Where to Drink Margaritas in Sacramento for MargaritaCon | Eater

"For late-night eats in Old Sacramento, head to Honey and the Trapcat, whose kitchen serves a menu full of bar classics until 2 a.m. seven days a week. Your choices include burgers topped with everything from guacamole to eggs, bacon, and hashbrowns; specialty fries with carne asada or chili and cheese; and craveable snacks like asparagus fries and tempura cauliflower, among others. The bartenders will make you any drink you like based on your favorite spirit, but Tommy’s Margarita — Astral Tequila Blanco, lime, agave, and fresh fruit — tastes especially good on a sunny day on the backyard patio." - Annalise Mantz

This spot is such an underrated gem! I'd been here half a dozen times and always had a great experience with the staff, good food, great drinks, nice vibes. Pool tables for a fun activity, tons of indoor and outdoor seating, and the patio is cozy and gorgeous in nice weather. Recently I hosted a party here and it was a totally smooth and easy experience. No contracts or rental fees - I was able to decorate and save space for about 40 on the patio. The back bar was opened for easy ordering, everyone could order independently rather than trying to split a check, and they even made me a signature cocktail with a cute lil sign! Of all my guests only a handful had ever been before and everyone had a fabulous time. Couldn't recommend any higher 🥰

My wife and I were in town for training for the week. We went in twice. The first night for drinks. We sat at the bar. The bartender, Michael was awesome. He made very good drinks, talked to us the entire time we were there and made sure we were taken care of. The place is big and very clean. The place is very cool and has an awesome vibe. We enjoyed the first night so we decided to go back again. Josh, was our bartender. He was awesome. It was a bit busy but he was able to take care of things and kept people happy. We decided to eat and ordered the spicy guacamole burger….. OMG it was delicious. Both my wife and I commented that it was one of, if not the best burgers we’ve ever had. The place is not a fine dining and bright lights, big city experience. It’s a cool vibe, great drinks, hometown bar experience. If you don’t mind that, you’ll love the place. If that’s not for you move on. Also, if you plan to have drinks and food. Remember good food and drinks take time to make. Be patient….. It’s worth the wait. Thanks for a great experience. Highly recommend.

Google
My sister told me about this place and I’ve been coming back at every few months. It’s just a chill good vibe here every time I come. Everyone is down to earth bartenders and servers will talk with you and make it a good night. Probably one of the best vibe bars in Sacramento. They play some good music and there’s enough room to dance. You can shoot pool and they have an outside patio area you can chill at

Google
This place is GREAT! Been here 3 times-first 2 just for drinks (cocktails and beer) and lunch on the 3rd visit. Had the spicy veggie burger, hubby had the chicken fingers. The burger was amazing, genuinely one of the best things I've had in a while. Bartender is awesome. All-in-all a kick ass place.

Google
I went to eat once but was so good Im going to go back often. Was met by a lady with a country accent and she was absolutely so nice. The drinks were a little more expensive than everywhere we were going but overall it was great and ill go again.

Google
Food was served nice and hot, the burger buns were burned to a perfection. The asadero fries were great. The service was spot on. The bartender was courteous and quick. The kitchen crew went out of their way to make us some fresh pico de gallo…….these folks really have a great vibe with the entire place. Plenty of TV and games to watch with music……..

Google
Loud and grungy inside, very pub like. So loud we had trouble ordering. One area is a bit quieter than the other. There are two bar areas, playing different music. Patio is nice but not all tables were shaded well. Food is good, drinks not as good. Staff nice.

Google
This pub has a great vibe. The service was friendly and the carne asada fries were the best I've ever had. Delicious!

Yelp
Came here with a late night burger craving.. was pleasantly surprised with it. This place looks a bit like a divey pub and I've found hit and miss food at places like that, but the burger here actually was solid. I got the bacon guac one. Lots of bacon and guac to add a ton of savory flavor and the beef was pretty meaty and cooked well. Only thing I thought could be improved was the bun. Fries were okay. Staff and other patrons were quite friendly. I brought my dog and was able to sit out on the patio with him.

