10 Quintessential Cheap Eats Dishes in NYC | Eater NY

"Puffy, chewy, and steamed, the bao at Hop Shing are stark white, shaped like a flattened ball (sometimes with a pucker on top), and filled with red pork that can be sweeter or more savory depending on preference; the bao’s Cantonese origin and leavening by both yeast and baking powder give it its unique texture, and everyone agrees that bigger is better." - Robert Sietsema

Google
Chicken lo mein was bland, very dry. I tried putting a lot of sauce on it but it didn’t help. Their prices are good (but then again it could be the lunch price) but I guess you get what you pay for. I wish they had a small size, it only comes in one size. Unfortunately I’ll have to throw the rest away. I’ll show a picture of what’s left (what I will have to throw out) because it’s too much food (and it wasn’t very good).

Kameron W.

Google
As much as I hate leaving bad reviews I have to be honest.. i got the sesame chicken I took a chance and the food wasn’t good. The rice was dry sticky and the chicken had no flavor at all. I ate 5 bites and threw it out. I Went based on the mixed reviews I felt like I had to see for myself. I did get a shrimp egg roll that was good.. but to be honest I wouldn’t come back at all.. the cashier was nice though..

Google
At times I have at here several times a week. Honestly I've only had the Large Mongolian chicken/beef. It's a huge portion enough for 3. It's $11.91, Today I decided to try a 10pcs wings and Chicken fried rice, along with my usual Mongolian chicken. Lately it's been a bit spicy but still good. Not sure what happened but I ended up paying $27.09, when I asked for a receipt and explanation the Young lady was very dismissive. She did provide me a receipt for $24.00,she added the fact I had 2 can sodas which were apparently $3.00. This is a much smaller portion than I usually get too. Soo...idk maybe I'll try a new Chinese restaurant in the area next time.

Google
You can't beat the price! The general Tso chicken. Could have used more sauce and wasn't spicy at all. The fried rice also tasted like the yellow bag rice you buy at the store. Egg drop soup could have had more salt but that was an easy add myself.

River T.

Google
Been going here for about a year now and go just about once a week due to its proximity. Food is always ready within 10 minutes, always tasty, affordable, and very generous portions to where I feel they are doing us a favor sometimes. If you live in the area, here’s your Chinese food fix!

Perfect

Google
I love Hop Shing, overall consistent. Today I ordered sesame chicken with shrimp fried rice. The chicken was packed, they didn’t skimp & great flavor. However they only put 5 small shrimp on top the rice. Shrimp are dry and have an imitation crab consistency, not real shrimp so I personally don’t recommend. Especially because it’s an up charge of $1.50 better without it.

Google
Classic. Been coming here since I was a kid and it has been consistently good the whole time. Great folks who run the place, you can tell they really care.

Google
Hands-down this is the best Chinese takeout restaurant in Atlanta! No joke services always great, they are fast, fresh, quality ingredients and absolutely delicious not to mention it’s a family owned business! Look at the picture the fried rice have you ever seen shrimp that large in fried rice and vegetables there at that fresh? Also in the same plaza if you go there stop at this coffee shop that’s in the pendant one of my absolute favorites so delicious and their customer service is out of this world!

Yelp
You can count on Hop Shing to serve up some reliably good and simple Chinese food. Pro tip: Know what you want before you call. Don't call undecided. Probably 99% of Hop Shing's business is take-out. I'm not sure I've ever seen anyone use one of the tables inside the restaurant. While doing the take-out thing, you'll notice they're always doing a LOT of take-out business. You may be on hold for a moment or two, but once they get your order, Hop Shing cooks up everything fresh and hot. I always place my orders via the phone, and they're always generally ready in about 10-min (conveniently the time it takes to drive there). My food is always double-wrapped in a paper bag that sits inside a plastic bag. This ensures everything is warm and tasty even after I drive it home.

Kathleen R.

Yelp
Me and my family have been going here for years since I was probably 14? We recently visited last month since moving away a couple of years ago, and I was pleasantly surprised the owner recognized me. I love this place, the food is always steaming hot, quick, and delicious. My go to is the chicken and broccoli with white rice and a side of wings if I'm feeling super hungry! It's also family owned, which is super nice supporting local businesses.

Yelp
Service was very polite and food came out quickly. The steamed dumplings and egg rolls were very tasty, but unfortunately the Kung Pao was mediocre with huge chunks of mainly celery, and the Sweet & Sour Chicken bland. The major disappointment though was the fried rice. It tasted old. I would return for soup, dumplings and eggrolls though.

