The 19 Best Beer Bars in Houston | Eater Houston

"This bar offers one of the best selections of brews in the Spring/Woodlands area, with more than 30 draughts and almost 50 bottles, including hard-to-find selections from places like Copenhagen, Flanders and Walloon in Belgium, and Soragna in Italy." - Brittanie Shey

The staff is always great. The rotating selection of beer is on point. The restrooms are always clean. Its a great hang out place. My husband loves to come here any chance he gets. It's so cool and great that they have food from Dragon Bowl C here. I'm not a big beer person like my husband is. So having an option of boba at the same location works out superbly for me and my husband. This location is an awesome spot for my husband and I do both have things we love.

Google
Excellent selection of highly rated brews. Recommend a flight to taste as many as possible.

Google
Fun dive bar atmosphere with great Asian fusion food! I came for the beer selection and it didn't disappoint with a huge selection of Houston breweries on tap and many bottles too. Bartender was watching baseball with the regulars which is kinda cool if you're a local, but was hard to get him to come to my table of 4 to get our orders... Would've had another round if he came over within the first 10 minutes of us being there but had to flag him over so we didn't have time.

Overall: My favorite bar in Houston. High ratings for a reason. Price: Beer prices are pretty average especially for what they serve. Food prices are decent as well, but I love the food here, so I don’t mind paying a little extra. Food: I used to be a big fan of the craft hot dogs, they’re not on the main menu anymore but I’ve been told they have a special menu for certain days/times when they still make them. They pair great with the loaded fries, kimchi fries are my favorite they are phenomenal. They’ve changed chefs since I first started coming here but they do a great job. Service: Everyone here is always nice and super fun. I’ve never had any issues with service here. Atmosphere/cleanliness: very nice vibes inside. Super chill for everyone. Few tv’s for sports. Never seen it dirty here.

Google
The staff was super friendly, made us feel welcome and answered all of our questions. They have up to 45 beers on tap. The menu is super organized so you can easily find what you want to drink. Awesome place to check out. They do not serve food here, but occasionally have food trucks and places within walking distance to grab a bite to eat.

Google
I love Hop Scholar..I’ve been here a few times and food and beer is always on point! I love their beer selection - there’s something for everyone. The staff is amazing and sweet! You have to order everything at the bar and also choose your own table. Last time my boyfriend got the Hop Scholar burger with tots and I got the Brisket nachos. The food was so yummy!

Google
Fantastic! Great beers on tap and some eclectic bottles like Chimay. Solid bar food line-up with something for everyone. Pet Friendly. Indoor. Yes indoor. Great place to watch a game and bring your furry friend.

Google
A little bit of a haul for us as we live in Tomball and pass several brewpubs on the drive over, but well worth it. Great tap selection, quality service and friendly neighborhood regulars to make new friends with. A whiskey bar and Asian bowls to boot!

Ash K.

Yelp
I went there the other evening and it was low-key maybe on a Tuesday night, they sent me a birthday coupon and I decided to go. I called ahead ask them specials and if they had food. They told me there their specials when the ashes are playing, dollar off Saint Arnold beer or maybe two dollars. They also told me that they have a restaurant in the place called Dragon Ball Z, I've had it previously, but didn't know they were affiliated with them. A lot of people seem to be eating that night and enjoying the great craft beers! I forgot my bartender's name because I'm horrible with names, but he was a very sweet, younger, energetic younger guy!! Found out he was the same nice person and I actually talked on the phone with before I went there. This is my second or third time to be there, and I will definitely go back; especially to visit their special Spk Ez for the first time! Great hospitality AS ALWAYS !!! PLEASE ur local neighborhood bars/establishment

Yelp
Service is quick and friendly. Great ambiance and the drinks are on point, every time. The food is actually good too. Definitely a place worth visiting.