Yelp
I finally tried this place out today after always hearing about them. The ambiance is like a nice underground bar/pub. The service was friendly at the bar but it took what felt like a long time to receive my food when they weren't busy at all. I got their spicy guac burger which was really good while my relative got one of their chicken sandwiches. We both enjoyed the entrees and fries we got. We were disappointed in the rolled tacos we got which tasted like delimex frozen taquitos you buy in grocery stores and Costco. I'll have to give them another try and order a drink after seeing frozen beverages as well as a decent cocktail menu. I'd personally stay away from some of their appetizers and only get a sandwich or burger if you're hungry though.
google avatar

Miles S.

Yelp
Super chill energy here. Everyone I talked to was friendly without doing too much, and the vibe was a mix of laid-back and intentional. Didn't buy anything big, but I appreciated how patient and genuine the staff were. Definitely a good spot to stop by if you're in the area.

Yelp
This was my first time coming here i had walked by several times but never stopped in, but looked at their menu outside of the establishment and the buffalo chicken sandwich with fries caught my eye so i decided to go in. I was greeted by Joshua a very polite friendly bartender, he was very knowledgeable of the menu and drinks i happened to by chance come in at their happy hour got a tecate he rimmed it with tajin and a lime it was so good and refreshing. I didn't have to wait very long for my meal it was so delicious I will be back to try their famous carne asada fries they marinate the meat its made from scratch im here for that. The place is huge three different bars with different seating areas even an outside patio the decor is awesome and inviting if you're in the area stop by also they stay open until 2am thats something we need in old sac for sure.
google avatar

Yelp
A vibe!!! I've been here a few times and love this dive bar in old sac! You go in and go downstairs which I think is unique! They have pool tables, good music and two different bars! They also serve food.. although I've never eaten here! They have a huge outdoor patio in the back! Most recently I tried the spicy marg! Made perfectly! This place is like a trendy cute dive bar!
google avatar

Yelp
What a hidden gem! This place is HUGE and has a lot going on, from pool to shuffleboard to a lovely outside patio. There are multiple bars and a full service kitchen, and each room kinda has a different vibe to it. Joshua was our mixologist when we were there, and he KILLED it. We didn't have a cocktail menu but he was able to expertly make everything we asked for, and did the same for other customers. I had one of the best Bees Knees ever, in addition a lovely White Linen and expertly crafted Old Fashioned. The food was delicious, classic american. The smokey pesto chicken sandwich was a highlight, but my wife enjoyed the spicy guac burger as well. We'll definitely be back here to try out new cocktails and food!
google avatar

Jasmine C.

Yelp
Honey and the Trapcat serves your classic bar food, but we genuinely enjoyed everything we ordered. We went around 5 p.m., and it was still pretty quiet--seems like the after-work crowd rolls in later. The place is spacious, divided into three sections, with music playing in the background. It definitely has a fun, laid-back vibe. I ordered a turkey burger, and honestly, it was one of the best I've had. Turkey burgers can sometimes taste too much like turkey and not enough like a burger, but this one nailed the balance. I also got a fried vegetable--can't remember which one--but it mostly just tasted like fried breading with a hint of veggie. My friends liked their meals too. I'd absolutely go back.

Yelp
Cool spot in the alley in Old Sac. Causal Bar seating, tables and outside seating. They have happy hour. You order food at the bar counter. The drinks are good and the bar food is delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
Thanks Chef Bentley and the bar/ staff. Stopped in for a burger. My little guy is super picky and they accommodated that special order on a burger. Really enjoyed the Hot Mess Hot Chicken sandwich. Fries and everything was fresh and tasty!!!!

