What Does Disabled Gardening Look Like? | Eater

"On a tenth-of-an-acre Northern California lot that was once a dumping ground, an overgrown yard was reclaimed into an accessible, productive garden featuring a 15-by-25-foot vegetable plot, dwarf fruit trees, raised beds built to avoid stooping and to isolate plants from potentially contaminated ground, enriched reclaimed soil, a greenhouse with heat mats and grow lights, and a composting area. The garden was acquired after a hard-fought path to homeownership on limited disability benefits, and its design emphasizes disability-friendly methods — raised, close-planted beds for seated tending, thoughtful soil replacement, and small innovations that reduce heavy labor (with friends helping for big digs). It supplies sustenance in multiple ways—physical, mental, and spiritual—by producing food for the gardener and a neighborhood exchange (modified CSA boxes and returned eggs), restoring habitat for worms, birds, bees, squirrels and visiting cats, and serving as a deliberate, lasting legacy of ecological repair and community care." - Brandy Schillace

We had such a wonderful experience thanks to Christina. She went above and beyond to help my husband and me choose the perfect perennial flowers for our yard. She took the time to listen to what we wanted, gave us thoughtful suggestions, and explained everything with such knowledge and patience. Her customer service was truly exceptional—friendly, professional, and genuinely caring. Because of her guidance, we left confident and excited about our choices. Employees like her make all the difference, and we’re so grateful for her help!

Fall festival is trash. Posting on behalf of my 7yo daughter, she wanted other people to know not to waste their time. They've updated the grounds nicely and there are goats to look at, not feed or interact with, but there's not much for kids to do. I wouldn't bring a kid older than 3-4 again. Don't unless you want to wonder why you spent $60 for them to play in two small bounce houses and watch other little kids ride ponies (my 7!! yo daughter was "too big", tall in this case, for the largest of the 2 ponies present). Councill Farms or Green Street Gardens are much better options. Also, be prepared to entertain them in long lines while you wait for the shortest "ride" you've ever seen.

Absolutely awful experience on the phone this morning. The first time I called I was hung up on after the answering service. The woman on the phone said "hello" and waited for less than 2 or 3 seconds and then hung up before I could reply. The second time I called I was greeting by the same person and inquired about orchids. They told asked me to wait on hold for a moment while they looked. They came came ahout 3 - 5 minutes later and said "we dont know what we have right now because trucks are coming in right now. I can take your name and number down thatd be the best thing I can do for you" I said "oh okay. There's nothing on the show floor right now that might give me an idea of what youre getting in?" She said "no and I dont have anyone who can stay at the phone right now have a good day" and hung up on me. She didn't even let me give her my name or number. Can't say im going to waste my time driving there now after this experience

Do not recommend buying plants. I bought almost 500$ worth of plants only to find out they were infested with mealybugs. I brought them back and was advised to treat it with Neem oil. So I bought that as well. After two months of diligently treating the plants not only was I not successful, they infected my older plants. I was expecting them to replace the plants but they wouldn't. So disappointed. Never buying from them again. An update: they did reach out and offered a refund, which was much appreciated.

Got some beautiful pots, and plants for my pool area today. A nice young man named Ben helped me load them! Your pots are beautiful but a bit pricey….$422 for larger one… they were not marked so at the register it was a bit of a surprise for my first visit, as i asked associate out in that area…and they gave me a different price. There were 3 sizes so I’m guessing the price was for the smaller one. Pots are more ALOT than what you pay at Pottery Barn 🤪😉😳 Overall large selection and helpful staff!! Huge plant selection!

Google
Loved loved loved it. We were told this was the 1st Homestead Garden location! It's HUGE!! I really liked it there. They have jewelry, clothes, kids toys, an entire pet section, a fire pit outside and incredible trees galore!!! The employees were friendly and the train garden was pretty impressive too. Thank you all. My Individuals enjoyed the visit!!!

Google
We attended the SPCA of Anne Arundel County Donor Appreciation event tonight at Homestead Gardens. What an experience! Very easy to locate, plenty of parking and despite being filled with merchandise the entire store is accessible for wheelchairs or strollers. The restrooms were clean and staff were friendly and directed us to the event space as soon as we arrived. You can find nearly anything at this store and the sections are clearly marked (pets, kids, home goods etc). The prices seemed a bit high ($35 for a Gildan brand sweatshirt with simple screenprint across the front, $17 for syrup, $55 for a hot/cold pitcher just to name a few), however the quality and quantity of available products may justify the prices. You really can shop for everyone on your Christmas list here! We briefly chatted with two gentlemen (staff members) in the tree area outside near the fireplace and they were so nice. They offered to assist us in finding the right tree and were easy to engage with. The Homestead Gardens is absolutely worth a visit! Bring your money and enjoy finding oodles of products for yourself, your loved ones and pets. We sincerely look forward to returning!

