A Kouignn Amann Superstar Is About to Open A Second Bakery | Eater SF

"Chef Kyle Itani doubles down on Epicurious Garden in Berkeley with this offshoot of his popular (now closed) Hopscotch, centered on fried and rotisserie chicken with two chicken sandwiches and sides like miso Caesar salad, kimchi fried rice, braised collard greens, and cheddar chive biscuits, joining his eponymous Itani Sushi." - Dianne de Guzman

Very disappointing. Fried chicken was black and was not hot. Extremely dry and lacked any seasoning. Potatoes were undercooked and tasted gross. Side of ranch was less than half full. This is one of the very few times that I can’t recommend the place. Krispy Krunchy chicken is way better for half the price. I actually had to go get good chicken the next day.

Breading fell off the soggy chicken with raw buttermilk dredge. Surprised that it was served cold /room temp. It felt as if it was baked and not fried. Buttermilk biscuits were dense but the flavor was good. Collared greens with miso was an acquired taste. Only highlight was the yuzu yoghurt. Would not revisit. Disappointing from its heydays in San Francisco.. hopefully the other resturant brands under the chef are better.

Two people. We ordered the half rotisserie chicken combo - beans and waffle fries. Very tasty! Chicken was juicy and well seasoned.

I went two days after they opened. I used to go to Hopscotch (sit down restaurant) when they opened and have fond memories of the chicken. This iteration is broached (pressure fried) and when I went the chicken came out of the fryer right as I ordered and was extremely hot and crispy. I had the beans and collards as side dishes and both were excellent. It's in a fancy food court, so in terms of atmosphere there isn't much, but I highly recommend heading out to the back garden to find a table!

I stumbled into this fried chicken spot between classes, and wow — best decision all week. The chicken is perfectly crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, total comfort food vibes. I grabbed rice and collard greens on the side, and both were packed with flavor (the greens have that slow-cooked, soulful taste). Plus, the cheddar chive biscuit? Unreal. Soft, buttery, with just the right hit of cheddar. The whole thing hit the spot without slowing me down for the rest of the day. Definitely my new go-to for a quick, satisfying meal.

I picked up lunch here before meeting my girlfriends at Indian Rock, and it was the perfect picnic spread. The fried chicken was still crisp and delicious even after the short drive, and it paired beautifully with the miso Caesar salad — fresh, tangy, and just a little different in the best way. The collard greens were tender and flavorful, and the cheddar chive biscuits practically disappeared the moment I opened the box. Everyone asked where the food was from because it was THAT good. A new favorite for our East Bay meetups!

My partner and I came here for a casual date night and sat outside on the patio — such a cozy, relaxed vibe. The star of the show, of course, was the fried chicken: golden, crunchy, and seasoned just right. We shared a spread of sides — rice, collard greens, a miso Caesar salad, and those heavenly cheddar chive biscuits (we ordered extras to take home). The food felt indulgent but elevated at the same time, and paired with the warm evening and good conversation, it made for one of our best nights out in Berkeley. Highly recommend for anyone looking for great food and a chill atmosphere.

Google
Glad to have come here and try out the Berkeely location after having gone to the old Oakland spot years ago. The chicken was great and whatever they use in the seasoning for the breading was fire. The biscuits were thicccc and delicious. Service was great too. Def will be back!

Yelp
After a night of booze, I woke up and was craving a fried chicken sandwich. I faintly remembered my partner mentioning Hopscotch so I decided to give this place a try and DoorDashed it. After looking at their menu online, I decided to order their bucket instead. Lmaooo their buttermilk fried chicken was on point and surprisingly when it arrived, it was still crispy and not soggy. It hit the spot and brought me back to life. The meat was juicy, hot, and packed with flavor. I also ordered a side of coleslaw so that I didn't feel too guilty eating just chicken. Hahaha it helped balanced everything out. Hopscotch is now a place I can order from when I'm craving fried chicken again. :-)

Yelp
My take out order on a weekday afternoon was fast and friendly. Chicken sandwich was amazing. The Caesar salad was overdressed therefore toppings except the cheese were diluted. Noodles in salad missing. Side order of Korean rice needs quality control-dry, under cooked, not recommended.

Yelp
I ordered the Buttermilk Fried Chicken Bucket from Hopscotch Chicken through DoorDash and it exceeded my expectations considering it held up after delivery. The crust was impressively crisp, and the interior stayed juicy and tender. I also tried the roasted potatoes and mini caesar salad which also turned out pretty good. I'm always weary of ordering certain foods from restaurants through DoorDash cause you just don't know if it will hold up well, but this fried chicken definitely did.

Yelp
Located in a food court on Shattuck. Workers were nice and transparent about the wait when I went (25 minutes). I got the 3 piece tender combo + an extra tender for $4. My total was $25. The combo comes with 3 tenders, a sauce, and side. Tenders tasted pretty good. They were easy to chew and had some flavor. Ranch was good and clearly house made. Waffle fries were ok, not that much flavor and not a lot of waffle fries at all for the price. I don't know if I'd come here often because of the price, but it's fried chicken in Northside of Berkeley.

