Hon’s Wun-Tun House Sunset - Review - Sunset - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Hon’s Wun-Tun House is a noodle soup institution that’s expanded to the Avenues. The Sunset location has the same wonton noodle soups, rice plates, and chow mein as the original Chinatown outposts." - Julia Chen

First time coming here total two adults. Soft opening and was a full house. Service was good and fast. Serviced was very nice and listen to our food allergies. We ordered, pot stickers, Cantonese dumpling and noodles soup, and congee pork and preserved egg and two drinks, HK ice milk tea and ice soy bean drinks. The pot stickers were very good, hit and crispy, dumpling and noodles were also good, and congee is also good. The only thing is that portion is a little small and the noodles were not fully rinsed but still have full flavor. The drinks are a little sweet, so need to request for less sweet. Reasons I gave a 5 stars is the service is great and food was good for soft opening. The price is reasonable and I would come back here for regular open.

A flavorful surprise! The soup was rich and slightly spicy, packed with pickled green beans and tender rice noodles. Comforting yet refreshing at the same time.

I was walking around Irving on Thanksgiving and noticed Hon’s has opened. I decided to have dinner here with a friend. The dining room was pretty full for Thanksgiving evening but I was seated right away at a table for 2. Service was pretty fast as the dining room was amply staffed. We ordered the BBQ pork wonton noodle soup, beef brisket wonton noodle soup, and westlake-soup boiled dumplings. I wanted to get a rice noodle roll but that is only offered between 11 am - 3 pm. The BBQ pork wonton noodle arrived first, followed by the westlake soup boiled dumplings, and then the beef brisket wonton noodle. The soup base has a decent flavor, noodle quality is a bit better than average, BBQ pork quality is average (a bit tougher to chew but pretty lean), wonton is above average. The westlake soup boiled dumplings were disappointing as it did not taste like the beloved Cantonese soup at all. Dumpling skin was good, meat quality was ok, slightly high on the cilantro flavor but adds a good crunch texture, but was definitely missing more flavor. The beef brisket was average. Meat quality was slightly below average as I was expecting more meat versus tendon. Amount of noodle in bowl is good portion-wise.

We live in the neighborhood and was eagerly waiting for their opening. Irving needs a restaurant like this! The soft opening was today! Interior was spacious and beautiful reconstruction. We ordered: beef brisket wonton noodle soup, pan fried dumplings sheng jian bao, and curry beef rice. Drinks were free since it’s soft opening so we got iced lemon tea and hot milk tea. Food was decent but portions are more on the small side. We left hungry still. Drinks were pretty good, sweetness on point. The service was all over the place. I fully understand its first day of soft opening. But it seemed like no one had any training before today and no structure. We waited a long time between the wonton noodles and the rest of the food. About 45 mins in between, and asked several different people to follow up. They were definitely overwhelmed with the amount of people on their first day. Total came out to $60 after tip. I’d give it another try after they work out the service kinks.

Please note that this was during the soft opening. The service was very haphazard as the waiters did not seem to know which table ordered what. The waiters would walk all around trying to figure out where to deliver the dish they were carrying. Also, when we were ordering they said we don’t have that to 3 of the 4 dishes we ordered! The wait time was very long to get our food , other patrons, along with us, were getting upset. We had the potstickers (this dish should have a nice brown crispy side - this one did not. No crispy side and one of the potstickers was not even whole, it looked like it had fallen apart), the chow fun ( good), and the xiao lung bow (good). I was quite dismayed about their soft opening. They did not have many items on the menu and frankly they shot themselves in the foot with a soft opening. Why bother if you are not ready? They ruined their own reputation. (By the way, I was also dismayed that while we were sitting there, in comes a delivery guy with a huge rice cooker being delivered (you did not have a rice cooker and yet you declared a soft opening?.!). A short time later in comes another delivery guy with a load of pots and pans.

First time trying Hon’s. Unfortunately it disappointed me. We ordered the signature wonton noodle soup, scallion pancake, beef chow fun, pan fried Shanghai dumplings and shrimp, pork and chive dumplings. The signature wonton soup had a very off-putting bitter flavor which ruined the entire meal. All the other items weren’t good enough to make it worth our while. Will likely be the last time going

We loved the won ton noodle soup. Texture of the noodles was really good.
