Armie Hammer and Elizabeth Chambers Are Opening Bird Bakery in Denver | Eater Denver

"Referred to as a local Denver restaurant the couple visits when they come into town to see family, implying it’s a familiar neighborhood spot they frequent during visits." - Josie Sexton

Opinion: Food is a fluid concept - SilverKris

"A pop-up kitchen run by the author and her husband (a northern Italian chef) that spotlights Singaporean Chinese dishes while deliberately adapting to wherever it cooks. The concept leans into fusion by referencing local ingredients and techniques — for example, using salted trout as a stand-in for salt fish in fried rice or emulsifying a salted-egg sauce in the style of a béarnaise when the kitchen setup differs. The project aims to convey the deceptive complexity of Singaporean cuisine — its reliance on layered aromatics and rempah-like pastes that deepen and caramelise — and to share the couple’s love of those flavours with both the city and an international audience." - Xiangyun Lim

I’ve been dining at Hoong’s Palace for over 15 years, and it has long been my go‑to spot for Chinese cuisine thanks to its consistently exceptional food. Unfortunately, since COVID, prices have risen by about 25% while quality has not kept pace. On my recent visit, we ordered the Mongolian Triple and Triple Basil, but the beef was disappointing—chewy and lacking the tenderness I’ve come to expect. What was once a solid 5‑star experience now feels closer to 4 stars. I truly hope the restaurant restores the quality that made it such a standout for so many years.

Google
This will be my new favorite casual dine in spot! 10/10 fresh and delicious food, amazing and friendly service, and not loud atmosphere. I definitely recommend their chicken with eggplant entree and trio/combo in garlic sauce entree. Amazing prices for a very fresh food and big sized portion!

The General Tao’s/Thao’s/Tso’s chicken was quite good here. Unlike most other places, it wasn’t dry. It also made for really good leftovers. My bf liked his meal also, it had crispy noodles that crunched in a satisfying way.

My family has been coming here for many years. The food and service have always been good. Recently we came for lunch and the service was absolutely unacceptable. Our order was taken promptly and the food came quickly. However, at the end of our meal our server disappeared. She did not come back to pick up the bill or bring us boxes for our leftovers. We asked someone else to help us and they spoke to our server . When she came back she was very annoyed with us. It turns out that our server decided to chat up another table for 20 minutes! She was clearly trying to avoid working. I have never experienced this at a restaurant. Perhaps better training for staff is needed. We will not be returning to this restaurant any time soon! If you dine here I recommend bringing your own Tupperware !

We brought our son for his birthday because he chose it. Hoong's did not disappoint. All of our dinners were moist, delicious, and plentiful.

I asked for a coke refill and the waitress handed me a half-filled glass. She was a little hesitant to do a refill and i had to ask for it twice. We keep coming back here because the food is delicious and I think it was just random occurrence because the customer on the next table got a full glass of soda for a refill.

The food is always great, I love the open kitchen so you can see all the food being prepared.... I also get jealous of seeing what I didn't order though. Scallion pancakes are a must here, so flaky and delicious with a sauce you could literally spoon over anything. Our visit tonight was for Lunar New Year and I've never seen this place so busy. I don't think there was an open spot in the house so I'm very happy they had a great turn out.

Google
We are from our of town andhad a family dinner there looking forward good Chinese food. Unfortunately, our experience was poor all around beginning with service. The waitress was abrasive and dismissed any request, even refusing to accommodate chicken and rice for our grandchildren. The scallops in the 30 dollar scallop dish were rubbery and the sesame beef was sweet. The waitress was indifferent. To finish it off, my husband left his vest there, and when he went back to collect the next day, he was met again with a brisk "its not here" with little effort to look for it. Definitely will mot be recommending to anyone.

Yelp
Thursday late afternoon or early evening, got seated right away. Got the water and the order taken right away. Our server was on top of everything. Not as busy as last time. Even the sister smiled at us as we were leaving. First time ever! Got the cucumber salad and it was as good as 1st time. Little spicy, crunchy and full of flavor. Triple delight with garlic sauce was also delicious. If you want it spicy, gotta ask. The sesame chicken which is our favorite and also most popular was on point. Too much food and had some to take home. Hoong's, you rock!

Yelp
Me and The Hubs had dinner here mid-week last week for 'date night'. Overall, it was a very positive experience. The food is American-Chinese style, but done very well - no overly sweet or gloppy sauces, and not salty or oily (at least not what we ordered). They have a very large menu that covers all the usual bases (beef, chicken, pork, seafood, duck, noodles, vegetables, soups, etc.). Anyway, we ordered War Wonton Soup (for two), Chinese Broccoli with Oyster Sauce, House Chow Fun, Shrimp in Ginger and Scallion Sauce, and Beef with Baby Bok Choy. Everything was super tasty and well presented. Sauces were light and flavorful. And, yes, we had leftovers to bring home for another dinner! Most entrees are priced around $20, but the portions are substantial! I like leftovers. This was our first visit, but I can guarantee that we'll be back soon!

