17 San Francisco Bay Area Restaurant Closures to Know This October 2024 - Eater SF

"The Hopland Tap on California’s North Coast has closed after six years in business, SFGATE reports. Tucked into a historic space dating back to the 19th century, the Hopland was popular for its leafy beer garden and menu of onion burgers and St. Louis-style ribs, but a series of difficult events — flooding, fires, and then the pandemic — ultimately led to the taproom’s closure, the owners wrote in a Facebook post." - Justine Jones

The Hopland Tap is a charming place at the gateway of Mendocino County. The bartenders are friendly, skilled and offered specialty drinks. Its a place that can feel like home. I enjoyed connecting with the locals and I will definitely stop by the next time I pass through Hopland.

Really excellent local bar/pub. The wings were very good, the beer selection is solid, the decor is beautiful and retro (not a ton of older solid brick places around here), the outdoor seating is plentiful and the service window to serve outside customers is a really cool touch. We’ll be back! This is a great destination bar for motorcycle rides.

One of our favorite spots! Great selection of beer and such a comfortable and welcoming vibe. Their peel and eat shrimp are fantastic. We drive over from Lake County so you know it's good.

We hosted our son’s wedding rehearsal dinner there. Cheryl and Ron were so great and easy to work with. Everyone at the party had a great time and loved Hopland Tap. The food, drinks and service was great. I could not have picked a better place. The day after the wedding we came back to Hopland with a group of 20 family members. It was a last minute decision and the party just kind of grew. When we arrived it looked like Hopland Tap had an event already going. We went to all the other restaurants and none of them would accommodate us. I walked into the Hopland Tap and was greeted with a hug from Cheryl. When I told her we had a large party and she said give me a few minutes to figure it out, but if course we can take you. We all had a great time and of course the food, drinks and service was great. I would highly recommend you stop if you are ever in the area

Hopland Tap is housed in a building that has been around since the 1880s. It is a cute little bar. The bartender was very nice--he loves his job and where he lives--in the little town of Hopland (he is a happy Bay Area transplant). The alcohol and the food prices are very reasonable--especially if you live in the Bay Area. I love the ambiance. There is lots to look at. There's a wild pig head high on the wall that would probably freak out my vegetarian friends, but it is a taste of the history of Mendocino County. (When I used to roam the hills decades ago, I ran into some wild pigs, and they weren't very friendly). There is a 420 speed limit sign that looks kinda Hippy Redneck--look at the picture I posted and see if you agree. Hopland Tap is a place to go with friends--there's a beer garden under some hops. There's even a lending library to borrow or bring books you no longer want. They have a machine to can the draft beer you want to take home. I feel a little embarrassed because I drank some of my drafted local cider, and my share of a half pound of garlicky shrimp for $13.50 before I remembered to take a photo to share. Darn! Remember to stop by if you are driving by on the 101. You can check out their website for current activities.

Just stopped to eat…. They’ve always been dog friendly. Another dog was in w couple at bar. We took a seat, dog leashed and laid on floor next to us. Brown haired women told us we needed to eat out side. Anything at all despair treatment I hate. Totally writing this place a favorite of ours off no more!

Yelp
We were attending a family anniversary party on the patio. It was a fairly warm day and inside was cool. The bartenders were quick and accommodating. The take your credit card to open a tab. The waitress was very sweet and kept things moving. They set up a great taco bar for dinner. Everything was yummy! We visit family often and will go here again.

Yelp
Hey. Alas as of November 2024 this place is closed indefinitely. They had a fantastic beer selection, solid food, live music, lovely patio. Great place for locals and visitors. They are remodeling, looks like, so maybe they'll be back in the summer? There is no other place in Hopland like this, and I'll miss it.

