Best Detroit Restaurant Tamales | Eater Detroit

"One of Detroit’s most beloved Mexican specialty supermarkets, Honey Bee’s tamale selection is great for a quick weeknight food run. Grab a dozen slender tamales filled with pork in red sauce in the prepared food section and reheat accordingly. Not that there will be any leftovers but if you did want to save some for later, these babies do well in the freezer. And for those who are looking for an already-frozen option, those are also available." - Serena Maria Daniels

Excellent fresh produce. Great meat/deli counter. Excellent selection for pantry items and locally made baked goods. Complete frozen food section. Plenty of parking onsite. Friendly, helpful staff. A pleasant spot to shop and plan your cooking adventures.

Google
Every time I go there are zero spanish speaking workers in the front 🤨 can't hire anyone bilingual or do you not care? Profits off of Mexican culture but puts zero effort in communicating with the community. Even when trying to communicate in English just cause you have a spanish accent the cashiers look at you weird and dismisses you to another worker since they can't be bothered to listen to your question.

Google
Honey Bee is a Mexicantown tradition. If you live near it you already go there and if you live in other parts of the city or out in the suburbs you should make the trip. The price and quality of the fresh meat more than covers the cost of gas. The produce cost and is hit or miss and the dairy is expensive so get that elsewhere. But the fresh meat and imported Mexican chilies and seasoning alone are worth the trip. They also have imported snacks and munchies like Frito Lay and Doritos flavors imported from Mexico and brands that are new discoveries. If you love discovering something new, this place is for you.

Google
One of Detroit’s great Mexican grocery stores, La Colmena (the honey bee)! Great selection, service, hospitality, and always coming up with new surprises. We have have a great assortment of ethnic and specialty groceries, and restaurants in this town.

Google
Such an amazing little gem of a market hidden away in Detroit!! They had an amazing selection of the normal staples that you would find in any market as well as a ton of authentic Spanish items! Everything was very fresh and the store was very clean. I will absolutely be going back in the future to stock up on my dried chili peppers ❤️🔥

Google
I get to come here once a year. Part of my birthday celebration, my niece Mary, brings me after a day of celebration. Best food. Love the rice pudding. Love my homemade tostada shells. Also, the best Delmonico steak ever! See you next year!

Rahul S

Google
Went there for lunch. The lunch special is awesome and so reasonably priced. A clean grocery store with amazing selection and competitive prices.

Yelp
They have places like this in Texas.I lived there 10 years Honey Bee is as good or better in my book.

Yelp
This place is amazing. The meat counter is second-to-none, and their chorizo sends me into orbit. Hot sauce and seasoning selection are top notch, as well as staples like rice, tortillas, fruits, and veggies. Aisles are a little cramped, but it's a city grocery store, so that's common. Everything is incredibly clean and well-maintained. Meat counter and cashier workers are top notch. Friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable! This is one of my go-to grocery stores, and I highly recommend it!

Yelp
During a recent trip to Detroit Gad the pleasure of visiting this old favorite. Such a great variety of Latin inspired foods. Has expanded since I left Michigan and I'm happy for them!

Yelp
Well as you can see I come here for my mangos. I know they serve food here which is great but when you are down here by Southwest Detroit there are too many taco trucks to explore. This grocery store is fast for any food thoughts that you might have. For us it's fast and convenient just around the corner. We like that fact that it's here, we just think it should be open until 9:00 pm. We like it more because the management themselves like what they do. That is providing a good sense of their latest product and provide a very good happy medium. The customers here always feel safe when we come around good feelings here for being in the neighborhood. We love to shop here especially in environment that is not stressful. Which at times it s hard to find in a grocery store. That is all. Chief Bring sense of your best when it comes to setting the example.

Yelp
Maybe the newer of the super-mercados in the area and likely catering to Corktowners more than Mexicantown residents but it was much easier to navigate with a lot less foot traffic on the aisles. The produce was beautiful and the meat selection looked really fresh. Lots of cool and interesting finds around the entire store.