Yelp
Such a great meal dining in or picking up. The pick up orders online are very easy to do and flawless when it comes to pick up. Everything is timely, fresh, and tastes great. The lunch menu dine in is amazing and such good quality and quantity for the cost. Our favorite Chinese restaurant so we will always commute for their menu. Some family favorites are the sesame chicken and general Tao. There's something for everyone on the menu!

Yelp
This is our to go place for Chines food! I would recommend them! The ambiance is really nice plus the service unlike to other Chinese restaurants - they are wayyy better!

Yelp
Lunch portions were excellent, enough for a second meal to bring home. You select a main dish which comes with rice, a crab rangoon, a eggroll, egg drop soup and a drink. Price matches what you get and I was really happy with the beef and bell pepper. Plenty of seats inside and plenty of parking if you are going with a group. Staff is friendly and helpful as well.

Yelp
After having a nice experience and being introduced by some friends to this restaurant, we decided to venture here again. It was tasty and nice, just like last time. The staff was friendly and attentive and overall, the restaurant was pretty busy, a good sign for sure. One thing I really like about the place is the quantity of food. Each dish has a great quantity on each plate and it feels like a good value. We ordered the crab cheese wontons, which were creamy and filled well, orange chicken, which was one of the better orange chickens I've eaten, my least favorite dish the chow mein, which I would not order again, and a mixed garlic chicken and shrimp dish, which was pretty tasty. Our company ordered the sesame tofu which was surprisingly tasty as well! We did order a showy volcano alcoholic drink. Not very strong and mostly for show. Wasn't actually the best drink and we likely wouldn't order it again. All in all, it was another nice visit with great portion sizes and tasty food. We will be back again to try some more food!

Yelp
I wish they were there when I worked across the street! We love this place. Don't let the observation of it not being packed fool you. It's a massive menu. The flavors are bold but not overpowering. Everything we've had is excellent. It's a traditional Asian restaurant, so expect them to not speak English as clearly. They are professional and kind. We have no negatives. She go enjoy!!!
google avatar

Alexanria J.

Yelp
Very spacious, beautiful, high-end traditional Chinese restaurant vibe. Service was alright. We liked the lunch combination.

Yelp
although it was insanely busy when we went, and it appeared that our server was the only server and food runner, the food was great. he had the king pao triple delight and we loved it. the fried rice was great. the crab cheese wontons were so warm & melt-in-yer-mouth deelishusss! i could have eaten just those for appetizers, dinner, & dessert & worn them to bed like a cozy set of pajamas. i had the orange chicken. it was good, but not packed-with-flavor and dance-on-yer-tastebuds-kung-pao-chicken-yummy. the ambience was great. clean, low lights, not really loud for as busy as they were. the loo could use some love, for sure. it's a bit dated and run down. the only negative was the wait for the food and the check bc they were understaffed. overall, we will certainly be back & highly recommend that you go!

Yelp
Hope the food is good this time, we called for hot mustard and the guy on the phone was so rude! We used to love this place!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Good food but best for lunch. Dinner is somewhat expensive whereas lunch items are more reasonable.

David V.

Yelp
We went for a three generation family dinner on Thanksgiving eve. Terrible experience. Rude service - they wouldn't even accommodate a simple request for the children. The $30 scallops were dry and tough and the $25 sesame beef was fatty and over-breaded. To top it off, I accidently left my nice, new Columbia vest on the back of the chair and when I went to retrieve as soon as they next opened, they claimed they did not have it.

Celeste N.

Yelp
We won't be going back to Hoong's Palace. The service was very slow, and the server never checked back to see if we needed anything. I had to look around the restaurant for her. We ordered apps, Chicken lettuce wraps, 8 fried shrimp and red bean steamed buns. The steamed buns tasted good. They were served first and took 20 minutes to arrive. Then the very dry chicken for the lettuce wraps arrived. The sauces were skimpy. Hardly and peanuts on the dish and not flavorful. The shrimp looked like I could have baked frozen flat shrimp at home. Uninspiring food. Poor service. The kitchen exhaust fan was so loud we asked to move away across the restaurant right away.

