"Crisp, Bloomingdale’s go-to spot for Nashville hot wings and chicken sandwiches, officially flipped into Hopscotch last week, bringing the neighborhood a place full of board games, $7 glasses of wine, and Italian-American entrees. The two-story venture (1837 1st Street NW) comes from Matt Mazzocchi and his father, Tommy Mazzocchi, who spent the past seven years working at Dupont Circle sports bar Maddy’s. They began overhauling the menu and renovating the space in March. The bar’s new name stems from both the childhood game — which is depicted across the black-and-white entrance — and the breakdown of “hops” for beer, and “scotch” for liquor. Classic cocktails are $9 to $12, and orange or grapefruit summertime crushes are $7. The opening beer list includes 15 bottles and cans, with Flying Dog, Corona, and Sierra Nevada in the mix ($5 to $7). Natty Boh is $4 all day. The two-story space opens at 5 p.m. daily to start. Starters ($5-$11) include mac and cheese, turkey chili, and plenty of fried food (chicken liver, pickles, calamari, wings). Boar’s Head products star in the sandwich section ($9-$13), which includes hot dogs, a hot pastrami sandwich, and Italian classics like a meatball Parmesan or sausage and peppers. Entrees are reasonably priced ($11 to $14) and include Alfredo tortellini, stuffed shells, fish and chips, and a grilled pork chop with mashed potatoes. Nine wines are all $7 by the glass. Crisp chef Monroe Marsh, whose background is Italian, stayed on board to man the menu: Crisp’s bogo happy hour is gone, sadly. Weekday happy hour at Hopscotch runs from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and calls for cheap wine, beer, and rail drinks (starting at $4) along with discounted appetizers. Renovations to the stone-lined space upstairs space include framed throwback movie posters from ET, 10 and Conan the Barbarian, as well as references to Marilyn Monroe and Frank Sinatra. Guests are encouraged to grab a board game at the entrance, with options like Sorry and Battleship." - Tierney Plumb

I’ve been here a few times in last month. Food is always awesome. From the pretzels to the charcuterie, spaghetti & meatballs to the pizza: All awesome with New York flavor! If Tommy makes his New York cheesecake, get it! You will not be disappointed. Drinks are awesome too. This place has so much potential, good prices, and great atmosphere upstairs or downstairs.

Best fish & chips ive ever had! Love the thin crisp breading. Good portion size and seasoned well. Fries similarly good and seasoned well

Google
A great neighborhood bar! Fantastic food. 100% recommend the margarita pizza, cheese sticks, and cheese cake. I promise you they have more than just cheese inspired food options that also sounded good. Nice atmosphere, friendly people, and good conversation. Definitely a place worth checking out!

Google
Our favorite spot in the neighborhood! Everything on the menu hits the spot and prices are super reasonable compared to other places in the city. The happy hour is great and includes deals on food too. There is always a crowd of regulars welcoming you in and the owners are super friendly. You won’t regret stopping by!

Google
Amazing staff, amazing home style Italian food, amazing vibe. Can't really ask for a better bar/restaurant. The kind of place where you can saddle up at the bar and talk with bartender and other customers. All while eating delicious pizza, pasta, or what ever Italian flavor you're feeling. If you're in town for a quick trip and need a local place, HopScotch is there for you.

Google
Amazing place! Good food, great bartenders and really good conversations. It's a locals bar that opens itself up to out of towners. Beyond friendly and highly suggest. Andy, Paige and Tommy are must meets at this place.

Yelp
Matt, the proprietor, was fantastic to us. He said that the intention behind this place was to create a Cheers-style neighborhood spot that welcomed everyone. Additionally, he (and his father and co-owner) wanted to serve authentic Italian fare at reasonable prices. To the owners I say, "mission accomplished. " The crowd was extremely warm and inviting with great conversation. The food portions are very generous and you will not leave hungry. Furthermore, it tastes great. If I ever move to DC, I'm moving to this neighborhood just to be in proximity.