Yelp
Great place for Latin American specialty groceries! This is my go-to when I need tomatillos, nopal, epazote, etc. They also have great fresh and frozen tamales (my favorite are the cheese and jalapeño ones). I will say that the prices are a little higher so this isn't my standard place for weekly supplies.

Yelp
Bad customer service, the milk I bought was expired, Dead wasps everywhere bushes were poorly taken care of very over grown Overall hated it, drove 3 hours from Canada to Detroit for The honeybee, wasted my time -Norma

Yelp
I love shopping at this supermarket! It's always impeccably clean and well-organized. The shelves are neatly stocked, and everything feels so fresh. They keep the store updated and inviting, making each visit a pleasant experience. Highly recommend to visit!

Yelp
Amazing place!! Like Cantoros in plymouth for italian but Mexican food. Hot take out lunches available. Tons of detroit police eat here. That should tell you how good it is! Extremely clean and organized!

Yelp
I LOVE the B. I've been a lifelong customer for roughly forty years. Their lunch specials and hot food section is superb. The grocery store itself is kept immaculately clean. Produce is always fresh and organized. Great selection everywhere. Good customer service all around. Today was the exception for good service. Wednesday. July 26th. 630PM. I asked the produce guy for corn with husk on. He told me he couldn't do it and to come back tomorrow and ask. WTF, mate?! Every other time, I got my corn no problem. I used to work there, I know how bothersome pausing stacking tomatoes and going in back to grab some corn can be. But it's called customer service. Drove out of my way to their rivals to get my corn. But now I have happy little grillable corn, which is nice. I created a Yelp account simply to call out the lazy produce guy. I wanted to also give attention to how great the B really is for balance. All food pics are mine, made with ingredients from the B. ‍‍‍

Yelp
A Detroit institution, it's part of our city shopping trifecta (+Eastern Market and WF) but you could easily do all your shopping there. At this point my body is at least 20% Honey Bee guac and 20% Honey Bee green sauce.

JP P.

Yelp
Yummy brfast burritos and salsa. Love fresh spices by weight and great options more than grocery stores.
google avatar

Derek D.

Yelp
The bacon breakfast burritos are very good they have green and red sauce both of them very good. I like the green the best for $1.99 and .50cents for the sauce close to work.
google avatar

Justine S.

Yelp
This is my go to for ALL things Hispanic. The produce and meats are always fresh and the spice selection is incredible (not just the expansive selection of Goya products)! After shopping I always have to buy 4 or 5 dozen freshly made Tamales. My family usually finishes off 2 before we even get home they are THAT good. Definitely the place to shop if you're planning on making something authentic and delicious!

Yelp
This gem is only 12 miles from my house. We are so lucky to have an authentic Mexican Grocery in our town. The people that work here are all wonderful people. It is my favorite store to shop at.
google avatar

Melanie D.

Yelp
After leaving a positive review in the past, this has tipped the scales. Thick slices of grayish-greenish ham from the deli counter. Mmmmm.
google avatar

Jessica C.

Yelp
While Honey Bee is a much needed market/grocery store for this community - the hidden food counter in the back corner is the gem of Honey Bee. their home made chips and salsa are to die for and are a necessity every time i come grab lunch from here. You can't go wrong with their guacamole either. For $5 everyday the back counter (the hidden gem) has a lunch special that is out of this world. Personally, my favorites are Tuesdays and Fridays.
google avatar

Yelp
A wonderful little market with Mexican and imported groceries, fresh meat, fresh produce and specialty deli items. Tucked into the edge of Mexican town on Bagley Street. Their prices can't be beat. Store is amazingly clean and well stocked. Customer service is very good. Plenty of parking. The best part is that they carry very authentic salsas and sauces, spices and other hard to find items. Cash and credit. This is arguably the best Latin Market in SW Detroit.
google avatar

Yelp
As if we didn't already love this place enough...Today I was in with my little cousins (to pick up the delicious premade enchiladas for the easiest dinner ever). One of them accidentally hit a tray, which tumbled to the ground and broke up onto the floor. I brought it up to the counter to pay for ($25...not a small amount!) and was told not to worry about it. I definitely expected to pay for it since it was entirely our fault, so I couldn't believe the customer service today. Thank you, Honey Bee! We will continue to be loyal customers :) Best chips, best guacamole, best enchiladas and tamales. We are so lucky to have this spot in our neighborhood!
google avatar

