Maine Now Has a Restaurant Inspired by Yetis From Zelda | Eater Boston

"A Durham burger-focused shop that butchers and grinds its own meats, makes in-house sodas, and offers a broad menu of beef, chicken, pork, and veggie burgers plus inventive sides like chicken-fried mac and cheese and a Nashville hot chicken sandwich, accompanied by craft beer and ice cream malts." - Dana Hatic

What a hidden gem. Great atmosphere something to look at in every corner. Food was ok for price great selection of beers. Close to campus which was a plus for me. No wait. Pleasant staff. Food and drink charged separately.

Driven by this place numerous times. Today, my wife and I decided to give it a try!! So glad we did, the cashier went over the menu with us. The food was delicious, service was outstanding and the atmosphere was great as well. Definitely gonna come back and definitely recommend it. Prices were fair as well. Thank you Hop + Grind ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Google
Appropriately funky and stupidly delicious burger joint. The crispy onions that they put on top of their hamburgers are absolutely insane. Also the fat fried french fries are beyond delicious. Check them out don’t forget to grab some of their fantastic brews that are on draft and enjoy! Oh, by the way you get a Nintendo cartridge as your spot in line.

Google
Best burger I have had in years. Very welcoming atmosphere and staff. I got the beast burger and all the flavors and textures complimented each other. The buns were tall but soft so you can actually take a bite. I will be going back. Parking is tricky, not much out front, mostly on the street nearby.

Hop + Grind is hopping GREAT! Every time I go they have some of the best burgers I've ever had! We went in a large group and easily got seating together, but on a night they're really hopping, I'm sure that wouldn't be the case. I got The Piggy Back, a cheeseburger with a fried Chicken patty and their signature sauce on it, and I highly recommend for all you carnivores out there. They have a bar so if you want a drink you go there after ordering your food. The atmosphere is a bit loud, with a very underground punk decore. They have an actual arcade machine near the entrance so it's perfect whether you want to get the high score, or need something to distract the kids while you wait for your food. So far this is my favorite place for Dinner in Durham, and I can't wait to go back!

Google
An amazing experience in the heart of UNH. A trip that will not disappoint. A variety of burgers that melt in your mouth. Chicken is so crispy & juicy. And, the fries are the best - great flavor & so crispy. The service was so friendly, knowledgeable, attentive & helpful, our compliments. Thank you all so kindly for your service. 🙂

Google
One of the best burgers I have ever had. The burgers are not your usual burgers by any means but if your willing to try something different then the fast burgers you will be surprised how thankful your taste buds will be thanking you. Big burgers, mouth watering, absolutely surprising the best burger I had in years! I can't say that every burger is going to be for everyone but I am looking forward to going back and trying every bizarre and strange as they sound burgers that they had on the menu. The fries are well cooked tasty as well. I am sure that leaving there hungry is unlikely. Most causes I would have to snack later in the evening but I never cross my mind. Loved the atmosphere with the 1980's lunch boxes that had me going around picking out ones I had when I was a kid. Loved the small over head lamp shades very clever 😄. Very friendly workers that will help you pick the right burger for you. I loved the Nintendo cartridges they had which again reminded me as a child I just wished they had "romance of the Three kingdoms" haha. The bad, well this was the third attempt to eat there because the parking isn't great. The one time I went they had 1/3 of the parking lot cones off. The line is very long ordering if you have people going for the first time that doesn't know the menu and that you order right as you walk in the door.....ya that was my friend and I and before I finished ordering there had to be 8 or 9 people behind us....sorry 😐. The food was served at a very reasonable time much faster then I would think knowing how long I had people wait while I ordered. Before going I would recommend learing the menu so you don't hold up the other hungry people. It was very loud so hard to hear. All in all I highly recommend trying this place. This is my go to place to get a burger at a real burger joint and look forward to trying out the other burgers. Great job on the burger thank you

Google
The food was amazing, everything was quick and made well. Expertly crafted food and great employees. Not the most wide range of foods, but what they offer they do it justice.