Yelp
Stopped into Hop Scholar Ale House for lunch to try them out as my wife and I had heard that they had good food and beer. We really had a mixed experience during our visit. The guy behind the bar was very nice and friendly and we can not fault him at all. They did have a good selection of craft beer to choose from and left us sample some so we could make our decision. Unfortunately, they were out of a lot of the beers that we really wanted to try. We made our decision and asked about the food. Apparently the great burgers that was part of another business within Hop Scholar had left and now they had Dragon Bowel Noodle Bar to serve meals. We ordered a few items as we were hungry and their food wasn't bad, but when I go to and Ale House, I kind of expect bar food and not an Asian Noodle Bar. Very disappointing to say to the least. Yes, our beer was good. Yes the egg roll, calamari and crab Rangoon was very good but Hop Scholar Ale House didn't feel like a true Ale House/pub atmosphere to us but I will let you stop in and make your own decision on this.

Yelp
very friendly vibe good craft beer selection and food but didn't order any food .. busy plaza but they do have private parking ... locals come there and not a bad spot by any means to enjoy a beer
google avatar

Jason W.

Yelp
This is my favorite beer bar for the ambience, impressive draft selection, friendly bartenders and cocktails for my wife on the same tab from Sabbatical connected next door. I miss their old kitchen though. They now host Dragon Bowl C, and it doesn't hit for me. I tried a few things over two visits. I thought maybe it's just me, but my wife didn't like it and our friends we go here with often didn't like it either so now I'm sad because we'll probably be going somewhere else with less beers but better food.
google avatar

Amy S.

Yelp
Unfriendly staff who are only interested in the regulars. It's an odd vibe where some things seem snobby and other things are what you would expect in a dive bar (the menu has some pretty fancy gastropub type items, but if you want a glass of water you get it yourself out of a dirty orange plastic cooler). We had trouble even getting anyone's attention at the ordering area and the bartender acted like we were a nuisance. Seemed to have plenty of time to talk to people he knew at the tables though. It's too bad because they did seem to have a decent beer selection, but no one in our party was interested in returning.

Yelp
I'm new to Houston, and found Hop Scholar Ale House on Yelp after searching "beer and food" in my zip code. I may have simple tastes, but this was exactly what I was looking for. I was happy to see the Dog Fish Head 60 Minute and Bell's Oberon, two of my favorite beers on draft. And the Gyro Pita did not disappoint, as it included sun dried tomatoes and char grilled lamb that felt unique, yet familiar to a classic menu option I judge a bar and grill by not only the food and drink but also the relationship the staff has with their regulars, and it's clear that the locals love to come by and gab with the staff for good reason. The overall atmosphere was welcoming, and I look forward to my next visit!

Yelp
Good beer selection w/lots of high abv options and reasonable price for the 4-taster flight. Very friendly staff and informative on the beer offerings. I was heartbroken that their kitchen closed at 11pm because I wanted to one of their artisan hot dogs, as they all looked delicious! However, one of their regulars showed up with a bag of mystery tacos and shared w/everyone at the bar! Seriously, this Taco Angel was sent from heaven as there are not a lot of late night food options nearby! This was a great find in the North Houston area and next time I am in town I will hopefully be able to stop in before the kitchen closes.

Yelp
(For Sabbatical) I came for a drink. I found an experience. I left elevated, and with a new favorite drink. Bartender's suggestion. (Penicillin) great atmosphere. Above and beyond service. Let the drink refresh your soul. Let this bartender be your guide. (Please get some Creme de Menthe, I want to try your grasshopper)

Yelp
The food is great! Love the atmosphere and friendliness of the staff. We always have great service.

Yelp
So happy we stumbled upon this joint. Don't be fooled by its strip mall location. This place offers a super cozy atmosphere with friendly service and an amazing menu of craft beers, cocktails, and seriously tummy bites. Today was our 2nd visit and happily brought friends to share the experience. Will be back for sure! 1st visit: Hop Burger was very juicy and flavorful. And HUGE. Side of tater tots and honey siracha Brussel sprouts. Pineapple & Mango Mimosa Austin East Ciders 2nd: spicy garlic parmesean @ honey Sriracha boneless wings, cheese curds, and pretzel bites with queso. Nitro Burboun Old Fashioned & Yellow Rose Lone Pint

Yelp
Great beer. Great bartenders. Great food. Great bingo. Will definitely be back, atmosphere is super cool. They usually have some sort of games or comedy. Lots of fun and great staff as well.

