The Keith Lee Effect: D.C. Area Restaurants Sell Out After TikTok Critic’s Visits | Eater DC

"I felt nostalgic eating this Southeast D.C. curry-out takeout — the fried rice paired with salt-and-pepper chicken wings smothered in the District’s mumbo sauce tasted to me like a sweet-and-sour duck-sauce and I gave the $12 takeout order an 8.6 out of 10. My family paid for future meals for the rest of the day and walked the neighborhood telling residents there was free food, and by the time we left a small line had formed." - Emily Venezky

Google
Wings are great, perfectly crispy Hot and sour soup was also very good with a wide assortment of ingredients and plenty of egg, tofu, and meat in it Veggies in the szechuan chicken were barely cooked, I was basically eating raw mushrooms. Fried rice was alright, tender and moist, but super plain w no veggies or egg in it.

Anything I eat from here is good haven't been let down at all not once. I drive 7 miles just to eat here the Chinese spots around me are trash. Hong Kong is gonna serve you right. Updating with new photos because I'm still driving to get good food. The crab ragoons are my favorite i always order 2 1 for me 1 for the wife and kids lol

Google
Hong Kong Carry-Out (Near Eastern High School) I stopped by this morning and had a disappointing experience with the woman working the counter. Her tone was very rude, disrespectful, and combative — it felt like she was having a bad morning and taking it out on customers. Because of the attitude and lack of basic customer service, I decided not to buy my food. Just a heads-up to others: be aware when visiting. Customer service matters, and the staff here could really benefit from training — or possibly a change in personnel if this is a consistent issue.

Jeffrey K.

Google
The beef fried rice was disappointing. It was just rice and plain beef with bean sprouts and a little onion.

Carlton L.

Google
Food is bomb.com I would recommend anyone to this establishment they were cool and friendly it was also nice and clean

Google
Quick service for lunch ... I was in & out in less than 20 minutes! I was able to order chicken instead of beef N' broccoli...most places in DC/MD have charged extra for switching to poultry. I'm not sure if sitting next door is allowed...it may be a shared seating space. Only seating outside.

Google
I was so hungry and my son was using the truck so I walked to the carryout best decision ever the food was so good. Now I am hungry again lol 😋

Google
Typical Chinese restaurant. Pretty cheap food options though. Menu online was out of date so I added an updated one as of 3/5/21. Good sesame chicken combo. Rice was good, chicken decent. They use a heavy coating of bread on the fried chicken, but the meal was still good for the price. Will probably serve me for two meals worth

Yelp
Let me start with the best part-- the customer service. I called in my order. John had great energy and had no problem accommodating my request for light sauce on the sauteed broccoli. The restaurant is well-it and clean and they have duck, soy, and mustard on the counter so customers can grab as much as they want. SO much better than the spots that charge per pack. A really nice touch! The food is good. I got shrimp egg foo yung and hoped that it would have been more flavorful. It seemed to be lacking seasoning. Not salt, but something to add a richer flavor. BUT the gravy was not super heavy and cloying like it is at other places. So it does taste fresh. Same with the broccoli. It was a tad too crunchy, but that also made it seem fresh. A little more seasoning on the egg foo yung and a few more minutes on the broccoli and this spot could become my go to!

Yelp
The food was decent. I ordered fried rice and general tso tofu and egg rolls. Both were reasonable in taste. I wish there were more vegetables in the fried rice except just onion. I did find it was a bit pricey for just 3 items but that's what it's like in DC. I just happened to be driving by and saw the unassuming Chinese takeout building next to the bar and grill. They also forgot the egg rolls but were lucky to catch me before I pulled away from the curb.

Grace N.

Yelp
I ordered shrimp egg foo young lunch special. The wonton soup was fantastic, salt level was perfect! The egg foo young was delicious as well. Crab rangoon was really good as well. Must try! Service was great also!

Ursula L.

Yelp
The noodles were gummy. The lomein looked like it had a bunch of stuff from the garbage disposal. Taste wasn't good either. The peppersteak was mainly peppers & about 4 little strips of steak. Overall bad experience.