Yelp
Smaller, more informal sibling to Tuckaway Tavern with a smaller menu (burgers and chicken) and an upbeat vibe. Bar serving craft beers. Burger: I went with the Beast Mode, which comes with two patties, cheese, double bacon, "Hop sauce," crispy onions, pickles, and maybe more. Can't really specify temp, so the patties a bit dry, but well-seasoned and really good beef flavor. I liked the creamy, zingy sauce. But that bacon! Flavorwise, among the best bacon I've ever had. Texturewise, I really liked the thickness and pliability, but this came at the expense of some crispness. I'll take that trade but same may not. I also really liked the bun, which is a seeded briochy model that's less dense than what I've had previously at Tuckaway. Overall, very good burger. Gimme some juiciness and it's a great burger. Fries: They come standard with the burgers and chicken. A small order, but enough to get by and nicely done. Many fries options with various add-ons. You can also get onion strings, even though they're not on the menu. Shake: I went with chocolate. Not as fudgy as some I've had, but tasted very natural, with the milk flavor coming through, no shortage of chocolate, and a consistently that's thick but very drinkable. Good accompaniment to the burger. Chicken Tenders: I split a trio that came with fries and choice of sauce. These were huge and flattened, kinda like a chicken parm. Very crisp, well-seasoned, and juicy in spots, not-so-juicy in other spots. Good flavor on its own and in tandem with our hot honey (generous cup), dry rub (ditto), and both. Friendly staff throughout. Looking forward to coming back.

Yelp
While this wasn't our first time having food here, this was my first time inside eating and not doing takeout. I really enjoyed everything I ate and the Gunners Daughter Stout from the tap was a great addition to my meal. My wife who has an intolerance to Beef protein enjoyed her Uncle Ham but was seriously disappointed with the street corn practically swimming in juice/oil. Any other time we have street corn it's fried in a skillet or pan and usually is lightly browned with little to no juice. She really enjoyed the Stowe Cider Donut Cider. The young lady at the counter and the male bartender were both very friendly and helpful with both documenting and communicating her beef issues, and helping us with a great beverage to our lunch. I really enjoyed the retro decor but the music was a bit too loud for our taste. It was a Sunday on Homecoming Weekend on the campus.

Yelp
The menu here is huge so I thought I'd try it! I got the Country Clubbin chicken sandwich and all the flavors combined to make a super delicious sandwich. Just awesome. Place was jumping, right in the middle of campus. Parking was tough but if you're patient you'll get a spot! Def check it out!

Yelp
Went there with the freshman University of New Hampshire daughter. We ordered burgers and fries because what else? Plus the meats are from the Tuckaway Tavern. They were Good burgers. Very tasty& even the bun (which I usually do not eat) was decent. Tasty fries. Quick service. Clean restaurant with free water and nice setting . Solid restaurant & would come again.

Yelp
There's a ton of unique sandwich/burger options and all of them sound great (only downside is the burgers are on the smaller side). The service is usually pretty quick too. The seating and bar make it feel like more of a sit down place despite the fast food type ordering. Definitely would recommend stopping in.

Yelp
I love going here. Been twice. Love the fries upgrade options Not to mention the taste of the burgers. Sure, targets college kids but there are plenty of us locals 50+ years old going there for the food
google avatar

Yelp
Great atmosphere! Great food! Always enjoy an easy dinner at hop n grind. Service is also good

Yelp
Fun, popular burger joint in a college town with vibrant artwork, couches, and an arcade machine at the entrance. Counter-service style lended even more to the casual vibe of the place. I got the belly burger with classic fries and their house made cream soda. They have a wide variety of burgers and sides, but I wasn't too impressed by the burger. Bacon and patty were tough and the fries were alright. The mozzarella sticks that pulled us into this restaurant from a ig reel were, however, fire.
google avatar

Nicholas H.