Yelp
Outstanding selection of fresh vegetables and meat, as well as packaged ingredients/condiments for Latin cooking. I only stopped in to look for some dried chili varieties that I have a hard time finding even at some Mexican markets. I found them, in the midst of many, many others. Then I turned around and saw I'd only been looking at the small bags! So many peppers to simmer, so little time.. Very easy to find with abundant on site-parking. Was tempted to try the take-out window but I came a little early for lunch. Picked up some housemade guac and salsa instead and both were excellent. Salsa veggie bites were very crisp. I'll be looking for an excuse to return.

Chris N.

Yelp
Nice selection of goods. The 2 different types of salsa I got were very good. Had some Mexican spices I couldn't find anywhere near me.

Fisher W.

Yelp
Very clean and well stocked market, a nice variety of items and good prices for meat and produce!
google avatar

Maria C.

Yelp
Exceptionally clean and organized, all the products needed for Latin foods. I enjoy strolling through just to see all the goodies. Full service meat counter and ready to take fully cooked foods.
google avatar

Yelp
What a gem of a market is La Colmena. The produce has a reasonable selection of fruits and veggies with decent prices fit for a multicultural neighborhood. Much respect for the well-placed bags of tortilla chips, containers of salsas and guacamole right at the front door. Priorities, you know? And the deli in the back serves up some righteous tamales and breakfast burritos. I cross darn near the entirety of Detroit to shop here. Every chance I get.

Valeria S.

Yelp
7/28/23, I waited at the deli counter, one woman was waited on before me even though I was there first, the clerk looked me dead in the eye mine you, ok maybe a one off, after her another woman walked up he waited on her, I decided to see if it would happen again, it did! I put my basket on top of the deli counter and left as to not create a scene! Very blatant you know what was happening, needless to say even though I'm sure they don't really care, I'll never go there again.
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
Great place to buy groceries for Latin cooking. Their house made guacamole is excellent and their chips are as well. The produce has always been good quality and they have a very good selection. I stopped in earlier today and had some of their prepared food for lunch. They had the Steak a la Mexicana which came with tortillas, beans, and rice. The food was excellent and the service was great as always.
google avatar

Maya C.

Yelp
Love this Market! Clean, vibrant and modern while still providing the feeling of tradition! Their homemade salsa, guacamole, and chips greet patrons at the door. It is hard to take only one sample and you really have to try all the different levels of heat within the salsas and the cactus and pico too. I take home heaps of everything and family and friends love it! The produce, meats and cheeses are all top-quality! I often get their pre-marinated chili-lime chicken and fajita chicken breasts. They cook up nicely for a variety of Mexican-Inspired home cooking! I am really attracted to their large variety of hot sauces and spices. These are items you just can not find in regular grocery stores. Honey bee does have some pre-made foods which always seems to attract a decent line. I have tried the breakfast burritos, but I have to come there when I am not already full from a local restaurant! But, I like that they do have prepared foods and it would be great if they had a little place to dine-in as well. I always make a point to stop at this great store when I am in the area!

Erica G.

Yelp
Honeybee has never been the most authentic imo but I really hate to see it is now focused on serving the caucasian palate. HOT DOGS EN LOS FRIJOLES CHARROS? Little, old, dry ones at that. And no flavor? And the salsas have water added to them. Slides right off the chip. The actual audacity. Pray for southwest Detroit. Watering down the culture is all good for nobody.
google avatar

Marcos R.

Yelp
This is my favorite grocery store in Detroit! Well worth the drive and all of the produce is always in the best shape! I am never disappointed walking in here and I never leave empty handed!
google avatar

Nicole E.