Yelp
I stopped here for dinner after a day at Sacramento Comic Con. I found this place, so decided to give it a try. The staff was very friendly and answered all my questions about the menu. The fries themselves were quite good. The cheese was nice and melted, and the fries were nice and crispy. The meat, which I think was made from hamburger patty, had an amazing taste.
google avatar

Destinie Z.

Yelp
Really dark and dim basement type bar in old sac. They have a vast bar menu and decent food selection. The carne asada fries were a nice mid-drinking snack that filled me up and tasted pretty good. They make a decent gin and tonic as well. If you're in the area and looking for a cocktail and a snack this is an alright place to have those.
google avatar

Kerensa U.

Yelp
In search of a revolving signature drink menu, custom cocktails or late-night bites, Honey comes in clutch every time! I love the underground layout, and how there are different rooms and 3 bars to settle up at, as well as the pool tables and the effort they make in occasionally catering to local event crowds with themed drinks and playlists. The stars are the staff as well as the drinks, made with creative ingredients and at a reasonable price point. A must-try is the breakfast burger. They serve food till 2 a.m. too, which is hard to find in Sac (at a bar at least). Cheers!

Yelp
Seek out this little hidey-hole and dive right in! Tasty affordable food and bar snacks, creative drinks, and a fun and friendly staff. This place is an Old Town Sac winner!

Yelp
If you don't have enough employees to actually feed people stop lying and advertising theirs food until 2am. The bartender is so overwhelmed he addressed nobody for 20 minutes and by the time he gets to you you'll be eating next week at the earliest. Avoid this place if you have a lunch shorter than 2 hours.
google avatar

Jessica L.

Yelp
4.5/5. The bartenders are great and the selection of food is decent. They have lots of different seating as well as some TVs mounted. Theres also some games available even though we didn't play. It would probably be a completely different experience at a different time but I enjoyed the quiet vibes around 9pm. Only loosing points because the bathroom was disgusting.
google avatar

Yelp
Wandering through midtown looking for eats at 1am and was referred here. Super laid back vibe with a full menu of options. Bar had tons of options. They were spinning old school hip hop. I loved that the menu had a decent variety of options. I ordered mozzarella sticks and two pieces of bacon. They took a long time to come out, and it wasn't that crowded, but they were decent. I head a lot of the regulars order variations of the guac burger. Can't speak to parking because we ubered in. The bar tender Emily had the best energy.
google avatar

Monique H.

Yelp
Strolled in on the late night on a bicycle ride with a group of friends. And we needed some food and drinks. Service was kind of slow but it was served at the bar so expected. The food took a little bit longer than expected to come out but when it did everything was super tasty and made to order. I would recommend this place. I like the patio and all the space that is inside.

Yelp
A fantastic bar in old town. Walk downstairs to this huge establishment, with pool tables, digital jukebox, outside seating, food, two separate bars, and more. No matter what drink I get here-paloma, lemon drop, long island, porn star martini-they nail it every time. They also have my favorite beer, blue moon, on tap! Bartenders are attentive. They don't rush your drink, they take their time to make the perfect cocktail. There's several water dispensers around, so you don't have to ask (my friends and I tend to get pretty sloshy here, so that's very helpful). Food here is great too, I love the carne asada fries.

Yelp
This place was a massive let down on Labor Day weekend. The one thing they have going for them is that the space is big and seems fun when full and their outdoor space was also really nice but overall they did not impress at all. The wait for drinks was absolutely insane at a very empty bar. I could not believe how slow the woman behind the bar was moving on the night of 5/26. I have never waited this long for drinks even at a completely slammed and packed bar. We didn't even order food because drinks took so long and she immediately moved on from us and was clearly moving on to other people and didn't want to further help us. We just completely gave up. The drinks were okay but they ran out of everything but still left specials up so that was disappointing. Overall not worth the insane wait unfortunately!