Yelp
If you are a New Yorker and you are missing the Chinese food we have had access to, this is the spot. I mean everything down to the rice!!
google avatar

Simone A.

Yelp
The people are friendly, and that's the one star. I'm not sure there is anyone Asian working in this Asian restaurant and none of the dishes had traditional Asian flavors. Even the fried rice was not fried. It looks like steamed yellow rice with some vegetables thrown in, and no egg. I can't understand how this restaurant has such a high score. And their score rating was a low C. yikes!
google avatar

Sharon C.

Yelp
Being Chinese with a Chinese food Chef for a Dad, this is good Chinese takeout!! Hands down my favorite in ATL & I've tried quite a few. Having never been much of a Chinese takeout girl, Hop Shing is the one spot I consistently vouch for and recommend. I've tried more items than I can count but love getting the Triple in Garlic Sauce, Dumplings, and the classic beef with broccoli kind of dishes, OH & Crab/Cream Cheese Rangoons. This spot is a bang for your buck & totally worth the drive. It's the spot I recommend to anyone looking for Chinese takeout & I promise they love it as much as I do & you will too!

Yelp
If you're looking for NJ Chinese food, you've found the right spot! Food is always made to order!

Yelp
SMELLY RICE???? as soon as I opened the box the smell of bad moldy rice hit my face. zero intentions to accommodate or make the better.
google avatar

Eryn H.

Yelp
I don't feel like Atlanta has good Chinese food but hop shing is one of the few good ones! All their food is good but my favorite is their shrimp egg foo young and fried wings. But literally everything I had on the menu has been good. They are normally busy so call your order in and it will be ready when you get there. They are quick and food is always fresh

Cynthia E.

Yelp
Lemon pepper wings very over seasoned. Had General TSO chicken and my boyfriend had sesame chicken both had no flavor and the rice tasted like it had been sitting there all day. We went around 2-3pm. Expensive lunch for a poor taste. People were friendly

Yelp
Been coming here for years. They are definitely a staple for my family! I honestly haven't really cared for Chinese food in the past but they have converted me! I love the yummy Singapore noodle! Honestly you can't go wrong with anything on their menu. They have amazing prices, great variety, and they turn the food around lightening fast!

Yelp
This is one of my favorite hidden spots. Anytime I'm in the area I purposely save my appetite so I can stop by. The location is very clean. The food is reasonably priced and everything I've ordered thus far has been good. The location has changed recently. There's no longer a dine in option (current as of 03/05/21) so plan for takeout. If you're in the mood for some good Chinese food that's not too greasy, well flavored, and overall satisfying, you've gotta go.
google avatar

Latoya G.

Yelp
Very good Chinese-American takeout. We had the egg rolls, boneless spare rib tips, chicken wings, chicken lo mein, and chicken mei fun. Sidebar: I'm from NY and it's been difficult to find decent Chinese take out in ATL. I'll be returning to try other dishes.
google avatar

Deanna H.

Yelp
This Chinese takeout use to be very good but not currently. I order KuFu chicken, fried rice, two egg rolls and vegetable lo mein. The good had no taste. Very bland. The chicken had no spices, the rice was fried on the cooker with veg. Oil. No taste. The vegtable lo.mein had no taste, very bland. This is Chinese food at its worst. Go to buford highway for good Chinese food. They must have hired cooks with no experience in cooking good chinese food. Don'tt waste your money
google avatar

Yelp
We ordered from Hop Shing on a Friday afternoon. The order took approximately 15 mins to prepare and it was ready when I arrived to pick the order up. This was my first time trying Hop Shing. It is a very good Chinese American restaurant. The food is cooked very well and it's not overly greasy. I ordered the lemon pepper wings and shrimp fried rice. My girlfriend ordered the orange chicken and lo mein. The wings were nice and crispy and were seasoned in a buttery lemon pepper seasoning. The shrimp fried rice was good and had all the normal components of mixed veggies and eggs. The ratio of shrimp to the amount of rice was quite fair. I definitely felt satisfied. My girlfriend really enjoyed her orange chicken and lo mein. She said that it was cooked perfectly. The chicken was edible and the bread was not too crunchy. It was perfectly balanced. Overall, Hop Shing was a very good experience. I'd definitely go back and try it again.