Yelp
I enjoy browsing the aisles and discovering the premade dishes here. They oftentimes have guacamole or salsa with corn chips by the produce area. They sell cactus and every ingredient you could possibly need for whatever Latin inspired dish you are craving. They have a meat counter as well as a large section of cheese. This is a one stop shop for taco/fajita, burrito night at home or for a party. They have a decent dairy cooler on the back end of the store and have quite a few cash registers for their busy days.

John C.

Yelp
Can't believe it took me this many years to find this store! Wish I would have known about it a long time ago. Authentic Mexican brands and great prices!
google avatar

Katherine W.

Yelp
This place is amazing! I cannot begin to understand the very few poor reviews. Bright and clean, well organized and pleasingly arranged, fair prices, good products! Its not hipster (seriously?); there is a mix of fancier/bougier products but plenty of normal stuff, too. Its just a lovely mix. The employees are so nice! Its only 10 minutes from downtown and I plan on coming here often!
google avatar

Chase S.

Yelp
The best fresh food in all of Mexicantown! I tried their new item - the hummus and it was so delicious. Every time I stop in grabbing their spicy salsa and guacamole is a must.
google avatar

Yelp
Know going into this establishment that you mean nothing to them. Your safety, your patronage, your feelings are absolutely inconsequential. All of the bright cheery colors are bullsh*^t to get your money with no regard to you as a human being. The variety, ambience and presentation are the mirrors. You place your produce in plastic bags and tie them so that only your germs are on them, right? Twice I have had employees take my food out of the protective bags and handle them by hand. No explanation, no waring, as I am watching in horror. I was not allowed to place my food on the conveyor with the person in front of me but you can take my produce out of the bag with the same glove used on their food and I am supposed to be so stupid, that I say nothing? I am not one to believe all of this COVID hype, but.. We are supposed to be in a pandemic state!!!! When I brought this to the attention of management they could give two sh**s. I will never, ever spend one more dime in this non-empathetic, self entitled, self serving dump. I have seriously shopped in this market for 15 years and they treated me like I was to blame on both occasions. There are plenty of Mexican specialty grocers all over Detroit. If you buy into this yuppie driven local grocer facade they have presented than it is on you. When did we as a community stop caring for people as human beings? I feel heartbroken. Welcome to the new way of life. People are nothing, money is king.

Yelp
I just ate a pound of carne asada with guacamole that I bought from Honey Bee over the weekend #NoRegrets So happy to finally have stopped by this Mexicantown market - good hours and big parking lot. Will definitely come back for prepared meats and quick Mexican foods. Fresh produce looks good too and at fair price! Prepared guacamole and salsa are bombbbbbbb!!!! Meat counter is awesome. Carne asada is not for grill, though, as it is very chopped up but was only $4.99 a pound! Street tacos only $1.50 and were so good. Also had a pork tamale - yum! $9 for a dozen. Will definitely be back, so happy to find this large market close to downtown
google avatar

Maddy R.

Yelp
I'm honestly really offended that no one told me about this hidden gem earlier. I mean, this place is amazing. Whether it's prepared food or just the endless supply of ingredients, there's something for everyone. Definitely make your way back to the back counter for homemade chips and salsa or guacamole. They have daily lunch specials for really great prices and everything I've had so far has been delicious. They also have tons of Mexican candies and unique ingredients, for my Mexican foodie friends. Everything is really fresh! So when you get tired of Whole Foods (and their prices), you should definitely check out Honey Bee. You won't regret it, amigo!

Yelp
Fun place to stop and and check out. Was my favorite until stopping into E&L market. Clean and has fresh favorites. Trendy hipster vibes.
google avatar

Al P.

