Joe Beef Opening Figure John Bil Dies Aged 49 | Eater Montreal

"A Toronto seafood spot where owner John Bildied—described as a seafood savant—recently died at 49; after years bouncing around he became fundamentally a Toronto restaurateur and worked closely on several notable projects, including the opening of Joe Beef in 2005, being recruited by Martin Picard to manage the Cabane à Sucre Au Pied de Cochon (a sugar shack about 45 minutes from Montreal), and helping open NYC’s M. Wells Steakhouse with Hugues Dufour; he was diagnosed with cancer in 2013 and died peacefully at home." - Tim Forster

Google
This place is amazing! Their bulk bins have everything you can think of and lots I've never heard of. Their cheese section and produce are also very impressive. I was amazed at all of the Gluten Free grab and go items. Quiche, sandwiches, desserts.

Google
Honest Weight Food Co-op is a true gem. The bulk section is impressively large—one of the biggest I’ve seen—and filled with high-quality options. I brought my fiancée, who once lived in the area and worked here as a member-employee, and she said it felt like coming home. After years away, walking through those aisles brought back so many good memories. It’s more than just a store—it’s a welcoming community space with heart.

Google
Amazing vegan options- I always find everything I need here (and I’m always tempted to try new things too). Their bakery and grab and go sections are stocked with gluten free and vegan options. Not to mention their outdoor gardens are so pretty this time of year

The co-op is a wonderful place, but not a perfect place for everyone. They will admit that their prices are somewhat higher because the experience is better. There are some things that co-op does that they do better or only they do, there are some things that they are not as good at. The produce is generally wonderful although a bit more expensive. Much of it is organic and much of it is local. The bulk section is like no other. I’ve heard it said that it is the largest section like this in the northeast and I would not have trouble believing it. The assortment of nuts, trail mix, dried fruit, spices, maple syrup, etc., etc. that you can buy or as much or as little as you want is huge. It is hard to find a cheese section in the capitalist district with as much variety, or with the kind of service that will cut as much as as little as you want and they are extremely knowledgeable about cheese. The bakery is one of the few fully vegan bakeries in the capital District. They prepare wonderful meals and have a hot and cold salad and prepared food bar with a couple of different soups every day. there is just so much here that you won’t find in the price choppers and Hannaford‘s of the world. And, you do pay a bit more for it. The sale items tend to be really good on gourmet products. There is also a wonderful vibe with customers who will routinely say hello, let you go in front of them with your cart and the staff in general seems happy to be here. If you join for $100 you get a discount and if you work you get an increasing discount. Oh, and I didn’t mention all of the plantsin the nice weather. I can go on, but the co-op is more than just a grocery store it’s an experience. People mention “hippies”, a “cult” and similar terms. No value judgement but a large part of the mission of the coop is to embrace inclusiveness of all….to embrace diversity and to promote social causes. The mission is also strongly supportive of respect and restoration of the environment, and this may attract shoppers and workers who are a subset of the population at large.

Google
I don't grocery shop here. I buy prepared foods. The lasagna is delicious. Carrot cake is quite good as well. I do wish they always had a meat item on the hot bar and the salad bar tends to be a bit underwhelming. Place is always clean and staff is very helpful

Google
I wish more health food stores like this still existed. From the smell to all the positive vibes, this place feels so familiar. All the prepared food is delicious. The bulk bins are filled with all the necessities. So many new and local items to try. I wish this was closer to home. They do have a ridiculous amount of chocolate if that is your thing.

Google
I am so amazed by this store the people were so generous and nice there were a lot of healthy food that I didn’t even know existed and I’m happy that I found this store. I’m about to invest in it because it’s worth it. “ Health is wealth “. "Ital is vital" thank you to the most high 🙏🏾

Google
The honest weight food is a very wonderful place to shop for a healthy options, but some of the staff are very racist, the nasty looks and ignoring a person when asking a question is just rude. Some of the staff need to retrain on how to deal with people of different ethnicities. This would definitely make this a better place to shop for food. But this posting will probably go on deaf ears, because we live in a society where most people don't care unless its dirt affecting them or their family.

