side of ham was a nice compliment. That's all.
google avatar

Jessica K.

Yelp
came here for breakfast on a random Monday morning. A lot more people than I expected considering it was Monday. It wasn't too loud, people carrying on normal conversations at a normal volume. So I could speak with my friend and not have to strain myself for her to hear me. Server took our order, wasn't too clingy, which I like. We got our food, Fancy French Toast was my choice and I was not disappointed. Strawberries and croissant? Yes please. I would have loved to have a donut as well. I just had zero room afterward.

Wendy O.

Yelp
The omelette wasn't made with fresh vegetables. This place used to be good, it has gone way downhill.
google avatar

Delicios O.

Yelp
Learn what a soft scramble is. Learn the difference between crisp and burnt. Cook your bacon and hash browns fresh. There wasn't a lot of people and those items cook fast. Service was great.
google avatar

Alyssa D.

Yelp
They have donuts! The maple bacon one was delicious! Came here on a Friday morning- pretty empty and I love that they have separators between each table. We ordered the Bird's nest, the Haus Benedict and 2 coffees. The coffees were surprisingly good and the food came out really fast. Both were delicious- oozy yolks & crispy hash browns, what's not to like?! and generous portions too! The person who took care of us was friendly & they kept our coffees filled the entire time, which I appreciated Overall a very good experience. Will definitely return and highly recommended!

Yelp
Cute little cafe. Food was good, service was good, and it was efficient. The interior was packed with tables, so you sit pretty close to other people but it is not a big deal. I had

Yelp
Food was great, service was top-notch, and the ambience was chill. Overall, great brunch I had.

Yelp
This is the second time I have eaten here, but my mom and brother's first time! Overall I think the portion did get a bit smaller from the last time I visited, but luckily the food wasn't bad. You can't reserve a table ahead of time, but there is a handwritten list by the front door to write your party down if you choose to dine-in.They had a cleaned table ready for us in a timely manner and service is quick. Honestly we had a good meal, but this spot is not anything special. My bacon was over cooked, but the French toast was good. Overall I think the donuts may be more worth it than the breakfast spread. A lot of people were coming in for orders of donuts.
google avatar

Heather T.

Yelp
Trash!!!! Got the order wrong and the food had 0 seasoning. The bell peppers weren't cooked well and the hash browns were burnt. The onions were slimy and toast was stale. The presentation of the food was awful and the taste was like flavorless metallic. Quite disappointed and also surprised that their reviews are so good.
google avatar

Cynthia C.

Yelp
This is my second time visiting this place. It's a smaller place with great service. The food is good. The portions are nice sized . The food is served quickly to keep up with the demand. This is a cute spot with a nice variety of items. I plan to try the pasties when I return.
google avatar

Yelp
Food was delicious. Service was great! Food came out really quick and fresh. Everyone there was very friendly. It's a must try! Highly recommended! Place was clean and sanitary. Thank you for the great service!

Yelp
A handful of brunch and breakfast places run park street, some better than others all depending on the mood and flavours you like. I didn't feel like cooking breakfast so went out to explore the nice local eateries out there. The vibe is a bit basic but does the job of having a cozy atmosphere. It's small but can sit a handful amount. Feels like not much has changed besides the pandemic remnants that are still present. The eggs Benedict always hit the spot anywhere I go and this place passed my liking. The ham was full of smokey flavour which components the hollandaise sauce very well. I was not told that I would be charged for a difference in the tator tots, so be vigilant with add ons and substitution. Was charged for the free check in yelp doughnut. Place is okay. Would recommended but I would not come back automatically.

Yelp
Nice Homestyle cooking especially delicious American breakfast. I ordered their Classic Breakfast With hash brown and it was super delicious. My neighbors had the burger and French toast which were also fantastic. Love that they sell fresh donuts made daily, and don't forget to check-in because you will get a free donut, compliments of Yelp. It was very busy on a Sunday but we lucked out and we're seated right away. Service was excellent and very attentive. Cheers!