Yelp
You will drool over their burgers! I kid you not. Hopland Tap is seriously the best of Hopland. Excellent brews here too, but the real reason why this spot thrives is because of the exemplary service. Talk about down home and personal. You will feel like a family member and it will make you wanna come back for more. I had just finished wine tasting at a nearby tasting room and initially went to another restaurant to have dinner. The vibe was off when I walked into that other restaurant, so I left. I don't normally do that, but nobody wants to feel ignored (especially when you're about to spend money there). I walked down the street and saw that this spot was open. If you know Hopland, then you know that it's a small town with limited options. I have passed by Hopland Tap several times during my drives down 101 but hadn't ever eaten there. Damn have I been missing out! Walked in and was instantly welcomed by a group of people who were dining at a table near the entrance. I didn't know it at the time, but they were actually the restaurant owners and their friends. After telling them about what happened to me at the other restaurant, they told me to pull up a chair at their table. I wasn't expecting this at all, but I happily did. Cheryl (the owner) handed me a menu and asked me what I was drinking. After telling her what kind of beer that I normally drink, she recommended the Civilization Brewing Olompali Lager. I also ordered the 6oz basic burger. The lager was just what I was looking for. Low on the hops with subtle fruits and easy drinking. And that burger! Dear LAWD! They call it a "basic burger" but there is nothing basic about it, folks! This is one fine slab of delicious ground chuck. Seasoned up for the Gawds, thick, meaty, delicious! When I saw how thick the patty was, I was scared that it would be dry. But NOPE! These folks know how to execute 'em right. I also have to note that they grill onions into the burger! Nom nom nom! It's served on grilled ciabatta bread with your choice of melted cheese. I added avocado to it and it was so friggin' scrumptious. I chatted with Cheryl, Ron (the owner's husband), and the rest of their friends for a little while until they ended up leaving. Such a fun group of folks and seriously so humble. Most of them were other business owners in the area. I didn't learn that Cheryl and Ron were the owners until they left. I was shocked. So down to earth they were, but so are most people in this quaint town. They gave me my first beer on the house which was such a nice gesture and greatly appreciated. Ended up hanging out for a little while and talking to one of the bartenders and another patron there. It seems like everyone knows everyone here. I love the relaxed and homey environment. I was stuff by the end of the evening and didn't want to make the long drive back home. But wow, what a fun spot! Had no clue what was hiding behind these doors, and now I can't believe that it took me so long to find out. When in Hopland, you have to check out this little gem! Awesome burgers, brews, and service for sure.

Yelp
Stopped in recently on a roadtrip through, this taphouse offers a good faire for lunch options with several taps onhand. We were greeted upon entry by the bartender. Followed by the hostess who seated us promptly. There is a daily special menu as well as the standard menu. After taking a moment I opted for the chicken sandwich with tater tots. This is good sandwich selection, the portion properly sized for a lunch meal, Tender and flavorful grilled breast on a very good brioche roll with golden brown tots and lettuce, tomato and pickles. Kind and very friendly professional service. Great outside covered patio interior courtyard to sit in the shade or sun and enjoy your meal and drink. 3.5 Stars - rounded up for the great service 00781

Yelp
The place is way fun! The food is great. The guy behind the grill knows how to make a serious burger and a fried chicken sandwich. Bartenders and servers are really friendly and treat people great. Highly recommend coming here if you're in Hopland especially if there's band playing on Saturday Night.

Yelp
Great bar. Excellent choice of beer and IPA. Rock and roll atmosphere. Bands on Wednesdays.

Yelp
I have no reason to believe that this place won't be absolutely hoppin' during the summer days. We happened to roll up on a perfect weekend. Sun was shining, temperature was perfectly cool, people were smoking funny smelling tobacco that made everyone laugh a lot. Per. Fekt. They have Pliny, so I'm pretty much set. They also had some weird Sour beers for the ladies, but I don't care much for those. But if you're reading this and thinking, "F--- this guy! I LOVE SOUR BEERS!" all I'm sayin' is that they have them here! GD. Chill out. Chill out and c'mon down to Hopland Tap and get wet ;)

Yelp
Went for a coffee and serendipitously met Ron out front while he was heading in to help open the bar. We chatted for a while and he was so kind, knowledgeable and easy to talk to. We were heading up north for a few days but made sure to stop by on way back home and it didn't disappoint! The food was tasty and generous portions and there was an excellent selection of local beers which I always appreciate Thanks Ron! -Allyson and Alex

Yelp
Great pub with friendly staff and equally friendly patrons. During the summer, the patio is great. Nice place for a break from wine tasting, or just to grab a bite en route north or south of Hopland. Woman-owned, too!