Yelp
A friend who misses The Bread Butler, maybe even more than I, told me that there was an excellent sourdough bread being baked by Anicca Bakery in Troy and sold at the Honest Weight Co-op. I was at the Co-op the next day. A variety of their breads are located in a shelf display across the aisle from all the other breads. I saw sandwich rolls, French baguettes, plain sourdough, three seeds sourdough, whole wheat sourdough, plain challah, everything topped challah, and a couple of variations that I don't recall. Some of the loaves are also available in half-loaf sizes. I purchased a loaf of 3 Seed Sourdough ($8.69) and a loaf of Everything topped Challah ($7.29). Both are excellent in their own right. The 3 seeds on the sourdough are organic dry roasted pumpkin, organic dry roasted sunflower, and organic golden flax seeds. Anicca makes a point of stating that they make every attempt to obtain all their ingredients within 200 miles of the Troy bakery. The sourdough has a nice chewy crust and a decent sour flavor. The challah has a softer crust than the sourdough, just a bit of sweetness and a slightly lighter colored crumb. The challah is also double bagged for some reason. The loaf is placed in a plastic bag before it is placed in the outer paper bag. Maybe that was to protect the everything topping? If you visit their web page https://aniccabakery.com/ you will learn that you can order online and pickup your order at Alias Coffee Shop in Troy. You may also notice that their web page does not mention all the varieties of bread that I saw at the Co-op and shows a more limited production schedule. Maybe their web page is just not up to date. Another issue I ran into was knowing whether the bread was fresh. Glancing at the information on the label of my two choices, I saw that the sourdough was labeled as "Date Baked on10/29/25" (GREAT! That was today), while the challah was labeled as "Date Baked 10/30/25." WAIT!!! How can that be? 10/30/25 is not until TOMORROW!!! I checked several other packages and found that all the packages of challah were labeled with tomorrow's date. As an aside, does that mean I wouldn't be able to eat the challah until tomorrow? LOL Or better yet, if I eat it today does that mean the carbs don't exist yet? Still, LOL. In any event, a Co-op employee noticed my confusion and insisted on informing management while wondering if this meant the sourdough could have actually been sitting on the shelf since 10/28/25. Today or not, but probably tomorrow also, both breads were excellent. I'm looking forward to trying a whole wheat sourdough.

Yelp
I've only been here once but had a wonderful experience! I came to pickup a catering order for a friend, as well as a few specific items, and was so impressed with everything. The store was organized, carried a large variety of items, and amazing bulk section. Every associate I interacted with was also friendly and helpful. When I asked one where to find a specific cheese, she stopped what she was doing and walked me over to the case. If I lived nearby, I'd shop here all the time. Until then, I'll continue to stop in as I come back to visit the area.

Yelp
Still such a great spot for bulk items. I primarily come here to refill spices and other bulk baking items. I just refilled my Dutch processed coca, maple syrup, and lots of spices. *Bring your own containers and have them weighed and tarred at the customer service desk before shopping. The spice selection is so great and you can get any quantity to just try new ones out. It really saves me a lot of money to get spices here.

Yelp
I buy ready made meals from Honest Weight Food Co-op. I especially like the tuna salad even though I can make it myself. The other day, I noticed there were a lot of people seated in the dining area eating prepared foods. I was starting to feel hungry so I decided to join them. I know that some people frown on buffets since the pandemic but the buffet at Honest Weight appears to be well maintained. I picked Tofu Steak with Cabbage and Lemon which was quite good. While it may not have looked appetizing, I found the Root Vegetable Cake with Horseradish Cream to be amazing. The Couscous with Tomato sauce was good, too. They do awesome things with spices, especially turmeric. It's clean and friendly at Honest Weight. In the dining area there's plenty of seating. I also like the signs on the walls explaining what's recyclable and what's not. It takes out the guess work and is environmentally conscious.

Yelp
I'm not a member and I don't aspire to be, so to me, the Co-op is much too expensive and limited to be a regular stop for groceries, but what it is good for is some specialty items and one thing in their bulk spice section in particular -- Hungarian paprika. "Paprika" is a Hungarian word and the Hungarians make it best, and if you don't think that there's a difference than you've never had something made with the real stuff. I love knowing that anytime I'm making my grandmother's recipes I can get real Hungarian paprika locally from the Co-op, and in bulk! The cheese counter is also very good and the cheesemongers there are knowledgeable and helpful. Their plant-based section is good for a variety of things, some even made locally, that you can't find in regular grocery stores. So while I, nor my bank account, could sustain on the Co-op alone, it is great for those specialty visits.

Yelp
Awesome selection of products and I was so happy I was able to find Alive mushroom elixir and Ithaca hummus here. Also, amazing selection of cheeses including many raw milk cheeses and goat cheese favorites like Humboldt Fog. Very clean and great service but the prices are super steep if you're not a member and maybe even if you are. Most of the things I bought here today we a major markup from my local Wegman's and Trader Joe's back in New England, but I was here visiting family and this place came highly recommended for quality foods.

Yelp
Hands down the best juice in town. For whenever they are open. Had a sweet sunset ? The other day. Got my punch in. Am all set. Whenever staffed, my go to place.