Yelp
I've visited here twice. Once a few years back in the middle of the pandemic, when going out was still somewhat taboo; and once recently when I was in the area and had extra time to kill. First visit was with a few friends, I suggested this place because of the outdoor patio. Old Sacramento is a fun place to take out of towners. It was hot that day and the H&TC was crowded but the lower back bar (nearest the patio) was open and had super quick service despite the crowd that weekend. Last visit was mid-week 8/3 just after happy hour ended, less crowded but still busy. Noticed a lot of families with young children this time. Seems like a great place for parents to have an early evening relaxing with friends. The weather has been so mild, I could have sat on this patio for hours. Love the water fountains. Highly suggest the $10 slushies for a boozy and wallet friendly drink. The fries were really good too.

Yelp
Good great , service fast . Didn't get a chance to experience the bar or drinks but the line was pretty lengthy so I'm sure the drinks are good. -But as soon as we sat down , we left because we looked above us and it had n*gg^r written on the ceiling by the tables. You ain't gotta tell me twice an establishment ain't for me
google avatar

Paige G.

Yelp
One of my favorite neighborhood gems. Whatever you what they'll make. Just tell them what you like. I love that they also have a great wine selection and it's two glasses an order (half a bottle) so it's actually a steal. Molly is my favorite bartender! She's so nice and knows her craft! Food is good I love the booth burger, and the egg rolls. The patio is typically where I go to chill with a drink.

David D.

Yelp
Food was good and the drinks were ok. My main complaint is how long it took for the food to get out to us on a weeknight that didn't seem very busy.
google avatar

Bonnie T.

Yelp
We were walking by and saw the drink menu, I have never been there before and wasn't sure what to expect being it's down some stairs. I had an awesome Paloma! It's on the all day drink specials menu. If you like Paloma's that was tasty. We also had a Michelada a little spicy, I would order both again. The bartenders we attentive, even if one wasn't sure what we were ordering when I said a blood beer :)

Yelp
I visited Honey and The Tract while in the area with a group and in search of a place to get food and drinks. Located in the middle of Old Town and on the basement level of Front Street, you'll walk downstairs to find a few large rooms with a bar, some seating, and an outdoor patio around back. If you enter from the alley from around back, you can walk in on the bar level to avoid the stairs in the front entrance, if accessibility is a concern. The bartender was great, he was super friendly and handled a crazy busy bar all on his own with no assistance. They have a good selection of drinks, and when I asked the bartender for a spicy margarita, he asked how spicy and how sweet, which I really liked! It was a great margarita! I ordered the smokey pesto sandwich for dinner, which was very good. The food came out pretty quickly, too. I had a good time sitting out on the patio on a nice night, and would definitely return.
google avatar

Kelsey L.

Yelp
Really cool place, we didn't eat but the food looked great! my whole group enjoyed the drinks, it was very chill on a Sunday afternoon. I was able to ask the bartender for something sour apple and yummy since it wasn't busy, and what he gave me was perfect! it was fun to play pool also! Great time and we will be coming back!

Frank A.

Yelp
The food is super good! Drinks always on point! And the vibes there are always super chill and friendly! Can't forget about the pool tables! Definitely repeating !
google avatar

Kristie T.

Yelp
My colleague and I came here for a late-night bite. We were diverted here by a lovely bartender at Finnegan's since their kitchen closes early and Honey and The Trapcat's kitchen stayed open. This place is in a basement. The music was chill hiphop, which I love. Wayyyy better than those establishments that just blast EDM the whole time as if they were a Vegas club. They also didn't turn it up too loud so we were still able to hear each other. The pool table is $10/hr. We opted out since we were tired from walking around downtown all day. We ordered fried zucchini fries which comes with a side of ranch. It didn't take too long to come out. Great quantity, definitely shareable. Not burnt or soggy, fried to perfection. This is a great place to have a seat and hang out. I'd definitely recommend checking it out!
google avatar

Toby N.

Yelp
Great drinks. Food though was an after thought. Felt thrown together possibly microwaved. Wasn't bad if you're drunk but we like great food then have some drinks
google avatar

Daniel M.

