The 14 Best Regional Chinese Dishes to Eat in Houston - Eater Houston

"Of all the Hong Kong-style restaurants in Houston, this one harkens most unapologetically toward its Western colonial roots. There’s fried fish in a creamy corn sauce, hot dogs, and spaghetti Bolognese, but also Chinese barbecue, noodle soups and congee. Luckily, the low prices mean it’s not necessary to stick to just one dish." - Alice Levitt

Only reason you would come here is because you never been to HK or you haven't been to HK in a while, and want to have some traditional HK café food. Premium price for low quality. It's like paying $10 for one cheeseburger from McDonalds. Drinks is flat, French toast is small and $1 extra for a thin layer of fillings, Hot tea is lukewarm. Milk tea most likely made from powder Service is nice, surprisingly, unlike real HK cafe, but they were trying to push additional purchases, which is very annoying.

Google
I’m not from Hong Kong or am used to the traditional Cantonese cuisine but this restaurant was a good representation of what a modern cafe is like in Hong Kong. However it had some freaky dishes like the mango shrimp dish which I could only eat like a half of. However the traditional food they have is good. If you’re not used to traditional Chinese food this restaurant probably isn’t for you but anyone that’s Chinese/from Hong Kong would like it.

Google
Strongly recommend the GuangDong style roasted duck. Presentation is good. The flavor is unbeatable. The portion is big. The roasted pork is also very good. I love the milk teas.

Google
The restaurant is a hidden gem serving authentic Hong Kong style food. Everything we tried was just simply fresh and delicious. The staff were very friendly. Highly recommend.

24 years in business, they must be doing something right! their roast duck was ono! $9.70 breakfast set with a drink? how can u not COME here and have breakfast at least..i did a full review on my youtube channel. very nice folks, reminds me of being back in hong kong cha chaang teng, but cleaner...lol.

Google
Not really hidden, but definitely a gem! Authentic Hong Kong food - recommended for lunch in Chinatown area. Beef stir fried flat noodle (C3) was our favorite and recommended to try! Also the baked pork chop is delicious. However, I almost gave this place 4 instead of 5 stars because it is cash only - and I don’t think it’s appropriate in 2023.

Google
Overpriced mediocre food. Staff were nice though! Shanghai pork ribs noodles - the pork rib were not what you think it would be. It’s pork chops breaded and fried. The noodles were soggy. There was one piece of broccoli in there that were cut in half. This dish has nothing to do with Shanghai…not sure why they even call it that. 1/2 roasted duck - the portion feels more like 1/4 of a duck and there was barely any meat. Mostly were just bones. Was quite greasy as well. Ham and cheese sandwich - this was good but there was literally nothing special about it compared to the one you would make at home for $1. I would not pay $6.5 for this. Overall we left feeling quite underwhelmed and even felt a little nauseous from the food. Likely would not return.

New owner Gavin (young gentlemen) is a super thoughtful person. We had tea time at the restaurant today. When my son accidentally flipped his drink and pour all over on the table, He quickly helped us to change table and replace another drink for free. He also gave us a free dish when the order mixed up. Highly recommended!!!

Yelp
The mere existence of Hong Kong's Cafe shows some level of versatility for Houston's Chinatown, which is one of 3 establishments in the HK Style cafe category at this time of this review. (#1) It is arguably the most old school of the bunch, with a tinge of diveyness, a variety of classic dishes, and lots of Cantonese spoken throughout the place. The name in English and Chinese is literal. Cha Chan Tang's (茶餐廳) are specific to the diner cuisine culture in Hong Kong, and I'm pleased that HKC has plenty of it. It might feel a bit cramped, as the space is limited to a handful of tables mostly crammed next to each other. There are specials written in Chinese plastered on the walls occasionally, which is a something one would see back in the motherland. There is a myriad of noodle soups, baked noodle / rice dishes, fried noodles, and stir fry + curries over rice. I appreciate the egg + luncheon meat sandwiches, HK style toast, and freshly baked egg tarts / pastries. They have BBQ aka siu mei with BBQ pork, crispy pork belly, roast duck, and more. The latter runs out by the afternoon, so it's worth coming in early to score the meat. Their congee has a tendency to be on the watery side, which is quite good when combined with the fried bread sticks (油炸鬼). Service has been fast and furious almost all the time. During the weekend, it gets packed in here and sometimes waits are going to happen around lunch time. Parking is easy since it's shared with the rest of DiHo Square and it's also cash only. They provide Venmo QR codes for folks who don't have enough bills on hand. While I've had better HK style cafe food in other cities, I am thankful for their variety and the fact it's an option in Houston. Even for the most casual fan of HK food, it's still a place worth checking out. ___________ (#1) Which is likely more than most of the entire state of Texas, sans Dallas.

