The Jersey City Delivery & Takeout Directory

"Honshu has set menu options, like 18 pieces of sashimi for $25, as well as lunch specials, like one that includes your choice of three different rolls for $16. Those and the rest of the very long menu are available every day for pickup by calling the restaurant at 201-324-2788." - matt tervooren

Honshu Review - Jersey City - New York - The Infatuation

"Just down the street from Domodomo is Honshu, which should be your go-to sushi option for delivery. The rice isn’t great, so stick to sashimi, like the platter that comes with 18 pieces for $25, or the $38 premium version that includes slices of extremely tender toro and king salmon. The big space is a five-minute walk from the Exchange Place PATH station, so keep it in mind for takeout at lunch or on your way home from work." - Matt Tervooren

I've had their omakase course a few times. Cons: the reception lady is always unfriendly. Never says hi. lol The servers aren’t that nice or welcoming either. Omakase size is a mini size. Pros: neighborhood Taste was mid for a neighborhood quality.

Going to Honshu is always a delicious experience. I like to go there for happy hour to get some drinks and sushi rolls. The quality is always consistent, the sushi is always fresh, and the service is great! I highly recommend this restaurant and can’t wait to go back.

Google
So glad we found a great restaurant nearby! We went for Friday lunch for the first time and didn’t expect anything extraordinary, but we were pleasantly surprised. The quality of the food was spot-on, especially considering the price. We really enjoyed it! The tuna sushi, sashimi, and rolls were amazing, and the tempura was also excellent. We’ll definitely be back for dinner and plan to visit more often. Highly recommend!

The sushi is great, usually we don’t enjoy eating sushi but this place changed our perspective. Now i need to take my family to try out again here.

Went on a Tuesday night it was fairly busy around 7:30. I ordered the Montgomery roll and two pieces of octopus. Both were very large and excellent, better than most places as well as the hot sake. I give it all aces! Service made me feel very welcomed. $49

A lovely comfy dinner spot next to the riverfront/Exchange. We went for Saturday dinner, it wasn’t too busy. They had both indoor and outdoor seating. The restaurant has nice decor and ambience. The menu is decent, not overwhelming, bunch of appetizers, sushi rolls and few other entrees. Among appetizers, grilled calamari was good, jumbo scallops, miso soup and eggplant were excellent. The Tokyo roll was amazing, but Godzilla and Montgomery rolls were okay for me. My friend loves their tuna tar tar. The katsu don were nice fulfilling dish as well. Service is good. Food in prepared in a decent time. Sushi rolls are colorful and presented nicely. But for the price, it is not as extravagant as upscale Japanese restaurant.

I've always loved this place and like to order takeout often. In my opinion, Honshu has the freshest sushi in Jersey City. I haven't dined in since 2020 but decided to come in for lunch before work and am so glad I did. The service was kind and attentive, without being intrusive. It was a beautiful day today and I sat outside enjoying the fresh air, quiet seating and the nice jazzy background music. I appreciated Teresa, my server, making my lunch special. Get the iced tea!!! I look forward to coming in for an omakase experience soon. Thank you Honshu!

Came to this restaurant in 2018 as a first date with my now husband and the food quality remains amazing to this day! The waiters are always respectful and patient! Loved the lava cake and clear soup!

Yelp
I'm shocked I've never reviewed Honshu, just came back from their sister restaurant which I have reviewed (5 stars) but want to give them more credit so this is good. Let's simplify. There is no better spot than Honshu in Jersey City and I'd put it against a lot of places in NYC. Spicy Tuna is a simple roll but they do it better than anyone. They procure a good deal of fish fresh from the Japanese market that the famous Jiro (Dreams Of Sushi) procures from, so you know they're serious. Ambiance is very high ceilings, spacious seating arrangement, and overall a fun layout. Service is prompt and always reliable, friendly but not overly in your face. I think they've stepped that up a bit over last few years. I'll give them one piece of advice - Omakase to go, you 1. Have to get tighter boxes where the fish cannot move, absolutely need new boxes of this won't work and 2. Have to require delivery to probably be via car to avoid it shaking around. It's tough to accomplish but one of their competitors has, just with lesser fish. Anyway, it's the best spot in Jersey City and I highly recommend their Omakase at Honshu or sister spot Nigiri. Special place.