Yelp
I've been getting take out from here for several years. It is hit or miss. Today, with my Kung Pao Chicken it was a miss. The chicken was a bit tough. The normal Kung Pao spices were absent. It tasted more like a generic wok fried dish. Service was great, fast and efficient. It is an average neighborhood take out option in an area with limited options. What do you think?
google avatar

Yelp
As DC is a place that really lacks cheaper food options, I am glad that Hong Kong Carryout is here. This place carries all the staples of cheap Chinese food you'd like from fried rice to spring rolls to chicken, and not at too high of a price point. I got the walnut shrimp and the crab rangoons. The crab rangoons were perfect, they were everything I wanted. Fried and creamy goodness. After I took a bite of my first one, I was annoyed that I didn't get the larger option. 5/5. I also got the honey walnut shrimp. Listen for 15.25, I was a bit skeptical of the quality of it. And while it wasn't my favorite, there were some good notes about it. The fried rice that came with it was amazing. It was nostalgic in a way and better quality than other takeout places I had. The batter on the walnut shrimp though was lacking. It was a bit bland and I wish there had been more sweetness throughout the sauce itself (and more of the sauce), but I did like that it didn't make me feel disgustingly heavy (as some shrimp batters can) and I could taste the shrimp throughout. I am still on the journey to find my regular Chinese takeout place but I am glad to know that when I want a cheap and quick bite, I can come here.

Yelp
So here's the thing-- DC is full of carryouts (and for non-local fast food Chinese take out spots). You have so many options to pick from and they all have similar menus (like down to the color of the menu and font). BUT when it comes to taste, it's a whole new ball game. And This place taste good and is one of the cleanest carryouts I've been too (not mandatory but a good bonus). My review is specifically for my go-to meal here-- fried chicken wings and French fries with mumbo sauce. I've been eating this carryout staple my whole life and this place is amazing. The chicken is always hot and don't forget to ask them to fry it hard for an extra crispy bite. I really like their mumbo sauce but I know everyone has their preferences here. I'll say that it reminds me of the mambo sauce, in terms of the color (not too red), thickness (not too soupy), and taste (not overly sweet ). If you are looking for some bomb friend chicken wings and fries then go here (and BRING CASH ONLY). And I've personally never actually had their actual Chinese food but I would assume it's decent.

Yelp
Well.... What do I have to say about this one. I have never had chicken with feathers. I suppose this is the freshest chicken in DC? Killed and partial defeathered in the back of house? With that being said, the chicken up to the discovery of this piece was, dare I say, good? Lol. Eat at your own risk and hopefully you won't end up with chicken feathers. One of the reasons we picked this place was because it says they had Mumbo sauce but I'm not sure that's what we got. It looked and tasted like sweet and sour. Bright red in color. A little disappointed. Lastly, the fried rice was plain and meh, and the orange chicken had so much orange peel it was overwhelming. Side note: I ordered through UberEats so I didn't have a chance to ask clarify questions regarding Mumbo sauce so it is what it is. I'll try another Carryout before this trip is over.

Yelp
While chefs and restaurateurs despise Yelp, if there's one place no one can argue is reviewing carryout. It's the food of people and no matter how refined palate, your cravings cave you into going at least once a year. It's the type of food that unites people. That said, the average person could and should review carryout spots. If you browse Yelp, you'll notice most carryout places have fewer than 3 stars and many first hand accounts of food poisoning. So, when you stumble upon a 4-star carryout, you MUST go. That's how I came across Hong Kong Carryout. I used to live around the corner and it never ever caught my eye until Yelp pointed me there. After having dinner there, I see why it's rated so highly. It delivers you an experience, which us millennials love. It's a tiny house next to a bodega in Hill East off of the popular East Capitol Street. Despite the outside looking dirty, the inside is surprisingly bare and clean. There is a random picture of a city skyline inside and then the takeout window with a friendly guy behind it. Order a special or any item off their extensive menu and watch the older men make it through the window. There's a bench to sit on while you wait for your food. My friend ordered the chicken and broccoli per the cashier's recommendation, but the flavor fell flat. What did NOT disappoint was the sesame chicken. It's perfectly cooked and is full of flavor. Bot dishes came with rice and the large was more than enough for dinner AND lunch the next day- both just over $11. They have a fridge full of unhealthy drinks and the only water they have is bottled water you have to pay for (isn't that illegal to refuse free water to a customer?). Note: It's cash only, but there's an ATM just outside. It's been a full 36 hours and neither my friend and I are sick. That's winning in the carryout world.