Yelp
This HK establishment has been in Chinatown for over 20 years. And while the prices are more than doubled over this time, it's a main staple of HK food. I still find their HK style milk tea the best in town and their lemon tea is right up there. Service has always been fast and efficient, down to the number of forks, spoons, knives and napkins that your party will need: no more, no less. This place has a very HK feel to it - small, crowded, loud and yet having been a customer since I was still a kid and now with kids of my own, it has a feeling of community and home. Familiar faces of staff and regular customers, it's like you're walking into your regular neighborhood bar. And to top it off, they finally take something other than cash - Zelle!

Yelp
The food here was not good and quite frankly, embarrassing. It was our first time coming here and the owner (possibly) lauded about how people from all over Texas come here to try their food and they have the best roasted bbq meat. The meals do come with a choice of a beverage, most commonly the Hong Kong milk tea. I thought mine was too sweet, so they redid it, so the service is good. It was still a little too sweet but I was okay with it. We got the charsiu, roast duck combo, with the choice of wonton noodles. The meat is actually good but it's not warm at all. I was surprised they didn't at least microwave them or something. Because the meat wasn't warm, it wasn't as good as it could have been. I don't know what it's called in English but we got this sweet and sour rice dish. There is waaay too much sauce on it. Now again, the meat is good but it is covered by the sauce. Rice is too soggy, probably because of the sauce. The food was not very appetizing and I'm disappointed because I thought Houston would have great Chinese food and the owner hyped it up so much. They do not accept cards, but do accept cash and Zelle.

Yelp
Great noodles! I am looking forward to going back and trying some of their other dishes, as I have little doubt that they're all good. Service was quick, and the atmosphere is like that of a coffee shop or small diner. Bring cash! They don't take credit cards.
google avatar

Yelp
Food here is great. Their hk milk tea is pretty good but you kinda smell the soap they use on the cups. Hk style lemon ice tea is great too but no refills.
google avatar

Yelp
Came for breakfast with a friend. I ordered the pork and preserved egg congee with you tiao. Both were quite good, you tiao was a really nice crisp but a tiny bit on the oily side. Congee was delicious, just like how my mom used to make it. Service was fine overall. A little mom and pop shop that serves very authentic Hong Kong food.

Yelp
Not good. The owner said they are very authentic Cantonese foods, but not at all. 一点都不好吃!

Yelp
I know nothing about Hong Kong Style food. Don't quote me on my experience. I have been waiting to dine in at Hong Kong's Cafe for over 3 years. This restaurant was takeout only after restaurant restrictions during later half of Covid pandemic. Prior to that, it was open with limited time and menu. Very hard to match with my schedule. Dining room was opened very recently, as I lost track because it's tucked away at DiHo Square. I came here early this week as I was dodging from the thunderstorm. I wanted some noodles. I have been wanting to try Hong Kong style spaghetti. I tried it in San Francisco Bay Area last year and loved it. So, I ordered Curry Chicken Spaghetti. Oh. My. Gawd. I stared at the dish wondering. I took a photo and a video to share on YouTube. I got so many comments and over 1k views. This is what prompted me to write this review. This is the nastiest food I have ever had. It's consisted of chicken nuggets and french fries dredged in watered-down curry sauce. Spaghetti was over cooked. When I first walked in, waitress asked if I been there before. She would recommend the Peking Duck dish. Because the sign said CASH ONLY, I told her not this time because I had limited funds. After I finished as I walked out, there was a sign say Zelle. Ah, she should had told me earlier. I would had tried the Peking duck. Maybe the experience would be better than what I ordered.