Yelp
This is a cute little hole in the wall. The girls are super friendly, everyone seemed like they enjoyed being there it felt like cheers lol. We ordered a chicken sandwich with fries and a cheeseburger with onion rings. We had 2 different kinds of their light beers. Everything was so good and they were also having live music that night. We didn't stay for that cause it was a little hot and we were ready to go home to our air conditioning. We will definitely be back though. Great little place.

Yelp
Updating my review. Still the same great place. Food and service was excellent. Josh is is the Michael Jordan of chefs and the burger was fat and juicy! Jenette was good company at the bar. Try the tots. Best wishes.
google avatar

Simon D.

Yelp
The place has a typical dive bar feel to it. It's got a large selection of beers, but the staff weren't very familiar with the beers. The food was good and the chili cheese dog was the highlight.

Yelp
Delicious food, super friendly service, accommodated our very large group. We brought our Boy Scout troop on the way home from Wente Scout Reservation. They hosted ~100 of us(!) in the beer garden and it was fantastic. The cheeseburgers, barbecue chicken sandwiches, bratwursts were DELICIOUS. And for the kitchen to be able to make that many meals and still maintain high-quality was impressive. The managers and servers were so very friendly. We are grateful and we will be back!

Yelp
A nice friendly spot to stop. This is my first time on this section of HWY 101. Pulled over to check it out. A pleasant beer garden on this late afternoon (79 degrees). Food came out fast, fresh, hot and quite satisfying. Definitely glad we stopped.

Jeanie E.

Yelp
We hosted our son's rehearsal dinner in the beer garden. The food was great. The service was great. Cheryl and Rob were great and so easy to work with. We only booked part of the beer garden and ended up taking over the whole garden. We stayed way past our booked time. Everyone at the party said it was a great place loved the food and drinks. The day after the wedding we went back to Hopland with a large party for dinner. It was a last minute decision and the group just kept growing. When we arrived it looked like Hopland Tap was hosting a party in the beer garden. We went to all of the other Restaurants and none of them could accommodate us. I walk in the Tap Cheryl saw me right away and came to give him a hug. I told her We had a group of 20 and she said to give her a minute. We ended up back in the beer garden and had a great time. Of course the food was great. I would highly recommend stopping in for a drink and some food.

Yelp
Great bar and outside service. Brought friends here with our dogs. Friendly and inviting place!

Yelp
we've stopped here a couple times and it's always great. very friendly staff, dog friendly, and great food. beer selection is top shelf, and the out door dining with a cold beer on a hot day is heaven. over the years this has turned into a mandatory stop for us. thanks for being awesome!!

Yelp
We've been coming to Hopland Tap on our drives along 101 to visit family for years. A few years ago they added a patio, and it is AWESOME! It's now our favorite dog friendly place to stop for a great sandwich (burger for hubs, chicken for me) and an adult beverage. They always have Pliney on tap , dog dishes with cool water, and occasionally some live music too. Also, their fries are super tasty!! Two dog paws up!

Yelp
Honestly, I wish we would have started coming here sooner. The place is super clean, staff are friendly, food is absolutely delicious, and drinks are great. They have also set up a really fun outdoor garden for seating. No complaints, I loved it here. Can't wait to come back and try more of their menu!

Lesley K.

Yelp
Great place. Good atmosphere - very relaxed. The food was very good. Jeanette who was tending bar that day, introduced us to a new drink made with a simple syrup using lavender. Delicious. Well worth a stop.