Yelp
I've been here several times for lunch and really enjoyed it each time. The restaurant has lots of nice, unique wood fixtures and an upscale ambiance, but the foot isn't terribly expensive. Service is prompt and the sushi is fresh and quite tasty. I've had the lunch special set a couple of times because of the variety of things that come with it. Miso soup, salad, dumplings edamame, sushi, a roll and fruit for dessert. It makes a very nice meal!

Yelp
Good Japanese food in Jersey city exchange place. Chicken katsu don is good but the egg is not runny enough. Grilled calamari is good. Scallops has little flavor. Service is great. Very attentive staff. Nice ambiance inside.

Yelp
The salmon donburi with fish roe that I ordered for takeout was one of the best I've ever had. The fish tasted fresh, the rice was nicely seasoned and proportioned, and the fish roe added a salty taste and texture to the dish. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Enjoyed a lovely experience with fresh fish and delicious sake. Authentic Japanese with delicate flavors. Attentive staff and spacious restaurant.

Yelp
My friends and I ordered takeout from here last night, and it did not disappoint! We ordered a wide variety of their special rolls as well as some basics. My favorites were the Jersey Roll, Toro negi, and the spicy scallop. The ingredients were fresh and packaged perfectly. A great spot for sushi takeout in JC!

Yelp
Food (2/5): Wow perhaps one of the worst sushi places I've had in a while. The rice is mushy and the ingredients did not taste fresh. The shrimp tempura roll had a funky flavor like something was rotten. We got the scallop roll, tuna avocado, salmon, and shrimp tempura. All were not good. Service (3/5): Ok service. They took our order fast and the sushi came out in approximately 10 minutes. They could've been more friendly. Ambiance (4/5): Only good part about this restaurant is the interior looks nice. There are nice decorations, spacious seating and a nice bar area.

Yelp
I can't believe it's taken me this long to eat at Honshu. Came here last night for a date night with my partner and we both really liked it. They have outdoor and indoor dining, though we were told the outdoor dining is only if you want omakase. We opted for indoors, but they were nice enough to seat us next to the open windows. The restaurant is pretty large and were able to seat us immediately (it was around 8p on a Friday) We started out with miso soup (delicious) and beef tataki (also delicious). From there we ordered a few rolls. I *highly* suggest trying the Honshu roll. It basically melts in your mouth, the taste and texture were perfect. It also comes with its own tasty dipping sauce. The other rolls we got were great too - Godzilla roll, Tokyo roll, and one whose name I forget. I want to come back and try their desserts. We were just too full this time around.

Yelp
We love coming to Honshu!! It is a local favorite of ours. The fish is always fresh, service is great and I love the fact that they have outdoor seating when it's nice out. Some favorites are the fashion roll, grilled calamari and the sashimi plate. They have a few options of the sashimi plate, but we've chosen the one with the chefs specials on it.

Yelp
I've been going to Honshu for over 15 years. Still going to Honshu. Enough said. I've gotten taken out I've gotten omakase I've gotten the lunch special I've been to the old location where we had to go up the stairs I've been to the new location that also has outdoor seating I've been to the new Nigiri Always a solid choice in Jersey City

Yelp
This spot has great lunch specials especially since it's near my work and I only go during lunch so that works out I usually aim for sashimi which is what I got today & I loved it all. also starts with a miso soup which is tasty. During weekdays they really get you in and out for those that have to go back to work. Love this spot!

Yelp
Quality/taste: I got the 5 set Temaki and shared the Honshu roll with my friends. Every piece tasted fresh and just melted into my mouth. The set included 1pc yellowtail, 1pc salmon, 1pc tuna, 1pc scallop, 1pc toro tuna belly. It was so good!!! Would definitely get it again. My favorite was the scallop, tuna, toro hand rolls. But honestly they were all really good. Great flavor and they DID NOT skimp on the fish portions!! Service: Good service! Server was really nice and prompt with refilling our waters and bringing out the next piece immediately. Environment: The seating was a little weird at first... The host said we could only get nigiri one of the sections but not the other..?? And the omakase was only in the outer seating area. It was a bit confusing to determine which area to sit at and she didn't really help even though we told her what we were there for. Price: $$ Reasonably priced. It wasn't overpriced like most sushi places around here. Definitely recommend and would come back for sure! I wish I lived closer to go more often!!!