Google
Beautiful nursery but absolutely terrible service. I would highly discourage using their planting services. I bought 6 trees from Homestead and all of them have died since they planted them. I was following their HSG instructions, watering, feeding… but trees didn’t have any chance to survive, because they were PLANTED in ROCKS. The Homestead planters didn’t put any soil, didn’t remove those rocks, and more disappointingly didn’t let us know that this area maybe needs some attention, so we could put some soil/remove rocks ourselves. After the 6 trees and blueberry bushes they planted died, I reached out to their customer service multiple times. It’s impossible to reach anyone on the phone. I finally drove there to speak with a manager and she agreed the trees were not planted correctly. She said she would call me with the solution “tomorrow” but it’s been 3 weeks and I have not heard from anyone. I have emailed twice since with no response. The lack of customer service and care after the thousands of dollars spent on these trees and planting services is very disappointing. I will never spend any more time or money at this place and I will never recommend it to anyone.

Yelp
After learning that her best friend, Kitty Pryde, has been kidnapped by the Hellfire Club, Illyana Rasputin (Magik) of the New Mutants convinces her teammates to stage a clandestine rescue operation of Kitty and Doug Ramsey from the Massachusetts Academy. Amara Aquila (Magma) uses her geothermal abilities to tunnel into the lair where it appears Kitty has been bound to a chair, only for the New Mutants to discover to their horror that Illyana's friend is nothing more than a hologram and they have become entrapped by Emma Frost, the Hellfire Club's White Queen, a powerful telepath. After calling on Amara's earthquake powers to create a distraction, Illyana transports the team to Limbo, the demon realm over which she reigns and out of the reach of Frost. But what if, in an alternate story progression from Chris Claremont and Sal Buscema's New Mutants issues 15 and 16, the team then learns that they could set their own trap for Emma Frost? What if, during Danielle Moonstar's psychic interrogation of a few low-level employees, they discover that the White Queen is a sucker for the holidays, especially Halloween and Christmas, and that teleporting themselves to Homestead Gardens in Davidsonville, Maryland, could provide all of the disruptions they need to negate the White Queen's most powerful weapon: her focused mind? Frost might find her lavish tastes torn into infinite directions, from the touchy-feely animal books that could lull young toddler mutant recruits to sleep to the Beatrix Potter-like dining sets that could enchant their distrusting yet nostalgic guardians; from the individually-crafted, kaleidoscopically-colored puppets that could entertain homesick adolescents to the visually-radiant and climatologically-resilient mums, whose scented whispers could soothe teenage lasses who seek something to take care of; and, suddenly, Amara's tunneling skills and Illyana's teleporting prowess might completely escape Frost's notice.

Yelp
Personnel are extremely unprofessional and rude. After emptying my cart with my family, an employee was pushing 6 carts up the hill. I asked if I could jump my cart on the end and he said no, you can leave it here. I said ok, no problem but, as he lost control of 6 carts, I moved in his direction to help. He looks at me and said get the "****" away from me bro. Just do better. If you hate your job so much, move on. Employee wearing white and red shoes with an I skip leg days attitude.

Rhonda W.

Yelp
Customer service is lacking. After walking around for 20 minutes the person who was assigned to help me basically pointed to one option she thought would work and walked away. She seemed a bit rushed and not friendly. Take your money elsewhere.

Yelp
Let me preface, we go to Homestead a lot. We have not been to the Fall Festival in years. Our son in now 17, going to college next year, so we thought it would be fun to go to the Festival one last time. We had not been since he was probably 8 or 9, It used to be a)free, and b) fun. It is now neither. We began by buying our wristbands (did not see any prices posted, but just bought 3 adults. $45 for the three of us. WOW. Ok, but maybe it is worth it ? Spoiler alert....It was not. The cashier, who was about 15 YO, had a Never Surrender MAGA sweatshirt. Great Start...We get in, look around the shop as usual, noting that they now have several Right Wing/Maga type products, like some hot sauce stuff, MADE FOR PATRIOTS !!! Jesus Christ. We finally make it to the entrance of the festival in the West Field. To get there had to walk past the couple of food trucks (that were outside of the paid area). Immediately assaulted by the Anderson Window vendor inside the paid area. The largest tent in the West area was a first aid tent. There was a wine vendor, beer vendor and maybe 5 areas for little kids like the slide. So, wife gets a wine, we get on the hayride for the East Field. After 20 minutes of waiting for the tractor, we take a bone jarring ride to the West Field. This was worse. Two large sandboxes. A closed BBQ food truck and a BBQ operating, but no Smoke ? odd. Bottom line, Homestead has turned the fall festival into a cash grab. I hope that $45 goes a long way, as I will not be spending any more money at Homestead Gardens. Complete Rip off.