Yelp
One of the rare HK breafast spots in Houston! I loved the ABC Breakfast sets that they serve here; they're both filling and cheap! The food was good and the service was fast - great for a quick meal! The food is very authentic and affordable! I just think taste wise, it isn't as good as other hk cafes I've been to elsewhere (but relative to Houston Chinatown, I think it's a pretty good spot) It also gets pretty crowded in the morning - I was lucky to get a table, but do expect to wait if you go closer to noon!
google avatar

Yelp
I loved the hainese chicken. I visited this place several times whilst in Houston. The service was good as well. The guy that took my order two separate occasions is stoic but answers questions, & offers suggestions. The lady that took my order on a 3rd separate occasions very friendly. Ambiance wasn't really any, it was pretty dull but a sense of family gathering filled the air.

Yelp
BBQ Duck & Hainan Chicken were soooo good! The meat was so moist & tender with just enough flavoring. Hongkong Milk Tea is also a must! This place is cash only though (or Zelle).

Yelp
Very authentic Hong Kong food! Must try pork chop cutlet. They have black pepper and tomato sauce! Hong Kong French toast! Lemon Iced tea! We come here almost once a week for breakfast. Try their breakfast meal too! I feel like I'm in HK when I'm here. Service is fast too.

Yelp
On a whim, my friend and I decided to look for a Hong Kong place for lunch wow visiting Huston. Hong Kong Café popped up as a well reviewed establishment with authentic appearing photos of their dishes. We tried barbecue duck with rice and shrimp wonton soup. The food here brings me back to the streets of Hong Kong where you're splitting a table eating at a cafe 茶餐厅. The milk tea was on point and the wonton had decadent shrimp, the duck!! I've eaten at Kam's roast goose (one of the best in hongkonf). While this is not quite as crispy but it got the essence of roast duck/goose right, and really made me nostalgic to my pre-COVID travels. I really recommend trying their BBQs, if they got the roast duck right, I imagine the other BBQ items must be on par as well!

Sandra S.

Yelp
Food was good, pork was cold but everything else served hot. Duck has a lot of fat and bone, some may like that but it's just not my preference. Service was good and quick. Dining in 1 person was $16 so affordable.
google avatar

Channing W.

Yelp
Tucked in the corner of the plaza but the food and experience here is so amazing. Serving many HK dishes which probably can't be found elsewhere in Houston, the menu has well over 200 items. Opted for a milk tea and a baked pork chop rice. Ambiance is very casual and waitstaff is friendly Cantonese folks. Don't get to go to Chinatown too much during daytime these days so wished they were open later so I could come for dinner. But it's fitting since they are serving cafe and mostly lighter items. Note it is cash-only.

Yelp
This place is my daily go-to choice. Definitely one of the top Chinese restaurants in Houston!!! I didn't realize how much this place meant to me until they closed for a while recently. I literally don't know how I would survive in Houston without them... The roasted duck, ham and egg sandwich, Hai Nam rice, curry chicken spaghetti... Particularly the roasted duck, which I had to eat at least two or three times a week if I were in town. This place was the only hope I had after I moved from LA to Houston one year ago...
google avatar

Lorraine I.

Yelp
Very small restaurant and cash only The food was ok price is reasonable Many customers during the lunch time Afternoon is way better no crowed any more Tons of Guangdong or Hongkong people And the milk tea was a disaster But the satay beef rice was pretty good
google avatar

Gloria T.

Yelp
They have a large extensive menu like a typical HK cafe. Service is great. Food comes out promptly. Quality / taste is not as good as HK. Portions on the smaller side. This plaza gets busy real quick over the weekends and then parking becomes hard.
google avatar

Tin N.

Yelp
i Love the duck and cha siu rice plate. Don't forget to order the Hong Kong ice tea or coffee.
google avatar

Lily L.