Yelp
I was visiting some of my college friends in Albany for the afternoon when we decided to grab some lunch as the centerpiece of the day. I went to college in Albany, but graduated 10 years ago and am reallllly out of the loop with new businesses that have popped up in the area and established ones I didn't visit while up there. Honest Weight is in the latter, and after one of my friends suggested we grab some food here I got excited to try out a spot that was new to me. I can't speak on the selection of groceries or the setup of the store itself, since my experience does not extend farther than utilizing their takeout menu. My friend suggested browsing their boxed lunches - they have a number of sandwich and wrap selections that come with sides and a dessert. Their turkey pesto wrap looked good, so I went with that (I'm a sucker for pesto mmmm). I was impressed with the wrap - it had a good amount of turkey, as well as spinach, tomatoes and cheddar cheese all brought together with a pesto mayo. They wrapped it well, so it didn't fall apart despite multiple bites. The box also came with chick pea salad, an apple, and a cookie. Overall, I was impressed with my wrap from Honest Weight - it was really fresh and the sides really bought it together for a solid lunch. The concept and offerings of Honest Weight intrigue me, so if circumstances found me in the area again I wouldn't be against returning.

Yelp
Fantastic grocery store where everyone that works there owns a part of the business. So friendly and service oriented. It's a fantastic place to shop for your groceries!

Yelp
Honest weight is a fantastic coop and I'm so grateful to have them in the community. Not only do they have a great grocery selection, they also give back to the community in many ways. Their bulk section is superb and has saved me so much money and packaging waste over the years. They have cute home goods and a decent plant selection as well. Everyone I've brought with me to HW has loved the place. Definitely worth a visit!

Yelp
Had one of the best meatloaf sandwiches ever at this place. Don't go here very often the parking lot usually pretty full and they do a good business but occasionally I will swing by and grab some thing.

Yelp
A real food coop exists in Albany NY. Everything about this place is top notch and being a member had many benefits. The prices can be a little high but the quality is too. The prepared foods; tasty. The produce etc. are top quality and the selection throughout is diverse and interesting. Go there.

Yelp
I mean no offense but if Honest Weight Food Co-op was a person, it would be an intelligent, well-to-do tree hugger. Kombucha, anyone? Yes, there are several varieties and they even offer some on tap. Kombucha. On tap. One can find that kombucha in the bulk section of the grocery store, arguably the showpiece of the coop. A recent Times Union article wrote that the bulk section of Honest Weight is the largest one on the East Coast! It does have a lot to offer; a wide variety of whole bean coffees, different tofus, a ton of spices, nuts, grains, flours, etc. I even bought some ghost pepper salt, just to try, because it was there. One of my favorite departments is the cheese section. This section is comparable to the Cheese Traveler in variety and scope. The people who work there are also very knowledgeable and are willing to cut your cheese (hehe) into the size you want for purchase. Honest Weight curates their selections. Two items I've found there that are usually found only at local farmer's markets: Buddhapesto and Willow Pond Farm's sheeps milk yogurt. If you haven't tried either, put them on your shopping list. Thank me later. I've also been to a few classes at Honest Weight: a coffee tasting, a cheese pairing demo, and an intro to Korean cooking course provided by the chef/owners of Son of Egg. All were enjoyable. At one time, I was also participating on their Art committee. Did you know there is a rotating display of art in the hallway next to the teach-in kitchen? This place is a jewel but it somehow flies under the radar. I wish I lived closer or had more disposable income to spend on everyday extravagances. I'd be there every week.

Yelp
We are very lucky to have the Honest Weight Food CO-OP in the Capital District. I have brought friends and family from out-of-town to shop at the CO-OP and they are always impressed with the quality and range of goods. In addition, the staff is always friendly and helpful. My only issue is the jungle-like overgrowth to the right and left of the main entrance -- weeds as high as 3 feet. The areas are unsightly and should to be cleared. PLEASE CO-OP do something about this unsightly mess.
google avatar

Raya V.

Yelp
I believe they have fallen off a little on the quality of the food. My go to used to be a vegan breakfast sandwich from the breakfast bar. They still make them to order and they are still delicious. However, the breakfast burritos are three times smaller and twice as expensive as they used to be (I get inflation, but...?) and they didn't taste too great the past few times I've tried them. It is mostly hard wrap, with no filling and the filling it does have lacks in flavor. I will stick to the breakfast sandwich. The coffee selection is great for the price especially.