Yelp
I love this place! A great selection of garden and houseplants, accessories, gift items, etc. as I live in an apartment, I pretty much stick to their houseplant selection. Some reviews here mention high prices, but every plant Ive brought home has been in excellent condition. I'd rather pay a bit more for a healthy plant than buy a plant at a cheaper price elsewhere, only to have the plant quickly die. Service is great, too; staff is always friendly and helpful.

Yelp
What happened to this place? I haven't been in years but it's overpriced as hell now.

Yelp
Always bursting with color and delightful fragrances, Homestead Gardens is a treat for the senses as well as the soul. And very helpful staff.

Kelcie C.

Yelp
Great garden center that has many options to choose from, events, animals and shopping.

Yelp
If you are looking for gardening items, pet items, plants, or seasonal items this is your spot ! They also have Burbenders come on Saturday's to do knife sharpening. The biggest downside is some of their items are super expensive (especially most of their pet items compared to your other pet stores). With that even though some of their plant options may be pricey it is probably one of the best quality I have seen so I would say it's worth it ! The staff are very friendly and helpful!

Carmen Lopez R.

Yelp
Rude staff, more distracted than thoughtful. At that price, no-can-do. Won't be returning.

Yelp
Used to be a great nursery Now no one is very helpful or interested I was looking for a specific plant and 3 different "nursery " employees just pointed-couldn't answer my questions about the plant or alternatives. Go to Sun Nursery- they know their stuff and very helpful

Lisa K.

Yelp
Selection of plants (and also decor) is amazing. The folks working the floor are very knowledgeable, just difficult to find, but once you do get a hold of someone they can be very helpful. Some of our best purchases for our outdoor entertaining have been from HG. I'm so glad that there's a Severna Park store now, I just wish it was as big as the original store.

Yelp
This is great place to stop only (especially if you're headed over to Chads BBQ next down the road, yum). Their selection is really good. I will say, some plants you'll overpay for. But they have all the basics you could want, good sizes and very healthy condition. I will pay a bit more for the health and larger size plant! If you're looking for rare finds, you'll be disappointed but for a starter or for basics this is great. Skip buying the pots here though, far overpriced. I will definitely pop back in sometime!

Yelp
Unbelievably huge greenhouse garden. Firstl time in this garden and i am brown away by how huge it qas, literally ypu can get lost in there, the section are and selections are very good. I have found more plants and pet's products there than any other nursery and garden i have ever been too, even though I have been to big places but the selection there takes the prize.. Check out staff are pretty friendly and fast working staff are helpful and friendly.. Definitely will go back...

Yelp
I was very disappointed with recent purchases from this nursery. About three weeks ago i bought two large hanging baskets of new guinea impatiens at about $38/each. I took them home and placed them in my front yard. Immediately afterwards they drooped exceedingly even after daily watering. I think they may have been completely root bound and unable to absorb water and should not have been sold to me. I called and left a message for Homestead Garden, explaining my problem and asking if they had any advice or would offer store credit or a replacement product. I never received a call back. I also put a message on their website via a portal type of service and I explained the situation and asked for follow up but have not gotten any response though it's has been several weeks I think if you pay a premium price for a product you deserve better service and a better product; I will not be going back to this nursery.

Yelp
A wonderful greenhouse and garden center! It's huge for starters with a gigantic selection. I'm writing this during the covid-19 pandemic and they were doing a very excellent job requiring masks and social distancing. They had signs and markers throughout the store reminding customers. They do a great job putting the varieties of plants together and separate shade plants, natives, pollinator friendly, etc. They actually even have food trucks if you get peck-ish.