Yelp
When you're hankering for traditional Chinese-American style carry-out, you're not expecting "authenticity" or "gourmet" or anything "fusion." No, what you're looking for is fast, no hassle, inexpensive, decent portion sizes, consistency across visits, and flavor. I've been surprised at how mediocre most Chinese-American carry-out -- or, frankly, the sit-down as well -- in DC is, but Hong Kong Carry-out hits all expectations. They don't deliver, but you can order via delivery services. But Hong Kong Carryout is so freaking fast I just usually order pick-up over the phone. When you order over the phone they end the call with "Okay, ready in 10 minutes." It takes me just about 10 minutes to drive from home to their location, and my order is almost always ready by the time I get there. I've tried a lot of dishes on the menu and the combos (smaller portion, but comes with a pile of fried rice and an egg roll) are a good deal. My regular order varies between the kung pao chicken, hunan beef, General Tso's chicken, szechuan beef, or lo mein. The egg rolls are the best I've found in DC, but the soups are just okay. The sleeper menu item is the Cold Noodle with Sesame Sauce. Again, if you're going here expecting something "epic," don't. If you're going here because you love traditional Chinese-American take-out joints and you appreciate fast, inexpensive, reliable, consistently above average dishes, you'll be satisfied.

Yelp
Not sure how this place could have 4 Stars - nothing I've tried is redeeming, not the wonton soup, nor the dumplings, nor the Kung Pao Chicken. The owners and staff are friendly though, even behind the bullet-proof partition. Watch out M-F around 2-4p when the nearby public school lets out and the place is invaded by teenagers who will ask for money and do their best to intimidate adults for no reason at all.

Yelp
This is an updated review ( January 2021): even before the pandemic, this place was for take out only, so the business during pandemic has increased. To my taste, it came as a trade off to the taste. Wonton soup - hardly 3 out of 5, weak broth, huge wontons ( lots of pastry, very little filling). Fried dumplings - 2 out of 5, before pandemic these were thin, crispy shell with juicy filling, now these are more like steamed buns with very very thick pastry shell and unimpressive blah filling. Chef's fried rice is ok but nothing special ( 3 out of 5). Fried Crispy beef was very good solid 4 out of 5 for those who like crispy beef,

Yelp
Would give a 3.5 but sadly that is not an option. Ordered lunch special through door dash after many word of mouth suggestions I try this place. Here is my breakdown. Sesame chicken: possibly one of the best I've had in DC. Sweet, crunchy and tons of flavor. Beef with broccoli- Okay. Could have used more brown sauce. Lo mein: very tasty. Dumplings: Very good. I got steamed and they were huge and well-filled. Crab Rangoon: I would get it 3.5/5. Young chows's is better Garlic Chicken: Just okay. I would skip. Hot and Sour soup: not good. Definitely not a fan. Overall a very good chinese take out place
google avatar

BellaB L.

Yelp
Food is good. The customer service is horrible. If you have time ride to the one on mlk the food is...honestly a bit better in my opinion
google avatar

Dana T.

Yelp
There is a serious lack of Chinese food in/near the Hill and HK Carryout hits the spot like Panda Express. My rating is based on the fact that the veggies were fresh tasting and not overcooked (limp and sad) and the flavors were spot on like one would expect from fried rice, Mongolian beef, chicken/veggies, etc. The only thing we ordered that was not good was the hot and sour soup....flat flavor. If I'm craving good Americanized Chinese food, this place will be my choice. Also, CASH only!
google avatar

Kyle O.

Yelp
Expectations aren't high going into takeout chinese but that said, this place fell below expectations. The "cold" noodles with sesame were HOT (temperature wise). The hot and sour soup was bland and overly corn starched. The dumplings were ok as was the fried rice.. edible but bland and forgettable. On a high note the chicken wings were great but the mambo sauce was essentially their standard sweet and sour sauce.
google avatar

Michael A.

