The Best Restaurants In Sonoma - Sonoma - The Infatuation

"This sprawling beer garden is always high on the list for casual, festive meals with friends. You’ll listen to live acoustic, roots, and indie rock (depending on the night) as you pass appetizers around one of the many reclaimed wood tables in the glass-covered patio. We love the pickle fries, the warm pretzel with beer cheese, and Korean gochujang cauliflower. The cheeseburger is loaded with crispy shallots (never skip the sweet potato waffle fries on the side), and the ahi tuna salad is a lighter but still satisfying option, and everything is better with one (or three) of their many excellent pints, brewed at their Sebastopol location. We also like to use this place for low-key date nights or post-wine tasting wind-downs." - allison green, gabi moskowitz

Google
Really cool spot and AMAZING food!! I’d recommend the Tacos, Chili Verde and Nashville Chicken Sandwich! The outdoor section is super cute and not buggy at all, it’s also covered from the sun pretty well. The service was super nice and quick. The bathrooms were super clean.

Google
Love this place! Live music calendar, great outdoor area as well as a cool pub style interior. Happy to drive from napa to have a beer and a burger here.

Sheryl Guillory

Google
Outdoor seating is great. Table ordered Taco 4 pack, Smashburger, Chile Verde, Nashville Hot Chicken, chicken Caesar sandwich.

Keith Johnson

Google
What a nice find off the main tourist trap area. GREAT burger and the garlic fries were awesome. About an 8-10 minute walk from sonoma common.

Mister Coffee

Google
Great service, great food, lots of beer options. Everything we had food wise was great! Wife had the salmon. I had the grilled cheese with ham. Daughter had the Reuben sandwich. All were excellent. The desert selection was interesting, but I think they do a better job with the savory than they do with the sweet. The beer selection was great, though I had to skip as the driver for the evening. Next time though! They have live music several times a week, which I want to go back for. The venue seems like it would be a great place to hang out, enjoy a craft brew and some good food, and listen to a local band. The attached parking lot may be a little small, but there is a lot of street parking within the block.

Google
Food is quite good (salmon, 4 taco combo, sweet waffle fries) but service can be slow. Some waiters are not as attentive compared to those in other restaurants. Especially when it came to refills of drinks.

Angela Wentworth

Google
The atmosphere and service were great! The Korean Cauliflower and Fish were awesome. However, the kid's Mac and cheese had too much butter and therefore became lumpy and grainy. The black bean burger was ok, but the binding was lacking and it fell apart very easily. The menu was on point and had a ton of different options. I would highly recommend this place as it had lots of seating options and awesome vibes.

Phil Baydestrian

Google
We came in right after our 5K and were one of the first parties seated, but somehow ended up being the last to get our food and drinks. The double smash burger was excellent — no complaints there — but the slow, out-of-order service took away from the experience.

Yelp
always a hit with our household. vibes: 10 out of 10 service: 10 out of 10 the mozzarella sticks: 10 out of 10

Yelp
Stopped in for an afternoon drink and snack with some family. The space is somewhat beer garden-esque. Most of the patio is covered, with a hodgepodge of umbrellas and canopies. The grilled artichoke I ate was just ok. Good flavor, but a bit overcooked and I didn't love the dipping sauce. I had a glass of wine and it too was just ok- I was with beer drinkers and they didn't love their selections either. Service was prompt and for the area nothing seemed to be ridiculously expensive, so that's a plus.
google avatar

Yelp
Great atmosphere and good beer. Food is crap. French dip was horrible with globs of tasteless cheese and minuscule meat on tasteless bun. Au jus was blah. Who checks what they are serving? Where's the QA? Come on guys ...you can do better than this. Go for the beer but skip the menu and eat at a food truck or find an Arby's or Buckhorn for a better sandwich. Yeah...Arbys! You will be thankful.