Melony B.

Yelp
We love this place. Tons of beers to choose from or you can go round the back to the speakeasy and have a cocktail. I think their cocktails are the absolute BEST!! Bartenders suggest drinks based on what you like. Their Mexican firing squad is a must try!! We had some of their appetizers And they are good as well.

Yelp
The beer here is amazing. But I have to let you know about the service provided by the bartender (gentlemen with longer hair) was quite rude. I'm from out of town so I didn't know the menu was online. Well, it is such an inconvenience for it to be SOLEY online--and they have no descriptions whatsoever of the beer that they have on tap in the brewery. Seems absolutely silly to me! The bartender kept making smart-ass remarks about the menu when I asked for a menu of beer. He was like, "you're holding it." It seems just common sense to have the menu with brief descriptions up for new customers to view. The bartender continued being sarcastic when I was asking about the various beers. I asked about getting a flight and had decided on a particular beer, when I told him the one taster I wanted, he rudely stated "we don't sell tasters that way, you can't break apart the flight!!" The tone was so off putting and disrespectful!! I would totally recommend their beer. They have a wide variety of beers from spurs to stouts and all I tasted were absolutely wonderful. But sadly, the customer service is lacking. I'll be back in the future, as I expect to visit my friends here many more times--hopefully service will be more friendly and understanding. And hopefully they put up a list of beers with brief descriptions for their customers.

Yelp
Just a chill place to hang and converse with friends... they have a great pineapple cider on tap.
google avatar

Mr E.

Yelp
Beer was horrible warm no cold mugs! Beer is to expensive! The place is way to small, No Bud Light draft or Miller draft beer? It's pretty sad when someone copies someone else's logo idea! They copied the Hooters logo: see attachment!

Ian M.

Yelp
Not overly friendly. Seems to cater to their regular crowd, and not too welcoming to "outsiders ". Good beer selection, didn't try the food as we left after one beer.
google avatar

Stephen W.

Yelp
The food here is even better than the beer. And the beer is great. Been here many times and tried lots on the menu haven't been disappointed yet.
google avatar

Jackie G.

Yelp
The staff is always great. The rotating selection of beer is on point. The restrooms are always clean. Its a great hang out place. My husband loves to come here any chance he gets. The only negative I can think of is that this place deserves to be bigger. They are so loved that this place gets packed sometimes. I am super glad to hear that they are opening a kitchen later this week. I had the privilege of being one of the lucky few to try a sampling of their menu. Everything I tried was real delicious. You can tell that every sauce was made in house. So yummy.
google avatar

Dawna S.

Yelp
The weekly rotated brews are a superb collection with something that should favor everyone. I've enjoyed stouts, sours, loggers, and ciders there. The food is not the best I've ever had, but decent for bar food. We have enjoyed the Reuben, pretzel, fried mushrooms, and the kimchi fries.
google avatar

Andres F.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, good beer selection. Check the whisky bar "hidden" in the back of the restaurant
google avatar

Scott L.

Yelp
It's a bar. A beer bar. In a strip mall. They are not a brewery. Not a Beer Garden. Chips for snacks. 3 x Tv sports. Simple place for slightly seedy hipsters.
google avatar

Navid S.

Yelp
Perfect service. Awesome beers. Nice staff. I will definitely come here more when I am in the neighborhood.
google avatar

Yelp
Fridays here suck. There is a huge group of inconsiderate people from Exxon that just stand in the way of everyone and refuse to sit at open tables. Any other day of the week it is a chill spot. Just don't show up when the Exxon people are here and think they own the place. But, Exxon Jeff is cool.

Gregg A.