Yelp
Mediocre at best. Food was underwhelming and outdoor seating was tight. wouldn't return.

Yelp
Ordered chirashi through UberEats. It also comes with a side of miso soup. I would say there's a good portion of fish and the fish is fairly fresh. Everything is packaged well too. I'm hoping to check out the restaurant in person next time.

Yelp
Lovely place. Not very large but lovely decor. The tables have relaxing meal. Do not feel rushed. The service was impeccable. The signature tarter is truly work of art and taste. All what we ordered was great. The portions are good sized. A lovely experience.

Yelp
Service was good. Great place but I am biased because this place was where my husband and I had our very first date. Had the Six TeMaki set. It was absolutely delicious! Fish was so amazing & fresh. It included the salmon, yellowtail, lean tuna, scallop, tuna belly, and sweet shrimp. We also ordered an extra sea urchin on the side which was phenomenal! This is the greatest sushi spot in Jersey.

Yelp
I had a nice experience at Honshu and I really enjoyed the rolls that I got. Fashion Roll (7/10) & Dynamite Roll (7/10) I would get again. Nice dimly lit atmosphere and solid sushi.

Yelp
Located near the waterfront in Jersey City, Honshu serves up great sushi- from rolls to their Chirashi bowls, and sashimi. Also on the menu is an Omalase meal that the chef chooses based on their catch of the day. Entrees are good and the menu is massive. They have happy hour specials where rolls are $5-7, oysters are served and apps are $7 ( takoyaki, edamame, etc) I would stay away from their soups like udon and ramen if you are familiar with their specific tastes because they were bland and didn't have that specific flavor. Come here for their hot entrees and def for their sushi. Service is friendly and efficient. Interior is modern and clean, restrooms are clean. There is an indoor and outdoor seating. Outdoor seating is on their porch and it is covered once the weather turns either cold/hot/rainy.

Yelp
My friends reco as his best spot for sushi in JC. He really loves ordering the sashimi which I never had & was a hit! Such a great experience to understand texture, flavors & nuances in fish. Such a kewlll thing. Parking can be difficult in this area. Luckily we were nearby. The restaurant has both indoor & outdoor seating. The view outside is gorgeous & we were lucky to watch a lit up bike parade pass by while dinner. We also split a miso cod. WHOA. It's not fun to split let me just tip you! It's so0o delectable, it melts in your mouth. That miso tang is fantangstic! Such a yummy dish. I'd come back here, is also a great place to either hang with friends or for a date!

Yelp
Got takeout from here and it was pretty good. My boyfriend and I shared the sushi-sashimi combo for two ($65) and a la carte sushi (uni $11 and Spanish mackerel $3). It was definitely enough food for the two of us and I think most people would be full with just the sushi-sashimi combo since it comes with 12 pcs sashimi, 10 pcs sushi and 2 rolls. The portions and quality were excellent, especially since the combo included fatty tuna, white tuna, and yellowtail. I'd definitely order from here again! I just wish they listed the prices online so you can be more aware when ordering.

Yelp
So Fresh! Fantastic menu, diverse options. The food is always on point. Honshu is my go to for sushi. I love to order their lunch sashimi special. Recently sat in and shared the larger sashimi platter and was so delighted!! Everything I've ever tried from them has been thoughtful, beautiful and delicious.
google avatar

Christy S.

Yelp
Came here during their balcony grand opening back in October. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. I had their sashimi appetizer, which was delicious. Each piece of sashimi was really thick. For drinks, I had a yuzu mimosa that was rich in flavor. Then, I had a matcha brûlée for dessert. I usually don't like crème brûlées, but this one was tasty. I would definitely recommend giving these a try if you plan to visit.

Yelp
Honshu is our go to sushi spot when we want something more casual than omakase. We've been ordering takeout from here for years and just ate in for the first time recently. The dining area is spacious and not at all cramped and it was nice to enjoy all of our food fresh from the kitchen! We were there for lunch so we got the lunch specials - maki regular (2 rolls with a choice of miso soup or salad) and maki deluxe (3 rolls with a choice of miso soup or salad). We got a variety of rolls but our favorite for this most recent visit was the spicy tuna roll. For takeout I usually also like to get a sweet potato roll but unfortunately it wasn't part of the list of rolls you could get in the lunch special.
google avatar

Nicholas M.