Yelp
Honest Weight is your friendly, healthy Co-Op. They give discounts if you are a member. They sell decent varieties of vegetables, meats, breads, fruits, dairy. Most of the veggies and fruits are more expensive than at brand name stores and super markets, although I like supporting smaller shoppes like this one. They also sell flowers, grains, feed, nuts, cheeses, freezer items and lots of healthy scrubs, soaps, cards, coffee, nutrition, energy, dried fruits, oils and flours. It is a perfect place if you are looking for health foods. Staff is super friendly. Prices are a guessing game: items are not marked, stickers fall off items, you are supposed to keep track of what 4-digit number your buys are. Review: 4

D R.

Yelp
Kombucha on tap. Usually several flavors of Aqua ViTea and two of YesFolk. They sell growlers, or bring your own. If you bring your own, get a tare weight of your growler at the front desk because they sell by the pound. Love the fresh kombucha!!

Yelp
If you know food coops, Honest Weight Food Co-op delivers what you expect and more! Support your local co-op! The main attraction here for me is the bulk section. I heard someone say it was the best bulk section in the Northeast. I don't know about that, but it is certainly one of the best I have ever seen. You can find very rare items, and often at very good prices. Just remember to bring your own container and get it weighed at the service desk when you come in! (Otherwise, you'll pay a small charge for the plastic containers they provide.) You'll find the usual staples like grains, flours, pastas, nuts, etc. You'll also find various honeys, syrups, fresh yeasts, spices, teas, unique salts, etc. If you can't find what you're looking for, chances are the bulk manager might be able to order it for you. If you're trying to live packaging-free, also check out the health and beauty section for its bulk soaps (even cut-you-own bar soaps). Eggs are a great purchase here. If you want local, pasture raised eggs, they can be found here for under $5, which is a bargain! Bulk and fresh tofu and some other select items are quite affordable here as well. A lot of other things are quite a lot more expensive here, if you aren't getting the discount. Becoming a member is a bit of a chore, as you have to sit through a long training. That only gets you a very small discount. You need to volunteer time to get the 24% discount. I personally am not much of a fan of most pre-made co-op foods and deli foods. (They taste similar across the nation.) I go for the hummus wrap sometimes. Some of the foods are quite salty. This is largely down to taste, since I know some people swear by the prepped food. The plant and gardening section is good, but I wish there was more of an emphasis on native plants and fewer invasive plants. Service is pretty good for a co-op. I see some reviewers hate the service here. This is down to expectation setting: most these people are volunteering and may only work irregularly. They almost certainly aren't going to be ruthlessly efficient. They'll probably be a little distracted, maybe a bit frazzled, and they definitely won't know the code for that obscure produce you forgot to label. If you can get over that, this place is phenomenal as far as co-ops are concerned!

Yelp
The good things- the food, MOST of staff, the catering. Now, if you've ever seen Seinfeld and remember the episode of the soup, Nazi....... There is a staff member who works full-time here that is pretty much the equivalent of that, she is so terrible that people leave her checkout line trembling.lol I have to say I usually avoid her at all costs, but unfortunately due to long lines and hers being the only one shorter, go figure, I gave it a chance today. Learned my lesson! Quite possibly the rudest woman I've ever come into contact with. I don't want to name names but steer clear of the tall woman with the short hair and hat if you can. I understand people have their own problems, but to treat people in such a way it's just plain wrong.
google avatar

Debbe X.

Yelp
Too many items with toxic pesticides. They need to stock more organic food. Why shop at a health food store if you can't find organic items? I guess they are not a health food store.

Yelp
We are from Out of town but I was taken by some locals and it was great. Everyone was super nice and the quality of the food was brilliant. I would come back to both get snacks and groceries.

Yelp
This is not a review of the coop itself or the food and other items sold here. I've had no problem with the products. My issue is with a few childish, petty people who work here and a WTF situation. I've shopped here since the coop was at its old location. For years I had no issue. Last year, some bizarre problem arose. It started with a man who works here part-time. Whenever I encountered this person while shopping, he would act with baffling and almost stalker-like hatred toward me. I do not know him except by name from another member who is his close friend. Eventually, his friend informed me he apparently spread some slander around about me. In the meantime, I experienced rude "punishing" behavior from a few other employees here. I do not know any of these people. I'm a peaceful customer. I have never had a problem with anyone at this store. So, some of the good people at the "Honest" Weight Coop apparently enjoy spreading lies and rumors about their customers. I tried to go back there yesterday. Two employees were again rude, staring at me with hate, talking to me in a sarcastic and rude manner. Why would they show hate and disrespect for someone who regularly shops at their store? To tell the truth, I don't even know. Whatever they are "punishing" me about exists exclusively in their imaginations. I have not had a conflict with anyone here. The most I have ever said to anyone is "how are you," "thank you," and "have a good evening." You know what, though -- I think there are a couple people associated with this place who are less than honorable people. I have a friend with a farm who sells some of her products here, otherwise I would go elsewhere. I like her products. In fact, I'm a CSA member and actually LIKE to support local businesses and farmers. I'm sure after this review I will be treated to more bizarre behavior by these adults.