Yelp
We ordered take out from here and were very happy with the food, my sons all had burgers which were huge, the fries were perfect and the chicken my wife and I had was delicious! We went early to have a beer while waiting for the food and that turned out to be a great idea. I had a blood orange cider and was hooked, went back over the weekend a had a few more. The gal working the bar was an absolute treat to talk with, she was friendly and helped my wife and i decide on what beers to try. We will absolutely be going back!
google avatar

Yelp
Its been on my list and finally tried it. It was Saturday, and while busy, not super crowded. Let's start with the food. Overall, very solid. When you consider its bar food, its amazing. The jalapeno bacon was something else. Its served as part of the BLT (which comes with 10 slices of bacon), but should be part of pretty much every dish. Gyro fries were very good as well, and the burgers were nice. In the end, you're probably here for the beer, as you should be. Only recommendation is to go to the website and review the menu ahead of time. Its up to date and is really an impressive selection. Also, good to mention that they have a nice selection of board games to play with while you hang out. Love this place and will be back. One last nice thing, while its not for kids, they are cool with well behaved kids.

Yelp
Went in a Saturday around 7:30. Small place. If you don't sit at the bar, you have to wait at the bar to order. No servers or cocktail server. Ordered two beers and sat down to look at the food menu on the wall. Went back up to order, bartender was busy with friends at the end of the bar. Waited about 5 minutes before another guest told her I was waiting. They Have lots of hot dog options, so we went for the kimchi and chili dog. Mistake. The dogs are the size of Hebrew national hot dogs. Tiny with hardly any toppings. The best thing was the bun it came in. Got up to go to the restraint when another table asked me for a box Togo. Politely told them I don't work there and they immediately got up and left, leaving all of their food behind. Went back to the counter. Paid for our food and two beers. About $45. Went behind the bar to their secret place called Sabbatical Spirits. Even worse. $40 for two drinks. They are not welcoming, it's very small, very quiet, and very expensive.

Yelp
We ate dinner nearby and decided we wanted to keep the night going. We stopped at a sports bar so we could play pool and relax but little did we know, smoking is still allowed in Montgomery county establishments. We decided to check this place out and we are so glad we did. It smelled nice and clean in here without a hint of smoke. We thought we were going to be limited to craft beers, which is perfectly fine by me, but the ladies were in the mood for some mixed drinks. Luckily, they have a new spot connected by a hallway called Whiskey Sabbatical that has an impressive collection of whiskey from around the world. The guys decided to stick to beer, while the girls had Mai Tais, and we were able to bring our beers into the whiskey bar. The beer selection was pretty awesome because they have something to please any beers snobs palette. I consider myself a beer snob and I loved the beers I tried. Back to the whiskey, the mixed drinks were delicious and we even tried some high end Japanese whiskey straight and it was phenomenal. We will definitely come back here if we are in the area. It was a nice, unassuming establishment that made for a relaxing evening!

Yelp
Went for our first visit this Sunday for brunch man the food was yummy and the beers were cold!! Definitely going back for brunch again soon!
google avatar

Michelle B.

Yelp
Since writing my review Hop has started to serve their own food. Guys, it's so good. The different types of loaded fries are awesome and you can sub tots if you'd like. I don't go as often as I used to so when I do end up there I find the faces behind the bar unfamiliar. But they are always nice and I never have issues with service. Another addition that I really enjoy is the art gallery that occupies the hallway that connects Hop to the whiskey bar next door. I appreciate their support of the arts in our community! Years later this is still one of my fav "go-to" places to hang out or to bring a friend.
google avatar

Gabby A.

Yelp
They need a beer menu ! The lounge area is small. Parking is tight. My problem with hop scholar is the people working behind the bar are snobs. I'll ask for a simple recommendation and what I get back as a response is sassy beer snob attitude. I do like the beer selection though.however I rather go somewhere else that won't make me feel like an idiot.
google avatar

Robert A.

Yelp
This place sucks. They have no menu for their beers. You have to do the work yourself and find the beer you want, but don't worry more than likely they will be out if it. See they don't care about customers so they don't log or write what they are out of. Wait staff has bad attitudes & will not help you unless you come to counter. Then they want a tip!!! Lol Go to Tapped it's much better
google avatar

Alexander D.