Yelp
Homestead Gardens: A large retailer that sells everything for the garden, deck and patio and some delightful gifts. I'm a regular at Homestead Gardens in Severna Park but I had not been to the Davidsonville location in many years. Searching for inspiration for new landscaping, my husband and I ventured to Homestead Gardens. Needless to say, the selection of plants, shrubs and trees that are friendly to the area's hardiness zone of 7a was plentiful and well organized. Plus, everything looked very healthy. But plants, shrubs and trees are just the beginning at this garden center and home store. Here are some of the items that I admired during my visit: - quality ceramic pots - cute little chicks that will grow to lay eggs - high end patio furniture - local-ish gourmet spreads and jellies - scarves and jewelry - beautiful Caspari paper napkins - Maryland inspired artwork - fancy dog treats (and I don't even have a dog) With so much good stuff to look at I needed to refuel and I was glad to find the coffee kiosk in the parking lot. There is also a BBQ food truck on site currently. Homestead Gardens can get very busy so my recommendation for serious shoppers is to get there early before there are bottlenecks of people and various obstacles. Otherwise, it can be tricky to steer a loaded cart around the store. The prices at Homestead Gardens are certainly higher than other places but I feel like you get what you pay for which is quality items, customer service and the overall experience.

Jenna H.

Yelp
First off, we love the Homestead Gardens store. Always has the greatest stuff. Further, we hired the Design Center designers to redesign our front yard plants. We put our trust in Janey and her eye and she did a great job with the layout and plant choice. The crew was fantastic. They were timely, efficient, knowledgeable, tidy, and took extra time to clean up afterwards. Great experience, very competitive prices and tons of experience.

Abigail H.

Yelp
Huge plant nursery. IMO Maryland is not so great with its nurseries, so this is a must. Homestead Gardens has a nice selection of outdoor/indoor plants, pots, and other decor. I came here and found a huge selection of houseplants, and the good thing was that they had a variety of sizes. That helped me with my budget.

Yelp
Having grown up in Davidsonville, I've been a frequenter of Homestead Gardens since as far back as I can remember (or my mother has, anyway, and I came along). As I grew up, I turned to Homestead for special events, like providing the flowers for our wedding. Here is my only issue with HG: they are so expensive on certain items. Do you get what you pay for? Yeah, for sure. But, as a savvy shopper, I can find many of the same items at other stores or online for less. That isn't to say that they don't have good sales, and their insight and advice on all things green is beyond compare. They are professional, but approachable. Also, speaking of our wedding, they actually started delivering them to the wrong address, even though the church was only 1/4 mile away from their location. Fortunately, they came back and arrived in time, but it was a bit of a head-scratcher. Still, given the opportunity, I would absolutely buy from them again for any wedding or special event. We go back every year for their Fall and Christmas decorations, especially in December when they have a spectacular light show and amazing train set for kids of all ages. They really put a lot of energy into their displays, and it shows. It's simply not the holidays without a trip to HG to see the trees, the trains, the lights, and the decorations. I only wish Ellie (the cat) was less shy. She's a cutie, and fairly friendly if you're quiet and let her approach you. (Seriously, be nice to the cat). It's a legend in D-ville, and it is the anchor that keeps the town on the map.

Yelp
Great selection in plants and even pet supplies! The staff were all fresh as well. I must say they have the largest Nursery with a wide selection in the area.
google avatar

Gary H.

Yelp
We do love this garden center. It is actually more than a garden center, it is a destination to be honest. It has Llamas, a play ground for birthdays, a huge area in the back if you wanted to rent a tent and have a party....it has a giant coy pond...and even a clothing boutique - air conditioned. The coffee shop is great. They serve Chesapeake Bay Roasting Company brand. I partially like the Weber grill section. The "Grill guy" is great. He gives great advice on the grills and cooking. Many of the staff recognize us and say hello each time we visit. They ask how some of the plants we purchased are doing. We even started a bonsai garden indoors from there. I love this place. I can't wait to see their Christmas decorations!

Yelp
This is one of our favorite little spots in the fall/holiday season! Their fall festival they host on weekends is adorable for kids.. and last year they had the best BBQ! Most of the activities are best for young kids, but we walked around, looked at what they had to offer and got some food. The apple cider and apple cider donuts are great. What we really loved is the knife sharpener that sets up shop there. His prices are great, he did a wonderful job, and he was very nice to talk to. We also end up coming here close to the holidays for some gift ideas for those that are hard to shop for- maybe a classy glass ornament. One of my favorites is that they have gorgeous dog ornaments so we bought chocolate lab ornaments for our family members with sweet labs! They were a hit! I saw some reviews posting about prices of the plants and other services... this is definitely a specialty shop and nursery so I would expect that if I came to them for those items, that would be reflected in the price. Overall, a great little stop for some good gift browsing with some extra perks!