F M.

Yelp
Huge selection. Like another reviewer said, the bulk bins are spectacular. They are a throwback to old markets where you would buy your beans and grains and other dry goods out of big containers. Something I used to see occasionally as a child. I bought navy beans here, which I actually had a hard time finding in my local supermarkets. They have a bunch of nifty sections if you want to make your own... Well pretty much anything. There's yeast and kombucha and all kinds of raw and fermented stuff. Huge selection in a small store Now the bad part: if you were looking to spend $200 on groceries that you can carry out in one hand, this is certainly your place, you will have no problem doing that, and a huge selection to choose from. It seems like most of the food quality is a cut above, especially for cheeses and specialty items. However, I can't imagine people shopping here for their daily needs We had a lovely cashier named Val, I am sure we could be good friends! She asked me if we were members of the co-op, and when I asked her what was involved with that, it was a $100 yearly fee and a three hour orientation to become a member. I really admire the people who are committed to such things, but it's just a bit much for me. Happy to go there sometimes to get some specialty items though. One more thing: quite nice and interesting plant selection. Surprising in a little market, but they had all sorts of little cactus and succulents and other plans, really nice little stuff.

Vera S.

Yelp
I'm a member of Honest Weight I went there today with a friend and was very disappointed, I use to be able to get a sandwich made to order not anymore there made ahead of time in a case which I do not prefer I do not know how fresh they are, and they have changed the way you get deserts I only wanted one cupcake not a box of 6, there prices are high I did not save much money today, I'm very unhappy with Honest Weight, I probably won't go back, I travel all the way from Schenectady to go there.
google avatar

Jem B.

Yelp
I do love this place but some stuff you can get organic lower cost at Trader Joe's! Yes I love Trader Joe's but it's much further away and they don't have a buffet, juice, latte served daily. Also, they have more organic made salads here. Discounts for Students 8% Sunday and Seniors Wednesday. Just saw it use to be 10% boooooo! Also, they need more signs for Sanitary Rules at Buffet Bar, DO NOT touch the Serving spoon with your hand or your nose to smell it --yea some customers have no awareness of hygiene! Gross! Anyways, still going be here every week but careful about the buffets.

Yelp
I love the food, I love the people working and shopping, and it makes me a happier and kinder person just being there. The prepared food is delicious *and* healthy, the produce selection is wide and deep and interesting and seasonal and local. The wellness department is amazing from natural vitamins to supplements and body care and the most helpful and knowledgeable staff. The meat and fish is amazing. Oh and the fruit is terrific, including seasonal organic grapes, local apples, local strawberries in season, local this, local that, kumquats (yes) and all sorts of staples and oddities from farms local and beyond. Even the gourmet section with cheeses (I lovingly refer to as the "high price section") is terrific. And I almost forgot the backbone of the store -- the bulk section, OMG! Nuts, grains, beans, flour of every variety imaginable -- local, stone-ground, wheat and non-wheat (Wild Hive *and* Farmer Ground!) -- dried fruit, spices and herbs, oils, maple syrup, non-wheat flours, you name it. I love being there, shopping and taking home and cooking and eating what I bought. Honest Weight is a treasure, a jewel and is in my mind just about the very best feature of Albany. If you are driving through, Honest Weight is a quick 2-minute exit/re-entry off Route 90, and is worth a stop for a food recharge or packaged food to go. Or some coffee or wheatgrass or other pressed juice drink. Everyone is welcome to shop there. Once you do for a while, you will want to become a member to be closer to the whole gestalt of the place, yes you will. The prices on packaged goods may not be as cheap as supermarkets, but Honest Weight does not sell its shelf space to Coca Cola or the like. Any product you pick up has been thoroughly reviewed and given the HWFC seal of approval for containing only natural ingredients. Honest Weight's amazingly wonderful staff go further and ensure that virtually everything you purchase is also delicious. Or your money back, no kidding. And there are regular specials on items that are a real deal. Go there and then tell me you don't feel the love, unless you are a cold blooded salamander. And they will love you regardless. It's all good at Honest Weight.

Yelp
I love it except that the prices have gone up and up and up doesn't seem like the Coop of the old days. On the other hand, the selection has expanded so much and the Cafe is fantastic.
google avatar

Yelp
I went for the pumpkin pie latte and it didn't disappoint. It's tasty. The employees, for the most part, are welcoming and helpful with the odd anomaly here and there. LOVE the vegan desserts and overall selection of prepared food. Produce selection is large and a tad overpriced but you can find a good deal every once in a while. I like coming here because I get to support local and it's convenient with ample parking.