Yelp
Good food decent vibe. Giving a one star due to the 20% policy tip. My server spent maybe 40s with me since I set at the counter bar. When I asked for the check my options to tip where all over 20% ( 20%, 25% and 30% ). Really!!! I usually tip 18% and over if I get good service, please don't force me to tip you 20% or more for service at the counter. The person at Starbucks this morning spent almost the same amount of time serving me, was nicer and probably no one is tipping him......
google avatar

Albert M.

Yelp
Slowly becoming my favorite bar in the area. I love that they have to keep their menu online because they change out their beer so often. I get to try new things and the bartenders are always great about recommending new ones based on my taste. I keep bringing friends here, because it's a very relaxing atmosphere and is fun! Next thing on my list is to try the food next time, so I will be back!
google avatar

Devin-Scott B.

Yelp
Great place to try new brews and relax. The staff is awesome and knows their product.
google avatar

Tina G.

Yelp
The beer list at this spot is probably the best in Spring, TX. I've never had the food, but looks like a good menu. Run a lot of beer themes and promos, which I love!
google avatar

Alison C.

Yelp
Super cozy bar serving GOOD CRAFT BEER located down sucky Rayford road. Yup. I said it: Rayford sucks! Too much traffic for only two lanes and the several large neighborhoods farther down. I have not been to Hop Scholar enough because of this. The drive was terrible, even at night with less traffic. Alright alright: The inside is kept dark. They have mastered the balance of divey and hipster for everyone to feel welcome and still feel clean :P A long bar area showcases all of the draft and bottle choices, and you can keep updated with any changes with the phone app Tap Finder. All of the worker's favorite choices are written out (along with all any special offers). Hop has a neat concept of bring you own FOOD! Fish Place, Mario's Mexican Restaurant, and Double Dave's Pizza share a parking lot and Fish Place will even deliver the food to Hop Scholar for you. The many tables are large enough to accommodate the board games that are stacked up on a shelf by the front door for patrons to use -- and you are encouraged to bring any other games for your group to play. Dart boards line the back wall and the bathrooms are nice and clean. I really want to support a bar stepping up the game with their craft beer options -- but I THINK about going to Hop Scholar more than I actually do due to their location. If only, if only they were on my side of highway 45!

Carrie K.

Yelp
This place has great food and drinks. The bourbon old fashioned was amazing! Service was top notch and so attentive. Stop by for a cool vibe and great food and drinks!

Yelp
I like it. Recently moved my family to what can only be called Beer Town USA in Central Oregon from H town where my family has lived forever, and I have to be honest, I left drinking bud light lime and have since become a beer snob. A bit hard to come back to my beloved Texas and find proper ale houses with real craft beer. I know there are plenty of craft beers here you say, but not like in Oregon, (my small town the size of Conroe has 26 breweries alone!). Suffice it to say, you get spoiled with great water and great beer variety and imagination quickly. Anyway, back to the Hop Scholar. This place filled the bill with its interesting, low key atmosphere, good service and a plethora of craft beers. Hoppy IPAs were what I was after, and I can tell you it is not easy to get a plate of good food in this town along with a righteous IPA. (Not Goose Island or anything with a lemon or orange slice in it!!!). Was back again today. Great spot. Will go on my regular list of places to hang out and have a pint while in town.
google avatar

Yelp
Tucked away in an unassuming strip mall with minimal signage, Hop Scholar is pouring out a great selection of craft beers from around the country. It's small, it's borderline dive-y, but it's also good. They're constantly rotating what's on tap; when one keg runs out a different one is put in. It's a fantastic place to indulge your beer lust or to pick up a taste for it. Every couple weeks they'll be new beers you've never heard of before. Since the rotation is always in flux there is no set beer menu inside, though you can look up current offerings online. The bartenders are very knowledgeable about the beers and will make excellent suggestions. The kitchen is back up and running after Harvey. Though they only have a handful of dishes the food is well made and perfect for washing down with beer- quintessential bar food. I recommend the kimchi fries and the Cuban sandwich. If you're looking for a low-key, stress-free night out Hop Scholar might just be your place. They have a lot of regulars for a reason!
google avatar

Lucas A.