Yelp
3.5 stars. It used to be my favorite takeout spot in the general area but the quality has gotten less consistent and the prices have increased significantly from a couple of years ago, even taking inflation into account. They used to have some of the best hot and sour soup in the city, not it's just above-average. They used to be great about adding just the right amount of sauce to their dishes but now the Orange Chicken and General Tso's is slathered in sauce like most other takeout joints. The Hunan and Schzuan have gotten greasier than used to be, too. It's still one of the better American-style Chinese takeout places between Hill East and H Street, the Kung Pao is still usually excellent, and the soups are still pretty good, but I only order from here ~1x every other month rather than 3x/month like I used to.
google avatar

Mari E.

Yelp
Fantastic flavor for a cash only establishment. Truly a hidden gem. I ordered the general tsos chicken, kung pao chicken, and lomein. All must haves

Carolyn H.

Yelp
I think that this is a healthier option for Chinese food. To me the seasoning was not like other Chinese food restaurants which I prefer the fatty or unhealthy brand. I would recommend it if you are looking for something a little healthier but if you want some Chinese food no This is not it for me.
google avatar

Jason L.

Yelp
Cash & Carry only!!! Had the General Tso's Chicken which was pretty good when you are starving. Wasn't crispy fried pieces like so many other Chinese Food locations, but that was good. Just soft pillow-like pieces with a helpful heaving of sauce.
google avatar

Cynthia S.

Yelp
This is the best Chinese carryout place I've ever eaten at. Their orange chicken actually tastes like oranges. You can tell that they use fresh premium ingredients in their food instead of throwing some generic sauce on everything. If you're in the Capitol Hill area and looking for a decent Chinese spot - this is it!
google avatar

Ann Karis Y.

Yelp
Ordered via DoorDash. They also deliver through UberEats. The food is delicious, clean and portions are large. One of the best Chinese takeout restaurants in DC!
google avatar

Morgan H.

Yelp
My favorite Chinese spot in the area! Great food and extremely fast if you're picking up. It's always fresh and hot. Remember that it's cash only but worth it. I would definitely recommend their fried dumplings and get those cheesesteak egg rolls. I know, not Chinese food but trust me - worth it! The general tso chicken and pork lo mein are some of my other go tos.
google avatar

Tonya S.

Yelp
Food is consistent in quality. We live all the way out in Pr Wm county so we tend to pop by whenever we're in the city to visit family. They open at 11 and there have been a number of times this was delayed by as much as 30/40/45 min which was disappointing when you're trying to place an order ahead of time for pickup.
google avatar

Aj T.

Yelp
Good chinese food spot. In a great location and easy to find off the street. They had the glass up, very quick and Ordered the fried rice, sweet & sour chicken and chicken & broccoli. It was all delicious

Yelp
I hadn't been here in a long while but I made it back. When I used to live in Lincoln Park I would come here every once in awhile and I appreciated the renovations. I put Carryouts, "the whole army of them" on pause but lately I've been stopping by for an order of fries. In my defense, my last visit was really to hold me over until I got home and to wait out rush hour traffic so 2 dollars and change spent on fries, a tad more expensive than other places, didn't break the bank. I get mine with Salt, Pepper and M(a/u)mbo Sauce and they really douse them here. Your fries will be swimming in it so you may want to ask for it on the side. I want to try the Sesame Chicken, so I may pull up one day to do so. Just not after school lets out because they definitely receive and after school rush. Nothing much I can say. I did learn that they sell cups of Plum Sauce for $.50. I learnt that whilst seated during my last visit. Learning something new on the daily.
google avatar

Bill C.

Yelp
First, the place is cash only and is only takeout. With that being said, the food was excellent. I had the best General Tso's chicken I've ever had. The Szechuan Triple (beef, chicken & shrimp) was outstanding. The restaurant was clean and the service was fast. Parking was on the street but easy to find. This place is my go-to Chinese food from now on. Highly recommended.
google avatar

Cody S.

Yelp
Hit or miss. I live down the street and order about monthly. 50% of the time its great, 50% of the time not so much. The portions are huge. They use fresh vegetables. I recommend the chicken and broccoli, and the general tsao wings are great when they aren't over cooked.
google avatar

Galen S.

Yelp
I order my food from doordash , 4 wing, fries, and Sweet Tea all was good but that Mumbo sauce was bombbbbbbb A1 for sure

Kendra M.