Yelp
Really impressed with this place! On my last day in Sonoma I took a walk towards the square and passed HopMonk along the way so decided to stop by for a late lunch! Grabbed a table on their outside patio and although it was warm, there was plenty of shade! Service was fast and friendly and it turned out it was happy hour so enjoyed $10 fish tacos that were pretty great and very fresh! Incredible deal for the serving! Also enjoyed a fantastic grilled artichoke! Washed it all down with a Pliny because I cannot get that back home and it was a great meal before heading back to SFO! Very impressed!

Yelp
We took a day trip to Sonoma to take our little to Train town. We stopped in for a late lunch before we headed back home. We sat on the deck in the patio area since the weather was nice. The outdoor is beautiful and they have a ton of shade options. My little of course picked the Mac and cheese. My husband and I chose an item off of the special menu. With our entrees we had the chose of 3 different types of fries or salad. My husband picked garlic fries and I did sweet potato. When my plate arrived I was surprised to find sweet potato waffle fries. They were perfectly seasoned and fried. My grilled chicken sandwich had fresh mozzarella and pesto mayo. The service was great and we didn't wait too long for our food to be served. I highly recommend stopping here. I know we will next time we are I. The area.

Yelp
Well..I had hoped for the best and acquired worse. Parking ..they have a parking lot or street parking We were seated inside...and our wooden table top was grimy and blah. The waitress was kind... unfortunately, she would ask a question, start to receive an answer from us and walk away quickly. I felt like I was I an SNL skit. It was very odd. Our food was okay ..my fish and chips were actually good, crisp, fresh and tasty.( thus the two star rating--otherwise maybe a one star) My wife's chicken sandwich...was advertised with cheese and dressing of which there were none and sweet potato fries were overdone and almost burnt. It was late and were not in the mood to re-order or wait for a correction . My cocktail tasted watered down and the wine was okay. Anyways ..appetizers with friends is probably okay, anything else beware. We would probably not go back .

Yelp
This is our go to restaurant whenever we're in Sonoma. The Korean cauliflower appetizer is my favorite. So crispy and succulent. We ordered the fish and chips, grilled veggie sandwich, and smash burger. Enjoyed our food outdoors on a beautiful June day. Must try!

Nancy E.

Yelp
Seriously, if you aren't here, WHERE are you! It is Friday evening in the Hopmonk beer garden and people are celebrating special occasions. What a festive occasion! The BoHoss Boys are playing roots music and it can't get any better. Andrew, our server, is making magic happen for my husband and I, meanwhile serving festive parties! We are sipping Kolsh beer and rocking to the music and enjoying the perfect evening and delicious food! It can't get better than this! Be sure to order the cauliflower starter! It can't be beat! My husband argues that nothing is better than their burger! Thank goodness for Andrew to keep us satisfied and properly served (lubricated:). Not to panic, 2 is our limit! Man, did we have fun! We are now huge fans of Hopmonk, Andrew and the BoHoss Boys!

Yelp
Came by again and had an awesome grilled chicken sandwich. Way above expectations. It filled me up and was delicious. Bacon, greens, mozzarella cheese, avocado, whoa! Thanks Ashley at the bar! Made up for the disaster that has become of the poor chicken Philly nan-wich.

Yelp
It's funny how I chose this spot again while visiting Sonoma, having completely forgotten I'd eaten here before. When I sat down at the restaurant, I had pulled up Yelp and saw my past review. I'm happy to saw this place is still as good as it was when I visited 5 years ago! We were coming from a day of wine tastings and needed something bready to fill us up. We split the chicken cheesesteak that was served on a naan type bread and pickle fries. Both were really good, but the pickle fries were little fried spears. They were delicious and I'd definitely order them again. We were seated outside and it was a chilly afternoon, but they did have ample heaters. I'd definitely recommend this spot for some solid food while in Sonoma.
google avatar

Paige J.

Yelp
Awkward entrance and menu. Pulled up but couldn't get in. Knocked on the door but they apparently don't care. I'd say, not recommended.
google avatar

J W.

Yelp
Well, I spend the whole night with explosive diarrhea. Enough said. Please to the staff, reconsider your food handling practices.