Yelp
I think this company just got too big and they don't care if they give you lousy service. The grandson of the owner works there and treats customers badly. No one does what they say their going to do. You can call and call and good luck getting someone to help you. They're ok to buy plants from but the rest I'd stay away from. Bad business.
google avatar

C J.

Yelp
Nice selection of houseplants, but the staff didn't seem to know much about plants and didn't seem to want to be disturbed. That's disappointing, but the major disappointment came when I brought two very pricey plants home only to discover days later that both were completely infested with pests--worst I've ever seen. Btw, there was also NO social distancing at all the day I was there; folks were crowding all around like the old days.
google avatar

Yelp
Homestead is a great place and they have everything you could possibly want for you home decorations. The only bad thing is the prices if you want something wait tell the end of the season and you will get it for over 75% off. If they would just bring down the prices they would sell more and not have to discount the stuff at the end of the season.

A S.

Yelp
Today, October 25th, 2020, I went to Homestead Gardens to purchase pumpkins with my family, including my two young children. We went to the back of the store where the plants and flowers are and saw an older woman wearing a lime green Homstead Gardens sweatshirt and apron speaking with another customer, who happened to be White. After they were finished speaking, I approached the older woman on staff to ask her where I could find the pumpkins. I asked her three times where I could find the pumpkins with no response. She just stared at me and then walked away from me without saying a word. I happen to be Black. My family has been visiting this nursery for years and have had overwhelmingly positive experiences with staff. But this experience had really soured us. It is really disheartening that someone would treat me and my family this way when we were simply trying to purchase pumpkins for our children for Halloween like many other American families this time of year. We appreciate the young lady on staff who was in the back office and witnessed the event. She spoke with us and tried to clean up the situation, and told us where to find the pumpkins. We asked her what was wrong with the older woman and she told us she didn't know but that the woman worked on Christmas decorations and floral arrangements. I can't say whether we will be returning here in the future. Black patrons should be treated with equal respect and customer service as White patrons. That should be a given. It's disgraceful that this older staff member felt otherwise. We are all human beings who are deserving of dignity and respect. Racism and discrimination is a sin against God.

Kuj P.

Yelp
Tons of selection when it comes to plants!!! Also, prices were about average and the service was pretty good.

Steven G.

Yelp
They have a great selection of plants. They also have every possible gardening tool or supply that you might need. Having said that, however, I was unhappy with the staff's lack of helpfulness and the outrageous prices. The staff seemed to do their utmost to avoid customers. Home Depot on Defense Highway in Parole is a better choice.

Yelp
Plant lovers paradise! Beautiful seasonal flowers but their houseplants section and variety of pots can't be beat. Could wander this place for hours!

Yelp
I think we have all said about one place or another, "I'm never shopping there again!" but it rarely sticks and you find yourself forgetting, if not forgiving. I'm on year two of this with Homestead Gardens and I can't see my self getting over it. It the only company I have found I must stick to such a vow. This is mainly due to the fact that I gave them two chances to engage with me, by writing to them, to work something out and they ignored me. They just don't care. They done car about a customer that has spent thousands with them in the past five or so year...so I guess they don't care about any customers. They overcharged me for a Christmas tree by $100 and I didn't notice it until I was home. I thought no big deal; signs and register scanning can get out of sync but Homestead will make it right when I point it out to them. I went back a week later, checked the sign to make sure my memory wasn't faulty and brought my receipt up to the service counter. They said I had to bring the tree back for them to refund me the money. A tree that was already up at my house. I asked for a manager when their clerk gave me this advice, as this clerk must just not be aware of how to resolve. Manager seemed irritated and just said I had to bring it back. They were counting on me not wanting to undecorated and bring the tree in. And they were right, I wasn't going to do that. I should have. I hate myself for not but not only for the $100 but the entire amount and gave them back their tree that, within two short years has significant flaws. I put up with their high prices because of their selection and displays and I thought it gave me superior service. It didn't. Why am I writing this now, two years later? Because it's Christmas tree buying time and you should know. Plus I am putting my $800 Christmas tree up that should have been $700 and thus I am reminded every year around this time of how Homestead Garden cheated me out of $100. Just know you are playing higher prices that doesn't come with the expectation they will take care of you. They don't care about you. Only your money.
google avatar

Lisa R.

