Decent chinese food with big menu options, no Sichuan spicy food. Reasonable price with 5 for. Red wine full glass.

I recently tried Hop Li Seafood Restaurant, and I found the shrimp and soup to be quite good. The fish, however, was amazing and very tasty! The service was excellent and attentive, and the price was very reasonable for the quality of service. The interior area features some nice Chinese art. The only drawback I noticed was the restroom, which wasn't in the best condition, and the floor was slippery

My family has been dining here since I was a kid. The food has always been consistent and flavorful. Definitely my first choice in Chinatown. If I lived closer, I’d probably be here every week. Even during the pandemic, I’d order for pickup when I could.

Food is super delicious, I never tried crispy chow mein but they sure did not disappoint! The food is a little on the pricey side but the portions are big we can always eat 4-7 of us out of one plate of each item. Staff is cool, and the food comes out in a good time and hot! They serve the soup for you, and they have big family tables that have a spinning glass in the center for easier reach.

Good food and excellent services, especially beef. Will come back again.

Recommended by a friend. Came here alone at lunch time. I was not the only single diner. Lots of seating. People picking up Togo orders and and large parties coming in. Very clean. Quick service but they did not speak English and not very attentive. Food was delicious. Smaller portions for the lunch specials, ordered a side of fried rice, there are no substitutes allowed. Fresh lobsters in the glass tanks. Will recommend and would likely return.

Been coming here for 30 years! Always great tasty foods and service. Many local downtown employees a d law enforcement come here to eat. That honey pepper fish...bomb! I use to order the Mongolian beef, that was good too. The presentation of food just seems more clean, vibrant and fresh. Parking is a bit tricky...there are only few slots in front of the restaurant, but across the street they have more. There is also street.

Unfortunately, this restaurant falls short of my expectations when it comes to Chinese cuisine. There are more disappointments than pleasant surprises. The prices are steep, and the restaurant's cleanliness is subpar, particularly in the kitchen and restrooms.

This is my go to spot if you want some good lo mien which is the must have the house special lol mien and squid with spicy salt. We ordered other dish which was the sizzling short rib which was ok. The walnut shrimp was good they got some hefty shrimp. The only dish that I did not like was the fried fish fillet I forgot which one I got but that taste wasn't there the fish fillet was better off by itself. Service was great and really understanding by giving plastic spoon and forks to my 3 daughter's. The place is nice and clean. This is my go to family dinner spot besides yang chow since there is hardly wait here and have a Delicious house special lo mien with that bussin spicy salt squid.

Ordered pan fried rock cod fillet with vegetables over steam rice, priced $9.75 if it is ordered on weekdays, at lunch special time, but I ordered on Saturday, the price jumped to total $15.88. Tax included Dinner price. And supposed to be more fishpieces or more quantities. Veggies. It's all good, but - The rock cod fillet are all STEAMED, not PAN FRIED AT ALL AS PRINTED on MENU. No time to complain and lost my trust.

Hop Li Seafood Restaurant is another historic Chinese restaurant located in Chinatown. Out of the four I've been to recently, I'd rank this one above Foo Chow and Full House Seafood, but probably below Golden Dragon. The four of us had a great time here sharing a few dishes. I'd love to come back again to try more of their menu items. Service was quick and efficient.

Food alone, it's pretty good for Chinese. The food is a 4/5. Quality seems alright but it's a little on the high side. Everything we ordered came out piping hot and crisp which meant it was freshly prepared. Only bad thing was my steam white rice. It was well over cooked and was like a rice cake... all mushy inside the middle. The bad part is the service and atmosphere. Half the restaurant is closed down, just looks like areas for storage so only a few open tables. Decor is older, floors a little dirty, and tables/menus a lityle sticky. The gentlemen running the place doesn't speak English well and either doesn't hear or pretends not to hear any requests. For example, extra napkins or silverware... you can ask but you may or may not get it. It's a typical Chinese restaurant with poor service but pretty good food. Overall, I'd give this place a 3.6/5 so I'm rounding up.