Yelp
Tried to avoid writing this review since Hopmonk was probably my favorite local spots of all time. I used to come almost every week, the food was and still is amazing quality. The main difference I have seen is the quality of the service. The last 4-5 times I have come here service is lacking. They always miss something- food or a drink and it always takes them FOREVER to take your order now. After the food is dropped off you're lucky if you're checked on- recently I have had to find someone to help me pay my bill. The last time I went was the final straw. We were there for 1.5 hours after ordering one drink, two appetizers, and an entree due to how slow the service was. I don't know if they're under new ownership or what happened, it's really disappointing but I probably won't be returning.... at least for a while.

Yelp
This place was recommended by a new friend who lives in the area. We decided to come for lunch on our day trip out here in Sonoma. We ordered the Chili Verde and a sparkling wine from a local vineyard. The food was delicious, and plenty for me, I took half home for the next day. The wine was decent, very smooth. The servers were all pleasant and helpful. We sat outside in the patio area, which was full of people. $90 for 2 meals and 2 glasses of wine, though, ouch! Quite expensive. But we enjoyed everything, so no major complaints. I'd come back again if I was in the area.

Yelp
I came in town to visit family and this place was reserved. It was a hot Saturday and found that the parking was limited, I noticed that one of the garbage pins took up two spots of parking since we had a group of four cars with 10 people. The woman at the podium greeted and showed us to our seats immediately. Our waiter checked in with us on drinks and the menu, she stepped away to help other tables and wait for our orders. It was a short time but the family members who usually come around here recommended a lot to me and my wife so our table was ready to order. I had the herb roasted chicken with mashed potatoes, my wife had a chicken sandwich with fries and a cucumber. My cousins had drinks and various other foods like sliders and sandwiches that was in the menu. All I can say was that I enjoyed my meal. The place had plenty of shade and the tables were directly under it, there was also water fountains where I saw kids played in but the signs on them said that it had bleach so please keep an eye out for your kids. The bar was inside the building and it looked like no one was tabled from the inside because it was a really nice day. The bathroom didn't smell like those public park bathrooms, it had decent ventilation to keep the air fresh from the inside. I'd come here again to see what the night vibe is like, it sorta looked like a nice place for dinner too.

Katherine H.

Yelp
Good spot for a cold beer and a burger. The outside seating is really nice and they have a decent amount of shade. Our waitress seemed very young and annoyed with our large group. The food is good but don't expect gourmet- closer to pub food than anything else.
google avatar

Humberto C.

Yelp
This was recommended by a friend who lived in the area. Right off the bat, we off to a bad start. We signed for the waitlist to get seated, which took about 15 minutes. Upon being seated, we asked if we could go outside instead. There was several open tables out, but we were told it would be another 20 minute wait. We were starving, so we declined. The host checked in within the first five minutes, and then did not return for thirty minutes. We placed our order for food and that somehow took 45 minutes. It seemed like the people around us kept food. Apart from the initial check in, the server nowhere yo be found. We had to ask a different server to check in on our food. After all that, to make matters worse, the food was mediocre, the fish was bland and had a really thick batter. The burger was crispy (I'll give em that), but it lacked seasoning and all I could taste was sauce. The fries were good! Beer was good. Wings were somehow a dry rub??? I would definitely not come back based on service, wait time, price, and food.

Yelp
This family friendly tavern has both a larger outdoor seating area and cozy indoor seating with a large bar and cute little stage! The staff were nice and the service was pretty quick for it being a saturday evening. They had a live music schedule at each table that showed they had people come in almost every friday-sunday. Now let's get to the food! Appetizers: Cheese sticks 5/5 Pretzels & cheese sauce 5/5 Wings 4/5 as rated by my husband Fries 4/5 (i asked for garlic fries but i believe these were just regular) Kids mac & cheese 3/5 my kids (ages 5, 7 & 11) weren't a fan and i had some it was a little runny Kids Chicken Strips 4/5 as rated by my 11 year old Fish & Chips 4/5 as rated by my mom Tavern Burger 3.5/5 (only because based off the description i expected pops of flavor that i didn't get and it tasted like a normal burger but still delicious)
google avatar

Helen B.

