The 14 Best Bars In Amsterdam

"Hitting a bruin café is a must when visiting Amsterdam. Residents gather in these watering holes, named after their plentiful use of dark brown wood, for a biertje or a kopstootje. Also known as a “headbutt,” a kopstootje consists of a tulip glass filled to the brim with genever (the Dutch-invented predecessor to gin), served alongside a beer—and the rule is you must tilt your head to take the first sip, hands free. You can’t really go wrong when choosing a bruin café, but Café Hoppe ticks a lot of boxes, and you should make it one of your first stops in the city. Just make sure you head there before 6pm, especially on weekends, to avoid the crowds. It's located on Spuistraat near many other fantastic pubs, and cocktail bars in nearby Negen Straatjes or Leidseplein. And part of the place itself is a national monument, open since the 1600s. " - paolo espanola

18 Best Bars in Amsterdam | Condé Nast Traveler

"One of Amsterdam's storied old brown cafés, Cafe Hoppe opened in 1670 as a jenever distillery. Now, it's a Spui-square-adjacent favorite among locals and tourists. You'll find an extensive range of beer, wine, and spirits. But it's worth seeking out the jenever, particularly the Old Corenwijn." - Meredith Bethune

Just stopped in for a beer on the way home as it's right down the street from our VRBO. It was hopping outside, but we were able to get a seat inside and the vibe was awesome. Will probably be back during our stay

Google
NICE spot for a drink and people watching. Excellent beer and cider selection. Wine and cocktails too. Good snacks. Very casual.

Google
Great place to get bitter ballen and a cold beer. Historic bar that keeps the vibe alive

Google
Nice food, nice beer, nice service. Expected a more traditional atmosphere, only some minor disappointments about it😌

Kathryn Mcgreavy

Google
On my second visit to the bar I was told “to move across the street as I was not welcome” the young male waiter who said it told me “he was trying to serve his guests” which meant the local people of Amsterdam. He then turned his back on me when I tried to give him my empty bottle. I was really taken aback by his rude remark as others had been so nice. I won’t return and would tell others not to go due to this.

Dating from 1670, and bringing an ounce of charm from every year on this earth. Get a glass of La Chouffe and sit back in the flickering candlelight while the conversation bubbles around you.

Google
Really nice bar / cafe overlooking a small square. Inside there is a lot of history on its walls, and the atmosphere is good and friendly. Service is friendly and welcoming. Very busy in the evening!

Google
Absolutely amazing place! The atmosphere is so cozy. Large variety of beers, tap and bottle. And the meatballs are delicious. (Biterballen) as they are called - deep fried meat ragu melting in your mouth. That topped with few of the beers is the perfect end of your day in Amsterdam. I can't wait to go again.

Yelp
Be still my heart! We didn't have tons of time in Amsterdam, but I'm glad we tracked down this cafe. I was surprised it wasn't busier, given the unique history of it. This was absolutely THE spot to try a sample of local favorite bar foods. We snacked on Dutch cheese, marinated olives, bitterballen, and meatballs, all with mustards and jams/sauces - every single bite was exquisite. They had a good sampling of local beers, and we tried a few different ones. The service was excellent inside, the bartender was friendly (and funny!) and served us attentively. I loved the original interiors and cozy brown cafe vibes. It's in a great location near other shops and sites if you're looking to make an afternoon of it - which you should!

Yelp
Great location on the Spui (pronounced Spow) next to the Negen Stratjes. Very crowded after work as the work week winds down, no matter the weather, as there are heat lamps to keep you warm. Fun place to go with friends - plenty of drink options and a great ambiance with lots of history - Cafe Hope has been there since 1670!!
google avatar

Yelp
A quintessential Dutch experience inside or out. For the service was pretty exceptional considering my server was covering the entire outside. My Liefmans was served in the proper glass and on ice. Perfect

Yelp
The final stop of our food tour, Café Hoppe is a traditional "brown café" which means that it is dark wood, smoke-stained and just plain cozy. It's also one of the oldest drinking establishments in the city! We had a genever and a plate of dutch cheese with some pickles. It was actually perfect. As it was still a little drizzly and chilly today, this was a great spot to stop for a drink and a snack to wind up the afternoon. Really enjoyable spot and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Yelp
Incredible atmosphere, incredible (and handsome) staff. Make sure to go to the behind the bar for a speakeasy style bar and super fun vibes.