Yelp
I literally just purchased 3 wings and French fries. I checked my order before leaving and noticed it was slathered in ketchup, spoke with the owner who also works the counter; was told that's what I ordered. She reluctantly, prepared another order. Ate one half of a wing then noticed it was undone. I pray I don't get sick. I won't be ordering again.
google avatar

Karen T.

Yelp
For the price of this food you'd think it would be a better quality. The fish sandwich fish is horrible, the shrimp in the shrimp and broccoli is very fishy and seems undercooked. Fries and egg rolls a soaking in old cooking oil. They literally over charge for everything. The chicken wings a gray at times. Five years ago this place had standards but now it's garbage. I live in the area and won't dare eat from this place!!!!
google avatar

Alexa C.

Yelp
I don't post reviews but this place always hits the spot! Tight security and cash only but great prices and the food is perfect for what you want in Carryout. A hidden gem on the hill.

Catherine Z.

Yelp
Best Chinese takeout in the area!! Can't recommend the general tso chicken or the lo mein here highly enough. The portions are very generous given the affordable price of the meals (most entree dishes are about $10). Service is also great as orders are ready within 15 minutes after placing it over the phone. They only accept cash but there's an atm right outside to make things easie
google avatar

Catherine S.

Yelp
Hong Kong Carryout is by far the best Chinese food in all of DC. Do not let the sketchy outside, bullet proof glass on the inside, and cash only payment form deter you -- the food is worth it! Huge portion sizes and great take away containers let you make at least two meals out of one main dish or is plenty to share between two people. I always get the sesame chicken, white rice, and steamed pork dumplings (6 large dumplings in one order) and have enough for 2 to 3 meals. Downsides: They do not have a website with a posted menu, so rely on other yelp reviews + photos or grab a carryout menu when you pick up your food. They are cash only so bring your cash! There is an ATM outside of the restaurant but the location isn't ideal and you will have to pay a transaction fee so just remember your cash. The food is worth it though!
google avatar

Sheree P.

Yelp
We decided to try Hong Kong for takeout tonight. We've tried several places in NE and much to our disappointment couldn't find a place that we would visit a second time. We ordered orange chicken, Hunan shrimp, sweet and sour chicken, roast pork fried rice, and vegetable lomein. The food tasted fresh and each dish had its own distinct flavors. The Hunan shrimp sauce had a flavor that we did not really enjoy, but we ended up eating just the shrimp without having it covered with the sauce which made it possible to eat. It wasn't bad, I just don't think the flavor was for us. As other reviewers have pointed out, this restaurant only accepts cash...this is a bit of an inconvenience for those who don't carry cash and who may never see this information prior to their visit. We would consider ordering from here again when wanting takeout in the future.
google avatar

Chris B.

Yelp
Just slightly above OK... even by DC standards. I judge all Chinese deliveries & carry outs by their General Tso' s chicken and fried rice because, if they pay attention to the basic stuff, I'm inclined to believe the rest of the food is going to be good. My meal tasted like run-of-the-mill Chinese food, indistinguishable from most other average Chinese food spots in the city. The fried rice was the biggest basic culprit - super boring. Every now and then a bite of the General's chicken smacked of flavor, but not consistently to earn an additional star in the rating. The broccoli was actually the strongest element of the meal- steamed well with a slight crisp. All-in-all: Not bad food, just not that much better than average. It'll scratch the itch.
google avatar

Yelp
The food here are amazing! Their customer service is excellent as well they treat you with kindness if you treat them the same way , Hong Kong is my go to chinese restaurant they have a variety of dishes for anytype of person for anytype of condition. They only do CASH no CARDS or CHECKS. I highly recommend Hong Kong Carry Out!
google avatar

Katherine R.

Yelp
About as good as you get for Chinese carry out... Great prices, portions, and quality. And like others have said, much better than other more expensive Chinese places on the hill and even in Chinatown. Don't be discourage by the bullet proof glass and shady way the food is passed through the side of the window! I ordered, and highly recommend, the Hunan pork combo... Lots of veggies and large pieces of spicy pork, and not too greasy fried rice and egg roll, all for about $7. I also ordered the lo mein w vegetables which was great, and the cold noodles in sesame sauce (which was essentially lo mein without the soy so you don't need both). It's also worth noting that its cash only.