Yelp
Honshu for lunch is a nice deal. The place is spacious and prices are decent. I came with a coworker for lunch and service was good. They refilled our cups consistently and were very prompt with ordering and getting the check. The lunch special gave miso soup as well. If you are craving sushi, honshu is the place to go.
google avatar

Simran K.

Yelp
Go to sushi spot with work colleagues. Their fish is of great quality, service prompt and interiors welcoming. Some of their finest appetizers that I have tried, of which there are many, are their Salted Edamame (5/5), Blistered Shishito Peppers (4/5), and Tuna Tartare Tower (4/5). Their sushi rolls as well are all beyond impressive. Of the several rolls I've tried my favorites are the Honshu Roll (5/5), Sunrise Roll (5/5), Special K Roll (4.5/5). The other rolls however will not disappoint. The hot tea they serve is also bottomless so they keep the warm refills coming which is an absolute delight. Of the multiple sushi spots I've tried in NYC and NJ, this one has got to be a close winner.
google avatar

Monica L.

Yelp
So, overall okay Had the lunch special Maki deluxe lunch ($23) plus 2 salmon sushi extra, $30 pre tax and tip. For the quality of the lunch i think it is way overpriced. There are plenty of other lunch special places with better quality and less pricey.

Yelp
Finding a place for dinner in Jersey City on a Saturday night at 7pm in an exercise in exasperation. We were going to cross the tunnel and head into NYC, but this place was recommended. It was about 1/3 full, but you could tell that they were doing a lot of pick-up/take out as the sushi bar folks were moving way too briskly for the dine in volume. Omakase for $85/person was quite reasonable, everything was fresh and flavorful, with a side of hamachi kama, some sake and beer altogether about $350 out the door for 3 people. This is our new go-to spot for good quality, last minute sushi/sashimi.

Yelp
We don't usually give bad reviews but this time I can't resist. We own a Japanese restaurant in another state, we understand that a restaurant is not easy to survive at this environment, but We think honesty to our customers is very important. We went here to eat a lunch for our last meal of the trip. We ordered 2 sets of lunch special, one of them was a sushi set supposed to come with 5 premium sushi and tuna rolls, the 2nd set was called the sushi sashimi lunch comes with 5 pieces of sushi, 5 pieces of sashimi, and one tuna roll. we assumed the premium sushi set has different sushi than the regular sushi combo because of the word "premium". Once 2 sets came out the sushi in both sets were the same which we felt like we got scammed by the word "premium". We asked the server what's the different between premium sushi and regular sushi and he said they are the same, then he asked the manager over. The manager was so rude and didn't let us speak by keep saying that's what you get for $20 if you want something different, you can pick the $30+ one. I asked then what's that mean by a premium sushi and we can get 5 more pieces of sashimi by choosing the regular combo since the sushi is the same for regular combo and premium combo. The manager didn't apologize at all about the confusion on the menu. Very bad experience and we can tell the quality of the food is very low too. We still gave them 15% tips for the server's hard work, but the manager/owner definitely needs some training.

Yelp
This place is amazing! The vibe is nice, the service is great & the food is delicious. The miso cod rivals Nobu. I was impressed. The drinks were imaginative and the sushi was super fresh.

Yelp
We came here on a Friday night and the ambiance was really nice. Weirdly, we had 4 different waiters ask us if we were ready to order. It was a bit overkill but at least you can't claim they're not attentive. We got the fashion roll, Honshu roll, and 2 specialty nigiri flown in from Japan (some black fish and a fluke). I honestly could not distinguish between the two nigiri and was a little disappointed to say that they do not put a bit of wasabi between the rice and fish. The rolls themselves were dynamite. The fish was incredibly fresh and the rolls were well balanced with flavor. They also give you eel sauce and spicy mayo on the side. My biggest issue with the rolls and nigiri was that the rice was incredibly sweet. So sweet that it overpowered the flavor of the fish itself. It was especially noticeable in the Honshu roll. I would prefer they tone down the sugar in the rice and this place would be a home run!