Yelp
Always the best, the service is truly incredible and the atmosphere is what brings my family back, over 10 years of weekly Friday meals !
google avatar

Yelp
Sat outside. Enjoyed the live music and beautiful weather. Service was great!! Loved everything we ordered. Will be back!!!
google avatar

Donald W.

Yelp
Food, beverages and service was very good. Table could have been cleaner. My napkin had a spoon and knife rolled in it. No fork for the salad I ordered.
google avatar

B. C.

Yelp
Ambiance on the patio is nice! Not sure if my husband and I both got unlucky but the food was bad. Very bland and my chicken was extremely tough/inedible. The prices on the menu don't match what we were charged on the bill which is also odd. Giving this place more stars than it deserves because the server took my meal off the bill no questions asked.
google avatar

Matt S.

Yelp
We had visited Hopmonk a couple times once for a large reception dinner and then for a smaller lunch. They have a great outdoor beer garden with lots of tables and plenty of shade trees for the hotter days. They do carry a line of house labeled beers which were good, but none of the food we had was up to standards. Our bloody Mary's we ordered really lacked any body and was returned to staff for alternate cocktails. Their chicken wings were overcooked and the Memphis style sauce was just not that good. Overall, no one was really happy with their food, but happy with the location and environment for dining.
google avatar

Patsy L.

Yelp
Cute place in Sonoma. There's plenty of outdoor seating. Fun, lively atmosphere. They have a bar and seating inside. Definitely a place to go watch a game. They also have a huge outdoor seating area. Service was good. We went at an off time so may be best to come early or see if they take reservations. The food & drinks were good. I've been here 2-3 times; so I highly recommend this place!

Yelp
Last minute change of plans for dinner on NYE. Initially had reservations at a nearby restaurant but decided to cancel when we found out it was a prix fixe menu. We stumbled upon this place which wasn't what we had expected. You walk into a big white tent that welcomes you with live music, what a great surprise. Although, we were sitting outside, you definitely didn't feel like it. They had outdoor heaters all over that kept a comfortable temperature throughout. The staff welcomes us and seats our party of 10 right away. Our waiter was very attentive. We ordered an array of appetizers, grilled artichoke, mozzarella sticks and calamari. I hear the roasted cauliflower is a big hit, wish we had ordered it. I had the Chicken Philly which came out piping hot and a Moscow Mule. Would love to come back to try other items on the menu.

Dylan H.

Yelp
Was really looking forward to trying this place, however, we were met with poor service and unwillingness to accommodate our large group even though we were the only ones there. Eventually left without ever getting to order.
google avatar

ROB H.

Yelp
Stopped by for a quick bite. Order the special which was a chicken sandwich with fries. The sandwich was delicious and large enough to share with another person. The restaurant had a large patio and a bar in another room The food was good but unfortunately the service left something to be desired. Our waitress was very slow and not very attentive. She also pre selected her tip at 20% when she brought the electronic check to us. The food and atmosphere we good enough to come back and enjoy again
google avatar

Bill H.

Yelp
It had been sometime since we had gone to HopMonk. We live out of the area and we met family there for dinner. We dined outside as it was a pleasant evening. The food was as I expected to be. It was good, I had the Fish and Chips and the others with me had good things to say about their meals. The service was the only negative we encountered. We had two grandsons with us and it took an inordinate amount to time to get our order taken, and for the food to arrive. It was not a particularly busy night as I observed. Still the company we kept and the food still makes it a good place to go.
google avatar

Jeff H.

Yelp
100% recommend. Fantastic place to watch a football game, they've got plenty of screens and will have the audio feed available as well. Food wise, you must order the HopMonk burger with garlic fries (be sure to ask for them extra hot, it's more than worth the extra little wait). Burger is juicy and always cooked perfectly (medium rare for me), and is packed with flavor. Don't be afraid to ask for any modifications as well, the staff is super accommodating to such things. HopMonk is for sure one of the best spots in Sonoma.
google avatar

Rob K.

