The mere existence of Hong Kong's Cafe shows some level of versatility for Houston's Chinatown, which is one of 3 establishments in the HK Style cafe category at this time of this review. (#1) It is arguably the most old school of the bunch, with a tinge of diveyness, a variety of classic dishes, and lots of Cantonese spoken throughout the place.
The name in English and Chinese is literal. Cha Chan Tang's (茶餐廳) are specific to the diner cuisine culture in Hong Kong, and I'm pleased that HKC has plenty of it. It might feel a bit cramped, as the space is limited to a handful of tables mostly crammed next to each other. There are specials written in Chinese plastered on the walls occasionally, which is a something one would see back in the motherland.
There is a myriad of noodle soups, baked noodle / rice dishes, fried noodles, and stir fry + curries over rice. I appreciate the egg + luncheon meat sandwiches, HK style toast, and freshly baked egg tarts / pastries. They have BBQ aka siu mei with BBQ pork, crispy pork belly, roast duck, and more. The latter runs out by the afternoon, so it's worth coming in early to score the meat. Their congee has a tendency to be on the watery side, which is quite good when combined with the fried bread sticks (油炸鬼).
Service has been fast and furious almost all the time. During the weekend, it gets packed in here and sometimes waits are going to happen around lunch time. Parking is easy since it's shared with the rest of DiHo Square and it's also cash only. They provide Venmo QR codes for folks who don't have enough bills on hand.
While I've had better HK style cafe food in other cities, I am thankful for their variety and the fact it's an option in Houston. Even for the most casual fan of HK food, it's still a place worth checking out.