Honey walnut shrimp 4/5 - this was good but portion size is small! There were probably about 10 shrimps on the plate so that was disappointing Fried tofu cubes 4/5 - this was good but I thought it could have more flavor. Green beans 2/5 - this was soooo salty! My family usually loves green beans and is one of the things that goes by quick but this was so salty we couldn't finish it. Texture was good though and crispy. Fried shrimp 4/5 - good flavor and salty but eat it with rice and it's perfect. Taro dessert 1/5 - this was so bad.. the tapioca was undercooked and hard. It got stuck in our teeth bc it was hard. The flavor just tasted like condensed milk. Taro was also undercooked

An old school spot for when your craving something delicious and familiar. Came here for lunch as we were in the neighborhood and craving this particular style of traditional Chinese American fare. We were seated promptly and a pot of tea soon followed. Narrowing down the options of what to order was difficult as there is only so much my partner and I could eat. We opted not to get a whole Peking duck..this time. In the end we got delicious garlic shrimps with green beans and tangerine beef. Fluffy white rice of course accompanied the meal. Everything arrived fast, hot, and fresh. This place is part of a now rare style of dining with its white tablecloths, lazy Susan's, and distinct lack of "Instagramable" decor/food. You come here to eat good food with friends and family with nostalgia of the way LA Chinatown used to be.

This place came highly recommended from someone. Based on the reviews I was torn. I just went with the recommendation. Find out for myself. I called to make sure the place can accommodate our party of 10 around 5:00pm on a Saturday. I would recommend if you have a large party. They were able to accommodate us. The parking is across the street you'll see where it says Hop Li parking or if you're lucky there are 3 spots in front of the restaurant itself. This place is pretty big once you get inside. The tables for big parties are towards the back. We were sat down once we got there. We were still missing a few from our party. Not sure if this is why we were left alone by the servers. They just brought us menus. Funny once the rest of our party arrived service picked up. Here came the water and after we placed our order here come the drinks. Then after the drinks the wonton soup we ordered came out. The waiter served us soup in bowls for every one. Great service. We were just finishing up our soup when one after another the plates of food we ordered came out. Service was quick. Plates that stood out were the tangerine beef, sautéed green beans , and the shrimp with snow peas. After what seemed to be a slow start my party and I were very pleased with the service and the food. One knock was one person in my party ordered a beer and was never asked if he wanted another one. Other than that Hop Li is a place to try out if ever in Chinatown.

Service was good but the food was lacking for my taste bud. Our sizzling fish didn't even sizzle... wth? The beef did sizzle but the fish did not taste good with honey garlic sauce. The sizzling black pepper was tender. The best dish was the snow pea leaf. The tomatoes beef chow mein was ok and the spicy salt pork chops was not tasty just deep fried with batter. If you like the onions and jalapeños then you can add that flavor otherwise there was not salty taste in the pork chop. The fried rice was cold actually everything was cold like it sat before it came to us. I won't be back here.

Haven't been here in over 20 years. But, since my girls wanted Chinese food while we were in area, I thought of Hop Li. Service was great and food was just as I remembered. Not much has changed but it does look like they made some small renovations around the front dining area.

Recently, my friends took me here for my first lunch in LA. We lucked out with street parking right in front of the restaurant. They have 2 or 3 stalls in the front and a small lot across the street. My friend felt that the dishes tasted different and wasn't as good as before, but I thought it tasted amazing! There were multiple servers who took care of us and their service was good! I would recommend going here for some good and reasonably priced Chinese food.

My group of 8-10 friends has been coming to Hop Li the last several years to celebrate Chinese New Year. The service is always on point, the quality of food is exceptional. Egg plant dish has a unique hint of spice and just melts in your mouth. The fried fish is shareable dish and so crispy you can eat the bones. Sliced beef is tender. Pork Hot & sour soup is a great option as well. They have ample parking lot right across from the restaurant and this is winding walking distant to LA Chinatown main plaza. We hope that Hop Li will be around for many more years

Bad service. I called to order my food for pick up and the guy on the phone was rude and was rushing me off the phone. When I went to pick up my order, again, the guy at the front was rude! I ordered honey walnut shrimp and it only came with 6 pieces of small shrimps!!! Ridiculous! Service and the food needs to improve.