Yelp
Came here for dinner an hour before they close, the service was quick but the quality of food we got was little disappointing. My bf and I love bbq duck, and we saw this place might have very tasty duck, so I came here with a higher expectation since this seems like an authentic Hong Kong cafe. Unfortunately, the bbq pork and bbq duck were served lukewarm, and turned cold soon after. I was looking forward to a hot dinner on a cold day but was a kinda sad dinner. I don't know is it because they are closing soon, and we were the only table there so they didn't bother to heat up our food well or something. The meats just lost the flavor when they aren't served fresh and hot, and I also think they lack a little seasoning. The flat noodle was great though, was hot and flavorful, not too oily either. It's called Malaysian style I think, if you ever go I would recommend it. Cafe looked a little outdated but it's a normal traditional vibe inside, welcoming staffs. Maybe we just went at a late time so the food was not so ideal.

Yelp
Great option for HK style cafe food in Houston. The service is fast and attentive. The Cantonese food is some of the best in Houston! While they still don't take credit card, they now take Zelle which is convenient. Some of my favorites here are the HK milk tea, preserved egg and pork congee, and roast duck. The prices have definitely gone up and they are a bit steep for Chinatown, but I can't complain because the food is good and it hits the spot.

Yelp
HK love! I love HK style food (not just because I was born there) but..... It was a cold Thursday around 5 pm and went in to grab food. They have a lot of of items but I ordered their prawn wonton noodle soup (it was chilly after all) and their baked pork chop with spaghetti. These are two staples for me and if you get this wrong, it would be a hard NO. The egg noodles were the ones I love meaning they were chewy and tasty. The wontons were also good. The soup wasn't o erly seasoned which I appreciated. The only weird thing was there was broccoli. Most places use bok choy and a lot of HK places I've been to use lettuce. No worries, I love broccoli so I ate it up. The baked pork chop was so darn tender. They cut it off the bone and packed it in with a lot of spaghetti noodles and some cut up veggies in a tomatoey sauce. (Not like a marinara). This is a common HK style and I haven't had it since I lived in CA years and years ago. They also have a fried pork chop version. I may try that next time. You can get it with rice too but spaghetti is my thing. They take cash and have a Zelle option. No cards. I'm excited about trying more foods like their congee, rice dishes and noodles. The owners were really nice. They speak English and Cantonese. They also have drinks and serve breakfast sandwiches. Definitely going back! Sooner than later.

Yelp
Fantastic restaurant that offers authentic and flavorful Hong Kong dishes. I tried their HK milk tea which is a must! It comes unsweetened and they give you many pouches of sugar to add if you want to sweeten it up! Their HK french toast is also a staple that reminds me of my childhood... the well buttered toast begs for the sweetness of the sweetened condensed milk to be poured on top then quickly devoured. Had to get a BBQ duck to go as well! The only downside is that they didn't have the plum sauce that normally comes with duck. I also tried their egg tarts and they weren't my favorite due to the lack of flavor and dryness of the pastry. I prefer ECK bakery's egg tarts since they are a bit flakier. Friendly PSA that this place is cash only!!
google avatar

Vicky L.

Yelp
If it wasn't for the friendly service and the lady who answered my questions, this would've been no stars. I came to get some rice dumplings and was informed that they were $5.50 each. They are small ..I mean smaller than the typical rice dumpling. I needed them in a hurry so I thought it would do. When my family got home we started to dig in, we were super disappointed. Can you believe that their rice dumplings only had one slither of Chinese sausage, one salted egg yolk, and one piece of pork fat?! Yes.....you heard me right....a piece of FAT! And that is all...nothing more.. OK....you know what, I've been eating traditional HK rice dumplings all my life and never once did I get a small dinky dumpling with only three things inside...for $5.50. Seriously a piece of just fat? Its usually a slightly fatty pork piece but definitely not FAT itself. Alas, I regret purchasing from this restaurant. Totally not worth it. Such a waste of a proper rice dumpling.

Yelp
Update! They tweaked their business hours. Closing a bit early than what normally are. Make a phone call before you come. In doing so, you'll not be surprised. But again and again, their food never disappoints. This place is the most authentic as you can get for Hongkong cuisine cafe-style. The owner always welcoming and nice. Swing by whenever you can to support this mom and pop business.