Yelp
Café Hoppe is another one of Amsterdam's oldest bars, founded in 1670. This charming and historical pub is known for their excellent selection of Belgian beers and Bitterballen. Located on the Spui, next to Van Stapele Koekmakerij, this bar is popular amongst tourists and locals. During our visit we managed to snag a table inside (the weather was nice so the locals were taking advantage of the sunshine outside). We ordered a round or two of beers and the Bitterballen (Dutch specialty bar snack) which paired nicely with our beer. I noticed Van Stapele Koekmakerij had just removed a tray of cookies, fresh from the oven so I ran across the street and purchased several cookies to enjoy at the bar. I highly recommend visiting Cafe Hoppe if you are visiting Amsterdam!

Yelp
Great place! Neat inside, and the food was really tasty! I had a salad plus meatballs, cheese, and olives. I drank a delicious cider on the side. We sat in a covered patio area, which was great for people watching. In a very central spot right near the Dam tram station. Definitely a great spot to grab lunch and rest your feet.

Yelp
When we stopped by here to get a beer and some snacks I had no idea that this was one of the oldest bars in Amsterdam. It just looked like a cool place to hang out so we did. Sat inside facing the the open windows to the street to watch the afternoon cityscape pass by, as well as the World Cup playing on the TVs (real reason I wanted to stop in). The waiters were very friendly and the beer was delicious. The one thing I really wanted to try was bitterballen. I really had no idea what they were but I was told I needed go try them. They were quite tasty, ordered some bitterballen and some meatballs to snack on whilst drinking some dark beer and watching soccer. What a tasty combination. I later found out that bitterballen are dutch style meatballs. They are made of beef and/or veal with gravy as croquettes. I also found out that almost all the bitteballen in the various pubs, bars and restaurants are made off site almost all from one factory that makes, freezes and distributes them so it really does not matter where you eat these things. Definitely check this place out when you are walking/biking around Amsterdam.

Yelp
Whenever I pass by this spot, I can't help but wander in for a quick jenever tasting. If you want to see a place with history, this is it. It has a cool story and has been open continuously for centuries. Each time, the staff has been friendly. Don't be put off by the crowd outside, there has always been room inside at the bar.

Yelp
If the Dutch Masters were alive today, this would most definitely be their hangout. Cafe Hoppe is loaded with old world charm and is one of the best brown bars in the city. The decor, selection of beers, and service make this one an iconic stop in the city. Yes, when people think of warm, inviting Amsterdam pub, this is what they are envisioning, for it is popular with locals and tourist in the know alike. . Oh, and now that I think of it, let me just say a word or two about this establishment's signature snack: Bitterballen...Yummo!!! These little deep-fried balls of deliciousness are the perfect complement to good Dutch beer. The so creamy that you would swear that they are loaded with cheese, but I am told that it is more akin to beef and gravy which is fine by me for as far as I am concerned beef and gravy is a cousin to cheese on the tastiness scale. Seriously, these babies were one of the best things that I have ever eaten in a bar. In fact, I really do think that they may nudge out my beloved American Buffalo Wings for ultimate bar snack. Again, I can't say enough about this spot but that I visited it every day that I was in Amsterdam.

Jason C.

Yelp
Locals favorite - always cozy and busy. Don't be thrown by the crowds, get to the bar and order up they are the nicest in the city since 1670!!!!

Yelp
Awesome place to grab a beer and just people watch. The inside is cozy but the sitting outside on the covered verandah is the best. Good cheap Belgium ale selection too - Leffe is a safe choice but also particular fond of the "Brand" (yes, that is the brand) I had here as well.