Yelp
Came here on a whim to grab a sandwich from their deli. Wish we had one of these near me. The market is fully stocked with local goods and then other larger organic brands where they need to fill gaps. They have quite the impressive variety of locally sourced and national brands actually. I went to the deli filled out their sandwich form and had my sandwich in less than 10 minutes. Grabbed a kombucha and went to checkout. It was really pleasant experience.

Brook R.

Yelp
I The food is great. But lately the service has been off. Hardly anyone smiles there anymore. It doesn't feel good. Maybe it should be a mandatory part of the job. I prefer honest weight over other stores. But end up at Whole Foods
google avatar

Brandon H.

Yelp
Great selection of foods, but very racist undertones from the staff. Super uncomfortable to shop here. The store is smack in the middle of a marginalized community, but when you enter the store there is nothing if the sort. Was super disappointed at this place seemed to have great potential.

S G.

Yelp
I finally found a source for dried chili peppers! The Ancho chiles that I bought at Honest Weight were still supple and full of flavor and spice rather than the dried out rocks I'm used to getting at the grocery store. Also these chiles are usually difficult to find along with the de arbor chiles. Thanks!

Brad L.

Yelp
DO NOT SHOP HERE!!! The food selection is horrible, almost every employee has the worst attitude or will ignore you, and everything is insanely overpriced. I wouldn't shop here again if I was starving to death.
google avatar

Ian M.

Yelp
Would it hurt to crack a smile at customer service? Apparently it does. I guess shopping here and asking simple questions is too much for this establishment. Elitism at a locally owned food market is apparently a good business strategy. Well this was my last time giving business to it. Wish I could've given no stars.

Yelp
If I lived closer, I would go there more. During the pandemic, when the world decided to make bread at home, they were the only place that had yeast and flour, and I rediscovered them. Their bulk items are terrific and wide-ranging, their vegetarian offerings are broad, they have an amazing cheese department, and they're the only place in the Capital Region where you can buy fresh duck breast. Plus they have some fabulous higher end treats that I've never seen in regular grocery stores here. And you can bring your own (clean) containers for the bulk items; just bring them to the front to be weighed and labeled first.

Yelp
I've heard many good things about Honest Weight since moving to Albany so I finally made the pilgrimage with a lot of anticipation. Overall, I was favorably impressed but underwhelmed. Arriving I was impressed to have a guard who controlled those entering so that the number inside would allow safety and social distancing. Alas, once inside, I found many of the shoppers self absorbed and unconcerned with other shoppers' personal space in light of the pandemic. The produce area has variety but isn't as extensive as I imagined, and overall it's quite pricey. I'd choose it over the produce section at Whole Foods, but I wasn't much more wowed. The cheeses were pleasant but again a limited selection, and overall pretty expensive. The meats and seafood section was fine (the server at the meat counter was borderline hostile) but again, not particularly extensive. Again, some great condiments and other fun things (e.g. clotted cream for scones and muffins) but a limited selection overall. The price for some things was outrageous (e.g. fish sauce at $11 a bottle; we proceeded to a Chinese grocery where their top quality brand was $3.50) I was disappointed with the coffee and tea selection (limited) and the breads and pastries left me flat. If I lived nearby in Albany I'd possibly shop here frequently. As I live in Delmar, it's a hike and I can't say that I am especially motivated to return. I like the righteous vibe (though, it considerably lacks that of a place like Ludgate Farm in Ithaca) but quite honestly, if I have to make the trek and I am up for spending more, I prefer Whole Foods (yes, I know that vampire like Amazon and evil Jeff Bezos own WF.) My impression was that Honest Weight hasn't decided whether it wants to be a gourmet specialty supermarket or a groovy natural foods store. It sort of disappoints on both counts.

Yelp
This store has a lot to offer -- fantastic selection and great products at reasonable prices! I'm giving a two-star review because they are currently putting their employees in danger. The workers at this store are their greatest assets, and they deserve better conditions. Co-ops like Honest Weight are supposed to be the ethical alternative to stores like Walmart. But even Walmart is taking greater care of their workers! With things like: - One way aisles - Limiting the number of customers in the store at one time - Scheduling stocking of the store so that there are fewer bodies (both customers and workers) in the aisle at the same time, making it impossible to maintain safe distance between people. Once practices like this are put in place I will gladly change my review to Five Stars!