Yelp
It's been a very long time since I've been back to HK and even in the Bay Area I would day dream of stopping in a HK style cafe with the "ABC breakfast" sets and this place is it. My Cantonese is very rusty as I am ABC myself but I managed to order for myself and my boyfriend. We came in around 11am on a Saturday and it was consistently busy. Lots of people came in to pick up their to go order. "Ho bao Dan" style eggs and spam with toast were just like how it would be in HK. The rice noodles and pickled veggie were superb. Ham and egg sandwich with crust cut off was excellent and so was the egg tart. No cons in my eyes of this little place. Just need to brush up on my canto for easier ordering next time.

Yelp
It has been over a decade since my last trip to Hong Kong's cafe. I used to have breakfast on weekends and lunch on weekdays back when it was the only restaurant serving Cantonese / Hong Kong styled food. My husband hasn't dined in here so we gave it a try. This place is cash only which I dislike as I usually carry less than $10 in my wallet. Lots of other places in Chinatown accept credit cards and I don't know why this place still doesn't want to do that. Tax evasion? Too expensive to set up? I don't know.. Ordered Hainanese chicken rice and baked pork chop. Hainanese chicken rice should come with fragrant rice cooked with chicken broth. The chicken should be poached and meat should be moist. It usually comes with 3 types of sauces. The chicken was flavorless and not moist or dry. I probably have eaten this dish over 100 times from Hainan, China to Singapore and various cities in the US. I never had any peanuts on my dish and thank goodness I'm not allergic to peanuts. But I don't eat peanuts. I only wish the waitress would ask on any food allergies. Those pickled veggies were too sweet. 2/5 stars. Baked porkchop rice took a LONG time like almost 25 minutes when I was almost done with my rice dish. Presentation wasn't that appealing and the sauce were brownish. Should be more like tomato colored. Temperate was hot and pork chop was cooked properly. Taste was ok, good portion on rice but not protein. More cheese on the top would be good. 3/5 stars Both entrees came with a drink as we ordered the combo. HK styled milk tea and lemon tea were what we got. They both had a good amount of ice and too sweet on the lemon tea despite telling the waitress 50% sugar. Oh, the young waitress spoke very limited English and perhaps that was why my tea was too sweet. Lemon tea wasn't one of the choices that came in the combo and waitress never confirmed it. It is included without extra charge. Apparently, there were a few regulars at this place. We were seated by the entrance. There was this young girl who talked very loudly the entire time we were there. She was talking to an older gentleman who literally sat across from her. Unless he's deaf, there's no reason to be talking this loud where everyone in the restaurant even inside the kitchen can hear her. This is extremely rude as her inconsiderate behavior definitely affected other patrons in the restaurant. What's even more appalling was no one who worked in the restaurant reminded her to keep the volume down. I get it, it's a place for folks to eat and chat but no one needs to know the details of your dating life and getting married for green cards etc. We don't care and just want to have a peaceful and enjoyable lunch!

Yelp
Tried their Hong Kong milk tea, to-go. Very good. Would recommend. Very small place so I wouldn't plan of sticking around or going with a large group. But I would come back again to try the snacks cause the tea was THAT good.

Yelp
Delicious authentic flavorful Hong Kong dishes, friendly staff very attentive. It's not regular Chinese dishes, highly recommend this spot if you're looking for real deal Hong Kong food.

Yelp
This place is a gem. It doesn't look like much from the outside and I'll admit it's a little small on the inside as well. But the food is spot on and prefer this asian cafe place over any Chinese place in alameda. They are an asian style cafe very similar to the popular chain "ABC". Service: I'm quite surprised about the service here. They are really friendly and polite. As you know, most asian places the services is mediocre at best. But I love love love the fact they have great service here. It makes the food taste 1000x better! Food: It's you're typical asian cafe food. Baked spaghetti. Chow Mein. Breakfast sets. Wonton Soups. Fried Rice. All the great dishes you love about an asian cafe. They have some pretty bomb milk tea as well. Overall: I would definitely recommend this place.