Yelp
The ambiance is relaxing and it was a nice way to cool down on a warm afternoon. The service was great and the food was excellent! I'm a local and this is by far the best place to eat good food for a reasonable price in town.
google avatar

Yelp
Great place! Amazing beverage selection, super attentive service, awesome live music every Saturday, cozy/airy decor. Nice vibe at the bar from other customers, it's just a happy, fun place. The food rocks and prices are really reasonable. Nice outdoor area to eat and the bathroom even has diapers and baby wipes for the parents!
google avatar

Yelp
Great place to grab lunch and a drink! Must stop if you're passing through the 101. Had the burger and it was soooo good! Great draft beers to choose from. The whole staff was very friendly they even give dog treats so bring your pets lol. Can't wait to go back and try another plate.

Yelp
The food was amazing and the service was great! Andy and Julian were phenomenal and attentive to whatever we needed. The vibe was welcoming, and family friendly.

Yelp
We had a pre-wedding party at Hopland Tap the night before our wedding and it was a massive hit. Ron and Cheryl were extremely accommodating and delivered exactly what we were hoping for. They have an excellent selection of beer (Pliny the Elder on tap was a guest favorite!) and their food is very tasty. Their staff were welcoming and they set up the perfect outdoor space for our guests in their beer garden. It was the perfect way to start our wedding weekend! Whether you are just stopping by for a drink or wanting to host a larger event, I highly recommend Hopland Tap!!

Yelp
As an old fart, I have the pleasure of being able to say that I used to buy New Albion beer by the case just down the road from my family ranch in sonoma. Things change. Ranch sold, New Albion went under, and the equipment was sold... happily the equipment found a new home and the Redtail legacy was born.. sadly nothing lasts forever, and the brand moved into the deep valley where it vaporized (surprising?). Then the building sat empty. For quite awhile. Then REBIRTH! It started out slow, beer, grilled cheese... but has now budded into the reincarnation of the old Hopland Brewery. Well, close anyway. The folks there are great, providing a friendly and warm environment to enjoy wonderful beer and their fantastic selection of eats. Don't miss the shrimp! Among the upgrades, they now serve mixed drinks. Every Wednesday they have blues with Wendy DeWitt, who will rock your socks off.. or make you cry if your blue that day... Hey, it's BLUES after all... Aside from all that good, they are ideally located for anyone traveling the great serpent called 101.. the best of pit stops!! Catch it while you can...

Yelp
Such a cool place! Great location right in the center of Hopland, friendly staff, nice bar--love the bar top. They apparently just started serving limited food items and boy! was it GREAT. Li had the Southwestern Black Bean Burger (homemade)...it was tasty. Bartender had me sample a few beers...he was friendly, knowledgeable, and had good picks!! I drove out here from Atlanta GA staying in Fort Bragg for a bit. I must say, I'm looking forward to going back for their Saturday night live music. And, with the limited food menu as it is right now, can't imagine what all the goodness they'll have cooking up once they get their kitchen up and running! Thanks guys

Yelp
We've driven by this place for a few years and I've always wanted to stop, but never had the time. On Sunday 03/24, we had time and we stopped here about 130pm. It was pretty dead but a few people trickled in after we were seated. The kitchen is not yet open so there is no extensive menu past grilled cheese sandwiches, a black bean burger, and light appetizers. I had just a plain grilled cheese with pepper jack cheese, but it was a good one. Good bread, good cheese, and grilled just right. It was served with kettle chips. My husband also had a grilled cheese; tomatoes and caramelized onions were in his and he enjoyed it. The beer selection is great and predominantly local. This area has A LOT of great breweries and this taproom is a one-stop-shop for beer tasters. The workers were all very friendly, talkative, and kind. There is outdoor seating at this location.