Yelp
Hop Shing is the best Chinese food that I've had in Atlanta! I was having some serious cravings during quarantine, but they were temporarily closed until recently. I called ahead and ordered and in ten minutes it was ready! When I went to pick up my food I noticed that there was a wall and glass barrier in front of the cash register and the area where seating used to be available. So dining in isn't an option for them right now. I ordered chicken lo mein with shrimp and broccoli and it was all delicious. The broccoli was fresh and crunchy and the chicken and shrimp lo mein was cooked to perfection. The portion sizes are pretty big for the amount you pay so I was able to blissfully snack on my meal through out the night : )

Yelp
I had a craving for Chinese and I always come here to get my fix! Super friendly and Fast! Plexiglass in place with microphones. I always order before coming for faster service but it was kinda cool to see that! Always fresh!

You M.

Yelp
Their health scores have only been going down every time. Years ago they always had an A. Something is not right here anymore and their attitude is very bad about it. Went from 88 to 78 to now 73. Looks like nobody there cares anymore.

Yelp
Closest you'll get to New York Chinese food in Atlanta. Best food ever! I've been coming here for yearsssss!
google avatar

Yelp
Solid sesame chicken and big portions. Recently moved and discovered this place. Always seems busy which is usually a good sign.
google avatar

Shannon E.

Yelp
I just came home with the Moo Goo Gai Pan fried rice combo. It is DELICIOUS!!! I am so happy with my food!! The egg roll is great!! The wonton soup is also amazing!! I will be back often!! Portions were amble and wait time was minumim.
google avatar

Elaine F.

Yelp
I ordered the sweet and sour shrimp combo and it was not anything like the photo. It was absolutely terrible and they should remove it from the menu. I took it back for a refund as it was impossible to eat. Hard pancake pieces of batter with little pieces of shrimp inside! No thank you! The shrimp egg foo young is pretty good sometimes, not consistently. The end.

Parnian V.

Yelp
I docked a star because their combos are limited to one carb and one entree; not ideal as my favorite attribute of Chinese takeout is the ability to mix and match. But the quality is pretty good; definitely ordering two dishes from now on.

Sabria A.

Yelp
I tried the shrimp fried rice and added egg, it was decent. After adding soy sauce and duck sauce it was pretty good
google avatar

Candace D.

Yelp
One of my Chinese takeout go to's. For some reason it can be hard to find good takeout in atlanta but hop shing has the variety and the portion size. The special is a great pricing!
google avatar

Matthew D.

Yelp
Hop Shing is my go to Chinese restaurant. I go there often whenever I'm craving Chinese or just an extremely busy day. Their food is always fresh to made and ready right away. You rarely have to wait for your food to be made. I haven't fully explored their menu but from the few different items I have ordered it's always delicious !

Yelp
What a find! I was drawn to this place because of it's close proximity to a coffee shop I've been fiending to try for weeks, and to Publix. Not every day you can kill three birds with one stone (sorry peta), and it was a real success! The restaurant is located in a plaza with plenty of parking, and service is pretty quick. I ordered the Mongolian Beef combo (a little under $9!) to go, which came with an egg roll and fried rice. This place definitely falls into the "shitty Chinese" category (aka inauthentic) but it is one of the best shitty Chinese places I've been to in a long while. The beef wasn't overly tenderized, there was a good ratio of beef to bell pepper to onion, and the ratio between rice and stir fry was perfect! And the egg roll was better than most, too. All in all, a very satisfying experience.

Marlo R.

Yelp
Not Boston Chinese but the best place I found in and around Atlanta- cannot find a place that really has the Chinese food I grew up to love like boneless fried chicken with brown gravy or sweet and sour with real sauce carrots onions and bell peppers not some red sauce on side - they will let your order any spicy dish without the heat so that's good !! They're a 3.9 and I will return

Kenith L.

Yelp
Pretty good food service could use some work I will double check your order they just might get it wrong. It's happened twice so I'm cutting my losses here
google avatar

Alyssa A.

Yelp
Fellow former New Yorker here - Hop Shing is my JAM. I think nobody understands how hard it is to find some good Chinese food in Atlanta. Like it is really really hard. However; this place is IT! Especially if you're looking for some good chicken wings and fried rice? OOOOUUUWEEE. This is the right place! Theres one other Chinese place I go to but this is closer to me and I have no regrets every time. And the people are nice which is also a plus. If you're thinking of stopping in stop thinking and just do it.
google avatar

Monét G.