May Jean C.

Yelp
The food tasted authentic, I tried the peking duck, chicken rice, and charsiu noodles. I especially liked the HK milk tea! Service was good, I ordered them to go and they were quick. The cafe is quaint and although not big in size- it has a homely feel, there were many families having a weekend breakfast together and it was nice to see.

Yelp
Visiting parents in Houston for the Thanksgiving and decided to try Hong Kong Cafe. We were greeted warmly as soon as we walked in, and as soon as we sat down and my dad curiously asked something in Cantonese, the waitress was friendly in introducing everything to us. We ordered a Baked Pork Chop w/ rice, a Black Pepper Pork Chop w/ spaghetti, a HK-style French Toast, an egg tart, a Baked Pork Chop w/ spaghetti, and hot milk-tea. In short, the pork chop is juicy and SO good!!! The portion is big; the price of everything is great! Everything reminded us of Hong Kong, and we all enjoyed the food so much that we ordered additional food to-go to take back with us! Definitely will visit again whenever we are in town!

L W.

Yelp
Staff is adequately friendly but not exactly welcoming. Food taste is OK in general but the quality of ingredients leans more towards that of mid-to-low quality HK cafes. Fried chicken wings are good. Congee, curries, noodles, baked dishes, etc are just okay. Tea is good. Their milk tea and lemon tea are quite authentic.

Raymond M.

Yelp
Good food and fast service, everything is consistent and I always order the usual... friendly service
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
Still the best spot for Hong Kong style cafe food. The Stir-fried Flat Rice Noodle with Beef is top-notched, not too oily. The Chinese-style BBQ Duck and Charsiu are also top tier, fresh and full of flavors. This spot is a Houston treasure, always packed with patrons who miss the food back home.

Yelp
Wow, comfort food at its best! The restaurant is a hole in the wall, but the food is tasty and the price is very affordable. I had the Baked Pork Chop with Spaghetti and I liked it very much. The Egg Tarts have the pastry crust, not the flaky kind. It was very good and so are the HK Milk Tea (iced) and French Toast. Beware that they only accept cash!
google avatar

Yelp
CASH ONLY!! This restaurant is the first opportunity for me to try Hong Kong's cuisine at the US. I unfortunately can't say I am impressed. Also, I'll never get over finding macaroni on a Chinese restaurant's menu even if it is Hong Kong styled cuisine. We had the cabbage with oyster sauce on the side, glass noodles, chicken fried rice, and the milk tea. Had I only tried the milk tea and fried rice, this restaurant would have been a good choice. The milk tea was good - Not super sugary, and tastes like actual tea. The fried rice was amazing too. I'd love to know what they put in the rice to make it so good. Everything else was mediocre though. The opposite of what I expect from Houston's Chinatown. Other than the food, this restaurant is similar to the other places at Chinatown in that parking is scarce around lunchtime, but seating is crowded immediately after they open. Expect to sit close quarters with other Chinese families dining. On the plus side, the bathroom is very clean.
google avatar

Kevin L.

Yelp
Good pricing, hk food quite low seasoned but still msg flavors. I like. Friendly folks, adequate specials and hk offerings with value. Easy parking. Baked pork chop rice, pork could be more tender, rice could be more moist. Russian soup, could be more spicy. 1/4 roast duck and 1/4 yellow chicken, on par. Hk Ice lemon tea could be more tea flavor. But I like the people and I felt at home and comfortable.

Yelp
Sometimes, I just cannot stand the normal American brunch and need some Asian food for breakfast. This place satisfies all my cravings. The taste brings me back home. My favorite item was the fish ball dipped in curry!! Need to come back again and try everything else on the menu hehe
google avatar

Yelp
Fantastic and real HK cuisine, the waitress corrected my pronunciation of certain dishes and I was thankful for that, thank you

Yelp
Delicious hongkong comfort food. I really loved the crispy fish on a bed of rice with red gravy on top, the ginger chicken, the fried rice. First time eating here but the great food and the very nice auntie who served us just made me feel right at home.