Yelp
Pretty decent neighborhood bar experience if you have a small group and are in the area looking for something a little different. The place has a mini-Cheers vibe to it. You walk down the stairs in this small basement area. I came for Game 1 of the World Series because all the other bars in the area were sold out (even standing room was sold out). This place had a table available. It's very small overall, but they have plenty of drinks available and some typical bar food. We ended up getting a pizza because the waiter was honest about the other food not being such a great choice for that time of night. The pizza was pretty good. The prices are fair. The bathroom is clean. Overall, it seems very much like a neighborhood bar that I would assume many others know each other in there. Definitely a place to pick. I assume the patio and upstairs (assuming there is one) has more space for other times of the day and week.

Yelp
Love this neighborhood gem! I visited the DC area for a wedding and ended up stumbling into this place by chance. Being from the NYC area, this place exceeded my standards for its great food! Wasn't expecting to get restaurant & nyc-quality pizza at a bar, but was pleasantly surprised! The owner was very friendly and even offered us free shots (once he realized we were from the same area)! If i ever go back to DC I will definitely stop by to visit once again! Highly recommend to anyone looking for a great vibe, with awesome food and crafted drinks!

Yelp
Ordered on a Friday night through Yelp/Grubhub. It arrived early but was totally scorched on the bottom! Wish it wasn't because otherwise looks good. Owner offered a redo so holding off on a worse rating.

Yelp
First, I would like to apologize first for not backing this review up with photos, I just didn't think of it at the time. Second, I will highlight the good before I identify the bad and what needs to be improved. 4-24-22 GOOD: style-it's located in a remodeled basement with patio seating. Nice decore and ambiance. Waitress- super polite and attentive. Promptness of order fulfillment- fast. Freshness- growing basil, parsley and maybe cilantro on-site. NEEDS TO BE IMPROVED: I ordered the Chicken Parm. and spaghetti and had high hopes as this is a favorite dish I rarely order. As stated realier, food came fast which normally would be good, but with chicken, this got my attention. As soon as I tasted the pasta I was instantly disappointed. Pasta was over cooked and mushy. It's supposed to be al dente.. the "sauce" was nothing more than red flavorless water. Proper pasta sauce is to have a solid tomato base with some heavy cream, you are not supose to be able to see through it, but it's not supposed to be a thick pasty sauce either. The garlic bread was bitter and almost burnt. The chicken, although cooked properly, had a heavy crunchy breading that was on the verge of being burnt and it tasted like it. I was super hungry and so I ate it. The wife ordered pasta fagioli and a salad. Croutons were soft and void of flavor, salad was otherwise ok. The Fagioli on the other hand, like my spaghetti, was very watery. Yes it's a soup, but the broth was so thin that you can tell it was lacking substance. The pasta was very over cooked and it was without question, the worst Fagioli I have ever had. THE BAD: The owner/chef/ Mgr (not sure of his position) Came out multiple times to sit on the stairs next door and smoke cigarettes that wafted into the patio 5 feet away and into our "dining" experience. I have nothing against smokers, I just don't want to smell it when I eat...or try to. I really hate leaving bad reviews, but as an Itallian, I can't let this go unmentioned. Love and respect needs to be shown to this epicureanism (fine food). We left not just disappointed, but sad. We actually went and had a second dinner. When the waitress cleared the table the question was never asked "was something wrong", or "did you not like the food". I was expecting that she would, since 75% of our food remained on the plate. Food at this price point ($75) should be cooked fresh and properly.

Sharon L.

Yelp
The staff was friendly but the food was mediocre at best. Ordered a margarita pizza and added prosciutto - it literally had no flavor. While the wings tasted good they were the smallest wigs I've ever seen! My drink tasted good but had a lot of debris floating around in it. I definitely will not go back!!!

Kristin T.

Yelp
Strolled in because my friend lives nearby, bartender and owner are so personable and the food is GREAT (shoutout to the cook David, it's obvious he cooks with love)! I had the Mozzarella Sticks and the OG Sandwich... waddled out lol. My friend had Fried Pickles and the Sausage and Peppers Sandwich. Apps came out super quick, Happy Hour deals, Delicious food!

Whitney M.

Yelp
Such an amazing neighborhood bar. Great food, friendly people, good happy hour. Really hope it's around for a long time. They also do comedy nights.