Yelp
Our incredibly beautiful Christmas Tree bought from Homestead Gardens. Most of the the ornaments are from there too! It was so difficult to take it down, but trust me, we kept it up for a long time after Christmas! I love Homestead Gardens! Always have, always will!

Yelp
I've become a bit obssesed with houseplants, plus this year I am growing a few flowers on my balcony, so I will drive great distances to explore various nurseries & garden centers. I remember having come to Homestead YEARS (at least 15) ago with friends in December to see all the Christmas stuff, and I recalled it being very large. What I loved here was the gigantic selection of plants. In particular the selection of annuals was great. What I didn't care for was that some of the plants did not look well cared for. I ended up buying only one outdoor plant, but also some supplies - soil, a pot, and two awesome plant stands that I immediately fell in love with and NEEDED to have (and were also a bit cheaper than similar ones I've seen elswhere). Some of the houseplant prices were a bit high, but pricewise other things seemed comparable to what I've seen elsewhere. It may also be challenging to get some help here; I spent about 2 hrs in the store, and no one asked me if I needed any assistance, and some of the employees stocking and watering looked like that's all they did. I did also love the three signs they had up outdoors--listing flowers that bees, butterflies & hummingbirds are attracted to. Overall a fun place to explore, and one that I will visit again in the future even though quality wasn't quite I would like it to be.
google avatar

Sharon W.

Yelp
In the spirit of the season this review is based mainly on their holiday merchandise. We don't live very close to Homestead Gardens so have only visited the garden center once or twice. The variety of perennials and annuals was impressive. I bought some plants for around the pond and they didn't fare very well, but it could have been because they were not getting full sun. But what really impressed me were their seasonal displays. Holiday ornaments and decorations everywhere. Bright and sparkly, all sizes and colors, they are scattered throughout the store. There are even unique items--purple aluminum Christmas tree anyone? And then the outdoor display. We went to Thanksgiving dinner in Edgewood. On our way home we came around a slight bend in the road and were greeted by thousands of thousands of glittering, colorful lights. It's as if every tree on the property is covered in lights, and then some. The gates were closed for the holiday, but some cars were pulling to the side of the road to take pictures. I'm hoping we have a reason to go back to that area to visit relatives and to see the holiday display again!

Yelp
Attended a llama birthday party for one of Chickadee's friends here recently. For $150, parents can rent the party room in the llama barn for a 90-minute gig. This includes time in the barn and pastures with the aforementioned llamas, an opportunity to feed the chickens, a game of pin the tail on the llama, and two llama crafts (coloring and making llama ears with REAL llama fur!). The party room was a little spartan but suitable for the purpose (think concrete floors and metal folding chairs). There is a bathroom in the barn but no changing table. We arrived fashionably late, and that was fine with Chickadee, I think. There's only so many llama-related activities that one can handle in an afternoon. Price seems a little steep for such a short time (that, and the fact that parents have to provide snacks/cake as well). Thankfully, the llamas didn't spit on any of the rug rats, and everyone seemed to have a good time.

Megan M.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place! The plants are healthy and varied. Last year I searched high and low for a large clumping bamboo and was able to find it here. This year I have been trying to find evergreens at a more mature size that I can trim to trees for my city patio. I had several to decide between at the Davidsonville site. I feel like I found a gold mine. Thank goodness my Fiat is a convertible. The person who took my purchase even saw me loading and rushed out to lift and lower the plants into my back seat so I didn't have to struggle to drag them in. I just can't say enough about the quality, selection, and service at this store.

Yelp
During the spring, if you have a plant need, then Homestead Gardens has the plant you want. In the fall, they still have good selections but the variety and choices are small. Other Yelpers have claimed the prices are a mite steep and common plants one can find in the DIY stores sell for close to double the price at Homestead Gardens. I had not experienced this until this past weekend. 1-quart Asters sold for $12.99 and three hours later I was in Lowe's and the same plant, same sized pot, from the same supplier, was selling for $6.89. This year we have created eight large potted plant displays and over 15 small plant displays. The garden looks great and the front of the house is in continuous bloom and color. The employees are helpful and knowledgable. I'm a Fan...