Yelp
A nice mix of Cantonese food. Noodle dishes, soups, appetizers, and entrees have all been good and satisfying for our Cantonese-Food-Fix.

Yelp
Y'all. My husband picked up an early dinner from Hong Kong Cafe and I am eating it straight out of the box. It's so good!! We got the BBQ Duck and the stir fried noodles with shrimp. Finally got the real deal as a NY transplant. They are open for take out and happy to feed your bellies. Glad to have supported a local business during this weird time.

Yelp
I love their roast duck, crispy skin and meat is moist and not dried up. Fantastic wonton noodles soup. BBQ pork is perfectly seasoned and roasted. Love the consistency of this place. Fast , clean and polite servers.

Yelp
I had lunch at Hong Kong's Cafe today. it was very depressing. I am not Chinese and I would not recommend this place for anyone who is not Chinese. The waitress was very unpleasant in that I tried to order several different things but she was strangely insistent that I order the roast pork. I have no idea why she cared but finally, after saying I wanted several different things that she clearly did not want me to order I gave up and ordered the pork. I also ordered steamed mustard greens. As I sat there other customers all ordered roast duck, one of the things I wanted to order but that she would not allow me to order. Clearly, this is the place to get moderately priced roast duck that is okay but not special. Before my order came out I asked that she change my order to the mixed plate of roast duck and roast pork. I did get that dish. When the waitress brought the plate of meat with room temperature, not special rice, I reminded her that I was also supposed to get steamed mustard greens. The waitress said they have no steamed vegetables of any kind and they have no mustard to put on my meat. I had not asked for mustard sauce but mustard greens. I repeated that I was not asking for mustard sauce but mustard greens. The other waitress finally brought the mustard greens that were not freshly steamed for me because they were cold. The greens came with a one ounce dish of oyster sauce. The waitress asked if I wanted soy sauce which I did not want. What was missing from my plate were the two sauces that come with the roast port and roast duck on every table occupied by Chinese people. I was the only non-Asian in the restaurant. Clearly other customers got very attentive service that I did not get. I went up to pay the bill. The waitress handed me a bill for twice what the meal was supposed to cost per the menu and the handwritten signs. When I called her out on the overcharging she chuckled and said, "Oh, my mistake". Well of course it was her mistake. How can you call charging double of what the menu says the prices are anything but a mistake of judgment, insulting, and dishonest. I usually don't bother posting about places that depress me but today was really too much. The discrimination against non-Asians that takes place out on Bellaire and has taken place out there since the first places opened out there over forty years ago has always just been something to sort of accept. it was common for dim sum places to make it very difficult for non-Chinese customers get a table and the young women pushing dim sum carts would regularly just push carts past non-Asians. It was standard at the original Kim Son location downtown to give non-Vietnamese customers an Americanized Cantonese menu and if you asked for something from the Vietnamese menu the waiters would say "No, you won't like that". I explained to the owners that it was not for them to decide what I might and might not like. I wrote a review of Kim Son for a very popular weekly paper I wrote for at the time. I included a business card size box at the end of the review with several columns of numbers from the Vietnamese menu and suggested that a very good meal could be had by ordering from the list. At that time Kim Son was doing well with its Vietnamese clientele, particularly on Sundays when there were sometimes be multiple wedding receptions and after my review non-Vietnamese customers started showing up in much greater numbers. At the time there were perhaps five Vietnamese restaurants in Houston. I stopped going to Kim Son as its business grew and wait time for a table became very long. Then they moved into the very large building downtown where it still is and opened places out on Bellaire and got fancy. Good for them. They probably do not even have the Cantonese menu at this point. I do not see Hong Kong Cafe ever getting the kind of business that so many places that started out as mom-and-pop places did so long ago. There are just too many options these days to get outstanding foods from around the world in Houston to patronize some place that has poor service and mediocre food. Sad thing is that when I drove out there I was planning to eat at Hokkaido next door. The waitress at Hong Kong was standing alone staring out the window with no customers at 11:45 am. I decided to try it because they needed business.