Yelp
Their egg drop soup and fried (whole) chicken wings are delicious!! Things I didn't like: Egg foo young with shrimp - no ma'am! The sauce it comes with tasted like a curry base. It was not good whatsoever. The shrimp were overcooked as well. I also ordered the thin clear noodles, which were decent, but it was still missing something. I'd come back just for soup and wings. Their rice looks good from what I saw (brown and looked flavorful), but I'm skeptical.... lol
google avatar

Reyna C.

Yelp
If your looking for some classic tasting chinese food then this is the spot. I've been in the search for some good soul chinese food, not the upscale resturant type. But the stuff you get from someones mom's kitchen. I got the shrimp and broccoli with lo mein combo as well as the boneless ribs with fried rice comobo. The portions are big for the price your paying. I will say normally when i get shrimp from chinese places the shrimps are small or you only get like 3-4 shrimps, but here the shrimps are big and come with a good amount. Also, the combos came with egg rolls which i normally dont care for but these were a bit sweet with the perfect balance of savory. We also got the cheese wontons with the sweet and sour sauce, a great start to the meal! Count me to come back again!
google avatar

Elijah G.

Yelp
Just ordered the orange chicken with fried rice and an eggroll OMG it is so so good the best Chinese food I've had in a very very long period of time very fast service it was like I couldn't stop eating it great food will be back

Liza A.

Yelp
Absolutely love hop shing! My go-to place! The food is always incredible and the staff is so kind. Definitely recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
Very good value and delicious food will return. Favorite dishes include vegetable fried rice with tofu and vegetable lomein noodles. Very quick service!
google avatar

Ray F.

Yelp
I always forget that Hop Shing in the Publix shopping center. I had serious craving for vegetable low mein. I didn't want to go to the takeout restaurant down the street from me. Glad I remember that Hop Shing was not far away. The veggie spring roll and vegetable low mein was pretty good. It definitely satisfied my craving and left me wanting more. Good food and good service...unlike competitors in the area.
google avatar

Cob L.

Yelp
I've tried all of the Chinese restaurants within 5 miles of my place and this is the best one. They give generous portions, have a big menu, and the food tastes great. I recommend the rib tips. I tried to get takeout this week and it looks like they are closed because of the virus. I hope they come back soon.
google avatar

Marcus A.

Yelp
Being a Northern East Coast native from Connecticut, my expectations of Chinese food are pretty high (or low depending on who you ask). I lived in Chicago and Houston before relocating to ATL. Both Chicago & Houston missed the ball on good, cheap, greasy Chinese takeout that reminded me of back home. Finding Hop Shing proved that Atlanta was the perfect choice for me. The look and feel of the restaurant is exactly what I missed all these years. They have everything I love from shrimp egg foo young, chicken wings & fries to my beloved Sweet & Sour chicken. The service is prompt and the food is delicious. A top tier choice for Chinese takeout by far!
google avatar

Sophia A.

Yelp
WHEN I TELL YOU THIS PLACE IS BOMB OH MY GOODNESS! I'm originally from New York and the food up there is amazing especially the Chinese take out & I've been in Atlanta for over 5 years and have not been able to find a Chinese take out spot that can compare, UNTIL NOW!! This place is exactly what you're looking for when you think of Chinese take out. My friend and I got the shrimp and broccoli with lo mein combo, the boneless rib with fried rice combo and the cheese wontons. They were all to die for!!!! The combo plates came with egg rolls and I was shocked by how good those were too! I normally don't like egg rolls either, but these were so delish. Best I've ever had to be honest! The flavor is amazing, the portions are great for the prices! I'm so glad that I found this place. Definitely becoming a regular here soon enough!
google avatar

Ebony A.

Yelp
FINALLY, I've found my go to Chinese spot! I have been living in Brookhaven for 2 years and never even noticed it was there! It's in plaza with Publix and you can park anywhere. They also deliver. Food is affordable. They have a lunch special for like $6-8 dollars, can't beat that. And let me tell you...honey it's good. FOOD: I ordered the braised wings with shrimp fried rice and egg roll to go. If I can't eat the egg roll, I can't eat the food...so Kudosssss to hop, hands down, best egg roll I've had on this side of town. The braised wings were cooked perfectly and the sauce was yummy. Wish I asked for more sauce on the side. Shrimp fried rice was seasoned well and tasty. I will be back! I'll be taking my mom there next week.