Yelp
Fun food and shopping. A super selection of hot made to order foods in this giant market. A small outside eating area that we get some tacos and beer to enjoy the views outside. Food samples and the best Guacamole that I've ever found in a market. The Chorizo is always my long time favorite.
google avatar

Yelp
Buy chips, guacamole, pick, and salsa here as a reminder of the Midwest's strong Mexican heritage. Honey Bee La Colmena is a Detroit staple on the east side of southwest Detroit. This neighborhood, split by the Ambassador Bridge, and chockfull of industry (and its associated pollution) remains vibrant. Honey Bee adds to that, anchors it even. It is a full service grocery with a carry out deli. You'll find all the vegetables and fruits you desire, and some you're excited to try. It's a great place to stock up on limes, mangoes, avocados, but they also carry items that tend to be a bit harder to find, satsumas this week, for example. Along the back of the store is a full meat counter. It contains marinated and pre-cut choices, along with plenty of slabs that butchers will cut to your specifications. The meat here is of good quality. Honey Bee carries a good amount of dairy products, Mexican-style ones and the usual suspects. Try some fresh farmers cheese for a real treat, or some Mexican-style drinkable yogurt. They have a deli / prepared foods section with rotating goodness. They usually have ready-to-cook burritos and other treats, too. The dry grocery is full of Mexican imports and everything else you need to stock up. Take note of good quality, well-priced items like spices and dried chilies. Peruse their cooking section to find a large pot or other utensil that you need, but didn't know where to find. Change up your party with Jarritos soda and Topo Chico. Honey Bee La Colmena is a large, clean, well-serviced grocery that is an example of what our communities need, and you'll walk out with something delicious!

Yelp
Phenomenal. Who knew a grocery store could be this good. Mexican town of Detroit. At the back is a busy, popular take out area Got a cold the day I was there, the chicken noodle soup was perfect/appreciated and tacos excellent. Glad I went at 11, lines get long at lunch. A must visit for all future trips, wish they had one in Toronto!

Nicholas R.

Yelp
This place is a serious market. They make 4 or 5 different salsas, lots unique veggies like cactus. Just simple great food and products.
google avatar

Jennifer T.

Yelp
I've been coming here for years. Not sure why I've never remembered that I hadn't reviewed yet. My husband first introduced me to this place. His family being Mexican, they had taken him since he was young. They have a great selection of everything. Fresh vegetables, fruit, fresh meat and seafood. Of course they have the traditional Mexican staples, beer, wines etc. They even have a small selection of frozen items. We always stop in for the homemade Guacamole and chips. The salsa is just OK.... To spicy for me and always tastes like canned tomatoes. In the summer we can't get enough of the Paletas (Popsicles) which sadly they don't have year around. They are so unique and delicious. The Pina Colada with a cherry of course and the Rice Pudding are my two favorites. They have other flavors as well. Wish they wouldn't melt before the long drive home so we could buy more. Try them if you haven't yet.

Yelp
Great Mexican grocery store with awesome selection of Mexican items like Topo Chico water, tasty house made salsas, guacamole and chips. Awesome selection of chorizo, basically anything you'd want for making Mexican food. Very clean and extremely friendly and helpful staff! We love this place and go here whenever we are in Detroit as we live in the suburbs.
google avatar

Yelp
Cute little Mexican grocery store. Lots of unique candies and such there, worth a visit if you're looking for specialty items or want some local fresh guacamole and salsa
google avatar

Yelp
Honey Bee was good. After living in Phoenix for 8 years, I'm picky with my Mexican food. Lunch specials are good deals. I'll go back.
google avatar

Karen H.

Yelp
Having lived in South Texas as well as New Mexico I feel I have an appreciation for some Hispanic origin cuisine. Honeybee has an extremely large assortment of choices in Hispanic and Latin types of ingredients/ foods and an amazing assortment as well as homemade items that are just astounding and delicious
google avatar

Tyna D.

Yelp
Honey Bee Market is fabulous! The staff is very helpful and always friendly, the produce is wonderful ... the freshest, most beautuful fruits and vegetables all at really great prices, the prepared salsas and guacamole are so delicious, the meats and seafood are all exceptional and very fresh, and there is a terrific selection of grocery items ... canned goods, bagged snack items, spices (Oooh, the selection of bagged bulk spices!! ), and even a nice variety of frozen foods. The homemade tamales are a great deal and so tasty! I wish I had taken photos to add to this review because everything we bought was beautiful! We've been coming here for years and the place has only gotten better and better! I highly recommend!

Yelp
I have been going to honey bee for a very long time and they have all the goodies you can ask for