Food at Hop Li is always good. This restaurant is a different experience depending on who waits on you. The service is pleasant. The ambiance is a clean restaurant with nicely done tables with white table cloths.

Came in on a whelm after doing some shopping. Checked their yelp page and ratings were mostly cool so i decided to give them a try. Restaurant smelled amazing so I ordered a bunch of stuff. House lo mein, calamari, spicy garlic scallops, and honey walnut shrimp! The only thing that was good was the calamari, everything else fell pretty flat- including the service. I'd really like to give them 2 and a half stars but because it wasn't quite 2 stars, I went with the 3.

Came here with some friends for an early lunch one day after having a buffet fest from a weekend cruise. My friend said this was one of her favorite go to spots after any vacation. We let her do the ordering and everything tasted delicious. The fried fish was huge and it was so crispy and delicious, we devoured it. The restaurant is pretty much a hole in the wall. It's next to a liquor store with minimal parking. I never would have thought to eat at this place. The service was fast the the server was nice. I'd come back here again...

In a neighborhood that is constantly moving away from the traditional, it's still good to see places like Hop Li are standing the test of time. Waiters in uniforms, table cloths, a pot of tea , large tables with lazy susans. A menu that has all the Chinese American hits. The traditional banquet dinners you had growing up eating in long lines outside your family's go to Chinese restaurant in the 80s /90s when Chinatown was a destination . Things have changed in a Sunday lunch time we walked in and we were easily seated, but the food was exactly how I remembered growing. Fast, delicious, bountiful and the right level of satisfying. Not over greasy or too oily. This is the type of Chinese food living out in the suburbs I dream about all too often. Wok shrimps with string beans , garlic, ginger and brown sauce. Go perfectly with white rice served in plastic containers served family style, fresh and steaming right at your table. We also ordered tangerine beef, a hint of spice, distinct tangerine flavor and the most satisfying crunch and texture. These are basics, but basics done right. Their menu really runs through everything you can think of. Peking duck, lobster, walnut shrimp, abalone. My issue is I never have enough space in my stomach to eat everything I want so I compromise and tell myself, we can always come back again another time. And I hope that's the truth. These types of Chinese restaurants are institutions and I hope will always be a part of the DNA of Los Angeles.

Can't go wrong with this place. We've come here twice and wish we lived closer so we could come by more often. Their salt and pepper shrimp, crab, and lobster are to die for--super flavorful. The batter on everything is perfectly crisp, not too soggy. Except for this one time I called to ask for the market price for crab (guy told me to just come and that he'd give me a good price), the servers here are attentive and friendly. This place hands down is my absolute favorite spot to go to when I'm craving Chinese style seafood.

Food was delicious especially their house special chow mien and calamari. Servers were friendly and attentive. Restaurant needs some deep cleaning to smell fresh not unwashed linens.

The food here is not bad. It tastes good when it comes out hot. I ordered the Peking duck. It was all right. The duck skin was not as crispy as I'm used to at other Chinese restaurants. I also ordered the mix seafood soup, which tasted fine when it was hot. The steamed fish fillet was soy sauce was decent. The steamed pork dumpling was good. And the house chow mein was ok but tasted more on the bland side. The service was mediocre. The ambience could use some improvement since they use fluorescent flood lighting which helped dull the senses. The bathroom stalls were unfortunately filthy and seemed not well maintained.