Yelp
EXTREMELY overpriced. I travel to plant nurseries and big box stores across the DMV on a regular basis and this place is by far the most outrageous in terms of pricing. For example, let's discuss their houseplants. You can get a hanging basket of pothos or scindapsus for around 15 dollars at your local Lowe's or Home Depot - same plant, same plant size (if not larger), same container size. At Homestead Gardens, be prepared to pay 30-50 dollars. Another example - you can get cacti/succulents in 20" pots at Lowe's or Home Depot for around 20-30 dollars. At Homestead, you'll pay anywhere from 40-60 dollars. I saw a San Pedro cactus there for $59.99 and they have sold the same cactus, same size, same condition at Lowe's or Home Depot for $24.95. If you live in one of those huge mansions near by, I guess it makes sense to spend (waste?) all that extra money on something you can get elsewhere ...

Yelp
I recently purchased a River Birch from this nursery. The purchase process was seamless, and the staff were very helpful. It took roughly a week for my tree to be delivered which was the start of a nightmare. As I stated my Birch arrived a week later. When I seen my tree, I immediately noticed that the leaf's were no longer vibrant and green but yellow. I asked the gentleman that delivered and planted my tree if the tree had been water in between time and he assured me that it had and continued to say that the holding area for the trees are watered daily. Keeping hope alive, I figured that once I began watering the tree as explained, the tree would stabilize and everything would be fine. The next day when I woke up, all the yellow leaf's fell to the ground but again I thought this was normal. After a week of constant watering, I noticed that even after watering the tree all the leaf's began to yellow and the tree just simply looked bad. I Called Homestead to report the health of the tree. I paid $250 for the tree and roughly $200 to have it planted. Homestead will give you a warranty, but they don't really want you to use it. As soon as I called and requested a new tree, I was told that the tree died because it wasn't being watered. I tried to explain that I watered the tree more than required and this idiot kept repeating the same crap over and over again and even had the audacity to ask me why I thought the tree had died. He immediately started point the finger when in fact from day 1 the tree arrived stressed, and water deprived a week later. In the end I received a new tree but I will never do business with this nursey ever again. My late husband and I were faithful customers of Ronny's and they would have never allowed a tree to leave their nursery half dead. With today economy, I still wish prosperity for Homestead but if they want to stay in business their customers are the reason, they are able to operate. In the future, please listen to your customers, be kind and courteous.

Yelp
I've been here a number of times, usually without incident. Sure, there was the time they overcharged me for birdseed or the times they wouldn't honor coupons because I had the one stray item that somehow voided them... but those were just quick trips to pick up a few items. Having just bought a house, this time I was specifically looking for help in picking out shrubs for a privacy hedge and finding the perfect weed killer. Spoiler alert: I got zero help. Disclaimer: I went during their Green Expo last weekend knowing it would be busy, but I wanted to attend the expos and figured they'd have the foresight to have some extra staff handy. Clearly I assumed incorrectly. (ps. I went for the tail end to miss the bulk of the crowd so it wasn't actually that busy) Attempt 1 - the nursery isn't fully open yet so they only had 2 staff out there. One was swooning over hellebores with a woman who clearly wasn't planning on buying anything. Fine. The other was discussing various holly types with a couple who seemed genuinely interested. 20 minutes later, both are still occupied with the same customers, I've read literally all of the tags on the trees/shrubs they had out, a mob was forming, and I had the time to google what I liked - it's cheaper to order the 4' shrubs online somehow. And I don't have to lug them to my car. Awesome. On to weed killer. Attempt 2 - There's no one to be seen near the help desk. I check the adjacent rooms on each side, also no one. A staff member appears, guiding someone to chicken feed, but literally doesn't break pace and disappears immediately. Another one walks through, but when I ask her, she doesn't know and suggests I wait for Jason (I think? it's been a couple days and frankly I don't care). Jason appears helping someone else. I wait at the desk, and he had at least looked at me. Someone else comes up to the desk. Jason helps her instead. Whatever. Surely I'm next. Someone else asks him something while he's still helping the other person... and he disappears with them. A few minutes later, he reappears and offers to help me. Just kidding. He literally looks at me, then walks up to a guy who's staring at a random shelf and asks if he needs any help instead. At this point I've been waiting at the desk for 30 minutes, so I head over to customer service instead. Attempt 3 - I told the guy at the customer service desk that I'd been waiting for 30 minutes and asked if he could radio for someone else or help me himself. He said no, and that Jason was busy and there was nothing he could do about it. With that, I left my cart full of $$$ I planned to spend and walked out the door. And of course I was that idiot who looked back wanting to see someone notice the dramatic gesture but nope, no one did.