Yelp
This restaurant has a very relaxed atmosphere, to include a booth that's a straight up couch, Chive TV playing, and a free arcade cabinet. The service was very friendly and quick for as busy as they were. The only way this place fell down was their fried chicken. We had 2 piggy back burgers with fries hoggy style, and a morning glory burger with classic fries. The fries were very tasty all around, and the morning glory burger disappeared quickly. Those of us with the piggy back burger, however, had to struggle through the chicken, which heavily reminded me of Church's Chicken (if you've ever had that). A lot of flour dredge that then sucks the life out of your mouth when you eat it. We had such a good experience with the rest of the food, however, that I'm confident this is a solid choice of a restaurant to eat at (complete with its own visit from DDD).

Yelp
I've been going to here since they opened when I was in college. I remember when the basic B use to be $5. The basic prices are still affordable and yet so delicious. I typically don't drive out of the way to get food but I will drive 15 minutes to get a burger. The morning glory with truffle shuffle fries are the best. Every single order I get is always truffle shuffle fries. I couldn't recommend this place more. Fast, affordable and delicious. Beers on tap are great too.
google avatar

Anna N.

Yelp
Food was delicious & inventive. Familiar items (burgers, fries, macaroni salad) presented with different ingredients/ flavor profiles that made them new & exciting. I want to go back over & over to try everything on the menu. Frappe was extra thick & and delicious end to the meal. Waitstaff was friendly & knowledgeable. Downside for me was ordering at the counter. And the house-made soda was underwhelming. The food more than made up for it.

Yelp
Super fun! This place is eclectic and they know and have to live it. Great burgers and local beers. Cool vibe and lots of college students to keep it lively. My son loved his shake and burger. Fries were fresh. A bit of a line to order and trying to get a seat is.... Tough. Staff is very friendly. When it's busy, the kitchen is slow and it took about 25 minutes for our burgers. I'm sure staff knows they have long wait times but the burgers are great. Go have fun, have a couple beers and bring friends.

Yelp
What an amazing little burger joint! I stopped in at a very quiet time of day (2pm on a Friday) and was so pleasantly surprised at the quality and taste of the food. I got the Basic B Burger which is such a laughable name because this burger is anything but BASIC! The pickles, crispy onions and hop sauce just took it over the top. I also had the Honky Tonk Blues side of fries which was amazing. SO many toppings. The hot honey was a nice touch. My son had the Cherry Bomb side and I think I actually liked that one better due to the cheese sauce. But I don't think you can go wrong except to not get some jazzed up fries.

Katie M.

Yelp
So good we went there twice! Loved the fried Mac and cheese. Caesar salad was perfectly chopped. . Family loved their burgers. Staff was super friendly. Old video games as table numbers- brilliant. 80s/90s feel.
google avatar

Yelp
What it says on the tin. Great burgers big beer selection, reasonable prices and friendly staff. Can't go wrong here, take the time to stop in.
google avatar

Yelp
Fry's are amazing - totally worth the trip :) a little hard to access with all the road work around UNH but once that clears up we will be visiting again :)

Cashman S.

Yelp
Amazing food and ambiance, everything came out very quickly. offered many non alcoholic fun drinks

Yelp
HogMarleyBurger for the win! #TripleD #GuysGrocetyGame #TuckawayTavetn #GrindhouseMeatCo #hop+grind What's not to love? The Ultimate Barbecue Smokehouse Burger is how it's advertised and Bobby Marcotte (Tuckaway Tavern / hop + grind / Grindhouse Meat Co) delivers!!! Bobby is one of our favorite characters from his appearances on Diners Drive-Ins and Dives / Guy's Grocery Games. First of all its packed up in a cooler with ice packs to ensure the ingredients stay fresh and gets delivered overnight! There's enough for 6 burgers in the package..you get: 6 Hog Marley Burgers (Fresh ground pork shoulder infused with pecan smoked pork shoulder, dry age bacon, bbq sauce, cheddar cheese+onions then pecsn smoked) 6 Amazing Burger Buns Pecan Smoked Pork Shoulder (fully cooked) House BBQ Mustard Sauce Dry Aged Bacon Slices (fully cooked) Sharp White Cheddar Cheese Fresh Scallions OH MY LORD....WHAT A GREAT COMBINATION! The bun itself is tasty....soft but firm enough to hold up under the pressure of all the meaty goodness! Then the burger itself with all those different flavors packed in is like a full course meal unto itself...the Pecan Smoked Pork Shoulder could stand alone on its own but plays so very well with the Hog Marley Burger, top it off with some of the best Bacon on the planet, Sharp White Cheddar Cheese, and FRESH Scallions..YahMan its da real ting!!