Yelp
Hoong's Palace was jam-packed on Christmas night. The restaurant has been in South Denver for a while and has quite a league of dedicated customers. Although the taste is more American Chinese, but very delicious nonetheless. Certainly one of the better American Chinese restaurants in town. Here are their beef chow fun, shrimp with walnuts, kung pao triple, squid with black bean sauce, eggplant with garlic sauce, salt & pepper pork and steamed bun with red bean paste.

Yelp
I ordered from here for lunch one day - maybe it's a different experience for delivery vs eating in but I was disappointed. Dumplings were average - the sauce was very good! I would say that for the price of the dumplings, these were good. Just a heads up that their egg drop soup has tofu - that threw me for a loop. The egg drop soup also wasn't very flavorful, probably needed some salt/pepper but appreciate how it was up to the person eating on how much they wanted to add. I also ordered the sesame chicken, which was delicious, but a little expensive. I can't comment on the service or ambiance, as I ordered delivery.

Jeannette H.

Yelp
Hoong's Palace is THE best Chinese restaurant ever!!! The service is excellent and the food is to die for. The meal came HOT to me. Even the fried rice was hot!!! The restaurant was pretty full with other people and they too seemed happy with their meals. Our waitress kept coming to check on us and kept filling our glasses of water. I definitely will be returning to this restaurant!! It's a nice restaurant and not noisy at all. Plus it's easy to find.

Yelp
Dropped in for a late Sunday lunch and were immediately seated. Ordered the lunch special that included soup, wonton, egg roll and entree. The hot and sour soup was very good, and the flavor of the wonton was impressive. I am happy to report that this dish was the best Sesame Chicken I have eaten in years. It takes a careful balance of preparation to get the crispy outside and tender inside on the chicken, but the real hero for me was the flavors in the sauce!

Dea A.

Yelp
This used to be a nice Chinese restaurant, and even though the food is decent we won't ever go back! First they failed a health inspection for bugs in the kitchen, now their liquor license is suspended for unknown reasons, and their bathrooms are filthy. The staff is extremely rude!!!! We were seated the same time as two 5-tops of Chinese people, and the staff fell all over themselves serving them, and ignored the non-Chinese customers. We were there for two and a half hours for dinner for four. We had to ask repeatedly for things we ordered and water refills. One appetizer was served after the entrees, and the entrees were served one at a time. At the end of the meal, the staff packaged and bagged the Chinese customers leftovers, but not the other customers. Never again!!!
google avatar

Peter M.

Yelp
This is the some of the best Chinese food I have ever had. I had the Sesame Chicken and Crab Wontons. The food was all cooked fresh, and very savory. The Sesame chicken was made with white meat, which is rare for a Chinese restaurant and led an extremely tender and delicious entree, with no gristle or chewiness. The portioning was massive - I took enough home for another meal. We got our food and appetizers quickly, but showed up around 5PM so this may be because we beat the rush. I have seen other customers complaining on here about the service. We had a young man who clearly didn't speak much English but was very polite and careful with our food and dishes. The atmosphere was dimly lit (which I like) and very relaxing. There is a big open window to the kitchen and you can see, hear and smell your food being cooked. The servers were extremely polite and kept our water filled. I will definitely be coming back here when I'm in the area next!

Yelp
I'm visiting from California and this was where I went for my company team lunch. I have to tell you, I have been disappointed with most of the food I've had over here so far but Hoong's really hit it for me. Lunch portions were huge and included a soup, entree, side of rice, cream cheese rangoon, and an eggroll--all for an average of $16-18! I got the Mongolian Triple (beef, chicken, and shrimp) and I just finished my leftovers. Even as I'm writing this, I want more!
google avatar

Camilla H.

Yelp
Thursday evening ... around 8:30 ... plenty of seats. Not a 5 rating as the waiter was quite lack luster. But the food was pretty decent. Hubs had the Szechuan chicken and it came out fresh with a good amount of spice. I had the spring rolls to start ... came out hot n tasty. For dinner I had the chicken lo mein ... I had to search for the chicken but the flavor was good. I know most places have gone to the low sodium soy sauce but usually have regular avail ... not here. Our food arrived quickly ...

Natalie G.

Yelp
Be careful about your visit, you'll be called cheap and told to order to go if you can't give a minimum of 18% for tip... These workers get angry if you don't provide them their salary since the owner can't to begin with ‍
google avatar

Tina A.

Yelp
here are the picture of the cockroach found in our rice, Sunday, July 7,2024. I wouldn't rate 1 star as there is no option for negative stars.
google avatar

June R.

Yelp
Can't wait to get back in town to go to my favorite Chinese restaurant. Been a year and have really missed it. Food has always been good and always enough to take home for another meal.
google avatar

Doug D.