Yelp
Best bar and restaurant in Old Sac, hands down. Food is good and not too expensive, vibes are great, music adds to the feels, drinks are stellar and the staff is super cool. I come here every time I'm in old town. If you haven't been, definitely recommend this place!
google avatar

Jaylen H.

Yelp
The drinks were honestly really good although more on the pricey side. We waited nearly 30-45 min for our food for it to come out cold and not good. I was disappointed especially because of how much you pay to receive lack luster food .

Saurav A.

Yelp
Dive bar with good food The ambience won't impress you but the food and service was great
google avatar

Douglas L.

Yelp
First...it's a dive bar, so review is based on that standard. It's more for drinking and dancing, good service, good drinks, good food...great prices. 4 draft beers, carna asada fries (yummy) and hot mess chicken sandwich (good). 48 bucks, not bad. Good for what it is! Wouldn't say no to going back. Very good dive bar.

Melissa B.

Yelp
The food runner guy had such a welcoming and sweet nature. Very nice. We went there after a Friday night Jack Frost show for Christmas. Had our 12 year old son with us. Loved that the sodas were served in highball glasses (or some other alcoholic glass). Reminded me of going to the bars with my dad when I was a little kid. Place was pretty clean while still rocking a dive vibe. Strange how dark it was with white walls compared to the Willamina's days with red and black. Food: burger looked great, mozzarella sticks basic but hot and crisp, the BLTA was good, would have enjoyed the peculiarly flavored aioli a bit more if the ciabatta bun wasn't so crispy/charred. Not at all burnt and maybe it was the quality of the bun in general but it was kind of tough to eat. Lots of perfectly cooked bacon. Why were the fries so basic but soooo tasty??? Nicely seasoned!! Good job. Patio seems to be a nice work in progress, I wish the place lots of success. Will def go back and try some loaded fries
google avatar

Cindy L.

Yelp
The vibe is cool here, pool costs $10/hour and shuffleboard is $5/hr. The drinks are extremely weak, I wish they would use a jigger since it kind of feels like a rip off. At least she only filled the cup 3/4 the way to keep it proportional I guess. People are cool, service is not
google avatar

Gregg R.

Yelp
I have visited this location (not this specific business) multiple times throughout the years. I've recalled at least 3 businesses out here and its been tough going but it seems like this location might have finally found a business that could last. We decided to visit this place early on a Saturday. It wasn't busy at first but as the night went on the crowd started to come in. This place defintely gives off a hole in the wall vibe but don't let that turn you off. The staff was great and really out quite bit of care into making our drinks. Very friendly all around and always a key part of any bar. We tried a bunch of their drink specials and liked all our drinks. We also ordered some food on this visit. Decent food all around, nothing to really wow me but paired with drinks it made for a great night with friends. I went with the burger but would definitely go with the Hot Mess Hot Chicken Sandwich next time.
google avatar

Gina S.

Yelp
Love the vibe here. Honey and the Trapcat is such a cool hangout in Old Sacramento. My favorite thing about ordering a drink here is that you can choose a spirit and tell them what you like and they will create something original and delicious. They have a huge selection of spirits as well as some drafts on tap. Bartenders and service is friendly and great. They also have a few pool tables and huge space inside for large parties or groups. The outdoor patio is great as well. There is also bar food that is pretty decent and hits just right when you need to soak up some alcohol lol. Whenever I bring visitors to Old Sac, I always make sure this is one of our stops!
google avatar

Lily M.

Yelp
Great service and the food was delicious Love the atmosphere and very chill vibes The staff was super nice!
google avatar

Yelp
Very cool hidden gem in old sac. Great staff. Friendly kind and helpful. Some very decent food at great prices. Very solid selection of craft beers on tap.Full bar with some nice NA offerings. Super open outdoor patio to take in a nice day. Plentiful pool tables. An excellent stop to pregame for events at the golden one center. Just a bit of a walk but it gets you a break from the over priced and crowded reality of DOCO spots. While it's nice to take in the DOCO crowds it's nice IMO to have adjacent option to just post up and chill. Highly endorsed.