Yelp
My go to sushi place. I probably come here 3x a week with my girlfriend. You can't get better/fresher fish! Well priced, quick service, great people and great happy hour!

Arielena Z.

Yelp
I ordered from Uber Eats. But the yellowtail definitely did NOT taste fresh. It was chewy and I felt nauseas when I ate it. This is the third and last time I give this place a chance. I thought they had an off day but it seems like this is the general quality of sushi. Unfortunately I wouldn't recommend the raw sushi from here, maybe their other cooked dishes are better. I've tasted quality yellowtail and it never tastes extremely fishy/old. To leave a more constructive review, it would just be to improve the quality of the fish if you are going to serve it raw. It's easier to mask cheaper fish when cooked but it's harder to mask when it's raw.
google avatar

Daniel R.

Yelp
I got take out and it was quite the meal. Would definitely recommend it to any sushi lover! The Miso Soup was very flavorful and they provided utensils without asking.
google avatar

Yelp
Sushi is great. Vegan options! Outdoor seating for larger groups. The service staff is on point.

Yelp
The service at Honshu is usually great. But today I was at the bar and they were pretty slow, I literally waited for 15 minutes to have a waiter attend to me. And the waiter was pretty rude!

Yelp
The Man - The Myth - The Legend - Professional and knowledgeable Itamae ( Japanese Chef ) Fairly priced - Fresh Sushi - Omakase - Jersey City. Location to Quality is Top Tier.

Yelp
I have always been the BIGGEST fan of Honshu and just to put the icing on the cake Honshu has now opened a new section of the restaurant, Nigiri By Honshu. It is Jersey City's first Japanese Inspired Hand Roll omakase bar. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Chef Jason for the soft opening last night and my friends and I were blown away. You really DO NOT have to go to New York City to get New York City quality omakase. This is the best, if not better. This is some of the freshest fish you could possibly have, along with the most beautiful presentation and incredible service. Never once was my sake empty, never once was a plate not cleared and replaced. Chef Jason described every fish and accoutrements and truly takes such pride in his work. He is a master at what he does. He is also just an AWESOME person all around and always makes us feel like we are sitting down at home with our own personal omakase chef. The newest addition to Honshu Lounge is also beautiful. The omakase bar is made from the most gorgeous Japanese wood, its sleek and spotless and there are awesome new tables and spots to lounge. Make sure to check out Nigiri By Honshu, there is a 0% chance you will be disappointed! Thank you again Chef Jason for a great night!!

Yelp
I don't normally post reviews on yelp but I feel like this one needed to be posted. This has been one of my favorite spots for sushi for years. I work in the area and my colleagues and I have been loyal to Honshu for as long as I can remember. The food here is amazing, the drinks are spot on, and the sushi/sashimi is extremely fresh and delicious! Everytime in the past, I've gone with one or two other colleagues so typically we will split the bill and never look back at it because we're trusting that they're splitting it correctly. Today I went with 4 other colleagues, and to keep it simple, I decided to just pay with my credit card and my colleagues can pay me back later. When I was calculating everyone's share after getting back to work, I noticed that tax should be 6.625% which is what it says on the bill as well but they charged like 6.629%. I said ok, no biggie few cents here and there. Then I noticed they charged me tax TWICE. Once on the subtotal, and then once AGAIN on the overall total after I paid. To top it off, when you're selecting the tip, BE CAREFUL. You think you're paying 18% but you're actually paying like 20.5%. So what I'm trying to say is their numbers that are calculated for tip are wrong and much over the actual percentage that you think you're paying. I would probably manually calculate the tip and add a custom amount. Don't get me wrong, I'm not cheap by any means and I never mind over-tipping or overpaying for good service, but that should be my choice. I ended up having to go back there after work to let them know that they overcharged me the tax AND tip, thankfully they didn't give me a hard time, nor were they rude. They voided my original payment and let me pay again. This time thankfully since I calculated the exact tip amount in advance, I was able to add a custom tip rather than selecting from their options. They didn't apologize even once or look like they felt bad for their mistake. Nor did they explain what went wrong. They just spoke to each other in their language and gave me a new bill. As great as the food is, what they did is really shady and they're probably overcharging all their customers without anyone knowing. I would say definitely go for the food, but really look out for if they're overcharging you.