Yelp
LOVE this place. If u want a GOOD burger, please give this place a try. Won't even take a sec to fall in love. This was my 4th time visiting and everytime they don't disappoint you. Server's always full with energy and have plenty of seatings. I'm glad there's at least one good restaurant near UNH. Thank you for your business haha! I'd totally go back in a week.

Ira H.

Yelp
We'd heard good things about Hop + Grind and gave it a try. Location, service, and the physical layout were good, but the food was mediocre. My bacon cheeseburger was overcooked and the bacon was very tough and chewy. If we're in the area I'd try Hop + Grind again, but I wouldn't make a special trip to eat there.

craig a.

Yelp
The best chicken sandwich! Unfortunately, it was freshman move in and wait was pretty long, but not their fault!
google avatar

Mike B.

Yelp
Good and innovative variety of burgers. Nice selection of beers. This is one of those places (which unfortunately is becoming more common) where you do the work of the waitstaff yourself, yet they ask for a tip on their ipad screen at the counter when you pay. Ummmm no.

Jennifer G.

Yelp
Do not miss this place if you're in the area. Emma greeted us and was very helpful with our order. We had burgers of various sorts and a bbq pulled pork sandwich. They were all delicious and various loaded fry options were all gobbled up. Don't miss the cheese sticks. Super nice staff, great quality food. Very clean. Tip: park on the street, don't try to pull into the small lot.
google avatar

Julia R.

Yelp
If you are expecting fast service, do not order here. We were told our order will be ready at 5:50. We ordered it at five. I did not say the ready time until we had already ordered. We came at 5:50 expecting our order, it took about 30 minutes extra. It is just upsetting because the workers were not very nice about it when we asked where our order was. I said it's not online that I was going to take until 550. And they said that they are overwhelmed with orders. A good recommendation would be to not take orders if you cannot handle it. Very upsetting. Good food but not good customer service. I would've asked for a refund, but they all seem very stressed out.

Yelp
My review is a little late .. but here it goes . I tried this New Hampshire location on a whim . I'm not local to the area , and found it on my gps . I got the " BELLY" burger with " Parmed and Dangerous" fries . My order was take out due to Covid . And I'll honestly say that this is one of the best burgers , and fries I've ever had . All condiments were perfectly proportioned , as well as the fries .. and not to mention this all cost me at round $10 flat .. absolutely amazing establishment . And I'll be sure to go back again . Or try the other location .

Yelp
Simply Amazing! Our bartender(petite blonde) was awesome- she made great recommendations for beer/food! I got the FunGuy, it was savory and delish and I would come back to get the same thing! Atmosphere was cool and relaxed, good place to come for a beer and amazing food- you can tell the chef has put a lot of thought and effort into the food. We also got the Mac cakes with bacon- unreal and a must have!
google avatar

Mary R.

Yelp
Hop n Grind is by far the best restaurant in Durham! Their burgers are so creative and delicious. I get something different every time I go here because everything is so good. A few of my favorites are... Parma Sutra El Guapo Taco Falafel and so many more! Their sides are also delicious. I normally get the pig pile fries but everything tastes amazing. They also have great beers on tap and canned. I normally sit at the bar when I go here. They have service at the bar. Otherwise, you order when you walk in and they deliver your food to your table. Must try! 10/10 would recommend
google avatar

Gina L.

