I must start out by saying I am very grateful for the services that Hope for the City via Central Christian Church provides to the many people who frequent their food pantry.
Their volunteers work tirelessly first thing in the morning to process the donations.
That being said, and having visited many many food banks in my life, I also need to say that food that is distributed could be improved.
Having also been to many Central Christian Church services, there are
requests for money to help this mission. I also see there are many, many lucrative sponsors on their side. More wealthy, corporate business sponsors than any other food pantry in this valley that I am aware of..
So I'm not quite sure why just recently they gave people a big box of 2-pack saltine crackers (the kind that's often seen at salad bars), some grapefruits, and various canned (BPA-lined, no doubt) goods.
I know, I know, I sound ungrateful. But again, I have other resources in the valley to compare this particular one. And it just doesn't seem to add up. Let me be clear, this has nothing to do with the individual volunteers who pass out the food. Many are elderly and just trying to help. They are the just passing on what is given. It's the people higher up in this non-profit that I wonder about.
I would like to see more transparency on their end as to what, exactly, is donated and what is purchased, if anything, to supplement the food supply. If everyone just continues to accept what's offered and not bat an eye, it makes me wonder what's really going on behind the scenes, that's all.
Thank you for letting me share.