Yelp
Okay as a New Yorker, I have been on the SEARCH for some good chinese food chicken. And I don't think people understand how dear to the heart it is for a New Yorker, especially ones from Brooklyn, to find some good Chinese fried chicken and some fries, or some fried rice, but it's real. I have been in Atlanta for 6 years and I have only found one other chinese food spot that was really good. However it was not perfect because it was slightly overpriced. However, Hop Shing has finally reach my standards in terms of chinese food spots. Their fried chicken is POPPIN. When I tell you I go there almost every other Friday and order me fried wings n fries with some ketchup, hot sauce, and bbq sauce!? I be in there! Their fried wings are perfectly salted and they give you a lot of fries. The portion size is perfect and the price is reasonable. They are my piece of NY that I miss so much. And they're open decently late for Atlanta. Do I wish they closed at 12? I do, but I ain't gonna complain about their time because people still gotta live their life. Now as I'm writing this, I realized I have not tried the only other thing I ever try from chinese spots, which is sesame seed chicken, but I will definitely get on that and update this review. But for what I search for in chinese shops, they provide to perfection. Please understand that I only vouch for their chicken, nothing else because I haven't tried it. However, if you looking for some good chinese fried chicken, this is your place. As for parking, there is ample parking, so they cover all the bases. They get a A+ and trust in my book.
google avatar

Hesham F.

Yelp
I kid you not- I have been eating from this place since I was a sophomore in high school. I also am not joking when I say that their sesame chicken has been the constant all those years! Fried rice, white rice, egg roll, no egg roll, wings, no wings- whatever your fancy. Those are my usual suspects. I am happy to make this claim and know it would easily win; THIS PLACE CRANKS OUT THE BEST SESAME CHICKEN IN ATLANTA. PERIOD. You're welcome.

Taylor J.

Yelp
Literally the most NYC style Authentic Chinese foodd ! My food was Amazing Got : Shrimp & Broccoli in Garlic Sauce and it was AmaZing ! Just wish my chicken wings were smaller

Yelp
I was reluctant to order from Hop Shing because it's such a tiny space, the typical American-Chinese takeout spot with no real dining area. But I was craving American-Chinese, so I stopped in... and I have now found my go-to when I want cheapo American-Chinese food. Food -- we ordered general tso's chicken ($8.95) sweet and sour shrimp entree and not the combo ($7.15), Mongolian beef entree and not combo (8.95), 4 pc whole chicken wings ($5.25), and a small egg drop soup ($1.95). Portion size is awesome for the price, and everything was generally really good except the general tso's chicken. Because the batter is so thick relative to the chicken inside of it, the dish gets very spongey with a horrible texture and very little chicken. The sweet and sour shrimp (when you order the entree and not the combo!) has thicker batter but it's so crispy because the sauce comes on the side. I think the combo platter for this dish does not have sauce on the side though. Our favorite was definitely the sweet and sour shrimp entree! Runner up was the whole chicken wing, super crispy. Service -- orders are taken quickly, and prepared quickly, just the way takeout spots should be. There does seem to be a heavy dinner time rush for people ordering their meals to-go.

Yelp
I really love the food I have been going to this place more that 6 years the lady that works there is nice: the food is over all just good
google avatar

Yelp
This is my favorite American style Chinese food restaurant in the Atlanta area reminds me of the NYC Chinese restaurant. The food is good and they are reasonably priced Customer service could use some work but the food is very delicious

Yelp
Just tried today for first time and we loved ! We had chicken wings, Mongolian shrimp and beef lo mein. Good price , good amount of food and quick service. Definitely coming back!

Jessica M.

Yelp
I tried this restaurant for the first time recently and it was just okay. I called ahead and asked specifically if the spring and egg rolls had mushrooms in it and I was told "no." When I got home and bit into the egg roll, it was loaded with mushrooms so I threw them out, which I was not happy about. I ordered chicken veggie fried rice, minus mushrooms, but when I got there, they forgot the actual chicken. They offered to make me a new one, but I decided to just take my order as is. The veggies in the rice had absolutely NO seasoning so it wasn't the best. I also ordered wings, extra crispy, and they were actually really good. Overall, it was an OK experience, but I probably won't drive another 20 mins again to get this food.

Yelp
I am sick and tired of Chinese restaurants that list a well-know dish but serve up something else claiming "that's the way we make it".