Yelp
Just stopped by for some Cold beers and some bitterballen (of course) and these where some of the best we had on our Amsterdam stay. Prices are moderate and service fast and friendly. That the café is about 300 years old makes the ambiance even better.
google avatar

Yelp
Always a great stop for a lively bar atmosphere and iconic interior in Amsterdam. Definitely go.

Yelp
Really cool bar, the staff is wonderful, my friends and I actually enjoyed stayed at the bar talking to them. It has a very small terrace and it's always full!!! It's great to go for a beer after work!

Yelp
I came here on a recommendation by a friend here on Yelp and I was not let down. From the outside it looks like any other cafe in the area or throughout Amsterdam but inside is a more warm atmosphere. It has low lighting but not too dark to trip and far on something. The old wood decor, the waiter/bartenders with white dress shirt uniforms and the way the bar is setup gives an old world charm, a smaller European version of Cheers in Boston. I can definitely see this being a local pub. There were several unique brews on tap I never heard of and don't recall the name. The inside has stools at the bar, couple tables by the window and more table seating in the back. But before even entering, there is one aisle of seats where you can sit outside to drink your beer, no tables. Then there is another section of seating with tables enclosed by glass or plastic housing where you can still have that outside feel but stay warm when it gets too cold outside. My order was a drink and the suggested Bitterballen (Portie Bitterballe) on the side, these little fried balls can be compared to Falafels but varies in recipe, taste and texture. These 8 little balls cost (ONLY) 5.50 Euros accompanied with slices of pickle and mustard, they are amazing. I am sure they are deep fried right there as you order them because each bite was crisp, steaming when bit into and the roof of the mouth scorching, yes burned the roof of my mouth, awesome! That hot burn is something you know is FRESH straight out of the fryer, not heated up. The inside was gooey but not like sauce gooey, like mash potatoes but tasted different, a flavor I never experienced before. The flavor was good and very strong, like it was loaded with spice, butter and bacon... really unique flavor and very filling. After I finish my snack and drink, my appetite was full. Time to continue my trek. -Next door is also a Cafe Hoppe but was under construction. -No Television -Stairs leading upstairs I believe to the restroom or the second level (I don't recall)

Yelp
nice pub for groups with a lot of charachter but the space to host many people. Cafe Hoppe is on a busy corner of trams, foot traffic and bikes of course. great for people watching and somewhere to sit to feel the city move. the menu hosts many classic Dutch snacks as well as a wide variety of beers. shouldn't be disappointed here for a nice city experience.

Yelp
Café Hoppe is actually two places: an amazing brown café and a very attractive modern establishment. I only patronized the brown café side of it, so that's the part that I'm reviewing. It's a tiny dim café with high ceilings and somewhat of a chill to the air. in the old days, they only had those single pane windows! It's traditional to come in wearing your coat, stand at the bar and enjoy your post-work restoration while standing. Since we were hoofing it through bone chilling Amsterdam, I opted for a seat! Once seated, I ordered snert (split pea soup), bitterballen, and Berenburg for us in my clumsy Dutch. All were SO good. The bartender also had the well-honed skill of filling the glass of Berenburg until it was more than full, with only the surface tension keeping it from spilling. Well, I'm not too proud to slurp the glass while it's still on the table, in order to pick it up! According to the guide book, this place serves the most beer in the Netherlands relative to its square footage. I can believe it! A proud tradition continues. Go there and take part!

Yelp
Hoppe is the best pub in Amsterdam. Discussion over. It is gorgeous inside. Guidebook says it dates back to the 17th century. There's still sand on the floor to relive the old method of keeping tobacco spit from staining the floors. But go there for the libations. The beer is fantastic and the selection is broad. Or sample the Dutch jenever (gin). Either way, you'll be in good hands with the staff. They know their stuff and are there to please.

Yelp
My local office coworkers took us there. It seems they need to drink several round of beer before dinner. When we got there, there are a lot of drinking outside of the bar. Don't they feel cold to drink outside in the winter? My coworker told me about the bar history. It looks very classic and traditional bar. Mr. Heineken likes it so much. So he bought this bar. So they serve Heineken beer most time. There are some sand on the ground. I don't know why. Maybe to prevent drunk people spill beer and mess up the ground.

kevin c.