Omg the food here was amazing! I was recommended to try this place by my co-worker. He really came through with this one. I took my 3 sons on a Metrolink ride from our house to union station, walked over, arrived about 15 minutes later. We were seated sight away. The menu at first glance was confusing but then I realized the portions are mainly for groups so you can choose portions for 4 or portions for 8. My son (13) says, "the chef is wearing a bandana and a muscle shirt so you know the food is gonna be bussin" lol I thought that was hilarious. We ordered a variety of entrees, egg flower soup for starters, curry beef, spicy bbq beef with onions, chicken asparagus, and Cod. ALL OF IT WAS AMAZING! If you're ever in the Chinatown area or near union station I highly recommend this place!

In Los Angeles today. Went for a late lunch today with two friends. The servers are lovely, helpful, and had a great sense of humor. The menu was very nice and had many choices. We ordered three lunch specials, and shared between us . Mu Shu pork, Pork and shrimp friend shrimp, and shrimp in lobster and black bean sauce were all outstanding!! The egg drop soup and crispy noodles was a great beginning. I would suggest going.

Looks like my last 2-star review had been removed. It was a visit during the pandemic, when the restaurant was in a sorry state -- the food tasted bad and the place smelled awful. Now, nearly two years hence, happy to report the dining room looks sparkling clean and the food is, well, probably the best Cantonese in Chinatown today (surpassing Mayflower, Phoenix, Fortune Gourmet Kitchen, and that giant tourist trap known as Yang Chow.) Half roast duck - super tender and meaty, only $15 (better and cheaper than all the BBQ shops in San Gabriel Valley except Ho Kee Cafe) Shrimp with string beans - colossal shrimp and perfectly wokked string beans, $17 Will definitely come back for more.

If you're ordering one of the banquet meals, make sure the waiter understands which one you are ordering. My family went there and we picked one of the banquet meals and instead of getting the one we picked, they brought out the most expensive one. So instead of getting what we wanted, we ended up getting a bunch of stuff we did not order and we had to pay for stuff we did not order. Quality of food has gone down. Will not be going back EVER.

Alway an excellent meal at Hop Li , my family has been coming here for as long as I can remember, 40+ years. Just a few photos of our many meals at Hop Li. Make sure you bring 10 of your hungry friends to be able to have a wide variety of their delicious food. Be adventurous and order dishes you would not normally have, you won't be disappointed.

This is a great place when you have a big party getting together. Hidden at the back of Chinatown, so lots of parking places. Great choices for dishes.

Dishes were tasty, compliments to the chef. Might be reusing rice bowl. We were served rice with a scoop that was clearly used and not clean, and we got a bowl that still has dried rice sticking to the side.

Came here for lunch with my colleagues. Parking is available across the street. They have lunch special menu. Staff is friendly, and they all speak fluent Cantonese. The restaurant is a bit old, but clean and neat. Dishes were a bit Americanized, but still tasted good. We ordered string beans, spicy salty and pepper pork chop, sweet and sour chicken, and house special crispy noodle. The pork chop was a bit dry and rough. My favorite is the sweet and sour chicken as the chicken is tender. Will come back for lunch again because this is a very convenient location.

My entire family, on both sides, have been dining at this restaurant for at least 20 years. Both this location and the west side restaurant. Holidays, funerals, birthdays... HopLi's has long been sanctioned by my grandfather who used to frequent Paul's Kitchen which was "the" go-to spot until closing. After all these years, HopLi's is still our go-to for delicious food. It's an old Skool LA/Angelino spot that brings back memories and warmth and familiar flavors. I ordered a feast for Mother's Day! My mom and my grandma (who is fast approaching 102 years old), both have their favorite dishes. Dinner easily falls into place, followed by a Phoenix Bakery cake (another go-to spot ever since I can remember).

if you are looking for some traditional lazy-susan-type chinese food restaurant, this is the one! came with a huge party and they were able to get the food out in no more than 10 minutes. Portion sizes were good - no regrets. service was typical and perfectly fine. food was good - they do not skip out on seasoning for sure - salt and msg are clearly present so you will need a nap immediately after. highlight for me was surprisingly the Spicy Green Beans & Spicy Eggplant. special mentions go to the salt & pepper shrimp and honey walnut shrimp (can never go wrong)! highly recommend getting white rice on the side to even out the flavor! perks - small but free lot across from the restaurant. tight space but hey if you can snag a spot! note - they do not have dim sum.

