I was impressed by the cleanliness and only wanted something quick before I embarked on my drive up to Santa Monica. The menu is absolutely humongous which is another reason I was a bit skeptical about finding something outstanding. In my experience, most Vietnamese restaurants do one or two things well and they stick to those. When the menu is like a book, most often than not, nothing will stand out one way or another.
I ordered the bun rieu and nem nuong cuon, plus a glass of soda chanh with no sugar. When they brought my soda chanh, not only was it not carbonated, but it was also extremely sweet. I waved for one of the young guys to come over. I told him that I had ordered it with no sugar. After a few minutes getting my message across (or so I thought) he goes away and then comes back again and asks "you want little sugar?" I said "NO, I want NO sugar". He nods and goes away.
Soon after, the lady who brought me my drink the first time comes over and brings me the revised glass. I immediately noticed the sugar on the bottom of the glass, collected in the little 'V" shape at the bottom. I motioned for yet another young guy and thankfully this one spoke English. He informed me that they used lemon powder to make their soda chanh (probably lemonade powder) and if I wanted them to use fresh lemons, they could do that. I said 'If he could, please! otherwise just a glass of water will do".
A few minutes later, the lady again brings me my glass. It looked almost like water and when she put it down in front of me, she said "you try". This time, it just tasted like lemon water. I told her "fine, thank you". *sigh* where was the soda water? So frustrating.
When my bun rieu arrived, it looked watery and there wasn't much crab stuff in it. It was small and meager. They didn't bring out the condiments together with the bun rieu, but brought it with my nem nuong rolls. I ordered bun rieu but they gave me bun rieu oc. I'm not particularly fond of the frozen oc they typically use at these restaurants so I picked them out.
The nem nuong rolls were also meager in the nem nuong. Although they give you 3 rolls, they're just flimsy versions of those from Brodard or Khanh Hoa and the sauce was watery and bland as well.
My meal was edible -- I had wanted to fill my tummy and it did the job. However, I wasn't impressed nor was I satiated. I doubt I'll come back here again.