Yelp
I got the $12 piggyback burger + beef tallow fries. Absolutely lightening speed service. We got waters from the gatorade jugs around the restaurant, and within probably 5 minutes our food was out ... a little *too* fast, but what are you gonna do. The piggyback was a piece of fried chicken, couple slices of bacon, fried onions atop a burger with some American cheese. It was a well done patty, and could have been juicer imo, but the chicken was quite good. I really like the ketchup because it wasn't the typical smooth Heinze, with a slight tang of flavor. The mayo wasn't your average Hellman's, with flecks of black pepper. Definitely made the meal different in a good way. I'd give the food a 3 stars, but the staff was very friendly and it came out so quickly. Although you seat yourself after you order, we were checked up on a couple times after we got our food therefore +1 star. Decoration was dope - I loved the vintage video game used to mark your order at your table. Great selection of beers, and overall just a great atmosphere.
google avatar

Sandy C.

Yelp
Great burger and beer selection - can get crowded. Outdoor seating during nice weather is a plus!
google avatar

Fred L.

Yelp
This is a UNH hangout as it is tucked away in the back of the center of town. The parking lot is very narrow and doesn't have many spots. If you drive down it be prepared to back up to get out as it is not wide enough to turn round. We were forced to find a street spot. I am not sure if this is because there was a hockey game at the Whitt on this night or it is just a congested area..... When you walk in the door you hang a quick left and go down a line to the registers which is where you place your order. They have laminated versions of the menu for you to review while you wait to get to the registers. The menu is very "unique" and very limited. If you don't don't like burgers this is not an ideal spot. The burgers are made of beef, chicken, pork and veggin. I found the selection of "homemade" sodas to be the largest challenge along with finding a table on this specific night. The place was packed and even the visiting hockey team had about 7 of their players in here to grab a bite before the game. The quality of the food was very high and that is a plus. I personally found the limited options consistent with what my pallet likes to be the largest downfall. I had the Parma Sutra which is essentially a chicken parmigiana sandwich made out of ground chicken with heavy seasoning. The Mac & Cheese was not with tradition cheeses so this was not liked by my GF daughter who is very specific and limited on her food likes. My GF just had a regular burger and she agreed the quality of the meat was high but the sophistication was over the top. Fries were very good but very soggy. Not sure if we will come back here but at least we know what to expect if we go back again.

Yelp
Milkshakes are really good! Service is quick and it's a great environment to hang out

Lysanne M.

Yelp
Fantastic burger experience! A spot we frequent, Hot chick is a fav!! Karate pig & Greece lightning too! Truffle shuffle fries are a must!
google avatar

Carolyn C.

Yelp
Good food, although they were out of some menu items and did not communicate. Front of house girls were kind and helpful. Bartender, skinny guy, late 20's, was blatantly rude, passive aggressive, slow.
google avatar

Chrysanthi L.

Yelp
Was looking for a place to meet some friends for lunch in the Portsmouth area and stumbled upon the great Yelp reviews for Hop + Grind. We were promptly seated upon arrival. The interior has such cool decoration and is full of awesome relics. The restaurant was still being COVID-friendly (much appreciated) - we placed our orders via a QR code at the table. They had an excellent craft beer selection, which made the experience for me. Between the 4 of us, we tried the Greece Lightning, Hot Chick, and Fun Guy with varying sides of fries. They were delicious and everyone was very happy with their food. Good stuff and killer vibe!
google avatar

Frank P.

Yelp
This was my first time to Hop + Grind. Overall my experience was amazing. I love a good burger and fries and they had no short supply of flavor combinations to offer. This is a well known local spot near UNH, and it's well worth a trip to check it out. Enjoy!!!

Reese A.

Yelp
Best burger I ever had! Large, friendly, and helpful staff that was working very hard, especially in the kitchen. The restaurant itself was awesome, felt like a retro sports bar with a clean and modern twist. Definitely will be going back!
google avatar

Max C.

Yelp
I want to start this off by saying that the service is great and I was greeted with kindness. My girlfriend and I shared a Mac daddy burger and the Kimcheezy fries. The burger was great and the fries were absolutely unreal. I've ordered from here before and had similar experiences. My go-to is the Morning Glory, would highly recommend.