It has been a while since I have eaten at this place. I got their lunch entrees for take out. The honey glazed walnut shrimp was just a few pieces but it was good. Also got the porkchop with spicy salt which had very little meat- mainly batter. I think to compensate they included a whole lot of rice enough to feed a dozen hungry folks!

We came at 2 PM after visiting some family and there were a few tables being served. By the end of our meal, the entire left side of the restaurant was full! Service was impeccable and our dishes were served within 10 minutes of ordering. All dishes tasted authentically Cantonese. It's affordable and a solid choice in Chinatown. Will be returning soon.

Our family and friends have been coming to Hop Li for at least 30 years. The business deterioted in the past 2 years. The waiters became rude. The quality of their food got worse. A month ago, I ordered some takeout. One of them is their house special chowmein. When i opened the container, i smelled something foul. I tasted it, and I spitted it out immediately. It tasted like mold. Yes, mold. Disgusting indeed. I told my family and friends, and all of us will not ever go back to Hop Li. I believe that if they do not change their poor service and bad food quality, they will close their business soon.

My family and I have been coming here for years. It's our tradition to come here with some family friends for Lunar New Year celebration. Since we have been coming here for years. The adults of the group have a relationship with the staff so they know our group. The food is great! We always start with a soup depending on what they have. This year we had the winter melon soup with chicken. The presentation on this one was great since they serve in the winter melon. Of course, we have to get the stuffed chicken with sweet rice and gravy. You have to order this ahead of time. Other favorites are the honey walnut shrimp, minced squab with bamboo shoots and lettuce, Peking pork chops and the steamed fish fillet with the special house soy sauce. We'll get other entrees depending on the size of the group. But everything we have is always good. They have a small parking lot across the street so if you come early or get lucky you can find a spot in there. The restaurant is always clean. With two main seating areas. They have a section towards the front for smaller groups like 2-4 people and a section in the back with bigger tables for groups of 6-8 people.

Hop Li is a great "hole in the wall" Chinese restaurant that we've been going to for years! We had one dish in mind, the steamed fish and then it turned into a full blown meal! Pictures say a thousand words and everything was great! Service 8/10 Ambiance 7/10 Bathrooms 5/10 Food 9/10 Value 8/10 Cleanliness 7/10 Will I return? Yes! The Peking Duck and Steamed Fish was phenomenal!

I have completed a review a long time ago but it seemed to have been deleted. I enjoy coming to Hop Li since it has the offerings of Hong Kong style Chinese foods that I enjoy to eat. Parking can be tricky but I used to park across the street in a lot but today I was able to park in a meter spot. Always fast service with kindness. Dishes come out really fast with good portions and pricing is standard.

As a native in Los Angeles and coming from a family that has gone to eat Chinese several times a month my entire life, I can tell you that Hop-Li keeps the traditions alive. The food is amazing from the fish fillet with Chinese broccoli , to the rice chau faun with chicken or the Mongolian beef and the Wo wonton soup to start. It is delicious and 1000% authentic. If you read posts about bad service, or not understanding the waiters, or rude attendance, then turn around and go to Panda Express. The service is straight up Chinese culture. If you don't know it or if you are easily offended, then don't come. But if you want to feel like you are in a local Chinese restaurant in Shanghai than you will enjoy the food and walk away happy and satisfied. This is about the food, only the food and nothing but the food so help you. I will keep coming back until the 3rd generation runs this place!! Never disappointed!!

Been driving 2 hrs one way for 20 yrs to eat here. ( we live in Palm Springs) The BEST AUTHENTIC CHINESE FOOD. Everything on the menu is good. The waiters have been here forever too!! Don't hesitate- we celebrate all our occasions here!

