Yelp
HomeState is a wildly popular, expanded taco stand that aims to satisfy a wide array of cravings and succeeds from breakfast through dinner. The indoor/outdoor set-up, featuring counter seating, 2-tops, 4-tops and larger, communal picnic tables, makes it easy for singles, couples and larger groups to nestle into whatever arrangement works for them and start having a good time from the get-go.
You order at the counter and get a number, so this is a fast casual spot, but it's upgraded well beyond the norm in this category. The decor is rustic and convivial, with faux incandescent string lights giving the place a warm, homey feel. They've got a liquor license, so beers and wines and slushy cocktails are also on the menu. You can definitely have yourself a time.
The menu of tacos is straight forward and relatively simple, but all the ingredients are top notch, and the flavors are memorable. For breakfast, I had the Pecos Taco, which was fresh scrambled eggs and a slow roasted brisket that pretty much melted in my mouth. I chose to add some cheddar cheese; it was a nice bonus, but the taco would most definitely be fine without it, which is how they have it on the menu, as if they know something about it
I also grabbed a side of their crispy potatoes with tomatillo ranch. There's nothing earth-shatteringly new about these spuds, but they are fresh and crisp and nicely seasoned, and a perfect compliment to the tacos. The house-made ranch gained a touch of flavor from the tomatillos, but I could have taken even more flavor to make it a bit more special.
A duo of house-made salsas are brought with your order: salsa verde and salsa roja. Both offer great flavor without too much heat, but other hot sauces are available if you want to boost the fire.
This is a great place to kick back with some simple, well-prepared and very tasty food. And the covered patio offers a perfect cross-breeze in the morning.