Yelp
The quality of their food has dropped off significantly in the past couple of years. This used to be 5 stars, now only 2. I gave it one more chance today and the food was bland. I wonder what happened to a once great restaurant.
google avatar

Gloria M.

Yelp
Hoong's has been around for years! My family and I have been coming here since I was a child. The prices have changed over the years to meet inflation but the quality has not. I recommend the Mongolian beef, tofu hot pot and of course the sesame chicken. I've done both take out and done in-- I realized that take out the food is not the same on taste compared to dine in (isisnt this common?) overall it's good consistent Chinese food
google avatar

David L.

Yelp
I was very impressed with Hoong's. I had driven past it many times but never thought to eat here but this is legit Chinese food. I love family style restaurants and it was nice to see one still active during pandemic times. We ordered lots of food. But everything we got was made to perfection. If you're looking for good shrimp, they don't give you the baby shrimp, their shrimp are almost prawn size. HUGE! The honey walnut shrimp was amazing. Their seafood noodle dishes are absolutely amazing and I had some mushu that was packed full of flavor. I really appreciated that they had American Chinese and authentic Chinese food (take that however you interpret it). The waiting staff had some humor too. I had wanted the short ribs but they were out so I had chosen my back up and our waitress said oh you don't want that. Usually only American people (sorry white people) like that. So I opted for my third choice the mushu. We all had a good time and everything came out hot and fresh. We hope you continue to thrive Hoong's Palace.
google avatar

Larry S.

Yelp
The food is very good. Fried rice 5 stars Beef with oyster 4 stars Sesame chicken 5 stars Chicken black bean 5 stars Beef green pepper 5 stars Egg rolls 3 stars. Egg drop soup 5 stars Chow fun 4 stars Service 4 stars Most of the dishes are excellent fresh and hot. I highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Ashley C.

Yelp
The service was amazing. All our food came out fast and no orders were mixed up. The food was okay. The best we had was the Mongolian beef. The sweet and sour soup was kinda bland. The rest of the food we got included the honey walnut shrimp, sweet and sour pork, spicy ginger chicken, mar po tofu, and garlic book choy. The Tofu and garlic bok choy were good but everything else was pretty unremarkable. Solid food and service but not anything to write home about.
google avatar

Mac G.

Yelp
Food requests for no msg due to allergy not honored . Had reaction even though I made it clear , severe reaction when I ordered. Started to have chest tighten, and trip to ladies caused me to throw up everything I had consumed. Last trip there if a simple request can not be met.
google avatar

Steven S.

Yelp
I have eaten here for two years. The "beef chow fun" is excellent, make sure to order it dry-style. The service is ok, the food takes a while but well worth the wait. The potstickers were freshly made. I bring my own hot sauce as it's hotter, and tastier than theirs. Honey walnut prawns are excellent. This palace serves the best chow fun I tasted in Denver.
google avatar

Jesse B.

Yelp
It pains to write a 2 star review. Some restaurants just need improvement. It had been years since I had great memories of 5 star dining at Hoong's Palace. I came late on an afternoon and asked if I could order a lunch special. The employee said they were starting dinner at 3:30pm and had attitude to begin with. I was able to order lunch and also ordered 6 won tons and tipped 20% on top. When I asked if there was soy sauce in the bag upon order being ready another employee said yes without checking. No soy sauce unfortunately and no to go utensils or napkins provided. In COVID times most restaurants have been going above and beyond. The 2 stars comes from mediocre food (way too sweet sesame chicken) and terrible service for a carryout order. Too many other choices to support Hoongs.
google avatar

René N.

Yelp
Great food Excellent lunch prices Lunch combinations includes main dish, rice, soup, eggroll, crab rangoon, all for around $12.99. Lunch combinations offered on the weekends as well. Service is great. Good atmosphere. Good location, just 5 minutes off of I25 and Arapahoe. Full bar.

Trinity W.

Yelp
The fried rice never disappoints & the chicken always hits the spot !! I'm excited to try more dishes on the menu
google avatar

Tasha J.

Yelp
I could not be fuller after eating lunch at Hoong's Palace! The lunch special was an amazing treat during the week day that almost put me in a food coma. They gave wonton chips to start, the choice of soup and with your entree comes rice, egg roll and a crab Rangoon. I can't wait for another lunch at Hoong's!

Fred B.

Yelp
Hoong's need to step it up! Service slow for Sunday lunch waited about 10 min from when first person's meal was delivered to the last. Also not good when you see a mouse running around in the dining room!!

Don V.

Yelp
I ate here today food was good the mouse running around my table wasn't great. I'm sure it happens at most restaurants but this was a baby mouse at lunch peak.