Yelp
Met friends here for beers before dinner at Five Flies. Bar tender was enthusiastic about the establishment. She let me taste Jenevers before. Committing to one. Very convivial local bar feel. Contrary to previous Yelper opinion, I believe it is about four hundred years old.

Yelp
Naturally after reading all the reviews about this place being iconic, I was certain I wanted to visit. I started off extremely excited for the experience. However, from the moment I sat down at the bar, I felt awkward and as if my business was a nuisance. The older bartender looked at me strangely and questioned me impatiently when I asked for suggestions on beer. When I ordered food he seemed to be brushing me off as he noted my order and put it in. Another bartender came up to me and chatted with me, as well asked asked how I was enjoying the food/drinks. He definitely made up in where his coworker was lacking. I thought I was being judgmental and perhaps I was reading his social cues wrong - that's when I heard other customers approach him and complain about his service. As he got extremely defensive and "yeah yeah yeah-ed" and "I don't care-d" them, I knew it wasn't just me. The customers left and he spoke to other customers at the bar about them. I wasn't sure what he had said, but he mimicked the American accent and was acting quite like a child. I thought his performance was extremely inappropriate and unprofessional. The food was wonderful and his coworker was great and gave me excellent suggestions for my travels... but would I recommend? Not unless you want to pay to be somewhere where you'll feel unwelcome. The food was not worth the awkward experience.

Yelp
Bitterballen were delicious! Chicken soup was surprisingly tasty. 4 stars for one of our beers served warm.
google avatar

Yelp
A beautiful pub, the oldest in Amsterdam! There is sawdust on the floor and you will see locals and tourists in here a like. We went in the afternoon and it was pleasantly quiet. They also do bittenballs and other great beer snacks
google avatar

Bryan P.

Yelp
Neat little cafe in a busy area of Amsterdam. Food was great. Shared Dutch bitterballen and liver sausage (it resembled pate` more than it did a proper sausage). Wide assortment of Dutch snacks and a huge selection of sandwiches. Has a full bar.
google avatar

Karen C.

Yelp
I'm so glad someone pointed this bar out to us. It is, among other things, old, charming & friendly. Super nice bartenders and a great selection of beers which they will help you navigate. The prices are low & the ambiance is perfect... warm & cozy. You can tell the crowd here is fun, and it draws everyone in. Definitely stop in, if only for 1 drink.
google avatar

Sam L.

Yelp
This is a very popular bar in the Spui area. Count on it being standing room only with people eagerly chatting with beer in hand or on the table. Their is also waiter service outside so you don't have to brave the crowd to get a drink. I find it absolutely amazing this is one of many pubs in Amsterdam that is still in operation from the 17th yes the seventeenth century. Now how cool is that.

Jim U.

Yelp
Every time we go here, June 2016, 2017, 2018, we have a great time. Unpretentious, friendly, solid human beings like to relax here. Our bartender is a very funny, friendly guy who treats us like good friends from way back. The beer (have a couple at least), and bitteballen are delicious. There are wonderful restaurants and a hearing stand nearby, too. Cheers to Cafe Hoppe! Dank je wel!
google avatar

Jada W.

Yelp
Seemed like a very cute little restaurant, but the constant slamming of doors made the experience very unpleasant. It had an unpleasant atmosphere. The food was at best mediocre and neither my girlfriend or I enjoyed our meals. We were ready to leave half way through our meals. So sad for such a cute and historic place to be like this.

Catherine A.

Yelp
Historical cafe/pub in prime square of Amsterdam. I had the split pea soup, a hearty choice for 6 euros. It was chock full of ham and slices of sausage, and so thick that it was more like a stew than a soup. They serve it with dark moist bread spread with mustard and what looks like a thin slice of bacon or cured meat. While I loved the soup, and it kept me full for hours, I admit I was a bit fearful of the raw looking bacon/cold cut mystery bread-topper. A Dutch treat that I have no regrets missing out on... I liked the historical character, but smoke from the outside part of the cafe kept drifting in, so not the most pleasant dining experience. Great for people watching, and probably more of a pub that a food destination.
google avatar

May P.