Yelp
My wife and I visited Hopmonk on a Saturday in June around 12:45. We were promptly seated inside. We had the option of inside or outside but as the temperature was pushing 90 degrees, inside was definitely preferred. Typically I would have opted for a draft beer as the list was fairly impressive but was in the midst of a wine sampling tour. I would definitely like to try a few beers and/or wine. I had the French Dip with garlic fries. The French Dip was one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. The garlic fries were amazing as well. My wife had grilled cheese and enjoyed hers. Our waitress was just average which is why I didn't give 5 stars. She didn't really check on us at all. There was a cover band playing outside that if it was cooler I would have been more inclined to sit outside and listen to. If you are nearby, this is a must stop. Portions are strong and the quality is outstanding. Next time I'm trying beverages.
google avatar

Nicole P.

Yelp
Family friendly tavern with good food and drinks. Live music, good vibes, and lots of menu items to choose from. The waiters were friendly and very attentive with our large party.
google avatar

Michelle R.

Yelp
What a beautiful patio. The band was really good as was the food. We got the gem salad, samosas, and soft pretzel. Everything was very tasty.
google avatar

Sukhy B.

Yelp
Food was amazing and super close to Sonoma Plaza. Outdoor seating is perfect if you have a pet. Service was a bit slow but the food made up for it.
google avatar

Heidi D.

Yelp
We had a delicious dinner from their food truck at Transcendence so we decided to come try out the restaurant in Sebastopol. Such a great outdoor space! Loved the feel with families, couples, friends, dogs, kids, etc. Seemed like everyone was out on this Saturday early evening! There was a musician on the outdoor stage and the band-of-the-night was warming up inside. It was a little less enjoyable hearing both at once. I'd probably sit farther away from the inside concert stage if I wanted to focus more on the outdoor. That said... Service was friendly and paced well as we weren't in a hurry! I ordered the HopMonk Hefeweizen and it was perfect! Cold, citrus wheat-y, not bitter! Dinner was a cheeseburger and garlic fries. I was pleasantly surprised by the tomato chutney as it added a delicious amount of tang/sweetness I didn't know I needed. Brioche buns are always decadent and I Ioved the crispy shallots. Garlic fries were crispy. I look forward to returning!

Yelp
Rainy Night Perfection at HopMonk Tavern We visited HopMonk Tavern in Sonoma on a rainy November evening, and it was the perfect cozy spot to wrap up a day of touring Napa Valley. I had the Kellerbier, a hazy unfiltered pilsner with a unique cellar-fresh taste, and my wife loved the HopMonk IPA, a West Coast IPA that hit all the right notes. The food was just as incredible as the beer. The fish and chips were perfectly fried with the right amount of crunch, and the Chile Verde was unforgettable--tender braised pork in a tangy tomatillo sauce with just the right kick. Service from Juan was top-notch! We're already planning to come back and enjoy their outdoor beer garden on a sunny day. Follow us! @wandering_lovebirds

Trevis M.

Yelp
Ordered the ribeye and a coworker ordered tacos. Steak picture didn't turn out well so didn't attach it. Hopmonk has a cabin like warm vibe with an outdoor area intended for live music or other entertainment activities. The place itself was pretty nice however I wasn't impressed by the food. The steak was the thinnest ribeye I've ever received and it didn't come with much for sides. Other than that looking at the tacos and seafood bowls it looks like that's the items to buy. Service was okay and it was nice to see the staff working together when delivering entrees.
google avatar

Jen S.

Yelp
While some items are a bit run of the mill pub fare, there are some real standouts, such as the Korean cauliflower, and the sweet chili chicken wings (especially if boneless). The wait can be predictably long, but for a temperate evening, worth it for the outdoor seating. Depending on the time of day, can be a bit loud for good conversations with your dining companions, but I think this is typical for the type of venue, not a strike against this particular spot.
google avatar

Pauline H.

Yelp
Love the indoor and covered outdoor option, family and dog friendly. There's live music, bistro lights, very cool ambiance. Food was great, large portion, reasonably priced. 8 adults and 8 kids, about $35 per person including appetizer, beverage and gratuity. There's kids menu, burger, sandwich, on a lighter side, there's salad. A wide variety of beer, alcohol, also mocktail menu. Our water was never refilled, the restaurant was so busy our server was nowhere to be found. I had to get up and find the beverage station. Brought the jug of water across the restaurant, refilled my table's water glasses, brought the empty jug back to the beverage station- I did this twice and no workers even noticed or offered to help.
google avatar

Janet S.