Kara J.

Yelp
Excellent food, excellent drinks a and very friendly staff and this new addition to Bloomingdale. I have been craving fish and chips for weeks decided on a whim to try Hopscotch. The fish is fresh, flaky, and well seasoned. The Watermelon Crush was also a welcome refreshment to the 100 degrees D.C. Day. My husband and friend ordered the O.G. Chicken Sandwich and Spaghetti and meatballs and were equally impressed. The fried pickles slices were similarly impressive. The new owners have done an excellent job, and this place is a welcome addition to the neighborhood.

Andrew W.

Yelp
Love the fish and chips. Lightly breaded and hot! Also fresh French fries and great service!

Sarah O.

Yelp
Do you like great Italian food, fun atmosphere, and hapiness? Then Hopscotch is the place to be! Recommend the pizza and wings!

Hannah H.

Yelp
I went to Hopscotch on a Friday night for dinner. A busy night for them, but still, service was great. Andy, our waiter, made good conversation and was attentive. Their menu is focused on comfort food but feels creative at the same time. For example, the entrees include stuffed shells, Cincinnati chili, and fish and chips. My partner ordered the chicken sandwich and really enjoyed it. Really, I appreciate that their menu isn't a carbon copy of other tavern/sports bar menus. The only reason Hopscotch gets four stars is the pizza. I ordered the Brooklyn Pizza, which was advertised by the front door. It's mediocre with a cardboard crust. That being said, I would go back to try other menu items.

William M.

Yelp
Hopscotch Bar & Grill you are truly remarkable, I had an incredible experience here yesterday. This place is a vibe. Every thing I've tried up until now is awesome. Everyone was very welcoming. Definitely recommend Hopscotch Bar & Grill.

Jen S.

Yelp
Great food! Great Vibe! A solid neighborhood type bar. Upon my first visit the 2 owners made me feel like a Queen! Tommy and Matt are awesome! I highly recommend stopping in, grabbing a bite and having some drinks. We all had such a great time. I can't wait to go back!

Timothy B.

Yelp
To begin, this review is based on 1 single visit and 1 single item. Please do not take this as a review of the entire establishment OR the entire menu. This is my experience after 1 visit and 1 item, and it was a take out order at that. With that being said, if you like pizza and you really like good pizza, do not order a pizza from Hopscotch. They say they have Brooklyn style pizza. Now, I'm from Richmond, Va. but I have been to NY several times. I've had pizza in Brooklyn, Manhattan and several other places in NY. I've been to Chicago and had pizza there. When I travel to California I eat pizza. As a matter of fact no matter where I go I look for pizza (Hawaii, France, the Caribbean, Madagascar, S. Africa, etc). I eat meat pizza, veggie pizza, pizza with pineapple, pizza with eggs, pizza with sauce, white pizza, Neapolitan pizza, frozen pizza, pizza from a buffet, pizza from a food truck, pizza on the street and homemade pizza. I've even eaten pizza without cheese (gasp!). I've eaten oven baked, stone oven baked, wood fired pizza, pizza on the grill, pizza on stove top and cold pizza the day after. I've eaten thick crust, thin crust, flaky crust and a hearty crust. After all that pizza eating I can honestly say, pizza is not the strong point at Hopscotch. Bless their hearts, I'm sure they try and want to have a good pizza, it's just not. The pepperoni pizza I ordered, which is a basic pizza, was not good. The crust was doughy as if it hadn't been cooked fully. The cheese was rubbery and the pepperoni was obviously of poor quality. I will not order the pizza again and recommend you not order it either. Now with that being said, I will definitely be going back to Hopscotch to try other items and drinks. I also will try those items at the restaurant as opposed to take out. I honestly feel that my experience will be totally different, especially since many have said they enjoyed different items since Hopscotch took over. I'm actually looking forward to trying one of the watermelon crushes! Just not the pizza! ** PS, remember this is just a review of the pizza nothing else!**

Devin O.

Yelp
My all time favorite neighborhood spot. Staff treats you like family, drinks are consistently delicious, and the food is delectable. Highly recommend to any and all who are looking for a relaxing break from the usual high-paced DC bar.