Yelp
Amazing old charming bar! Great Amstel and a few snacks on the menu as well. This place draws a fun crowd and it's good people watching. The bartender is nice too! Go, you will love it!
google avatar

Scott A.

Yelp
You go here for the atmosphere and the beer but they also serve open face sandwiches and other simple dishes that are quite good. They serve a very nice Belgian ale here called Palm that I highly recommend. I love to hang out here watching the world go by.
google avatar

Arthur K.

Yelp
I love the interior of this place. It's incredibly welcoming and is the definition of old world charm. After a few pints I order the bitterbollen. This is the first time I've had it and can only describe it as bits of meat and gravy battered and deep fried. It was pretty good pub food and went well with my beers.

Freja J.

Yelp
Very nice historical place! Best bittenballen in town, and friendly and professional staff!
google avatar

Fanny Francine G.

Yelp
One of my favourite places in Amsterdam all year round, for chilling out with friends, enjoying a beer and some finger foods. An institution here!
google avatar

Julie G.

Yelp
Like most places in Amsterdam, I am not quite sure how we ended up here, but am glad it happened. Like the other reviews state, from the outside this place looks like any other cafe or pub in Amsterdam, so when you walk inside you are definitely pleasantly surprised. I found the vibe inside to be warm and quite lively. We just ordered a bunch of fried things to eat, so nothing make mention of or recommend, but would definitely recommend going here if you are in Amsterdam - way different vibe than most establishments inside the canals.
google avatar

Dave N.

Yelp
What a great old style Cafe. We had a great time and highly recommend a visit. Its the kind of place you can easily loose yourself in for hours having good drinks and conversations with friends.
google avatar

Kerrie S.

Yelp
We only stayed in here a little while to have a coffee, but it was great. I expected it to be quite touristy because of the surrounding neighborhood, but we were pleasantly surprised to see a lot of locals (and tourists too of course). The atmosphere was casual and noisy and fun. Recommended.
google avatar

Sheila S.

Yelp
Wonderfully located on Spui, and great for people-watching, this little bar is a great place to take a break and enjoy a beer! My husband and I stopped on a weekday afternoon and each enjoyed an Affligem beer for 3.50 euro each. Despite us being tourists, it did not feel touristy.
google avatar

Brian F.

Yelp
Very old pub with a great selection of drinks and great servers. Sit outside for some great people-watching.

Kate T.

Yelp
Service was friendly. Beer was good. View was nice. Nachos...well, for Amsterdam they were ok. The white chocolate cheesecake was worth it.
google avatar

Jörg S.

Yelp
I like this place. Friendly waitresses and guests. Try the cheese platter. Seems to be a good pub for after work.

AJ R.

Yelp
Went there late. Wasn't really looking for a big meal. The appetizers hit the spot. Washed down with a good beer and a good atmosphere

Danette L.

Yelp
Authentic Brown Café. We were lucky enough to rent an apartment up the street from one of Amsterdam's brown cafes - Café Hoppe. The beer is excellent and the atmosphere unique to Amsterdam. The staff was also very friendly. Highly recommend stopping in for a drink and some bitterballen (crispy bite-size Dutch beef croquettes).

Deena K.

Yelp
We spent our evening in their ample outdoor area in front of the pub. We had a fun time and the service was good. The area that I assume is the restaurant portion of the cafe turns into a club later on.

Eric B.

Yelp
The Dutch enjoy pouring a thick head on top of their beers. I am ok with this but not when its in a .25 Liter glass and its half head. The waiter was surly and rude and literally sprayed water at me when he was cleaning the bar. Maybe the bar tender was having a bad night but should have left his aggressive rude attitude at home that night.

Chris A.

Yelp
Great place for a beer (which is all we had @ about 2 euros). Attentive and quick service - narrow bar but outside seating. Accepts credit cards and it's great place for a beer.
