Chinatown’s 75-Year-Old Hop Louie Is Ready For a Big Comeback - Eater LA
"Legendary Chinatown bar Hop Louie is coming back from the dead more than two years after closing. That’s per LA Magazine, who say the 75-year-old property along Mei Ling Way will be returned to its former glory by Elan Kermani, an LA-based real estate agent; JB Moresco, a longtime nightlife type who has been running the nearby General Lee since 2014; and designer Matt Winter, who will be driving the look of the place. Together the team says they’re keen to reopen both the dive bar side and the restaurant side (a condition of their ABC license), but the process could take more than a year." - Farley Elliott
Great for a dive bar. No one else was there but it smelt as if someone was smoking cigarettes inside. Not a big deal, dim lightening no music but reasonable prices. I'll be back if and when the restaurant opens. They did have a B rating but wasn't bothered by that

I went here in June 2014 and it was surprisingly good! The restaurant is upstairs and the decor is kinda out-dated but it has that old school Chinese feeling. The food was really good. My family and I ate lunch there. They have around a $5.50 lunch special with good portions. They also have non-meat dishes too!

Cool place, awesome atmosphere but don't expect to be able to go into the restaurant anytime soon. It's been closed since late August/ early September. Rumor has it the owners are looking to retire. Some new restaurant may pop in. Bar is still open downstairs though.

No frills. Smells like cigarettes. Stiff drinks. Real bartenders not measuring out shots but pouring from the heart. Real people drinking. Juke box playing. Dark windowless room. I absolutely loved it in here. Reminds me of an under ground New York place with out the pretentiousness.

Fun dive bar/restaurant in China town, an institution, one might say. Little changed since it opened in 1986, it will provide a dependable environment. Sound system was surprisingly loud.

Went here often as a kid to celebrate my parents wedding anniversary. (many moons ago). It used to look so huge back then! I have fond memories especially the wishing well around the corner!

Sad to see them gone! Nostalgic landmark, simple place with Good People, Good Food..

An LA institution, the restaurant is closed but the bar is open. Has everything you would want: Scorpion Bowls, dark red lighting, a dance floor and a bartender who will begrudgingly make you drinks like he is doing you a favor.