I have noticed on several occasions that if you come with non Asians, they provide TERRIBLE service. My wife's family is Mexican and over the years as their regular employees left, the new folks are very rude and have 0 customer service skills. While the food is good, I can't get past the awful service we have received the last few times. There are plenty of other Chinese restaurants in the area so I would recommend to avoid this place. Very sad as we have been coming here for a decade

Their price had doubled! Our orders didn't even include steamed rice ( used to come with our ala carte orders). Perhaps bec it was Mother's Day when we placed the orders ?

We stopped by here for an early dinner, about 4:30. Wasn't busy at all. Food was fabulous! We had the fried fish In mushroom gravy, cashew chicken, pork fried rice, chicken I. Black bean sauce, and slippery chicken. Thank you to our server, Tony for such great service. Our food came out hot, and fresh. Everything was great... thank you for the delicious meal. We will definitely be back again .. Thanks for the good eats...

I've eaten here many times in several years, mostly lunch during the week and it has always been a hidden location that doesn't get enough foot traffic with Parking across the street from the restaurant. We were trying to eat at other locations but they've closed down such as Fortune China Inn that recently closed at the end of October 2023. New Dragon Seafood Restaurant during COVID in March 2020, and Regent China Inn in July 2019 within the Chinatown area. The food I've ordered here, has been delicious every time, portions are great at lunch special prices including rice and soup, staff been great. The time to order for them to cook is pretty fast depending on what's being ordered.

a family favorite. been going here for as long as i can remember. love all the dishes here, truly authentic chinese found here! favorite dishes ~ honey walnut shrimp when i was a kid, my siblings and i would fight over the last shrimp lol. lightly breaded shrimp is coated in a yummy, creamy, tangy mayo based sauce and adorned with candied walnuts. must order! spicy salt shrimp this one is great, through the years i've learned it's best to eat the tail, it gives that extra crunch. not really actually that spicy but more savory, deep fried shrimps are coated in "spicy salt" (whatever that is lol) and a mix of pepper, garlic, aromatics. make sure to eat this with rice otherwise it could be a little overpowering. also, the squid in spicy salt is a banger as well. it's not rubbery at all and melts in your mouth! hot and sour soup the best way i can describe this soup is that it tastes like an asian buffalo wing, in flavor. i know that there are pieces of pork, tofu, bamboo shoot, etc. i love this, it's tangy, hot, and sour. every time we start off the dinner with a big bowl of this soup! pea shoots i like the pea shoots cuz they cook it in a chicken broth and garlic mix that gives it an extraordinary flavor. my family always orders the garlic string green beans as well, which is more popular than pea shoots, but yeah both are different but it's good to get your greens y'kno rockcod filet in corn sauce this is an interesting dish, there isn't any cheese but corn and egg which kinda gives cheese vibes lol. a good one! crispy noodle beef chow mein i love the crisp noodles paired with the gravy sauce. the toppings (bok choy and beef) are alright, but add some variance to the dish. tbh i would be fine with just ordering the noodles LOL but i don't think it's possible. there are many many more dishes i could name but yeah you just gotta go and try it for yourself. it's good to have longstanding establishments like this and they need your support! p.s. the almond jello is a bomb dessert lol

The food is just awful. We ordered the steak and vegetable stir fry, spicy eggplant with pork and house special chow mein. The steak had a gelatinous texture to it that fell apart in your mouth. I think it had been treated with baking soda to tenderize it-ick. The eggplant was decent, but the chow mein was mostly over cooked noodles with a few scattered vegetables and meat here and there. We didn't finish anything and left it on the table.

This is a old school chinese restaurant. Food is good the service is awsome...always gotta get honey walnut shrimp the shrimp are huge..fried fish / fried chicken solid too. Try it out if your in the area and they are open on all holidays

Hands down the best, I've been coming here for more than 35 years, it's just as good then as it is now and I don't go that often because I don't live close and believe me, my palate has changed. The servers are still no nonsense which I love, they're there to take your order and serve your food and they do it perfectly. There is no excuse, even during lunch time during the week. There's always parking in the street or in their lot, by saying that, you cannot beat their lunch specials.