Yelp
We were so happy to find this great little restaurant in the heart of Hopland. We realy enjoyed the tap house food. We had the chorizo grilled cheese and a sausage sandwich. Both served with kettle chips. Yummy! The staff was attentive and friendly.

S C.

Yelp
This brewpub barely has food. We wanted to like it but not interested in the meager bar food they had to offer.
google avatar

Nancy B W.

Yelp
Nice local spot, bar food and a little spare on Decor and comfortable seating. Fresh salads and great ingredients so that makes up for it. Great selection of good beers as well. Worth a stop on your way to and from. Give it a try when you have time in Hopland.

Megan T.

Yelp
I came to this cozy lil place, nestled in an adorable town called Hopland. I ordered a burger and some mozzarella sticks. The food was DELICIOUS! Cooked just right and seasoned perfectly. The server was nice and the cook even came out ( his name was Julian, very cute ) and asked if everything was to my liking. It was such a nice and warm environment, this place is a GEM! I will be returning soon. I was told about alot of the new and exciting things that are in the works, and I look forward to seeing how it works out. I recommend this place to everyone. Great food, cold drinks, and they treat you almost like family.

Yelp
This is for the NEW Hopland Tap. New owner has really jazzed up the place and the people are friendly and supernice. My wife and I rode motorcycles there the other week and I could not believe how friendly everybody was. Even people hanging outside in the yard were friendly too. We were able to go out and sit at picnic tables with the beautiful weather and drink our beers. We also ordered some hamburgers from the kitchen, and they came out absolutely delicious. There were two women working in the kitchen that day one was named Melissa can't remember the other one but she was tall. A-1 service from them both, and if I had my own business I would probably try to steal them from The Tap House.
google avatar

Cheryl W.

Yelp
Love this place! You walk in and you're warmly welcomed. From the owners to the bartenders to the waitresses to the regulars; everyone is friendly. Great beer on tap and a kitchen soon to come.

Jannette G.

Yelp
If you are a local you already know how amazing this place is. If you are driving by it's a must stop. The staff and owners are always friendly and really care. My go to order lately has been prawns and house salad. I'm gluten-free, so I can't partake, but I'm told they have a great verity of beers. I can attest to the Tap having a nice verity of ciders to choose from.
google avatar

Daragh C.

Yelp
I stopped in on my way to Fortuna... and I am so happy I did! Such friendly and attentive service. I will be back!!

Irene C.

Yelp
My husband & I stopped in this little gem on a one-day road trip up north. Super cool vibe with old brick walls and raw edged solid wood tables. We didn't EVEN realize there was a delightful beer garden outside until we mentioned something about our dogs being in the car, to which they replied: "Bring em to the garden!" So we did, where we enjoyed good pub food. (The fries are REAL, hellooo...) Oh, and did I mention a great list of beers on tap?
google avatar

Dan B.

Yelp
A welcome return to the former Hopland Tap House location. Lots of different beer offered but very limited food until their full kitchen is finished. They often have live music.

Lisa P.

Yelp
Love love the new owners! So friendly and inviting. Such a great vibe! Food is very good and great beer on tap! Thank you Ron & Cheryl.

Sean D.

Yelp
We stopped here for lunch. Had the ages Swiss and mushroom grilled cheese, tots, and southwestern burger. Food was great and gluten free friendly. They have a great beer selection also. Highly recommended. They also allowed our dog in the patio area. Will stop here again when passing thru Hopland.

Ana K.

Yelp
Fresh bar food that is consistently delicious and something for everyone, Vegetarians and gluten free alike! Great beer selection! Friendly staff and patrons! Owners Ron and Cheryl are amazing! What else needs to be said! Oh...They are dog friendly... !!!

Sara M.

Yelp
We're so excited about how great the new Hopland Tap is!! The owners are super friendly and welcoming. There are fantastic beer selections and wines available. With the new upgraded kitchen, there are many delicious food options on the menu including the best french fries and wings! Finally, there are live bands on Friday and Saturday nights that are very entertaining:)