Yelp
It is the best fried chicken. Crispy and moist. The biscuits were delicious too. Would come back for more.

Yelp
Omg the unagi donburi was amazing! I ate it before I could take a picture. We also ordered the rainbow roll and more sushi. Cucumbers - pickled and crunchy- slaw wonderful taste- eel fresh and not drowned in sauce . Roll were fresh and yummy! Definitely going back to try more.

Yelp
I had never gotten the chance to try their chicken when they were located on San Pablo. I got excited when I heard they had opened up in Berkeley as it is walking distance from me. I ordered a 5piece of the Chile Miso wings and a side order of the cheddar chive biscuits. Service was quick and the person who took my order was very nice and welcoming. The ordering station was very clean. The wings are reasonably priced for $9. I was lucky to get all flats which are my favorite. They were delicious. The only reason I can't give 5 stars is because the $6 biscuits were TINY compared to the photos they promote on their IG page. I will be returning though to try the other various forms of chicken but I probably won't get any sides next time.

Yelp
Great fried chicken! Fast and tasty. High recommended. And big portion with multiple sauces to select from

Manuel A.

Yelp
The chicken didn't have much flavor, and it was pretty dry in some pieces. Unfortunately, it was forgettable. Service via delivery. Ambiance not applicable.

Yelp
I recently went to hopscotch chicken and wow! I got the Chicken tenders, collard greens, Fresno aioli and I couldn't be happier I stopped in! I missed this place and glad they're back and better than ever! Everything was cooked perfectly and was so delicious! Def going to make this my go to chicken joint!

Kristen T.

Yelp
Came here because I was excited to have fried chicken come to the neighborhood. We ordered a fried chicken combo that comes with a side dish ( a lot of great side dishes to choose from) and a sauce. The cashier let know they make all sauces in house from scratch. We also got the fried chicken sandwich and a Miso Cesar salad, which I saved for lunch the next day. Everything was spectacular!!! The chicken was so crispy but very juicy on the inside. The chicken sandwhich had great flavor and was huge. I recommend getting the house made hot sauce for the chicken sandwich. We got the collard greens, roasted baby red potatoes and biscuits for pur side dish. I was pleasantly surprised by the house made honey butter that came with the biscuits. Everything was fresh, flavorful and excellent. We will be back! P.s. Im going to need that teriyaki sauce recipie!

Yelp
I ordered the 2-piece meal and requested 2 thighs. They said okay. But what I got wasn't 2 in-bone thighs. All their pieces (except for the wings) are chicken tenders. The pieces were slightly dry and had too much crust on it. I didn't care for the coleslaw. Too tangy. Too much dressings.

Yelp
Always loved Hopscotch. Great to have them in Berkeley. Taste fresh, tender, juicy. Their Sandwich and hot sauce is hella good! Hands down one of my go to for fried chicken!

Yelp
The most delicious crispy & juicy chicken. I'm glad this place opened up after the move from the oakland location. Service was great and the space is welcoming as a part of a larger food neighborhood.

Woojin P.

Yelp
This place's marketing as the providers of the "best chicken in Berkeley" is frankly super embarrassing. I ordered a 2 piece chicken set with a side of cole slaw and an additional side of fries. The fries were blonde, limp, and undersalted. There was 0 crisp to them, and I could barely choke down a few with a drink. The chicken was just sad. Not only was the dredge falling off the chicken, it was flavorless. There was no spice or salt in the dredge, making it taste like fried flour. They claim that they marinate their chicken in buttermilk for 3 days, but the chicken was bland and didn't taste brined at all. The saving grace (?) was the cole slaw, which was not disgusting and tasted like the bottled Asian soy ginger salad dressing you find in supermarkets. Service was also fine. I was extremely disappointed, mainly due to the high expectations I held for 3-day-marinated-then-pressure-fried chicken that is supposedly the best in Berkeley. This actually might have been the worst chicken I've had in California.

Yelp
We ordered online and picked up two fried chicken combos with sides. The portions were generous and the food was excellent! Highly recommend Hopscotch Chicken.

Yelp
This small place is new to me and I'm glad it's in my neighborhood. The ambiance is very casual , it is in a food court but the chicken is delicious.

Kamran M.

Yelp
Really fresh, crunchy and flavorful chicken. Delicious lemonade. Friendly service. Will try agIn.

Yelp
I ordered the whole rotisserie chicken with bbq and teriyaki sauce, kimchi fried rice and slaw sides. Service was great as they found me at a nearby smoothie restaurant ordering a smoothie and brought me my order. Food was very tasty and chicken was moist. Took home to eat so didn't utilize eat in food court so didn't take part in ambiance. I will be back to get my favorite fried chicken in the very near future.

Yelp
I wasn't that impressed, compared to the version of the buttermilk fried chicken they used to serve in their Hopscotch Restaurant in Oakland. Wait was long, at first they messed up my order (substituted chicken tenders for a chicken breast), and while the chicken was nice and juicy, the teryaki sauce was really mediocre, especially for an Asian-type fried chicken. I remember the sauce at the old Hopscotch was one of the highlights, so that was a real minus. Not that excited to go back until they get their act together better.