Yelp
this review is for takeout only (doordash). i saw a lot of good reviews for honshu on yelp/google reviews and was craving ordering sushi for lunch, so i ordered honshu off of doordash. i got the maki deluxe set which comes with 3 handrolls. it came very quickly through doordash and was packed well, in a cute little honshu-branded paper bag! their lunch special is available monday to friday from 11:30am to 2:30pm. the maki deluxe set ($22) comes with a choice of soup or salad, to which i got the salad which was good, pretty average. i was most excited for the sushi tbh since everybody seemed to be raving about the fish-to-rice ratio, but i thought it was also just average. i got (1) salmon avocado roll, (2) tuna avocado roll, (3) yellowtail scallion roll. my favorite of the three was the yellowtail scallion roll, you could tell how fresh the yellowtail was with how buttery it was. however i felt a little bit juped off of the tuna sizes in the tuna avocado roll - some sushi pieces were larger than others for some reason? and some bites tasted really only like avocado. it felt a bit inconsistent. $22 for 3 rolls of this caliber is a bit hefty for me, other spots have cheaper lunch specials for what i would say is similar quality sushi.

Yelp
It's a bit loud on a Saturday night, but that's to be expected in this area. Food was very good and fresh. The waiter was great, attentive and full of knowledge about the menu and offerings. We will dine again.
google avatar

Natty C.

Yelp
I was pleasantly surprised by how good this spot was. It's no frills but the sushi is really good! I came on a Saturday night and was seated right away. They also have a full bar and lots of choices for cocktails and sake. It looked like there were some good specials for happy hour.

Yelp
Come hungry, and leave happy! Outdoor and indoor dining, with a courteous staff. This Japanese restaurant has a lot to offer with its wide variety menu. It will make you hungry enough to buy numerous meals. You are getting quality and freshness here. Happy hour pricing on food and alcohol. I had an issue with the service. Not sure if they were understaffed, but the food took longer to come to the table than normal times. FYI: The hours of operation are not the usual 11a-11p, so look up the times before you go.

Jos T.

Yelp
The food the service and ambiance was just so wonderful. I was so impressed by the outside decor and the service was so exceptional. Our waitress name was Emma and she was so sweet and accommodating, always checking on us. Me and my cousin haven't had dinner in awhile so we were catching up and she never rushed us. And when we wanted another glass of wine we asked if we could change our seats close to the fire heater and she was more than happy to make it happen. Will highly recommend this restaurant! Will definitely be coming back.

Yelp
Just ordered lunch via Uber Eats. Okinawa is closed today and I really wanted a spicy scallop roll so I chose Honshu because I've had their sushi before and it was good, and not every place has a spicy scallop roll. My salmon avocado and tuna rolls were good. The spicy scallop roll was literally all mantle skirts and gills and no actual scallop meat. I've literally never seen this before. Very gross, chewy texture that did not taste like scallop. Super disappointed.

Yelp
My husband and I live right down the street from Honshu and ordered takeout from here a few years ago. After a less than thrilling experience, we finally decided to give them a second shot for dine-in, and are definitely glad we did. We ordered the Beef Negimaki to start, which was delicious, although it was unexpectedly piping hot when we first received it. We then split four sushi rolls, which were fabulous - very fresh fish, great flavor combinations, and overall good quality ingredients. We didn't love the Spicy Scallop Roll and ours looked different than in previous reviews on Yelp, but I could see why others would like it. Prices are average for the area - a draft beer each, appetizer, and 3 regular rolls plus one specialty one was around $67 before tip. Now that I've had a better second experience at Honshu, I would definitely return.

Yelp
This place was a really nice Japanese restaurant. The food was great, priced well, variety on menu was plentiful, food came out in timely matter while atmosphere was amazing. The staff was also very friendly

Yelp
Stopped by for lunch at this sushi restaurant. We sat inside but they do have outdoor seating as well. I ordered the lunch special which is offered Monday to Friday 11:30 to 2:30 and comes with a soup or salad. I had the Maki Delux $20 with three rolls from the list. I had Tuna avocado, Spicy tuna and Shrimp tempura. The Shrimp tempura was definitely the best. The other two rolls were nothing special.