T K.

Yelp
Ordered food for delivery. Son had the orange chicken (he was the only one who ate any of the orange chicken) and suffered food poisoning, up sick the entire night.

Diane G.

Yelp
This place used to be fantastic for decades but in the last few years, the service is very slow. It took almost 10 minutes just to get water. It could be they are always short staffed, I don't know. The food is usually good, but not always- it has become more spicy and too much oil. They no longer give out fortune cookies and prices keep going up, however according to todays prices I guess they are in line with normal.
google avatar

Jan P.

Yelp
We had a very unpleasant experience last night. Starting with Wonton Soup which was totally lacking in taste. The hot and sour soup that Jeff had was also not up to par. The service was slow but the worst part was the restaurant was dirty - We sat in the bar and the light over the table was filthy - Jeff said the men's restroom was gross (he rarely complains) The hostess then proceeded to seat a family of 12 with 3 crying children under the age of 4 in the bar. We will not be returning...I should have taken photos but I didn't -
google avatar

Everett S.

Yelp
So sad how this place went from mediocre to complete garbage!!!! The food is rubbery, flavorless & even worse, their customer service makes the food look good Ordered potstickers, cashew chicken & orange chicken, adding (and paying for) extra vegetables... the picture will tell you they stole my money, extra veggies for a $4 surcharge?! No flavor, my 6yr old said it tasted like a "gross soggy burrito" ‍ I called them before writing this, and they said "we don't speak English" then hung up on my ...... How to you at Oxymoron in Chinese????!!

Irene L.

Yelp
Hot and sour soup was delicious (and I'm super picky about my hot and sour). We were here for lunch and got beef lo mein, salt and pepper pork loin, and hunan beef. All of the food was beautifully seasoned and the meat very tender.
google avatar

Jill A.

Yelp
Their chicken garlic dishes are so good! Found the beef a bit chewy so just don't order that from here. Wonton soup is so good. So is the chow fun and my kids love their Lo mein. Vegetables taste fresh and crunchy. Last several times I've eaten here, service was good (not great). Ambiance is nice as well. This is my go to for local Chinese food.
google avatar

Jayme M.

Yelp
My husband loves this place, but I'm not overly impressed. The food is hit or miss. Some days it's really good some days it's cold. One thing that is consistent is the service is always horrible. The waitress is not friendly whatsoever. She's incredibly rude actually and could careless about getting anything out to you on time or doing what you ask. If the food was consistent and the service was better it would be a great Chinese restaurant. Another random thing is their furniture needs to be updated. The last booth I sat in I kept sliding down it because the booth was broken and no longer even.
google avatar

Casey P.

Yelp
We love this place! We started coming here in 2003ish. We don't live in Colorado anymore but we come when we're in town for visits. It's still great! We miss this place!
google avatar

Catherine K.

Yelp
Ordered dinner for a take out date night. While the food was good, it definitely wasn't $22/meal/person good. The food tasted like standard Chinese and didn't wow me in any way to think that I should be paying that much. I ordered the Chicken and Snow peas (came with a side of white rice) and my boyfriend ordered the Chicken Lo Mein. We got a thing of regular dumplings and enjoyed the sauce for that. I just wasn't that impressed

Peyton Y.

Yelp
I would give them ZERO Stars if could. I was visiting from out of town with family and they took us to this restaurant for dinner. The food is not good. One of the entrees we ordered was General Tao Chicken; it was not what we expected. It was flat pieces of white meat with a brown sticky sauce. They house fried rice was nothing special and the Salt and Pepper Shrimp had more batter on it then salt and pepper. But what really ended the meal and experience terribly was that we had a table for four; but had an uninvited guess to arrive; which was a cock roach. We bought it to the hostess attention and either she didn't speak English or she didn't care. So we requested the manager. In the beginning the only thing she would do was apologize and offer a $20 gift card; that was useless since we are from out of state. She also stated that they just had the pest control company service the restaurant. It wasn't until I start taking pictures of their licenses that she gave us a favorable discount on the bill we already paid. I will not return and neither will my family that live in Aurora. They said the restaurant use to be better and has changed and gone down.

Yelp
Kind of bothers me that Hoongs only has 3.5 stars... I have been going to Hoongs for probably 15 years now and I'm OBSESSED. The food is always good, good service, and easy parking. Right now during Covid I did takeout instead of dine in; however they are supporting dine in if you wish. Must orders: wonton soup, crab cheese wontons, sesame chicken, chicken with cashews, and Mongolian triple. Just order all the above for your table and share- you'll thank me later!