Yelp
When I go grocery shopping I expect to hear what aisle the sales are in, I don't expect to be followed around by a pushy woman grazing the front end of the store with a guitar trying to get me to go to her occult practicing tarot card class. That is not respectful. I don't go around demanding them to read my Bible when they grocery shop. And I certainly don't expect repeated loud speaker announcements as to find where her tarot class in the store. It's unprofessional & unacceptable for a so called all inclusive environment. Very disappointed. They do not truly respect all walks of lives in an environment that has so many there. So we are expected to as Christians to always just sit back and be tolerant but they aren't apparently. And If they dont they should be "honest" (haha no pun intended) & clear so people can make a "choice" as to if it's an environment for them. We weren't given a choice. We spent boatloads of money there and never again! To all of our many many Christian friends that we promoted this store to, we are sorry. We didn't know that they offer occult practices as a part of your grocery shopping experience and that they have no consideration for others

Yelp
This is a hidden gem for anyone who is looking for truly healthy foods!!! We had an appointment nearby and wanted to grab lunch- we arrived at the height of lunch time so the buffet was pretty sparse so we headed to the sandwich counter. My daughter was thrilled to get a portobello mushroom sandwich and I enjoyed a wonderful turkey and cheese with spring mix lettuce, cucumbers and pesto!! So good!!!! However the gluten free bread fell apart in my hands as I ate - however the flavors more then made up for the bread!! We paid for our lunch and sat in their cafe area- again a nice break from the hustle and bustle of the store

Yelp
If you're still looking for the best bulk supply grocery store in the Capital Region, Honest Weight should be your top contender. Honest Weight is the area's largest food co-op, stocking whole/ minimally process foods. You'll easily find your non-GMOs, Organics, Fair-trade, Raw, Paleo, Vegetarian, Vegan, Gluten-Free here, all under the guise of a normal high-end grocery store. The real gem of Honest Weight is the bulk section. Here you can get as much or as little as you want of a huge variety of nuts, grains, flours, spices, etc. This is where I get my flours from, as well as any specialty spices. Some specialty items I love to get here: - Tofu: They have the best tasting firm tofu in the area. 5lb block for $10. - Cheese: An amazing cheese department will have you building a cheese board in your head. Excellent prices to boot. - Whole-chickens: Sale prices on their local non-gmo chickens is simply unbeatable compared to other grocery stores. Joining the co-op has some benefits of 2% off all items, an extra 5% off various Owners Deals items, as well as 8%/24% off if you put in 3 hours of work a month/week. Students and Seniors can get 8% off on Sundays. Honestly, I've only scratched the surface here of what Honest Weight has to offer. Its best you come here to discover for yourself.

Yelp
My last review for Honest Weight was over seven years ago. And a lot has changed. It's no secret that I wasn't the biggest fan of their new building project. Now that they've been in the new space for a while, I think it's safe to say that while something has been lost, other things have been gained. And the gains outweigh the losses. Yes, I think the place is still too expensive for what it is. A savvy shopper can find a handful of identical items at half price from other retailers in the region. So let the buyer beware. Member-workers continue to be a good idea in theory, but in practice they don't seem as efficient--or frankly as competent--as someone who tackles the same job full time. Although kibitzing in the aisles with your member-worker friends may be one of the reasons people shop here. However, meat finally gets a non-apologetic treatment. And that's a huge step in the right direction. While all of their other departments have expanded as well, perhaps the single greatest thing about the market, and the reason I keep on coming back, is their amazing bulk foods section. It's awesome. If you ever feel like you are in a culinary rut, and want to try something new, you should come to the bulk food section and explore the bins for inspiration. I'm not kidding. There are so many grains, and spices, and dried things. So many varieties of salts and flours and sugars. While they may not have every bean, legume or pulse known to man, they have more than enough to keep you busy researching recipes for a very very long time. And as opposed to traditional ethnic markets, you can buy all of these things a teaspoon at a time if so desired. Or if you find something you love, organic steel cut oats, you can get them in three pound sacks. Plus they now have classrooms (which I have yet to see) and Honest Weight continues to be an important part of our community (even if now they have lenders outside the Capital Region). All in all, it's a step in the right direction. Although I'll always miss the rough-around-the-edges charm of their last location.