Yelp
Food came out quick and staff were friendly. They do have a selection of donuts to go as well

Yelp
Hubby had a day off from his graveyard shift on Friday so that meant we were able to go grab breakfast Saturday morning! I was looking around to see where we could go that we haven't been to before and I saw Homeskillet, so I thought we would go give it a try! Upon arriving there was a bit of a wait, so we went up to write our names down for the waitlist. I believe we probably waited about 15ish minutes before we were called in. The restaurant is not super small, but it's decent. Everybody was kind of squeezed in together but there were plexiglasses in between. We ordered a freshly squeezed OJ, Thai Tea, a Haus Benedict, Ultimate SPA Hotcakes, and I believe a side of hash brown and fruits. Everything was AMAZING! I'm so happy we went here to give them a try! I'm looking forward to coming back and trying other breakfast/lunch options.
google avatar

Yelp
So I was area for a BTS Holiday Market, @ the Phoenix and so I did a Grub Hub order. I picked up the Original Breakfast and my wife got the Haus Benedict, it was delicious! The sourdough toast was a little soggy, hence not giving five stars. Overall the food was great.

Yelp
I used to love coming to this place every so often. Great breakfast burritos. I have always come with my service dog. She is very well trained and was never an issue. Last time I came in some man (the manager I take it) told me to leave. He said that since my dog didn't have a vest on she couldn't be a service dog. I told him he was wrong and that the law states service dogs don't need to have a vest or anything identifying them as a service dog. He refused to serve me. I refused to leave so he called the cops on me. The police came and corrected him. I got my burrito, which was obnoxiously filled with sour cream, about five times the normal amount. I ate two bites and left. Never coming back here again.

Yelp
Ordered sweet potato fries Still up charged me sent me regular fries Not a single call to ask me if they could replace with anything else Food is disgusting

Yelp
Buddy shoots me a text "down to meet for some breakfast?" I had already ran a few errands in the early morning so I was prime and ready for a hearty day off breakfast. He sends the info for this place and I was kinda giddy, as this place wasn't a big chain nor had I been before. 2 key points for excited anticipation for any OG yelp hound. Everything started off fine, no lines, happenin' spot on heavy foot traffic'd Park St and decent cup of coffee. Struggled a bit with the menu as nothing was really grabbing me, but picked a couple of things to try. Bird's Nest ($15/2*) Ground Beef scrambled with hashbrowns, onions and cheddar cheese. Then topped with 2 eggs of your choice and sour cream. I'm usually a fan of a classic diner plate called the Joe's Special. Similar ingredients as this but the Joe's the eggs are scrambled in. Here the eggs are separate. I like many simple preps but damn, this was too simple. Nothing was seasoned and everything just looked amateurish at best. Kinda like when a friend who doesn't really know how to cook, makes me something. Always a lot of improvement to be had, yet I'll always eat most of it as being a nice dude is a curse I can't undo. I had to salt and pepper this mofo, then add some hot sauce too...twice. And it came out barely lukewarm, so within a minute or so, it was cold, well cold for a breakfast plate fasho. I ate it all, but damn for $15 or so, felt kinda robbed. Ultimate Spa Hot Cakes ($14/3*) Got these to share. I love pancakes/waffles with a fruit topping. 2 big-ish pancakes arrived and looked the part, not too thick and doughy with a deep brown, somewhat crisp exterior. The berries were just sliced fresh strawberries, not sugared or sauced. Also topped with some chopped walnuts. This also didn't arrive too warm. And for $14 for 2 pancakes, which were basic at best, again made me side-eye the value. I think we've established a pattern here. Super meh execution, food not hot on arrival, above average pricing. This spells out a sub 3* rating to the tee. #sorrynotsorry

Yelp
I would recommend for the donuts (Apple fritter) as they were exceptional. The food was average breakfast fare and I probably wouldn't go out of my way for breakfast. But the donuts were really good. I saw there were some complaints/comments about flies and we also experienced some large flies in the restaurant due to the door being propped open. Server was very nice and attentive and the experience was decent.

Yelp
Breakfast or lunch I love this spot. Thai tea and donuts. I love the options. Service is always so sweet and kind. The space is a little small so not best for huge crowds.