Angie W.

Yelp
Hopscotch Bar and Grill has the potential to be a great place to meet with friends, have a cocktail, enjoy some comedy and maybe have food. My first impression after spending some time there is, do they wipe off the outside tables after use and does the staff wash their hands after their smoke breaks. And no diner should have to ask for a napkin. The quality of the food is low. Did you get the wings from the A&P,? They tasted old each time I had them. The grilled cheese did not offer enough cheese to cover the bread. Perhaps Restaurant Rescue could come in and give them some pointers.

K K.

Yelp
Come here for Brodie and stay for the OG chicken sandwich. Always a solid time. Happy hour is now three hours. Definitely go upstairs on Tuesday and Thursday. Gold chains required at the bar.

Sierra N.

Yelp
Love the environment & staff plus there's nothing on the menu I haven't liked!! Drinks are great too. It's just a neighborhood place filled with good people & they have comedy on some weeknights. Great deals too!

Yavar M.

Yelp
Cozy neighborhood restaurant with solid bar and Italian food. Easy place to take the kids with plenty of board games available. Cheaper cost than most restaurants in the area. Glad Tommy decided to open up shop in Bloomingdale!

Joe P.

Yelp
This place was fantastic! Value for money is excellent, especially compared to the other establishments nearby. Inviting space, great happy hour, community events, board games, and really friendly staff (thanks for your service and hospitality, Matt!). Awesome neighborhood spot, I'll be back!

Blondie B.

Yelp
First, they still have the OG chicken sandwich!! 5 stars just for keeping the OG alive. Prices are totally reasonable, just like Crisp and the food is very good. We also very much enjoyed the meatballs they served at the Taste of North Cap event. We will definitely be returning.

Alejandra S.

Yelp
I loved this place!! I'll definitely be coming back. I had the best veggie pasta and amaretto sours. I actually asked about the drinks and apparently, they make their own sours. Great drinks, awesome ambiance. Also, Tommy - the barkeep- is a colorful personality.

Elysse B.

Yelp
Owners and staff are really friendly! They have great drink deals, good board games, recently added pizza to their menu which was really decent, and just an overall nice place to hang out.

Justin H.

Yelp
Was looking a for a decent delivery burger and was not disappointed!! The burger was perfectly cooked and fries were well seasoned. Opted for an additional order of fried pickles -- lightly breaded yet awesomely crisp! Will definitely be ordering again soon!

Lauren C.

Yelp
This is our favorite neighborhood bar! Great drink selection and a really tasty menu. Highly recommend the fried pickles, chicken parm, caprese sliders, Mac and cheese, Brooklyn pizza and of course the OG chicken sandwich!

Michael E.

Yelp
Delicious! We wanted some pub quality fish and chips and were happy to see it on the eclectic menu. It was bartered perfectly! Food was ready extremely quickly and was handled for take out in a very safe way. Definitely impressed. The staff was friendly and actively engaging the neighborhood which was nice to see. Can't wait to come back here again to eat inside or out on the patio. What a great neighborhood find.

Nora G.

Yelp
This is one of the best spots in DC. The owners, employees, and customers are unique and incredible people. The food features classic American staples - I recommend the fried pickles and pizza (Tommy's is the best). If you are looking for genuinely great conversation, humor, and a neighborhood environment - this is the spot for you.

John C.

Yelp
This is a diamond in the ruff type of establishment. Family business run by top notch people who understand how to manage a neighborhood pub and restaurant. The food, particularly the pizza, is also very good.

Christina B.

Yelp
Happened upon Hopscotch tonight and what a delightful experience. We had a great conversation with the owner, Tommy. Some really good draft beers and the bruschetta. Having learned that Tommy was from New York and made his own crust for his pizzas, we took one home. Best pizza experience we've had in DC in years. Can't wait for the grand opening. A Truxton Circle/Bloomingdale neighbourhood gem.

Katie L.

Yelp
This was one of the most pleasant and chill bars places I have ever been to. BIG shouts to Andy the bar tender you were amazing. And then the cook who makes the banana pudding. 10/10 please do your self a favor and just stop by.