Yelp
Hopmonk is a nice casual tavern that has some great food. Our party of four tried the salmon cake sliders, grilled chicken sandwich, fish & chips and a chicken Philly sandwich. Ample portions, I enjoyed half of my chicken Philly the next day. Nice patio seating or inside in the bar or den (a more secluded area for about 15 people.
google avatar

Yelp
My wife and I come here just for the Calamari! 10/10 - Best we've ever had. Also nice service
google avatar

Rebecca D.

Yelp
We came her on a rainy February Sunday, ready for lunch. They have a large tented Biergarten, but too cold for us today. Inside was warm and cozy. Hubby and I split an order of boneless Buffalo wings and a grilled artichoke. Everything was tasty and plenty for the two of us. Nice service too!
google avatar

RoseEllen S.

Yelp
Once upon a time, this Faerie Queen was told this was the place for great beer and food. We stopped by on a lovely Sunday afternoon and sat outside in the nicest area! We listened to Chris Hanlin sing and play guitar. He was fabulous! So glad to know he plays here often. I will be back for the music, oh yeah, and the delicious food! The end.
google avatar

Barbara S.

Yelp
We visited HopMonk Son9ma on a very hot 100 degrees early evening, specifically to listen to one of our favorite Sonoma musicians. We were seated right away, it wasn't busy at all outside. While the service was pretty good, I have to give the food only 3 stars. The calamari was tasty but pretty oily as it had not been drained well or was fried a too low of a temp. I ordered the nicotine salad and hubby had the ahi tuna salad. Both of our tuna portions were rubbery and chewy. The rest of the salad was ok, but my greens were doused in too much salad dressing. Beer is good, they have a pretty decent selection of wine and of course cocktails. Reasonably priced food.
google avatar

Ariana M.

Yelp
I want to start off by saying that this was one of my favorite restaurants YEARS ago. But it has gone downhill. After about three years of not going, my boyfriend and I decided to give it another try. Big mistake! The food remains the same, very bland, no flavor whatsoever. We ordered calamari but had to tell them to take it back because of the unusual smell. We ended getting the classic boneless wings instead, but they were just as bad, so dry, and hardly any sauce to them. Our server was OK but did not check in on us often. It's honestly, a great location, has great outdoor seating and dog friendly, but the food is absolutely horrible, especially with the high pricing, NOT worth it !

Vini C.

Yelp
We've dined here a few times with our friends and kids after a trip to Train Town which is nearby. It's a great place for a group or family get together with a great outdoor set up for kids and adults alike. The smash burger was excellent and their drinks are on point. Food came out fast and very attentive staff. I highly recommend.
google avatar

Donna D.

Yelp
Husband and I were there for lunch. He'd ordered the hop burger with garlic fries. And mine was half rotisserie chicken with mashed potatoes and grill vegetables. The garlic fries were the best we ever had. His burger was cooked perfectly medium well. The half chicken was very well seasoned and very moist.
google avatar

Vicky L.

Yelp
Fast service. Clean outdoor space. For larger parties like ours, I definitely recommend calling ahead. Service was attentive and the staff was friendly. I do think the cheese for the pretzel needs work tho. But fries were a 10/10 for me.
google avatar

Bill G.

Yelp
Went in for lunch, seated immediately with water arriving shortly after. My son had the chili Verde which was probably the best dish. I had the herb chicken and wife had the cheese burger with garlic fries. I received 1/2 a chicken with my order which was tasty, the veggies and mash potatoes were very good. Wife liked her cheeseburger, especially the garlic fries. All our entrees were over $20, but portions were plentiful. Will return in the future.

Yelp
Cesar and Ashley are the best Bartenders! Had Pliny the elder beer with fish tacos and Korean cauliflower for the win! Super fun atmosphere with a cold beer!