Yelp
This is a great spot for someone looking for local craft brews. They have a pretty decent menu too. There are also recommendations for the staff as to what they've liked if you're having trouble in picking.
google avatar

Steven G.

Yelp
Out of this, out of that Good beer selection Cozy little place Was missing something, not sure what it was. Just needs mor....umph
google avatar

Vanessa A.

Yelp
Solid little quiet bar to grab a beer or two. Clean and roomy, this place is the the perfect Saturday or Sunday to grab a beer. They have a good selection to choose from. We normally opt for a flight so we can determine what we are in the mood for and try what we have yet to! The only gripe is that you have to go to Taphunter to see what is on tap. To me, that's pretty inconvenient but that's how they do it. No food here but you can order in or grab a bite from Several places in the plaza.
google avatar

Amber M.

Yelp
It's a nice and homey bar. Nice place to sit and unwind. They have flights( 4 four ounce beers to sample ) so you can find your perfect beer. They also have an App- TapHunter that you can download to see their consistent daily change of their draft/bottle beer list
google avatar

Brett N.

Yelp
Why 5 stars? Because everything you want from your neighborhood bar. --- --- --- It's so nice for Spring to have a place like this, as opposed to a dark and smokey old school tavern with Bud/Miller/Coors on tap. It definitely feels like a trendy place inside the loop, but good for Hop Scholar to bless the suburbs with their presence. There's about 20 taps, all of which consist of high-quality craft beer, including a couple of nitro taps! I've yet to try a nitro beer that I haven't liked, so I'm a huge fan of taps designated for nitro. My favorite thing about this bar is that both times I visited, there were a fair amount of people in here, but it wasn't shoulder-to-shoulder crowded. You'd think it would be, as one of the only craft beer bars in the area, but thankfully it's not overly crowded. And with a solid patrons:tender ratio, comes very friendly service. If I lived in Spring, this might be my favorite spot in the city.
google avatar

Hugh M.

Yelp
This is a cool, new craft beer bar spot! Feels like you're at someone's house drinking. Very relaxed and friendly place. They have a strong beer selection. Mix of local and national labels...and plenty to keep a hop head like myself happy! The rotations, so far, have been very good and management is open to suggestions. Definitely a welcome addition to The Woodlands area and should have a long, fruitful existence for a craft beer bar. The staff is friendly and welcoming and the owner really loves what he is doing and it shows! I can't wait to go back again. The beer and atmosphere is what this place has in abundance. Right now there are no TVs and I think that's AWESOME! It forces people to talk to each other without the distractions. Besides... The beer is enough. If you love beer and good times you will definitely love this place! My first visit to Hop Scholar was during their soft opening a couple weeks before their grand opening, man its good to have friends who love a good beer or ale as much as I do. I swear we sampled at least a dozen new varieties that I'd never even heard of, but they went down so smooth I was seriously enjoying every single one. I've been back a few times with the same friends and to fill up my growler., each time I'm welcomed and good times happen. I'll definitely be back for more.
google avatar

Steven M.

Yelp
Horrible service every time I have been. Lack of management and food items is stupid crazy!!! Until they get a good cook in the kitchen and their stuff together I won't be trying again.
google avatar

Trey C.

Yelp
Hot damn! This is a fantastic place to grab a craft beer. Their selections are always changing and the tenders are very knowledgeable about them. If you get stumped picking, and it's likely you will, just ask them and they will serve you right up. This place is a little bit of a hidden gem so be prepared. Thirsty? Stop here!
google avatar

Travis F.

Yelp
Great beer selection and good food. Most of the bartenders have been great. The menu has changed around quite a bit, and they are now operating their own smokehouse on site.