Yelp
I really like shopping at Homestead but this review is about their working conditions. Years ago the store had air conditioning in it and it was remodeled and the A/C is now gone. There are fans, but they don't help. I went there this past Friday and the temperature in the store was oppressive. It was hotter than outside. I walked around and was sweating buckets and after ten minutes I quickly made my purchase, felt like I would pass out in line, paid and left. This review is not about me and my discomfort for I was able to leave. This review is about the awful working conditions for the employees. The people looked drained, red faced, soaking wet with sweat. I am surprised none had passed out. I think about this every time I go there in the summer. It's unhealthy working conditions and shouldn't be allowed. Fix it owners.

Yelp
This place is amazing. I have never been to a store quite like this before. I thought it was going to be a gardening and outdoor type of place with the name, but they have way more than that! I was super impressed and had a blast walking around this place. I came for patio furniture, they had a ton of different things on display and it was really great to see things in person and all of the options that are available. The customer service was great and they helped us with looking up different finished and options in the catalog as well, it was great. But not only did they have just what we were looking for, but like I said, they had TONS more. I would say about half of the store is gardening items... house plants, outdoor plants, pots, and supplies to go with, but they also have clothes and jewelry! Very cute stuff too! And paintings and home decor. And even a kids toy secion... and a dog toy and supply section as well. Everything is sectioned off into rooms, and the store can be a little bit of a maze, but I enjoyed discovering what each room had to offer. By the registers we noticed people gasping and looking into these stationary bins... they were looking at chicks! They had 6 different types of baby chicks and they were all adorable, they had everything you needed to start a chicken coop, it was adorable. Lastly, we walked out to the parking lot only to notice that there was a petting zoo off to the side of the building. They had goats, pigs and llamas, and it was set up in a way that you could rent the area for parties, because they also had a small tent/pavillion with tables and a bubble bounce thing. It would be a great spot for a kids birthday party! Overall, I left this place with a huge smile on my face, it exceeded my expectations and it was SO much fun to walk through, the animals at the end was such a treat, I loved it and I cannot wait to go back.

Yelp
I called and emailed to get information on landscaping my front garden. They charge $250 just to look at the garden. And won't come out for jobs under $2500. I was still considering hiring them but no one ever got back to me. Such poor customer relations and such high prices! So I hired a lawn maintenance man who cleaned up the garden planted the flowers I'd bought and mulched a huge section all for $750. Guess I was lucky no one at Homestead returned my calls. I won't go back not even to buy a petunia.

Yelp
It's pricey, but gorgeous. You're going to pay anywhere from 10% to 50% more for the "Homestead experience," but the plants and goods are always in good condition and no matter the season, walking through the greenhouse is a treat.

Yelp
The fall fest is a nightmare. What used to be free now requires a $5 wrist band in order for you to enter or $17.50 for a child that wants to go on any of the attractions. The $5 isn't so bad, but the 45 minute wait at the ticket booth even if you were paying cash is ridiculous. Once we got in we walked to the lower field to buy food at the Grill Express. There are three things on the menu, they were out of all three. The entire line of about thirty people was turned away as the woman working there used a two channel radio to call for more food "um, we could use some more BBQ chicken and pork, when you get a chance. And we only have two hot dogs left". Yah think?! Maybe you could have called twenty minutes ago... We spent the entire time waiting in lines. Beer? Line. Food? Line and no food. Hay ride? Forget about it!! The hay ride (which has benches and not hay bails by the way) wait was over an hour. We were there from 1:30 to 4:30 and 2 and a half of the 3 hours was spent in line. Do not come here for the fall fest.

Yelp
Ordered online with curbside pickup. Not impressed with the quality of plants at all. Looked like I got leftovers from last season. Will never do again.

Yelp
Flowers and trees and chicks, oh my! Just about anything you could ever need for your garden and landscaping, including decor, patio furniture, beekeeping gear, and mushroom cultivating supplies. As mentioned in the first sentence, they have also expanded to chickens with a variety of chicks, feed, and chicken housing units, because... why not! They frequently have events here and the winter holiday light display is worth checking out. I didn't give the full five stars because the selection has moved in so many directions (do I need to mention the chickens again?) that it doesn't have the time, space, or expertise to really focus on what made it THE gardener destination in the first place - the plants!

Yelp
Great place for plants, garden tools, and decor. Plants are healthy and they have a large variety. Visited at Christmas also and they had wonderful holiday season items. Worth the drive if you don't live nearby. They have a store in Glen Bernie or near there also.

Yelp
This place has the best selection around but outrageous prices. I bought 4 flats of pansys yesterday and it cost more than $300 !! I will never buy plants here again.