Maya S.

Yelp
Easily the best general tso chicken with fried rice i've had in dc. my order was ready fast and it was soso good

Erin C.

Yelp
Great takeout spot on Capitol Hill. I ordered the kung po chicken lunch special which came with a side of soup. The food was very tasty & the service was quick!

Helen M.

Yelp
The food does look good but not much taste. Couldn't finish the vege spring roll - inedible. General Tso and sweet and sour sauces were really tasteless. The crab rangoons were a good size but the taste was off. The actual chicken pieces were ok though - none of those weird hard dry pieces or breading with a speck of chicken.
google avatar

Titus Y.

Yelp
We eat here once a week, best Chinese take out place in eastern DC by far. Prices are good, portions are large, and the food is always great. Bring cash, they're cash only.
google avatar

Rachel C.

Yelp
If you're considering coming here or ordering take out, please save yourself and don't. This place is wretched. The sketchy appearance would be fine if the food was good, but the cover is actually a good judge of the book in this case. Not only is the food just barely edible (even by DC standards this is BAD Chinese), but I had almost immediate diarrhea. Food isn't supposed to instantly pass through your person like that. Even in a pinch where this was the only restaurant open I would skip eating or use whatever is in the back of the fridge/those cans you forgot you had in your pantry and are maybe expired over going to this place again.

Anthony D.

Yelp
Their sesame chicken combo was fresh & really tasty. Also, their fried dumplings is impressive. I've tried a dozen Chinese places and this one is probably the best one I've tried so far
google avatar

Jason Y.

Yelp
Late night and need a decent place to order takeout? This place is your go to. We only got the lobster sauce shrimp and pepper steak and those two were solid choices. Lobster sauce shrimp could have a little bit more taste since it's mostly bland except the shrimp. Pepper steak was decent. Better than most Chinese takeout!
google avatar

Dani A.

Yelp
This was my first time at this restaurant/carry out. I ordered something simple. I got orange chicken and shrimp fried rice, but I usually get at my favorite Chinese restaurant in Crystal City. This is why I do not like cash only places. My food is bland, tasteless, and just nasty. I would rather drive to another state (from D.C. To Crystal City) to get good food, than 5 minutes away for bad food. P.S. Did I mention they do not wear gloves or hairnet in the back while preparing your food? Gross!
google avatar

Sue C.

Yelp
Note: cash only and delivery/carry out only. This place is my jam. They deliver in bad weather and are walking distance in nice weather. The prices are more than reasonable and are unheard of in DC when you factor in just how much food they cram into each takeout container. These things are so tight, you could bounce a quarter off of them. I am usually not the biggest fan of Chinese food because so much of it lacks flavor or is super saucy/sticky/sweet but Hong Kong does a great job of packing in fresh veggies to make it healthy and keeping the sweet level to a minimum. They also are usually pretty good about making it spicy if requested. We've ordered here numerous times and it's now to the point that we don't remember if we've ordered certain dishes! Guess we ought to start writing it down. Two of my favorites are the Singapore noodles (with shrimp and pork, comes a bit spicy) and the moo shu pork. The flavor is great and when you run out of the five wraps, you can mix it with the noodles for some extra yums. We typically order three items for a grand total of ~$35 and have enough food for the two of us to have dinner and at least four lunch portions. This is seriously one of the best cheap eats places we've found in DC when you factor in portion sizes. A real gem to have in the neighborhood.

Yelp
Our favorite Chinese takeout! The General Tso chicken and pork Lo Mein are our favorites. The food is always delicious!

Yelp
Hong Kong Carryout is a D.C. jewel and a must visit if you are in the area and in the mood for Chinese food (carryout style). Since I don't live in the area when I'm in DC I always order from Hong Kong and they rarely disappoint. Made a simple order this past weekend, vegetable fried rice, mixed veggies with brown sauce and chicken noodle soup (didn't smell or look to good). However, the vegetable fried rice was so good! Fresh rice with even fresher veggies perfect for vegetarians or vegans. Good food! Sadly they do not accept credit cards or debit cards .. cash only. (kinda old school)