Yelp
Bartender JONAH has all the ingredients and decorations for marvelous craft drinks. My friends have different tastes and appetites and he hasn't disappointed them with his requested creations. I love beer and late night food bars and this place fills that space. About 6 beer drafts in addition to bottles. The asparagus spears taste healthy and the chicken fingers has a special sweet onion breaded coating. Friendly staff. Pool tables. 2 bars. In and outdoor seating. Late night space.
google avatar

Kaleigh C.

Yelp
Shout out to our awesome bartender for making my new favorite drink - Raspberry Paloma. A paloma was on the drink special for the night but she offered any flavor and we couldn't pass up some raspberry. We collectively tried the carne asada fries, chicken tenders, and hot mess chicken sandwich. Food was bomb, music was poppin', vibe was 10/10. Would definitely stop again! Look forward to trying it out on the weekend when its more active.
google avatar

Irish C.

Yelp
Bartenders food everybody there man is worth checking out the selection of loaded fries and the variety. the BLT with avocado is bomb.
google avatar

Amanda S.

Yelp
This place is pretty cool. It's down stairs and the space is large! The bar tenders were super nice and there are pool tables and a large patio. They have a food menu that is reasonably priced too. It has a speakeasy vibe and the ambiance is awesome!
google avatar

Joyce T.

Yelp
This place was made especially for me. Full bar, late night good food, in and outdoor seating and good selection of music. Our bartender JONAH has all the accoutrements to make a "fancy-pants/complex mix" and yes he did! Fruits, mixes and special concoctions in bottles. Of course, full bar, beers and ciders. Asparagus fries, chix tenders, burger,.... The list goes on and on! Spicy burgers to pub grub. Lots of pool tables. Friendly staff. Gist and bartender so welcoming. I don't want to leave!!!

Yelp
Not sure how I missed this place but stumbled across it looking for a place to dip my beak before a concert later that evening. The location is great; a basement (or, more accurately, ground floor -- before the city was raised 10-feet in the 1860s). Anyway, it's a much bigger space than I envisioned with multiple rooms, two separate bars, several TVs, and different seating options. They had a few cocktail specials but no menu, per se. No worries, I had one of my standards, an Old Fashioned. They had a decent bourbon and rye selection (I chose PiggyBack Rye) and the bartender was skilled in the care of his preparation. Good glassware, whiskey cubes, and an excellent drink all around. The food options were typical bar food but good and well-prepared. The only ding I'd give it is that the TVs can be pretty loud and the lighting a bit harsh (though the bartender did dim the lighting a bit which made it MUCH better). Definitely worth a visit if you're visiting Old Sacramento.
google avatar

Madison A.

Yelp
I love this hidden gem! Old Sacramento can get super busy on the weekend so heading downstairs to this place is awesome. You order at the bar and then find a seat. When I have been there is only one bartender so they line can be a wait. But once your order the food comes quickly. The menu is your usually American food and offers many options for everyone. I love the outdoor patio! Take a seat with your family and escape the hustle and bustle.
google avatar

Kearsti A.

Yelp
The drinks and vibes are great! I wouldn't go there for the food again, but the bar is enjoyable! The bartenders seem to be in a hurry constantly and poured the wrong drinks a couple times, but for a Friday I guess that's excusable? We heard such positive things on social media and it's definitely not the worst bar in Old Sac!
google avatar

Della N.

Yelp
When I first visited honey and the trap at a few years ago it was such a cute little hang out spot. It was clean and inviting and the bartender always had on an old time bartender suit. We used go quite often before I moved away so it was the first place I wanted to visit on my trip back. The service was non existent. The staff were dressed unprofessional and disheveled and conversed amongst themselves. The back patio was so dirty that I decided I needed to leave. I'm sorry to see what has happened to one of my favorite establishments