Yelp
I live in Saratoga so my visits to Honest Weight have been strategic and infrequent, usually for baking ingredients. I'm in and out in 10 minutes. But today I had a $5 off $40 coupon (acquired at last week's Craft New York Brewers Festival) that required me to go deeper, and I was very happy with the results. After stocking up on grains and nuts, I browsed the cheese department where the friendly cheesemonger invited me to sample a hops-infused farstead cheese from Harpersfield. It was fabulous. As soon as that was in my basket he offered me a fresh Pecorino Dolce di Sicilia which was just as good. Next to the fish counter where I saw some of the biggest dry scallops I have ever encountered. Hearing I was planning to eat one right away as sashimi, the fishmonger went in the back to get an even fresher one that hadn't been sitting in the case. They also gave me ice for the rest of my fish purchases. By now it was lunchtime, and the ordering counter was filled with folks ordering steam table selections or sandwiches made to order. Everything looked very tempting but I had more stops to make. At the cashier, I discovered I had forgotten the $5 off coupon! But I was in such a good mood I didn't worry about it. Then, found the coupon in my car and brought it in and they were happy to apply it retroactively. All in all, shopping Honest Weight was like a loving embrace from your hippie mother who smells equally of patchouli oil and new computer. I am now a huge fan and plan to get back here much more often.

Yelp
This is a great co-op but as often is the case with co-ops, you do pay a premium. Their bulk food selection is amazing, their cheese selection is amazing. In general, their selection of items is amazing. Produce section is good but pricey. They have fresh seafood. They have a great prepared food, deli and pre-packaged take away food selection, that is made in house. They also have a really great selection of house made baked goods with a pretty broad vegan and GF selection too! Tip - in the prepared section their beet and black bean burger and sweet potato/bean burgers are really tasty. This time I also tried their spiced prepared chicken breast - a bit greasy and a fair amount of heat but good. I'm originally from this area and this is often a stop that I make when I come into town.

Yelp
What have we got here? I've never made the pilgrimage to its previous location but my colleagues have been raving about the co-op especially since its reincarnation... in its newest form on Watervliet Ave. The parking is ample in the lot and a there's also bike parking next to the entrance. Aisles and aisles of locally grown and locally sourced items including fresh produce, meats, cheeses, spices, tea leaves, coffee, all natural snacks, an olive bar, and a hot/cold item food bar occupies the space. Oh, there's also a good variety of beers and ciders. I couldn't resist but grabbed a few of everything in the co-op to bring home and try. As I was checking out, I noticed the bottom of the receipt stating 10% off purchase on Sundays with a valid student ID! Perfect for those who get their grocery shopping done on Sundays.

Yelp
During the Coronavirus pandemic there is excellent care taken by the Co-op to ensure that social distancing, masks and a limited number of customers are in place. The quality and variety of produce, cheeses, fish and meat is excellent. Health and cosmetic products, flowering plants for your garden are quality and competitively priced. If you need a last minute gift for a child's birthday party, you can find it there. A meal for one? At the Co-op. A healthy smoothie? At the Co-op. Unique Salad? Soup? At the Co-op! The volunteers are friendly and are familiar with what they sell.

Yelp
This is a beautiful, pristine coop with an active base membership and a demonstrated commitment to community accessibility + sustainable practices. You'll find a lot of the kinds of products you might get at Wh*le F**ds, except they are more affordable (especially if you plan ahead) and as a bonus you'll be putting money back into a community-owned operation rather than bankrolling Jeff B*z*s megalomaniacal space colonialism and labor abuse, yay! Specifics: the bulk sections have an outstanding selection and make it easy to shop on a budget. The baked goods section is one of the best in the area, especially if you are looking for gluten free or vegan options (the giant GF oreos, omg, do not miss). To become a member-owner, you attend an orientation, pay $100 (can do this in installments and if you move away you "sell back" your ownership so basically get reimbursed), and you'll get 2% off your future purchases. There are further discounts if you contribute to the coop by putting in work hours in one of the many parts of the store. High recommend!

Yelp
Honest Weight Co-op is doing great things. The first thing I love about the co-op is the bulk section. Need a teaspoon of a spice you don't have for a recipe? Want to try a kind of flour you haven't heard of, a new kind of tea, or even some granola? If you can think of it, Honest Weight has it in the bulk section (except for currants, I haven't been able to find those. Everything else, though). You can also bring your own containers if you don't want to use plastic, just stop at the service desk on the way in to have them weighed/inspected. My other favorite thing the co-op does is offer free classes every month, with topics covering pretty much anything you can think of. I gravitate toward cooking/food topics and have made sauerkraut, sourdough, and learned how to make kefir. These classes are open to absolutely anyone (with preregistration) and they usually post classes for the upcoming month during the last week of the previous month. So, you can find a LOT of value in the bulk section and in the free classes available...and this can help mitigate some of the pricier items you'll find in the store. I won't lie - the co-op is where I purchase some of our food, but I couldn't afford to purchase all of our food here. You'll find health food items and a plethora of locally produced things. While pricey, you'll find the selections come off as very lovingly and thoughtfully curated.