Pam M.

Yelp
Tried for the first time today. The fried chicken honky tonk sando was terrible - dredged in cayenne pepper and that's all I could taste - it wasn't even the heat, but the texture, the breading was dusty tasting (imagine eating cayenne pepper and paprika with a spoon). Chicken was so thin, you could not really peel off the breading. It was inedible. The carrot slaw, strawberry lemonade, and my friend's fries (which became my lunch) were excellent. A great vibe in there and I will try again with a different meal.
google avatar

Mike F.

Yelp
The food is great, fries are awesome. It's a neat little dive. The ordering processes and lack of waitstaff are peculiarly odd. The turnovers slow so expect a wait. It could be amazing if they had waitstaff. There's just no flow
google avatar

Matthew L.

Yelp
Great burgers and atmosphere! They have a great menu both for food and drinks. I would highly recommend if you're in Durham and want a gourmet burger.
google avatar

Josh C.

Yelp
Fun atmosphere and always great food. My favorite part is the awesome variety on tap. Try everything on the menu--never had a disappointing meal.
google avatar

Jennifer C.

Yelp
What a cool idea for burgers! Very delicious food and drinks. Nice patio area to sit outside in nice weather.
google avatar

Richard C.

Yelp
It is a rare thing when I feel like I should give 5 stars. The Hop + Grind deserves every star. The service was good and the food was great. Talk about an awesome combination. I got the Bomb Diggity burger without mushrooms. It was extremely good. I upgraded to the Cherry Bomb fries. Delicious! Then I got their homemade lemon lime soda. Just awesome! Just as awesome was the atmosphere. A great combination of college, family, and friends. There were people at the bar drinking and watching the Patriots beat the Jets. College students at many of the tables enjoying the weekend and parents with their children enjoying burgers. Hop + Grind = Delicious + Fun + Awesome
google avatar

Bri O.

Yelp
Whoa. What an awesome experience. I got the beet burger which was definitely flavorful and everyone else had meat burgers which they raves about. The bathrooms are clean, service is great, drinks are strong enough, they have high chairs for the littles and a separate bar you order from. The place is very laid back and comfortable with neat decor. It's a fun place and we'll definitely be back!

Scott M.

Yelp
The burgers were amazing. Cooked to perfection and the bun was also great. Why I don't give it 5 stars is because it's basically Hunger Games to try to get a table. You need to hover at a table that you think is leaving soon and jump on the table and hope no one else has the same idea. It was very stressful to stand close to a table while they were eating and have people do it to us while we were eating. They need a host that takes names when people come in.

Sarah F.

Yelp
Super delicious craft burgers. Pretty decent craft beer selection too. I ordered the mushroom burger, and the bartender was very considerate to ask if it was OK that their fries are cooked in tallow (it was totally fine with me; I'm more of a flexitarian and sometimes simply choose vegetarian options while dining out because they sound good). The burger itself was outstanding flavorwise, although it was messy to eat (the fries were also amazing). Hop + Grind is priced more than fairly too, which I think is because they're smack dab in the middle of a college town and know that their main clientele are broke university kids looking for a decent local meal. Man, do they deliver!
google avatar

Jenn T.

Yelp
Yummy coffee place - very fresh food and great coffee. Staff also friendly and attentive.
google avatar

Thomas M.

Yelp
Hop + Grind continues to be one of the best food options in Durham. The quick service, wide variety of flavors and customizations, and the excellent quality have been consistent every time I have visited. The Morning Glory burger is one of the messiest things I have ever eaten, yet I can't help but go back for more! The milkshakes are delicious, and the french fries are so flavorful that they could serve as a meal on their own. If you're looking for a great quick meal, this is the place to go.

Pete H.

Yelp
We had the basic burger and the Beast with regular fries, very good. Good draft choices.we picked a good time it was not too crowded. Prices are reasonable. Will be back to try the chicken sandwich's choices
